Crowds raise funds for heritage center

nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Crowds gathered Saturday for an outdoor fundraiser for the St. Charles Heritage Center, with attendees doing their part to help preserve the city’s history by raising money through raffles and bidding in a silent auction.

The gathering, which closed down part of South Third Avenue for the evening, marked the third annual fundraiser for the organization, which has preserved more than 10,000 photos and 15,000 artifacts related to the history of St. Charles and St. Charles Township.

Natalie Gacek, director of the center, said she expected this year’s fundraiser to be the biggest yet, with 150 to 200 people in attendance.

She said this year’s goal was to raise $24,000 to $25,000 for the museum.

The last two fundraisers combined, which have been more formal gatherings held at different locations, helped raise $45,000.

“We are a 501(c)3 not-forprofit, and this fundraiser will account for 25 percent of our overall budget,” she said.

“It goes to help fulfill our mission, which is collecting, preserving and presenting St. Charles history and programs.”

Gacek said this is the first year the organization has done a pig roast, and it’s also the first year the event was at the museum, 215 E. Main St., St. Charles.

The St. Charles Heritage Center has been around for 80 years, and it has been in its current location since 2000.

The money help pays to maintain the museum, Gacek said.

It also helps fund museum programming, which includes lectures and educational programs with various entities, such as St. Charles School District 303, the library and the convention and visitors bureau.

Gacek said some people who visit the heritage center are surprised to learn that for more than 40 years, St. Charles was the “pickle capital of the world” and said the center carries many pickle-related artifacts and promotional items.

Arvena and Vernon Guynn, who have lived in St. Charles since 1954, said they received a piece of the city’s pickle history when they were given an inflatable pickle pool toy from the wife of the Pickle Packers International owner, Bill Moore.

They showed their support for the heritage center for the second year in a row Saturday.

“It’s important to keep and add to the things we have here,” Arvena Guynn said.

Last year, the center received a desk and chair that belonged to former St. Charles resident Gen. John Farnsworth when he served 150 years ago as a U.S. representative.

Gacek said the nonprofit organization accepts donations year-round. She said anyone interested in donating can call the center at 630-584-6967 or stop into the office.

Preservation commission Employee injured in chemical flash fire pick polarizes aldermen BATAVIA

editorial@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – An employee at Curwood/Bermis on Kirk Road in Batavia was slightly injured Monday morning after a chemical flash fire.

Batavia firefighters arrived at 11:12 a.m. to the business at 475 North Kirk Road, Batavia, and had the fire under control at 11:20 a.m. The fire caused an estimated $5,000 in damage to the building and its contents.

According to a news release from the Batavia Fire

Department, an employee mixing flammable chemicals without proper grounding caused a flash fire, possibly because of a static electricity charge.

The fire singed the ceiling of the flammable liquids storage room at the facility and caused a foam system to activate, flooding the room with fire suppressing foam and stopping the fire from doing any further damage, according to the release.

The employee was treated for minor singes to his forearms, according to the release.

8POLICE REPORTS Geneva • Julie A. Lawson, 36, of the 600 block of Oakwood Drive, Geneva, was charged Wednesday, June 26, with criminal damage to property.

According to police reports, Lawson damaged a microwave valued at $80.

• Mark D. Beltran, 38, of the 100 block of East State Street, North Aurora, was charged Saturday, June 22, with driving under the influence, driving with a blood-alcohol level of more than 0.08 percent, driving with a suspended license and possession of drug paraphernalia.

8LOCAL BRIEFS BATAVIA – The Waterline Writers second annual open mic night is set for 7 p.m. July 21 at Water Street Studios, 160 S. Water St., Batavia.

“It’s about faith in the mayor’s appointment,” Burns said.

Fifth Ward Alderman Tom Simonian suggested that Bruno run for mayor himself. Bruno said he had no plans at the present time.

For his part, Ploppert took the divided vote and ensuing debate as a badge of honor.

“I have no hidden agenda,” Ploppert said. “I have no intent to try and dilute anything. My love for Geneva is my only agenda ... and to make sure there are differing opinions. Like Mayor Burns said, if we all have the same opinion on the board, we’re going to have ‘group think.’ ”

Steel Crazy to perform July 23 at The Holmstad

GENEVA – What would typically have been perfunctory approval of the mayor’s appointees to the Geneva Historic Preservation Commission on Monday turned into a debate on the process of how volunteers are chosen for advisory boards and commissions.

Aldermen voted unanimously to accept Mayor Kevin Burns’ appointment of Geri Schock-Soderberg, a nurse and 2002 graduate of Geneva High School. But when it came to the appointment of another Geneva grad, Zac Ploppert – Class of 2008 – the vote was split, 8-2.

The dissenting votes came from 1st Ward Alderman Mike Bruno – who defeated Ploppert for the aldermanic seat in April in a hotly contested race – and 4th Ward Alderman Dorothy Flanagan.

“It seemed like this candidate came in with an agenda to dilute the Historic Preser-

vation Commission,” Bruno said of Ploppert. “There seems to be no shortage of other qualified candidates.

I’m a little concerned with the stated public opinions that we have had from Mr. Ploppert to see him nominated here.”

Bruno referred to their differences on the campaign trail with regards to property owners’ rights.

Fifth Ward Alderman Craig Maladra said while Ploppert “did make some strong statements during the campaign,” his perspective was held by many.

Maladra said Ploppert’s opinions would not dilute the commission’s charge because it had to follow the guidelines of the U.S. Interior Department.

Burns said bringing in different opinions would only strengthen the advisory body, not dilute it.

Volunteer teams reach out to community

She also wants to learn as much as she can about organic farming.

So when the opportunity arose to combine both elements into one Sunday morning, Keck said she couldn’t say no to the chance to work with other members of her church at the St. Charles Park District’s Primrose Farm.

