His interest in the issue be-

gan in 2009 when he was taking a firefighter training class and prepared a public service announcement about texting and driving for a class assignment.

“My eyes were really opened about how dangerous it really is, especially for new drivers,” he said. After the project was complete, he showed it to the fire chief, who agreed it was information local high school students needed to know. The Right Direction was formed as a separate entity from the Lombard Fire Department. Now known as “Firefighter Vaz” throughout the schools, he first visited Glenbard East

and Montini Catholic under the program. It was his first time speaking in front of students. “The feedback we got from the students was a really humbling experience,” Vazquez said. “Some of the images are graphic, but I talk to them like adults because they are adults.” His presentations are filled with pictures, videos and statistics to educate drivers on the decisions they make when in the car. It’s a lot of information in a short amount of time, and although Vazquez knows students won’t absorb and retain everything, he is confident that the overall message sticks. This year, he wants to expand the program to more high schools, community groups, driving schools and other venues. He has added a second instructor to teach classes and is working to develop sponsorships with car manufacturers and cellphone companies. “I’m trying to give them the information they need to be the best drivers they can,” he said.

LOMBARD – When he walks up to a car wreck, Greg Vazquez, a firefighter and paramedic with the Lombard Fire Department, checks for skid marks. Often, skid marks of 200 or 300 feet suggest a mature driver in the front seat who lost control of the vehicle who tried, unsuccessfully, to stop. Short or nonexistent skid marks make Vazquez’s heart sink, because it usually means there’s a young driver in the car who was distracted and didn’t realize he or she was about to crash. “Some of the things we see last a long time,” Vazquez said. For the past three years, Vazquez, a 25-year veteran with the Lombard Fire Department, has operated The Right Direction – a program that has him visiting high schools and speaking to students about the dangers of texting and driving. Pavers in D-99 lots?

• Miguel Casarrubias, 28, 147 S. Forest Ave., Hillside, was charged with domestic battery after an incident at 3:50 a.m. June 28 at Uncle Julio’s Mexican Restaurants, 2360 Fountain Square Drive.

I just wanted to comment about District 99 putting in brick paver parking lots. With this unstable economy, you would think they might think a little more about putting in asphalt, maybe conserve a little bit or save money. And then they might have money left over to get a jacuzzi for the teachers. Just wanted everyone’s opinions on that and I think it’s ridiculous we’re spending so much money when we could have done asphalt and saved some money.

Villa Park police investigating string of battery incidents SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA VILLA PARK – The Villa Park Police Department is looking for a suspect believed to have been involved in multiple battery incidents throughout the village recently. Officers were called to the 1500 block of South Ardmore Avenue at 6:30 p.m. Sunday to respond to a battery incident.

The victim, an elderly woman, told officers she had been walking to her vehicle when a black, male subject came up behind her and put his hand over her mouth. The woman screamed, and the man ran from the area. The DuPage County Sheriff’s Department also responded to two similar reports that occurred Sunday in the Brandywine subdivision in unin-

corporated Villa Park near the 1600 block of South Ardmore Avenue. The suspect is described as a black male between the ages of 18 and 22 years old, standing at least 5-foot-10 and 150 pounds with short, black hair. General purpose bifocals are not designed for computer work as they force the wearer to tilt the head back in order to focus on the screen while looking through the lower segment of the bifocal lenses. A forced position like this can cause neck and shoulder pain and even low back pain. Experience, commitment to technology, and a genuine concern for patient welfare enable the highly qualified staff at SKOWRON EYE CARE to work together as a team to consistently deliver quality, affordable eye care. At Skowron Eye Care, our mission is your vision. P.S. Anti-glare coatings on prescription work glasses help diminish on-screen glare and brightness of overhead lights.

GLASSES THAT GO RIGHT TO WORK While reading glasses may be fine for reading books and papers at distances up to 18 inches away from the eyes, they may not be well-suited to computer work. No single lens prescription can meet all needs, which is why many office workers turn to dedicated computer-screen bifocals. These glasses have a mid-range prescription on the upper portion of the lens and a reading prescription on the bottom part. This setup enables those with desktop computers to shift their gazes easily from the computer screen to printed material, and back again. As with other types of bifocals and trifocals, computer-specific bifocals can be outfitted with no-line progressive lenses, which give co-workers little clue that they are bi- or trifocals.

