spent much of the past few weeks on the Fox River, working on photos for Kane County Chronicle reporter Jonathan Bilyk’s recent series.

The series looked at the history and economy of the Fox River, as well as the recre-

ational opportunities it offers.

By far, my favorite part of that project was looking into all of the recreational possibilities.

I am a self-proclaimed “water baby,” and I love everything about lakes, rivers, streams

and pools.

Beyond the boating, kayaking, canoeing and fishing that take place on the Fox, there is now rowing on the river.

As part of this project, I had a chance to go in the coach’s boat during a training session

with the newly formed St. Charles Rowing Club.

It was a beautiful night to be on the river, and I was glad to showcase one more perk to having such an awesome resource in our backyard.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Fire Department will conduct a hydrant flow test Thursday at 3800 Commerce Drive, St. Charles.

ST. CHARLES – As they made their plans for Independence Day, Perry Golz and Kathy Greer knew they wanted to go somewhere different this year.

And that’s when Greer recommended St. Charles’ Pottawatomie Park as their Fourth of July destination.

8LOCAL BRIEFS Bluegrass Festival shifts to venue in Montgomery MONTGOMERY – The Northern Illinois Bluegrass Association will be moving its Bluegrass Festival to The Dickson-Murst Farm in Montgomery from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 28.

The festival will feature workshops on the traditional instruments in bluegrass music, with open-mike performances by bands from across the state, plus jamming sessions throughout the grounds. There also will be a vintage car show. Collectors in the area are invited to bring their autos for a day of talking cars and live entertainment.

The Bluegrass Festival at the Farm is a free event. The Conservation Foundation, owner of the site and co-host of the event, notes that the event will be held rain or shine.

Dickson-Murst Farm is at 2550 Dickson Road on the west side of Montgomery. It is one mile east of Route 47, two miles west of Orchard Road, between Route 30 and Galena/Chicago Road.

Battling blindness

Geneva Eye Clinic partners with group to spread word on retinal research options

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com Helping people fight vision loss and blindness is nothing new to the team at Geneva Eye Clinic or any other ophthalmology practice in and around the Tri-Cities.

But sometimes, just providing high-quality medical care is not enough, even for the best eye doctors. Sometimes, those living with vision loss or blindness need to know that they’re not alone and that – despite their vision loss – there are people and resources dedicated to helping them continue to live full lives.

And that’s why representatives of one local eye clinic said they have become the first to directly partner with the Foundation Fighting Blindness to help spread the word.

“Helping people with vision difficulties is what we do here,” said Lori Marco, clinical supervisor at the Geneva Eye Clinic. “So, this is a natural fit for us, to let the appropriate patients know what’s available to them.”

Last month, the Geneva Eye Clinic became one of the first three ophthalmology practices in the state to sign on as a Partner for Retinal Health with the Foundation Fighting Blindness.

The foundation, based near Baltimore with a local office in Vernon Hills, has since 1971 raised money for and directly funded research to combat a range of conditions that lead to vision loss and blindness, like macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa.

The foundation, for instance, annually operates Visionwalk fundraiser events in the Chicago area and other locations nationwide.

In recent months, the foundation launched the Retinal Health Partner program to attempt to enlist local eye doctors in its campaign and to help them offer a more full range of treatment options to their patients.

“This is especially key for newly diagnosed patients, who may be struggling,” Subleski said. “It gives them the chance to go home and contact us, so we can help them walk through a lot of this information that they have just been handed, and help them to see they’re not alone.”

To date, Subleski said the program has enlisted three ophthalmology practices, including the Geneva Eye Clinic, DeKalb Clinic in Sycamore and Illinois Retinal Associates, a practice with several sites spread throughout Chicago’s suburbs.

Michael Horstman, executive director of the Illinois Optometric Association, said he was unfamiliar with the program. However, he said it was not uncommon for eye doctors to work closely with charitable organizations dedicated to promoting vision health or combating vision loss.

Horstman noted that many eye doctors in the state are members of a local Lions Club, a civic organization that dedicates much of its charitable efforts toward combating blind-

ness and helping those with vision loss.

In Kane County, much of that work has been spearheaded in recent years by the El-

burn Lions Club.

Club president David Broz said his group, to his knowledge, has just one eye doctor – Keith Hougas, of Eyes on El-

burn – among its membership ranks.

But he said the group through the years has dedicated itself to combating vision loss, bringing in vision screening devices and offering free screenings and eye exams to local communities.

The group also promotes programs like summer camps for children with vision and hearing loss.

“Our intention is to catch vision problems as soon as possible,” Broz said. “The earlier you can catch the problems, we believe the research shows the better chance you have to correct them.”

Subleski said the Foundation Fighting Blindness hopes to continue to enlist eye care practices as partners to help centralize the fight against retinal diseases and vision loss conditions, or, at a minimum, raise awareness of the research ongoing into the conditions.

“We’re just starting to reach out through this program,” she said. “We think it’s promising.”

Others like Jinny Goral of Elgin, and Dave Flood of South Elgin, arrived later in the afternoon. Goral said she was making her sixth consecutive trip to the park on Independence Day. Goral and Flood noted the crowds seemed much larger this year than last, as the weather was a marked improvement over last year’s high temperatures near 100 degrees.

“This is just a really nice place to set up a picnic,” Flood said. “So this year we brought the grill and some other stuff, and decided to do it up right.”

