Healing Gardens plans July 14 opening ST. CHARLES – Healing Gardens, a two-acre expanse of woodland and perennial gardens at Stone Hill Farm in St. Charles, will hold its next opening day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 14 at 37W249 Dean St., St. Charles. Admission is $5 a person and $10 a family.

Annual fundraiser helps preserve St. Charles history

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Crowds gathered Saturday for an outdoor fundraiser for the St. Charles Heritage Center, doing their part to help preserve the city’s history by raising money through raffles and bidding in a silent auction.

The gathering, which closed down part of South Third Avenue for the evening, marked the third annual fundraiser for the organization, which has preserved more than 10,000 photos and 15,000 artifacts related to the history of St. Charles and St. Charles Township.

Natalie Gacek, director of the center, said she expected this year’s fundraiser to be the biggest yet, with 150 to 200 people in attendance. She said this year’s goal was to raise $24,000 to $25,000 for the museum. The last two fundraisers, which have been more formal gatherings held at different locations, combined raised $45,000.

“This fundraiser will account for 25 percent of our overall budget,” she said. “It goes to help fulfill our mission, which is collecting, preserving and presenting St. Charles history and programs.”

Gacek said this is the first year they’ve done a pig roast, and it’s also the first year the event has been at the museum, 215 E. Main St. The St. Charles Heritage Center has been around for 80 years, and it has been in its current location since 2000.

The money helps pay to maintain the museum, Gacek said. It also helps fund museum programming, which includes lectures and educational programs with various entities, such as the St. Charles school district, the library and the convention and visitors bureau.

“We are the only organization that’s dedicated to preserving and displaying the history of St. Charles and the township,” said Joe Schelstreet, president of the St. Charles Heritage Center’s board. “Part of the beauty of the community is its rich history, and that’s what we do.”

Gacek said some people who visit the heritage center are surprised to learn that for more than 40 years, St. Charles was the “pickle capital of the the world,”

Arvena Guynn Longtime St. Charles resident said about supporting the fundraiser and said the center carries many pickle-related artifacts and promotional items.

Arvena and Vernon Guynn, who have lived in St. Charles since 1954, said they received a piece of the city’s pickle history when they were given an inflatable pickle pool toy from the wife of the Pickle Packers International owner, Bill Moore.

They showed their support for the heritage center for the second year in a row Saturday.

“It’s important to keep, and add, to the things we have here,” Arvena Guynn said.

Last year, the center received a desk and chair that belonged to former St. Charles resident Gen. John Farnsworth when he served 150 years ago as a U.S. representative.

Gacek said the nonprofit accepts donations year-round. She said anyone interested in donating can call the center at 630-5846967 or stop into the office.

Campton Hills church teams embark on 3rd annual service project

Katelyn Keck is no stranger to church-related service projects or mission work.

She also wants to learn as much as she can about organic farming.

So when the opportunity arose to combine both elements into one Sunday morning, Keck couldn’t say no to the chance to get to work with other members of her church at the St. Charles Park District’s Primrose Farm.

“I’m here with my church family, and I can volunteer and help promote a movement that is just very important and needs help,” Keck said. “It’s a good way to spend a Sunday morning.”

Keck and dozens of volunteers from Congregational United Church of Christ of Campton Hills on Sunday fanned out into surrounding communities to participate in a variety of service projects.

The effort came through the church’s annual “Jesus Has Left the Building” program.

Launched three years ago, the program is on a month with five Sundays. On the fifth Sunday, the church substitutes regular Sunday morning worship services with service projects throughout the Tri-Cities and in surrounding communities.

“It’s our church’s mission to try and get out into the community and help our fellow neighbors,” said Bob Brautigam, a Congregational UCC member who helped coordinate the projects this year.

This year, the church sent teams of volunteers, ranging in size from four to 16 workers, to perform yard work and do home repairs for needy church members and others in the community; to help the residents with severe disabilities who live at Marklund Hyde

Eight volunteers were dispatched to Primrose to assist workers there with the work of keeping up the publicly-owned working farm, which is dedicated to preserving and demonstrating various skills and farming techniques from the early 20th century.

Peter Ball of Elburn, captain of the church’s Primrose Farm volunteer team, said the work is important to the church and the community.

“The statement we’re making is to love thy neighbor,” Ball said. “And so we’re trying to be neighborly and to help people.

“We’d like to do it more.”

This year marked Keck’s first time participating in this particular project, although she has volunteered, first as a high school student and later as an adult, on various church missions projects in Chicago and elsewhere in the U.S. She said experiencing Primrose has prompted her to consider volunteering individually at the farm more regularly.

“I felt for a while that any type of organic farming is important,” Keck said. “Plus, it’s nice to be outside.”

Familiar connection sets up North Stars

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles North baseball coach Todd Genke turned to one of his former players to set in motion a new, summer opportunity for the North Stars.

