St. Charles man wins big at World Series of Poker

By SEAN CHAFFIN editorial@kcchronicle.com For poker players, there is no bigger prize than winning a gold bracelet at the World Series of Poker.

The annual poker spectacle features 61 tournaments culminating with the No Limit Texas Hold’em World Championship, which is broadcast on ESPN. The 60 preliminary tournaments also offer a chance at poker glory and big money.

And in early June, St. Charles native Brent Wheeler beat a field of 645 players to win his first bracelet and $191,605. The win came in Limit Hold’em, a version of the game with fixed betting limits.

The win was a dream come true for the 27-year-old, who is no stranger to poker success. Wheeler staged two comebacks to win the title.

He began play at the final table seventh in chips, and – when playing heads-up – his opponent had a 2-to-1 chip advantage at one point.

“It was a big relief. Every break, I would walk over to my supporters and say, ‘I just want to win,’ ” he said.

“It wasn’t about the money, the difference between first and second wasn’t going to change my life. I just hate to lose, especially after coming so close.”

A win at the WSOP validates a professional poker player’s career, Wheeler said.

Several friends were in attendance at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Growing up, Wheeler said he had a great family with three brothers and two sisters. His parents have been married for more than 25 years, and they were all very close and always competitive. Wheeler competed in all sports, and also was driven at school and work.

“While I was quite lazy at school, I did what I had to do to stay at the top of the class GPA-wise to make sure I could get into a good school,” he said.

Brent Wheeler of St. Charles won his first World Series of Poker bracelet and $191,605 in early June. The win was a dream come true for the 27-year-old, who is no stranger to poker success.

“The WSOP is the busiest time of the year for me, and I don’t take it for granted. I play every day for 45 days straight, often 12-plus hours a day. ... My game evolved over millions of hands of online poker.

Online poker is much different than playing live, and it took a lot of poker talks with [a] friend to realize some of the adjustments I needed to make.”

Playing online poker since age 16, Wheeler raised and bluffed online and in home games.

By age 18, he was playing live tournaments in Minnesota’s Canterbury Park and at European Poker Tour stops.

College got put on the back burner.

“I rarely went to class.

I would grind online in my dorm during the day and then go out at night. My natural intelligence and strong short-term memory allowed me to cram for tests and still pull off good grades. I made

the dean’s list at least once,” he said. “I paid for college out of my pocket thanks to poker. So, after two years of getting good grades but learning nothing, I decided to drop out. I was making consistent good money online and was confident in the life plan I had as a poker player.”

As a poker player, he’s never looked back and has amassed more than $1 million in winnings. Wheeler has scored several six-figure cash prizes, but the WSOP victory was his biggest by far. Beyond that, he had finished in the money in three more events as of press time.

To what does he attribute his success?

“A lot of hard work and dedication. The WSOP is the busiest time of the year for me, and I don’t take it for granted. I play every day for 45 days straight, often 12-plus hours a day,” Wheeler said.

“I’ve also been fortunate to make a good friend in Vegas who has helped me with ‘patience’ in my game. My game evolved over millions of hands of online poker. Online poker is much different than playing live, and it took a lot of poker talks with this friend to realize some of the adjustments I needed to make.”

With his winnings, Wheeler plans to do some backpacking across Europe in August with his two younger brothers. The rest of the cash will go to savings.

Away from poker, he is also hoping to find himself on the small screen.

“One of my life goals is to get on the reality show ‘Survivor,’ ” he said. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and only recently have begun applying. Unfortunately, it’s nearly impossible to get noticed. I’m hoping if I win enough tournaments, someone will start paying attention.”

3 cited in Geneva alcohol compliance checks Establishments will get hearings

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Servers at three liquor establishments in Geneva were cited Friday when two underage custom-

ers were served beers, police said.

Cmdr. Eric Passarelli said the police used an underage man and woman, both age 19 and using their own identification, when it did liquor compliance checks during the weeklong Swedish Days Festival.

Police checked 16 establishments and beer gardens

between 7 and 8 p.m., he said.

The three whose servers were cited for serving beer to the pair were Fiora’s Restaurant, 317 S. Third St.; Sergio’s Mexican Cantina, 30 W. State St.; and EvenFlow Music and Spirits, 302 W. State St. The other 13 establishments turned the pair away.

The servers are charged separately from the liquor li-

cense holders, Passarelli said.

Information on the three liquor license violations was sent to Mayor Kevin Burns, who is the city’s liquor commissioner. They will get a formal complaint letter and notification of their hearings, which have not been set, Passarelli said.

Passarelli said Fiora’s and EvenFlow did not check for

identification at all. A bouncer checked at Sergio’s and allowed them in, but the server did not check again when they ordered beers and were served, he said.

The police do compliance checks every year during Swedish Days and inform all the liquor license holders that these will take place, Passarelli said.

8LOCAL BRIEFS No injuries reported in two-car crash in Geneva GENEVA – No one was injured in a two-vehicle crash that slowed traffic for about a half-hour Wednesday morning on Randall Road south of Keslinger Road in Geneva.

Geneva Police Cmdr. Eric Passarelli wrote in an email that a vehicle had stopped on Randall Road for construction and was struck from behind by a second vehicle.

“It was initially dispatched as an injury accident; however, there were no injuries,” he wrote in the email.

He said it took emergency crews about 30 minutes to clear the crash, and traffic was moving again shortly before noon.

Bluegrass fest will be at Dickson-Murst Farm MONTGOMERY – The Northern Illinois Bluegrass Association will move its Bluegrass Festival to The Dickson-Murst Farm in Montgomery from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 28.

The festival will feature workshops on the traditional instruments in bluegrass music, with open-mike performances by bands from across the state, plus jamming sessions throughout the grounds.

There also will be a vintage car show. Collectors in the area are invited to bring their autos for a day of talking cars and live entertainment. The Kendall Arts Guild will also display its pieces. Food will

be available at the Country Kitchen.

The Bluegrass Festival at the Farm is a free event. The Conservation Foundation, owner of the site and co-host of the event, notes that the event will be held rain or shine.

Dickson-Murst Farm is at 2550 Dickson Road on the west side of Montgomery. It is one mile east of Route 47, two miles west of Orchard Road, between Route 30 and Galena/Chicago Road.

Kiwanis seeks children’s charities in STC to help ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Noon Kiwanis Foundation Charities will accept applications for funding from organizations serving children.

The general criteria for funding consideration are that the organization will fund only specific programs and not general administrative expense; the program must benefit youth in the St. Charles ZIP codes 60174/5 and/or from within the boundaries of St. Charles School District 303; and the organization must operate without discrimination of any kind.

