A call to all those who collect Oh, the wonder of collections!

As a kid, I would collect practically anything – stamps, stickers, pencils, erasers, bookmarks, rocks, shells, coins and anything that had to do with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

None of these collections ever amounted to much. In fact, some of the collections weren’t even 100 percent legitimate. I remember, for example, including arcade tokens in my coin collection – seems my standards for that particular collection weren’t too high.

As so often happens, the stuff I collected as a kid got sold at garage sales or donated to second-hand shops as I got older.

I moved on to collecting CDs and vintage coats, somewhat more practical fare.

Today, I still seek out those items, but a coat has really got to be something special if I’m going to cram it into my closet.

Council, park district organizing arts event

Excise tax revenue declines

ST. CHARLES – The St Charles Arts Council, in partnership with the St. Charles Park District, is organizing an All-City, All-Arts Event – Charlie’s Center for the Arts.

The Charlie’s event will run from Sept. 12 to 15.

It will encompass multiple venues all over St. Charles that will feature visual art galleries/studios, music, literature (spoken word performances, storytelling, etc.), dance, live theater and arts programming.

Elburn Lions Club to host dinner, screenings ELBURN – The Elburn Lions Club will have an eye screening for youths at its next free spaghetti dinner event, which will be from 5 to 7 p.m. July 23 at the club, which is at 500 Filmore St., Elburn.

The screening is for those ages 6 months through teens.

The screening can help alert parents to the need for further treatment.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – As the cost of cellphone contracts goes down, the amount collected in excise taxes by Geneva will go down, 2nd Ward Alderman Donald Cummings said at a recent City Council meeting.

“We jumped to a different plan … and our bill went from $297 for five phones with data and texting … to $140 for all data, all the talking and texting,” he said. “… I can’t be the only person doing this. If our cellphone bills are … all going down, the [telecommunications excise] tax is based on that. I think this is something we should watch.”

The monthly staff report on the June excise tax report put the city’s revenue from the tax at $87,600, more than 34 percent less than June 2012, which was $133,000.

Cummings said his worry when he saw the telecommunications excise tax reduction was that it would occur even faster than the erosion of motor fuel tax revenue.

“Because fuel efficiency isn’t changing as quickly as the cost of cell service,” Cummings said.

“We looked at all our local government distributive funds, and we started talking to the state because they are, as you know, in dire straits and looking for funding elsewhere,” McKittrick said.

“And they continue to look at our local government distributive funds as one of them.”

McKittrick said staff are anticipating a reduction in that revenue source.

“We are very conservative when it comes to projecting those numbers,” McKittrick said. “We do anticipate that this number will continue to decline as with the all other local government distributive funds. We anticipate that the state will take those, or at least a portion of those, as time goes on.”

McKittrick said the decline and impending loss of those funds are something she includes in the budget presentation each year, saying the city needs to look at revenue streams.

“We need to continue looking at our own fees. Obviously, no one wants to

raise property taxes,” McKittrick said. “That’s an area the council needs to look at because you’re absolutely right. I agree with you, this is going to decline. Not just this and [motor fuel tax] but the income tax, personal property replacement tax, the use tax. Those are all going to be declining.”

McKittrick said all those sources of revenue either would decline because of a change in cost that reduces the tax, or because the state will appropriate more of those sources to balance its own budget.

According to the telecom tax report, the city received nearly $1 million in revenue from the tax from 2007 through 2010, then about $1.1 million a year through the 2012-13 fiscal year.

Revenue for May was $86,400, down 3.3 percent from May 2012, when it was nearly $90,000.

The telecom tax high revenue projection for the current fiscal year is just under $1.1 million; the low is $873,000, the report states.

City manager’s future still unclear

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles City Council approved yet another contract extension for City Manager Brian Townsend as the two parties continue to hash out details of a new contract.

City officials won’t say what is holding up contract talks because negotiations are ongoing. But Townsend’s current contract, inked in 2009, indicates that his severance package, should he be termi-

nated without cause, adds up to about $210,000.

Townsend earns about $217,000 annually, according to city officials, which includes a $600 monthly vehicle allowBrian ance and health Townsend insurance.

The severance package includes his aggregate salary plus all employment benefits, including accruals of sick leave,

holidays, personal leave and health insurance.

The vehicle allowance is not included, pushing the 12-month severance pay to about $210,000.

Townsend’s contract last was negotiated in 2009 and expired May 6, after Mayor Ray Rogina was seated to replace former Mayor Don DeWitte.

The City Council has approved three 30-day contract extensions since it expired, with the most recent extension approved Monday.

City officials said because

the contract is being negotiated, they won’t talk about the specifics and what issues remain outstanding in negotiations.

“I’m not going to discuss the particulars of it,” Rogina said earlier this week. “That’s about the limitation of the extent of what I want to say about the contract.”

Rogina said that Townsend’s performance has never been an issue and said he appreciates his acumen and knowledge.

DeWitte, who was mayor

when the 2009 contract was signed, said earlier this week that he didn’t think the council needed to engage in such “hardball negotiations” with Townsend, who he said has “established such a clear record of leadership.”

DeWitte said he is not sure what the sticking point is, but said Townsend is a city manager worth retaining.

“I’m not sure the risk is worth not having someone to lead St. Charles through many key projects coming in the future,” he said.

Mayor Rogina urges residents to shop local during Route 64 road work

ST. CHARLES – Since taking office in the spring, St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina has been concluding City Council meetings with a reminder to shop locally, especially at businesses along the line of construction on the east end of Route 64.

The construction has been ongoing since April 2012 and will continue through the end of the summer. Business owners said the project has taken a toll, which Rogina acknowledges.

“In a time where we have construction, nobody’s going to argue the fact that Route 64 construction probably has reduced sales to some of those businesses,” he said. “The community has to band together and say we have to help our brother.”

The construction from Seventh Avenue to Route 59 has caused a few headaches at Gino’s East in the 1500 block of East Main Street, manager Edward Pignataro said. Business during the weekdays has slowed he said, and construction has disrupted the restaurant’s phone lines and credit card machines.

“When the credit card machines are down and the phones are down, carry-outs and deliveries can’t be called in,” he said.

Pignataro said graduation parties, rehearsal dinners and busier weekends have helped offset the slower weekday pace, he said, but it still has forced management to make some tough decisions.

“We’ve had to make cuts as far as labor to compensate for the business loss,” he said. “I think people are still coming for the most part. It’s just not as much as they could be because of the construction, obviously.”

Rogina said he’s hopeful that the smooth pavement and the new center turn lane that will be in place once the construction is done will help

make up for any inconvenience.

“They’re trying to repair a road, and knowing when that’s done that it’s going to be beautiful – hopefully it’ll do a lot of offsetting,” he said.

Rogina said while the inconvenience is “regrettable,” the fifth lane will resolve a lot of traffic problems in that area

and will be nicely landscaped.

He said the construction is on schedule, and most of it should be concluded by the end of the summer. He said one stretch – from Seventh Avenue to Dunham Road – is scheduled to be finished by September.

Street, said traffic counts and transactions have been down since construction began in April 2012. But, like Rogina, he’s hopeful that all the construction will be worth it in the end.

“I’m definitely looking forward to it. You’ll have a center turn lane, and it’ll be easier to get in and out of our store

and back onto Main Street,” he said. “So in the end, I feel you’ve got to take the good with the bad.”

