HINSDALE – Although Nirav Shah is no stranger to helping others, the 31-year-old Hinsdale Central High School alumnus is taking it one step further by joining the Peace Corps in Zambia. For the next 27 months, the Westmont resident will teach public health in classrooms and assist local clinics with health education. “The duration was perfect actually, 27 months, to do something, learn something and assist in a country where assistance was needed the most,” Shah said. After attending College of DuPage, Shah went to California State University, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in international business and marketing in 2006. He headed east to New York for a job, but then traveled back to Chicago, where he enrolled at Benedictine University and earned a master’s degree in public health. While at Benedictine, Shah participated in a one-week program the school offered that sent him to Tanzania to help the people there while working in a monastery; a trip that would be the catalyst for his new path. “It kind of opened up my idea for my passion for global health,” Shah said. “This was my calling.” Shah wanted to concentrate his thesis on public health abroad and spoke with his dean about traveling to Kenya in 2010 to teach preventive care with HIV and AIDS through the organization Idealist.org.

Nirav Shah, 31, of Westmont, is currently in Zambia serving with the Peace Corps. The Hinsdale Central High School alumnus also has volunteered in Tanzania and Kenya. After returning home and graduating, Shah took a job at the American Cancer Society in Evanston, where he previously volunteered to provide rides to cancer patients throughout DuPage County to and from radiation sessions or other appointments. Shah has seen the effects of cancer firsthand, not just from volunteering, but also because when he was 11 years

old, he lost his father to stomach cancer. From tragedy would come compassion. “I just felt the connection,” he said of his work with the ACS. “Then I realized definitely what I was doing was important, but people across the pond needed our help the most.” Shah looked toward enrolling in the Peace Corps. He left for Zambia on June 11.
Q: What is your favorite local festival?
For the first three months, Shah will live with a host family and receive training before being immersed in the country’s culture. After that, Shah not only wants to assist with public health but also teach kids math, science or English on weekends. He isn’t done planning for the future, either. Oakbrook Center robbery investigation continues Video online
By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com OAK BROOK – One suspect is in custody after being shot and police were looking for two others as of Thursday morning after an armed robbery Sunday of C.D. Peacock jewelry store, 172 Oakbrook Center, police said. Oak Brook Police said Thursday the investigation is ongoing and there was no new information to report. “At this point there is no danger to the Village of Oak Brook or Oakbrook Center,” Oak Brook Police Chief James Kruger said Monday. At 3:40 p.m. Sunday, three men entered the store, according to Oak Brook Police. One allegedly used a four-pound sledgehammer to smash the top of a glass display case. An armed security guard at the store confronted the man with the sledgehammer as the other two suspects escaped. Police found the man with

An attempted robbery occurred at C.D. Peacock jewelry store, 172 Oakbrook Center, about 3:40 p.m. Sunday. the sledgehammer with a bullet wound to the abdomen. As of Tuesday, the wounded 24-year-old black male from Detroit was under police
guard at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. His condition was listed as critically stable. Police had not released his
name and no charges had been made as of Thursday. Kruger said the sledgehammer was the only weapon recovered at the scene and it is too soon to know if the other suspects had additional weapons. The two suspects at large fled in a black Jeep Liberty, west on 22nd Street, police said. Both suspects were described as black men in their 20s or early 30s. One was heavy set, about 5 feet 9 inches tall, 230 pounds with a tattoo on the right side of his neck, wearing a black T-shirt. The other man was described as taller, about 5 feet 11 inches tall, 160 pounds with a heavy beard and wearing white T-shirt.
The car was stolen about one to two hours prior to the robbery and belonged to an employee working at Oakbrook Center, Kruger said. The Jeep Liberty was abandoned in an Oak Brook Terrace office building parking lot and located by Oakbrook Terrace Police Department. It was then recovered by the Oak Brook Police Department and was to be processed for additional evidence. Normalcy returned Monday morning as C.D. Peacock opened for its regular hours. The store declined to comment on the robbery pending police investigation. Kruger said police were investigating how the three suspects originally arrived at Oakbrook Center and the police department was trying to obtain clearer video footage from other stores. “We’re also looking at some video footage that may possibly involve the vehicle we recovered,” he said.