Traffic on eastbound Route 64 was closed because of a rollover crash at Powis Road in West Chicago on Wednesday. One man, the driver of the SUV that rolled over, was injured.

Driver hurt in rollover crash on Route 64 in West Chicago

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com WEST CHICAGO – An SUV was involved in a rollover wreck after being hit by a semitrailer shortly before noon Wednesday, sending the SUV driver to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, officials said.

The crash occurred just west of Powis Road on Route 64 in West Chicago, where the road is under construction.

West Chicago Deputy Fire Chief Dennis Keef said although emergency crews were prepared to do an extrication, it was not necessary.

“There was one person still inside. They pushed the but-

ton, the door opened and he came out,” Keef said. “As long as the roof is intact, the door will open.”

The driver, a man who was not identified, was taken to Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield.

West Chicago police officials did not respond to questions about the crash.

Paul Darrah Communications manager for county state’s attorney’s office said that the Children’s Center is comprised of investigators specially trained to deal with child abuse cases.

“With sexual abuse, physical abuse or even emotional abuse, when interviewing kids you have to be more sensitive,” he said. “The investigators try to avoid making the victims relive the abuse over and over in interviews, as well as picking up on cues the kids give.”

Wheaton Warrenville School District 200 representatives declined to comment on the sentencing, but the district said in a March 20 release that Klemm was sus-

pended without pay and that, while they understood that no additional former or current students were involved, counseling would be available.

“The district takes the safety and emotional well-being of our students very seriously.

All staff must complete rigorous criminal background checks before beginning employment,” the release said.

“We encourage parents to reach out to their school social workers, counselors and psychologists if they need assistance in talking to their children about these terrible, unfortunate allegations.”

Darrah said Klemm was originally charged with 11 counts, but negotiated a plea bargain to plead guilty to two.

Klemm will be eligible for parole after he has served 85 percent of his sentence and will be required to register as a sex offender for life.

“We’re thankful to the school for their assistance, the Wheaton Police Department and for the family for doing the right thing and bringing it to our attention,” Darrah said.

Church hosts exhibition of Palestinian art Friday

Fox Valley Academy to perform concert Sunday

WHEATON – A former Wheaton North teacher and speech team coach has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after the revelation that he had inappropriate sexual contact with a former student.

Edwin Klemm, 43, who has had a listed residence of St. Charles, entered a guilty plea for two counts of criminal sexual assault Thursday morning. According to a news release from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s office, Klemm assaulted the female victim on multiple occasions from February to November 2011, including at least once at his home while his daughter was at the residence.

The assaults were discovered when the parents of the former student found love letters from Klemm to his victim. The parents then contacted the DuPage County Children’s Center, which opened an investigation.

Back from the brink, thriving Fox River recovers from mid-20th century ‘nightmare,’ restored as recreational haven

R

ichard Anderson can’t tell you how many blue herons he has seen while plying the waters of the Fox River in his red-and-white paddlewheel tour boat.

But that doesn’t mean Anderson – second-generation owner of his family’s business, St. Charles Paddlewheel Riverboats – ever tires of the sight.

“I’ve been doing this a long time, piloting these boats,” Anderson said. “You’d never see a blue heron, or a lot of other big, beautiful things that feed on fish.

“But now we see them every trip. This river, it has changed quite a bit.”

The Fox River has stood at the center of life in the Tri-Cities of Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles throughout their history, as well as for the other communities lining the river’s shores.

Originally, the river offered a source of commerce, power, food and transportation for those who called Kane County home.

But the Fox River also has enhanced its residents’ quality of life in less tangible ways, offering both natural beauty and opportunities for fun as a regional playground.

“There are photos and accounts of people using the river for all sorts of fun, all year-round,” said Natalie Gacek, director of the St. Charles Heritage Center. “In the summer, you’d see people boating, fishing, swimming, you name it.

“And in the colder months, we have photos of people curling, ice skating and playing hockey on the river.”

While local residents used the river for fun and recreation throughout the 19th century, it was in the early years of the 20th century that

With the arrival of the inter-urban railroad lines, wealthy Chicago residents had easy access to the Fox River, offering a summertime escape from the suffocating heat and pollution that characterized the city.

“Just a short ride on the train, and you felt like you were in the country,” Gacek said. “For many of them, this probably felt like paradise.”

In response, cottages were built by the dozens, opening resorts up and down the Fox River, with much of the activity focused on the section from South Elgin and St. Charles.

Soon, resorts – often called

“camps” or “summer colonies” – with names such as Jones Woods, Oak Ridge Cottages and Rainbo Springs packed in hundreds of visitors each summer to play on sandy beaches, paddle a canoe, fish or picnic along the river’s banks.

In the 1930s, the camps also drew in live entertainment, as big jazz bands, including the Guy Lombardo and Wayne

King bands, brought their sounds to dance pavilions at the camps.

Tough times The onset of the Great Depression and World War II, however, forced many resorts to close. Those that remained after the war found it difficult to survive, as musical tastes shifted and Chicagoans

eff Hamby has fished the Fox River near its worst.

Now, Hamby, owner of SS Minnows bait shop in South Elgin, believes he and other anglers on the river may be fishing the waterway near the best it’s been in as long as anyone can remember.

“It used to be just mainly carp and channel catfish,” Hamby said. “But now people are catching smallmouth bass, walleye, muskies, northern pike, you name it.

“There sure seems to be a lot more game fish in here, and that’s a really great thing to see.”

Earlier this spring, Hamby, 49, opened his bait shop on Route 31 in South Elgin.

He believes he has timed well his newest business venture, offering bait and tackle, including handmade jigs and the lures, to those willing to try their hand at angling in the river.

“There was no bait shop here in town, down by the river,” Hamby said. “So, I

Hamby, however, remembers a time when the river was not a recreational draw, particularly for sport fishermen.

During the middle years of the 20th century, industrial pollution devastated the river as a fishery.

After the passage of the Clean Water Act in 1972, that pollution was curtailed and in the years since the quality of the river’s water has steadily improved.

A renewed public interest in maintaining the Fox has enhanced the quality of the

river’s ecology, said Brook McDonald, president and CEO of the Naperville-based Conservation Foundation, a group that has taken a prominent role in the preservation of the river.

“We let the animals living in the river tell us how healthy it is,” McDonald said. “And what we’re seeing is the habitat in the river, it’s getting better.”

Steve Pescitelli, streams biologist for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources office near Yorkville, said the populations of “sport fish” have increased and continue to strengthen.