Rogina said money spent locally cycles back into the community because businesses, in turn, reinvest those dollars into the community.

To help bolster local shopping, the city this spring launched its first “Shop St. Charles Challenge.” The program rewards one person each month with $100 rebate on purchases made at three different independent stores or restaurants and runs through April.

Rogina said he reminds people to shop locally at the end of every City Council meeting because just about everyone benefits in the end.

“I make it a point to shop locally as much as I can with the idea that I’m helping local merchants,” he said. “There’s a multiplier effect throughout the community coming from that activity.”

Burger King in Batavia to close July 20

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia BATAVIA – After July 20, customers no longer will be able to have it their way at the Burger King at 107 N. Batavia Ave. in Batavia.

The restaurant will close that day after 25 years in business.

“It’s always been our smallest volume restaurant,” said Laurie Roscoe, director of operations for Gill Management, which owns and operates several Burger King restaurants in the Chicago area, including one in St. Charles. “It really hurt us when Chick-fil-A and Golden Corral opened.”

Chick-fil-A in February opened a restaurant along Randall Road in Batavia, and Golden Corral last November also opened a restaurant along Randall in Batavia. Roscoe said the growing Randall Road corridor also hurt the restaurant’s business.

Burger King sees about 450 customers a day at the Batavia restaurant, Roscoe said.

In comparison, the St. Charles location sees 1,000 customers a day, she said.

The Batavia Burger King opened for business in May 1988.

“I was the first manager to run the first shift on the first day of business,” Roscoe said.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said other national food chains have expressed interest in the site because the building has a drive-thru window.

“Everybody wants the drive-thru window,” Schielke

said.

He is hopeful Burger King is able to find another location in the city.

“I certainly think we are trying to keep the door open for them to open in another location,” Schielke said.

Later, with Hattie at his side and holding Don’s hand, they said goodnight to each other and Donald passed away serenely and peacefully in the early morning of Thursday, July 4, 2013.

Donald Earl Nippert was born Oct. 15, 1925, at the town’s old hospital on North Second Avenue.

He was a lifelong, fifth-generation resident, kin to some of St. Charles’ original settlers and whose Nippert prodigy includes three more generations of St. Charles Nipperts today.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl George Nippert and Harriet Augusta (McMaster) Nippert; his sister, Barbara Fay Nippert; and a son, David Earl Nippert.

He is survived by his wife, Hattie (Deutsch) Nippert; two sons, Thomas Earl and Daniel Edward married to Jill A. (Murphy) Nippert; five granddaughters, Ashley Nippert (Yoggerst), Whitney (Molsen), Kelsey, Melissa and Jennifer; two great-grandsons; and a great-granddaughter.

Throughout his life, Don always enjoyed camping, reading, traveling, fishing, golfing, boating, gardening, playing cards and being with friends. He was quite the linguist and a very wise man, wonderful, loving and the BEST father anyone could ever have. He loved to play the piano and he played in a local band in and around Kane County for many years.

In April 1943, Don or “Nip” as he was known to his friends, enlisted in the Army Reserve with the understanding that he would be called into active duty after his 18th birthday. On Dec. 11, 1943, he was ordered to Fort Sheridan, Ill., and from there to Fort Benning, Ga., where he completed his basic training.

Don was then transferred to Fort Jackson, S.C., for advanced basic training and while there, he joined the Paratroops. He was sent back to Fort Benning and completed his Paratrooper training in September 1944. He received the wings and boots of a Paratrooper and was sent to Fort Ord, Calif. At Fort Ord, he prepared for overseas action in the Pacific Theater of Operations with the US 11th Airborne Division.

However, because of injuries received while training, Don was ordered to “fall out,” and he was hospitalized for eight months at Fort Ord. In April of 1945, Don was transferred to Fort Douglas, Utah, and assigned to work in the Veter-

After dating Hattie for two months, Don received a furlough and he and Hattie returned to St. Charles, where they were married July 24, 1945. They spent their wedding night at the Sky Club in Aurora and their honeymoon on the train on the return trip to Salt Lake City. Don applied for and got permission to live off the post, and they continued to live in Salt Lake City until he was discharged March 4, 1946. They returned to St. Charles in September 1947. In June 1951, Don attended and graduated from Aurora College with a bachelor’s of science degree in business.

Don always thought and would like to tell people that fate had something to do with his injury, hospital stay and all of his transfers. And he felt it could only be, and I’m sure it was because, that the minute he had met Hattie, he had found the woman of his dreams and the woman he would spend nearly the next 68 years with. Why else, he confessed, must it have been besides their destinies of walking through life together.

In 1958, Don began work at the Howell Company in St. Charles as their manager of customer service.

After Howell closed in 1976, he took a position with DuKane Corporation as their traffic manager and continued to work there until his retirement in 1989.

During his lifetime, Don served

as a St. Charles alderman for 10 years. He was appointed by former President Bill Clinton to serve as member of the Northern Illinois Selective Service Board, and he served that appointment for eight years. Don was a member of the La Societe des Quarente Hommes et Huit Chevaux (the Society of Forty Men and Eight Horses) Organization known as the 40&8.

Don was a life member of the St. Charles American Legion Post 342 and at the time of his death, was the oldest living past commander.

In addition, for many years he served as president of the Legion’s Building Association.

Don loved St. Charles with a passion that not many newcomers that live there today could possibly imagine. It is to those who knew “Nip” that might take a moment to appreciate his devotion to the community of St. Charles.

He always was a pillar of support, inspiration, dedication, strength, devotion and leadership. He had the wisdom of a scholar and the love and respect of his family and friends and ALL that knew him.

Don is, and will be, truly missed.

The visitation will be from 10 a.m. until noon Monday, July 8, at Moss-Norris Funeral Home, 100 S. Third St., St. Charles, where the funeral service will follow at noon.

Suit filed in crash that killed North Aurora businessman

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A lawsuit has been filed by the family of a 61-year-old Sugar Grove man killed in February in a twocar collision in Batavia.

The family of David Schele Sr., who owned and operated the Close Encounters Collision Center in North Aurora for 30 years, filed a suit in June against Craig Schindlbeck of Oswego. The suit seeks damages of more than $50,000.

According to the suit,

Schele was driving a 2003 Toyota north on Randall Road near McKee Street about 8:20 p.m. Feb. 15 when he was struck by Schindlbeck, who was driving a 2002 Oldsmobile southbound on Randall and in the left turn lane to head east on McKee Street.

The Batavia Police Department on March 22 ticketed Schindlbeck for failure to yield while turning left.

He pleaded not guilty, and is scheduled to have a bench trial Aug. 7 at the Kane County Branch Court on Randall

Road in St. Charles.

The suit alleges that Schindlbeck failed to keep a proper lookout for Schele’s vehicle, failed to obey a traffic control device, failed to make a proper left-hand turn, failed to yield the right-ofway and was otherwise careless and negligent.

Schindlbeck could not be reached for comment.

The suit states that as a result of Schele’s death, the plaintiff, David A. Schele Jr., sustained great losses in the form of medical, funeral and burial expenses.

“It was important to Pride of the Fox to make this a community festival as well,” Farris said. “That’s what we are known for.”

Firin’ Up the Fox started last year during the RiverFest event in St. Charles. LivingWell Cancer Resource Center in Geneva will receive a portion of the proceeds from the event.

Welcome to the world, Manny GOOD NATURED Pam Otto Whoever said parenting is not for sissies knew exactly what he or she was talking about.