“I’m here with my church family, and I can volunteer and help promote a movement that is just very important and needs help,” Keck said. “It’s a good way to spend a Sunday morning.”

Keck and several dozen other volunteers from Congregational United Church of Christ of St. Charles, fanned out into the communities surrounding their church to take part in a variety of service projects.

The effort came through the church’s annual “Jesus Has Left the Building” program.

Launched three years ago, the program takes place on a month with five Sundays. On

the fifth Sunday, the church substitutes regular Sunday morning worship services with a variety of service projects throughout the Tri-Cities and in surrounding communities.

“It’s our church’s mission to try and get out into the community and help our fellow neighbors,” said Bob Brautigam, a Congregational UCC member who helped coordinate the projects this year.

This year, the church sent teams of volunteers – ranging in size from four to 16 workers – to a variety of sites to perform yard work and home repairs for needy church members and others in the community; to help residents with severe disabilities who live at Marklund Hyde Center near Mill Creek play a unique brand of baseball; to clear and beautify community open space and cemeteries; to do grounds work at Anderson Animal Shelter in South Elgin; and to spread mulch around trees at Primrose Farm, among other community service projects.

Peter Ball of Elburn, captain of the church’s Primrose Farm volunteer team, said the work is important to the church and the community.

“The statement we’re making is to love thy neighbor,” Ball said. “And so we’re trying to be neighborly and to help people.

“We’d like to do it more.”

Keck said this year marked her first time participating in this particular project, although she has volunteered, first as a high school student and later as an adult, on various church missions projects in Chicago and elsewhere in the U.S. She said experiencing Primrose has prompted her to consider volunteering individually at the farm more regularly.

“I felt for a while that any type of organic farming is important,” Keck said. “Plus, it’s nice to be outside.”

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles City Council on Monday approved a move to implement a five-person liquor commission.

Mayor Ray Rogina said he plans to announce the names of the two city aldermen and the two city residents who will make up the commission later this week. As mayor, Rogina will serve as the liquor commissioner and the other

members will serve as advisory members.

“My role as liquor commissioner will be to make the final decision,” Rogina said after the meeting. “But I will take their input very seriously.”

Rogina added that the City Council has worked closely with Police Chief Jim Lamkin, who he said has been an “integral part” of the commission. He said he hopes the commission will help curb some liquor-related issues in

St. Charles, such as over-serving patrons, underage drinking and fighting.

The next phase, Rogina said, is to define a bar and a restaurant, and possibly implement new protocols such as reviewing 2 a.m. liquor licenses on an annual basis.

“I just think it gives us four extra sets of eyes for the purpose of making those decisions,” he said.

The ordinance sets some restrictions on who can serve as a commissioner.

Members should not own or work at any licensed establishment, nor should their spouse, parents, siblings or children.

The commission would meet as called by the liquor commissioner. At the commissioner’s request, it would review applications and background investigations and submit findings and recommendations to the commissioner.

In other business, aldermen approved another 30-day

extension to City Administrator Brian Townsend’s contract, which expired May 6.

It’s the third time the council voted to extend his contract for 30 days while the contract is negotiated.

The latest extension goes through Aug. 5.

Townsend has worked as city administrator since 2005 and received a new contract in 2009 that set his earnings at $217,000, which includes salary, travel and health insurance.

After several business owners expressed concerns during a public hearing Monday for

the proposed special service area, aldermen voted to continue the hearing until Sept. 3. In the meantime, city staff plans to meet with them about their concerns.

A special service area to fund Batavia MainStreet was established in November 2008, but that special service area expires in November. The new special service area would cov-

er the same area as the existing one, and the maximum annual levy – $40,000 – would be the same.

The amount levied in the new special service area would be less than the $40,000 annual levy, Batavia Community Development Director Scott Buening said.

Buening said the surplus was caused because of the way the County Tax Extension of-

fice levies the tax on properties that are both in a TIF District and an SSA per state assessment requirements.

The courts were requesting the board pay the money from a contingency fund that traditionally has been used to pay for expenses that exceed the amounts budgeted.

County departments and offices routinely submit socalled supplemental budget requests to the County Board to make up for shortfalls in their budgets, either because they receive less revenue than first anticipated or because their costs exceed earlier estimates.

Last year, the County Board kept county budgets

flat, meaning that, as costs increase, supplemental budget requests to be drawn from contingency funds become more likely.

However, County Board members questioned the bill submitted by the courts.

County Board member Doug Scheflow, R-Elgin, questioned whether the judiciary and its related offices had done enough to streamline their current budgets to find much of the money needed.

Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said he anticipates the board will receive supplemental requests from other departments, too, meaning the board will have other

GENEVA – Running Kane County’s courts will cost more this year than last year.

And the county will need to pump in more money to keep its courts open later this year than it originally had budgeted.

But how much more the county will need to pay still is being worked out.

In coming weeks, Kane County Board committees again will tackle that question after the board’s Finance Committee took a pass last week on recommending the full board approve a request from the

court administrators to supply an additional $200,000 to the judiciary.

Administrators overseeing operations at the courthouses brought the request to the board to deal with a projected shortfall in their budget.

The judiciary officials said the additional money was needed to pay for personnel and services mandated by the state.

The list of expenses needing additional funding included about $70,000 to pay jurors and $105,000 to pay contracted interpreters.

“You are going to pay this, you’ve got no choice,” said Kane County Court Adminis-

However, the committee ultimately sent the matter back to a different committee after learning that the funding request may not give the courts all they need for the remainder of the county’s current fiscal year.

Finance Committee Chairman John Hoscheit, R-St. Charles, said the board would like to see a full budget request before making a funding decision.

“We want to know: Is this going to cover you through the end of the year?” Hoscheit said. “Since it wasn’t, we asked them to come back with a revised request.”

Hoscheit said he did not expect the revised request to be “significantly higher” than the current request.