He noted that in 2011, a survey discovered larger numbers of smallmouth bass from Algonquin to Yorkville, as well as improving numbers of flathead catfish and walleye.

“We’re seeing all sizes of fish, which is what we like to see,” Pescitelli said. “It’s the sign of healthy populations.”

for a few decades just past the middle of the 20th century, which Phyfer called the river’s “real nightmare.”

By the 1960s, the river had become a natural roadblock to avoid, rather than a resource to enjoy, Phyfer said.

“Nobody went down there,” Phyfer said. “It didn’t look good or smell good, and you certainly didn’t want to go in it.”

Anderson, 64, grew up working on the river with his father, Chet, who founded the St. Charles Paddlewheel Boat tour concession in the late 1940s.

He echoed Phyfer’s account.

“Nobody wanted to live by the river for a really long time,” Anderson said.

By the early 1970s, articles about the river marveled at the tales of older Tri-Cities residents of a river once clean enough to play in, let alone eat anything, such as shellfish, that came out of it.

developed a taste for more exotic and far-flung vacation destinations.

Eventually, some of the clusters of cottages became neighborhoods of permanent residents, Gacek said, while other resort land, such as the land now occupied by Pottawatomie Park, came under public ownership.

Canoeing or picnicking at the parks became popular pastimes for area residents.

But in subsequent years, the river fell out of favor as a recreational destination for many – and that decline can be traced to pollution.

“It wasn’t at the forefront of people’s minds to maintain the river as a clean waterway,” Gacek said. “It really did damage to the river, and it really did stall any further expansion of recreation activities around it.”

While other historical uses of the river faded into the past, industry remained a vital cog of the local economy. And many of those industries, with their mills, factories and quarries, streamed waste into the channel, sickening the waters.

Dave Phyfer, a videographer who produces historical videos for the Geneva History Center, is creating a short film on the history of the Fox River in Geneva.

He said throughout most of the region’s history, locals and visitors alike enjoyed similar recreational activities – except

Aurora man arrested in North Aurora theft KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com NORTH AURORA – An Aurora man has been charged with felony theft after being accused of stealing jewelry worth more than $3,000 from a North Aurora victim’s home

while doing pest control service.

Troy T. Placek, 37, of the 700 block of Roberts St., Aurora, has been charged with theft of more than $300, a Class 3 felony. Placek was arrested Monday and brought to the Kane County Jail. He post-

ed $2,000 bail and was released pending trial, according to a release from the North Aurora Police Department.

The incident occurred March 30 in the 1400 block of Oakland Circle, according to the release. The victim noticed that her gold engage-

ment ring with a one-carat diamond was missing, and she suspected a pest control employee who was in her house recently, the release stated.

North Aurora police detectives searched a pawn database through LeadsOnline, an online investigation system,

and found that the suspect had recently pawned a similar ring at a pawnshop, according to the release.

Detectives recovered the stolen ring from the pawnshop April 15 and got an arrest warrant for Placek on May 3.

Tool Inc. in Hebron.

Alice taught herself how to paint and loved to spend time in her art studio at the tool shop. She learned to paint landscapes and used acrylic paints. She also loved to garden and watch her son tend to his beehives.

Alice is survived by her son, William (Jody) Snyder of Hebron; two grandsons, Robert John Snyder and Daniel M. Singleton; a brother, Eugene E. (Judy) Georgi; and a sister, Olive Flint.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on June 27, 1990; and her son, Robert G. Snyder, in 2000.

The action came after a 90-minute closed session for a dismissal hearing.

According to board meeting records, the school board reconvened in open session at 9:26 p.m. and voted unanimously to support a recommendation to dismiss the employee because of performance concerns.

Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Craig Collins said he would not disclose who was fired as it was a personnel matter.

“It is not our practice to

identify individuals the board takes action against,” Collins said. “I’m not saying it does not happen in other districts.

We do not disclose the names of individuals who are dismissed.”

The Open Meetings Act requires that, “Final action shall be preceded by a public recital of the nature of the matter being considered and other information that will inform the public of the business being conducted.”

The Kane County Chronicle filed a request for review from Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s Public Access Counselor Sarah Pratt.

Pratt said she believes the district has to state which public employee is being recommended for dismissal.

“The purpose of the act is openness,” Pratt said. “I would think the name needs to be stated.”

Esther Seitz, an attorney who represents Illinois media on open meetings and public records issues, said the board should have stated the employee’s name when it voted and should have provided the name when requested.

“There is no general ‘personnel exemption,’ ” Seitz said.

A public body is allowed to withhold matters in a disciplinary case, but that is limited to the adjudicatory or investigative phase, she said.

Once disciplinary action is to occur, it is public.

“Once there is a final outcome when discipline is imposed, it has to be made public,” Seitz said.

If the school board were to vote to recommend a dismissal, Scaffidi said, the person’s name would also be included in the final action.

Injured dog improves; rescue group steps up to give aid

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A local animal rescue organization, Homes for Endangered and Lost Pets, said it will take responsibility for the dog injured by a car in Geneva late Sunday.

The dog, a 42-pound boxer mix, is recovering from his injuries at the St. Charles Veterinary Clinic, practice manager Marty Strauss said.

Geneva police took the dog to the St. Charles emergency vet clinic, which is housed in the same building, she said, and then he was transferred to the clinic for further treatment.

“We have donated our time and services and are going to continue to care for the dog at our clinic, and he’ll be going to a foster home when he is ready,” Strauss said. “He is able to walk and urinates on his own. He is so cute, but he’s scared and hurt – but doing so much better.”

The dog had a catheter because he was in so much pain he could not get up to urinate.

But since that has been removed the plastic collar was also taken off because there is no risk of him pulling the catheter out, Strauss said.

Board nears OK of $1.18M for nonprofits Some grants will develop local food pantries, assist other groups

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – More than $1.18 million in grants from the county’s riverboat fund soon could be on its way to more than 40 local community service organizations after a Kane County Board committee gave it a nod.

Wednesday, the Kane County Board Finance Committee unanimously recommended the full County Board approve the funding requests to be paid out of money received by the county from Elgin’s Grand Victoria Casino.

The annual grants, which range from $5,000 to $98,000, will be used to help fund a number of projects run by the various organizations.

Some grants, for instance,

would be used to develop local food pantries, improve Fox River water quality, repair homeless shelters, create a visitors center in downtown Geneva, expand an arts studio in Batavia, expand and improve technology at a cancer resource center in Geneva and help a local Salvation Army post buy new vehicles to transport food.

All grants were selected for funding by the County Board’s Riverboat Committee after an examination of written requests submitted by the organizations.