I know this because I’ve recently taken on the completely self-imposed challenge of life in the maternal fast lane. I’ve not only witnessed the birth (well, OK, hatching) of nearly 200 wee ones, but also have watched them take their first steps (gingerly, on six legs); eat their first meals (which consisted mostly of each other); take their first drinks of water (through tiny mandibles); and compete for survival, during which time many heads rolled – literally.

Eventually, after many trials and tribulations, one individual emerged victorious over his 190 or so siblings.

Welcome to the world, Manny – aka Tenodera sinensis, the Chinese mantid or praying mantis.

As his self-appointed guardian, I’ve more than once found myself on pins and needles as Manny has battled back from such setbacks as an incomplete molt (he dragged a portion of his shed skin around on one hind leg for several days); the day his world turned upside down (yeah … I dropped his jar); and most devastatingly, a prey insect that fought back, severing one of Manny’s front legs. (Note to self: Take ants off Manny’s menu.)

This foray into insect “parenthood” began two months ago when Jill Voegtle, a member of our ecological restoration team, brought in an egg case she’d found. Firmly attached to a stem of native honeysuckle, the case (also known as an ootheca) looked a lot like a blob of Great Stuff – that aerosol foam sealant you can buy at the hardware store – and a little like a roasted marshmallow. The stem soon joined our own collection of “great stuff” (assorted insects and their parts) that we use in teaching Bug Biographies, a program for local second-grad-

About 400 7- and 8-yearolds, plus teachers and parent volunteers, got to see the ootheca and speculate at its contents during the first few weeks of May. But the 100 or so students and assorted adults who came to Bugs the last week in May got to see the real deal – Manny and his dozens of brothers and sisters, duking it out inside a large jar.

We not only had an extremely visual representation of the mantids’ ability to control insect populations (namely their own), but we also had an ethical dilemma on our hands.

At Hickory Knolls we abide by a strict code of never taking native animals from the wild just to put them on display.

But Chinese mantids are from, well, China. Imported as a biological alternative to insecticides, they have been in this country for about 100 years. They can be found throughout the northeastern United States, and in recent years have become increasingly prevalent here in northern Illinois.

Even though they were

brought here intentionally, their presence now is being re-examined. They’re great predators of insects, yes, but they’re also indiscriminate.

While they prey upon the bugs we have in abundance, like grasshoppers, they’ll also eat their share of pollinators like honeybees – insects we have far too few of these days.

After a short debate, we decided we will keep Manny indoors. He will live out his days as a display animal, a member of the Hickory Knolls insect education squad.

The decision itself was relatively easy, but the effort to make it sustainable sometimes has been tough. After a long day at work, I often found myself heading, not to my car, but to the lights that dot Hickory Knolls’ exterior, to handpick teensy insects for baby Manny. Last weekend, instead of simply walking the dog, I took along an insect net and bug jar, to sweep the tall grass and gather somewhat larger insects for a somewhat larger Manny, who molted again last Sunday.

But the work has been worth it. Our boy has let us observe, up close and personal,

his growth and development, and helped us advance our knowledge of these amazingly complex creatures.

One of the first things we checked was Manny’s abdominal segments. We counted eight, confirming that he is indeed a male. (Female Chinese mantids have six abdominal segments. Despite this smaller number, females grow to be quite a bit larger than males and, somewhat famously, have proportionately larger appetites .)

We’ve also marveled at Manny’s astonishingly mobile head. Mantids are one of very few insects that possess a functional neck. They can and will move their heads to look you in the eye. The resulting effect is a creature that appears both wise and mysterious, with a dash of E.T. thrown in for good measure.

True to his order, the Mantodea, Manny did not pass through an ambiguous larval form but instead has looked like a classic mantid since Day One. With front legs raised and claws clasped, he’s been praying – actually, preying – ever since.

Even after his unfortunate

injury, which left him with just one raptorial forelimb, Manny is able to hunt with the best of them. He’ll stand stock-still, waiting, as his insect meal creeps ever closer.

Then, with lightning speed, he lashes out and pierces his prey with a needle-sharp tibial claw, grasping it against the spines that dot his tibia and femur. He then moves in with his powerful mandibles, gnashing and tearing the insect to bits. Afterward, he delicately nibbles his way along his foreleg, meticulously cleaning away leftover bug bits in preparation for his next ambush.

Now over an inch in length, Manny is magnificent and strong, a young mantid on a mission. Surrounded by small wings and legs – the crumbs of meals past – he’s no sissy, that’s for sure. I can only hope the same is true for me.

Commission can benefit from multiple viewpoints At first blush, it might seem that Zac Ploppert is an odd fit for the Geneva Historic Preservation Commission.

First Ward Alderman Mike Bruno, who served on the commission for more than a decade, certainly thought so. Bruno offered staunch opposition Monday to Mayor Kevin Burns’ recommended appointment of Ploppert to the seven-person advisory commission, citing strong sentiments that Ploppert expressed during his unsuccessful campaign, in which he emphasized property owners’ rights over

preserving Geneva’s historic character when those priorities clash.

There is the obvious back-story of Bruno and Ploppert having waged a sometimes testy city council campaign against one another earlier this year, but even giving Bruno the benefit of the doubt that his concerns about Ploppert’s qualifications were not personal, we fail to see why Bruno and 4th Ward Alderman Dorothy Flanagan cast dissenting votes for his appointment to the Historic Preservation Commission.

A diversity of viewpoints on a committee is generally for the best; it provides checks and balances so essential to effective government.

In no way do we diminish the value of Geneva’s historic charm, especially in and around downtown. That is a central part of the city’s allure.

But as we have seen in recent debates, such as a high-profile dust-up about the Pure Oil building, knee-jerk determinations to preserve historic buildings at all costs are not always practical.

There are many property

owners around town who have grown tired of the many restrictions in Geneva’s historic district – perhaps that is why the race between Bruno and Ploppert was decided by about 50 votes – and it would be a disservice not to have those views represented on the commission.

It also is worth noting that, as an advisory board, the Geneva Historic Preservation Commission does not establish policy. Even if Ploppert wanted to take a wrecking ball to every last Italianate house downtown, he lacks the power to do much harm.

Hopefully Ploppert – a Class of 2008 Geneva High School graduate – surprises his critics and takes an open-minded approach to the issues that come before the commission.

Regardless of whether you agree with his viewpoints, it is refreshing to see a young person take an interest in public service.

We need more 20- and 30-somethings to take that initiative and add fresh perspectives to our communities, even if they’re not always in lock-step with the establishment.

No fate for Obamacare THE WASHINGTON POST The Obama administration Tuesday announced that it was delaying one of the Affordable Care Act’s mandates – a requirement that medium and large employers offer good health-care coverage to their workers or pay penalties based on the number of workers left uncovered.

White House officials said that the administration had been hearing from businesses and wanted to simplify the rules before imposing reporting requirements and assessing penalties. Others weren’t so sanguine. “This is a clear acknowledgment that the law is unworkable,” House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, declared.

Actually, it’s not. While the administration’s move could be part of a White House political strategy to avoid overheated attacks from Republicans during the 2014 election year, it is no policy disaster, and it

certainly doesn’t indict the whole law.

