Lifeguards honored for saving teen KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Former Batavia High School quarterback Noel Gaspari was one of four Quarry Beach lifeguards honored by the Batavia Park District for the rescue of a 17-year-old patron.

Gaspari, along with Marquise Jenkins, Austin Lewis and John Robinson, successfully revived the swimmer and arranged for professional medical attention during an incident that occurred at Quarry Beach in June.

“I’m so proud of how the four guards put their countless hours of training into action,” Allison Niemela, executive director of the Batavia Park District, said in a statement. “I commend them on their quick thinking and heroic efforts to save this individual’s life.”

Local experts share tips to improve holiday grilling

o prepare for one of the biggest grilling days of the year, Ream’s Elburn Market was prepared to go through about 1,000 pounds of beef patties and about 1,000 pounds of bratwurst.

With so many people planning to fire up the grill during the Fourth of July holiday, seasoned grillers offered some tips on the best way to cook hamburgers, brats, ribs and more on the grill, and offered advice on the best cuts of meats to use.

Hamburgers At Blue Goose Market in St. Charles, outdoor grillers serve hundreds of brats, hamburgers and rib-eye steaks during lunch time Fridays and Saturdays.

Kyle Krahenbuhl, a Blue Goose employee who regularly grills out in front of the store on weekends, said his best advice when it comes to grilling hamburgers is to make sure they cook as evenly as possible.

“I usually do four minutes a side for medium burgers,” he said.

Dale Instefjord, who also regularly grills out at Blue Goose, said he prefers chuck burgers that are 85 percent meat and 15 percent fat. He said those types of burgers produce a lot of flavor and are still juicy when they come off the grill.

Pat Falcone, who owns Josef’s Elegante Meats & Deli in Geneva with his wife, Nanette, said most people stop in during this time of year to buy their stuffed jumbo burgers, and selections include a bacon, onion and cheddar burger, a bleu cheese burger, a Tuscan burger and a jala-

Sliders also have become especially popular in recent years.

Randy Ream, who owns Ream’s Elburn Market in Elburn with his wife, Janelle, said when it comes to hamburgers, he likes to use an

electric thermometer. He said he knows the burgers are done when they hit 165 degrees.

“Make sure your grill isn’t too hot. Go with a medium low heat,” he said.

Bratwurst and sausages Randy Ream suggests soaking sausages in a little

salt water for about 10 minutes before putting them on the grill. Janelle Ream said one tip she always tells customers is that they do not recommend boiling the brats first.

“You’re going to boil some of the flavor out of the brats,” she said. “If you need to, start them in the microwave and finish them on the grill. Then simmer them with onions and beer after the grill.”

Instefjord from Blue Goose, on the other hand, said boiling the brats first does help cut down on the cooking time and ensures that the brat is fully cooked.

Falcone said high-quality bratwurst or sausage will not shrink on the grill. It will be the same size before and af-

ter. His advice when it comes to grilling them is to keep turning them.

Steaks and ribs When it comes to steak, Falcone said he prefers a bone-in cut of meat, such as a strip steak or a porterhouse.

He said he often reminds people to not sear one side of the steak before flipping it over.

Instead, cook it for a couple of minutes on each side and keep turning it. He suggests coating the steak with some extra virgin olive oil beforehand.

One cut of steak that’s gaining popularity is the hanger steak, which Falcone said has only been on the

Aldermen to debate billboards on city land

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Aldermen are exploring the idea of allowing a company to install a digital LED billboard on city-owned property along Kirk Road.

Lamar Advertising Company wants to install an off-premises billboard in front of a city water storage tank along North Kirk Road.

The city’s zoning code cur-

rently prohibits off-site billboards.

Batavia Community Development Director Scott Buening said he is opposed to changing the zoning code to allow the proposed billboard.

He said the sign could be distracting to motorists.

“We are trying to beautify Kirk Road,” Buening said.

The Illinois Youth Recreation Corps was established to make grants available to local governments and nonprofit entities to pay youth operating and instructing in recreational and conservation programs in July and August.

“This is a great opportunity for our village, and I look forward to the partner-

ship with our village, Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the youth of our community,” North Aurora Village President Dale Berman said in a statement.

The program is open to youths ages 14 to 18. To apply, submit an application to the village of North Aurora by 4 p.m. July 10.

SUGAR GROVE – The Sugar Grove Police Department advised that it received a report of solicitors in the Black Walnut Trails area that did not have proper permits.

Police said the solicitors were stopped and no longer were in the area. Police wanted to remind residents that solicitors must have a permit issued by the village to approach a household in Sugar Grove. Residents, they say, have a right to ask to see the permit. If a permit is not displayed, residents are urged to call 911.

On Wednesday, the Illinois House passed House Bill 226, 954-22, with one not voting, and the Illinois Senate passed the measure, 43-9, with seven not voting.

State Rep. Ed Sullivan, R-Mundelein, the bill’s chief co-sponsor, supported voting rights for younger people as part of their civic education, and a means of getting them more civically engaged.

Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham agreed.

“Any time we can get young people interested in voting – that is good. And I’m in favor of it,” Cunningham said. “We

can use juniors in high school as election judges, so this is just added on to that. Let’s give kids who are old enough a chance to register, and hopefully they’ll get in the habit of voting at that age.”

Cunningham said there were still ambiguities in the bill that would need some work, but for the moment, it is geared for an election cycle with a primary race.