Revealing real pension costs though, you see who’s been swimming naked. The Great Recession, and the resulting stock market plunge, exposed the fact that many states had been chronically underfunding their pensions but concealing the impact on their liabilities by assuming overly optimistic rates of return, among other devices.

Several states have responded with reforms. But there’s still a need for objective, realistic measures of pension liability that can help taxpayers and investors understand the true risks. In May, Moody’s, a credit-rating agency, took a step in the right direction by refiguring state pension liabilities based on the rate of return

THE WASHINGTON POST Generous pensions and retiree health plans have long distinguished jobs in state and local government from private-sector work.

Whether so much deferred compensation was as necessary and appropriate to recruiting a top-flight workforce as many claim is open to debate. But there’s no doubt such promises helped politicians secure the support of public-sector unions – without alienating the taxpayers who might have recoiled if all compensation costs were clearly and transparently presented to them in the short term.

When the tide goes out,

How’s that new recycling bin working for ya?

This week’s Independence Day arrived with a revolutionary shift from the old way of getting rid of our food and recycling waste.

The new regime made itself known a few weeks ago when marching through our neighborhoods like a victorious Roman army.

Driving about a block from our house, my wife, Tia, seeing a pickup truck hauling a flatbed of what looked like porta potties for Munchkins, said, “What’re those?”

“I dunno,” I answered, “but with the price of water these days, maybe our neighbors decided on outhouses to help reduce their utility bill.”

When coming back from doing errands, we saw in our driveway a forest green plastic column like something out of “2001: A Space Odyssey.” I half expected to see

“What is it?” Tia asked again.

“Not sure,” I replied, “but we should shoot it before it attacks.”

We circled the monolith from a safe distance. In neighboring driveways, citizens began approaching the alien form, some bravely pawing and poking it.

“There’s writing on top,” Tia announced.

“Probably hieroglyphics,” I warned. “Just like in a Stephen King novel. Gaze at its message, and you turn into a demon-possessed, lunatic writer.”

“Something you’re familiar with,” she said. “Hey, I think it’s for recycling.”

“Recycling what? Our second floor?”

I wheeled the eighth Wonder of the World into the garage, its girth pinning our two cars against the walls. Once parked, the beast allowed Tia close enough to whisper its needs to her, King Kong courting Fay Wray.

“It says ‘No Styrofoam, electronics, ceramics, food, plastic grocery bags, motor oil or hazardous waste containers, bulbs, windows, or yard waste.’”

“What’ll we do with the thousands of plastic grocery bags we come home with filled with one brick of cheese and the receipt?”

“Start taking our own canvas bags, like we do to Aldi,” she said.

“The bin takes ‘glass jars and bottles, aluminum cans, junk mail, paperback books, mixed papers, flattened boxes, and newspapers,’ ” I read.

“Just don’t get any ideas of feeding it my paperbacks,” I added, alarmed. “Those are sacred cows.”

“Yeah, well, your sacred cows could use a different holding pen.”

I wondered if other towns were experiencing the same foreign invasion. Indeed, the Batavia and St. Charles websites offered information about the changeover to Advanced Disposal, including the towns’ changing refuse pickup days.

The transition to new garbage stickers and recycling bins has not been entirely smooth. Our neighbor across the street, Mr. Magnanimous, put out the new recycle bin a week early, and the

former waste management company left it sitting on the curb still full.

“He’s like the student who doesn’t read directions,” I remarked to Tia, “both are left with something they don’t want.”

So, read the cover letter, folks, and enjoy your new curb appeal – keeping the bin, as instructed, three feet from other refuse. There’ll be a test each garbage day.

kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – An Italian discovered America more than 520 years before Giuseppe Papaccio’s arrival at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Thursday.

Admittedly no Christopher Columbus – Papaccio traveled by airplane and limousine and didn’t realize South Bend, Ind., was a pretty far drive from Geneva – that hardly mattered when he took stock of the Cougars’ clubhouse on Independence Day. One year ago, Papaccio was playing in a wood bat collegiate league in upstate Amsterdam, N.Y., on the Fourth of July. These days, he’s the first member of the parent Cubs’ 2013 draft class to join the Cougars.

“We had a nice little home field with fireworks and stuff last year, so pretty much the same thing but not at the professional level,” said Papaccio, a shortstop selected in the 18th round out of Seton Hall.

A season-high crowd of 11,304 attended the Cougars’ 7-4 win against Quad Cities, the fourth straight season Kane County played at home for the holiday.

Fans started buying tickets early Thursday morning, and the buzz picked up as players left the field after batting practice some 40 minutes before the gates opened at 5:15 p.m.

“There can’t be that many people lining up to get in already,” first baseman Dan Vogelbach said.

Manager Mark Johnson tells the Cougars (33-47 overall, 3-11 second half) to get used to it every July 4 they’re fortunate enough to be in a baseball uniform.

“I don’t know where we are, what we’re doing, but we’re playing a game somewhere,” Johnson said. “And it’s always a good crowd, no matter where you’re at. It’s

STAYING ON COURSE St. Charles East grad Rae focuses on American greens after Italy trip

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Nicole Rae got used to gawking at her surroundings during a recent study abroad tour of Italy.

The mountains and villas still lingered in her mind as she returned to competitive golf last week, but Rae’s focus since has shifted to stateside fairways and greens.