The money to be awarded comes from funds the county collects from the Grand Victoria under the terms of a longstanding agreement.

The County Board also approved spending $3.57 million of this year’s collections from

the Grand Victoria on various programs run by the county government.

The amount received annually by the county is tied to the Grand Victoria’s revenue. That amount has fallen through the years from as much as $12 million more than a decade ago to $4.4 million this year.

To maintain funding levels for external grants around $1 million, as they had been in years past, the County Board would need to dip into about $10 million in the riverboat fund that had accumulated through the years.

The Finance Committee only briefly discussed the external grants before recommending approval. The measure could go to the full County Board during its meeting in July.

“Somebody owned this dog because he is neutered,” Strauss said. “He could have traveled a long way. He is thin, and he may have been running for a long time. Maybe he had a collar, but it fell off. And there is no microchip.”

Strauss recommended pet owners get their dogs and cats microchipped as a good way to be reunited with them if they get lost. She praised H.E.L.P. for coming forward to take care of Holden.

“They are such a great organization,” Strauss said.

“They try to save every animal they can.”

By ASHLEY RHODEBECK arhodebeck@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A man who was beaten as he worked as a bouncer in downtown St. Charles is seeking compensatory damages in excess of $50,000 from his attackers, according to a lawsuit filed last week.

Brett Willing was working as a security officer at the Filling Station, 300 W. Main St., St. Charles, on Nov. 29, 2011, when he came into contact with Peter L. Currie and Jason T. Nord, both 35.

According to the lawsuit, Currie and Nord bought alcoholic beverages at 10:30 p.m., and Currie vomited into the glass drink he was served.

When they were asked

to leave because they had drank too much, the St. Charles residents became loud and obnoxious, according to the lawsuit. Further, the document reported, they verbally insulted Willing and approached him in a threatening manner as they were leaving.

Nord then “violently accosted” Willing, at which time both men fell to the ground, and Currie began to hit and kick Willing, according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit charges that Nord and Currie “repeatedly and violently kicked the plaintiff about the head, face and body with the intent to do great bodily harm even though the plaintiff was in a semiconscious state on the ground and unable to defend

Currie and Nord faced criminal charges from the incident, and in May 2012 each of them pleaded guilty to battering Willing, according to the lawsuit.

Now, however, Willing is seeking compensatory damages of more than $50,000, according to his lawsuit. It states he incurred large expenses for medical care and was disabled and unable to attend to his normal affairs for an extended period of time.

The lawsuit does not indicate whether he still works as a bouncer.

Willing’s lawyer didn’t return a call seeking comment.

Court records did not list legal counsel for Currie and Nord.

ST. CHARLES – The former VFW building in downtown St. Charles is about to be no more.

The city of St. Charles, which took ownership of 119 N. Third St. on June 19, plans to demolish the former one-story home of Memorial Post No. 5036 in mid-July.

The St. Charles Government Services Committee this week unanimously recommended approval of a $74,750 contract with Elgin-based American Demolition Corp. for the demolition.

Built in 1952 and expanded in 1986, the former VFW building is 5,600 square feet and is adjacent to a parking

lot with 40 spaces.

The city plans to build a public parking lot in its place to better serve the surrounding businesses. Construction is expected to begin next month and should be completed by Oct. 1.

According to the concept plan, the new parking lot will have 78 parking spots and four handicapped spots.

About 6,600 square feet of green space is planned.

Together, the demolition costs and parking lot construction expenses were estimated at $200,000. The city is funding those costs and the $800,000 purchase price with money not needed for other capital projects, including Red Gate Bridge, according to the city.

As part of its 20th anniversary celebration, the casino will donate $5,000 to Mooseheart Child City and School, a community and school for children and teens in need, located between Batavia and North Aurora.

The donation is part of a car giveaway.

“One of our core values is being a dedicated partner in the community,” said Himbert Sinopoli, Hollywood Casino’s president and general manager. “We want our communities to grow. We want them to be healthy.”

Committee outlines liquor commission

By ASHLEY RHODEBECK arhodebeck@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles is one step closer to having a liquor commission, not just a liquor commissioner.

In committee this week, aldermen approved a new ordinance that outlines the purpose, membership, powers and duties of the commission.

Police Chief Jim Lamkin presented the ordinance, noting it contains many details aldermen discussed in May as part of an ongoing discussion about the city’s liquor license code. Aldermen have been scrutinizing liquor license issues since former Mayor Don DeWitte proposed an earlier closing time last year due to problems connected to overserving.

The proposed ordinance – it still needs City Council approval – calls for a five-member liquor commission that will act in an advisory and hearing capacity.

As mayor, Ray Rogina will serve as liquor commissioner. He would appoint the other four members – two aldermen and two city residents.

Rogina said Wednesday he knows which aldermen he would appoint but declined to provide names.

As for the other commissioners, he said he would likely consider residents who have shown interest in serv-

Members should not own or work at any licensed establishment, nor should their spouse, parents, siblings or children.

The commission would meet as called by the liquor commissioner. At the commissioner’s request, it would review applications and background investigations and submit findings and recommendations to the commissioner.

It would also submit findings and recommendations to the commissioner about disciplinary hearings.

Lamkin noted that other amendments to the liquor code, such as changes to the 2 a.m. licenses, will be discussed later. Aldermen have talked about reviewing such licenses annually.

and visible to people in a way it wasn’t before,” Hoscheit said. “There were some areas of the river you just never saw, unless you were out on a boat. With the trail system, it opened all of that up.”

“Before the trail, the river was just something you crossed on a bridge, on the way to where you were going,” he said. “Now people could get down there and enjoy it.

“It renewed people’s connection to the river.”

And as the health of the river rebounded, recreation also increased. The river has in

recent years become a haven for outdoorsmen, birdwatchers and boaters.

Paddlers, for instance, established a river trail, complete with signage, for kayakers and canoeists to traverse its length by water.

Mark Miller, director of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, said the Fox River stands as an Illinois success story.

“The Fox River is a tremendous resource for fishing, paddling and other pursuits,” Miller said. “It’s a tremendous asset that should really be enjoyed by all.”

Who will pension joke be on?

A conference committee is a rarely used tool, and has a goal of reaching consensus when the House and Senate reach an impasse. The committee will be made up of 10 members – Cullerton and Madigan each will get three appointees, and House Republican Leader Tom Cross and Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno each will get two.

History isn’t on their side – previous committees trying to fix pensions have accomplished little.

Rod Blagojevich created the Governor’s 2004 Pension Commission, which met six times in April and May that year.