Director of Elections Suzanne Fahnestock said the clerk’s office will be preparing for having more voters during the 2014 election cycle.

State Sens. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove, and Karen McConnaughay, R-St. Charles, both voted no; Assistant Senate Republican Leader Kirk Dillard, R-Hinsdale, voted yes.

State Reps. Tim Schmitz, R-Batavia, and Minority Leader Tom Cross, R-Oswego, also voted no; Kay Hatcher,

Fortner said he supported the measure because it was consistent with court rulings on the state’s election cycles.

“We can think of the primary election and the general election as part of the same cycle, and Illinois courts have held that as well,” Fortner said.

The Illinois Supreme Court decided in a case on party switching that a person who voted one way in a primary could not be added to anoth-

er party’s slate in the general election, Fortner said. In another case, the court ruled that someone who voted in a township election could run the next year as a member of the opposite party because they were separate elections.

Hatcher said her choice not to vote either way was a reflection of her concern about voting standards: That if a 17-year-old can vote in a primary, then voting at 18 is not so special anymore.

“In a democracy, you want to make sure that it’s participatory,” Hatcher said. “I’m beginning to be concerned about more and more standards being diluted to the point where it [voting] becomes no more special than going to the grocery store.”

In 1972, the 26th Amendment to the Constitution lowered the nation’s voting age from 21 to 18.

CRYSTAL LAKE – An SUV rolled over along Route 176 on Wednesday after the driver dozed off at the wheel.

Bob Beith, 70, of Elburn was traveling east on Route 176 in Crystal Lake when he said he fell asleep, hit a tree and flipped his Ford Explorer. Beith was able to crawl out the driver’s-side window.

He escaped with only minor scratches on his arms.

“I’m just happy I didn’t hit anyone head-on,” he said.

The vehicle was towed just before noon Wednesday, and traffic was moving steadily around the crash site.

He said Dustin’s death devastated the community as well as the family, and he said he’ll forever be thankful for the help he received.

Dave Villarreal said the Geneva football program “took us in and made us a part of their family.” He said it was natural to establish a scholarship fund, and he’s glad if the concert leads people to remember Dustin. He said hundreds attend the show every year.

“We wanted to make something good out of a tough situation,” he said.

District 303 artwork on display KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Artwork from students in St. Charles School District 303 will be on display throughout July at the St. Charles Public Library, 1 S. Sixth Ave., St. Charles.

The library will host “Imagination,” the district’s student art show, according to a news release. The library has hosted the event for more than 25 years. The show includes artwork created by students in elementary school through high school.

An open house, showcasing the student artists, will take place from 2 to 3 p.m.

July 13 in the library’s Huntley Meeting Room.

Elementary artwork featured in the show is a reflection of a new teaching approach called TAB (teaching for artistic behavior), the release stated.

“Artwork from grades K-12 is student centered and reflects 21st century learning skills,” said Rebecca Hubbs, an art teacher at Davis Primary and Richmond Intermediate schools. “Important components of arts education in the classroom allow for students to develop critical

ST. CHARLES – The new Limani Port of Greece restaurant is looking to put a fresh face on Greek food in St. Charles.

The restaurant opened in May after taking over the former Odyssey restaurant at 3755 E. Main St. in St. Charles. That restaurant also served Greek food.

“We changed everything to a fresh menu,” said Chris Lambropoulos, son of Limani restaurant owner Peter Lambropoulos. “We prepare items every day.”

His father was born in Greece and has lived in the United States for 40 years.

“We’re cooking our heritage food,” Chris Lambropoulos said.

That includes such items as Grecian pork chops and chicken piccata, as well as fish and pasta dishes and sandwiches. Peter Lambropoulos has past restaurant experience.

“He was part owner of

Sally’s Pancake House in Chicago, and seven to eight years ago, he owned West Side Gyros in Yorkville,” Chris Lambropoulos said.

The new restaurant is seeing a growing number of customers.

“We are seeing a lot more return customers,” he said.

Moving into an existing restaurant helped Limani to get up and operating.

“The building was in beautiful shape,” he said.

“Everything was here for us.”

He is upbeat about the ongoing construction project on East Main Street, near the restaurant.

“It’s been getting better,” he said. “The construction is one of the biggest complaints we hear about. There’s not much we can do.”

Police: Man pushes woman at pool, charged with battery

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A verbal altercation at a St. Charles pool last week turned physical, resulting in battery charges for a St. Charles man who, police say, pushed a woman to the ground twice and was later seen wielding a knife.

St. Charles police were dispatched to the pool area of the St. Charles Place Apartments in the 100 block of North 15th Street for a fight June 27. Police later charged David John Teafoe, 20, of

the 100 block of North 15th Street, St. Charles, with battery.

According to police reports, the female victim was at the pool with her children when Teafoe became belligerent, yelling foul language at the pool attendant and other bystanders. When the woman asked Teafoe not to use that kind of language in front of her children, an argument ensued in the parking lot outside the pool area.

Police reported that Teafoe put his hands on the victim’s shoulders and pushed her with enough force to

knock her to the ground.

When the woman got up, Teafoe reportedly knocked her to the ground again.

After the fight, Teafoe went into an apartment and came out holding “a large shiny knife,” according to reports. The victim said she did not see Teafoe holding a knife during the altercation.

She told police that he did not come toward her with the knife and she did not feel threatened.