Pushing state’s boundaries Mixed reaction to recommendation to lower DUI threshold

“I don’t know if having a law on the books will change the behavior of those who choose to behave irresponsibly,” Olesen said. “Those who are responsible will continue to be responsible.”

Olesen is skeptical about a recommendation by the National Transportation Safety Board that all states lower their drunken driving threshold to a blood-alcohol level of 0.05, as part of a series of suggestions to reduce the number of alcohol-related highway deaths.

The proposal is getting a mixed reaction from Kane County bar owners, lawmakers and police departments.

Mike Maridis, manager of Rookies All American Pub & Grill in St. Charles, said the recommendation could cost the restaurant business if it is implemented.

A woman weighing less than 120 pounds can reach a blood-alcohol level of 0.05 after just one drink, studies show.

A man weighing up to 160 pounds can reach 0.05 after two drinks. Maridis said he hoped that patrons would act responsibly, regardless of what the law is.

In Illinois, a driver is considered to be under the influence if that motorist has a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.08 or more, has used any illegal substance or is impaired by medication. A driver’s blood-alcohol level is based on the ratio of alcohol to blood or breath. The Illinois General Assembly in 1997 approved lowering the illegal blood-alcohol level from 0.10 to 0.08.

“Most Americans think that we’ve solved the problem of impaired driving, but in fact, it’s still a national epidemic,” said Hersman in May, in announcing the recommendation. “On average, every hour one person is killed and 20 more are injured.”

According to the NTSB, nearly 10,000 people are killed in crashes involving alcohol-impaired drivers every year in the United States, and more than 173,000 are injured, with 27,000 suffering

incapacitating injuries.

“The research clearly shows that drivers with a BAC above 0.05 are impaired and at a significantly greater risk of being involved in a crash where someone is killed or injured,” Hersman said.

She noted that 100 countries on six continents have blood-alcohol limits set at 0.05 or lower.

State Rep. Kay Hatcher, R-Yorkville, said she believes the recommendation merits further study.

“I’ve done enough background reading to believe

it’s worth investigating further,” Hatcher said. “Our focus should always be public safety.”

Hatcher said state lawmakers might debate the issue soon and that some sort of legislation suggesting the lowered limit might be filed in the next session.

“Between now and then, there should be a lot more data we will have access to,” Hatcher said. “Without data, it’s only an opinion.”

The leaders of local police departments said they want to do what they can to create improved driving conditions. Geneva Police Cmdr. Eric Passarelli said the department is supportive of legislation that makes the roadways safer for pedestrians and drivers.

“If the state of Illinois, through its research, de-

termines that lowering the blood-alcohol level from 0.08 to 0.05 is appropriate, then we will enforce the statute,” Passarelli said.

St. Charles Police Chief James Lamkin said his department didn’t have a strong opinion for or against NTSB’s recommendation.

“Our goal is for people to be responsible and make good decisions, and don’t put themselves and others in harm’s way by drinking and driving,” Lamkin said.

Rita Kreslin, the executive director of Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists, said a lower blood-alcohol threshold could help reduce the number of alcohol-related crashes.

“If the NTSB says that impairment starts at 0.05, we would support that,” Kreslin said.

Kathryn graduated high school from West Aurora, Class of 1948, and enjoyed meeting with other alumni each month. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Batavia where she volunteered as a teacher and superintendent of the Sunday School program. For several years, she helped the Valley Sheltered Workshop and also worked as an operator for Illinois Bell during the 1950s.

She is survived by her loving children, Lisa (Peter) Offutt of Mossville and Kurt (Cindy) Hall of North Aurora; four grandchildren, William and John Offutt and Jarred and Steven Hall; her brother, Ferris (Connie) Gates of Phoenix; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Kathryn was preceded in death by her beloved husband, LaFayette; her son, LaFayette S. Hall III; a brother, Richard Gates; and a sister, Marjo-

rie Miller.

ELBURN – Donald “Don” R. Andree, 72, of Elburn, passed away at his home surrounded by the love and prayers of his family Saturday, June 29, 2013. Don courageously battled Alzheimer’s and the effects of several strokes that plagued his body, but never his spirit.

He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Kathy; two children, Dorene (Bob) Stanley and Karen (Jeremy Lake) Andree; three grandchildren, Karris (T.J.) Foster and their daughter, Kathryn, Amelia (Michael) Stahl and Hollyann Stanley; two brothers, Henry (VI) Andree and Robert (Karen) Timmons; and many nieces, nephews and a community of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlotte and Arthur Timmons.

Officials: Fourth of July fireworks show to go on

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The city’s Fourth of July fireworks show will go on as planned Thursday after organizers raised 80 percent of the funds needed to put on the show.

“The Batavia community has really come through this year, and we’re on a good footing for next year,” said Mark Davis, chairman of the Batavia Fireworks Committee. “It is going to be another great show this year.”

In February, the Batavia Access Fireworks Committee announced it had to raise $50,000 by May 1 or the show would be canceled. Davis said about 80 percent of the money has been raised.

Ten signs a candidate is not ‘the one’

By JENNIFER RUBIN The Washington Post If we learned anything from 2012, it was that Republicans may glance at oddballs but, unlike right-wing pundits, don’t think characters like Herman Cain can be president.

They might date Newt Gingrich, but they don’t settle down with him.

It isn’t hard to separate the dates from the spouses in presidential primaries, though attention is now being given to a couple of terribly unserious candidates: Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, who likens Edward Snowden to Martin Luther King Jr. and talks about containing a nuclear-armed Iran, and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, who, like President Obama before him, has barely moved into his freshman office and so far is interested only in rhetoric, not in legislative accomplishment.

There are 10 signs that tell voters this one is not the one: 1. The candidate votes “no” on everything.

