Reader tips lead to news stories A few reader tips have helped land stories in the Kane County Chronicle this month.

It was because of some choice sentences said during a conversation with a source that Chronicle reporter Brenda Schory was prompted to look into the Kane County Circuit Clerk’s Office and whether there was a backlog of paperwork for DUI and other serious driving offenses not making it to the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office as required.

Turns out, a backlog does exist.

That reader tip has lead to four stories and one editorial in the Chronicle since June 18. Brenda continues to

More recently, I picked up a call from a reader wanting to know what “crazy” situation was taking place on Randall Road in Geneva.

It sounded like a traffic incident, and we sent a reporter to the scene.

That tip led to a short news item in Thursday’s paper about a two-car crash with no injuries that had tied up traffic for about 30 minutes.

Inland buys Geneva’s Randall Square center Shopping complex a buyout purchase

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Inland Real Estate bought Randall Square Shopping Center, 1460-1596 S. Randall Road, Geneva, as part of a purchase of 13 shopping centers, company officials in Oak Brook said.

Inland’s purchase was a $121 million cash buyout of a pension fund partner, the New York State Teachers’ Retirement System, for 2.3 million square feet of gross leasable space, officials said in a statement. Randall Square, which is 216,485 square feet, houses Marshall’s, Bed, Bath and Beyond, PetSmart, Michael’s, Party City and Old Navy.

The opportunity to acquire the pension fund’s interest advances the company’s strategic goals to increase the size and quality of its consolidated portfolio, simplify ownership structure and strengthen its balance sheet, Mark Zalatoris, president and chief executive officer, said in the statement.

Radco completes purchase of Covington Court Geneva-based ShoDeen sold its apartment complex Covington Court in St. Charles to an Atlanta company for $19.2 million, officials said.

Radco Companies, a real estate development and investment company, will rename the 226-unit apartment complex Ashford at St. Charles.

Radco bought another ShoDeen apartment complex, Brittany Court, 390 Brittany Court, Geneva, in February for about $27 million, Radco owner Norman Radow said.

Radow said the company owns about 4,000 apartments in Illinois, Georgia and Indiana.

McIlvaine: ‘The city hasn’t done anything right’ Resident upset over work done since judge allowed St. Charles to make repairs

CHARLES – St. Charles resident Clifford McIlvaine said Friday that the city is “destroying” his house after a judge recently allowed the city of St. Charles to proceed with repairing McIlvaine’s property at 605 Prairie St., including correcting an unfinished roof.

“The city hasn’t done anything right,” said McIlvaine, as he videotaped workers installing an asphalt shingle roof on his house. “I would have had a nice metal roof that would look a lot better than what they are putting on.”

In 1975 and 1976, the city issued him building permits for the construction of a detached garage and addition to the home. The house, which dates to the early 1920s, is his boyhood home.

Kane County Judge David Akemann in May allowed the city of St. Charles to proceed with repairing McIlvaine’s property, including correcting an unfinished roof and removing outside debris and construction materials deemed hazardous.

McIlvaine said he soon might ask the court to stop the work.

“I want the court to approve the roof we already have a permit for,” McIlvaine said. “They are totally destroying all the energy efficiency of the building.”

He wanted to install a superinsulated metal roof.

McIlvaine added that the asphalt roof being installed now is a black and gray roof, not the white roof agreed

“He picked out the colors for the roof,” Luetkehans said. “We never promised him a color. The roof we are putting up is in compliance with the city’s code. We feel very comfortable with what we are putting on.”

Luetkehans said the roof work should be done in the next week or two. He said he is pleased with the progress that has been made since

Gemma Joosse, 14, of Batavia, was a frequent customer at the restaurant before it closed. She was glad to see the restaurant open again.

“I was very sad when it was closed,” she said, after riding her bicycle to the restaurant Thursday.

The restaurant has a new owner. Ghulam Gharui purchased it in May after the previous owner got sick and had to sell the restaurant back to the Tastee-Freez corporation, said Sam Ali, the new manager of the North Aurora restaurant.

“People have been waiting for the restaurant to reopen,” Ali said. “They are excited as much as we are.”

He has worked for the chain for more than seven years, and previously managed a Tastee-Freez restaurant in Chicago.

“People come here for an experience, a good, family-friendly experience,” Ali said.

The North Aurora location of Tastee-Freez was built in 1967. The Tastee-Freez chain started in 1950 and is known for its ice cream, old-fashioned sundaes, strawberry shortcake and other items.

Ali said Tastee-Freez will be part of the village’s summer festival, North Aurora Days, in July.

“We want to be part of the community,” he said.

CHARLES – A couple reported damage to their 2006 Cadillac STC after encountering unleashed dogs – one of which was aggressive toward the couple – on a pedestrian path near Red Gate Road, according to St. Charles police reports.

On June 22, the couple had parked their vehicle in the dog park lot just north of Red Gate Road in St. Charles.

The couple told police that while walking on a pedestrian trail, they encountered a man and a woman walking five unleashed dogs.

One of the dogs reportedly jumped on the female Cadil-

lac owner and bit the pinky of the male Cadillac owner, but did not draw blood.

The couple told the woman walking the dogs that she should control her dogs, but the woman told them they “didn’t understand” because they weren’t dog owners, police reported.

When the couple returned to the parking lot, they noticed their car had been keyed.

They described the woman walking the dogs as midto late-40s with reddish hair and wearing a black tank top. The man with her was described as mid- to late-60s with white hair and a white mustache. The dogs were medium-sized mixed breeds.

AURORA – On May 14, 2013, Margie Jane Wade, 84, of Aurora, loving wife of E. Nicholas Wade and loving mother of Charles L., Jane Ann and John Mark Govern, and one whose every act was an act of love instinctively putting the needs of others before her own, was released from life support and the cares of this world to receive the blessings of the Lord awaiting her in heaven for quietly living out her Christian faith in diligent service to the needs of others.

The Holy Spirit lighted Margie’s soul and she reflected that Light to all who knew her.

Margie, born May 9, 1929, received her RN certificate with the last class of the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Chillicothe, Ohio, after completing the final two years of the course and clinical work at the St. Mary’s School of Nursing and the Mayo Clinic Hospitals in Rochester, Minn. Eager to see the world and practice her new skills, she joined the U.S. Air Force at Fairfield Sassoon Airfield (soon to become Travis AFB) where, as 1st Lt. Fink, she was instrumental in establishing the first wards for the new base hospital. Marriage to a commander at the base and three children were followed by postings and travel across the world, including French Morocco, Hawaii, Iceland, Idaho and Scott AFB in Illinois.

She followed her then-husband, Charles L. Govern II, to Batavia, where he was involved with the building of the new Fermi National

Accelerator Laboratory, and Margie entered the real estate industry, achieving great success in brokerage and sales with Baird & Warner Inc. in Geneva and the environs.

Investments in home building and title insurance followed, but when exorbitant interest rates destroyed the economy in 1979 and 1980, she returned to nursing, greatly enjoying many friendships during 15 years in intermediate and critical care at Mercy Center in Aurora before reluctantly retiring for health reasons in 1995. Throughout all the years since meeting in 1974, Margie and Nick were first business acquaintances, then business partners, then fast friends tested by the most difficult of times; since 1985, they were the closest companions and finally husband and wife, always together, now and soon forever. Burial will be in the Wade family plot in Sylvania, Ohio, near Toledo.