Teafoe told police that he was carrying the knife for protection from other people at the pool, police reported.

It appeared to be stripped of all mechanical parts, but there is no indication that it was stolen.

• Efran Romero-Salinas, 43, of the 30W000 block of May Street, West Chicago, was charged Thursday, June 27, with driving without a valid license.

• David Lloyd Osborne, 37, of the 1300 block of South 14th Street, St. Charles, was charged Wednesday, June 26, with criminal damage to property after breaking a chair in a St. Charles Police Department interview room. He had been using the chair to try to pry the door open, according to police reports.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A judge on Wednesday allowed a 22-yearold Geneva man to go into an addiction treatment facility rather than sending him to jail or increasing his bond for being charged with additional felonies while a previous felony charge was pending.

Kane County Circuit Judge John Barsanti said Tyler E. White, 22, could be taken immediately to a treatment facility. But Barsanti also ordered that White’s attorney, Vincent Solano, report to him every week with some proof from the facility

that White was participating in the program.

Barsanti set Aug. 8 as a status date for the attorney to appear in court, but expected that White would still be in a facility.

White was charged June 10 with felony Tyler E. possession of White heroin while at Starbucks, 229 W. State St. in Geneva.

He was also charged with felony obstruction of justice for allegedly trying to hide evidence and misdemeanor possession of a hypodermic

syringe and drug paraphernalia.

White had another felony pending against him, as he was charged April 26 with the possession and manufacture of ecstasy pills.

Assistant State’s Attorney Scott Schwertley sought to revoke White’s earlier bond and increase the bail to $150,000.

White’s bail on the first offense was set at $50,000, and he posted 10 percent, or $5,000, to be released. On the second offense, White’s bail was set at $75,000, and he posted $7,500 bond, or 10 percent, Schwertley said.

“Counsel is asking for treatment,” Schwertley said.

“I have no objection if the court will increase his bail [and] have him in a lockeddown facility.”

Solano asked that Barsanti withhold judgment on the state’s request while White gets treatment.

“Sitting in jail will not help to treat his addiction,” Solano said. “He’ll be clean, but it won’t treat his addiction.”

Schwertley said in other cases, he has seen the court increase bail but allow a defendant to go to treatment, then come back into custody once it is completed.

Barsanti said he would make White’s surrender after his treatment a condition of

his bond and make a decision later on whether to increase the bail.

The heroin-related felony charges against White carry a penalty of one to three years in prison and a fine of up to $25,000 each. The misdemeanors have a penalty of up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $2,500.

The felony charge of possession of ecstasy is punishable by four to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $25,000.

The charge of manufacturing or delivering ecstasy is a more serious felony, punishable by six to 30 years in prison and a fine up to $25,000.

“After the show, motorists leaving the event area or just driving through Batavia on the West Side of the city will experience heavy traffic delays,” according to a news release from the Batavia Police Department.

The roads that will be the most affected will be Randall

Fundraiser to help STC firefighter with cancer

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – St. Charles firefighters are helping raise money for a 10-year veteran of the St. Charles Fire Department who has been diagnosed with cancer.

Lt. Darin Peterson is helping organize the fundraiser for fellow firefighter paramedic Don Fruland, who was diagnosed about three months ago with Stage IV nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

“Basically, Don Fruland it started as a bloody nose that wouldn’t stop,” Peterson said.

After an MRI, doctors found a cancerous tumor growing in Fruland’s sinuses.

Because this form of cancer is rare, Peterson said many of Fruland’s treatments are experimental and therefore very expensive.

“Originally when [doctors] looked at it, they hadn’t seen anything like it,” Peterson said. “It was a real grim

To help offset Fruland’s medical costs, a fundraiser is set for 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge, 42W635 Ke De Ka Road, Sugar Grove.

Auctions and raffles are planned, as well as live entertainment by the band 1 Sam 10. Peterson said the fundraiser will be a family-oriented event with an inflatable moon jump, firetruck displays and a helicopter landing at 2 p.m.

More than 70 items have

been donated for the auction, including hotel packages, tickets to see the 2014 Chicago Bulls from a skybox and a Lake Michigan fishing charter boat trip.

Fruland, 43, lives in Somonauk with his wife, Katy, and his two children, Donny, 10, and David, 5. Peterson said firefighters have rallied behind Fruland since they found out about his diagnosis.

He said because Fruland has used up most of his sick leave, some firefighters have voluntarily given their vacation days to Fruland.

“He’s truly what everyone on the fire department would consider a brother,” Peterson said, adding the city of St. Charles has been supportive of Fruland. “He’d give the shirt off his back to help somebody.”

County touts perfect transparency score KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com Kane County on Wednesday touted praise it received for its website, pointing to a recent item from the Illinois Policy Institute that identified it as the only county website in the state to score 100 percent for transparency.

According to the article, an audit revealed that Kane was one of three in Illinois to score 90 percent or higher, joining Will (95.4 percent) and DuPage (90.8 percent), a county news release said.

“We are very proud to be recognized for our level of commitment to transparency,” Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said in the release. “Everyone at

Kane County has and continues to work very hard to make sure that we have as accurate and useful information available on our website as we can.”

The Illinois Policy Institute measured categories such as posting calendars and agendas before meetings and posting instructions on how to file a Freedom of Information Act request. The checklist recommended that counties post information such as budgets, audits, expenditures, employee compensation, contracts, lobbying and tax information.