2. The candidate becomes the victim of the mainstream media.

3. The candidate is responsible for nothing and is not obliged to offer alternatives.

4. The candidate confuses talk with accomplishment and derides accomplishment as “selling out.”

5. The candidate considers legislative compromise and executive deal-making sins.

6. The candidate can dish it out and make up some weird stuff but takes great offense when his own words are used against him.

7. The candidate denounces “business as usual” – but claiming to be the outsider and denouncing any compromise have pretty much been business as usual recently.

8. The candidate feigns intellectual sophistication but isn’t very adept at policy and misreads most of what he cites as authority on a given subject.

9. The candidate considers actual people to be an afterthought; they take a back seat to abstract principles.

10. The candidate name-calls but doesn’t make arguments on the merits.

Pat Quinn and the Democrats, as well. Remember, Democrats control all branches of state government. Their failure to lead and deal with this clear and present crisis is as infuriating to me as it should be to every Illinois taxpayer.

When I served as Gov. Jim Edgar’s chief of staff, we made the tough but fair choices.

credit rating improved! That’s a far cry from the nearly dozen credit downgrades Illinois received under Democrat Gov. Rod Blagojevich and Quinn.

I voted for Speaker of the House Michael Madigan’s pension plan. It wasn’t perfect, but it was the best plan at the time. Unfortunately, the powerful sway of the unions was too much for my Democrat colleagues.

As a result, Illinois taxpayers are on the hook for another $17 million each and every day the crisis remains unresolved. That’s money we cannot use for education and other necessary programs.

Today, spending is out of control.

We have new and expanded Medicaid

programs under Obamacare. We’re failing to pay for needed improvements to our roads and bridges and our backlog of unpaid bills continues to grow.

You can almost hear the suitcases closing as businesses consider packing up and moving out of Illinois.

Other employers are thinking twice about relocating here. Who can blame them?

The spring legislative session may be over, but our work certainly isn’t.

Let’s get our priorities straight. Let’s fix this pension problem now, so we can make Illinois work again.

Two of the Sherman men – Burlington Central junior Andrew and freshman brother Joseph – continued their family’s love of the sport Monday at the IJGA Jarvis Memorial tournament at Cress Creek Country Club in Naperville.

“It started with my dad,” Joseph said. “My dad was a big golfer in high school, and then my oldest brother, who’s going to be a sophomore in college, he was golfing. He was pretty good.

And then Andrew and I just kind of naturally picked it up because the family was golfing.”

Joseph said it wasn’t quite like the two were playing sideby-side, as they teed off hours apart from one another and were grouped in different age divisions. But still, for Andrew, playing on the same course and day as his younger brother was a great experience.

“It’s a blast,” Andrew said. “I

love watching him and walking around with him. He’s great. He’s coming up right on my tail. It’s just a blast playing with him.

“There’s a lot of motivation for me to keep practicing and keep getting lower because I can’t be beat by my little brother.”

The two will be able to compare scores a lot more closely next season, when they both compete on the Rockets’ golf team.

Andrew was able to edge out his brother on this day, posting a 78 (6-over par) compared to Joseph’s 84 (12-over), but he wasn’t the area’s top finisher.

St. Charles East junior Ronnie Griggs shot a 77 (5-over), just one stroke away from the tournament-low of 76 in the boys senior division, ages 16 to 18.

“I thought I hit the ball pretty well, had a really good day with the short game and putts today,” Griggs said. “I’ve been practicing putting a lot, so I know that’s finally starting to help a lot. I’ve been working on my irons a lot, and that’s helping, too.”

The unorthodox tour was set in motion by connections from Pelley’s business dealings. Pelley, who works in the hardware industry, said he goes to Taiwan about six times a year, and his wife, Sherry, was born there.

Pelley said he was conducting business with a man from Taiwan a few years ago when their mutual passion for baseball come up.

“He introduced me to his uncle, and he’s in charge of all of the youth baseball in Taiwan,” Pelley said. “ … About three years ago when I started coaching my son in baseball, I kind of floated the idea, and it’s taken us this long to get everybody kind of moving in

Pelley and fellow Bandits coach Dan Rothengass said they are still looking for a few additional players for the trip after a couple boys who originally planned to go no longer are able to make the journey. So far, eight boys are on board.

Rothengass said many of the games in Taiwan will be played in large stadiums and he expects several thousand fans could attend in the baseball-loving country.

“Even my son, he doesn’t even realize how big this is going to be,” Rothengass said. “I don’t know how big it’s going to be. The more it happens, the closer it gets, it’s going to be huge. But I don’t know if they quite grasp that. I mean, they’re kids.”

said it was great to be able to compete alongside – and against – his teammates.

“It’s pretty fun,” McCadam said. “You’ll be waiting on a couple tees later in the day.

It’s nice to have people to talk to and just talk about their round and joke around. It’s always fun.

“It kind of does [feel like a

team event]. But, now we’re competing against each other instead of as a team, so that adds some more fun to it.”

In contrast with Griggs and Andrew Sherman, who both finished near the top of the leaderboard, many golfers weren’t pleased with their scores. High numbers were certainly impacted by windy

conditions at Cress Creek, something several golfers said made a huge difference. “[The wind was] pretty bad,” said Batavia native Alex Sommerfeldt, a junior at Benet Academy. “If you’re aiming at the pin, it’s probably going to go 10 yards, 15 yards to the right, so you’ve got to compensate for that.”

Some saw the heavy breeze as just another hazard to work around.

“It definitely made you think about your club selection and what type of shot you were going to hit,” Andrew Sherman said. “You had to adjust on a lot of the holes.

But I would say it made it a bit more of a challenge.”

BATAVIA – A group of local youth baseball players shouldn’t have much trouble whipping up a compelling “What I did this summer” essay once the new school year arrives.

