LEMONT – The Lemont Fire Protection District Board of Trustees approved the contract for Battalion Chief George Rimbo to take the reigns as the new chief during its June 20 meeting.

His father, Rick Rimbo, is a member of the board of trustees and abstained from voting on his contract approval. The rest of the board voted in favor of his approval.

Rimbo, 44, will start the new position July 18. The contract is for one year and $125,000.

Within the year, he will be up for evaluation.

“I’m humbled that you chose me,” Rimbo said. “I look forward to all the possibilities with becoming the next fire chief.”

Rimbo first joined the department as a firefighter when he was 19 and has served as a battalion chief for four years.

The final three candidates were within the district.

“We as a board are very proud that all the candidates came from within,” said President Victoria Cobbett.

Outgoing Fire Chief Carl Churulo endorsed Rimbo as the most qualified of the three, board member Michael Kasperski said.

“The chief basically pointed out George as the one,” Kasperski said.

Churulo said he has gotten to know Rimbo, who works 40hour weeks as a training safety officer.

He has seen how well he works with other departments and is impressed with his

LEMONT - The Village of Lemont and the Lemont Police Department have applied for a grant with the U.S. Department of Justice to fund a full-time school resource officer at Old Quarry Middle School.

The COPS Hiring Program grant would be for three years and as much as $125,000.

During a presentation at the Lemont-Bromberek Community School District 113A Board of Education meeting June 19, Lemont Police Chief Kevin Shaughnessy said the officer would provide a law enforcement presence, education for students and a resource for staff.

“Having one person who is a go-to person in your school will benefit the school and the community,” he said.

The officer would be a conduit for all schools in the district, but would be primarily involved with the middle school, Shaughnessy said.

Lemont Mayor Brian Reaves, who was also at the meeting, said that having an officer at the school is crucial even if a grant is not awarded.

He said that a frequent communication he receives from Lemont residents is “asking

Shaughnessy said the timing of the application for the grant has nothing to do with the bomb threat at Old Quarry Middle School in March.

The national trend has veered

towards having student resource officers in middle schools, he said.

Lemont High School has had a student resource officer for about 15 years, according to Shaughnessy.

He said the fact that there is a squad car at the high school every day doesn’t create any apprehension for the parents. However, parents for District 113A students think there is something wrong when they see a car at their schools, even if it is for something routine such as a DARE class.

“The idea of having police around as an expectation, I think, will benefit the overall concern of parents, too,” Shaughnessy said.

According to the Department of Justice website, the grant announcement is expected on Sept. 30. Shaughnessy is optimistic that the application will be approved, given the department’s success in earning past grants.

Superintendent Susan Birkenmaier wrote a letter of support for the grant bid.

“Any additional assistance we can receive from the Village of Lemont and the police department to support students and staff is welcome,” she said.

Brothers in Scouting: Siblings complete Eagle Scout projects Third time’s the charm for Lemont Scout Boy Scout comes to rescue of animal shelter in Bolingbrook

LEMONT – When he joined the Cub Scouts in first grade, Kevin Leahy set the goal to become an Eagle Scout.

“I have three older cousins who are all Eagle Scouts ,and it really made me want to achieve that,” he said.

Leahy had two Eagle Scout projects fall through before he completed renovations to the conference room at Lemont United Methodist Church. That project took three revisions and a yearand-a-half of planning to complete.

The renovations, which were conducted April 5 to 14, included framing and dry walling the concrete block room, installing closets and shelves, staining and hanging the wainscoting and

LEMONT – When Boy Scout Troop 49 member Brian Leahy of Lemont chose to help the Humane Haven Animal Shelter in Bolingbrook for his Eagle Scout project, the timing could not have been better.

While Leahy was seeking approval from the Boy Scouts to collect kitty litter and dog food for the shelter, an April storm flooded the shelter, causing it to be evacuated. The animals were safely rescued, but the shelter lost

all of its supplies.

“I was pretty surprised when I heard it had been flooded, and excited,” Leahy said. “Excited that I could do something about it.”

Leahy canvassed Lemont with notices about his collection and arranged a shop-and-drop at Pet Supplies Plus in Bolingbrook.

The project was completed June 8. Leahy collected 805 pounds of kitty litter, 815 pounds of dog food, 31 pounds of cat food and 31 pounds of kitten food.

He also did odd jobs such as yard work to earn about $2,000 needed to complete the project.

Leahy came up with his first Eagle Scout project idea in seventh grade. He wanted

Leahy has been a life-long animal lover and said he

wants to continue to work with animal shelters in the future.

“I just like helping out with animals,” he said.

“I learned more through the failed attempts of the project,” he said. “Just rethinking it and trying to figure out how to make it work.”

While completing his project, Leahy watched his older brother, Kevin, finish his own Eagle Scout project.

“I thought it was really cool,” he said.