Under the law, all Americans next year will have to obtain insurance from somewhere – from their employers, or from an expanded Medicaid program if they are poor, or on new, subsidized insurance marketplaces the government is setting up for better off individuals seeking coverage. The individual mandate and the new insurance marketplaces are the core of Obamacare, and they are still scheduled to start on time.

But what will opening those marketplaces do to the employer-provided insurance that many Americans are used to? Might companies choose to drop health-care coverage that they had been offering their workers, handing them over to the marketplaces? These concerns prompted Congress to formally integrate the vast, employer-based insurance system into its 2010 reform, too.

They are arrogant, and they are quick with the finger. They refuse to obey any traffic-control devices and act like they own the road. And I am speaking about adults here, not children.

Love voting as much as you love the Hawks I watch TV and read the local papers and all this hullaballoo about the Blackhawks winning the Stanley Cup, and I’m very happy for them and very proud of them. And I see millions of people downtown celebrating this win, and all I could think of was, wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could get all of those citizens out, in the same number of droves, to vote in our elections? Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could get that number of people out to let

the senators and congressmen know what we want and what we don’t want? Wouldn’t it be wonderful if our people took as much pride in their country and their government as they do in a win by the Blackhawks? I don’t want to diminish the win by the Blackhawks, but I sure wish people would understand that this country is their country. And if they would demonstrate the same loyalty and the same support for their country as they do for the Blackhawks, our country would be the strongest country in the world. It is not that today.

We are fast becoming a thirdworld nation. Please, get out and vote. Please, contact your senators and congressmen on this immigration bill. Please, contact your senators and congressmen and let them know what we, the citizens, want, not what they’re bribed by corporations to get.

They represent us Our elected officials, whether they go to Washington, Springfield or a local city council meeting, have been elected by us to represent us. I will repeat that, they have been elected, by the people, to represent the people who put them in office. They are not there to do their own bidding or vote along party lines.

They are there to represent the people and do what the majority of the people who put them in that office in the first place want them to do. Let’s get back to government of the people, by the people and for the people.

Dryden did no harm I haven’t been following the story about the social studies teacher John Dryden, but from what I read in Sound Off, the school board has censored him for informing his students about their rights under the Constitution. I thought school is where you learned about the Constitution. Dryden was showing students how to exercise their rights. The school board has gone too far with this.

It shouldn’t even be an issue. I don’t see the harm done.

It’s past time for a change Today is July 4, 2013. It is the United States’ Independence Day. And it makes me realize

that during our lifetime and our forefathers’ lifetime, that when the going got tough and things went wrong, we didn’t run from our country. We stayed here and fixed it. I am so fed up with all these illegal immigrants coming into this country and not trying to be Americans but demanding that signs be put in Spanish, demanding that voting registration forms be in Spanish, demanding special treatment. What happened to being loyal American citizens?

And what about these churches standing up and saying, we’ve got to take care of these people. What happened to give unto Caesar what is Caesar’s and give unto God what is God’s, when it comes to forcing and obeying the laws? Is it OK for some people to be lawless, and the rest of us have to pay for it? Is it right for people like Blagojevich and Ryan to go to jail for corruption, while illegal immigrants and their parents make fraudulent identifications.

Is it OK that these people steal our jobs? Why should we care about illegal immigrants?

What about their children? If an American citizen had a child and put it in a dangerous position, for something as simple as having improperly putting in a car seat, their kids would be taken away. Why aren’t illegal immigrants’ kids taken away?

It’s past time for a change.

That, I would never do. I’m in my mid-60s. If you own property and you are sick, then you go into a nursing home or assisted living and sell your place. You do not need to leave anything to your kids. I see my relatives once a year, and they all drive. I will not purchase a long-term health care. I don’t intend to leave anything to the relatives. You can also get a helper or a companion or a caregiver. I have a caregiver.

And if I need to go to doctors appointments, where I need to have somebody drive me, I have them. It’s a lot cheaper than going to a retirement community.

That performance isn’t sitting well with the public, who on average earn far less than lawmakers and can’t take as many breaks from the office.

A June Gallup Poll found 78 percent of Americans disapprove of the way Congress does its job.

While most members of Congress earn $174,000 annually, the median household income in the U.S. was $50,054 in 2011, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

So far, the House and Senate have had eight complete weeks away from Washington, though the Congressional Record documents brief sessions – one lasted just three minutes – when legislative housekeeping was done in an all-but-empty chamber on a few of those days. Both chambers are scheduled to be gone for almost the whole month of August and the first week of September.

Most weeks, the first votes are scheduled at 5:30 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. on Monday, and lawmakers often leave by Thursday evening.

It’s far from a typical American work schedule.

In a 2008 survey by Opinion Research Corp., 52 percent of respondents reported taking one week or less of paid vacation the previous year. Those figures have only gotten worse since the economic downturn, said John De Graft, who heads the vacation advocacy group Take Back Your Time.

Lawmakers’ time away is hardly a vacation, according to staff members. Those weeks away from Washington, formally called “district work periods,” are designed to provide time for work-related travel (Sen. Deb Fischer, R-Neb., for instance, was in Afghanistan this week) or for office hours and town meetings back home.

“It’s critical for members to have district work periods to hear from their constituents on a variety of matters, including chronic unemployment, the Senate’s inaction on student loans and the next steps toward addressing immigration and our debt crisis,” said Rory Cooper, an aide to House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va. ings can turn nasty. In August 2009, as Congress considered sweeping changes to the health insurance system, town-hall meetings erupted into shouting matches.

Rep. John Carter, R-Texas, a member of a bipartisan group of House members that’s drafting an immigration overhaul plan, said he’s bracing for heated August meetings, similar to what members experienced when they last considered immigration changes in 2006.

“I expect the big push from both sides to be over August like we experienced the last time we tried to bring this up,” said Carter before the July 4 break. “There are a lot of people who weren’t here in ’06 and don’t remember how rough that was. We ought to be warning them because it is rough.”

WASHINGTON – The current Congress, facing a backlog of unfinished business and sliding approval ratings, is on pace to clear fewer bills than its predecessor – which had the least number of measures signed into the law since modern record keeping began in the 1940s.

Since the 113th Congress convened in January, the Senate has been in session 80 days and the House 84 days.

Lawmakers passed 15 bills that were then signed by the president. That’s eight fewer than in the first six months of the last Congress and 19 fewer than in the same stretch of the 111th Congress.

“The 113th Congress is on track to be even less productive than the historic 112th Congress,” said Thomas Mann, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington. “The problem arises from a Republican House unwilling and unable to engage in the normal process of negotiation and compromise with the president,

and their continued willingness to live with a destructive sequester.”

Left undone have been major pieces of legislation including a budget agreement and a farm and food-aid policy bill.

Lawmakers missed a July 1 deadline to prevent subsidized Stafford student loans from doubling to 6.8 percent.

While the Senate passed a comprehensive immigration overhaul bill and farm legislation, the House hasn’t charted a way forward on either issue.

Ronald Peters, a congressional historian at the University of Oklahoma, said output is closely linked to party ideology.

L

iza Fruendt’s summer isn’t exactly carefree, but what it lacks in serenity is balanced out in excitement.

The Batavia senior and reigning Kane County Chronicle Girls Basketball Player of the Year is transitioning from the high school segment of summer basketball to an AAU-intensive July with her powerhouse AAU program, the Lady Lightning.

All the while, Fruendt has had a couple major decisions in the back of her mind – her college basketball future, and whether she will continue on with tennis, another sport in which she’s thrived throughout her Bulldogs career.