The article said most Illinois counties scored low on the audit, noting that 22 counties do not even have a website. The average score was listed as 25.7 out of a possible 100.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com Kane County Coroner Rob Russell on Wednesday announced a new, proactive mass-casualty preparedness partnership with the Kane County Health Department, according to a news release.

“Because of this partnership, Kane County residents

development of emergency-ready public health departments that are flexible and adaptable. Part of this agreement deals with fatality management, which is the responsibility of the coroner’s office, the release stated.

Russell met with Kane County Health Department and Emergency Management officials in hopes of finding

relevant areas of partnership.

As a result, the coroner’s office was awarded $2,500 to purchase supplies for responder safety.

“We were able to purchase masks, autopsy equipment and other safety equipment for each of the coroner’s office responders,” Russell said in the release.

Independence Day or Fourth of July?

By BRIAN PALMER Slate Americans celebrate their independence from England today.

If you want to be truly authentic while barbecuing and watching the fireworks, should you refer to the holiday as “the Fourth of July” or “Independence Day?” “Independence Day,” or even “Independent Day.” When 18th century state legislatures planned the first July 4 observances, they didn’t bother to give the day a proper name.

“Independence Day,” however, had slightly more currency than “Fourth of July” in contemporary writings.

A Royall Tyler poem dating to the late 18th or early 19th century, for example, commands Americans to “squeak the fife and beat the drum, independence day is come!”

Phrases for national holiday up for debate Tyler also refers to the holiday as “Independent Day,” which was a widely used alternative.

The phrase “Fourth of July” was in use by the end of the 18th century, but not quite as often.

While traveling through Connecticut in 1807 and 1808, early American chronicler E d w a r d A u g u s t u s K e n dall saw citizens assembling on a knoll to celebrate “the Fourth of July, or Independent or Independence Day.” “Fourth of July” overtook both “Independence Day” and “Independent Day” in newspaper articles and toasts to George Washington during the 19th century. In an article for New England magazine in 1890, historian Edward Hale wrote, “in my boyhood, the event ... was called independence day

Congress established the first federal holidays in 1870: “the first day of January, commonly called New Year’s day, the fourth day of July, the twenty-fifth day of December, commonly called Christmas day, and any day appointed or recommended by the President of the United States as a day of public fast or thanksgiving.”

The decision to include common names for New Year’s Day and Christmas, but not Independence Day, indicates how rare the phrase had become.

In 1938, Congress granted pay to federal employees on holidays, listing all by name, including Fourth of July, rather than Independence Day. As many history buffs know, there’s some issue

about the rise of the phrase “Fourth of July” since the date itself has little significance.

Congress approved a declaration of independence on July 2, 1776, and John Adams expected that to be the most important date in American history.

The official Declaration, however, was approved two days later by a committee.

The first printed copies read “In Congress, July 4, 1776.”

Since that broadsheet was tacked up in cities all over the nation, the date stuck.

The phrase Independence Day has experienced a slight bump over the past 20 years, appearing approximately as often in books as July Fourth and Fourth of July combined.

The current U.S. Code uses both names for the holiday.

People should be proud to say Pledge of Allegiance If you haven’t noticed from my last couple of columns or my boost in happiness recently, I’m all graduated and out of school.

Many of the things that I didn’t like about high school are blissfully in my past.

But there’s a certain group of people from high school and a certain mentality that I don’t think I’ll ever shake from my mind. These people somehow thought that saying the Pledge of Allegiance was below them, and they refused to say the pledge.

In school, we were asked to stand up and say the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag near the beginning of every day. We stood up, recited the pledge and sat back down.

It took about 20 seconds for the whole thing. And yet, in some classes, there would always be some people that

Now, I understand anyone with any sort of disability being unable to stand. But even kids who couldn’t stand still recited the words.

How someone in the United States of America could refuse to say our pledge baffles me.

There are two main reasons people refuse to say the pledge: church and state.

The people who refuse for the purpose of church have one thing going for them. The phrase “under God” is their only argument against the pledge. They, due to religious or nonreligious beliefs, don’t want to say that part. Fine,

then skip that part. Just say “one nation.” I know plenty of patriotic people with no religious affiliation who skip “under God.” For the people who refuse under the idea of state, they are saying that they are not proud to be an American. Well, the fix for that is simple. Send these people to North Korea for a few months. Or China. Maybe even Romania. Libya. Guatemala. Mexico. Anywhere other than here, anywhere other than the land of the free. Even though our government has made mistakes in the past and is currently ensnared in scandals, the United States still is a great country, and I truly think people should be proud of that.

this. I think that my answer comes from two things, both of which are rooted in my family.

My mother was born in Sheboygan, Wis., to a factory worker and a secretary.

Mommy got into college, graduated with honors, began working and climbing the corporate ladder. She was a partner at Ernst & Young for five years, quitting in 1999 so that my sister and I could join the Girl Scouts. She now teaches at NIU, with a husband, two kids, two cats and a house in the suburbs. To me, my mother is the American dream. The country that allowed her to do these things, that supported her growth, is the one that I am proud of.

The other reason is the Armed Forces. Four members of my family have served in the military.

Grandpa Phelan was in the Coast Guard in World War II; Grandpa Jerry was in the Army Reserves for 25 years; Uncle Dave was in the Navy; and my cousin Blaze was a Marine. I love these people. They knew the risks, and they still fought for us.