Margie was preceded in death by her entire immediate family: by her mother, Lala O. (nee Grant) Fink, and her father, Thomas E. Fink, both of Piketon, Ohio, and earlier of Paducah, Ky.; by her brothers, Robert Paul, Charles and Carl, and also by beloved little Frederick, who died in infancy; and by her sisters, Annetta Fink Arizona of Phoenix, Ariz., and Ann Fink Wilson and husband, Geo, of Hemet, Calif.

Margie is survived by her husband, E. Nicholas Wade and her daughter, Jane Ann Govern of Aurora; by her son and daughter-in-law, Charles L. Govern III and Margaret (nee Lynch) Govern of Burr Ridge; and by John Mark and Lois A. (nee Grist) Govern and their two daughters, Lauren Ashley Govern and Caitlin Sierra Govern of Lake Tahoe, Nev., and now Cabot, Ariz.

A glowworm can really brighten the day GOOD NATURED Pam Otto Life at Hickory Knolls is filled with many bright spots, small discoveries and tiny triumphs that make our outlook just a little bit sunnier.

Like the day last week when no one on staff – not a single person – found any ticks crawling on them.

Or like Tuesday of this past week, when we got through an entire day of nature camp, lightning and thunder and all, without anybody – kids or staff – crying.

Two weeks ago actually was our brightest spot to date.

That was when Greg Pipis, a member of our ecological restoration team, found an insect that got us positively glowing.

In fact, the insect itself was glowing. For it was, we soon discovered, a glowworm.

But this wasn’t any ordinary glowworm, no sirree.

The “usual” glowworms we run into are juveniles of the family Lampyridae, the lightning bugs or fireflies. These little larvae look a lot like streamlined pillbugs (a.k.a. roly-polies) and sowbugs, but have only six legs. Oh, and they glow, faintly, all the time.

Seen in the dark, with bioluminescent spots along its sides and glimmering bands along its back, the glowworm is pretty bright.

Greg’s glowworm was another creature entirely. At 1½ inches in length, it was bigger. And with bioluminescent spots along its sides, coupled with glimmering bands along its back, it was a whole lot brighter.

It was – actually, still is, as it’s living on my desk, for now – a member of the Phengodidae, or glowworm beetle family.

From the Greek phengodes, or “shining,” the Phengodidae consist of about 35 genera worldwide, with a large number found in Central and South America.

According to BugGuide.net, my favorite online field guide, the family has six genera with

ranges north of Mexico; these encompass 23 species across the United States and southern Canada.

Twenty-three may sound like a pretty large number, especially if insect species aren’t in your Nature Top 10. But when you consider that the U.S. is home to about 25,000 different species of beetles (28,000 if you throw in an estimate of those not yet described), you start to realize just how unusual these little guys are.

After poring over what little material is available in our reference books and online, we’re maybe 90 percent sure that Greg’s glowworm is an adult female in the genus

Glowworm beetles are members of the family Phengodidae, a name that comes from the Greek phengodes, or “shining.”

Phengodes; we’re also about 50 percent certain that the species is plumosa – a name that refers to the male beetle’s plume-like antennae.

Among glowworm beetles, only the males achieve a form we would consider to be a true adult – two eyes, three identifiable body parts and,

this glowworm, he put some leaves in with her ... and she ate them! Even now, two weeks later, she appears to be thriving on a diet of leaves from several common lawn plants – violets, plantain, clover and dandelions, to name a few.

The millipedes, which we added to her micro-ecosystem after “educating” ourselves, have gone untouched, as have the sowbugs, nematodes and myriad other creatures living in the soil into which she burrows each day.

Did Greg find a new species? Are we harming the habitat from which she came by keeping her in a cup?

We figure the answer to the first question probably is no (even though P. pipii does have a certain ring to it). And we’re hoping the same is true of the second question as well.

Besides, any day now, Greg will be taking his glowworm back to where he found her, so she can go back to doing the things she does best: eating whatever she prefers in her natural environment and attracting male Phengodidae with her radiant glow.

We’ll keep beaming too, knowing that these magnificent, and unusual, creatures are living nearby, making our days, and nights, brighter with their presence.

in this case, those incredible antennae. Females, by contrast, are referred to as larviform; that is, they look like juveniles their entire lives.

This look apparently is what male Phengodidae find eye catching; it’s also what caused Greg to take a second look. When he first saw the insect lying in the dirt, he thought it might be a larva of the dreaded emerald ash borer. But closer inspection revealed that brilliant bioluminescence.

Animals that glow typically don’t do so without a purpose.

Light can be used to lure in prey, ward off predators and to attract a mate. But among the Phengodidae, no one’s really sure what the actual function is. Some literature states that the glow plays no role in courtship, and is strictly there to warn potential predators of the beetles’ icky taste. Other references say that males are programmed to look for the glow, then use pheromones to track down individual females.

Something else the research hasn’t helped us with is diet. Everything we’ve been able to find so far states that glowworm larvae and mature females are predatory, feeding on millipedes. We even found a detailed account of how glowworm larvae use their mandibles to pierce millipedes in just the right spot; the bite evidently paralyzes the millipede and renders it unable to discharge the benzoquinones that are its only means of defense. A-mazing!

for Fourth of July KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com CAMPTON HILLS – The Campton Hills Police Department is increasing enforcement through the Fourth of July week, seeking out drunken drivers as well as motorists who fail to wear a seat belt.

The police department is joining the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Division of Traffic Safety to remind motorists to “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” and to “Click It or Ticket.”

The traffic enforcement campaign started Friday and runs through July 7.

“Year in and year out, Independence Day is one of the deadliest holidays due to an increase in drunk-driving fatalities,” Chief Dan

Hoffman said in a news release. “Too many people die each year due to those who choose to drive after drinking, so our officers will be out in full force this Fourth of July showing zero tolerance for drunk drivers and belt law violators.”

Campton Hills police reminded drivers to plan ahead by designating a sober driver before going out, and giving car keys to the designated driver. They also reminded drivers of other alternatives to getting behind the wheel while drunk, such as calling a taxi, using mass transit or calling a sober friend or family member.

Police also ask other motorists to promptly report drunken drivers on the roads by pulling over and calling 911.

editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – With the help of a state grant, St. Charles police plan to conduct traffic patrols through the Fourth of July weekend, targeting drunken drivers and those who fail to wear their seat belts.

The St. Charles Police Department received a grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program, otherwise known as a STEP grant, to conduct traffic patrols from Friday through July 7.

Police said that it only takes a second or two to buckle up, and it doesn’t cost anything.

Research has shown that proper use of lap and shoulder belts reduces the risk of a fatal injury for a frontseat passenger in a car by 45 percent, according to a news release.

Seat belts also are shown to reduce the risk of moderate to serious injury by 50 percent.

“Make sure everyone in your vehicle wears their seat belt,” the release states. “It is the best defense against a drunk driver.”

Susan Clancy Boles, a judge in the 16th Judicial Circuit, has been elected to the board of directors of the Illinois Judges Association, according to a news release issued Friday afternoon. The 16th Judicial Circuit includes Kane County.

Boles was elected at the association’s annual meeting June 7.

She has served on the Illinois Judges Association board of directors for one previous term, the release stated.

There are about 50 members of the board.

Boles has been a judge for six years, and she is a member of the Kane County Bar Association. She also speaks to high school students and parents as part of the “Seven Reasons to Leave the Party” program.

Boles is assigned to the criminal felony court at the Kane County Judicial Center, which is in St. Charles Township. She was appointed as an associate judge in 2007, and she was elected as a circuit judge in 2010.

Freedom to float More access to water, navigability for boats are keys to Fox River’s future

ulling on the oars, gliding across a glassy, mirrored surface, broken only by the ripples of his boat, David Tyler Miller often has time to just think.