“There are a couple decisions I’ve got to make,” Fruendt said.

At least on the recruiting front, Fruendt’s options are expanding. A recent scholarship offer from Northern Illinois followed others from Youngstown State and Northern Kentucky, and Batavia girls basketball coach Kevin Jensen said several Missouri Valley Conference programs also are showing interest in the 5-foot-9 guard.

As some of her teammates and acquaintances from various basketball circles add scholarship offers, Jensen said he’s seen Fruendt’s resolve and focus continue to grow.

“She’s been kind of motivated a little extra,” Jensen said.

During a highly challenging summer schedule for the Bulldogs – which closed earlier this week – Fruendt’s talent and leadership were sorely needed.

Jensen switched the Bulldogs from their former summer circuit at Glenbard South to a league at Trinity High School. It made for a longer drive but also met Jensen’s objective of the Bulldogs battling top-notch competition. Jensen said Batavia

“I knew our returners would be able to handle it,” Jensen said. “They all play for high-level AAU programs. The worry was the girls who are moving from the lower levels to the varsity level. That’s a jump in itself, and now jumping to an even higher level, how they’d respond. … At first I was wondering, was this a good decision, but we had a lot of girls grow up real quick and realize, oh, I need to play this hard the whole time and not just skate by the rest of the time.”

Fruendt acknowledged “shock” on the part of some Bulldogs playing against state powerhouses but thought it was beneficial that many of her younger teammates didn’t know just how challenging those opponents would be.

“Erin [Bayram] and I

would be like, ‘We’re playing Rolling Meadows tonight, they went down to the state final game,’ so you kind of think about that, but they don’t really know,” Fruendt said. “I think it was better for them because they didn’t know how good they were until we either beat them or lost.”

Fruendt, who averaged 19.7 points a game for the 18-11 Bulldogs last season, is a combo guard. She said some college programs view her as more of a point guard and others as more of an off-guard, and she’s open to playing either.

She’ll have plenty of size with which to play off next season at Batavia as the 6-foot-2 Bayram, a senior, and 6-1 sophomore Hannah Frazier both return. Capitalizing on that duo more effectively is a goal the Bulldogs worked toward this summer.

“We’re trying to get it stuck in our head, the highlow aspect, so I think this year [the coaches will] be

able to make them realize the high-low all the time because I think that could be a really good thing for us if they’re comfortable, one up high, one down low,” Fruendt said. ... “I think it will really help us if they can get used to getting comfortable together and trust each other.”

Fruendt said Bayram’s younger sister, sophomore Shea Bayram, is among the newcomers who caught her eye this summer as the Bulldogs look to reload and continuing the ascent they’ve made under Jensen.

“We had a five-game improvement in my first year.

We had another five-game improvement last year, and we’ve talked about how the goal was another five-game improvement leading in to this year,” Jensen said.

“They realize it’s the same increment but each time it’s much harder. The degree of difficulty will go up exponentially as far as what they’re going to have to be putting in.”

Is keeping the energy going ever a chore given how amped volleyball players can be?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s usually not hard with volleyball players because weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re usually excited all the time. There sometimes are points you have to pump it up, but usually the girls are good because theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re always excited to play.

What did you take away from contributing to the varsity as a sophomore?

The skill level is a lot higher and you see a lot of different types of play. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a lot more planning involved, and scouting is a lot more important at the varsity level.

Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the outlook for this season for Batavia? Any remaining club tournaments?

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m just really excited for the upcoming season. I think itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to be a good season this year, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m just excited to start. ... Club ended at nationals and so usually girls go to one or two camps with their club and devote the rest to their high school teams.

All quiet on Starai front: Asquini said he was still unsure if right-handed pitcher Matt Starai had made his college decision.

Starai, the Kane County Chronicle Baseball Player of the Year, could not be reached for comment Friday, but recently indicated he was closing in on making a late decision on where heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d go next year.

Starai said last month that he was considering Heartland and Parkland community colleges downstate as well as Lee University in Tennessee, a four-year school that is transitioning to Division II. Starai went 11-1 with a 0.59 ERA this spring for the Saints, who finished in third place in Class 4A.

The summer baseball setup around the Tri-Cities has undergone changes this year, including the addition of a conference tournament that begins Monday at the East Side Sports Complex in St. Charles.

The eight-team tournament will run Monday through Wednesday and will be played with wood bats.

It was bracketed based on teamsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; results as part of a new conference structure implemented for summer baseball.

St. Charles North is the tournamentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top seed, followed by West Chicago (2), Batavia (3), South Elgin (4), Geneva (5), St. Charles East (6), Larkin (7) and Kaneland (8).

Games will be played Monday and Tuesday at East Side Sports Complex at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. each day before shifting to St. Charles North on Wednesday.

The eight teams participating are part of what has been called the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Wayne DeMaarâ&#x20AC;? division, named for the former St. Charles High athletic director.

North coach Todd Genke is a fan of the new, locally driven summer scheduling. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think the games have been much closer to what the spring would be, much closer games, so weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve won our fair share of those games,â&#x20AC;? Genke said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m seeing a lot of good things from the younger guys.â&#x20AC;?

Batavia junior libero Maddie Jaudon recently helped her Sports Performance 16 Blue club volleyball team to a first-place finish at the AAU National Championships in Orlando, Fla. Sports Performance topped a tournament that included 46 teams, highlighting another strong showing for the program in the Sunshine State. Kane County Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley caught up with Jaudon about the experience for the latest edition of the Weekend Chit-chat.

Team wins 2 games in a row in second half for first time

By DENNIS D. JACOBS editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – A five-run eighth-inning rally Friday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark gave the Kane County Cougars something they haven’t had in Gioskar Amaya the second half of the Midwest League season – back-to-back wins.

The 8-7 victory over Quad Cities also guaranteed the Cougars (34-47 overall, 4-11 second half) at least at least two wins in the five-game series. The Cougars have not won a series since taking two out of three games at Burlington a month ago.

Kane County manager Mark Johnson said he hoped the rally will give his team a spark.

“We’ve been resilient offensively all year,” he said.

“Our defense has let us down quite a bit. Our pitching has let us down sometimes, but our offense has always battled back.”

The Cougars entered the bottom of the eight trailing,

6-3. Three walks and a hit batter helped plate a pair of runs, and Giuseppe Papaccio – making his Cougars debut – tied the game with a two-strike single up the middle off John Neely (2-5).

“He left one in a little bit and I just got a tiny bit of barrel on it,” Papaccio said. “I just got it through the infield.

I was just trying to stay short with two strikes.”

Gioskar Amaya followed with a bloop double down the right field line to give the Cougars an 8-6 lead.

Justin Amlung gave up a run in the ninth on a two-out single by Roberto Pena, but picked up the save, his first of the season Pena was 4 for 5 at the plate with three RBIs. His single in the top of the eighth snapped a 3-3 tie and was part of a threerun rally by the River Bandits off Cougars reliever Lendy Castillo.

Despite giving up those runs, Castillo (2-5) picked up the victory thanks to the Cougars’ rally in the bottom of the frame.

‘TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE’ CHICAGO – On every one of his soccer teams, Gerardo Alvarez was a playmaker.

Club teams. Playmaker.

Marmion Academy. Playmaker.

Northwestern. Playmaker.

Today, that role will change, as will Alvarez’s life.