A St. Charles East product entering her junior season at Iowa, Rae played into the semifinals of the 1st flight championship at the Illinois State Women’s Amateur at Cantigny Golf in Wheaton. The event marked her first rounds since the Big Ten championship in April, and Rae quickly pinpointed what needed the most sharpening.

“Having full confidence in my swing stepping up to the ball,” she said. “Short game, a lot of it is just mental. But the swing, if you’re not hitting every day and getting that muscle memory, it can kind of go away a little bit.”

Rae was diplomatically done in by a prodigious opponent in the semis.

Elgin resident and the flight’s eventual runner-up – defeated Rae, 1 up, after 20 holes.

“I was very surprised at how well she did for her age,” Rae said.

“She was really good at hitting at the target. I mean, she hit a couple shots that were within two feet of the pin, and she hit it pretty far, as well.”

When Rae is on her game, she drives the ball between 230 and 240 yards. At the state am, her muscles needed little time dusting that action off, as Rae started feeling comfortable at the tee after the first few qualifying holes.

Although her irons were admittedly troublesome at times, Rae awaits the chance to hone her game at a pair of upcoming tournaments, including one that takes her to Lake Tahoe, Calif. She hopes to punctuate the summer with a strong showing at the Illinois Women’s Open, set for Mistwood Golf Club in Romeoville from July 31 to Aug. 2.

In the interim, she’s investing in a solid month of practice to help her ascend the Hawkeyes’ lineup. Rae competed in four tournaments as a sophomore – twice as many as during her freshman season – while shaving 17 strokes from her personal-best 54-hole

score, which now sits at 237.

“It was a tough transition going from high school to college, and it was definitely a little bit of struggle, but I’m working hard and definitely making a couple improvements,” Rae said. “I’m looking to make those adjustments and hopefully get to travel to all the tournaments we go to.”

Rae was unable to see any of the sparkling Italian golf courses she had heard about during a four-week trip to the small mountain town of Paderno del Grappa, Italy. The town, located about 90 minutes north of Venice, was convenient to other major Italian cities, which Rae visited on weekends.

A double major in marketing and journalism, Rae appreciated the opportunity to take business classes in the homeland of many of her mother’s relatives.

“It was really neat to get to see where my ancestors are from and kind of get to experience the real Italian culture,” Rae said.

Recent St. Charles North graduate Ariana Furrie leaves for campus at Wagner College in Staten Island, N.Y., on Aug. 20.

It won’t be the first time she’s reported to the Seahawks.

With no early summer workouts scheduled for the women’s golf program she’ll be joining, Furrie has remained on the radar by informing Ariana Furrie coaches of her summer tournament scores and trends.

“Right now, I’m just staying in touch with my coaches and telling them how I’m doing and which ones I’m playing in,” Furrie said. “Just so they can kind of know what to expect.”

Furrie was frank about her showing in the Illinois State Women’s Amateur at Cantigny Golf last week. While she “didn’t play nearly what I was hoping for” in her qualifying round, it put her in a competitive 3rd flight.

She won, 3 and 2, on each day of match play and began to wonder whether No. 16 at Cantigny – a favorite track from her youth – had transformed into a lucky hole. A victory against Hanna Netsingha of Carol Stream sealed the title.

Furrie’s younger sister, Gianna, an incoming freshman at North, was a 5th flight semifinalist and left encouraged by the experience.

“I thought it was good,” she said. “I liked it.”

Her big sister hopes to share that sentiment – and send happy news to the northeast – with a busy remaining slate of summer tournaments. She has hovered around the high 70s and low 80s in recent practice rounds.

“Once I start playing full rounds on the course, I hope my game will come together better,” Furrie said.

Cougars improving their home stadium Can there be such a thing as a five-tool baseball stadium?

Cougars brass continued to groom Fifth Third Bank Ballpark as a landmark candidate by recently adding “craft beer festival host” to the park’s ever-expanding list of multipurposes.

The club announced the Sept. 21 festival last week, and on Wednesday – in its best steel guitar twang – informed the masses that country music Curtis Haug star Sara Evans is coming to town for an Aug. 4 concert.

A 5K run and walk already starts and stops on the field, so make Fifth Third a polling place and the former Elfstrom Stadium really will be spraying to all fields.

“We want to be able to use the great facility that we have here not for just baseball,” Cougars general manager Curtis Haug said.

“Obviously, Cougars baseball is the main reason Fifth Third Bank Ballpark exists, but we feel we’ve got other opportunities to provide the community with some entertainment, whether it’s beer fests or Team USA baseball or concerts and things of that nature, 5Ks. Different things like that.”

Haug wasn’t trying to slip that Team USA bit in there.

The club announced last week that the Cougars will host separate Team USA Collegiate National Team woodbat games on July 15 and 16. USA Baseball officials reached out to the Cougars about the opportunity a few weeks ago.

Alt-rockers Wilco played Fifth Third last summer, a couple months before a Cougars employee brainstormed the beer fest in an annual October planning meeting.

“We’re always thinking ahead,” Haug said. “Even during the course of the 2013 season, we’re thinking ahead.”

QUICK READ Kevin Druley was a method to St. Charles North’s supercharged summer of boys basketball. And it wasn’t methodical.