And when his rowing workouts bring him to the Fox River, on the north end of St. Charles, Miller’s mind will return – at times – to the same thought.

“I’ve been rowing this stretch of river for 10 years, and, to me, it’s one of the best expanses of river for training anywhere,” said Miller, president of the St. Charles Rowing Club. “And I’ve always wondered why, in 120 years, no one’s ever started a rowing club here.”

So, last year, Miller, working with Chris Meldrum of St. Charles, launched what he believes to be the area’s first competitive rowing club.

It’s just one sign of the Fox River’s steady transformation during the past few decades from one of the most troubled waterways in the country to a regional recreational destination throughout Kane County.

Since the 1970s, a renewed emphasis on cleaning the river’s water and improving public access to the waterway has enticed locals and visitors alike back to the water’s edge.

Miler’s effort began after an inquiry from Meldrum, who was seeking an option closer to home for her teenage son who had “rowed crew” with a club in Crystal Lake in previous years.

The endeavor has grown with new recruits. And now, it’s common to see the club’s long, thin “rowing shells,” with groups of several teens pulling oars in sync, on the stretch of river from St. Charles to near South Elgin.

And in that time, Miller said he thinks he may have hit on an answer to his mus-

ings on the lack of a rowing club.

“I feel that people are still just kind of reconnecting to the river, even here, where it goes right through the towns,”

he said. “It’s only recently that the river has really become clean enough for that, I suppose.

“But citizens here are turning back to the river.”

River revitalization Much of the activity has centered on public land, particularly the Fox River Trail and land acquired and put into public recreational use by local park districts and the Kane County Forest Preserve District.

During the spring, summer and early fall months, throngs of bicyclists, hikers and others pack riverfront trails.

Bird-watchers and anglers enjoy the river virtually yearround.

And in the winter, opportunities for winter sports, such as cross-country skiing and ice skating in select locations,

continue to draw visitors to the river and its trails.

That shore-based activity has continued to feed public interest in the river as both a natural and recreational resource, said John Hoscheit, president of the Kane County Forest Preserve District.

“It really opened up the river to the public,” Hoscheit said. “It increased the ability of the public to appreciate it.”

But the river also has increasingly become a haven for water-based recreation.

And it is those kinds of activities with which the future of the river is entwined, said Hoscheit and others.

Hoscheit noted that the forest preserve district remains strongly focused on “increasing public access” to the river, particularly through the acquisition of riverfront property as it becomes

available, using tax money raised through referendums approved by county voters.

He said such actions make the riverfront ever more accessible to those wishing to try their hand at pulling from the river a walleye, smallmouth bass, crappie or muskie, among other species of game fish.

But in addition to bringing more of the river’s shores under public ownership, the forest preserve also is seeking to increase “navigability” on the Fox. To the forest preserve district, that means increasing the ability of those with human-propelled craft – such as kayaks, canoes and rowing shells – to explore from the river’s channels, rather than just its shores.

among the priorities of the Illinois Paddling Council, a group of kayakers, canoeists and others who lobby lawmakers and work with local and regional authorities to make the state’s rivers destinations for paddlers.

Tom Lindblade, past president of the IPC and current member of the group’s board, said his organization worked to establish the Fox River Water Trail, among other trails on rivers in the Chicago area.

“For us, it’s about access and finding ways to encourage people to paddle these rivers,” Lindblade said. “We are an advocate for that, everywhere.”

He noted that the IPC also supported the Illinois Department of Natural Resources’ development of the Marge Cline Whitewater Park in Yorkville.

Lindblade said such artificially-created whitewater courses would represent future opportunities to promote river-based tourism in other communities. He noted that other communities, including Algonquin and Aurora, have kicked around the idea.

Even candidates for city office in St. Charles have suggested retrofitting the river locally with such a course.

“Long term, we’d like to see ‘whitewater trails’ in some areas,” said Lindblade, noting that locally such a trail could

“People could do daylong paddles through, perhaps, three different whitewater parks,” Lindblade said. “It would be a tremendous amenity, we think.”

Moving forward Mark Miller, director of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, said the state believes increased navigation will be a key aspect of the river going forward.

However, he said, funding for river construction projects is scarce.

“We aren’t likely to see that kind of investment in things like that anytime soon,” said Miller, noting the Yorkville whitewater project cost about $10 million.

instead seek to partner with local agencies to increase more traditional forms of public access to the river, such as better canoe access, portages and enhanced dam safety.

“There seems to be a resurgence in both the health and the usage of rivers, and we want that to continue,” Miller said.

Locally, that resurgence could include an increase in clubs and outfitters dedicated to rowing sports, as kayaks, canoes, rowing shells and even stand-up paddleboards increase in number along the

Fox River in Kane County.

Brian Lewis of Batavia recently launched a kayaking tour company, The Kayakers, offering guided tours and kayaking classes on the river.

Tours have drawn visitors from the Tri-Cities, as well as Chicago, Springfield and Wisconsin.

“The Fox looks so different from the water, even along the bike path,” Lewis said.

“It’s a great opportunity, and there just aren’t any outfitters here.”

David Tyler Miller said the opportunity to see the

river from a different angle isn’t what he uses to start a conversation with potential recruits for his rowing club – but it helps.

“A lot of other rowing venues are not necessarily all that naturally attractive,” Miller said.

“But this place,” he said, gesturing to the woods that line both sides of the river north of St. Charles, “this is just picturesque.

“And when you’re out on the water, rowing, on a calm day, when the water’s still as glass, it’s a great place to be.”

Bikers travel the Fox River Trail in Geneva. Much of the public riverfront on the Fox is tied together by a network of bicycle and pedestrian trails, offering opportunities for free or low-cost recreation. There’s also community theater performances and ecological learning activities to be found for free.

s Sam Bennett sees it, there are few better ways to spend a warm, sunny day than standing – or sitting – on the side of a river, fishing rod in hand, waiting for a nibble.

For Bennett, of unincorporated St. Charles Township, who writes for and operates the blog FoxRiverFishing.com, that enjoyment increases when the river full of fish essentially flows right past his home.

“I was able to take my 6-year-old down to Geneva the

other day, just down the road,” Bennett said.

“I handed her a pole and said, ‘Here, move your pole back and forth, like this,’ ” he said, demonstrating the technique as he awaited a bite.

“If she can do it, in this river, anyone can do it.”

While Bennett’s preferred choice of recreation may not entice everyone, the Fox River abounds with a range of other playtime choices.

Those activities have given rise to a number of businesses in the region catering to those

Coroner shows proper respect for unclaimed cremains Rob Russell didn’t have to do a thing when he encountered dozens of cremated remains – also known as cremains – stacked in containers and sitting among other items in a storage area at the Kane County Coroner’s Office. But when Russell ran for the coroner position last year, he said restoring integrity to an office previously marked by controversy would be a priority. Chuck West, the previous coroner, had been charged with official misconduct.

The decency shown in last week’s ceremony was a step in the right direction. The abandoned cremains of 41 people left on a shelf in the coroner’s office were given a proper burial at North Cemetery mausoleum in St. Charles. Also, the ceremony included cremains left at the cemetery and at Yurs Funeral Home, making a total of 161 cremains given a final resting place.

Russell, who won election to the office in November, has said he found the cremains on a

shelf when he took office.

Some had been there for more than 20 years. The cremains sat on a shelf, in a room that included furniture, shovels, holiday decorations and a box labeled as “reaper of old souls.”

“The day I walked in here, I could not believe there were human remains next to files,” Russell said in March.