They could have died. They watched friends fall and kept going. I for one cannot even imagine the dedication and sacrifice that requires.

All for what? For a bunch of teenagers who are too lazy to stand up for 15 seconds and say they’re proud to be an American?

Fireworks! Veterans! Honor, thanksgiving, sorrow, pain, bitterness, hostility, joy – so many choices and emotions represent us right now.

We’ve recently celebrated our veterans and our flag, and we now reflect on our heritage.

We love to celebrate the Fourth of July with picnics, parades and fireworks. But do we remember why we are celebrating? Looking back to 1776, where would we be had there not been the revolution? Do we recall our history, our nation’s heritage or do we understand the significance of our Constitution?

The founders of our country came from a varied background. Some were wealthy land owners, others farmed the land.

Some were leaders, others followed.

All demonstrated bravery when they fixed their name on a document declaring their freedom. They didn’t hide in the shadows. They proclaimed their beliefs and boldly stood behind their signatures. Their heroic actions speak to each of us today, reminding us to stand up for freedom.

True freedom is discussed in God’s word.

Remember Jesus himself died to free us from bondage. All who have experienced addiction or rejection, overpowering grief, anger or fear know how it feels to live on the other side. Do you want to be free? Jesus is the truth that sets us free. Do we cling to Jesus and choose to follow in His footsteps?

Trust is an essential choice. When we live a life of prayer, knowing we have a faithful creator, we discover that we are free. Free to be the unique and loving people of God’s design.

Instead of trying hard to follow a religion, we enjoy an amazing, mutual relationship with our Lord. We live our days in His hope as we trust and praise Him. As our Founding Fathers opened the door to our independence, Jesus opened the way to our freedom. Speak up for America. Choose to be thankful. Pray. Celebrate life. Pass on hope and encourage others. Love and forgive.

Trust God as you celebrate freedom, not only on this Fourth of July, but all year long.

Writer draws inspiration from St. Charles for latest novel

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – For some St. Charles residents, the setting of Lynn Kear’s latest crime fiction novel might feel eerily familiar.

That’s because the fictional city in Kear’s novel, “Relative Innocence,” is loosely based on St. Charles, where Kear lived for about 20 years. She graduated from St. Charles High School in 1975, and her third novel hit bookshelves in February and is available online.

The story takes place in a small Illinois suburb called St. James, a fictional city that, much like St. Charles, also is situated on the banks of a river. It follows a spree killer’s son, a suspected serial killer’s daughter and an attorney who befriends them. Kear said she references St. Charles street names, the cold northern Illinois weather and the river.

“The river plays a huge part,” she said, noting that it’s called the St. James River in her novel. “When you grow up in that area, the river is huge.

It’s a big part of life.”

Kear said her previous novel, “Tighter Tighter,” also was based on a city much like St. Charles. Her first novel, “Murder in a Buckhead Garden,” is based on Atlanta. Kear lived in St. Charles from the late 1960s to the early 1980s and now lives in Stone Mountain, Ga. Kear – a novelist, playwright and biographer – earned degrees from Aurora College and Northern Illinois University.

She earned her Ph.D. while living in Georgia and spent almost 25 years teaching various courses, such as creative writing, film, history and public speaking, at colleges and universities. But she credits a lot of her success to the education she received while growing up in St. Charles.

“I do want to say that I had great teachers at St. Charles High School. I honestly think that my success, whatever that has been, has been largely because of that,” she said. “In

teaching, I’ve been around people without a good education, and I’m so happy to have had the opportunity to attend school in District 303.”

Kear has written a few biographies, as well as two books on reincarnation, but her novels have centered on crime fiction.

She said actual crimes sometimes inspire the plots of her novels. She noted that she drew her inspiration for “Relative Innocence” from a crime that was committed in Athens, Ga., and also is loosely based on the

Drew Peterson case in Chicago.

Peterson is a former police officer who was convicted in February of killing his ex-wife.

“I wondered, what would it be like to be the child of somebody accused of that?” Kear said. “There’s something about crime fiction that is very tantalizing for writers, and I think for readers.”

at Old Town in the ’80s. I liked music, like a lot of young people, and friends of mine were in different bands, and they were going to be rock stars and stuff.

I always liked the sound of acoustic instruments, and a friend of mine invited me to join her for a class at Old Town. I liked being there, and I thought, “Maybe I can get good enough and teach here one day.”

I had actually started some classes out here in the suburbs, and was teaching privately in my home apartment. I was trying to gain experience to ask for a teaching job at Old Town, but as it turned out, they called me.

I was lucky enough to get in right when the school was in the beginning of its reemergence. So, I was able

Mark Dvorak: I like to mix it up. I’ll do some originals, but I love old pop songs, like the things that Fats Waller used to play, and Gershwin

And I’ll bring my banjo along to do some traditional banjo tunes.

ES: You’ve taught at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago for more than 25

in all of my classes is that music is fun, music is for fun.

It’s fun to play with others and sing with others. It’s such a basic human activity.

I try to keep everybody’s feet on the ground.

ES: How did you get involved in folk music in the first place?

MD: I like the term folk.

It’s a very fuzzy term, and that’s one of the things I like about it.

I love traditional songs, but I also love new things too. When I was a kid, John Denver, Peter, Paul and Mary, and Gordon Lightfoot were on the radio.

Bob Dylan was one of my favorites, and still [is] one

of my favorites. I discovered Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie and Lead Belly, and I felt like I was kind of home, and that music has always been the kind of thing I return to.