The Governor’s Pension Reform Program held multiple hearings from June to October 2009 and issued a

229-page report in November 2009, which noted that since 1997, at least 17 major pieces of legislation were approved relating to pensions; those included issuing pension obligation bonds.

Quinn created a working group in January 2012 that was to issue a report by that April that would recommend how to fix pensions.

Yet here we are, committees over and reports issued, and the unfunded liability continues to grow at a rate of $17 million a day.

We hope, for taxpayers’ sake, that this conference committee does what decades of other lawmakers have been unable to do.

But it’s hard to have faith – we’re supposed to believe the lawmakers that got us into this mess are going to solve it in a month?

We don’t want the joke to be on us.

Visiting the Big Apple reinforces love of Geneva For my recent high school graduation, my parents gave me a weekend in New York City. I had never been to New York before, and I was excited to see Times Square, Broadway and the United Nations.

Although New York is full of sightseeing opportunities, I didn’t spend most of my time looking around at the Big Apple. My mother and I shopped ‘til we dropped, and I loved it.

Now, going shopping in New York is different than shopping at Geneva Commons. The Commons is a tightly-packed mall of retail, with the farthest walk being from Barnes and Noble to DSW. In New York, the shops were not all right next to each

Opportunities for fashion appeared to us everywhere, like when we were walking to a theater to buy tickets and decided to look around at a shoe store on the way. That shoe store had a massive sale going on, and we bought three pairs of shoes.

Although I really did enjoy the sights, the shopping and the wonderful people-watching opportunities, I have to

say that I could never, ever live in a big city. I grew up on a two-acre lot, full of trees and ample room for playing. Living in an apartment, or even a walk-up, with no yard and no greenery in sight would be impossible. My mom and I did stop at both Bryant Park and Central Park, but those seemed remarkably artificial to me. Besides, you could still see the skyscrapers and hear the honking cabs. I have nothing against city dwellers or anyone who dreams of living in a big city; it’s just that I prefer places with ample trees and flowers and the occasional cornfield. Places like good old Geneva.

my weekend in New York was when my mother and I stumbled into a farmers market in SoHo. There were people selling fresh fruit smoothies, Turkish rugs, old vinyl and everything in between. It was considerably cheaper than any department store and with a much friendlier atmosphere. I almost would have felt at home if it weren’t for the trees planted in enormous flower pots rather than in the ground.

I really did enjoy my trip to New York, and I know I’ll enjoy my new zebra-striped pumps and all my tank tops from the farmers market.

However, like all trips to anywhere, it really reinforced

my love and confidence in the Chicago-area suburbs.

Wherever I end up someday, I know it’ll be on a two-acre lot, equidistant from cornfields and quite a few Starbucks.

Personally, I wouldn’t mind living in Geneva all my life.

It’s been a good place to live for the past 17 years, and it will always be better than any big city.

Has there ever been a better symbol of the asinine attitude state legislators take toward pension reform than the cartoonish Squeezy the Python?

Cartoons, like that snake, usually are jokes. And when it comes to fixing state pension systems, so are Illinois lawmakers.

They proved that yet again last week when the House and Senate held special sessions June 19, reputedly to try to reach a deal on pension reform. Gov. Pat Quinn called for the special session after lawmakers adjourned May 31 without approving a plan to address the nearly $100 billion unfunded pension liability.

Instead, lawmakers created a 10-member conference committee to attempt to develop a pension fix that reconciles deep differences between warring reform bills – one championed by Senate

Acquaviva brings award-winning wines to St. Charles tasting room

By KARA SILVA ksilva@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Acquaviva Winery’s tradition may be rooted in Bari, Italy, but the family-owned establishment has been making a splash in Illinois viticulture since its inception in Maple Park three years ago.

Offering award-winning varietals in the “European style,” a variant from other sweeter Illinois wines, Acquaviva owner Vito Brandonisio decided to expand his vino ventures and make Acquaviva’s wine more accessible by opening a wine-tasting room and deli in the Tri-Cities.

Brandonisio opened the Acquaviva Tasting and Wine Bar on May 16 in downtown St. Charles.

“We’re bringing our wines to St. Charles for convenience for people living in the Tri-Cities,” Brandonisio said, adding that brand recognition and awareness “for people who didn’t realize a winery [and vineyard] existed nearby” also played a role in the decision to expand.

The wine served at the tasting room comes from locally-grown grapes at Acquaviva’s 40-acre vineyard in Maple Park.

“We make all our own wines,” said Acquaviva’s day-manager Denise Cimm. “Our wines are on the dry side and in that way we are unique.”

With six children and 16 grandchildren residing in Kane County, Brandonisio understands the value of family and cares for his wines in a similar fashion. But don’t ask him which one is his favorite – wine that is.

“Just like you love all your children equally, I love all my wine equally,” he said, sipping a glass of the 2009 Piacere – a dry medium-bodied red blend with flavors of vanilla, cocoa, mocha,

black berries and caramel.

The tasting room’s rounded wood ceiling with a pair of protruding spouts – built to resemble an oak barrel – is suspended by wine-bottle-laden columns and stone walls, so customers can sip various vintages in an atmosphere resembling a wine cellar. “[The Acquaviva Tasting and Wine Bar] is a unique place where we made a barrel room and deli to pair wines with cheeses,” he said. “We have the reputation of the Maple Park location, but we offer small plates and samples.”

The new tasting room offers nine of Acquaviva’s red and white wines to taste at $6 for six pours and serves wine by the bottle or glass ($7 to $9). Cheese and delicatessen meat sampler platters – such as the Tavolata di Salumi e Formaggi (serves two to four) with Capocollo, Mortadella, Salami and ham, served alongside Parmigiano, Provolone and Asiago – as well as Italian and American sub sandwiches are served, according to Cimm.

The tasting room is also fit with an outdoor patio, where barbecues take place all day every Saturday.

Eric Schelkopf: I know you guys reunited in 2010. What’s it like being back with Fred Turner?

Randy Bachman: It’s just the old getting on a bike thing.

It’s just totally amazing. You never forget how to ride that bike.

I had the band going, and all Fred had to do was say “yes,” and walk in. He walked into rehearsal, picked up a bass, went to the microphone

ES: Of course, you’ve had many hits, both with The Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Every time you write a hit, is it harder to write the next hit?

RB: Yeah, it is. I’ll go in and

We looked at each other and smiled and laughed, and it was all right there. It was very natural. I’ve known him since we were teenagers.

ES: You and Fred released an album in 2010. Are you going to be doing any songs from that?

RB: Yeah, we do a couple.

