Summer fun and butterflies

Water Street Studios sets summer show BATAVIA – On Friday, Water Street Studios will showcase its 2013 Summer Show at 160 S. Water St., Batavia.

The exhibit will open at 6 p.m., with Best of Show being announced at 7 p.m. in the Main Gallery by guest juror, Staci Boris, chief curator at the Elmhurst Art Museum.

Along with the show in the Main Gallery, this event will feature two additional shows. The Kane County Chronicle Gallery will host Art Town, featuring work from students in the Water Street Studios Art Flow program. A solo show by Jennifer Cronin titled, “The Powder Room,” will be in the Loading Dock Gallery.

The opening also will be the first chance for the public to purchase tickets for Water Street Studios’ spectacle fundraiser, n-s m’ b l – “The Chair and What You Wear,” on Sept. 7.

Amateurs grill for barbecue honors

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Barbecuing is almost second nature to North Aurora resident Nate Kuhn.

“I grew up not eating vegetables,” Kuhn said. “I’m sort of a natural carnivore.”

Kuhn was competing Sunday in an amateur barbecue contest, part of this weekend’s Firin’ Up the Fox event at the Charlestowne Mall. Kuhn and his wife, Sarah, were part of the CatDaddy’s BBQ team.

“We have three cats,” he said. “And it’s kind of a cool name.”

Kuhn was confident his barbecued spare ribs and chicken would stand up well to the competition.

“Everyone who does barbecue thinks their’s is the best,” he said. “We are here to see who is the best.”

Gavin Stoub of Batavia and his brother-in-law, Brent Bedell of Orland Park, weren’t about to reveal any cooking secrets.

“If I told you, I would have to kill you,” Stoub said with a laugh.

He has been barbecuing since 2008.

“It’s a good way to throw a party and have fun doing it,” Stoub said.

Barbecuing is all in the family for brothers Randy Mulvey of Wheaton and Bob Mulvey of Lockport.

Their team was appropriately named The Brothers Q. “He got me into it,” Randy Mulvey said. “He’s been doing it for a year or two. Barbecuing is a great family activity.”

“It’s my first time out of the box,” he said. “I’m hoping it will turn out all right.”

Along with being able to spend time with his brother, he also enjoyed the camaraderie between the other barbecue cooks.

“It’s almost like a community,” he said. “You share secrets, although you don’t give them all away.”

Pride of the Fox Inc. put on the event for the second consecutive year. Firin’ Up the Fox started last year during the RiverFest event in St. Charles. LivingWell Cancer Resource Center in Geneva will receive a portion of the proceeds from the event.

GENEVA – The wing of a great horned owl lay on a table, all that was left after some coyotes – amazingly – got ahold of it.

The wing, owl pellets, a demonstration of how birds’ beaks work and an oversized nest big enough to hold human beings were all the attractions Saturday at Peck Farm Park’s new “Get Wild!” program.

Nature educator Rana Mills said the two-hour program will be offered every Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. Stations will be set up for families to experience some hands-on nature activities together.

“The coyotes caught him somehow and chewed him up,” Mills said. “I can’t imagine how they would get an owl that size … somehow they managed to surprise him.

I guess the wing’s not very meaty, so they left that for us.”

Bryan Schertzer said his taxes were well-spent to preserve and maintain parks like Peck Farm Park.

“The burden of property tax here in the Fox Valley is relatively high,” Schertzer said. “But you can visibly see it’s being put to good use. We see that in our library system and in our school system and ... the park system is, I think, unparalleled to any of the other areas I’ve lived. It’s something we appreciate as a family and use on a regular basis.

It sets a good example for what a park district can do when they have the tax revenue to support it.”

Almora leaves Cougars game

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Albert Almora one day hopes to be under the glare of intense scrutiny as an outfielder for the Cubs.

Saturday provided an example that the relative obscurity of life in the minor leagues has its upside.

The Kane County Cougars’ most heralded prospect left Saturday night’s 5-0 loss against Quad Cities at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark with a delicate medical situation – hemorrhoids.

Cougars manager Mark Johnson said that was the condition to blame for Almora requiring medical attention after sliding toward second base on Cougars first baseman Dan Vogelbach’s double-play ball in the fourth inning.

“I think when he slid to second, obviously, he aggravated it,” Johnson said.

Almora temporarily remained in the game, heading back to center field for the fifth inning. Naturally, Quad Cities’ leadoff batter in the inning, Dan Gulbransen, drilled a ball right at Almora that he gingerly and unsuccessfully chased. It wound up as a triple.