Several players from the Kane County Bronco League 13U age group are planning a trip of a lifetime Aug. 5 to 15 to Taiwan, where they are scheduled to play nine games in 10 days against Taiwanese teams.

“Lots of videos, lots of pictures,” said Batavia Bandits coach Mark Pelley, the trip’s chief organizer. “A lot of memories.”

On Monday afternoon, players, coaches, family members and even Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke gathered at Prairie-Lathem Park for a kick-off gathering that included photos with the boys flanked by a U.S. flag. Pelley said his understanding is this will be the first U.S. youth baseball team to make a trip to Taiwan, ever.

“We’ve been told by the Taiwan people that we are the first American youth team to go to Taiwan to play,” Pelley said. “They’ve had relationships with some Korean teams and some Japanese teams but they’ve never had a U.S. team come visit them.

We’re supposed to be the first, and they’ve been coming over here since the ’70s.

“The Taiwan Little League guys have been in our [Little League World Series] since I think ’77. But this guy that’s in charge of it thinks ‘No, we’ve never had a USA team

League, and representatives from Batavia and St. Charles North Youth Baseball and the St. Charles Crush will be part of the traveling contingent.

Joey Beaudoin, 13, plays for the St. Charles Crush, and is part of the group. Beaudoin said a successful trip would include “winning some games, like four or five.” He acknowledged some nerves.

“Playing in front of a lot of people that are out of [our] country,” Beaudoin said.

Pelley called Taiwan “a beautiful place.”

“It’s very modern, very clean,” he said. “The people are super friendly and it’s super safe.”

Pelley said he’s unsure what the competitive landscape will be for the games.

“In meeting with them, I kind of explained to them our group pretty much is a ‘B’ level team,” Pelley said.

“We play in the Kane County Bronco League and we’re a silver team in that division.

So I explained to them, we’re not great, we’re not bad. We’re kind of in the middle.”

The temperature in Taiwan is not expected to be so moderate – scorching hot weather is the expectation. As for the food, even some potentially picky middle-schoolers shouldn’t have much trouble, Pelley said.

“There’s plenty of Chinese food that they’ll enjoy, and we want them to learn a little bit about the culture,” Pelley said. “But we have one night at T.G.I. Friday’s … a little McDonald’s here and there.

It’ll be a good mix. We won’t make them eat really spicy stuff, unless they want to.”

Michigan latest campus tour for Geneva boys hoops Geneva added Michigan to its summer boys basketball team camp tour this past weekend.

DePaul, Illinois-Chicago and Wisconsin came before it.

The Vikings figure those trips can only help what happens next.

“I don’t think there’s any team that’s doing what we’re doing this summer,” Geneva coach Phil Phil Ralston Ralston said. “I think we’ve tried to push the pedal to the metal as much as we can. This year was about using our 25 days [of IHSA-approved summer contact] and maximizing them as best we possibly could, and I don’t know many other teams that are going to four college team camps in one summer.”

The Vikings typically attend one team camp each offseason, but with juniors Nate Navigato (forward) and

QUICK READ Kevin Druley KJ Santos (wing) becoming increasingly bigger blips on Division I recruiters’ radars by the shot, Ralston thought some extra northern (and eastern) exposure couldn’t hurt.

Still, that doesn’t trump the Vikings’ team focus.

“We certainly have a lot of nice pieces, and we want to try to push us so we can actually achieve something we haven’t in a long time,” Ralston said.

That would be a regional title, hardware that’s eluded the program since the 1985-86 season.

Geneva flirted with the feat in March as an underdog 12th seed pushing eventual supersectional qualifier West Aurora in the 4A Wheaton Warrenville South Regional title game.

The road to improving upon the Vikings’ 21 victories in 2012-13 began last month with a souped-up travel schedule as well as important matters closer to home.

Last week, the Vikings advanced to the tournament finals of their 5-year-old summer league for the first time, losing to Larkin, 54-51. Geneva took about as long to reflect on that result as the two-minute, running-clock overtime it needed to defeat St. Charles North in the semifinals, but there will be plenty more absorption in the weeks before.

“We’ve got to get better in our press, better in our offenses. Kind of a learning experience for the season,” Navigato said. “Things we can do more of, things we can do less of. Know our players and how we can play.”

A top-eight finish among 48 at Wisconsin’s team camp offered glimpses of what that could be.

A week later, the Vikings were bound for the campus of

one of the Badgers’ Big Ten rivals, Michigan.

“We’re doing everything we can to get our kids battle-ready for the coming season,” Ralston said. “We’ve had certainly more highs than lows, but it’s kind of shown us the areas where we’re deficient, and what we need to really work on this coming season.”

Wheaton Academy adds Olympian to coaching staff: Jim Spivey, former U.S. middle distance runner and threetime Olympian, will team up with Wheaton Academy’s Chris Felinski, 13-year veteran cross country assistant coach and 2000 Wheaton Academy graduate, to co-lead the Warriors’ cross country team, the school announced Monday.

Spivey competed in the 1984, 1992 and 1996 Olympics and has held head coaching positions at the University of Chicago and Vanderbilt University.

Felinski, of Wayne, has

been the assistant cross country coach at Wheaton Academy for the past 13 years.

During that time he has trained varsity boys who have qualified for state final races four times with a school best finish of 16th place in 2007. In his new role as co-coach with Spivey, he will continue to train and coach athletes, and will also handle day-to-day responsibilities, as well as serve as meet manager for all home cross country and track meets.

“We are excited about our kids having the best of both worlds; an on-campus coach fully capable of assuming head coaching responsibilities, working under the leadership of an experienced college coach and Olympian,” Head of School Gene Frost said in a news release.

The Cougars and Timber Rattlers play the fourth of their five-game set today with a 12:05 first pitch from Fox Cities Stadium. After making a name for herself as DeKalb’s girls varsity basketball coach, the Northern Illinois alumna realized that she wanted to take the next step into the college ranks, and it hasn’t taken long to make her way up.