Russell publicly identified the names of those whose cremains were stored there, and he said six cremains were claimed. And while Russell might not have liked the cremains being stored in the office, he didn’t have to make a public plea for next of kin to claim the cremains. He didn’t have to arrange for a ceremony and a memorial service to properly inter those cremains.

“Respect goes to everybody,” Russell said at last week’s ceremony.

“Today, we right what was wrong.”

He didn’t have to say anything at all. But he did. And he did the right thing.

A sad day for democracy, for marriage

It was outrageous for the Supreme Court to invalidate Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act and allow the potential invalidation of California’s Proposition 8, a law passed with the support of more than 7 million voters. Although Wednesday was a sad day for democracy and for marriage, this is not the end of the battle.

The vast majority of states recognize marriage solely as the union of one man and one woman. Only 13 states and the District of Columbia recognize same-sex “marriage,” and nothing the Supreme Court just did changes that fact. If anything,

the court’s opinion in United States v. Windsor, the DOMA case, shows that the federal government must respect the decision of states to define marriage as they choose.

The National Organization for Marriage intends to vigorously urge Congress to safeguard the remaining portion of DOMA, which protects the right of states to refuse to recognize same-sex “marriages” performed elsewhere.

It should also be noted that Proposition 8 has not been invalidated, as many in the media have erroneously reported. The case was dealt with on a narrow procedural basis; the appellate court decision was vacated, and it now goes back to the trial

court to decide what will happen with the law.

It’s the view of many Americans that Proposition 8 remains the law of the land in California unless a higher court invalidates it at some point in the future.

That said, Wednesday’s procedural ruling is an illegitimate decision. California’s governor and attorney general, ignoring their oaths of office and duty to uphold the law, refused to defend Proposition 8 because they opposed the law, and the Supreme Court rewarded their dereliction of duty.

Geneva prides itself on being a caring community. Every time I see the picture of the adorable dog that was hit [near] the CVS in Geneva, it brings tears to my eyes. Where are the owners?

Nobody has missed this poor animal. Every night, I pray that it will find a deserving home that will appreciate it.

In the newspaper, the guy who lives on Prairie in St. Charles, he’s getting a new roof. Now, he has to decide the color of his roof. How much time does he have? Since 1975, he’s been working on his house.

And $27,000 for a roof, in St. Charles? You can get lower.

That is so expensive. And if this guy’s been working on his property since 1975, where is he going to come up with that kind of money?

Support the Constitution Another ignorant complaint about guns recently appeared in the Sound Off column. Let me enlighten the complainant. The

shootings in Chicago are done by people who illegally possess firearms. Please don’t ask that guns be taken by people properly documented. The public is strongly supporting a high school teacher for teaching his students about the Constitution and their right to not incriminate themselves. I would like to ask the caller to also support the Constitution and my right to bear arms.

Learn the facts about guns This is for the person who called in about the guns. I’ll read you the Second Amendment, “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” Fact: Chicago has the toughest gun laws in America. Fact: The South Side gangs do most of the shooting. Fact: They are from homes without fathers present in their lives. Fact: Guns do not kill people; people do.

Fact: We took morality out of schools in 1962. Fact: Learn more about the facts before you call in. You need to educate yourself, and that is a fact.

This message is in regard to the Batavia High School survey given to the students. If it is important to find out what students might be at risk of detrimental behavior, then it has to be extremely important to find the same information about the district staff. I propose that no staff employee or board member be allowed to return to work at the district unless they fill out the same survey, while attached to a lie-detector machine, and have the results provided to their employers and constituents: the district’s taxpayers. We will only use this information to assist us in identifying individuals in need of help. No one else will see the information. We promise. I think we’d be amazed at how quickly the administration would change their tune about the U.S. Constitution and how it applies to this survey. They might even give Mr. Dryden an extra day’s pay to help document their challenge. I’m sure all of their objections will melt away when they are reminded of the magic slogan that they always use to get unnecessary tax hikes approved – it’s for the kids.

Work to undo Citizens United continues

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com A citizens’ movement to undo an unpopular U.S. Supreme Court 2010 ruling, Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commission, has gained some steam, following a successful advisory referendum, organizers say.

Local members of Move to Amend collected more than 14,000 signatures to get the question on the Kane County ballot last fall, asking whether the U.S. Constitution should be amended again – that is, “to limit the use of corporate, special interest and private money in any political activity, including influencing the election of any candidate for public office.”

In the Citizens United case, the high court ruled, 5-4, that the First Amendment prohibited the government from restricting independent political expenditures by corporations and unions.

According to Kane County referendum results records, the advisory question passed, 101,146 to 36,608. An advisory referendum is not binding, but allows voters to voice opinions on government.

The next effort was to get a joint resolution passed in Springfield – which also passed, 80 to 36, with two voting present. Illinois is the 14th state to pass such a measure.

the Bill of Rights and other amendments “are intended to protect the rights of individual human beings [as] ‘natural persons.’” It quotes Justice John Paul Stevens from a 2000 decision, “Money is property; it is not speech.”

Sens. Jon Tester, D-Montana, and Tom Udall, D-New Mexico, proposed constitutional amendments to end the personhood of corporations.

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, was a co-sponsor of a proposal in the last Congress, and is looking at the current

ones, a spokesman said.

Robert Trent of Elburn, who with his wife, Ulla, signed the Kane petition, said he is hopeful an amendment will occur.

“Big business has too much influence on our federal government and our lawmakers,” Trent said. “I know the vast majority of them [politicians] rely on contributions from large companies.”

But Robert Haase of St. Charles said he would disagree – unless the influence of unions also was covered by the undoing of the Citizens United ruling.

“If it stops union money, then I’ll stand with it,” Haase said. “Somehow, I don’t believe that will happen. Union money will funnel its way into the system.”

State Sen. Karen McConnaughay, R-St. Charles, was the chief co-sponsor of the joint resolution. She could not be reached for comment.

Those who voted no include State Rep. Tim Schmitz, R-Batavia, State Rep. Kay Hatcher, R-Yorkville, and State Rep. and Minority Leader Tom Cross, R-Oswego. None of them could be reached for comment.

To the south, the trail will bring visitors to Mt. St. Mary Park, which also offers a skate park and the award-winning Sculpture in the Park public art exhibit.

“The river is such a natural draw,” Cabel said. “But we have a lot along the riverside to enhance that experience.”

Similar networks of parks and public sites also are linked by the trail in Geneva, Batavia and North Aurora, among others.

Cultural activities also have sprung up locally along the Fox, due to its blend of natural beauty and historical downtowns. Throughout the summer, festivals – includ-

ing St. Charles Riverfest, Geneva’s Swedish Days and Batavia’s Windmill City Fest – draw visitors to each community’s downtown riverfront.

Other events get even closer to the river. The Fox Valley Folk Music & Storytelling Festival, for instance, is held on Geneva’s Island Park in September.

And in Batavia, the river serves as part of the playhouse, as the Shakespeare on Clark players turn Clark Island into an outdoor theater for two to three weeks each summer. This year’s free productions will run from July 26 to Aug. 11, with nightly performances Thursday through

Sunday each week.

However, the river’s main draw continues to be its abundance of nature-based activities and the opportunity to connect with nature, close to home. Ecological education opportunities can be found at the Fox Valley Park District’s Red Oak Nature Center along the Fox River Trail near North Aurora.

And less-traveled side trails branching off the main river trail can bring those on bicycles or on foot to places that can offer at least an illusion of solitude for a quiet lunch or moment of peace, all of which costs only the time needed to get there.

with a desire to play and relax along the river. Some partake in a number of pastimes – including boat rentals, charter paddleboat trips and dining on restaurant patios adjoining the river – that cost money.