“We’re trying to get it and go,” North Stars coach Tom Poulin said. “We’re looking for early offense in transition, and if we don’t have it, then we’re going to be patient and give somebody either a good look from 3 or something going toward the basket. But our initial offense is going to be transition.”

Early returns were promising, as North finished 11-1 in the Geneva Summer League behind versatile athletes Erik Miller such as Erik Miller, who doubles as a track standout in the spring.

While coaches know to carefully digest what they Tom Poulin see each summer, Poulin can’t help feeling good about a bunch that jelled quickly on the heels of heavy graduation losses.

“I’m excited and our coaching staff’s excited.

We really like this group,” Poulin said. “They’re already teammates, and they’re already team-first kids. We’ve got a lot, a lot of work to do on both ends of the floor, but like I’ve said, sometimes you spend a lot of time just getting them to play together and get along, and that’s already happening, so it’s going to be fun.”

Those in the crowd cheered and snapped pictures, enjoying an up-close view that millions had tiptoed to glimpse five days earlier in the streets of downtown.

What a spectacular trophy.

It never gets old to look at that thing.

Hours earlier, a group of reporters chatted before manager Robin Ventura arrived to soft-talk his way through a couple of minutes. Where, we wondered, would the Cup go after its on-field appearance?

Would it make a stop in the press box?

No such luck.

That’s too bad, I thought. I missed the Cup’s appearance in 2010 during a Cubs-Sox matchup at Wrigley Field.

Maybe you remember the game. It featured a terrific pitching duel between Gavin Floyd and Ted Lilly, both of whom carried no-hitters into the seventh inning.

But this was 2013, not 2010.

Sox relief pitcher Jesse Crain stood at his locker before the game. He wore a wrap the size of a beach ball on his right shoulder. He and first baseman Paul Konerko (lower back strain) had been placed on the 15-day disabled list.

“That’s the way it goes,” Crain said. “You can’t explain baseball. That’s why things on paper are always totally different than how they play out. You’ve got to go through injuries and fluky things that happen in this sport.”

Fluky things. Sounded like a good theme for a Sox column. Time to get to work.

Hey, look, football helmets!

An impressive display of football headwear lined a far wall of the Sox locker

room. The full-size helmets represented a mix of college and NFL teams and seemed to be arranged in no particular order.

Among the helmets was one for the Texas Longhorns, which made sense. That’s where Adam Dunn played backup quarterback in addition to playing baseball.

Other college helmets were for LSU, Florida, Georgia and Notre Dame – no Illini.

Meanwhile, Crain continued to talk about the injury-riddled season for the Sox. “That’s why you have depth, that’s why you have the minor leagues,” Crain said. “You bring up guys, give guys opportunities, and see what happens.”

Except the Sox don’t have a lot of depth, and they don’t have great minor leaguers.

At 34-48, they don’t have anything close to a winning record.

As the July 31 trade deadline approaches, the Sox could try to trade veteran players for younger pros-

pects. But all of their trade chips – ahem, Crain – keep getting hurt.

You know what’s weird?

The Sox locker room includes helmets for NFL teams such as the New York Jets, Kansas City Chiefs and Seattle Seahawks, but nothing for the Bears. Why no love for the hometown team?

Speaking of football, it would be fun to see another two-sport star like Bo Jackson. Maybe Dunn could sign on as the Bears’ No. 3 quarterback or something.

OK, fine, back to baseball.

A reporter asked Ventura whether all of his team’s troubles made him want to drink.

“Water?” Ventura deadpanned. “Water’s pretty good.”

He’s right. Water is good.

Bartoli, Lisicki advance to Wimbledon final

By LIZ CLARKE The Washington Post WIMBLEDON, England – With the standard-bearers of what’s known as “Big Babe tennis” nowhere in sight, oldschool qualities returned to Wimbledon’s Center Court Thursday.

The all-European women’s semifinals were chock-full of artful slices, crafty drop shots and serve-and-volley tactics.

And they were contested by average-sized women amid virtual silence, with neither a six-footer nor a shrieker among the unlikely quartet.

First to secure a spot in Saturday’s final was 15th-seed Marion Bartoli of France, who capped her preparations by taking a 20-minute catnap in the locker room beforehand only to find that no stockpile of energy was required. Bartoli breezed past Belgium’s Kirsten Flipkens, 6-1, 6-2, in

just 62 minutes.

The semifinal that followed redeemed the day, rippling with wild momentum swings, clever shot-making and gutsy forays to the net.

Germany’s Sabine Lisicki overcame a mid-match mental walkabout to prevail, 6-4, 2-6, 9-7, over Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, the highest seed remaining following the ousters of five-time champion Serena Williams and the twin towers deemed her most credible threat, Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova.

Neither Bartoli nor Lisicki is a household name.

From an American perspective, Bartoli is the player who halted the Wimbledon campaign of South Florida’s Sloane Stephens in the quarterfinals, while Lisicki upset the top-seeded Williams the round prior.

For Bartoli, Saturday’s championship represents a

hard-earned second shot at a first Grand Slam title. The 28-year-old Frenchwomen reached Wimbledon’s 2007 final but fell to Venus Williams in straight sets.

“I’m able to hit the ball harder, I’m moving faster – I do just everything a bit better than what I was doing six years ago,” Bartoli said afterward.

For Lisicki, 23, who reached Wimbledon’s 2011 semifinals as a wild card, it’s the realization of a dream.