Baked Apple Breakfast Co. starts day off right DOWNERS GROVE – Does anyone not like breakfast? The popularity of diners would suggest that not only does everyone love breakfast, but patrons will eat it just about anytime – morning or night. The thought holds true at The Baked Apple Breakfast Co. in Downers Grove, where breakfast definitely is the specialty, and you can get your favorites right up until close at 3 p.m. The eatery’s menu is playful and inventive with options such as the Company omelet – apples, cheddar cheese and a dollop of sour cream – and Red Velvet pancakes with a sweet cream cheese spread. Diners also are treated to plenty of lunch options. Available any time, the luncheon menu includes a well-rounded range of sandwiches, salads, wraps and burgers. On a recent Saturday trip, a friend and I decided to tackle both. I ordered the Wild Turkey – a panini-style sandwich of thick-cut roast turkey, bacon and cheddar. The side options give you a choice between fries and pasta salad.

It also comes with a pickle, as all sandwiches should. The turkey was moist and laid on deep, and the bacon retained a good crispiness, even under the pressed panini pressure. I’m glad I decided to go with the side of fries, because they absolutely stand out at Baked Apple. Long, thin and golden with a crispy crunch, these fried taters come in a bountiful bunch and really hit the spot. My dining companion was in the breakfast mood

The Baked Apple Breakfast Co. celebrated its grand opening earlier this year. and ordered the Uncle Jesse omelet – spinach, tomato and feta cheese. He really was feeling the hash browns, which, like the fries, were wonderfully crisp, with just the right amount of soft potato inside. His omelet was bright yellow with colorful glints of spinach and nicely filled. It was a substantial serving, and to Baked Apple’s credit, he nearly finished it all. Neither of us was in the mood for sweets on our recent visit, which was too bad. The menu has a lot of options for those who like waffles, pancakes and French toast. A few I considered for another visit are the Holly Berry French toast smothered in strawberries, blueberries and raspberries; the Company French toast, stuffed with cream cheese and covered in sauteed apples; and the Jane Goodall, consisting of your basic banana pancakes with walnuts. For traditionalists, there’s also a tasty looking eggs Benedict, which I spotted as it was delivered to a

Overall, we had a great time hanging out at The Baked Apple Breakfast Co. The price was good, and our coffee was strong and regularly topped off. Montini wins Red Grange Classic, qualifies for national tournament in Alabama By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com

Montini quarterback Chuck Norgle finds Patrick Maloney for a touchdown at the Red Grange Classic. Visit shawurl.com/o14. Division I programs. Sykes, who will play linebacker this fall, relished the opportunity to show off his ability in a competitive setting during the summer. “You get to compete in the summer because obviously we can’t compete in full pads,” Sykes said. “It’s nice to see some of the competition and get reps with your team.” Other local teams are competing in 7-on-7s to freshen up the summer schedule. Addison Trail will host Willowbrook and the rest of the West Suburban Conference for a 7-on-7 tournament Thursday. Glenbard East already has taken part in a few 7-on-7s and has two more scheduled in July. Summer competition isn’t just for skill players either. Linemen challenges provide strength-based events such as truck pull and tug of war among others to give them something to look forward to, as well. “With today’s kids, everything is about playing,” said Glenbard East coach John Walters. “One of the toughest things is to practice. Football is a practice sport. You have to put in four practices during the week before you get to a game.”

LOMBARD – As the Red Grange Classic started, Montini football coach Chris Andriano said 7-on-7 football doesn’t mean anything when it comes to real football. Andriano probably hasn’t changed his mind, but maybe he’s hoping he’s wrong after the Broncos won the 24-team tournament loaded with the best programs in the state. Montini, sparked by offensive MVP Tyler Tumpane and defensive MVP Nile Sykes, won the two-day tournament with a 10-2 record. The title means the Broncos qualified for the National Select 7-on-7 Championships from July 24 to 26 in Hoover, Ala. Despite the fact that Andriano wouldn’t put stock into 7-on-7 in terms of evaluating his team, he admits it has its purpose. “It does have value for learning purposes for your offense and your defense,” Andriano said. “You get to work on timing with your quarterbacks and receivers. They get a better understanding of routes and how the whole pattern is put together. “Your defensive guys have to know their responsibilities. I like it because you have to think and the speed of the game is there.” Sykes displayed his impressive speed for a player his size – 6-foot-1, 219 pounds – and showed why he already has college offers from major

Augustana senior infielder Jeremy Juhl (Glenbard East) hit .301 this spring and started all 45 games for the Vikings. Gluten-free meals Get your gluten-free menu started with these tips: n Start your day with a gluten-free English muffin that’s crispy outside, fluffy inside and topped with delicious, nutritious goodies. Try topping yours with mashed avocado that’s been whisked with crushed chili, a splash of lime juice and a pinch of salt. Or, if you like something sweeter, try gluten-free almond butter with raspberries, blackberries or a dash of cinnamon sugar. n Go beyond the basics for your midday meal with a standout sandwich. Rethink tuna salad by using Dijon mustard instead of mayo and adding capers, diced sundried tomatoes and preserved lemon. Or go for a veggie extravaganza with portobello mushrooms, roasted red peppers, crunchy sprouts and hummus. n Everyone loves pizza for dinner. Using gluten-free tortillas, the whole family can create personalized minipizzas with thin, crunchy crusts. Simply assemble the toppings of choice and either grill or toast in the oven.