After a year as an assistant at Division III North Central College, she came back home as the Director of Basketball Operations at her alma mater last summer. Just one year later, she was elevated to assistant coach, a completely new role.

“I’m coaching now, on the court. That is the biggest change for me,” Whitman said. “The second thing would be recruiting.

I can go on the road now, and I can look at the players that we’re trying to bring in.”

In just three years, she has

gone from coaching at a high school to a Division I university, and she hasn’t had to go far to do it. Whitman has become a regular in the community, which she believes is a big reason why she has made such a fast ascent.

“Experience came into play,” she said. “Coach Bennett says that she heard a lot about me from the community. I never knew that until I got here, so I think that in a way, the community has helped me get this job.”

It definitely goes beyond that. Whitman was a part of the NIU program from 1990-93, an era that saw two NCAA Tournament appearances and a WNIT berth. She also has past ties with head coach Kathi Bennett, having grown up with her brother, Tony Bennett, and attending camps run by her father, Dick Bennett. Both have been highly successful coaches on the Division I level.

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles North baseball coach Todd Genke turned to one of his former players to set in motion a new, summer opportunity for the North Stars.

Andrew Elke, a Class of 2006 North graduate, is now co-owner of the Force Elite travel baseball program, which organized a tournament this weekend at St. Charles North.

Elke, still among the program’s all-time leaders in several offensive categories, orchestrated the 11-team tournament Friday through Sunday at North in which the North Stars are the lone high school program in a field full of travel teams.

“He’s like ‘Yeah, I think we can put one together,’ so he’s really the one that got all the teams, kind of set the brackets up, set the schedules up, got the umpires,” Genke said. “We basically just provided the facility so that’s one less thing they have to pay for but I told him ‘Alright, we want to be in it as well.’

“He was able to get us in it.

It’s just kind of neat. It’s different than what we’re used to in the spring or even the summer.”

The North Stars split a pair

of tournament games Saturday, their first day of competition in the event. In their second game of the day, North defeated the Quad Cities Cannons, 9-3, in a game that was stopped after six innings because of the tournament time limit for games.

About midway through North’s summer schedule, Genke likes the way the North Stars are regrouping after an uncharacteristically lukewarm 2013 season.

“I’m seeing a lot of good things from the younger guys,” Genke said. “Our base running has really been good this summer. We’ve hit the ball pretty well. Pitching, we lost Ankur [Shah] and Sawyer [Chambers] so we have to replace some arms, but we’re kind of ahead of the curve in my opinion, from where we ended and where we thought we’d be.

“It’s a good experience. We kept 30 guys [for the summer] which is a lot, but I kept 30 because we had a lot of holes to fill and on top of that, I knew we’d have tournaments like this where we’re missing like four kids that are not here right now, but we’ve got 26 other guys.”

Considering there was a possibility for North to play three games in the tournament Sunday, that depth will come in

handy, especially on the pitcher’s mound and behind home plate.

Genke said North has four catchers he’s comfortable rotating in junior Carson Schmitt, senior Mitch Hurst, junior Kyle Khoury and junior Ben Theile.

Schmitt and Hurst each caught one of Saturday’s games.

“I actually kind of like playing a lot of games in a short amount of time,” Schmitt said.

“It keeps you sharp.”

Schmitt, a varsity call-up partway through his sophomore season, helped spell graduated catcher Ryan Thomas behind the plate in the spring.

“I’ve been working hard at it, and hopefully I get the starting job come the spring-time,” said Schmitt, who went 2 for 3 offensively in the win against Quad Cities.

North junior third baseman Jordan Bergren reached base in all three of his at-bats in the win against the Cannons. His older brother, former North standout and current University of Minnesota outfielder Jake Bergren, was in attendance.

“Jordan, boy, he can hit,” Genke said. “He hits the ball really well. We’re still trying to figure out what position he’s going to be but he’s got those good bloodlines. He’s a great kid.”

Top tier: Los Angeles (8), Boston (7), New York (4), Miami (4) Considering how passé most Southern California sports fans seem to be, it’s amusing that Los Angeles leads the millennium in championships.

The Lakers have won five titles, while the Kings, Angels and Ducks have chipped in with one apiece.

If you’re looking for the most well-rounded modern sports city, that would be Boston, which has celebrated championships in the NFL (3), MLB (2), NBA (1) and NHL (1).

Second tier: Chicago (3), Pittsburgh (3), Detroit (3), San Antonio (3) Not bad, right? The Hawks’ two Stanley Cup titles, combined with the White Sox’s World Series title in 2005, means Chicago is tied for fifth place in a narrow race for 21st century championships.

The San Antonio Spurs whiffed on a chance to push their one-team town up the list, while – this is crazy to write – the Pittsburgh Pirates might have a better shot than the Detroit Tigers to win this year’s World Series.

So the next time someone starts to complain about how difficult it is to be a Chicago sports fan, shush him or her with your best Ditka staredown.

We’re actually lucky to be here.

Familiar connection sets up North Stars

CHICAGO – As sports fans, it’s easy to grumble.

Easy to nitpick. Easy to scan the baseball standings and wonder what life is like in other, happier sports cities.

Does the sun shine brighter in the Sunshine State? If everything is bigger in Texas, how big must their smiles be? Does your GPS system know the way to San Jose?

But the truth is that we’re lucky.

Really lucky.

Sure, the Cubs are about as exciting to watch as a highway construction project. Instead of orange cones, Theo Epstein and his front-office staff have lined up veterans on shortterm deals until younger reinforcements are ready.

And, yeah, the White Sox are kind of like that room in your house that somehow becomes more of a mess with each passing day. You would clean it up if you had two weeks and a bulldozer, but it’s easier to close the door and pretend it doesn’t exist.