I’m very comfortable with this music as an avenue for the way of expressing myself. What I loved about folk music was the narrative, the inherent storytelling of it.

I feel close to it. A potter works with clay and a painter works with oils and watercolors. I like to work with acoustic instruments.

ES: You’ve been called “Chicago’s official troubadour.” Do you take that as an honor?

MD: I sure do. There was a guy who was a mentor to me, Fred Holstein, that was his nickname too, and before him, Winfred “Win” Stracke, the founder of Old Town.

I feel connected to artists with an enduring spirit. I try to live up to it.

Senior’s season at Wheaton Academy ‘up in the air’

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Wisconsin enticed Grant Stoneman as a potential college landing spot when he was in the middle of a high school soccer transfer year.

A St. Charles resident who began his prep career at Burlington Central before shifting to Wheaton Academy, Stoneman attended a winter and summer camp in Madison, Wis., during the 2011-12 school year.

He took a campus visit in February, liked what he saw, then returned at the beginning of June “just to confirm what I saw the first time, see if anything was new.”

When nothing budged with the Badgers, Stoneman knew everything he needed to make a verbal commitment Tuesday, selecting Wisconsin over a group of suitors that included Loyola Chicago, Illinois-Chicago, Butler and Michigan State.

“Definitely relieved,” Stoneman said.

“The days leading up to my decision were definitely stressful, not knowing what to do, but I feel confident in my decision.”

Stoneman played with equal assuredness as a junior, earning Suburban Christian Conference player of the year honors after tallying 29 goals and 18 assists in 29 matches. The Warriors placed fourth in Class 2A with Stoneman as their center midfielder.

Two seasons earlier, he played center-back for BC’s fourth-place 2A team. He transferred at the end of the school year, citing his faith and academics.

Stoneman’s older sister, Maddie, a BC alumna now studying business at Wisconsin, lauded similar characteristics in her brother’s new college.

“I’ve heard from multiple people and just from reading books or the Internet that it’s not only athletics, but also academics,” said Grant Stoneman, who has not yet pondered a possible major.

Stoneman said it’s “up in the air” whether he’ll play his senior season at Wheaton Academy or compete for a year-round exposure club team such as Schaumburg-based Sockers FC. No matter his decision, he knows the biggest thing he’ll have to hone as he prepares to enter the Big Ten, likely as a center-back.

“Just getting more fit for the college game and the speed of play, soccer in general,” he said.

Johnson’s father began as police chief of La Grande, Ore., before the family relocated to his parents’ native Georgia when Johnson was just starting grade school.

Johnson’s grandfather and a few cousins served in the Army, although none were what Johnson called “career guys.”

Often spotted wearing a “USMC” T-shirt before or after games, Johnson has not sensed any budding military interest in his 8-year-old son, Will, who has been a clubhouse fixture since school let out.

“On this side of it, being a coach and a manager, you can tell the guys that have that background in them.

Their parents were military or they grew up in that household that had that military, that discipline,” Johnson said. “The way they dress, the way they act, the way they talk, the way they handle themselves. So that says something right there about the military and what they do and how they create good people and hard-working people and instill those values. I can’t say enough good things about it.”

GENEVA – Cougars manager Mark Johnson spent parts of eight Major League seasons in dugouts across North America.

Had it not been for his ability to hit and call baseball games, the former catcher would have preferred the vantage point of a foxhole.

“Oh, yeah. I’d have went in the Marine Corps,” Johnson said. “My dad was a Marine and then chief of police, so he had a lot of discipline in the house and all that. So I kind of grew up wanting to go in the Marine Corps, and baseball kind of took over. It was definitely on my list. I even thought about, even if I got done playing, I’d go enlist, you know. But baseball has been my fate.”

Johnson had a hunch about his future when the White Sox selected him near the end of the first round of the 1994 Major League Baseball FirstYear Player Draft. The 26th overall pick out of Warner Robins (Ga.) High School signed two months before his 19th birthday.

That same summer, countless contemporaries who were weeks removed from receiving their high school diplomas joined the Marines, Army, Navy and Air Force.

Until his midteens, when coaches and scouts spotted Johnson’s ability and foretold of his chances to play baseball for a living, Johnson thought he might be a military man himself.

His father, George, had served in the Marines, and just missed duty in Vietnam.

Johnson’s older brother, Jeff, enlisted in the Corps out of high school.

He served in Operation Desert Storm but saw little combat.

“By the time I was a junior in high school, I mean, I knew I was going to get drafted. I knew I was going to get drafted high and I didn’t think about [enlisting] anymore,” Johnson said.

“Well, I shouldn’t say that. I did. I still do, but you know, I think it’s an honor

Wimbledon maintains Cougars tie game twice, lose to Wis. longstanding tradition TIMBER RATTLERS 4, COUGARS 2

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE GRAND CHUTE, Wis. – The Kane County Cougars tied the game twice but were unable to get over the hump against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in a 4-2 loss at Fox Cities Stadium on Wednesday night.

Wisconsin left fielder Victor Roache was a home run shy of the cycle and drove in a pair of runs for the Timber Rattlers (34-44 overall, 5-8 second half). Roache drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning with an RBI triple against Cougars (32-47, 2-11) starter Michael Heesch, who took the loss to fall to 3-7.