Irritable Bowel, Celiac, Crohn’s or Colitis? Are you afraid to leave your house due to an unpredictable bowel? Have you tried diferent treatments but continue to sufer? Do you know the essentials for a healthy digestive system? Have you given up and decided to just live with it? he digestive system assimilates food (carbs, fats and proteins) to produce energy. It breaks down food into nutrient forms that your body can absorb. It uses enzymes, good bacteria and hydrochloric acid to break down food to a usable form. Your gut is a barrier, a tube that starts in your mouth, continues as your esophagus, small intestine, large intestine and rectum. 80% of your immune system is in your gut. When you break down the barrier (gut lining), toxins can “leak” into the blood stream leading to an immune response, inlammation and food allergies. Hippocrates, the father of medicine said… “look to the gut, there will you ind the origin of almost all human illness.”
Hi, my name is Dr. Jefrey E. Forzley with Lemont Natural Healthcare. I am a chiropractic physician and a holistic practitioner. I am passionate about helping people with chronic health conditions. I have been in practice for 28 years. As a holistic practitioner I evaluate the nervous system, immune system, endocrine system (hormones), diet essentials (Neuro-‐Metabolic Care), manage the underlying cause and use natural therapies to manage digestive disorders. here are many essentials required for proper digestion. Let’s talk about a few… Zinc is necessary to make hydrochloric acid (HCL). HCL is needed to break down food (protein) in the stomach and for production of methyl groups. Methyl groups turn on tumor suppressor genes and turn of oncogenes leading to potential cancer growth. If HCL is deicient, this results in poor digestion and a many imbalances due to a deiciency of methyl groups. HCL deiciency also leads to growth of pathological bacteria like H. Pylori, which can cause gastritis, stomach ulcers and possibly stomach cancer. Probiotics (good bacteria) are normally found in the gut. Optimal levels are needed for a proper functioning digestive system. hese probiotics are also part of your immune

system. hey play an important role in the protective barrier in your gut. Your gut makes up 80% of your immune system due to this barrier system. Antibiotics kill pathologic bacteria and infections but they also kill good bacteria and cause gut dysbiosis (imbalance). his dysbiosis can lead to pathologic bacterial, yeast and parasitic infections as well as food allergies. Digestive system inlammation is associated with IBS, Crohn’s, Celiac and Ulcerative Colitis. It is due to stress, poor diet, toxins and food allergies. Digestive inlammation leads to production of cytokines (inlammatory cells). hese cytokines travel in the blood to the brain and inlame the brain cells. he brain (mesencephalon) in turn controls the digestive system. his leads to a vicious cycle resulting in an inlammatory cascade which exponentially worsens over time. Successfully managing digestive conditions involves balancing the nervous system, digestive system and immune system as well as improving the diet, decreasing gut inlammation and detoxifying the body. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a digestive disorder that includes abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating and alternating constipation and diarrhea. he cause is unknown but theories include toxic overload, intestinal infections, inlammation from stress and poor diet generalized condition of the digestive system poor signaling from the brain to the digestive system for proper function.
Medications to treat digestive disorders can weaken your immune system and lead to infections and immune degenerative conditions including cancer. hese medications may give you symptom relief but have side efects and DO NOT ADDRESS the UNDERLYING CAUSE of your condition.
Testimonial As someone who lives with chronic nausea, poor digestion and anxiety, I assumed I was out of options when countless doctors told me that there was nothing else they could do for me. hey told me it was likely all in my head. hen I visited Dr. Forzley and he told me from the initial consultation that he was very conident he could help me. I was so excited that I cried. No other doctor has ever been so much on my side. Now, 8 weeks into treatment, I am nausea free, anxiety free and my digestion is normal. I have started living a life I never thought I could live. My body is a machine, slowed and dirtied by processed foods and environmental toxins. But with the help of Dr. Forzley, my body is on the way back to an optimal state for long term health and happiness. Veronica M.
Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity is a digestive condition that involves gluten sensitivity like Celiac Disease but is not an autoimmune disorder. It involves digestive symptoms (pain, bloating…), fatigue, joint pains as well as neurologic symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, poor memory, brain fog and diiculty concentrating. Celiac Disease, Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis are autoimmune diseases. An autoimmune disorder is when your immune system attacks your body instead of protecting it. here is NO CURE for autoimmune disorders. But you can calm down the immune response NATURALLY and decrease the efects of the tissue destruction. If you have an autoimmune disease like Celiac, Crohn’s or Ulcerative Colitis and you do not balance and calm down the autoimmune destruction, your immune system can attack other tissues and cause multiple autoimmune disorders. It is common for people with an autoimmune disorder to have multiple autoimmune diseases for this reason. Medications are not always the long term answer.
Holistic therapy can manage digestive conditions by: 1) inding and balancing the underlying cause and… 2) using natural therapies that work with your body.