Andrew Elke, a Class of 2006 North graduate, is now co-owner of the Force Elite travel baseball program, which organized a tournament this weekend at St. Charles North.

Elke, still among the program’s all-time leaders in several offensive categories, orchestrated the 11-team tournament Friday through Sunday at North in which the North Stars are the lone high school program in a field full of travel teams.

“He’s like ‘Yeah, I think we can put one together,’ so he’s really the one that got all the teams, kind of set the brackets up, set the schedules up, got the umpires,” Genke said. “We basically just provided the facility so that’s one less thing they have to pay for but I told him ‘Alright, we want to be in it as well.’

“He was able to get us in it. It’s just kind of neat. It’s different than what we’re used to in the spring or even the summer.”

The North Stars split a pair of

tournament games Saturday, their first day of competition in the event.

In their second game of the day, North defeated the Quad Cities Cannons, 9-3, in a game that was stopped after six innings because of the tournament time limit for games.

About midway through North’s summer schedule, Genke likes the way the North Stars are regrouping after an uncharacteristically lukewarm 2013 season.

“I’m seeing a lot of good things from the younger guys,” Genke said. “Our base running has really been good this summer. We’ve hit the ball pretty well. Pitching, we lost Ankur [Shah] and Sawyer [Chambers] so we have to replace some arms, but we’re kind of ahead of the curve in my opinion, from where we ended and where we thought we’d be.

“It’s a good experience. We kept 30 guys [for the summer] which is a lot, but I kept 30 because we had a lot of holes to fill and on top of that, I knew we’d have tournaments like this where we’re missing like four kids that are not here right now, but we’ve got 26 other guys.”

Considering there was a possibility for North to play three games in the tournament Sunday, that depth will

come in handy, especially on the pitcher’s mound and behind home plate.

Genke said North has four catchers he’s comfortable rotating in junior Carson Schmitt, senior Mitch Hurst, junior Kyle Khoury and junior Ben Theile. Schmitt and Hurst each caught one of Saturday’s games.

“I actually kind of like playing a lot of games in a short amount of time,” Schmitt said. “It keeps you sharp.”

Schmitt, a varsity call-up part-way through his sophomore season, helped spell graduated catcher Ryan Thomas behind the plate in the spring.

“I’ve been working hard at it, and hopefully I get the starting job come the spring-time,” said Schmitt, who went 2 for 3 offensively in the win against Quad Cities.

North junior third baseman Jordan Bergren reached base in all three of his at-bats in the win against the Cannons. His older brother, former North standout and current University of Minnesota outfielder Jake Bergren, was in attendance.

“Jordan, boy, he can hit,” Genke said. “He hits the ball really well.

We’re still trying to figure out what position he’s going to be but he’s got those good bloodlines. He’s a great kid.”

So, about those schedules.

Batavia starts its season with games against Glenbard North, Richards and Geneva. The Bulldogs will no doubt be ready to answer the bell, but that’s still a heckuva way to break in the gear.

If they can get by those three games unscathed, a third straight unbeaten regular season would be a strong possibility. Then again, based on how the playoffs went for the Bulldogs last year, regular season perfection is probably very far down the ‘Dogs’ to-do list for 2013.

Geneva also has a rough early slate, again. Not only do the Bulldogs loom in Week 3, but Geneva has Oswego (on the road) and Wheaton North leading up to B-town. Considering both St. Charles teams should be improved and they are on the docket for Weeks 5 (North) and 6 (East), the Vikings will need to be much-improved if they’re going to avoid being knocked out of the playoff picture early for the second straight fall.

St. Charles East starts the season on a Saturday afternoon in South Elgin.

Something ain’t quite right about opening the season with a matinee, but at least the Saints will be under the lights the rest of the way.

We’ve known for some time that North is going to start out at Elk Grove, new North Stars coach Rob Pomazak’s old employer, but it doesn’t make that matchup any less delicious. Take 7 on 7 results with a grain of salt, but the North Stars hung tough against some really good competition on Thursday at WWS. Looks like Pomazak has put together a quality staff, too.

Kaneland’s nonconference schedule could be juicier, but then again it ain’t easy for the Knights to get people on the schedule that they’re looking to play (see: Batavia). And Week 1 opponent Brooks gave Kaneland all it could handle last season, so the Knights should be primed for that one.

While the Batavia-Geneva rumble is regrettably early again this year, at least the good folks in the NI Big 12 haven’t lost their sense of building to a crescendo.

Kaneland-Morris is again ticketed for Week 9, and always pesky Sycamore should be a good warm-up for the Knights leading up to their big finale in Grundy County.

Nothing frustrates Ventura more than mental mistakes, and Viciedo found himself in the doghouse after another boneheaded play.

During Game 1 of Friday’s doubleheader, a 19-10 loss to the Indians, Viciedo easily was thrown out heading home to end the eighth inning after ignoring third base coach Joe McEwing’s stop sign. To cap it off, Viciedo was running half-heartedly when trying to score.