Fred does two or three, and

I’ll say, I’ve written the new “Takin’ Care of Business,” and I’ll play it, and they will say, “That’s not the new ‘Takin’ Care of Business.’ ” It’s like being a gunfighter. You have this reputation, that you shot Billy The Kid or something, or you wrote this hit, and no matter who you shoot after that, it’s not as good as shooting Billy The Kid. It’s like the band Queen writing “We Will Rock You.” You can’t live down that song, and you don’t want to.

Every time you play it, it’s a celebration. People go nuts over this crazy little idea you had as a kid, that maybe that it could be a song. And suddenly it’s a song, and a record, and then it’s a hit and then it’s an anthem, and then

it stays forever.

ES: Take a song such as The Guess Who’s “American Woman” or Bachman-Turner Overdrive’s “Takin’ Care of Business.” What do you think it was about those songs that connected with people?

RB: Oh, I don’t know. Because if I knew, I would have had two more dozen of them.

It’s a momentum and it’s people’s awareness. You write the right song at the right time, somebody plays it on the radio, and then it’s in the stores and people buy it.

It’s just a magical alignment of so many things, that nobody can really make happen. It only happens once in a while. And I feel very fortunate that it happened with me twice in two different bands.

All it was was hard work, perseverance, practicing and being ready for the break when it came.

ES: The music business has changed a lot since you first started. Did you feel you had to make it in the United States before you guys could say you truly made it?

RB: The United States is

the big market. That’s where you sell the tens of millions of albums.

ES: There’s been a lot of Canadian bands recently that have achieved success.

RB: Well, Canada is the new breeding ground, at least in the last 10 years. Shania Twain, Celine Dion, Carly Rae Jepsen, Drake, the list goes on and on.

Because Canada is so big and because all the cities are so far apart, if you’re from another city, you have a totally different identity than a band, like, from Toronto.

Bands like Cowboy Junkies or Rush are from their own little area, and they all create their own kind of music.

ES: And of course, you’re a lot healthier these days. You had gastric bypass surgery in 2002, I understand.

RB: That saved my life. I was way over 350 pounds. I lost 150 pounds.

ES: Do you feel a lot better on stage?

RB: Oh, yeah, literally.

When you lose 150 pounds, you lose a person.

BATAVIA – The Batavia Park District’s River Rhapsody Concert Series continues at the Batavia Riverwalk in downtown Batavia.

The concerts take place at 7 p.m. Wednesdays through Aug. 7 at the Riverwalk, at Houston Street and Island Avenue.

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – St. Charles North is liable to tune up its huddle-breaking chant before the boys basketball season opens in November.

For now, the North Stars go with “Team!” largely because it suits them.

For a program that graduated much of its core, the selfless stuff of intangibles sure sprouted in the North Stars during an 11-1 run through the Geneva Summer League, including a berth in the semifinals of Wednesday’s session-ending tournament.

“Sometimes, that’s a hurdle you don’t clear until midseason, or not at all with some teams,” North coach Tom Poulin said. “This group is already playing as a team. They just want to win. They don’t care who scores and who’s out there. When they get out there and get their minutes,

they play hard. They’re fun to coach.”

Although he began with reserved tones fit for a stinging conference loss, Poulin eventually conceded as much about his team’s league finale, a 50-48 overtime loss to host Geneva in a semifinal.

The eventual runner-up Vikings almost squeezed through a tight game against champion Larkin in the final, losing, 54-51. Larkin’s quickness and ability to open up its perimeter shooters made the difference.

“We need to find out a way to lessen their wide-open 3s or just face them out,” Geneva junior forward Nate Navigato said. “They’re kind of quick.

We’ve got to figure out a way to stop them.”

The Vikings will get their chance in Upstate Eight Conference River Division play in another few months.

Much of the drama resided in Geneva’s Mack Olson Gym, including the final, which saw

Larkin cap the league season at 13-0. In the Geneva-North semi, the Vikings’ Chris Parrilli hit a layup in the closing seconds of overtime for the final margin.

That came after North slowed the pace and relied on defense and free-throws – three from Erik Miller and a pair from Jake Ludwig – to force an extra session in the final two minutes. The Vikings appreciated the chance to play in close games and anticipate more when the score isn’t beholden to a running clock.

“All the teams are always tight. It’s always so fun because they’re always so competitive,” Navigato said. “It’s always good games and down to the wire. Whoever works harder is the team that usually comes out on top.”

For many among the 20team field, the tournament brought a conclusion to a summer season in which “casual” was often a buzzword. Fans and coaches’ cries of “Three

seconds!” or “That’s a foul!” notwithstanding.

It started with the dress code: • Coaches were clad in polos or T-shirts and shorts instead of suits to combat the comfortably hazy contest and Mack Olson gyms.

• Players on the same team sported different-colored pennies or jerseys. If you didn’t know North wore black and blue, it was clear when it played as the visiting team Wednesday.

Ultimately, these two fashion statements helped reflect coaches’ penchants for generous substitutions and a free-flowing allotment of summer minutes. No, this league didn’t double as a week of November tryouts, but it did provide valuable data on which combinations might look most comfortable in which sets come the winter.

The IHSA recently released its 2013 regular season football schedule, and the biggest Tri-Cities rivalries again will be contested in Week 3.

Once Week 9 staples, the St. Charles East-St. Charles North and Batavia-Geneva games have moved around since Batavia and Geneva joined the Upstate Eight Conference before the 2010 season.

BY IAN MATTHEWS editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Beloit’s 5-4 win against the Cougars on Wednesday afternoon provided a blueprint for Kane County’s struggles to start the second half of the season.

The Cougars have loads of talent and often field a lineup that appears to be better than its opponent, but Kane County lately has been kept out of the win column for a variety of reasons.

In Wednesday’s loss, the Cougars out-hit Beloit, 12-5, but Kane County pitchers also handed out seven walks and hit three batters. Beloit sent nine men to the plate in the third, scoring three runs with the help of three walks, three wild pitches and a passed ball to take a 4-2 lead they would not relinquish.

Kane County scored twice in the eighth but would get no closer as the Snappers (48-28 overall, 5-1 second half) retired the heart of the Cougars’ order in the bottom of the ninth.

The loss is the sixth straight to start the second half for the Cougars (30-42, 0-6), who find themselves in last place in the Midwest League Western Division.

“I feel like we’ve been real close all year and we’re trying to get over the hump,” Cougars designated hitter Dan Vogelbach said. “We’re trying to come together as a team and keep pushing. The best teams go through stretches like this. I think if we can get out of this pretty soon, we’re going to shock a lot of people.”

The three-run inning was sandwiched between an otherwise clean game for Kane County pitchers, who limited the Snappers to five hits – only one for extra bases.