OAK BROOK – Fans from all walks of life gathered today to celebrate a second Stanley Cup win in four years at the parade for the Chicago Blackhawks, but fresh off the jubilation of Monday’s win, rumors swirled about the cup’s appearance at the York Tavern in Oak Brook. Cars lined York Road and Blackhawks fans from all over the area gathered at York Tavern after word got out coach Joel Quenneville might arrive with the Stanley Cup on Tuesday. But to the dismay of fans, the Stanley Cup did not make an appearance, and neither did Quenneville at the tavern, but he was in Hinsdale at Page’s Restaurant, according to a restaurant manager, for breakfast, prompting several residents to suspect he was carrying the cup around to familiar places. Owner Vito Moreci said York Tavern is a favorite of the Hinsdale resident. After his first Stanley Cup championship in 2010, Quenneville brought the Cup to the tavern after the parade in Chicago. Moreci showed off the photos from that day; they hung on the wall near the bar. “The cup, they’re going to bring in after the parade from Chicago,” Moreci said. “Nothing is scheduled yet, though.” The storm that passed through the area Monday didn’t help the chaos however, as power was out along York Road. York Tavern didn’t have power and had to rely on a generator to stay open. Long lines of traffic, broken stop lights and pouring rain weren’t enough to keep fans away, and one of the reasons is because of Quenneville’s presence in town. “Everybody likes him because he’s such a nice person,” Moreci said.

By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com CLARENDON HILLS – Despite its relatively small size, the village of Clarendon Hills is complex. On one hand, it is known as a quaint family town, but at the same time, there is a want to bring in more business and modernization. Clarendon Hills is in the middle of addressing its downtown master plan update, which calls for an enhanced downtown area with improved pedestrian shopping and a range of new residential opportunities. However, as residents have voiced in previous workshops, there also is the want of continuing small town charm, sufficient green space and a family friendly neighborhood. On Tuesday, the downtown master plan design committee met at village hall. As the design committee, members take on the role of trying to figure out how to enhance the downtown area with better signs, landscaping, architecture and then mix that with the small-town environment present today. The committee did not have the easiest task in generating design ideas that would please everyone. On Tuesday, it was about getting as many people and ideas involved as they could. “I think our job is to provoke conversation at these meetings and get people to say what is good or bad with what we come up with,” Chairman Mike Abraham said. The committee, which has been meeting since April, now is looking to collect photos and conduct research on what type of structures they want to see in town, including anything from bike racks, to business signs to
what areas they want to see as green spaces. They also are making sure enough people come into town to make it economically successful. “It can’t just be ascetically pleasing and look cool; it has to bring in foot traffic,” said Annie Horton-Krug, a member of the committee. One suggestion was to bring in business and develop the area around the Metra station to improve shopping in Clarendon Hills while commuting by train. Design is one of the committees that is working to present a plan for the future of the village. Others include steering committee, joint committee, land use committee and economic development committee. Abraham said at one point, members of these committees will get together to share ideas and culminate one recommendation that includes everything, which eventually will be brought to the village board for presentation. The next design committee meeting will be July 23.

8SOUND OFF Drive more safely Distractions are everywhere, but what about safety? Drivers must put your vehicle lights on so others can see you at dawn, dusk and when it is raining. Walkers must walk against traffic. It’s the law, folks, for yours and our protection from accident and injury. Please pay attention when you are using our roadways.
DDS vs. MD Hey, just to clarify the ongoing debate about the letters DDS that a dentist earns: DDS stands for doctor of dental surgery, MD stands for a medical doctor. A doctor of dental surgery is referred to as a dentist A medical doctor, doctor of medicine, is referred to as a physician. So if someone is running for office that is a doctor of dental surgery, they have every right to use the title “doctor.”
DDS vs. MD, part II
How to Sound Off
A dentist is a DDS, which means doctor of dental science. “Ph.D.” means doctor of philosophy, in a given field. MD means doctor of medicine; and EDD means doctor of education. The individuals holding these and many other earned doctoral degrees are all correctly addressed as “doctor.” What is the problem here?