American as ... Fourth of July is not complete without apple pie By Lisa Messinger Creators Syndicate

EaSY RECIPE

Chicken Satay Prep time: 15 minutes Refrigerate: 1 hour Cook time: 6 minutes n 2 T fish sauce n 2 T red curry paste n 2 t minced fresh lemon grass n 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 3/4inch strips n Bamboo skewers n 1/2 cup storebought peanut satay sauce Mix coconut milk, fish sauce, curry paste and lemon grass in small bowl until well blended. Place chicken in large resealable plastic bag or glass dish. add marinade; toss to coat well. Refrigerate 1 hour or longer for extra flavor. Remove chicken from marinade. Discard any remaining marinade. Soak bamboo skewers thoroughly in water for at least 30 minutes before threading with chicken. This prevents them from burning when on the grill. Thread chicken strips onto skewers. Broil or grill over medium-high heat 3 minutes per side or until chicken is cooked through. Serve with peanut satay sauce for dipping.

Freedom is the name of the game on the Fourth of July. So why not extend that privilege in a fun way to your party guests’ taste buds? Alongside your red, white and blue decorations, paper plates and cups, make everything you set on the outdoor buffet a playful and delicious choice they can decide upon, such as: n Platters of large, juicy red, green and purple grapes. n Bowls of bananas and plantains. n Salad bar with romaine, arugula and spinach. n Angus beef hot dogs, turkey hot dogs and tofu hot dogs. n White frankfurter buns, wholegrain frankfurter buns and pretzel frankfurter buns. n All-American, Dijon and spicy mustard. n Plain potato chips, sour cream and chive potato chips and cheddar potato chips. n Orange juice, orange soda and orange-flavored iced tea. And for dessert, why not serve both this outstanding all-American apple pie and the famed French upside-down apple pie (tarte tatin). Lisa Messinger is a first-place winner in food writing from the Association of Food Journalists and the author of seven food books, including “Mrs. Cubbison’s Best Stuffing Cookbook” and “The Sourdough Bread Bowl Cookbook.”

All-American Apple Pie Yields 1 9-inch pie n 1 (9-inch) store-bought or homemade pie crust that includes top and bottom n 6 to 8 preferably firm and slightly tart apples, such as Granny Smith, Gravesteins or Rhode Island Greenings (about 3 pounds) n Granulated sugar (see note) n Ground cinnamon, to taste n About 3 T sifted all-purpose flour n 3 T butter, cut in small bits If crusts are homemade, keep them chilled. Preheat oven to 375 F. Peel and core the apples and slice them about 1/4-inch thick. Toss with sugar and cinnamon and with the flour. Fill the pie’s bottom crust

with apple slices, mounding them somewhat in center. Dot with butter. Cover loosely with top crust, using a little water to seal crusts together. Crimp edges using a fork or the tip of a knife, making several dents in the top crust. Place in the preheated oven and bake for 1 hour, or until

golden brown and giving off a pleasant scent. Preferably serve warm. Note: The amount of sugar is determined by how sweet the apples are.

Puff Pastry Tarte Tatin Yields 6 to 8 servings n 1/4 pound (1 stick) unsalted butter n 1 1/2 cups sugar, divided n 10 Golden Delicious apples n 2 T lemon juice n 1 9-inch circle pre-baked puff pastry (see note) Preheat oven to 350 F. In a 9-inch ovenproof skillet, melt butter over mediumhigh heat. Stir in 1/2 cup of the sugar and cook, stirring constantly until it turns golden brown. Carefully remove from heat and set aside. Peel, core and quarter the apples. In a nonreactive bowl, toss together the apples and lemon juice. arrange apple quarters rounded sides down in the ovenproof skillet, like a flower pattern, filling in the gaps with more apples placed curved side up. Sprinkle 1/2 cup sugar over the apples.

Cook over medium heat until the apples start to brown, about 5 minutes. Transfer the skillet to the oven and cook until the apples are tender, 20 to 30 minutes more. Remove from the heat and let the apples cool to room temperature. Before serving, preheat the broiler. Return the pan to medium heat, just until the caramel softens enough for apples to loosen. Remove the pan from the heat and top the apples with the pre-baked pastry. Invert a round heatproof serving platter over the pastry and, carefully holding the platter and skillet together, invert them; then lift off skillet to unmold the tarte tatin onto the platter. If any apples stick to the skillet or become dislodged, replace them on

the tarte tatin. Sprinkle the top evenly with the remaining sugar and caramelize it very briefly under the broiler. note: Follow manufacturer’s instructions for cutting and baking puff pastry.
