By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles resident Clifford McIlvaine, whose long-term improvement project has been taken over by the city, blamed St. Charles officials after water leaked into his house Monday after a heavy downpour.

“It was like a shower coming down,” McIlvaine said. “The water came through both the attic of the garage and the solarium. It was coming in here bad. It was gross negligence on the part of the city of St. Charles.”

Kane County Judge David Akemann recently allowed the city of St. Charles to proceed with repairing McIlvaine’s property at 605 Prairie St., including correcting an unfinished roof.

The city had sued McIlvaine in 2010, pushing him to finish the project which was started more than 30 years ago.

St. Charles aldermen recently approved hiring Absolute Construction and Roofing to install an asphalt roof on his house.

McIlvaine said the water damaged a lot of electrical supplies and building materials that were being stored in his house.

“Who’s going to pay for all this stuff?” McIlvaine asked. “It’s the city’s responsibility to make sure nothing like this happens.”

McIlvaine said the temporary tarps that were on his roof should have been replaced by a rubber membrane in order to prevent what happened.

“I wanted the temporary tarps to get a permanent rubber membrane right away,” he said.

“It’s a matter still under investigation,” Vann said.

“Either the tarp got blown off, or it wasn’t laid right.”

He said the contractor has “adjusted everything to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

A status hearing on the case is set for Friday. McIlvaine said he plans to discuss the matter with Akemann.

In 1975 and 1976, the city issued McIlvaine building permits for the construction of a detached garage

and addition to the home.

The house, which dates to the early 1920s, is his boyhood home.

Akemann in May allowed the city of St. Charles to proceed with repairing McIlvaine ’s property, including correcting an unfinished roof and removing outside debris and construction materials deemed hazardous.

A work schedule was agreed upon in court.

The project was supposed to be completed by the end of September 2012, according to the order.

Kane board poised to approve road project

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County officials appear poised to approve the next phases in a large road project intended to alleviate congestion on bridges over the Fox River on the county’s north end.

The Kane County Board was expected to vote today on $8.66 million in engineering contracts for the Longmeadow Parkway.

Officially called Phase 2 engineering, the contracts would extend over several years and would result in final road design plans and a set of “bid documents” needed to hire contractors to build the road, said Carl Schoedel, Kane County’s director of transportation.

The proposed Longmeadow Parkway project has been long sought by Kane County and village officials on the

county’s north end. The project would add about 5.5 miles of roadway from Route 62 across the Fox River to Huntley Road in the Algonquin, Carpentersville and Lake in the Hills area.

The project has received some federal support. However, the project still faces significant hurdles, including the question of how to pay for it.

County officials have indicated the project could be funded through $1 to $1.50 tolls collected from those crossing the new Fox River bridge, in addition to state and federal transportation dollars.

County officials also have discussed issuing bonds or engaging in public-private partnerships to construct and maintain the bridge.

County Board members representing communities at Kane’s south end also have expressed a desire to redirect

some road fees that could otherwise be spent on other road projects in northern Kane County to the Longmeadow project to relieve southern Kane County residents of the burden for the project.

Southern Kane County representatives worry the project would unduly burden their residents, while benefiting McHenry County residents, who are expected to use the bridge once it opens to avoid congestion on the Route 62 bridge in downtown Algonquin.

Schoedel said completing the Phase 2 engineering work will give the county a much better idea of the Longmeadow Parkway’s estimated cost, giving the County Board better information with which to formulate a financing plan.

“This is a significant step forward in making this a ‘shovel-ready’ project,” Schoedel said.

BATAVIA TOWNSHIP – A 52-year-old man was in critical condition after being shot Monday morning by a sergeant in the Kane County Sheriff’s Department in an incident in which police said they encountered the man outside his residence, with a rifle.

Police said they were dispatched to the 3S300 block of Elfstrom Trail in Batavia Township for a report of a man making suicidal threats.