Enough with the chickens
Long shoelaces
Unsafe go-karts
Why are shoelaces so darn long? They’re too long to tighten them when you’re tying them and so you have to loosen them and then you end up having to retie them again. It’s on sports shoes mainly.
This is to the parents of the kids with the go-kart in Downers Grove. You really need to know what your kids are up to. It is not cool when they’re driving across people’s lawns. I also don’t believe it is safe or legal for them to be riding down the street.
Enough with the chickens already. Hasn’t the Village Board wasted enough time on this silly subject, and does the La Grange arrange Police Department really need more people who will now be calling them to complain about noisy and smelly chickens in their neighbor’s yard? Please, no chickens in La Grange.

There’s a bill about to become state law that’s going to expunge or seal records of crimes committed by people when they were younger or considered misdemeanors. I don’t know what the records mean; I mean, our record is a record of things that you do. Some are good, some are bad. In this case, they’re bad. If employers or prospective employers want to choose to ignore those things, let them, but by keeping it secret, you’re risking the safety and security of people in the future.

Yes, I’d like to sound off about the recent 1.5 percent tax increase on restaurants in Westmont. The reason that they passed this tax is because they’ve gotten rid of the home rule. The reason that, I believe, the home rule was gotten rid of was because it was poorly worded on the ballot. There was just another incentive in Westmont to try to figure out how to get business here. Increasing the tax businesses have to pay is not going to increase business here. The village trustees need to come up with a better idea, instead of taxing the poor hard-working citizens who are trying to make Westmont a lively downtown once again. Some think this tax is going to solve all our problems. What it is going to do is create more because businesses are going to leave.

Friends remember the Andrus family during a fundraiser at USA Skate Center in Romeoville on June 14. Jeana, David, Jennifer and Jessica Andrus of Darien were found dead June 11 from an apparent murder-suicide. Proceeds from the event will be donated to help cover the family’s funeral expenses.
Friends and family recently put together a fundraiser for the Andruses – the family found dead in their Darien home in an apparent murder-suicide – to raise money to pay for funeral expenses. In times of tragedy, this is when the community really needs to pull together, and the fundraiser serves as a perfect example of doing so. The American Music Institute in Clarendon Hills is offering a great opportunity to local residents with its new Facebook contest. Fans can make a Facebook campaign, and whoever receives the most “likes” of at least 500 will win a scholarship for a year’s worth of free music lessons in guitar, piano or violin. The deadline is July 31. For information, visit facebook.com/americanmusic institute or call 630-850-8505.

Restaurant reviews
Ivy a sparkling setting for culinary gem WHEATON – One of Wheaton’s historic buildings was most recently reimagined as a fine-dining restaurant for steaks, chops and seafood in 2009, providing a unique setting for Ivy and its delicious fare. On a recent Sunday afternoon, we stepped inside the brick building covered in the ivy that lends the restaurant its name. Outside is an elegant, foliage-filled patio, but a light rain prompted us indoors, where we were surprised to discover a spectacular space originally created as a chapel early in the last century, then converted to retail uses before its latest incarnation. A soaring cathedral ceiling directs the eye skyward, where balconies lead to added dining areas for parties. High on the patio-side wall above multiple French doors providing green views are small, stained-glass windows where light filters softly through the leaves. It’s an exquisite setting for a meal. We asked to be seated next to the fireplace and warmed up with a glass of wine. Our personable server kindly volunteered a tasting when he noticed my indecision on the selections. My dining companion opted for a craft beer on draft. Soon, a delectable and still-warm loaf of bread was delivered to the table, accompanied by butter melded with a hint of honey. We shared a cup of clam chowder that ranks among the best we’ve enjoyed, bursting with homemade flavor in the perfectly balanced seafood and vegetable pairing. The menu tempted with Gorgonzola Crusted Lamb Chops with mashed potatoes, grilled asparagus and a port wine demi-glace; Diver Scallops pan seared and served with leek and fennel compote with sambuca butter sauce; and Savory Peach Chicken, a spicy blackened chicken breast with polenta cakes, sauteed spinach and peach chutney When I learned the house ribs special was such a hit that it recently was made a permanent part of the menu, I went for the half slab. Generously meaty, fall-off-the-bone pork ribs were served with a tasty barbecue sauce with a little heat to it. The seasoned fries were good, and my companion noted there’s even a little zip to the cole slaw. He selected the shaved prime rib sandwich featuring generous slices