Dan Vogelbach drove in two runs and went 3 for 4 in the losing effort. The Cougars lost four of five games in the series.

The Cougars bullpen was stout in the loss. Both Armando Rivero and Stephen Perakslis turned in identical lines.

They each worked one scoreless inning, did not walk a batter, struck out one and gave up a base hit.

The Cougars will return to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark at 6:30 p.m. today for the opener of a five-game series against Quad Cities. Felix Pena (22) will start for the Cougars against righty Juan Minaya (1-1).

But when the Swiss master strode onto Wimbledon’s Center Court this year wearing orange-soled sneakers, that was a step too far – even for a seven-time champion.

So at the conclusion of his first-round match, Federer was asked to change his footwear.

Tennis has its rules. And nowhere are those rules held in higher regard than at the All England club, host of Wimbledon, where players are required to dress “almost entirely in white,” and the standards of decorum for competitor and spectator alike are a notch above.

At Wimbledon, “gentlemen’s” and “ladies’ “ matches are contested, rather than men’s and women’s.

Ballboys and ballgirls present themselves for inspec-

tion at 10 a.m. daily, standing shoulder to shoulder, posture erect and uniforms spotless, like an extended Von Trapp family.

It’s all part of what makes the oldest, most revered tournament in tennis a singular experience.

But as the sport’s popularity wanes in the United States, overtaken by the NBA, hockey and auto racing, according to a recent Harris Poll, it begs the question: Is tennis too staid for its own good?

Murphy Jensen felt so two decades ago and, with elder brother and doubles partner, Luke, launched a two-man campaign to ramp up the

sport’s cool quotient. With their 1993 French Open doubles title conferring credibility, they preached so-called “rock-‘n’-roll tennis” everywhere they went. They competed in soccer jerseys with their names on the back at the U.S. Open, once rode motorcycles onto court before a match and granted interviews to anyone who’d listen.

Now 44 and coach of the Washington Kastles, Murphy Jensen still feels tennis could do far more to connect with fans. For starters, he thinks its stars should be more accessible.

“Racecar drivers about to go 200 miles an hour give dynamite interviews just before getting in their cars,” Jensen notes.

He wonders why tennis doesn’t create an all-star match. Or why not bring back greats such as Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras to judge a skills competition ?

“You can never stop trying to make the sport fun and colorful,” Jensen says.

– A month ago, Aaron Hernandez was the man at the center of memories and a life illuminated by stadium lights.

His past included a home town that adored him, the images of the tall kid wearing a maroon No. 15 jersey at his high school before he played at the University of Florida and became a star with the New England Patriots.

He was rich and famous, and at age 23, an expensive car, a massive home and a new contract worth nearly $40 million were already his.

Now, Hernandez wears a dark green prison uniform, inmate No. 174954 here at the Bristol County House of Corrections, and adjusts to a new life in isolation after being charged last week with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Odin Lloyd, a former acquaintance.

His home, at least for the foreseeable future, is a 10-foot-by-7-foot cell adorned only with a bunk bed frame,

CHICAGO – Exactly one year after getting an MRI on his right shoulder, White Sox reliever Jesse Crain found himself needing another one after experiencing discomfort in the same shoulder.

An MRI on Wednesday revealed Crain has a right shoulder strain, and the Sox subsequently put the 31-year-old right hander on the 15-day dis- Jesse Crain abled list. Crain said he first felt shoulder tightness when playing catch before Tuesday’s game, and it persisted Paul Konerko when warming up during the seventh inning.

Manager Robin Ventura said it was better to be safe than sorry with Crain, and putting him on the DL allows him to properly rest and get healthy.

“Every game I go in, every pitch is important, so I just think it finally took its toll on me and I just got it strained and, hopefully, I can be back in two weeks,” Crain said. “… It’s disappointing for the team, obviously, and disappointing for me, but I can’t control what’s going to happen.”

The Sox recalled third baseman Brent Morel and purchased the contract of lefthander David Purcey from Triple-A Charlotte. Ventura hopes Crain and Konerko will be ready to play after the AllStar break.

“I think [Konerko] would admit it, you let yourself think you’re feeling pretty good, you go in the cage and swing, and it’s just different,” Ventura said. “The adrenaline sometimes helps you because you’re going to go play in the game and you think it’s going to be better and it doesn’t. It kind of works against you because all of the progress that you’ve made in those four days, you lose once you get in there and start swinging.”

Dunn on a roll: As injuries and underperformance plague the Sox’s lineup, designated hitter Adam Dunn has turned around his early season struggles.

In 28 games since June 1, Dunn is hitting .273 with 10 home runs and 26 RBIs. Lately, Dunn has been one of the only consistent players in the lineup. Entering Wednesday’s game, Dunn’s average sat at .199, up from .154 at the end of May. Dunn

‘The Look of Love:’ A sad story that bares all

By MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN The Washington Post Lust shares the stage with love in “The Look of Love,” Michael Winterbottom’s snappy and mildly comedic biographical drama about Paul Raymond, a businessman who made history by opening Britain’s first strip club in 1958. Money is also very much in the spotlight. Raymond – a small-time nightclub performer with a mind-reading act who went on to become a successful real estate magnate and publisher of girlie magazines – was, by 1992, Britain’s wealthiest man.

Maybe he really was a mind-reader.

“People liked looking at pretty girls, and liked it even more if they had no clothes on,” deadpans the movie’s subject, played by Steve Coogan.