“Always happens,” Johnson said of the ball immediately finding an embattled player.

Almora finished the half inning but was replaced by Oliver Zapata to start the sixth. He was in the trainer’s room receiving attention after the game.

“Obviously, it was killing him after the ball was hit over his head and he couldn’t get to the ball,” Johnson said. “You can’t go out there like that.”

Almora, the Cubs’ top draft pick in 2012, continues to swing a hot bat, having homered and tripled in Friday’s win. He legged out an infield single in the fourth inning Saturday leading up to Vogelbach’s double-play ground ball.

McDonald, who excelled in the Midwest League with Peoria in 2012, has yet to allow an earned run in 10 innings

of work since being demoted from High-A Daytona last month.

Johnson called the 24-yearold Canadian a “pro’s pro.”

How about South Elgin football coach Dale Schabert stepping away from the Storm mid-summer?

Sly’s sure the guy has his reasons but the timing is definitely odd, and can’t be real easy for this year’s team.

Signs point toward the Storm keeping the job in-house, but St. Charles East’s game-planning for the season opener just got a little trickier. St. Charles North also has South Elgin on the 2013 schedule at the other end of the slate, Week 9.

Speaking of the Storm, Sly’d like to see a way that South Elgin could align with the Tri-Cities schools if the UEC ends up retooling the divisions at some point in the nottoo-distant future, what with West Chicago, West Aurora and Glenbard East hopping aboard the next couple years.

Not only is South Elgin a natural geographic fit, but it seems the Storm line up competitively really well with Tri-Cities teams in most sports. Finding a divisional setup that works for all parties ain’t easy, no doubt, but adding South Elgin to the River Division (or whatever division you want to call it) would make a great conference situation all the better for the Tri-Cities schools.

For this coming year, West Chicago is the only new face in the conference, replacing Lake Park in the UEC Valley.

The Wildcats football team hasn’t tasted much success in the DVC over the years, and it’s hard to see matters getting a whole lot better for them in the UEC. East Aurora is just one game on the schedule, people.

The UEC isn’t the DVC, but it’s still a strong conference, so the Wildcats are going to have to raise their game, a lot, to make their new home any happier than the old one.

ANALYSIS Meghan Montemurro season on the North Side, providing consistency the Cubs have desperately needed. Although he sports a 5-6 record, Wood leads baseball with 16 quality starts in 17 outings and a 2.69 ERA, which ranks ninth in the majors. In 12 of his starts, Wood has allowed two earned runs or fewer, and opponents are hitting only .192 against the left-hander.

“It’s a great story,” Bosio said. “He’s busted his tail.

He’s really evolved into a top-notch major league pitcher, one of the best lefties that other teams have to look at. He’s not just another left-handed starter.

It’s attributed to a lot of hard work.”

What makes Wood’s assent so impressive is how far he’s come in a year. A disappointed Wood was sent down to Triple-A to start last season – Bosio said they even considered sending him to Double-A – to tinker with his pitches and try to become a reliable pitcher.

He eventually made his season debut in May but never put together a good run of starts. At one point in July, Wood surrendered eight, seven and eight runs, respectively, in three con-

secutive starts.

It was a tough learning curve for Wood, who was part of an offseason trade in 2011 that sent lefty reliever Sean Marshall, a fan favorite and one of the best relievers in baseball, to the Reds. At the time it appeared Cincinnati was on the winning end of the deal, but Wood’s development this season into one of the best pitchers in either league has given the Cubs another core player to build around. With starting pitching at a premium, Wood and Jeff Samardzija provide a potentially great 1-2 combination in the rotation.

“It definitely feels good when you think about it like that because they did give up a lot,” Wood said of the trade. “… For it to pay off like it has, hopefully it continues over the years to come.”

Wood’s evolution from Triple-A pitcher to All-Star required the 26-year-old to build a repertoire that consisted of more than throwing fastball and cutters to his glove side, as he did during his two mediocre seasons with the Reds.

Adding a breaking ball and two-seam fastball combined with learning to pitch to his arm side has helped Wood become an All-Star. If the Cubs’ offense showed up in more of his starts, currently averaging 3.18 runs when

“This guy pitches like he’s 6-foot-6, 230 pounds out there; he’s got a presence out there,” Bosio said of Wood. “He pitches a lot bigger than he is because he’s got confidence in the stuff that he has, confidence in the scouting report. ...

There’s more room for success and to get even better than he is now.”