Police said they were informed the man might have fired a gun. When police arrived, they said they encountered the man, who lived at the residence, outside with a rifle.

Police said they tried to get the man to drop the rifle. Police said the man refused to drop the rifle and pointed it at the deputies. A sergeant who was at the scene shot the man, police said.

The man was taken to Mercy Center Hospital in Aurora and was in critical condition, police said. No one else was injured in the incident.

The sergeant who fired the shot is a 20-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, police said. The sergeant was placed on paid administrative leave, pending a review of the incident. The Kane County Sheriff’s Office and the Illinois State Police were conducting a review of the incident.

No charges have been filed at this time, the release stated.

Neighbor describes crash into porch

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com BLACKBERRY TOWN SHIP – A car and a pickup truck that smashed into a porch on the 0N500 block of Armstrong Lane demolished a stone pillar next to cement front steps and knocked over a tree and some shrubs as they careened from Brundige Road at the intersection of Armstrong Lane, neighbors said.

Gary Johnson, who lives across the street, said he heard the crash about 10:45 p.m. Friday. He said he went outside to see what happened.

“I heard two cars colliding, and a few seconds later, a ‘Boom!’ ” Johnson said. “One was a pickup truck, and one was an older, smaller Lincoln.”

Johnson said he called 911, and as he was talking to emergency dispatchers, the drivers, two teenage boys, came out.

“Both were on their cellphones trying to call their parents or whoever,” he said.

“I got off my phone and I asked, ‘What happened guys?

Are you all right?’ I asked how old they were and they both said they were 17.”

Johnson said the boys told him they were friends and both were driving in the same direction, south on Brundige.

“The one driving the truck said he was coming up to the corner here and was going to turn left, and the other kid came up and hit him and they both went into the house,” Johnson said. “I talked to them. They were very, very nice young guys. They were sober – to my knowledge – and right then the firemen got there and took them right into the ambulance. And then their parents got here.”

Kane County Sheriff’s Lt. Pat Gengler said the two drivers were ticketed and taken to a hospital with injuries that weren’t life threatening, but further details were unavailable Monday.

Officials of the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District were unavailable Monday to provide details.

Van Gyseghem said a couple of years ago the city had flooding problems in the Geneva East area during a sixinch rainfall, particularly along Manchester Course.

“There’s not much we can do with a six-inch rainfall, it still happens that we will get flooding,” Van Gyseghem.

“Today’s storm, because of improvements we made there a couple years ago, there were absolutely no concerns.”

Aldermen reconsider uses for land near STC mall site

CHARLES – Before recommending approval of the city’s proposed comprehensive plan Monday, the Planning and Development Committee revisited part of the plan that addresses whether residential units should be located near the former St. Charles Mall site.

Aldermen heard arguments for and against allowing residential units in that area, which is a 30-acre site at Randall Road and Route 38.

Some said that area should be limited to commercial zoning because it’s an “extremely viable” front for commercial development, while others said eliminating housing altogether could stop certain developments – such as a residential

rehabilitation center – from locating there.

After discussion about the matter in June, the proposed comprehensive plan came back to the Planning and Development Committee on Monday with suggestions to eliminate all residential zoning in the former St. Charles Mall site.

By the end of Monday’s discussion, aldermen voted, 5-3, to keep the comprehensive plan as-is, meaning the proposed plan will include residential zoning in that area.

Fourth Ward Alderman Jim Martin was one of the aldermen who voted against allowing residential zoning in that area.

He argued the area is a place where commercial retail could thrive.

“This site, you might say,

is one of the remaining sites on the west side available for retail,” he said. “Once a comprehensive plan goes into effect, everyone uses it as a guide … To get a change in the comprehensive plan is very difficult.”

John Rabchuk, member of the Comprehensive Plan Task Force, said the purpose of the comprehensive plan is to allow flexibility for how developers use the land.

He said eliminating residential uses could keep the site from being developed at all. Martin said he didn’t want the area to be used as “a piein-the-sky thing that somebody dreamed up.”