Known as a comedian, Coogan turns in a fine dramatic performance in a role that calls for as much actual acting as wisecracking. If his character – England’s answer to Hugh Hefner – comes across as glib at times, allowing Coogan to pull out his Sean Connery and Marlon Brando vocal impressions here and there, that’s probably not utterly inappropriate to the role. Raymond was something of a showman.

Still, the part is a serious one, and Coogan, in his fourth collaboration with Winterbottom, steps up to the challenge.

The nature of that challenge is expressed in the title of the film, which despite its tawdry subject matter has more to do more with emotions than hormones.

At its heart, “The Look of Love” is about the relationship between Paul Raymond and his daughter, Debbie (Imogen Poots), whom the screenplay, written by Matt Greenhalgh (“Nowhere Boy”), imagines as the one great love

Not that there was ever any shortage of women. Debbie’s mother, Jean (Anna Friel), puts up with her husband’s serial philandering until he moves in with his actress/ model/sex columnist girlfriend, Fiona Richmond (Tamsin Egerton). At the time of Jean and Paul’s divorce, her settlement was the largest in British history.

That milestone is one of several that the film glosses over, along with references to Paul’s business facing obscenity and prostitution charges.

Those events are alluded to in montages of news reports, but the legal implication of those accusations – as well as their ultimate outcome – is never explained.

More attention is paid to the personal, including Debbie’s wedding, breast cancer and drug abuse. Winterbottom’s film lays her addiction squarely at her father’s feet. In addition to shepherding Deb-

bie’s abortive singing career, Daddy was also an enabler, doing drugs with her, in an example of some of the worst parenting ever committed to film.

And yet, Paul loves his little girl, in his way. If the film suggests that Paul put Debbie on a collision course, it also makes it clear that there’s a real bond there. Despite a light tone to much of the movie – parts of which play like a sex farce – there’s a foreboding of real pain and tragedy.

In fact, the film begins with Paul, in his later years, receiving a piece of unspecified heavy news, before flashing back to his youth and moving forward. Throughout the film, the camera cuts to that sad face of his, just to remind us that something bad is coming.

Until then, there is a lot of partying, drug use and wild sex, including scenes of Paul in bed with Fiona and a couple of other women. (For the record, Richmond has

denied that these mini-orgies ever happened.) At times, you may find yourself wondering whether Paul is the sex obsessed one here, or Winterbottom. Though unrated, “The Look of Love” has much more nudity than one typically finds in an R-rated film. It actually starts to cloy after a while, in the way that even the most, er, glamorous men’s magazines sometimes can.

In that sense, “The Look of Love” calls to mind that old line about Playboy, a publication that some have claimed, however facetiously, to read for the articles, not the pictures. “The Look of Love” is also filled with acres and acres of naked flesh, but it’s the storytelling that keeps you engaged.

• Rating: Two and a half stars. The film runs 101 minutes and is unrated, containing sex, obscenity, drug use, smoking and plentiful bare skin.

Research may lead to healthier human hearts Dear Doctor K: My husband has congestive heart failure.

The doctor says it is caused by his age, and that there is no treatment. I read about a new discovery that age-related heart failure can be reversed in mice. Could that help my husband?

Dear Reader: There are different kinds of congestive heart failure, and there are effective treatments for many.

Your husband may have a common kind called agerelated diastolic dysfunction.

There is no specific treatment that prevents or reverses this condition. But you are right that a remarkable treatment was recently reported for a similar condition in mice.

Congestive heart failure occurs when the heart cannot pump efficiently enough to meet the body’s need for blood. In a young, healthy heart, when blood enters the main pumping chambers (the ventricles), their walls stretch and the chambers expand to receive all the blood.

In age-related diastolic dysfunction, the heart muscle becomes thicker and stiffer. As a result, when blood enters the heart, the heart muscle can’t stretch enough to accept all the blood. The blood backs up into the lungs, causing breathing

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff difficulty. Blood also backs up into the rest of the body, causing fatigue and swelling – particularly of the legs and feet.

We don’t know what causes age-related heart failure in humans, and because of that, we don’t know how to prevent or reverse it. A similar condition occurs in mice, and we may now have figured out how to treat it.

A group of my colleagues at Harvard Medical School conducted the research in mice that you read about. They were led by Dr. Richard Lee, coeditor-in-chief of the Harvard Heart Letter, and professor Amy Wagers.

Dr. Lee and Dr. Wager’s team joined the blood circulation of an old mouse to that of a young mouse. Suddenly, the arteries and veins of the two animals shared the same blood.

After four weeks of a shared circulation, the thickened, stiff heart muscle of the old mouse became dramatically less thick and stiff. The experiment was repeated on many pairs of old and young mice, with the same

results.

This indicated that some substance was present in the blood of the young mice that rejuvenated the heart muscle of the old mice. Most likely, that substance had been in the blood of the old mice when they were younger, but the substance had decreased as the mice aged.

The team then identified a substance, called GDF11, which was present at high levels in the blood of young mice but not old mice. They treated old mice with enough GDF11 to raise their blood levels of GDF11 to the same levels as it was present in young mice. Again, the thickened, stiff heart muscle of the old mice became thinner and more flexible.

This discovery in mice may one day lead to effective treatments to prevent or reverse this common type of heart failure in humans. Although it will take many more years of research to determine if this discovery will help us, recent advances in aging research give me hope that it will.