He will share the field with global superstar Lionel Messi and a slew of other internationally famous soccer players as part of a “Messi & Friends” charity match at Soldier Field.

“I’m still thinking it’s too good to be true,” said Alvarez, a 2003 graduate of Marmion.

“I’m not fully going to believe it until I’m on the field.

“On most of the teams I’ve ever played on, I’ve always been the playmaker, the creative mind. On this team, I already know I have to connect the passes and let those guys do the magic.”

Because every one of those guys – starting with Messi – is a magician.

Then again, Alvarez’s story contains some magic, as well.

Up until a few weeks ago, Alvarez figured his competi-

He had been an all-state player at Marmion, where he earned Kane County Chronicle All-Area honors, and he carried that success to Northwestern, where he was named Co-Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2003 and finished his college career with 28 goals, including nine game-winners.

Great teams. Great memories. But, like a soccer ball, time rolls on.

Fast forward to the summer of 2013. Alvarez, 28, was working as a branch manager at Chase Bank in Woodridge (after all, the guy has a degree from Northwestern).

His phone rang. On the other line was his old college coach, Tim Lenahan, who had been tabbed to be an assistant coach for one of the squads in the Messi charity game.

It turned out that Messi & Friends needed a few extra players to fill out the rosters.

Alvarez: Are you kidding?

Since then, Alvarez has started his mornings with training runs before heading to work. He wants to be as ready as possible for his oncein-a-lifetime opportunity.

At the same time, Alvarez is not stressed about playing alongside Messi, 26, who already is a four-time FIFA Ballon d’Or award winner as the world’s best player.

Alvarez is smiling. He’s laughing. He’s marveling at life’s wild surprises.

Wouldn’t you be?

“It’s comical that I’m going to step on the same field as Messi,” Alvarez said with a chuckle. “Only in America do you walk out of the office as a branch manager on a Friday, and you lace up your boots and you play with Messi on a Saturday.”

Alvarez played coy as he brought up the subject with his father, Enrique, an avid soccer fan who lives in Yorkville.

The gist of the conversation went something like this:

Son: Did you hear about the game with Messi at Soldier Field? Do you want to go?

Dad: Nah. Son: You should go.

Dad: Nah. Son: What if I told you I was playing?

“I thought he was joking,” Enrique Alvarez said. “I said, ‘You’ve got to be kidding.’ ” He wasn’t.

“We’re still in shock,” Enrique Alvarez said.

For Alvarez to play in the star-studded game would be a big deal regardless, but especially because his family is from Argentina. They moved here in 1991.

Messi, of course, is from Argentina. You should see him again in the World Cup and the Olympics as he pursues more milestones in his already remarkable career.

As for Saturday, Enrique and Miriam Alvarez will be at Soldier Field to see their son.

Other relatives will watch elsewhere. The game will be on ESPN starting at 6 p.m.

Michal Rozsival and Michal Handzus will be back when the puck drops next season. Viktor Stalberg and Ray Emery will be elsewhere.

“Take whatever sport is your favorite sport,” Alvarez said. “Or take your icon, your idol, growing up. And try and picture getting a phone call and asking you to go on the field and play with this person in his prime.”

Alvarez laughs again. He jokes that he hopes to sign with a European team after this.

“I think the only thing that can top this is meeting the pope,” Alvarez said.

Ah, yes. Pope Francis. He’s from Argentina, too.

Who knows? Maybe he’ll call next week.

The roster moves were announced Friday during a busy day of free-agent signings across the league. Much of the Hawks’ offseason work already had been completed after they had re-signed Bryan Bickell and Nick Leddy to multi-year contracts while trading Dave Bolland and Michael Frolik to clear salary-cap space.

Rozsival, 34, agreed to a two-year contract after tallying 12 assists in 27 regular-season games and four assists in 23 playoff games. His deal means that the Hawks

will return all seven of their top defenseman: Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, Niklas Hjalmarsson, Johnny Oduya, Rozsival, Leddy and Sheldon Brookbank.

Handzus, 36, thrived with the Hawks after he was acquired as part of a midseason trade with the San Jose Sharks.

He notched six points in 11 regular-season games with the Hawks before adding 11 points in 23 playoff games.

Khabibulin’s starts have diminished in the past few seasons, but he might be effective in small doses. In

12 appearances this season with the Edmonton Oilers, he went 4-6-1 with a 2.54 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage.

Although the departures of Stalberg and Emery will weaken the Hawks, their decisions to sign with other teams were expected. Stalberg signed a four-year deal with the Nashville Predators after a quiet playoff run that included two stints as a healthy scratch, while Emery signed a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Flyers because they offered him the opportunity to make more starts in net.

Lynch, Lewis named to Hornung Award watch list DeKALB – Northern Illinois quarterback Jordan Lynch and wide receiver Tommylee Lewis have been named to the Paul Hornung Award watch list. The award is given to the nation’s most versatile player.

NIU and Florida are the only schools with two players on the list. The 44-player list includes four other Mid-American Conference representatives – Kent State’s Dri Archer, Bowling Green’s Jerry Gates, Toledo’s Bernard Reedy and Ball State’s Jamill Smith.

Last season, the award went to West Virginia’s Tavon Austin.

Boneheaded plays stand out Starlin Castro picked off second, Cubs make multiple mistakes CHICAGO – The elimination of dumb on-field mistakes is one of the most noticeable differences between the best teams in baseball and the worst.

The Cubs could learn a thing or two from the Pirates, co-owners of the best record after Friday’s 6-2 win at Wrigley Field. The number of boneheaded plays the Cubs (36-48) have committed this season is approaching their win total, and they were at it again against Pittsburgh.

“In baseball, every mistake stands out,” manager Dale Sveum said.

Shortstop Starlin Castro was responsible for the most glaring miscue. With the Cubs trailing by four runs in the eighth inning, Castro, on second following a twoout double, was easily – and embarrassingly – picked off

by Pirates catcher Russell Martin, who delivered a laser throw from home. It ended the inning, and the Cubs went down quietly in the ninth.

“It’s not a smart play,” Castro said. “I feel really, really bad. That can’t happen. … I try to be aggressive, but that can’t happen.”

When Sveum was questioned about the play, he was rightly exasperated by Castro’s decision to take such a large lead when he would likely score on a hit. Castro’s mistake was the Cubs’ third avoidable miscue.

VIEWS Meghan Montemurro Center fielder Dave Sappelt took a terrible route on Neil Walker’s fly ball in the third, resulting in a triple.

Walker later scored to give the Pirates the lead.

The Cubs gifted the Pirates (53-32) another run that same inning when catcher Dioner Navarro thought it was a good idea to try and throw out Garrett Jones at second as Jose Tabata struck out for the second out. Instead, the throw was off-target and Andrew McCutchen, who was at third base, scored easily, credited for stealing home.

“I think we have what it takes, but unfortunately it hasn’t been working out the way we want it to go,” Navarro said.

In the toughest division in baseball with three teams – the Pirates, Cardinals and Reds – owning three of the best records in the majors, a combined 152-102, the Cubs have no chance at staying competitive if they don’t play better against their National League Central rivals. The Cubs have been awful in the division with an 11-26 record.

Their .297 winning percentage is the lowest in the majors by any team against its own division. Yes, even worse

than the Marlins and Astros.

“We understand we need to put a solid game together when we play them and bring our A game against those top three teams on the top of our division,” pitcher Jeff Samardzija said. “ … You can’t give them windows of opportunities. They take advantage of them. They don’t give cheap outs. They don’t make mistakes on the base paths so therefore you’ve got to be on the top of your game too.”