“Keep in mind that this council has final say in whatever goes on,” Rabchuk said.

“All of that can be approved or denied.”

BATAVIA – Aldermen today will review plans for an industrial development on land along Kirk Road originally proposed for town houses.

They will review the plans at a Joint Committee of the Whole meeting at 7:30 p.m. at the Batavia Government Center, 100 N. Island Ave., Batavia.

The 56-acre property, known as Prairie Commons, is on the east side of Kirk Road at Wind Energy Pass.

City officials in 2005 annexed the property.

The original development included residential zoning on the eastern 36 acres, with 242 town homes proposed.

The western 20 acres was to be zoned general commercial.

GENEVA – Aldermen approved additional work by a company currently lining some of the city’s sanitary sewers because of heavy storm infiltration, officials said.

Geneva awarded a contract in May to Insituform Technologies of Oak Park for $113,785 to place cured-in-place-pipe to repair sanitary sewers without digging.

But televising the inside of the sanitary sewers showed 2,436 feet of eight-inch sanitary sewer with heavy infiltration, officials said.

Aldermen acting as the Committee of the Whole on Monday unanimously approved extending the company’s work at an additional cost of $76,622.20, for a total contract of $190,407.20.

The City Council will take

Officials said the amount still is within the city’s budgeted amount.

Superintendent of Water and Wastewater Bob Van Gyseghem said the technology relines the sanitary sewers with an epoxy that forms against the pipe walls and stops stormwater infiltration.

He estimated the epoxy would last about 50 years.

Van Gyseghem said the other lines the company were relining were along Anderson Boulevard and in the Glengarry subdivision. The additional sewer line work is in the Fargo Boulevard and Dunstan Road areas.

“Those lines are in urgent need of lining,” Van Gyseghem said. “A lot of the older areas – the north section of town from probably Anderson to State Street was a concern for me – a lot of excess flow comes into those areas. That’s

Liquor commission nominees announced KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Mayor Ray Rogina has announced the two aldermen and the two St. Charles residents nominated to serve on the city’s newly formed liquor commission.

Council members include 2nd Ward Alderman Rita Anne Payleitner and 5th Ward

Alderman Maureen Lewis.

The two city residents include Charles A. Amenta II, who has lived in St. Charles for six years, and Robert Gehm, who has lived in St. Charles for 23 years, according to a news release from the city of St. Charles.

Rogina will continue to serve as liquor commissioner, and the other members of

the commission will serve as advisory members. The City Council approved the new liquor commission, and members will review applications for liquor licenses and conduct disciplinary hearings.

Amenta is a financial representative at Northwestern Mutual and serves on the Reneaux Manor Homeowners Association Board, the release

stated. Gehm has more than 30 years of business experience in accounting, finance and project management, and also has volunteered with several local organizations, according to the release.

Amateur barbecue cooks compete in STC contest

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Barbecuing is almost second nature to North Aurora resident Nate Kuhn.

“I grew up not eating vegetables,” Kuhn said.

“I’m sort of a natural carnivore.”

Kuhn was competing Sunday in an amateur barbecue contest, part of this weekend’s Firin’ Up the Fox event at the Charlestowne Mall.

Kuhn and his wife, Sarah, were part of the CatDaddy’s BBQ team.

“We have three cats,” he said. “And it’s kind of a cool name.”

Kuhn was confident that his barbecued spare ribs and chicken would stand up well to the competition.

Thirty-one amateur teams participated in the contest, and 19 kids participated in the Kids’ Q. “Everyone who does barbecue thinks there’s is the best,” he said. “We are here to see who is the best.”

His pork ribs received fifth place in the amateur competition.

First place went to St. Charles team Hard Hawg Hawgkey, which also received a second place award for its barbecue chicken.

Gavin Stoub of Batavia, and his brother-in-law, Brent Bedell of Orland Park, weren’t about to reveal any cooking secrets.