And the reality of being one victory away from Wimbledon’s title made her erupt in tears, laughter and an enormous smile once she picked herself up from the frayed Centre Court grass.

Lisicki’s perpetual smile, unabashed love of Wimbledon and delight in signing autographs has made her the darling of British fans these last two weeks.

“It’s so nice to have the

support of the crowd,” Lisicki said, wearing a pink T-shirt decorated with a glitter Union Jack, during her post-match press conference. “There is no better feeling in the world than to have so much support on that beautiful Centre Court.”

As the tournament’s No. 15 and 23rd seeds, neither was expected to get this far. But it has been a confounding Wimbledon from the start, with two-time champion Rafael Nadal falling in the first round and seven-time champion Roger Federer the next.

The women’s side wasn’t immune to carnage, either.

But to cast Bartoli or Lisicki as mere beneficiaries of the top players’ misfortune would be a disservice.

Bartoli reached Saturday’s final without dropping a set.

And her performance against Flipkens, in what the BBC dubbed “The ‘Who’d Have

Thought It?’ Semifinal,” was her most impressive display of tennis yet.

It was a matchup of imps by present-day standards.

Bartoli is just over 5-6; Flipkens, 5-5. But despite an unconventional service motion crafted under the tutelage of her physician father, Bartoli uncorks a maddeningly difficult serve. And it flummoxed Flipkens, who managed just two break points the entire match.

Wimbledon’s 2003 junior champion, the 27-year-old Flipkens was the least likely of the women’s semifinalists, having been sidelined last year by blood clots that threatened to end her career.

Urged on by compatriot and four-time Grand Slam champion Kim Clijsters, Flipkens parlayed her serve-and-volley game to five successive victories here, kissing the grass in gratitude at each stage.

Symmetry was in the air.

It seemed like a good time to check in on the South Siders. Catch up on some baseball. Take advantage of the rare quiet spell one week after the Blackhawks partied in Grant Park and three weeks before the Bears opened training camp.

It was time to roll up my sleeves and write about baseball.

There’s not too many guys you can just step back and take a deep breath with. You’ve got to be on top of your game when you pitch against these guys.”

Papaccio, who batted .365 and led the Big East with 24 doubles as a senior this season, hopes to join that company.

He earned a speedy promotion after batting .313 with six RBIs in nine games with Rook-

ie League Arizona, playing against teams of recent draftees and extended spring training players.

The Cubs informed him of his call-up Wednesday afternoon. He arrived at O’Hare Airport at around 1:30 p.m.

Thursday and arrived in time for batting practice.

“I’ve talked to pretty much everybody. Just introduced myself,” Papaccio said. “It’s always different being the new guy, you know. So I don’t know, just trying to be quiet.”

The clubhouse initially was reserved after the game, as a handful of players were absent watching the postgame fireworks show.

Johnson encouraged players to make some noise, or at least turn the music on.

“It’s been a tough month, month-and-a-half putting stuff together or putting games away,” Johnson said. “So for us to kind of put all aspects together and come out ahead for once, it’s nice.”

Wishing a happy 75th birthday to the ‘Gleeful Generation’ Are you familiar with the TV ad that features young boys griping about how some younger boys “have it easy” because they can move their televisions to any room or even outdoors?

The ad makes a case for the kind of progress envy that is said to afflict a prior age group, leading to bitterness and strife.

On the other hand it may be simply the inevitable progress that is celebrated by all generations.

Sooner or later, each generation claims a unique identity and the accompanying pride and builds tolerable relationships with other generations. Right?

A cogent example might be the so-called Greatest Generation.

Then, consider my cohorts and me, who are at the halfway point in the year in which we all turn 75. We should perhaps anoint ourselves as the “Gleeful Generation!” We sure had fun.

Here’s a thumbnail sketch of where we have been and where we are going, starting with 1938 which – do the math – was 75 years ago. The country was emerging from financial distress, to see another world was on the

JOAN KNOWS Joan Arteberry horizon. We were not oblivious to world events since the adults were sitting close to their radios and rereading the Chicago newspapers. Soon the focus would be on our entry into that war and tragedies and triumphs. The outer lobby of the Arcada featured propaganda posters, and inside the theater folk were hoping that Humphrey Bogart would find true love with Ingrid Bergman in “Casablanca.”

We kids were having our laughs while learning the ways of a tricycle and rollerskates and hopscotching and leapfrogging around the neighborhood.

Later, after the war, we would enter Shelby or Lincoln school and discover the delights of “Dick and Jane” radio favorites, such as “Let’s Pretend” and “The Shadow.” Not to mention that other thriller, the fire escape at Shelby.

The ’50s found us at the long ago version of Haines Jr. High,

where a strip mall now exists on East Main Street. We had a great time with the variety of teachers and subjects and yet another fire escape. Admitted low points were the separation of home rooms by an unfortunate ability stereotype and for the girls the cursed task of sewing our own graduation dresses on a pedal-driven sewing machine.

The wider world was hearing about a place named Korea and a general named MacArthur.

The glorious date of 1956 marked us as new graduates of the only high school from the building that is now Thompson Middle School. We knew the real George Thompson who had his office there.

We discovered the art of the prank (ask a certain superintendent’s namesake with the nickname of a certain rodent).We all went to Little Seven athletic events and cheered both wins and losses.