Justin Amlung came on in relief of Rosario and escaped a bases-loaded jam by striking out Beloit cleanup hitter Renato Nunez. Amling was nearly perfect over the next 31/3 innings, allowing only one run while striking out six.

During the Cougars’ sixgame skid, losses have usually come down to one fateful inning.

“Pitching wise, we just let guys on base. Those free passes come back to get you,” manager Mark Johnson said.

“Every leadoff walk we gave them scored. It seems like every play we don’t make costs us a run.”

Already familiar with Quad Cities – which rolled over the Cougars to win the first four games of the season – catcher Willson Contreras and his Kane County teammates will renew acquaintances with the River Bandits in a five-game series next week.

“It just depends on what’s happening, you know,” Almora said. “How the outcome of the game is going.”

Spelius said the five-game series was in its “embryo stage” in the MWL after he and a panel of general managers elected to integrate a few this season. He can’t recall a wealth of five-gamers in his 27 seasons heading the league, but they’ve happened.

Spelius noted that “there’s never the perfect schedule” as the MWL and its brethren comply with off-day and other quotas set by the MLB commissioner’s office and the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues.

This week in the big leagues, there were two-game interleague series played between travel days Monday and today.

Five-game series are nothing new for many Cougars, who found them to

be the norm last season in the Short-A Northwest League. That made slightly more logistical sense in a geographically generous, eight-team league whose northernmost and southernmost clubs play in Vancouver, Canada, and Boise, Idaho, respectively.

While Spelius can appreciate players’ pining for the natural change of scenery a three-game series brings, he also reminds folks to remember the boys in blue as the schedule takes an early July turn.

“When it’s a bus with a club, players can just sit there and sleep,” Spelius said. “When it’s drivers, they can’t when they’re umpires.”

GENEVA – One scouting report on minor league baseball fans contends they couldn’t tell you which teams were playing if you asked them.

Make sure the vendors are visible and the person operating the PA system occasionally makes them want to shout, and everything will be fine.

There’s no doubt some among the casual set have occupied a Fifth Third Bank Ballpark seat this season. Even as the Cougars trumpet their affiliation with the Cubs, it’s likely that sort of spectator will continue to show.

Should he or she happen to attend a pair of games over the upcoming Fourth of July weekend, however, the opponent had better be on their lips. In a bid to balance the schedule, Quad Cities comes to town from July 4 through 8 in a rare five-game series. That’s as long as the League Championship Series and comes on the heels of the Cougars’ five-game trip to Wisconsin.

“Sometimes, we just try something,” MWL president George Spelius said. “Nothing to fool anybody or anything like that.”

Poll the Cougars’ clubhouse on the quirk and the consensus is there’ll be little secrecy, indeed.

“You make sure you see every starter and you see relievers more than once, so you can see hitters’ tendencies, kind of what and how to throw them,” left-hander Sheldon McDonald said.

“The guys know each other a little bit better on each team,” added manager Mark Johnson, “so you’ve got to execute your at-bats and your pitches a little bit better and have a better game plan going against these guys.”

Recognition oftens comes sooner than the end of a series – three games, four games or otherwise – especially against fellow Western Division clubs.

The Cougars visited Quad Cities for four games last week to open the second half of the season. Center fielder Albert Almora had an idea of how the River Bandits’ staff was going to work him after Game 2.

That went double for St. Charles East, which has navigated an injury-plagued summer that’s kept key players out for extended stretches.

“I’m actually really happy the way we played in there considering the top six guys were out,” Saints coach Pat Woods said. “And overall, I think these young guys are benefiting from the older guys being out because they get a lot of playing time and experience.

Bottom line: Emery provided the perfect complement to Crawford in the regular season as he posted a 17-1-0 record with a 1.94 goals-against average and a .922 save percentage. He has earned the right to more money and more starts beyond Crawford’s shadow.

If Emery leaves, as expected, the Hawks could replace him with Antti Raanta, a highly touted 24-year-old from Finland who signed a oneyear deal with the team on June 3. Raanta posted a 21-1011 record with a .945 save percentage in Finland last season and could spell Crawford for double-digit starts next season if all goes well.

Next week, Bowman and his front-office team will have to get back to work.

Sorry, Charlie (by Charlie, we mean Stan). You can take a couple of weeks off later in the summer to bask in the glow of Lord Stanley’s Cup, but not right now. The NHL free-agent signing period starts July 5 – that’s only one week from Friday – and the Hawks will have some tough decisions to make regarding their roster for next season.

The good news is that the Hawks have all of their stars under contract for next season, from dynamic duo Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane (both signed through 2014-15) to Patrick Sharp (signed through 2016-17) to Marian Hossa (signed through 202021).

The bad news is that several key contributors will be unrestricted free agents, including playoff sensation Bryan Bickell, speedster Viktor Stalberg and steady backup Ray Emery.

If nothing else, the vocal talent showcased in “20 Feet From Stardom,” a documentary about back-up singers, affords the viewer/listener with a 90-minute Auto-Tune-free zone. For fans of the musical instrument that is the unaltered human voice, it’s a rare treat.

But it’s not just that. The film is also an engaging look at the nexus of art and commerce, talent and hard work. It’s a story of standing out and blending in, sometimes at the same time.

Several musical superstars are interviewed throughout the film, by Morgan Neville, a producer and director of music documentaries. Still, Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Stevie Wonder and others do more talking here than performing.

Oddly, Bette Midler is practically the only woman of their stature to be interviewed by the director, which may say more about the music industry’s sexism than Neville’s.

That reading is suggested by another statistic. All of the background singers who are profiled in depth in the film – and who are the movie’s real stars – are women: Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer, Judith Hill, Claudia Lennear, Darlene Love and Tata Vega. Of them, Rock-and-RollHall-of-Famer Love, who started out as a member of the backing group the Blossoms, is arguably the most famous.

Despite her 1963 hit, the Phil Spector-produced solo “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home),” even she didn’t pursue a serious solo career until she was in her 40s.

The distance alluded to in the title, which is taken from a comment made

by Springsteen near the beginning of the film, is both literal and metaphorical. The journey from anonymous edge of the stage to the spotlight, he says, “can be a pretty long walk.”

Other than Love, most of the background singers in the film never made it to center stage, despite their best efforts and, in some cases, despite industry acclaim. Fischer at one point shows off her 1992 Grammy for “How Can I Ease the Pain.”