“If I told you, I would have to kill you,” Stoub said with a laugh.

He has been barbecuing since 2008.

“It’s a good way to throw a party and have fun doing it,” Stoub said.

Barbecuing is also all in the family for brothers Randy Mulvey of Wheaton and Bob Mulvey of Lockport.

Their team appropriately was named The Brothers Q. “He got me into it,” Randy Mulvey said. “He’s been doing it for a year or two.

Barbecuing is a great family activity.”

This was his first barbecue competition. He cooked up chicken thighs slathered with blackberry barbecue sauce.

“It’s my first time out of the box,” he said. “I’m hoping it will turn out all right.”

Along with being able to spend time with his brother, he also enjoyed the camaraderie between the other barbecue cooks.

“It’s almost like a community,” he said. “You share secrets, although you don’t give them all away.”

Pride of the Fox Inc. put on the event for the second consecutive year. Firin’ Up the Fox started last year during the RiverFest event in St. Charles.

LivingWell Cancer Resource Center in Geneva will receive a portion of the proceeds from the event.

The wing, owl pellets, a demonstration of how birds’ beaks work and an oversized nest big enough to hold human beings were all the attractions Saturday at Peck Farm Park’s new “Get Wild!” program.

Nature educator Rana Mills said the two-hour program will be offered every Saturday from noon to 2 p.m.

Families can come and experience some hands-on nature activities to do together.

“The coyotes caught him somehow and chewed him up,” Mills said. “I can’t imagine how they would get an owl that size … somehow

they managed to surprise him. I guess the wing’s not very meaty, so they left that for us.”

Tina and Bryan Schertzer of Geneva brought their daughters, Sydney, 10 and Olivia, 7, and a friend, Caitlin Cassidy, 6, along with family visiting from Pennsylvania, Cathy and Steve McConnell, to the program Sydney, who came prepared with binoculars, said she likes watching redwinged blackbirds.

Steve McConnell said he liked all the open space and nature activities he was seeing while visiting his inlaws.

“It’s just a lot of planning and having enough funding from the community to keep things like this going,” McConnell said.

“It wasn’t just this park.

I was pretty amazed at how

many parks there are in this vicinity.

“Developments are notorious for leveling the trees and not having anything around. This is unusual for the amount of foresight to have. I appreciate that.”

Bryan Schertzer said his taxes were well-spent to preserve and maintain parks like Peck Farm Park.

“The burden of property tax here in the Fox Valley is relatively high,” Schertzer said. “But you can visibly see it’s being put to good use. We see that in our library system and in our school system and ... the park system is, I think, unparalleled to any of the other areas I’ve lived. It’s something we appreciate as a family and use on a regular basis. It sets a good example for what a park district can do when they have the tax revenue to support it.”

Gas leak prompts evacuation of strip mall

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A natural gas leak prompted the evacuation of a strip mall on Randall Road near Fabyan Parkway for a few hours Monday.

About 2:30 p.m. Monday, Batavia firefighters responded to a report of a natural gas leak on a construction site in the 800 block of North Ran-

dall Road, just south of Fabyan Parkway, Batavia Fire Chief Randy Deicke said.

He said construction workers were digging on the site, located behind two existing strip retail centers on the west side of Randall Road, when they struck a 2-inch gas line.

Firefighters called representatives of Nicor to the scene, and evacuated some of

the nearby businesses, which included a Delnor Express Care medical clinic and Cartridge World.

Employees of at least one of the businesses still were waiting in the parking lot outside the strip mall about 45 minutes after firefighters first arrived on the scene.

Deike said the construction workers were preparing the ground for the eventual

construction of an auto repair business at that location, just east of the Batavia Walmart.

He said firefighters and repair crews remained on the scene into the late afternoon.

Because of the location of the gas leak, traffic on Randall Road and Fabyan Parkway, as well as at most nearby businesses, were not affected by the situation.