But the river offers an array of recreational possibilities for those looking to spend less. Many of those options center on the large number of parks and public lands, owned and maintained by local park districts and the Kane County Forest Preserve District, lining the Fox. Much of that public riverfront is tied together by a network of bicycle and pedestrian trails. And those trails, in turn, offer some of the best opportunities for free or lowcost recreation anywhere in the region.

“Any day the weather’s good, you can go up and down the Fox River Trail and see hundreds of people using the facilities at any point,” said John Hoscheit, president of the Kane County Forest Pre-

serve District.

In St. Charles, for instance, the trail links together many of that community’s most popular parks, which, in turn, offers numerous choices for play, said Holly Cabel, director of recreation for the St. Charles Park District. She noted that Ferson Creek Park lures anglers, while Boy Scout Island offers a boat launch.

At Pottawatomie Park, visitors can picnic or stroll through the park into downtown. And on the upcoming Independence Day holiday, visitors can take in free concerts in the park’s amphitheater, followed by a traditional fireworks display.

COMEBACK UNFOLDING North’s Johansmeier perseveres in accident’s aftermath

P

rogress has come too slowly for Luke Johansmeier’s liking the past several months, so simply stepping foot on the baseball diamond qualifies as a hopeful sign.

“Just getting back into it, getting used to everything,” Johansmeier said.

“I’ve played baseball every day for a few weeks now, so it’s maybe getting a little better.”

Johansmeier, who will be a junior at St. Charles North in the fall, missed his entire sophomore baseball season after suffering a broken collarbone in a Jan. 31 car accident. The early stages of his comeback are unfolding as Johansmeier competes with the St. Charles Post 342 legion team and with North’s summer team.

One of the younger members of the legion team, the diminutive Johansmeier is seeing time at second base and designated hitter, although his right, throwing arm remains far from full strength.

Post 342 coach Dale Wilderspin acknowledges Johansmeier’s physical limitations – even at second base, he’s unable to play both games of a doubleheader – but Wilderspin still considers Johansmeier an impressive competitor in the mold of his older brother, Jake Johansmeier, who is playing collegiately at Eastern Illinois.

“He’s a battler at the plate,” Wilderspin said.

“He very seldom gets overwhelmed at the plate. He’ll put the ball in play, and he’s come up with some big hits when you think he’s going to get overwhelmed.”

Johansmeier’s collarbone broke because of the force of his seat belt’s reaction to the accident. He knows the outcome of the accident could have been much worse, and

He hoped to at least salvage a slice of his sophomore year but wasn’t cleared to play until just after the North Stars had been eliminated from the postsea-

son.

Grateful as he is to now be able to play ball, additional patience will be required until he feels like his old self.

“My arm, it hurts when I throw,” Johansmeier said.

“Because the collarbone is shorter and it pops out whenever I throw. ... It takes a few months for it to get back to what it was.”

Until he’s able to throw the way he’s accustomed, Johansmeier is putting higher expectations on himself to thrive in other areas.

The elder Albert Almora, however, spent the early years of his adult life under Castro’s

rule. A mechanical draftsman, he was able to leave Cuba during the economic downturn in that country during the early 1980s that sparked the Mariel boatlift. He was allowed to emigrate first to Spain, where he worked for several years before coming to the United States.

“We met in ’92 and Albert was born in ’94,” Ana said. “He

changed our lives. We knew he was special since he was a little kid.”

The younger Albert Almora said his father played baseball growing up in Cuba and passed down his love of the game to his only son.

“It was like God gave him a gift because he had three daughters [from a previous marriage],” Almora said. “I was the only boy. All my life he’s been there and pushed me. … He’s the reason why I’m

GENEVA – The Kane County Cougars are off to a dismal 1-7 start to the second half of the Midwest League season and not even the presence of star outfielder Albert Almora’s parents this week could bring them enough luck to avoid dropping a series with Beloit.

The Snappers (6-1) shut out the Cougars, 2-0, Friday at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark to take three of the four games in the series. Almora, who came into the contest hitting a sizzling .366, was 0-for-4 at the plate, but he was hardly the only Cougar to struggle against Beloit right-hander Dakota Bacus (7-2). Bacus allowed only three hits, all singles, in eight innings of work.

“He was just throwing strikes and making it difficult for us to be in a hitter’s count and get a good pitch to drive,” said Almora, the Cubs’ firstround draft pick in 2012, who was born Reinaldo Albert Almora in 1994.

Almora’s parents were making their first trip to Kane County from their home in Florida. His father, Albert Almora, does not speak English, but his mother, Ana Almora, said they were enjoying their stay.

“The area’s so nice,” she said. “The park is beautiful and the fans – a lot of people come to support them. [Our son] loves it. He’s not used to all the fans because down in Arizona in rookie ball, you don’t get them. In Boise, there were fans, but not like this.”

A switch-hitter Encarnacion was hitting .298 in 13 games this season at Boise. Last season with the Cubs’ Dominican team, he batted .308 with 5 home runs and 31 RBI. ... After the game, the Cougars announced another roster move as relief pitcher Jeffrey Antigua was promoted to Double-A Tennessee.

Tri-Cities girls volleyball teams net AAU crowns For now, Fusion South director Mike Bui is loving what he’s seeing on the volleyball court from Grace Loberg and Ally Barrett.

The towering tandem – both taller than 6 feet, and likely still growing – helped propel Fusion South’s 14 Red team to an AAU national championship this week in Orlando, Fla. Barrett and Loberg are incoming freshmen outside hitters at Geneva High School, meaning at some point, Bui – an assistant coach at St. Charles East – will be on the other side of the net from who he predicts will be “two of the best players to walk out of the Tri-Cities in a very long time.”

“They’re going to be tough to beat down the road,” Bui said. “There’s a lot of talent at that school right now.”

The 14 Red team was one of two teams out of Fusion South in Batavia that were crowned AAU national champions in Florida. The other was Fusion South’s 18 Silver squad,

and both teams had a trio of players that were designated All-Americans.

Loberg was named MVP of her division, and was joined

by Barrett and incoming St. Francis freshman libero Katie Koehler as All-Americans.

“I can only imagine what they’re going to look like in about a year or two,” Bui said of Loberg and Barrett.

While the 14 Red team was undefeated on the week, Fusion South’s 18 Silver team “peaked at the right time,” Bui said, and avenged a pair of bracket losses to claim its division championship.

Geneva product Hannah Buck and Rosary product Kate Stefanski were two of the team’s three All-American designees.

“We knew they had a chance,” Bui said. “That’s a team that’s loaded with a lot of kids from the Tri-Cities …

We knew if they were going to click at the right time, they could play some good volleyball, and they did.”

New Wheaton Academy interim football coach Brad Thornton grew up in the Chicago area and thought he’d be returning from a stint coaching in Tennessee to be an assistant football coach and English teacher at Wheaton Academy. But when administrators couldn’t find a new head coach with sufficient experience in time for this season, the school turned to the 28-year-old Thornton as interim coach.

In this week’s Weekend Chitchat with Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab, the CaryGrove graduate touches base on being an interim coach, ramping up the football culture at Wheaton Academy and the Warriors’ move in 2014-15 from the Suburban Christian Conference to the Metro Suburban. The following is an edited transcript:

we are really encouraged by is the guys who are there are excited to be there, want to be there and are ready and willing to do the work. … I guess as a coach, there’s not much more you can ask for than that.

What are your first impressions of your new team?