BOYS BASEBALL
Bill Ackerman – backerman@shawmedia.com
Hinsdale Central shortstop Ryan Haff (seated) fields a ground ball and tosses it to second baseman Adam Dressler for a force out against Hinsdale South.
.312: Red Devils’ team batting average this spring. Tommy Concklin finished with a .450 average while Chris Botsoe (.444) and Matt Muellner (.436) led the everyday players. Highlight: Behind Division I-bound pitchers Christian Bokich (Miami of Ohio), Adam Dressler (Purdue) and Bobby Skogsbergh (Boston College), the Red Devils were pegged to be a contender in the competitive West Suburban Silver conference. Although they struggled at times, they took two of three from eventual WSS-champ Oak Park-River Forest midway through the conference season to jump into the thick of the race in late April. Central took two games from Downers Grove North in the WSS finale to ensure a winning conference record at 10-8.
BOYS GYMNASTICS
Bill Ackerman – backerman@shawmedia.com
55.950: Combined scores awarded to Brian Thompson in six events at the state meet. Highlight: With Brian Thompson leading the way, Hinsdale Central made its name well known at the state gymnastics meet. Thompson brought home a pair of state titles, tying for top honors on pommel horse and winning outright on the high bar, both with scores of 9.550. Thompson also had top-four showings on rings (tied for second with a 9.30) and parallel bars (fourth with a score of 9.40). Thompson finished second in the all-around, and the Red Devils were sixth as a team (149.650) with Jack Schmidt, Sam Hamilton and Alex Gelz adding to the team score.
Martin Joyce serves the ball during his run to the state title last month.
BOYS TENNIS 23: Margin of victory for the Red Devils at the state tournament. They tallied 59 points while runner-up Lake Forest scored 36. Highlight: Seeing Hinsdale Central’s boys tennis team win a state title is a regular occurrence, but the Red Devils outdid themselves this spring. Martin Joyce and the doubles team of Eddie Grabill and Harold Martin won championships, and with the tandem of Alex Hagermoser and Peter Heneghan taking second and singles player Michale Lorenzini placing third (after a semifinal defeat to Joyce) the Red Devils set a new state record for team points scored in the state tournament.
GIRLS SOCCER 61: Goals scored on the season for the Red Devils. Three times they scored seven or more goals. Highlight: Behind a water-tight defense led by seniors Katie Camden, Katherine Treankler and Lauren Zapka, the Red Devils captured the West Suburban Silver title with a 6-0 record and only one goal against, and they were even better in the postseason. Central gave up just four goals in seven postseason games and pitched four shutouts, and with Casey May and Alison Cerny scoring timely goals throughout the playoffs, it made its way to the state championship game. The Red Devils finished second in the state and earned their second state trophy in the past five years.
BADMINTON 40-0: Ailynna Chen’s record through the regular season and the conference and sectional tournaments. Highlight: The Red Devils took top honors at two tournaments during the regular season, but that was just the start. Senior Ailynna Chen, undefeated during the regular season, won a sectional title and followed that with a top-12 state finish. Fellow senior Brina Gartlan won two matches at state in the singles draw and the all-junior doubles tandem of Amy Wey and Alex Ritter also won a match as the Red Devils finished 14th in the state.

Highlight: Winning a conference title in any sport is never easy, and defending a conference title is even harder. Yet that’s precisely what Hinsdale South’s baseball team did this spring. With conference pitchers Mike Rizzo, Mike Marrera and Matt Reschke leading the way, the Hornets defended the West Suburban Gold title they won last spring by scoring 10 or more runs in seven of their 16 wins in the conference.