We found joy in Gilbert and Sullivan, made the most of Shakespeare and learned to laugh at corny jokes delivered by the faculty.

We certified Paul Bergeson

as a favorite and learned Latin, French and the weird language of algebra. American history was presented by a sophisticated woman, Edythe Sinden, in the classroom with murals that were politically incorrect by today’s standards but were the home of eye-opening discussion then.

New fashion trends, such as the racy Bermuda shorts, saddle shoes and Peter Pan collars emerged as we began to “Rock Around the Clock.”

Some of us went off to college, quite a few enlisted in the Marines, the Army and Navy, and many found jobs that would lead to successful careers.

The ’60s brought longer hair for all, protesting and pretending and the core question, “Where have all the flowers gone?”

Lifestyle choices were widely available and embraced.

We listened to Peter, Paul and Mary and Simon and Garfunkel.

We laughed as comedians made fun of our leaders. Our TV favorites ranged from “Perry Mason” to “Peyton Place” to a “Hey Hey” from Jack Brickhouse. The prevailing question was “Knock, knock. Who’s there?”

We smiled as you discovered our Beatles and shaped your own versions of being green. We still rocked and rolled but preferred the “Oldies.”

As the generations begin to integrate into all ages, events such as the county fairs, the Fourth of July fireworks and picnics or perhaps at a Blackhawks game, you will recognize us. Don’t look for gray hair. Most of us are remarkably well preserved and still involved in the community. You may hear us laughing out loud, flashing a peace sign or extending a middle finger. We’re still having fun. And speaking out.

Waubonsee auto student named best in nation KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com SUGAR GROVE – Matthew Meyer of Plano finished first in the Collision Repair Technology category of the national SkillsUSA competition in Kansas City, Mo., last month.

“It’s probably the best feeling I’ve ever had,” Meyer said in a news release. “If I placed at all, I figured I’d be second or third, so when they called me for first, I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, I can’t believe I beat everyone in the country.’”

Meyer advanced to SkillsUSA to compete against 29 automotive students from two- and four-year colleges across the U.S., after finishing first in the state competition in April.

According to the release, Meyer’s category included four hands-on exercises in metal straightening, welding, plastic repair and structural analysis, along with written tests on estimating, structural analysis and a National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence exam.

With his first-place finish, Meyer won a trip to the SEMA automotive trade show in Las Vegas, Snap-on tools and several industry training and certification courses.

Cadillac poised to conquer luxury car market Cadillac’s fortunes have improved dramatically this year with the introduction of the 2013 XTS and ATS. They join a lineup that includes the popular CTS midsize sedan, SRX upgrade sport utility vehicle and the stalwart large Escalade SUV. The ATS is a compact sedan and its new counterpart is the XTS, which is a large sedan on the luxury end of the market. Compared to its predecessors, the XTS is bit shorter than the DTS and a few inches longer than the STS. Priced roughly from $45,000 to $60,000, the primary luxury carmakers, such as BMW with the 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz with the E-Class, need not worry as the XTS is in a lesser league of its own shared by the Lincoln MKS, Hyundai Genesis and Chrysler 300C. An XTS was delivered by the manufacturer for a week of test driving to see what all the fuss was about. It was the top-of-the-line Platinum model priced at $58,000, but the basic luxury features, some unique to Cadillac, can be found on the base $45,000 XTS. Those features include the V6 powerplant, xenon headlights, lighted door handles, dual zone climate control, power front seats and steering wheel, heated and power exterior mirrors, rear parking sensors, keyless ignition and smart start, plus dampers that adapt in a nanosecond to road conditions. This ensures an extremely smooth and balanced ride.

In the past Cadillac has acquired a reputation for mammoth proportions and the XTS highlights that tradition.

Front power seats offer more legroom than normal (officially 45.8 inches) which translates into a lot of space for larger human frames. The rear leather seats offer ample leg room with the comfort enhanced by bolstering and soft reading lights. Even with the expansive cabin space, the trunk offers 18 cubic feet of storage. And, of course, the trunk is carpeted and lighted, and the lid opens automatically by pressing a control on the key fob.

The heavily insulated cabin means road and engine noises do not invade interior privacy. Silence pervades the interior until the sound system is turned on. In the Platinum, sound comes from a Bose 14-speaker system, which is part of Cadillac’s CUE apparatus installed on all models. CUE controls sound, climate, navigation and connected apps. There

BEHIND THE WHEEL Jerry Kuyper are no knobs or dials. It is all touch screen (8-inch), which will appeal to savvy younger buyers but might irritate older clientele.

Leather abounds in all XTS models with light stitching on black or the reverse. In the tested XTS, tan stitching secured the black leather to the dashboard. The supple power and heated seats were tan on tan.

All models get 19- or 20-inch P245 tires mounted on alloy wheels. The Platinum gets the 20 inchers. A temporary spare is stored under the trunk floor.

Only the base model is front-wheeldrive. The other three (Luxury, Premium, Platinum) are all-wheel-drive.

A 3.6-liter, direct injected, 304-horsepower V6 engine is mated to a shiftable six-speed automatic transmission.

Somewhat economical, the 4,000-pound four-door, five-passenger XTS averaged 22.8 miles per gallon during the test week. The Environmental Protection Agency gives this large sedan a rating of 28 mpg on the highway and 17 in the city. During the test week, much of the driving was in city roadways or

crowded interstates. The car was driven aggressively.