Viciedo explained Saturday that he didn’t anticipate Cleveland throwing home on the play, thus easing up after rounding third. Ventura immediately removed Viciedo from the game after the gaffe.

“It’s just one of those [plays where] you run hard,” Ventura said. “If it’s in play, you run as hard as you can.

There are very few times in the game where not running hard – if you walk, I don’t expect you to sprint down there – but other than that, if it’s in play, you gotta give [McEwing] a chance to send you.”

The wakeup call immediately paid off in Viciedo’s return to left field. He aggressively charged in on a fly ball hit by Cleveland’s Asdrubal Cabrera, the second batter of Saturday’s game, which was traveling toward the left-field

line. Viciedo timed it perfectly to make a diving catch.

Viciedo added another diving catch to end the third, robbing Michael Bourn of a hit.

“It’s absolutely difficult,” Viciedo said. “You don’t want to call it depressing, but it’s a hard time. We have to keep working. We have to keep plugging away. We have to answer for what we’re doing out there.”

Ventura didn’t rule out sending Viciedo to the minors so he can get back on track, but that option is a long shot at this point. However, if the Sox have any hope of turning around their season, Viciedo is one of the first on the team who must start contributing.

Otherwise, Ventura and the Sox might have to legitimately consider demoting him in attempt to turn around a career that is heading in the wrong direction.

“You see the potential for him to be able to make it through and be a very good player,” Ventura said. “Right now, I don’t necessarily see that. But any time you’re dealing with what [Viciedo’s] going through, it’s there for pretty much anybody.”

CHICAGO – The past week is one White Sox outfielder Dayan Viciedo wants to forget.

Repeated on-field miscues are only part of a season that has been largely forgettable for Viciedo. In what was supposed to be a standout season for Viciedo, coming off a breakout 2012 campaign, which featured him hitting .255 with 25 home runs and 78 RBIs in 147 games, has instead turned nightmarish.

“You’re trying to help him on his way, but it is tough,” Sox manager Robin Ventura said. “It’s very tough for a young guy to go through struggles, similar to what Gordon [Beckham] had last year. It’s not easy. In the end, when you make it through, you’re a tougher player and better player the rest of your career for having gone through it.”

Viciedo, 24, owned a .227 average entering Saturday’s game against the Cleveland Indians with only five home runs and 22 RBIs in 56 games.

Viciedo is expected to be the Sox’s No. 3 or 4 hitter of the future, potentially as soon as next season. His potential was on full display last season. But his lack of patience at the plate and the propensity to swing for the fences far too often is preventing Viciedo from taking the next step in his development.

He threatened to kill me and Billy, but I eventually got free. I have a criminal no-contact order on him, and he has no legal rights to Billy.

I have raised my son without any knowledge of his father. I feel it would be cruel to tell him how he came into the world. My mother disagrees.

She thinks it will backfire if and when Billy finds out. She points out that Billy has two half-sisters he doesn’t know about. I don’t like to keep that from him.

I need to protect my son, no matter what. But am I doing the right thing? I sometimes question what is in my son’s best interest and that of our relationship.

Please give me some advice.

Dear Living In The Present: I’m surprised your son hasn’t already asked about his father, because surely he must have questions.

When Billy asks, he should be told some of the truth in an age-appropriate way. He does not need to know about the rape, but he should know that his father was violent, so for your safety and his, the courts decided Billy’s father should not be in contact with the two of you.

Billy should also be told that until he is an adult it will have to remain that way.

When he’s older, he can be told that there are half-siblings. (I agree with your mother on that.) While you can’t protect your son forever, you can keep him safe until he’s old enough to process the information.

Dear Abby: My problem is my mother-in-law and her abundant use of perfume.

The last time she visited, it was so bad we had to open our windows to air out the rooms. (This was in January in Minnesota.)

My husband addressed the problem with her when I was pregnant, but now that the baby is here she’s back to her old habits.

We are all sensitive to perfumes and get headaches when exposed to it. When she visits, we can’t get away from the smell. I don’t wear perfume, but was always told that “perfume is to be discovered, never announced.”

However, when I say that around her, she dismisses it.

What’s the proper etiquette in addressing the perfume cloud that surrounds her? – The Nose Knows Dear Nose: I receive complaints about perfumes almost daily. Perfume “in abundance” can cause serious allergic reactions in people who are sensitive to it.

And when they are exposed to it in enclosed places (elevators, airplanes, houses with storm windows, gymnasiums, etc.), it can cause real problems.

Your mother-in-law should be reminded again that her perfume is causing headaches and asked to please not use it around you. Depending upon how old she is and her sense of smell, she may not realize she is using as much as she is.

Women’s perfumes and men’s after-shave lotions and colognes can also cause problems at the gym. When people who are exercising begin to sweat, the smell can become overpowering and a nuisance to others.

Scents that were applied the day before can turn rancid, so a shower before working out would be considerate if this could be you.