I’ve been excited about the energy and the [enthusiasm] that we’ve had out at the workouts and the few practices that we’ve done. We were talking as a coaching staff [Friday] and one of the things

What is the most important thing you have found out about the team so far? Has something jumped out at you?

I’m getting a feel for the talent level of the team, the strengths of the team. It’s pretty apparent we have good size up front on the offensive and defensive line and several returning starters on the O and D lines, so that’s popped out at me. That’s a good thing, that’s a strength of the team. We’re going to try and leverage that to our advantage and behind that, we have several skill players returning from last year that will be solid contributors as well.

What kind of base offense and defense are you anticipating running?

We’re going to run a Jet offense or just try to run a lot off Jet motion and Jet sweeps, and then defensively we’re going to run a base 4-3

Fusion South has only been in operation for two years.

Club Fusion’s flagship location remains Marengo, but club leaders wanted to launch the Batavia facility to make it more convenient for younger players in the Tri-Cities to give Fusion a shot at an earlier age.

A few of the Tri-Cities’ elite players still compete out of Marengo, including rising St. Charles North senior Taylor Krage, who also won an AAU national title in Orlando this week at the highest level – the open division with Fusion 17 Black.

That team’s title came Tuesday and was streamed online via ESPN3.

“Taylor had to step in as full-time starting right side on that team while Brianna Stewart moved into the middle

to fill the role of [an injured middle blocker], and Taylor had an outstanding tournament starting full-time,” said Eric Schulze, Club Fusion’s general manager. “She had been kind of sharing time as they were tuning up and using different lineups going into the tournament, but Taylor ended up playing every set of every match at nationals, and was a key component to their success.”

Krage, a Northern Illinois recruit, and her 17 Black teammates flew straight from rainy Orlando to Dallas, where they will begin play today in the USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championships. Schulze said “they’re chasing what would basically be a historic, double national championship.”

Bui is gratified that Fusion South already is producing such accomplished teams, and the success has caught the attention of Schulze, who oversees the entire program.

“We were excited but cer-

tainly not expecting the numbers that came in these first two years across the board,” Schulze said. “To see our 14 Red team win a club national championship is exactly how we envisioned this working out, to really get these kids started at a young age and get them acclimated to a national level of volleyball.

“And even the 18 Silver Championship is exactly what we need. That group of kids came from an area that wouldn’t make that kind of drive to Marengo to play in our national level but still had an opportunity to play at a very good level of volleyball and compete at a national level as well. We couldn’t be more thrilled with the job going on down there and the job Mike Bui is doing in that area that he takes so much pride in.”

defense. It’s pretty vanilla right now, but the thing I like about the 4-3 is you can get a lot of variations off it and can adjust the gameplan to what the offense is doing against you.

How is participation looking from a numbers standpoint?

From a numbers standpoint, we’re trying to get more guys out so numbers are OK, they could be better, but … we’re encouraged by what we have out there and the attitudes of the guys, being willing to work. But the culture of Wheaton Academy, we’re working on building a football culture there, I’ll just

That interim tag is a unique setup. Do you have aspirations of being head coach, long term?

Long term, yeah, I’d love to be a head coach without the interim tag, so this is a great experience. It was something proposed to me about a month ago given the school was looking to hire a head coach who had head coaching experience, which I didn’t have. They went through a long search, didn’t quite find the right fit, but given the staff coming in and the supporting cast around me, the school felt comfortable tagging me as interim coach for the time being and probably opening the search at the end of the season, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.

For now, the team is mine to run, and I’ve enjoyed doing it.

A lot of teams heading to the Metro Suburban have had trouble competing in the SCC, but that’s still the situation for now. What are your thoughts on the conference dynamics?

The last several months there has been a lot of discussion about [the amount of hitting in practice] and the new heat acclimatization policy the IHSA is phasing in. Where do you stand on those issues?

With hitting, that all starts with teaching the fundamentals of tackling. … The heat acclimatization is something that wasn’t around when I was a player here 10 years ago, so I’m getting adjusted to finding out how to do it in August. … The first day we can have five hours of practice is also the first day of school for Wheaton Academy so that presents some challenges as far as scheduling those practices.

Chris Wido admittedly filled a bit role for the St. Charles North baseball program during a career that ended with his graduation in 2012.

He hopes a recent honor has him on his way to something more.

Wido last month received Morton College’s Chico Carrasquel Scholarship, a result, he said, of being the top freshman on the Cicero-based team while excelling academically and as an off-field leader.

“I was very humbled,” Wido said. “We had a few very good freshman on the team this year, so originally it was not something I would think I was able to win.”

Usually the Panthers’ cleanup hitter, Wido batted .277 with four home runs and 14 RBIs in 30 games. His seven multihit games included

games.

“There were times when It got a little tiring,” he said, “but when you go out there and you pretty much know you’ll be catching every day, you get in the right mental state of mind.”

That wasn’t the case at North, where Wido played alongside a group of solid recent catchers that included Ryan Thomas.

Wido is playing for St. Charles American Legion Post 342 this summer and hopes another strong showing with Morton next season can boost him to a bigger school.

“I am really thankful for the junior college experience.

It definitely is a good place to get your name out there, get your playing time in,” Wido said. “For someone who didn’t get that much playing time in high school, it was nice to play and show what I could do.”

As chaotic and celebratory as the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Stanley Cup celebration had been three years ago when the Hawks captured their first championship in 49 years, Fridayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s parade through Chicagoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s streets and the rally that followed played out more like an expected crowning achievement.

Fans, who had packed onto El trains and then had filled both sides of Washington Street, relished the scene under sunny skies as the Hawks celebrated their second Stanley Cup title in four seasons.

And somewhere between Jim Cornelisonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s trademark rendition of the national anthem and Corey Crawfordâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s profanity-laced speech, Chicagoans showed they still love a party.

More than a million fans filled Grant Park, commemorating a Stanley Cup championship clinched Monday on Dave Bollandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s third-period goal that closed out a 17-second stretch of a Game 6 win over the Boston Bruins. Four days later, fans and players alike were still soaking in the championship moment. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think of a better team, a better bunch of guys to represent this city,â&#x20AC;? said Hawks captain Jonathan Toews, who hoisted the Stanley Cup over his head on his way to the lectern during Fridayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rally. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hard-working guys, down-to-earth guys who go out and play for each other every single shift â&#x20AC;&#x201C; [they] represent this city and what it means.â&#x20AC;?

Several of his colleagues did not heed his advice this time around as they crossed the street to do business at City Hall.

“They went over to do some early work this morn-

ing, and now they’re stranded over there,” Dalton said.

“That happened to me the last time, so I knew.

“I told them, ‘You’re going to get stranded.’ And they went anyway.”

And they got stranded.

Matt Heinlich almost got stranded, but he relied on an underground passage to get from the Richard J. Daley Center to his law office at 30 North LaSalle. Hours earlier, his train ride on the way to work was unlike any other in his professional life.

Heinlich wore a suit and tie. No, his suit jacket did not have “Toews – 19” stitched on the back.

“I was sticking out like a sore thumb,” said Heinlich, 29, of Geneva.

But Heinlich is a Hawks fan, so he understood. He planned to sneak a peek from his bosses’ corner office as players paraded down Washington 21 floors below.

Dalton understood, too: “It’s good to see a team from Chicago do something.”

Achim also embraced the craziness going past the front steps of the Art Institute.

She’s from Cluj-Napoca.

Have you heard of it? It’s in the center of Transylvania.

“We like sports,” Achim said. “It’s not that we don’t like sports.

“But it’s crazy how people celebrate the victory. We celebrate it, too, but not like this: The whole city. Everyone dressed up.