Distinct to the Platinum model are the larger wheels, power sunroof and power rear sunshade. It already has adaptive headlights, three-zone automatic climate control (driver, front seat passenger, rear seats), 110-volt power outlet and a heads-up display for the driver. The driver is informed by this display, which is projected onto the windshield but seemingly beyond it, what the official speed limit is and how fast the car currently is moving. It helps keep driver in line with speed limits.

Safety fare is beyond the norm of air bags (front, sides, knees and overhead), traction and stability controls and antilock disc brakes, but also includes, depending on model and options, lane departure warning, blind spot monitor and forward collision alert. An option on the tested Platinum included a vibrating driver’s seat. The vibration alerted the driver to the possible onset of a collision. During the test week, the vibrations were intense while backing up and getting too close to stationary objects.

The disc brakes can bring the XTS to a stop from 60 miles per hour in a tested 123 feet, which is OK for a car of this size.

OnStar is onboard for all sorts of

situations including roadside assistance and, if locked out, having doors unlocked remotely. It is difficult to get locked out, though, unless one locks the car and loses the remote key fob, either temporarily or permanently.

The remote key fob inadvertently can be left in a center console storage tray, which is easy to do. The driver unlocks and gets into the XTS and tosses the key fob into a tray. With smart start, no key is necessary to start the car. The key is forgotten and then the driver exits the XTS without it. If this happens, the XTS emits a beep-beep sound. That beep-beep alerts the driver to the fact the remote lock and unlock key fob is still in the car. The driver will, supposedly, then retrieve the remote key fob. The car never locks in this situation. If the key fob is left in the car, the XTS remains unlocked until it is retrieved.

Warranty coverage is four years or 60,000 miles, and six years or 70,000 miles on the drivetrain and for roadside assistance A smart looking vehicle, the XTS has enhanced Cadillac’s image in the luxury car market.

Cadillac’s year-to-date sales increase of 38 percent through May was the luxury brand’s largest jump since 1976 and Chicago may be a key reason why the 110-year old brand is the fastest growing major automotive brand in the United States.

In May, Cadillac sales in the Chicago were up 38.8 percent compared to 2012.

Year-to-date Cadillac sales in the city are up 18 percent.

Statewide, Illinois Cadillac sales were up 37.6 percent in May compared to last year and 24.2 percent year-todate.

“Chicago has always been a loyal Cadillac market, but the real growth is being driven by consumers who are new to the brand,” said Chase Hawkins, vice president of Cadillac sales and service. “About two out of three Cadillac buyers are coming to the brand for the first time. That indicates a change in luxury consumer sentiment, and a strong response to the dramatic design and performance of the new Cadillac products.”

The XTS, introduced in the summer of 2012, had its best retail sales in May. Cadillac’s total sedan portfolio is up 122 percent nationwide so far in 2013.

‘Despicable Me’ sequel a delight Sequels often present conundrums for filmmakers.

For example, how can you call a movie “Despicable Me 2” when the hero is no longer despicable?

The answer is that you just do it anyway and hope that nobody considers it a problem. And if Gru, the reformed supervillain again voiced by Steve Carell, is no longer evil, he is still impolite. Hearing Carell grumble in his invented Eastern European accent about how his neighbors are a bunch of morons carries a satisfying humor of its own.

Having retired from trying to conquer the world, Gru has settled down to raise the three little girls he adopted in the first movies. His massive underground base has been transformed into a jelly factory. The macaroni-shaped Minions happily go along with Gru’s switch to legitimate businessman, but his technical wizard, Dr. Nefario (Russell Brand), misses being evil. His name probably has something to do with it.

Then, in a setup reminiscent of “The Incredibles,” Gru is tempted out of retirement by a spy agency called the Anti-Villain League.

This rockets “Despicable Me 2” into the realm of James Bond parody, with a submarine car from “The Spy Who Loved Me” and a volcanic ending that cannot be anything but an homage to “You Only Live Twice.” The villain’s attack chicken is a new element, though.

The Anti-Villain League needs Gru’s insider knowledge to capture an unknown mastermind who has stolen a virus that transforms cuddly animals into rampaging purple monsters. The agency has tracked the enemy to a

WESTHOFF REVIEWS Jeffrey Westhoff shopping mall and believes he is operating one of the stores as a front.

Gru is sent undercover to manage a cupcake shop in the mall and spy on the other proprietors. He isn’t pleased to be saddled with a partner, rookie agent Lucy Wild (Kristen Wiig), not sensing that she has a crush on him.

The idea of a villain using a shopping mall for a lair and the prospect of Gru and the Minions trying to make cupcakes are rife with comic potential, but the filmmakers do little with either possibility.

Gru locks on to a suspect immediately, Eduardo (Benjamin Bratt), owner of the Mexican restaurant.

He is certain Eduardo was once the masked villain El Macho, who apparently died years ago while riding an explosive-laden shark into an active volcano.

Amid all the spy stuff,

romance is in the air. Gru’s three girls want to set him up on a date, which annoys him. But Gru really blows his stack when the bespectacled oldest girl, Margo (“iCarly” star Miranda Cosgrove), swoons over her first crush, Eduardo’s smooth-talking son, Antonio (Moises Arias).