If you go Stars: Two and a half Runs: 90 minutes Rated: PG-13; contains some obscenity and sexual material. can’t sing. Clayton’s backing vocals on the Rolling Stones’ 1969 “Gimme Shelter,” which include the line “Rape, murder, it’s just a shot away, it’s just a shot away,” are an indelible memory to anyone who’s ever heard the song. Even if you know it well, it’s great to hear that vocal track again here, isolated from Jagger’s singing. Clayton’s voice, all by itself, will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

That’s what background singers are supposed to do, without upstaging the star. They bring sex appeal and, in some cases, a dash of personality to a song. They also bring the hook, since that’s typically when their voices join in. As one commentator notes, whenever you sing along with the radio, you’re probably singing along with the background vocalist.

It’s also noted that many background singers brought race into the musical mix, when it was needed commercially. Who better than a black female vocalist to help make a blue-eyed soul singer sound a little less white? All of the six featured singers in “Twenty Feet” are women of color.

So, why have they had such a hard time making it? Lennear worked for many years as a Spanish teacher; Love cleaned houses, even as she was singing. Remarkably, no one in the film is a complainer.

“Who knows?” says Sting, who chalks the mystery of success up to such unquantifiables as luck, destiny and, perhaps most tellingly, the magic of the right material.

Of the artists featured in the film, Hill, a regular background singer for Wonder and a former contestant on “The Voice” television show, is the youngest.

At 29, she’s only beginning that “pretty long walk.” Because of her beautiful voice, I wish her luck.

Based on the career trajectories of the older women who came before her, she made need more than that.

Parents should teach young children that it’s not OK to lie Dear Doctor K: Lately my 4-yearold has started lying to me. She’ll say she didn’t break a toy, or push her brother, when I know she did.

How should I handle this?

Dear Reader: Almost all preschoolers will lie at one time or another – and it’s clear they know they’re lying, and that they shouldn’t be doing that. For example, when one child hits another and is challenged about it, here’s the usual sequence of lies: “I didn’t do it”; “I didn’t mean it”; “It didn’t hurt anyway!”

Each lie admits to the preceding lie. It’s as if the child realizes there’s no way he will get away with the lie, so his only hope is to dismiss the importance of the transgression.

Some preschoolers may not yet realize that it is wrong to lie. Now, at age 4, is the time to teach your child that lying is not acceptable.

Doing so at a young age will help mold your child’s behavior as she gets older.

To encourage truthfulness when you suspect wrongdoing, be upfront but not confrontational as you question your child. For example, ask an open-ended ques-

If your child has told a lie, keep your response short and to the point. Be sure to tell her first that you believe she has lied, and because of that, consequences will follow. If your child denies drawing on her walls, for example, you might say, “I know that you drew on your walls, as I saw you do it earlier today. It is never OK to lie to me. You won’t be able to play with your crayons for the rest of the day.” Do not ignore these seemingly small or harmless lies.

It is always helpful to praise your preschooler for being good, too. Compliment her when she tells the truth. Remind her: “I’m glad you told the truth about what happened. When you tell me the truth, I can trust you, and that makes me happy.”

Remember that children learn

right from wrong by watching and listening to the adults around them, especially their parents. If they see you telling a little white lie, they will conclude that lying is acceptable. “Do as I say, not as I do” is never an effective strategy, especially when dealing with young children.

A colleague of mine at Harvard Health Publications has a daughter. We’ll call her Cleo, short for a certain very self-confident Egyptian queen. Like all kids, Cleo sometimes does things she knows she shouldn’t. And when challenged, she sometimes lies about it. But more often, she is refreshingly honest ... and witty.

Here’s a recent gem, as related by her mom: Mom: “Cleo! You know you’re not supposed to throw a ball in the living room. Why on earth did you do that?”

Cleo: “I think it’s because I’m a kid, Mom.”

Young Ladies: Several months ago, this column listed the physical requirements for female models. Since then, we have had a large response from young women who feel they meet the physical requirements and want to know how they can become a model in their hometown. Well, girls, read on.

According to the beauty editors of several fashion magazines, you don’t have to pack up for New York in order to enjoy a career as a successful model. There are probably professional models, as well as modeling jobs, right where you live.

Breaking into modeling in your own city just requires some “homework” before you look for modeling work.

1. Learn as much as possible about the world of modeling today.

Check your library for books about modeling as a career. Read fashion magazines to find out how top models literally “groom for success.”

2. Check on modeling opportunities. Some to investigate: department stores (for fashion shows, makeup demonstrations), advertising agencies (for television and newspaper ads), local companies (for showroom demos and sales materials).

3. Take a good look at yourself. Height and weight requirements aren’t as strict for regional modeling as they are in national centers like New York, but you must still be slender. However, there are opportunities for plus-size models, as well.

4. Find a reputable modeling school or agency to work with you. A school helps would-be models improve their appearance, poise and self-con-

Then visit each one, asking about its history and placement record.

5. Consider some training in speech, acting or dance. Such lessons teach you how to project different feelings and moods.

6. You’ll need professional pictures, not portraits. These pictures are used to show to agencies and clients how you photograph. Three good ones for your portfolio are a headshot, a full-length pose and a smiling shot.

7. Personality is a must. Agencies want models to be attractive and outgoing. If you make a good impression at an interview, they know you’ll do so on a job.

8. Be professional.

Always arrive on time, prepared and well groomed for a “go-see” interview or assignment.

9. Keep up with current fashion and beauty trends, but do not go overboard. Don’t wear too much makeup. A fresh and natural face is best. Avoid looking too young, too sophisticated or too sexy. Versatility is the key.

10. Continue your education and career plans. Since local modeling is often just parttime work, many girls save the extra money for college or something special.

What did James Thurber believe is the one human achievement that made the long trip up from all fours seem well advised?

You have two four-card suits.

The player on your left opens one of another suit, your partner makes a takeout double, and righty passes. Assuming you do not have enough high-card power to jump or to cue-bid, which suit would you bid first?

The question is easy to answer if one suit is a major and the other a minor – you bid the major. But what if they are both majors or both minors, like South’s hand in today’s diagram? Which would you bid now?

The answer depends upon your point-count. If you have a weak hand, bid the lower-ranking. But if your hand is strong enough to bid twice, start with the higher-ranking. Then, if the auction continues and partner does not raise your suit, show the other suit on the next round.

In this deal, you should advance with one spade. West will make a takeout double, North will pass, and East will run to two clubs or two diamonds.

Now you rebid two hearts as planned. North might raise to three hearts or, liking his great major-suit holdings, jump to four hearts. If he bids only three hearts, you would like to raise to three-and-a-half hearts!

The play in four hearts is easy, given the great fit and friendly breaks. You will lose two clubs and one spade.