“We usually celebrate after the game – one hour, or two, or the whole night. It depends how important the victory is.”

This victory was pretty important.

Even Wakeland realized that, even if the parade left her with more questions than answers.

“It made me wonder, how many of these people are supposed to be at work?”

Wakeland said. “Is this like the 1-point-whatever million that are unemployed? I don’t know. I don’t know who these people are.

“At the same time, I think we all deserve a break and we all deserve a little fun. I’m sure if there are drinks later on, I’ll partake.”

CHICAGO – Like millions of others in this happy, sunsoaked city, Ramona Achim looked forward to going downtown Friday and being part of something great.

“We had to come here,” said Achim, a tourist from Romania. “We wanted to come here.”

How could you blame her? All of the stars were on display.

Picasso. Van Gogh. Monet.

Renoir. Degas. Just to name a few.

Wait, you thought she was talking about the Blackhawks parade?

Not so much.

As millions of delirious Hawks fans lined parade routes, marched through downtown streets and packed Grant Park for a raucous celebration of the team’s Stanley Cup championship, a small group of people stuck to their daily routines.

Except nothing was routine about Friday.

Confetti fell from windows high above Washington Street.

Joyous fans clapped and screamed and snapped pictures as Hawks players waved from the tops of trolleys.

Victory noise was everywhere.

Air horns, sirens, “Chelsea Dagger,” you name it.

A few doors from the parade route, Chicago resident Laura Wakeland tried to focus on her job at Harlan J. Berk Rare Coins.

Friendly and funny, she admitted to not being able to name a Hawks player and not watching a game during the playoffs.

“I have no idea what a Stanley Cup is,” Wakeland said, “but good for them.”

And good for Wakeland for navigating the massive crowds to make it to work.

“When I was walking down here from the train, I had to fight people just to get to work,” Wakeland said with a grin. “And I was just like, ‘People, let me get to work already! You have all day to party.’ ”

Sibling love Children make memories; mom gets breakfast in bed Sometimes I wonder if my kids even like each other. But then, out of the blue, I spot them playing soccer, together. In the house.

“Whoa,” their dad says.

“Hey, at least they’re playing together and not bickering. It’s all good,” I suggest, laughing, whilst mentally calculating the cost of a new window – just in case it’s not.

I recall a time several years ago when friends lamented the sibling rivalry raging in their homes. I admit I quietly marveled that my children somehow got along, even seemed to enjoy each other’s company. It started early, with Noah putting his own blanket into baby Holly’s crib before she was even born, and a few months later, when he sang “Puff the magic dragon” to her when he thought no one else was looking. I won’t exaggerate – nobody’s flinging sharp objects at anyone else, now – but yeah, those were the days.

At 12 and 14, my kids can go for days with nary a glance in the other’s direction.

When they do communicate, shrugs and grunts aren’t uncommon.

One morning a couple of weeks ago, however, before I even got out of bed, I overheard my son teaching his little sister and her buddy how to make waffles from scratch.

I had the impulse to run downstairs and lavish them with praise, but that would have required getting out of bed.

Besides, I didn’t want my presence to pierce a sweet, fleeting moment.

So, I listened from a distance, instead, to the lilting, soothing sound of an encouraging voice and the sweet, higher ones murmuring their queries and replies. I couldn’t hear every word, but knew that something nice was happening – something that I, myself, had no hand in initiating. It’s a moment I’ll treasure, always.

I steered clear of the kitchen, remained in my cozy cocoon, and decided I’d quietly join them when the waffles were ready.

Occasionally, in my house, someone will kick the soccer ball a little too hard or wrestle a little too roughly, and someone else will yell “Stop!” or “Mom!” Should I play cop and intervene, I wonder?

Mostly, whatever the conflict, I remind them that they’re equipped to peacefully resolve things on their own – and usually they do. But other times, things go sour and I’m left scratching my head and wondering, “What just happened here?”

Like when someone’s “Stop!” is followed with laughter, and that person’s apparent effort to keep things light while still getting her point across sends a mixed message and the point gets lost. Once I realized this was happening, a brief conversation ensued. Though it might be confusing, I said, no matter what, “Stop” means “stop” – and “No” means “no” – even if there’s laughter involved.

I deliberately kept it short – and light.

But, mindful of the implications, I hoped valuable seeds were sown that would bloom when they were needed. For both of them.

Relieved of my reverie as the scent of home-made waffles wafted up the stairs, I wondered how they’d taste. My wondering didn’t last long, however, as my dear daughter soon appeared at my bedside with the fruits of their labor. Breakfast in bed. Sweet!

Planting the perfect perennial If you ask a gardener, “What is the perfect perennial?” chances are you will get as many different answers as there are gardeners.

Ask instead, “What criteria determines a perfect perennial?” and you might get the same answer from all of them.

A plant that requires little maintenance, is disease resistant, thrives in all types of soil, blooms reliably, has many cultivars from which to choose color and flower form.

These criteria can be used to describe any number of plants, but they are especially applicable to the daylily – Hemerocallis.

Daylilies are native to Asia where they were cultivated for food and medicine.

In the 1700s, they were brought to Europe as an ornamental plant and given the genus name Hemerocallis, meaning “day” and “beauty,” referencing the fact that a single bloom lasts for only one day.

Since the early 1900s the number of daylily varieties has grown from four to more than 74,000.

The modern cultivars offer such a wide variety of bloom times, flower forms and colors we can enjoy them throughout the summer even though the beauty of a single bloom is so short-lived.

It’s hard to believe that one of the forbearers of all those cultivars is the orange daylily often seen growing wild along roadsides. Hem-

LEARNING TO GROW Suzanne Thorne erocallis fulva, commonly known as Ditch Lily or Tawny Daylily, has large orange-red flowers with wavy margins and a center stripe of paler orange down the middle of each petal.

The flowers are borne on 6-inch scapes above bright green leaves. It is infertile and does not set seed, but spreads by rhizome.

If left unattended, it can form large clumps and displace native habitat over time, which is why it is on the invasive species list in many states, including Illinois.

The ability to

produce runners away from the mother fan differentiates H. fulva from non-invasive, clump-forming hybrid daylily cultivars in which this characteristic is usually bred out.

While I still appreciate the beauty of H. fulva in my garden, I am slowly replacing it with more desirable varieties such as Summer Wine and Chicago Fire.

Whether old-fashioned variety or modern cultivar, I consider the daylily the perfect perennial.

NeXt Gallery to celebrate Ekwabet’s 25th birthday KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Arts Council will present “The Making of Ekwabet” at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 30, as part of the neXt Gallery’s celebration of the statue’s 25th birthday.

The pop-up gallery’s current location is at 228 W. Main St. in St. Charles.

“The Making of Ekwabet” will feature the statue’s sculptor, Guy J. Bellaver, who will share the story of how the iconic sculpture of a Potawatomi Indian “returned” to St. Charles.

“I met Bill Berg of the St. Charles Rotary Club just a few weeks after my family moved to St. Charles in 1985,” Bellaver said in a news release. “Bill had thought for quite some time that St. Charles needed a commemorative sculpture of a Potawatomi Indian to ‘return’ to St. Charles – and he immediately decided that we [he and the Rotary Club] needed to make this happen. ... It’s a treat to celebrate [Ekwabet’s] ‘birthday’ and I’m delighted to have the opportunity to make this presentation about a project that, in 1985, many people thought would be very tough to make happen in our small, blue collar town.”

Ekwabet – meaning “Watching Over” – was dedicated in 1988 and given his Potawatomi name by Billy Daniels of the Forest County Potawatomi Tribe in a naming ceremony in 1989, according to the release.