Tavaris Binion sprints to all-state honors in the 200-meter state finals May 25 in Charleston.
2:12.56: Tavaris Binion’s combined time in eight sprint races at the state meet, including prelims and finals of the 100- and 200-meter dashes in 2012 and 2013. Highlight: Battling through an infected and ingrown toenail on his left foot, defending 100-meter state champion (and the 2012 fifth-place finisher in the 200) Tavaris Binion didn’t quite reach the same heights this spring but earned two more allstate finishes. He took fifth in the 100 (11.05 seconds) and then placed ninth in the 200 (22.83) to become the Hornets’ first track athlete to earn four state medals in track and field.
1: Number of dual meets the Hornets lost this year, a 12-3 decision to fellow state heavyweight Fremd early in the season. Highlight: The Hornets won the West Suburban Gold regular season title, the conference tournament title, and the sectional tournament title, but they saved the best for last. Senior Emma Adcock won her first five matches at the state tournament (four in just two games) on her way to a state runner-up finish. The doubles team of Sara Devine and Emily Spencer also won five times at state for a top-16 finish. Diana Joseph and the tandem of Angela Tsarouhis and Cindy Stella also qualified for state, and as a team, South finished seventh in the state.
GIRLS SOCCER 7: Number of games the Hornets won via shutout this season, including 5-0 in a regional semifinal game. Highlight: South made up for a streaky season (a three-game losing streak preceded a three-game winning streak midway through the year) with its play in the postseason. Kelly Flemm’s opening goal sparked South to a shutout win over Chicago U-High in the playoff opener, and it rode that momentum to a 7-1 victory over host Nazareth in the regional championship game. Five different players (Brenda Maugeri three times, Kerry Just, Jessica Koziol, Sarah Puz and Julie Vezzani) scored, and Flemm had three assists against Nazareth in a victory that ensured a winning record. South finished the year 11-10 after a defeat in the sectional semifinal.

4: West Suburban Gold all-conference players for South: Jessica Buckridge, Lauren Cairo, Sabrina Kuchta and Emily Mihalkanin. Highlight: It wasn’t a great start to the season for the Hornets, who got out to an 0-5 start and were 3-8 after falling to Downers Grove South in mid-April. But that rocky start was long forgotten by the time the postseason rolled around. After falling to Lyons Township late in the season, the Hornets turned around and outlasted the Lions 5-3 in nine innings in a regional semifinal game, then went on to win a regional title with a 2-1 victory over Mother McAuley.

SPRING HIGHLIGHT REEL: DOWNERS SOUTH
Mustangs capture first volleyball state title BASEBALL

The boys volleyball team raises the state championship trophy.
Bill Ackerman – backerman@shawmedia.com
13: Number of times the Mustangs scored eight runs or more in a game. They scored in double-digits eight times. Highlight: Winning 20 games in high school baseball ensures a winning season. Winning 30 places a team in elite company. The Mustangs reached elite status this season, topping Waubonsie Valley, 4-1, in the regional championship game for win No. 30. The Mustangs were anchored by the strong pitching of Brian Glowicki, Zach Burdi, Danny Mayer, Nick Alfini and Zach Taylor.
Zach Burdi delivers a pitch during the playoffs.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL 6-0: The Mustangs’ record in West Suburban Gold play this spring. Four of those wins came in two games. Highlight: The Mustangs won a conference title, but the big prize came June 1 when they topped Lincoln-Way North 25-18, 25-20 for the state title. Nick Timreck (11 kills), Mike Schmitt (10 kills), David Pawlicki (29 assists) and David DeMarco (14 digs) led the title match effort, but it was a team effort all season as five players (Timreck, Schmitt, Will Tischler, John Hanek and Austin Adank) had more than 100 kills and five (DeMarco, Pawlicki, Hanek, Tyler Zowaski and Steve Kryk) tallied more than 100 digs. South finished the year 31-10.
GIRLS SOCCER 32-2: Margin by which the Mustangs outscored their West Suburban Gold conference foes. They won four of six games via shutout. Highlight: With several new players stepping into larger roles and a new coaching staff taking over (led by head coach Abby Anderson), the Mustangs would have been forgiven for a so-so season. But there was nothing average about the season as South won a conference title, finished with a winning record (13-9-1) and played for a regional title. Nicole Janowiak (12), Kelly Stapleton (11) and Autumn Rasmussen (10) finished double digits in goal scoring, and Jamie Furio tallied four shutouts in net.
SOFTBALL
BOYS TENNIS
7: Length of the the Mustangs’ longest winning streak this season, from April 16 to May 1. Highlight: Coming out of the gate, the Mustangs limped to a 4-5 start. But with a young team that started just two seniors most of the time, South started 11-0 in the West Suburban Gold and won the conference title and performed even better in the postseason. The Mustangs, seeded No. 9 in the sectional, took out higher seeds Naperville North, Naperville Central and Downers Grove North as they won regional and sectional titles.
3: Number of matches the Mustangs lost in West Suburban Gold conference play. They won 39 matches and all six duals plus the conference tournament. Highlight: South breezed through the West Suburban Gold conference and won a sectional title with a perfect score of 36 and scored 17 points at the state tournament, where they finished seventh in the team picture. Singles players Kyle Leto and John Artus and the doubles team of Cody Freischlag and Christian San Andres had winning 3-2 records at state.