But we really are lucky.

Less than a week ago, millions of sports fans filled the streets of downtown and packed Grant Park for the Blackhawks’ Stanley Cup championship parade and rally. Three years before that, millions lined Michigan Avenue for the same purpose.

Since 2010, do you know how many U.S. cities have celebrated more major professional sports championships than Chicago? Here’s a hint: It’s less than one.

See your lawn? The grass is greener than in all but three cities – Miami, San Francisco, and Los Angeles – which have matched Chicago with two titles during the decade.

Let’s turn back the clock even further, all the way to 2000, when gas cost less than $2 a gallon and hanging chads were a dime a dozen. If you started tracking title winners since the day “Y2K” was exposed as

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM The names of antiques sometimes change as research corrects old errors. In the 1930s, an auction house sold a pair of what were called “Lowestoft” vases that were large enough to put on a fireplace mantel. They were named after the English town where they were thought to have been made in the 18th century. The vases had a traditional Chinese shape and were made of bluish-white porcelain decorated with a blue, green and orange coat of arms and slightly raised white scrolls. When the same vases were sold again in the 1950s, they were described as “Chinese export porcelain” because experts had learned that in the mid-1700s the Lowestoft factory was making early blueand-white English Delft souvenirs of regional interest, not porcelain like the vases. Researchers also had learned that porcelain made in China in the 18th century was being exported to England and that some had made its way to Lowestoft. But the Chinese porcelain exported to the West back then, although very good, was not the top-quality porcelain made in China for wealthy Chinese families. Some of the export pieces were plain, Chinese porcelain with added new decorations like coats-of-arms or pictures of ships. But there were also other problems with the pair of vases. The vases were not Chinese at all; they actually were copies made by Jacob Petit (1796-1868), who opened a shop in Paris in 1863. Painted raised white scrolls are the clue to identifying Petit’s copies of Chinese export porcelain.

Petit also made copies of Sevres, Meissen, English dinnerware and more. So be careful when looking for information about Chinese export or Lowestoft porcelain.

Information in old books is not accurate. And often, information online is from old books. Presentday auction-house descriptions and

information in recent publications usually is accurate. Jacob Petit copies of Chinese export porcelain are collected today. A single one of his vases is worth about $800. *** Q: My mother would like to know what her bound volume of “Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper” is worth. The spine is marked “Vol. 1,” and the book includes issues dated from Dec. 15, 1855, to May 31, 1856. The newspaper pages are large, about 12 by 16 inches.

A: Bound volumes of Frank Leslie’s illustrated weekly, the first one published in the United States, often show up at shows and can be found for sale online. Leslie (18211880) was born in England and immigrated to the United States in 1848. He was an engraver and illustrator before he became a publisher,and his many publications are wanted by collectors not only for their historical value, but also for their wood engravings and early photographs. The price your volume could sell for depends on condition of the binding and of the newspapers themselves. We have seen early volumes sell for $50 to $200. *** Q: I have had an old table cigarette lighter for about 30 years.

It was old when I got it. It appears to be silver-plate, but it’s heavy. It’s in the shape of a cornucopia, with the lighter at the top of the basket.

There’s no mark on it. Can you identify and price it?

A: The Evans Case Co. of North Attleborough, Mass., made an unmarked silver-plated cornucopia table lighter like the one you describe. Evans was in business from 1922 to 1960, but table lighters were at their height of popularity in the 1930s and ‘40s.

That’s probably when yours was made. Other silver-tone cornucopia table lighters were made in Japan after World War II, but they’re

A: Wash sets like yours were used in the days before indoor plumbing. The large pitcher was used to pour water into the basin for washing, and the smaller pitcher was used when brushing teeth. The “Yale” mark was one of several marks used between 1882 and 1925 by the Potters Co-Operative Co. of East Liverpool, Ohio. The company made hotel ware, white ware and some decorated ware.

It’s 10 inches high and decorated with applied pink roses, pale blue forget-me-nots and green leaves. Is it old and valuable?

A: George Zoltan Lefton emigrated from Hungary in 1939 and founded Lefton Co. in Chicago in 1941. The company imported pottery, porcelain, glass and other wares. George Lefton died in 1996, and the company was sold in 2001.

‘Lone Ranger’ an exciting Western with comedic pizazz

White horse? Check. Silver bullets? Check. Trusted Comanche sidekick? Well, I wouldn’t call him trusted, nor is he really a sidekick, but what the heck: Check!

Actually, this revisiting of the classic 1950s TV series has very little else to do with said TV series.

For one thing, this exciting and at times almost epic Western is really more of a comedy. It’s as if the filmmakers were initially big fans of Sergio Leone’s massive spaghetti Westerns, but they then got a look at Mel Brooks’ “Blazing Saddles” and decided to fuse those two very different entities together. Surprise! It works!

Well, most of it works.

Director Gore Verbinski, who made all of those “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies, ruffles the flow of “The Lone Ranger” by saddling it (sorry, Western reference) with a gimmick that hasn’t succeeded for others, and doesn’t for him.

The film begins in 1933 San Francisco, where a certain bridge is seen, partially built, and a young boy, wearing a black mask, visits a Wild West exhibit.

As he stares at a life-size diorama, the Noble Savage within comes alive, and proceeds to tell him the story of himself and his Texas Ranger friend, the only survivor of an ambush in 1869. The story plays out, but the film keeps returning to these two characters, just as “The Princess Bride” and “The NeverEnding Story” did.

It’s distracting, but not

The vile criminal Butch Cavendish (William Fichtner) is being brought by train to Colby, Texas, where he will hang. Chained up next to him in a baggage car is the Comanche Indian we will later find out is Tonto (Johnny Depp, who disappears into the role).