White Sox reliever Jesse Crain and starting pitcher Chris Sale will be joining Wood at the All-Star Game, both having been named to the American League team.

Crain was voted onto the team by the AL players, finishing second for relievers behind Yankees closer Mariano Rivera, while Sale was a manager’s selection.

Sale, 24, earned his second consecutive All-Star selection in spite of a sub-.500 record, largely because of a Sox offense that averages 2.56 runs during his starts, second-fewest in baseball.

However, Sale owns a 2.78 ERA and has struck out 123 hitters in 113⅓ innings.

When Sox director of travel Ed Cassin called Crain and gave him the good news that he made his first All-Star team, the right hander said he was close to tears.

“To be playing, this is my 10th season, and get recognized is pretty amazing,” Crain told the pool reporter.

“Being a setup guy and not being a closer, that means a lot. It means a lot to be voted in by the players. I was little upset and nervous going on the DL, bad timing and all that. But it’s an honor.”

It’s the first All-Star selection for Crain, although he will not be able to pitch in the game because he is on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder strain. Crain’s dominant season includes a 0.74 ERA, leading AL relievers, with 46 strikeouts in 36⅔ innings.

Crain, 32, set the Sox’s franchise record with 29 consecutive scoreless appearances from April 17 to June 22.

“It’s good for all the guys who pitch the innings I do, in the seventh and eighth, it gives everyone a chance to make it.,” Crain said. “You could probably count on one hand the times in the last 10 years a noncloser made [the All-Star team].”

CHICAGO – Four weeks ago, Cubs pitching coach Chris Bosio and staff assistant Mike Borzello met with pitcher Travis Wood and issued him a challenge.

It was the same message they had delivered to Wood during spring training: Take your game to the next level.

“Woody, you have to take that next step and be that guy,” Bosio recalled. “We need this out of you.”

Wood has put in the work – video sessions on his off days, pouring over scouting reports and improving his secondary pitches – to leave behind an inconsistent 2012 season that often left him disappointed after starts, and his remarkable turnaround was validated Saturday. Before the Cubs’ 4-1 win against the Pirates, manager Dale Sveum addressed the team in the clubhouse and handed Wood the news he had made the National League All-Star team. The All-Star honor is the first for Wood, who will be the Cubs’ lone representative at the AllStar Game on July 16 at Citi Field in New York.

“It’s a goal you set as a player to play like an AllStar, be an All-Star and to be selected, it’s outstanding,” Wood said with a smile.

Dear Abby: At what point is a relationship with a member of the opposite sex considered “cheating”? I have recently discovered that my husband was having a more-than-friendly relationship with a co-worker. He set up a post office box for her so she could write to him while she was away for an extended period.

I found her letters and read them. They described how she missed my husband and “couldn’t wait to feel” his arms around her and his lips on hers again. She said he had shown her what real true love can be. She is 12 years younger than he is.

My husband says they never had sex, but did kiss on several occasions, and he enjoyed their deep, open conversations. Because my husband is not a big conversationalist, that has been very hard for me. The idea that he had meaningful conversations with this woman hurts me more than the physical things they admit to.

He says it’s not actually cheating if they never slept together. I say, with everything he has admitted to and the fact he has opened up to her in ways I have begged him to with me, he has DEFINITELY cheated!

This is the second time in our 16-year marriage this kind of thing has happened.

Why give bad bidding advice?

All bridge writers make mistakes. But they should work hard to give sound advice to their readers, especially in the bidding.

Look at the North hand in today’s diagram. You open one spade, and your partner responds two diamonds. What would you rebid?

There is an excellent general rule in bidding: Never immediately rebid in a suit, whether a major or a minor, unless you have at least six cards in that suit.

Here, North has an easy twono-trump rebid. But the columnist who gave this hand had North rebid two spades without one word of comment. In my opinion, even three diamonds is a better rebid than two spades.

If you put the North hand opposite my hypothesized South hand, you will see that six diamonds is the best spot. It requires little more than one of two finesses, and makes here.

After North rebids two no-trump, a possible sequence is three clubs - three diamonds - three spades four hearts (a control-bid; North’s hand could hardly be better) - six diamonds - pass.

If North rebids two spades, South might well jump straight to four spades. But what happens to six spades?

East leads the heart king, which kills the contract. Probably North would win with his ace, play a club to the ace, and run the spade jack. East calmly ducks. And now, when declarer repeats the spade finesse, he goes down two, losing one spade and two hearts.

Occasionally, you will have to rebid immediately in a five-card suit, but then every other alternative must be worse.