The Cubs have given no indication they’re capable of doing that. Samardzija’s struggles getting Pirates starting pitcher Francisco Liriano out highlighted the Cubs’ problems: an RBI single after intentionally walking the No. 8 hitter in the second and a four-pitch walk to start the sixth.

And the Cubs still have 39 games remaining against division opponents. Buckle up.

“If you want to beat these good teams on the top of your division, pitchers can’t get hits, pitchers can’t get walked,” Samardzija said.

“Bottom line.”

Enjoying a relaxing ‘staycation’ with Holly

I’ve been hanging with Holly this week.

Her dad and brother headed in different directions on their own adventures, so we girls held down the fort and enjoyed our very own “staycation” until they returned.

We had slumber parties every night with our big red dog and intrepid cat, watched movies (“Little Women” is next!), slept in, played cards, fooled around on the piano, went to my yoga class, enjoyed lunch at “our” table in the window at the Thai Village restaurant in Batavia and read. A lot. It’s been lovely.

Lovely, too, is that fact that “the house stays cleaner when the boys aren’t around,” Holly noted. Perhaps, but I think she generously overlooked the mess in my bedroom when she made that comment.

With her at the helm, though, we made quick work of the clean laundry strewn about my room and enjoyed a mini-fashion show, during which we both tried on – and she inherited – a couple of T’s and a sundress of mine that somehow look fabulous on her 12-year-old frame.

When did she grow so tall? After that my room was ship-shape, but she needed new flip-flops – and I needed a new sundress – so off we went on a bargain hunt. Mission accomplished, thanks to my stylist.

“Girl, the reason it doesn’t fit is you put it on backwards,” Holly quipped,

“Hmm, maybe,” I replied as I puzzled over the fine print in the description. So maybe it wasn’t fine print. Whatever. I never have my readers with me when I need them.

“Maybe isn’t one of the options, Mom,” Holly said, as she noted the ever-lengthening line, so I caved and got it. (I don’t even like Woody Allen films. So why do I keep watching them?)

This week we also scored a bargain on a barely-used pet stroller, when we pitched in at the Naperville Area Human Society.

It’s been a long time since I had a stroller in my life, but it’s perfect for Posey, our nearly 9-year-old Maine-Coon cat, a feline quite frustrated with life indoors.

As soon as we arrived home we took Jake and Posey for a walk, with Holly at the helm of Posey’s new “wheels.” My daughter is getting quite good at being at the helm.

“They’re gonna think there’s a baby in here,” Holly quipped, as she pushed the stroller down the sidewalk Tuesday afternoon.

“Yeah, if anyone we know sees us they’ll think either you had one, or I did,” I said, laughing nervously at the notion, unsure which scenario unnerved me more.

Here’s hoping it’s a very long time before my baby pushes a real stroller, becomes a caretaker in her own right.

In some ways, she already has.

It’s funny how roles reverse as we all grow up. And how, in the process, we sometimes catch glimpses of each other’s vulnerabilities, vulnerabilities which seem, interestingly, to inspire our own growth.

Some moments are amusing, for example, this making fun in a department store dressing room of my disturbing lack of vanity, so apparent and yet so relevant to a young girl just becoming aware of her own. We got another taste, too, this week, of a different kind of absentmindedness,

when we spent time with my friend’s aging mom.

We brought her with us to the quarry, after which we briefly returned to our house to let out the big red dog.

But then the sky opened up and Mother Nature took an invigorating shower.

So instead of immediately returning our new friend to her daughter’s home at the appointed time, we put on the kettle, pulled out the chocolate chip cookies, and settled in for a game of Uno. The game lasted longer than the storm, but it was long enough for Holly and her buddy, Rachel, also along for the afternoon, to learn how to “play along” when the rules of the game – and of life – shift without warning.

We enjoyed our day with our new friend, perhaps an unwitting teacher of this lesson, more than we’d anticipated we would.

I observed as this dear woman compensated for what had become confusing, and watched as my young daughter made sense of it, too, and stepped up to help fill in new gaps.

It was just one Uno game, but really, it was so much more.

Sometimes growth really does happen in the blink of an eye.

Annual plants you must try this summer

Celosia plants love sun and heat and can grow colorful plumes of flowers.

all summer long at the top of small mounds. Plant these in containers or at the edge of your patio where you can enjoy all the winged visitors.

Ornamental Millet – Ornamental Millet is an annual grass that can grow from two to five feet tall with wide leaf blades. Very large bottlebrush fuzzy spikes of brownish purple to maroon begin in mid summer and continue into fall.

These bold foliage accents highlight any flowering annual both in beds and mixed together in containers.

My favorite is Jade Princess. Wide, chartreuse leaves highlight any other flowering annual in containers or in the garden. I planted it in a large container with purple fountain grass, Inky Fingers coleus, bright yellow and magenta flowers, and sweet potato vines.

Vinca – Flowering vinca has been around a long time for good reason. It is drought-tolerant and doesn’t need deadheading. The foliage is glossy and dark green with a leathery appearance. The flowers are in just about every shade of red, rose, lavender, pink and white – some with a contrasting eye. It blooms profusely all summer long.

Visit your local garden center and check out what’s blooming now. It may offer a new palette of plants to add to your landscape.

When people shop for their summer flowers around Mother’s Day, they miss these beauties still growing in greenhouses waiting to burst into beauty with longer and warmer days.

Angelonia – Angelonia is commonly called summer snapdragon because its flowers resemble those of the snapdragon. Flower spikes in shades of pink, rose, purple or white rise from bushy dark green mounds. There are shorter types – about a foot tall – and taller varieties up to three feet tall. I love the Archangel series. They are shorter in stature but have larger flowers.

Whichever kind you choose, they flower heavily from early summer to frost. Angelonia plants love the sun and perform beautifully in the garden or containers through the hottest summer weather.

Celosia – Another sun and heat lover, celosia boasts large plumes of flowers in shades of yellow, gold, orange, red and pink. Showy in the garden or in containers, the flowers can be cut for bouquets and also dried.

I fell in love with a new variety this year – Tornado Red. Instead of flower plumes, it blooms in loose, large, velvety magenta cockscombs with lots of side shoots. Stunning!

‘Little Angels’ an enthralling coming-of-age mystery novel

By DA KENTNER More Content Now Among Michael Hiebert’s accolades is that he won the Surrey International Writer’s Conference Storyteller’s Award twice – in a row. A Canadian family man, Michael isn’t shy about exploring the mysteries that tingle our spines and set our minds adrift wondering about the world and people around us.

Much of his work to date has been short stories released in anthologies, such as “Edges: Collected Stories of Mystery,” which includes the award-winning “My Lame Summer Journal” and “Not Forgotten” containing the award-winning story “But Not Forgotten.”

Though Michael, rightfully, should be considered a mystery author, his protagonists are generally young adult, and he in fact wrote the novel “Dolls,” an entertaining, yet somewhat disturbing, story of a young girl who discovers she has the power through dolls to hurt people.

But fear not. The story has a happy ending with a lesson about responsibility well learned.

Now Michael has released “Dream with Little Angels.”

Once again the story is told through the eyes of a child, this time being 11-year-old Abe Teal, the son of Alvin, Ala., investigator Leah Teal.