Hub Arkush to cover Bears football for Shaw Media By SHAW MEDIA Hub Arkush, longtime editor and publisher of Pro Football Weekly and senior football analyst with WSCR-670 The Score in Chicago, has been hired by Shaw Media to cover the Bears for its daily, weekly and digital publications. Beginning in mid-July, Arkush will provide daily Bears news and analysis to Shaw Media publications, including Crystal Lake-based Northwest Herald, the Daily Chronicle in DeKalb, the Kane County Chronicle and Sauk Valley Media in Sterling and Dixon. Arkush’s work also will
be featured in dozens of Shaw Media’s weekly publications, including the Suburban Life weeklies in DuPage, Will and suburban Cook counties, and the Lake County Journal. Shaw Media also will launch HubArkush.com, which will include breaking Bears and NFL news and blogs, video analysis from Arkush and other Shaw reporters, photo slideshows and more. “We are thrilled to have Hub joining our team,” said John Rung, president of Shaw Media. “He is a veteran journalist and one of the nation’s most respected pro football experts. We are confident Hub’s
comprehensive package of content – combined with the football analysis provided by other Shaw reporters – will be of tremendous value to our readers and advertisers.” A veteran NFL analyst, Arkush joined Pro Football Weekly in 1976 and became editor and publisher in 1979. At its peak, Pro Football Weekly was the largest NFL publication in the country with more than 750,000 readers. Arkush, an award-winning broadcaster, was hired by the Chicago Bears Radio Network in 1987 to be color commentator during Bears game broadcasts, a position he held until 2004. He currently is a senior
football analyst on the Score and a sideline reporter and NFL Insider on Dial Global Sports’ national radio broadcasts of NFL games. He’s also hosted, written and edited several TV shows dedicated to the Bears and the NFL. Pro Football Weekly On TV, which began in 1988 on NBC, is now broadcast by Comcast Sports Net. “Watching, analyzing, reporting on and writing and talking about pro football has been my passion for over 30 years, and the opportunity to join Shaw Media and focus my work where I’ve lived my whole life on the team I grew up following is a dream come
true,” Arkush said. “I am extremely impressed by the brand of journalism practiced by the folks at Shaw, and I couldn’t be more excited about this opportunity to join their team.” Mitch Rosen, program director at 670 The Score, praised Shaw for hiring Arkush. “The name Hub Arkush is synonymous with professional football,” Rosen said. “Hub is a brand that transcends knowledge, insight, and opinion when talking about the NFL. When Hub is on the air for a pre-game show, talk show, or segment report, he brings great energy and insight like no one else in the business.”

The mother and son team make up Higgins Glass Studio, 33 E. Quincy, entrusted to the Wimmers to carry on the art crafted by their long time mentors, Fran and Michael Higgins, who began the company in 1948. Louise and Jonathan agree that it was Fran’s ideas and Michael’s energy and ingenuity that led these two huge talents to start their work out if their Chicago apartment in 1948. Over the years their art sold in such major retailers as Marshall Field’s, Georg Jensen and Bullocks Wilshire, the very high end store in the California based department store chain. In 1966, the Higgins decided to return to private studio work and set up their offices in Riverside. The website notes that “here they were free to set their own goals, meet their own standards and design in the direction their hearts and minds led them.” There’s a lot of history in Higgins, and the Wimmers are proud of their work and the company.