“Despicable Me 2” suffers one problem common to sequels, namely that the freshness found in the original cannot be recaptured. Otherwise, there is no drop in quality. The same creative team – writers Ken Daurio and Cinco Paul and directors Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud – returns, guaranteeing more snazzy visuals and terrific humor.

Even the scenery conveys Gru’s awkward transition to fatherhood. Just the sight of a pink plastic playhouse in the front yard of Gru’s “Addams Family” home scores a laugh.

Much of the comedy is slapstick, and much of the slapstick is provided by the horde of gibberish-spouting, violence-prone Minions.

Why settle for three stooges when you can have 300?

The Minions are the most perfectly realized comic cartoon creations in ages, probably since Sebastian the crab from “The Little Mermaid,” and “Despicable Me 2” could have overdosed on the crazy creatures. But the Minions don’t get that much more play than they did in the first movie.

As in the original, the voice cast is exceptional.

Carell’s accent for Gru is genius, and he gets a superb romantic interest in Wiig’s enthusiastic Lucy. Wiig returns after playing the vile orphanage administrator in the first movie.

Bratt delivers an effusive comic performance under what must have been pressing circumstances. He was a last-minute replacement for Al Pacino, who recorded the role of Eduardo then dropped out over those familiar “creative differences.” My guess is those creative differences went something like this: “That was fine, Mr. Pacino, but could you give us a little less on that line. Maybe take it down about 8 decibels. The microphone can handle only so much gusto.”

Unlike “Monsters University,” “Despicable Me 2” is not being released in 3-D because the market demands that all computer-animated movies be in 3-D. They don’t simply throw objects at the camera. They pull the audience into the action, and “Despicable Me 2” becomes a delightful carnival ride.

This sequel is almost as much fun as the riotous original while tugging a bit at your heart because Gru is a misunderstood sweetheart and his girls are adorable.

And so are the Minions.

Phillips were conceived through in vitro fertilization. Their questions should be answered honestly and in an age-appropriate manner.

Age-related eye conditions may affect LASIK surgery Dear Doctor K: I’m in my 50s and considering LASIK surgery.

Should my age be a factor when deciding whether to have this procedure?

Dear Reader: I can understand why you’re considering LASIK (laser-assisted insitu keratomileusis). It can correct common eye problems – nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism – and can eliminate your need for glasses or contact lenses.

LASIK corrects vision by reshaping the cornea, the clear dome at the front of the eye.

The procedure is painless, and complications are few when the doctor is experienced. (I’ve put a detailed illustration of the procedure on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

As LASIK has become more popular, many of us have contemplated having our vision surgically corrected. Even in your 50s or beyond, if your eyes are otherwise healthy, LASIK surgery can produce excellent results.

Age itself isn’t a big factor in deciding whether to have LASIK surgery. Surgical outcomes are similar regardless of age. But you and your doctor should consider the following age-related eye conditions when making the decision:

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff • Cataracts. With age, the lens of the eye can become clouded.

If this happens, the clouded lens can be removed and an artificial one implanted. If you’ve already had LASIK surgery, it’s trickier to choose the correct lenses for cataract surgery. If there’s any sign of clouding, your ophthalmologist may recommend cataract surgery first, and to reconsider LASIK surgery only after the cataract surgery has healed.

• Glaucoma is caused by increased fluid pressure within the eye. The pressure affects the optic nerve, which starts in the back of your eye, leads to the brain and allows you to see. If glaucoma is untreated, it can lead to blindness. Ophthalmologists screen for glaucoma by checking intraocular pressure (fluid pressure inside the eye) and looking for optic nerve damage.

LASIK surgery leads to lower intraocular pressure readings. This may interfere with early diagnosis. Tell your ophthalmologist if you’ve had LASIK when you are being screened for glaucoma. You

should not have LASIK if you have moderate or severe glaucoma. If your glaucoma is mild and easily managed, you may still be a candidate for the surgery.

• Dry eye syndrome. With age, your eyes produce fewer tears. LASIK often worsens dry eye. Any ophthalmologist you see about LASIK should ask you about whether your eyes have a tendency to be dry, but just in case they don’t ask, be sure to mention it.

• Presbyopia. In our 40s and 50s, we become less able to focus clearly on near objects. That’s because the lenses inside our eyes get stiff, and a stiff lens can’t bend light in the way that’s necessary to see near objects. The usual remedy is to wear reading glasses. LASIK doesn’t prevent presbyopia. If you have LASIK in your 40s, you’re still likely to need reading glasses within the next 10 years or so.

The price for LASIK varies by doctor and by community. The average price may be around $2,000-$2,500. Health insurance generally does not cover the cost.

But you should strive to find a reason not to open one no-trump when you have a five-card major. Here, having no minor-suit stopper is an excellent reason.

South does not like to make a takeout double with 4-3-3-3 distribution, but his hand is a tad too strong to pass. North’s cue-bid shows 12-plus points.

East wins with the heart jack, cashes the ace, and takes the king, West discarding, say, the diamond three. What should East do next?

If West had a minor-suit ace, he should have ruffed the third heart and cashed it (or discarded an encouraging card in that suit). So the defenders are not getting a minor-suit trick. East must try for a trump trick by leading another heart.

Here, when West ruffs with the spade eight and dummy overruffs with the 10, suddenly East gains a trump trick. It is a textbook uppercut.