The event also will feature multiple rooms filled with sculptures, paintings, photography and ceramics – all of which are for sale.

‘Unfinished Song:’ Features a talented duo

The Washington Post Paul Andrew Williams, the British writer-director of “Unfinished Song,” uses every cheap trick at his disposal to elicit emotions from the audience, including cancer, a strained father-son relationship and a choir serenading a dying woman with “You Are the Sunshine of My Life” while standing in the rain. How dare he.

And yet, these unmistakable manipulations are difficult to see through all the tears. Thank the two leads, Terence Stamp and Vanessa Redgrave, for that.

The formidably talented duo inject so much humanity into their characters that all of the other overly sentimental elements – even the title sounds like it belongs on the Hallmark Channel – seem utterly reasonable.

Stamp plays Arthur, a salty bloke who has little patience for anything except his wife and granddaughter.

He assumes the worst from people, especially his son, James (Christopher Eccleston). Arthur appears to ask James for favors with the express purpose of lecturing the divorced dad over what the old spitfire will certainly deem mediocre results. Yet when it comes to his

dying wife, Marion (Redgrave), Arthur is loving, if not overly demonstrative.

They have a playful rapport that feels natural.

The importance of the pair’s chemistry can’t be overstated. If Arthur was an angry, one-note Scrooge, it would be impossible to care about his fate. Even with the tiniest of gestures, Stamp never misses an opportunity to show that Arthur is capable of love, which makes him sympathetic even when he’s at his worst (which is a lot).

Marion’s participation in a choir, led by kindly young do-gooder Elizabeth (Gemma Arterton), is a source of disagreement for the longtime couple.

Arthur bristles when the group of elderly chanteuses enters a competition; he assumes the whole lot of them is about to be humiliated. But embarrassment is the least of Marion’s concerns. She just wants to have a bit of fun while she still

can.

It wouldn’t be right to give away much more of the plot, except to say that at some point Arthur has to make decisions that involve either continuing to push people away, as he has always done, or gamble on wholeheartedly embracing relationships.

In one scene, the camera shows Arthur and James on either side of a wall in Arthur’s house. James is giggling with his young daughter in the kitchen, and Arthur begins to walk toward them, but something stops the man in his tracks. It is an understated and tragic moment.

Somehow, these small moments manage to compensate for the movie’s flaws.

Some of the low points include song selection for the upcoming competition (Salt-N-Pepa’s “Let’s Talk About Sex”), the lack of memorable characters within the choir, Elizabeth’s unnecessary sporadic narration and one scene when the elderly singers try to learn to dance the robot for no apparent reason except cheap laughs.

But these missteps don’t diminish the strength of the film and the importance of its messages. It’s worth a watch, if just for Stamp’s complex performance.

Just don’t forget to bring some tissues.

Your parents can minimize the importance of your relationship only if you allow them to. Granted, you are a late bloomer – but you are also an adult. The longer you keep this a secret, the harder it will be for you to open up.

One way to introduce the subject would be to start saying “we” when you talk about where you’re going and what you’re doing. If they ask who the “we” is, you can then tell them you met a man named “John” a short while ago, that he seems nice, that you are

seeing him, etc. Be prepared for questions and don’t be defensive.

They should be overjoyed at the news you are dating.

Dear Abby: I’m 13 and read your column every day. My parents fight a lot. When they fight, I try to get in between them and keep it down. It’s not very effective, though. I don’t want their fighting to leak out. Therapy doesn’t seem possible.

Do you have some tips to keep them from fighting with each other? – The Referee Dear Referee: Parents fight for many reasons, none of them having to do with you. The problems could be lack of money, job stress or something in their relationship with each other that isn’t working.

If it were possible for you to fix their marriage, I would advise you how to do it, but the only people who can do that are your parents themselves – if they are willing. If their fighting escalates to violence, rather than put yourself in the middle, you should call the police.

Berries are little powerhouses of nutrition Dear Doctor K: Berry season is here again, and I keep hearing that berries are healthy. What’s in them that makes them so good for you?

Dear Reader: Here in the Northeast, we’re enjoying strawberries and looking forward to raspberries, blueberries and even blackberries further down the road.

Berries are perhaps the easiest way to follow the fruit part of the “eat more fruit and vegetables” advice you hear all the time, including from me. Berries naturally come in bite-sized portions.

They’re sweet but have a nice low calorie count, partly because they contain a lot of water. If you don’t need to watch your calories – yes, there are people who are born thin – you can “pig out” on them.

(Just don’t sprinkle much sugar on them.)

Berries contain vitamins (C and a little bit of E, because of the seeds) and some lesser-known nutrients. But they also, somewhat surprisingly, contain a fair amount of fiber. A cup of raspberries contains 8 grams of fiber, which is more fiber than you’ll find in a serving of oatmeal.

But what makes berries stand out nutritionally (and visually)

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff are substances called anthocyanins. These substances give berries their vivid red, blue and purplish colors. Anthocyanins are antioxidants, which keep oxygen ions and other unstable molecules from damaging DNA, messing with cells’ energy-making machinery, stirring up inflammation in the body and having a variety of other harmful effects.

Vitamin supplements with antioxidants in them have generally not been proven to benefit your health as many had hoped.

However, there’s still a lot of evidence that antioxidants are good for you, and foods that naturally contain antioxidants are thought to promote better health.

Anthocyanins are concentrated in the skin of berries (as well as other fruits). In general, the more intense the color, the higher the anthocyanin content.

So, blueberries and blackberries usually contain more anthocyanins than strawberries or raspberries. And wild berries

have more antioxidants than their larger, paler, domesticated relations. Raspberries also contain a substance called ellagitannin, which imparts flavor and has antioxidant properties that add to the effects of anthocyanins.

Be sure to wash your berries right before eating them. Berries can harbor viruses, bacteria and other pathogens that cause foodborne illnesses.

For me, the best way to start a day is with a bowl of fresh, delicious berries. In fact, that’s what I had for breakfast today – with toast and coffee.

I have a patient who is very knowledgeable about food and reportedly a good cook. She once chastised me for writing about how healthy certain foods were.

“The point you should be emphasizing is that they are delicious, because they are. The fact that they’re also healthy is the icing on the cake.” She’s right. And berries are healthier than the icing on the cake.

Seventeen-year-old chews tobacco, father approves Dr. Wallace: My younger brother (he’s 17) and two of his friends think they’re cool; they chew tobacco. I told him he looks like a dunce when he chews and spits. It’s terribly disgusting. I talked about this with my dad, but he said that he chewed tobacco when he was 17, and it was no big deal.

All tobacco users can become addicted to nicotine. It doesn’t make any difference if it’s smoked or chewed. Nicotine is an extremely powerful drug and addiction to it is difficult to overcome.

More than 9,000 people die every year from oral cancers caused by smokeless tobacco, according to the American Cancer Society. Chronic smokeless-tobacco users risk developing leukoplakia, a condition characterized by white, wrinkled patches of skin in the mouth where the tobacco is held. Leukoplakia often turns into cancer.

In 2013, thousands of smokeless tobacco users will die from cancer caused by “chewing and spitting.” Like your brother, they didn’t realize the power of nicotine until it was too late.

Make sure your father reads this column.

South wins on the board and calls for a heart, but East should grab the trick with his ace and lead his last diamond, giving his side one heart and four diamonds.

Even if South wins with dummy’s diamond king at trick one and calls for the heart jack, trying to look like someone planning a finesse, East should not be fooled. He should win with his ace, cash the diamond queen, and play his third diamond.