LEMONT – Lemont Mayor Brian Reaves distributed checks to community organizations during the Monday Lemont Village Board meeting.

The money came from the annual Mayor’s Drive for Charity, which collected close to $40,000 this year.

Reaves commended the organizations in attendance at the meeting.

Storm results in two car crashes, one injury LEMONT – The Lemont Fire Protection District responded to two car crashes after a thunderstorm blew through Lemont shortly before 6 p.m. Monday.

Why the Lemont Park District matters to me I can’t believe it’s been more than 25 years since I saw the need for Early Childhood programs in the community.

Starting as a part-time district employee, I moved forward to help create original and imaginative programs and classes specifically designed for young children.

I knew I was meant to do this. I simply loved planning, implementing and marketing programs and classes that enrich young children, enabling them to grow and learn.

I am pleased to report that the Early Childhood program COMMUNITY category, which previously VOICE had zero offerings, now has more than 70 options.

Pam In 2009, I secured a fullCarter time position at the Lemont Park District, heading up preschool and Early Childhood programming.

I love that I have a hand in helping make priceless memories for so many children in the community. A few weeks ago, we hosted the annual preschool graduation programs at the district. Every year, I get to see the talented individuals, essential members of our preschool program, shine as they perform in the show. Seeing their smiling faces is an incredibly heartfelt experience.

I also am extremely lucky to have a staff of phenomenal teachers – they are truly top notch.

My experience at the Lemont Park District has varied widely, from senior programming to summer camps to creating and implementing special events such as Breakfast with Santa and Daddy Daughter Date Night.

I also launched the Walkers Club – a program specifically designed for participants older than 55 who enjoy walking at the LPD’s CORE indoor track.

I am pleased to lead the district’s Guest Services Committee, which concentrates on impeccable customer service. I was incredibly honored when my peers nominated me for the South Suburban Parks & Recreation Professional Association’s “Professional of the Year” award in 2013. LPD is truly a great place to be every day.

I hope everyone has a fantastic summer and can enjoy the special events we have on tap.

Andrew Arvans of Lemont volunteered to ride the waves of appreciation for the Lemont High School Cheer Team during the annual Keepataw Days Parade in downtown Lemont. The Keepataw Days organizers recently held a fundraiser to prevent the annual event from being canceled.

The organizers of Lemont’s Keepataw Days Festival recently hosted the Family Fun Fest fundraiser to raise money to keep the yearly festival alive. Lemont Township also played a part in the execution of the fundraiser. It’s heartening to see the community come together in an effort to save a beloved local event.

DDS vs. MD Hey, just to clarify the ongoing debate about the letters DDS that a dentist earns: DDS stands for doctor of dental surgery, MD stands for a medical doctor.

So if someone is running for office that is a doctor of dental surgery, they have every right to use the title “doctor.”

OBITUARIES DENNIS JAMES HAFEY Dennis James Hafey, May 20, 1959 - June 20, 2013. Dennis passed away at his home, due to failing health, on Thursday, June 20, 2013, in Lemont, Illinois.

He was born and raised in Joliet, Illinois, and attended Joliet area schools. He was one of nine children in the Hafey family.

Dennis is survived by his loving and caring partner, Marsha Tasharski, Lemont, Illinois. He is also survived by his mother, Helen L. Hafey, of Lemont (formerly of Joliet); brothers, Bob (Sandy) Hafey of Homer Glen, Illinois; J. Patrick (Robin) Hafey of Sun City, Arizona; and his sisters, Barbara (Bob) McCormick of Aurora, Illinois; Mary Ellen (Chuck) Burkart of Naperville, Illinois; June (Mike) Gurnitz of Plainfield, Illinois; Laurie (Bob) Mayfield of Fort Collins, Colorado; and Karen (James) DiTommaso of Mundelein, Illinois; also including numerous nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews He was preceded in death by his father, Robert B. Hafey (1988); and his brother, Michael Hafey (1971).

Dennis will be remembered as living life his way. He was very artistic, creative, and musical. He was outspoken on many topics and had a quick sense of humor. Dennis will now be reunited with his “always remembered and never forgotten” brother, Michael.

A private service will be held at a later date in Joliet, Illinois, for the immediate family.

She was past president of the Lemont Historical Society, and was a member of the Red Hats, the Lemont Garden Club, and the Lemont Book Club. Joanne was very active in volunteering, especially in distributing food for meals on wheels. She enjoyed life to its fullest, as evidenced by her love of world wide traveling.

DuPage River now clean after project

By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com Nearly two decades ago, the DuPage River was filled with radioactive sludge, invasive species, erosion and more.

Finally, after eight and a half years of work, the river has regained much of its former glory. The work was accomplished through a joint effort between the DuPage Forest Preserve District, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, DuPage and Will counties, Warrenville, the Warrenville Park District and Kerr-McGee, the latest owners of the property that caused much of the damage.