Where this story stands out is the uniqueness of portraying the events through Abe’s eyes, because the story itself began a dozen years before Abe’s birth. Abe witnesses his mother Leah’s frustrations at not having solved a child’s murder, and how the killings may have started again. Then

the nightmare comes home to fully roost when Abe’s sister goes missing. “Dream with Little Angels” is quality storytelling sure to keep readers enthralled and waiting for the sequel, “Close to the Broken Hearted,” due out next year.

Q. The obvious question: Why elect to tell many of your stories through the eyes of children, especially since “Dream with Little Angels” is as much about Leah, the mother, as Abe? A. The main reason was because Abe offered the best opportunity to get across the sense of innocence to the reader that I really wanted to achieve. The book is really a coming-of-age story wrapped in a mystery (or maybe it’s the other way around), and the only way I could convincingly portray that was to get readers close enough to Abe that they could ignore (at times) what was going on in the other parts of the story. It was a very tough job balancing the horror part of the story with the sweetness of childhood.

Q. For years, you have been a writer other writers brag about having met, but have remained relatively unknown to the mainstream of readers. “Dream with Little Angels” suddenly has interviewers scrambling for your attention and bookstores waiting to place the novel on their shelves.

How have you dealt with this turn of events?

A. It’s funny, because my mentor, Kristine Kathryn Rusch, told me eight or nine years ago that I was going to be a successful novelist. I’m not sure why everything took as long as it did, but I think it’s good that it did. Any success I do have now, I have the maturity to deal with it. I’m not sure I would have been able to deal with these “turn

Q. I have to ask; what in the world inspired “Dolls”? That book is anything but “expected.”

A. “Dolls” came out of nowhere. I was playing with my daughter one day, doing crafts, and she was making paper dolls. And then my mind just made the next leap: what if that were a paper doll of somebody. Then of course, the next step: and what if we ran over it with her brother’s Tonka truck? Doesn’t every-

one think this way?

Q. Any parting thoughts for fans and readers new to your work?

A. I would just like to say how much I appreciate their interest in my work and that I hope I can continue to write stories that entertain them.

There are a lot of books out there, and it means a lot to me that they’re showing interest in mine when they have so many different ones to choose from. I’ll try to keep the surprises coming.

Strength training is important part of fitness Dear Doctor K: I exercise regularly, running or playing tennis several times a week. I’d like to add strength training to my routine. Anything I should know before I start?

Dear Reader: Strength training should be part of everyone’s exercise routine. I ignored it for years and just did aerobic exercise.

Despite substantial aerobic exercise every day, and my resulting cardiovascular fitness, I noticed my muscle bulk slowly shrinking.

Strength training increases muscle mass, tones muscles and strengthens bones. It helps you maintain the strength you need for everyday activities – lifting groceries, climbing stairs or rising from a chair. What’s more, it helps prevent or treat a variety of conditions, including osteoporosis, back pain, arthritis, diabetes, heart disease and obesity.

Strength-training exercises build muscle by making them strain against an opposing force.

Examples include pushing against a wall, lifting a dumbbell or pulling on a resistance band.

Try to do strengthening exercises for all major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, chest, abdomen, shoulders and arms) at least twice

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff a week. Start with one set – usually 8 to 12 repetitions of the same movement – per session. Over time, work your way up to two to three sets per session.

Here are some more tips to keep your strength training safe and effective: 1. Warm up and cool down for five to 10 minutes. Walking is a fine way to warm up; stretching is an excellent way to cool down.

2. Focus on form, not weight.

Align your body correctly and move smoothly through each exercise. Poor form can prompt injuries and slow gains.

3. The first weight you start to lift should be a weight that you can lift eight times in succession.

If you can’t do that, you’ve started with too much weight.

4. Keep challenging your muscles. When it feels too easy, add weight.

5. Concentrate on slow, smooth lifts and equally controlled descents. Take three seconds to lift a weight. Hold it for one second.

Then take four seconds to slowly drop the weight. Controlling the downward movement of the weight is as important to building muscle strength as lifting up the weight.

6. Don’t be concerned if you have a little muscle soreness after you start strength training. That’s normal, and it should go away.

7. On the other hand, if the training causes sudden sharp pain anywhere, don’t try to “push through the pain.” Talk to a physical therapist or trainer; something is wrong, and you could make it worse by pushing too hard.

8. Pay attention to your breathing. Exhale as you work against resistance by lifting, pushing or pulling; inhale as you release.

9. Give your muscles at least 48 hours to recover between strength-training sessions.

You can do a lot to protect your health with regular strength training – done right.

Dr. Wallace: I’m a 15-year-old girl who needs some advice. My 20-year-old cousin (a female) has been living in our family’s recreation room for more than a year. She said that she was going to college and needed to save money.

Well, she has been living with us for more than a year and she hasn’t started college yet. What makes me angry is that she leaves her “stuff” strewn all over the house. To make matters worse, she hardly speaks to anyone in our family – not even a “hi” or “goodbye.”

Many nights she doesn’t even sleep here.

She is either sleeping over at her best friend’s house or with her boyfriend. I’ve talked with my mom, but she is “too nice” to say anything to my cousin about moving out, and since she is on my dad’s side of the family, he won’t say anything either. Do you have any ideas? Explain exactly why you don’t enjoy having your cousin staying at your house. Have a written list so that you won’t forget anything. Listen to your parents’ views.

There may be certain reasons that make it best for her to be with your family. If your parents decide to allow her to stay, at least have one or both of your parents insist that she keep her “stuff” in her room.

It might help if you would say “hi” or “goodbye” to her first, and try to be her friend.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 16 and have a pen pal from England. We’ve never met, but we write to each other often. My big problem is that my mother opens his letters before I get a chance to

Nameless: Trust between parent and teen is extremely important.

Unless you have violated that trust, your mother should respect your privacy and not open your mail. Mom is making a serious mistake by doing so. You may, however, want to share an interesting letter from time to time, just to reassure your mother.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 13 and a girl, and I’m 5 feet 2 inches tall. My 17-year-old sister is 5 feet 9 inches. My dad is 6 feet 3 inches, and my mom is 5 feet 10 inches. I realize that I will not be a giant, but I would like to grow at least another 6 inches.

Nameless: People can continue growing into their early 20s, but girls normally reach their maximum height sometime in their 17th year, and boys in their 19th year. Since heredity is a major factor in height, let’s hope Mother Nature hurries up a little bit.

In today’s deal, though, South’s problem is which suit to dig at first. He is in three notrump, and West leads the spade queen.

After West opens three spades, North has a textbook takeout double, and South plunges into the logical game contract.

South starts with five top tricks: two spades, one heart and two diamonds. He can gain three more winners from clubs and at least two from hearts. And there is a natural instinct immediately to play a club, but that is fatal. East wins with his ace and returns his remaining spade, which establishes West’s suit while West still has the heart king as an entry.

Declarer needs to realize two things. First, that if West has the heart king and club ace, the contract is unmakable. Second, that it cannot cost to take the heart finesse before touching clubs.

So South plays a diamond to dummy’s king, then runs the heart queen. If the finesse wins, declarer can switch to clubs to establish nine winners. Here, though, the finesse loses and West probably perseveres in spades. South wins and knocks out the club ace, knowing that East is now out of spades.

If instead West returns his second diamond at trick four, declarer takes the trick and plays a club, aware that he cannot lose more than one heart, one club and two diamonds.