Up front, in the comfy seats, is John Reid (Armie Hammer), a district attorney who is returning home to be the new country prosecutor and to reunite with his sheriff brother Dan Reid (the chameleonic James Violent mayhem and slapstick comedy join together on the train, the bad guy gets away, Dan Reid and his Rangers (including the newly deputized John) go after them, but ride into an ambush, leaving only one man – John – alive. That would make him the Lone Ranger.

And that would open the door for John and Tonto, who comes up with the idea of the mask, to hook up to seek justice, or maybe revenge is a better word for it.

But oddly, John and Tonto really don’t like each other, and while John regularly sends verbal snipes Tonto’s way, Tonto is happy to wax philosophical in return.

Because this is a comedy, it makes sense that Tonto and Silver, the “white spirit horse” who arrives out of nowhere, are much closer. And it’s a real treat to watch Tonto and Silver do some shtick.

Other stories that feel kind of tacked on include one about Dan’s wife and son, a coming war caused by both political and business reasons, and a completely unnecessary visit to a local brothel, where Red Harrington (Helena Bonham Carter) is the madam.

Verbinski’s strongest points are that he’s able to keep the action and stunts

so wild and crazy. Depp shows off some great subtle physical comedy to go along with his mocking little side remarks. Hammer gives us a brave Lone Ranger, but his acting is a little too proper, maybe even a bit prissy.

The huge set piece of a climax features a double train chase that’s fraught with peril and heroics and, why not, a horse thundering across the top of one of the moving trains. It goes on too long and should have been tightened in the editing. But it’s also funny and exciting, and it is something we’ve never seen before.

Full recovery from stroke possible with early treatment Dear Doctor K: My father just had a lacunar stroke. I’ve never even heard of this. What can you tell me about it?

Dear Reader: The most common kind of strokes, called ischemic (iss-KEE-mick) strokes, occur when an artery supplying oxygen-rich blood to a part of the brain is blocked. This leads to the death of some brain cells. Many strokes are caused by blockages of the largest arteries in the brain.

A lacunar stroke involves smaller arteries deep in the brain that branch off the large arteries.

Because the arteries are smaller, the amount of brain tissue they feed is smaller than the amount fed by the large arteries. Still, lacunar strokes can cause significant disability. (I’ve put an illustration of the areas of the brain affected by lacunar stroke on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

The smaller arteries deep in the brain are vulnerable because they branch directly off of a high-pressure main artery. As a result, high blood pressure can directly damage the walls of these arteries. High blood pressure also can damage the walls of larger arteries and help stimulate the growth of plaques of atherosclero-

The symptoms of lacunar stroke vary depending on the part of the brain that is deprived of its blood supply. Symptoms may affect the ability to feel things, to move, to see, to speak, and one’s balance and coordination. If a person has multiple lacunar strokes, this can affect emotional behavior and lead to dementia.

Full recovery is possible with early treatment. Ideally, doctors would be able to administer a clot-dissolving medication within three hours after symptoms start.

If blood supply is interrupted for longer, there may be more brain damage. In this case, symptoms may last for many weeks or months, requiring physical rehabilitation. There may be permanent disability.

The first person I ever cared for after a lacunar stroke just noticed that his writing hand was suddenly clumsy. Fortunately, there were no other symptoms, and the clumsiness gradually

improved with physical therapy.

What probably happens when people recover from the symptoms of a stroke is that some new brain cells grow to take the places of some of the cells that were killed. We used to think that this couldn’t happen, but now research has showed us that it can.

Probably more important, other brain cells that are sitting around with not enough to do learn to take on the jobs of the brain cells that were killed by the stroke.

Your father must control his risk factors to prevent another stroke. He will probably need to take a daily aspirin or other blood-thinning medication. He should control his blood pressure and heart disease with lifestyle changes and medication.

Exercising regularly, eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, and avoiding saturated fats and cholesterol will help. If he smokes, he should quit. If he has diabetes, he should control his blood sugar.

Dr. Wallace: A group of guys I hang around with are starting to get involved in getting high by sniffing gasoline. We are all 14. They buy a gallon of gasoline. Then they pour it onto towels and loosely wrap the towels around their heads and breathe in the fumes.

They are trying to get me to sniff with them. They keep telling me that it’s safe, but I have my doubts. Do you have any information on gasoline sniffing? – Nameless, Miami, Fla. Dear Nameless: Common sense should alert you to the fact that sniffing gasoline can be a dangerous experience.

According to the National Council on Drug Prevention, gasoline sniffing can cause severe headaches, abdominal cramps, periods of disorientation, and it can also damage the brain, nervous system, liver and kidneys.

In some cases, the gasoline sniffer has died from an overdose of fumes. Make a concerted effort to find some new friends!

I am a wife who would love to have sex more often, but I’m TIRED! I work full-time and do most of the household chores.

So, a male bridge declarer is a committee. In this deal, how should the committee play in three no-trump after West leads the heart jack?

Most authorities recommend not using Stayman when responder has 4-3-3-3 distribution with a four-card major. And that will be right most of the time.

However, when there is a 4-4 fit and opener has 4-4-3-2 distribution, the suit in which the partnership has only five cards could prove to be a fatal weakness. (Note that in this deal four spades has no chance, but if West had a second spade, it would be makable.)

South starts with eight top tricks: one spade, three hearts, two diamonds and two clubs. His order of business is to collect a second spade trick. And there is a guaranteed line of play. After taking the first trick, declarer should cash his spade ace. Here, the queen drops from West, so South continues with a spade to dummy’s jack. But if the ace collects only low cards, declarer still plays another spade and must eventually establish that second winner.

Note that initially playing a spade to the 10 is fatal here. The tempting finesse must be deleted from the agenda.

Finally, here is another question: Suppose South needs three spade tricks. What should he do?

Now it is correct to play low to the 10 on the first round. And if it loses to the queen or king, South next cashes his ace. He has a paltry 37 percent chance of success.