“I don’t know when the realization that radioactive material was not a good thing happened, but there was a lot of it in the area,” Forest Preserve Ecologist Jessi DeMartini said.

In the 1930s, the Rare Earths facility in West Chicago extracted rare elements from the ground to collect ores, including the naturally occurring radioactive element thorium. It created “sand tails,” or radioactive waste, which piled up behind the factory for decades. That eventually ran off into the nearby Kress Creek.

While the levels were minimally harmfully to humans - DeMartini said “you would basically have to wallow in it for 30 years or ingest it to get cancer” – the EPA and local communities felt they still should remove it in the early 1990s.

As the agencies went up and down the creek, creating more than 19,000 soil borings to assess the contamination level, they realized the effort must have a wide scope – up to 8.2 miles required work.

As the scale became clear, said John Oldenburg, director of the Office of Natural Resources in the Forest District, in a presentation recently, an opportunity presented itself to “rebuild it from the riverbed up.”

“It was a huge opportunity to try and incorporate a naturalization and diversity of a river system that was basically considered impaired by the EPA already,” DeMartini said. “Not just because of the thorium, but because it was also a highly urbanized system.

“We just took what was going to happen and turned it around into something positive, supportive and sustain-

able for aquatic organisms and for the aesthetics of the area and recreation.”

In 2005, work began to reconstruct the riverbed. Several dams that had stockpiled thorium were taken down, the riverbed itself was “re-sculpted” and multiple natural fish and plant species were reintroduced. More than 20 acres of wetlands were created across the river floodplain to establish new habitats and store floodwater, DeMartini said.

But the project isn’t over yet, she said. The next phase will include work on a threemile stretch of the riverbank in the McDowell Grove Forest Preserve. The work will be partially funded by a $1.37 million grant from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. In addition, the agency will continue to monitor the health of the water system and introduce new fish and invertebrates.

DeMartini said it truly was a joint effort, crediting construction company Sevenson Environmental and Wills Berk Halsey Engineering for offering the resources the river needed to recover.

“You put the spirit, the art, the biology and the ecology together and you let the river work with what you give it,” she said. “We just gave it gifts and let the river sort itself out over time.”

On a recent Sunday afternoon, we stepped inside the brick building covered in the ivy that lends the restaurant its name. Outside is an elegant, foliage-filled patio, but a light rain prompted us indoors, where we were surprised to discover a spectacular space originally created as a chapel early in the last century, then converted to retail uses before its latest incarnation.

A soaring cathedral ceiling directs the eye skyward, where balconies lead to added dining areas for parties. High on the patio-side wall above multiple French doors providing green views are small, stained-glass windows where light filters softly through the leaves.

It’s an exquisite setting for a meal.

We asked to be seated next to the fireplace and warmed up with a glass of wine. Our personable server kindly volunteered a tasting when he noticed my indecision on the selections. My dining companion opted for a craft beer on draft.

Soon, a delectable and still-warm loaf of bread was delivered to the table, accompanied by butter melded with a hint of honey.

We shared a cup of clam chowder that ranks among the best we’ve enjoyed, bursting with homemade flavor in the perfectly balanced seafood and vegetable pairing.

The menu tempted with Gorgonzola Crusted Lamb Chops with mashed potatoes, grilled asparagus and a port wine demi-glace; Diver Scallops pan seared and served with leek and fennel compote with sambuca butter sauce; and Savory Peach Chicken, a spicy blackened chicken breast with polenta cakes, sauteed spinach and peach chutney When I learned the house ribs special was such a hit that it recently was made a permanent part of the menu, I went for the half slab. Generously meaty, fall-off-the-bone pork ribs were served with a tasty barbecue sauce with a little heat to it. The seasoned fries were good, and my companion noted there’s even a little zip to the cole slaw.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL 4: Increase in victories within the South Suburban Conference this spring compared to a season ago.

Lemont finished 7-7 in league play in 2013.

Highlight: For a relatively young Indians program, the 2013 season was a major step in the right direction. With every starter back from 2012, Lemont wrapped up the spring with a 17-15 overall record. More importantly, after winning their first-ever regional match last season, the Indians picked up a pair of postseason victories this time around before losing 27-25, 31-29 to Plainfield East in the Bolingbrook regional final. Mike Krueger topped the Indians with 323 kills. Adam Strube totaled 150 digs and Ryan Leadley dished out 587 assists.

BOYS TENNIS 22: Points scored by the Indians at the Joliet West sectional, which resulted in the team’s first-ever sectional championship.

Highlight: May 18 turned out to be a memorable day for Lemont’s boys tennis program, which captured its first sectional title after sitting atop the standings at the Joliet West event. Sophomore Nick Urban qualified for the state meet in singles after placing third while the doubles team of Alex Vasic and Jake Smagacz also moved on courtesy of their third-place showing.