She married her high school sweetheart, James Loren Thompson Jr., on Jan. 17, 1952, and they enjoyed 60 years of marriage until his death in 2012. She stayed at home with their four children and taught piano and cello lessons until starting her teaching career in 1963. She taught kindergarten, developmental first grade and first grade at Little Woods, Munhall and Davis schools in St. Charles. She retired in 1990. Before teaching, Frances played in symphony orchestras in Evansville, Pensacola, Fla., and DuPage County, Ill. Frances and Jim enjoyed many years of retirement, traveling and spending time in St. Charles with their grandchildren. They spent summers at their cottage on Kentucky Lake boating, fishing and preparing fish and cornbread dinners for their son, Daniel, and his children when they visited. They spent winters at their Texas home round dancing. They attended round dance festivals around the

Dorothy enjoyed bingo, crossword puzzles and scratch-off lottery tickets. Baking and making candy and cookies were her true passion.

She was born May 7, 1930, in Evansville, Ind., the daughter of Mabel and Marvin Huff. Frances graduated as valedictorian from Central High School in Evansville in 1948 and received her bachelors

Zoning, prescribing issues among the details to be addressed

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com Now that lawmakers have made Illinois the 20th state to legalize medical marijuana, there are details that will need to be addressed, assuming Gov. Pat Quinn signs the bill.

The bill covers growing centers and dispensaries, among other requirements.

The Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Pilot Program Act covers a list of medical conditions and diseases – such as cancer, multiple sclerosis and glaucoma – in which a doctor can legally prescribe marijuana. It also allows for the Illinois Department of Agriculture to issue

a permit for up to 22 growing centers, no more than one for each state police district, and 60 dispensaries.

The area served by Illinois State Police District 2 in Elgin includes Kane, McHenry, Lake, Kendall, DuPage and Will counties, officials said.

The bill also would allow grow centers and dispensaries – an inclusion in zoning laws local governments might not have anticipated.

In Geneva, Community Development Director Dick Untch said if someone approached the city wanting to set up either a grow center or dispensary, that person would have to seek a zoning text amendment.

“We haven’t gotten into that topic,” Untch said. “If a use is not specifically stated, it’s not allowed. That is how our zoning ordinance is set up. Only the uses specifically listed are allowed.”

Some jurisdictions have what Untch called “catch-all language,” which include other uses similar to those listed. To know that, anyone looking to set up either a grow center or dispensary would have to look at each municipality’s or county’s individual zoning language.

“Beyond that, we’ve never dug into this law and the whole topic of dispensaries for medical

“There’s something in the [state] law that pre-empts local zoning.”

Any municipality that requires a zoning change or text amendment would put the whole issue in public for hearings, review, debate and voting, he said.

“It would have to be done in the clear light of day ... exactly what we did for Penrose Brewing,” Untch said, referring to the zoning text amendment process, including public hearings, to allow a microbrewery with a tasting room in Geneva.

“And to have that use, it would have to be compatible.

It would have to fit in with other uses in that [zoning] district,” Untch said. “Where would it fit? I’m not sure. I’d have to do some research.”

Kane County Development Director Mark VanKerkhoff said the county’s zoning ordinance include provisions for agriculture, and a marijuana growing center could fit in to the county’s agricultural uses.

“Not having looked into it, if someone applied for such a license, we would look at it with the State’s Attorney’s Office under the authorization of the state,” VanKerkhoff said. “We have to look at whatever passed in the bill and review it.”

••• Dr. Rodney Nelson, an oncologist in Geneva, said terpenophenolic compounds – THC – found in marijuana have been legally prescribed by doctors for years to help cancer patients with nausea and appetite stimulation.

“It’s pretty well-tolerated by people who used it recreationally,” Nelson said. “We [prescribe] it some. We use it for wasting syndrome of HIV and also cancer ... with modest results. It has not worked

Nelson said for him, the problem with prescribing it would be regulating the dose accurately, because the marijuana would vary from batch to batch.

••• The bill would go into effect Jan. 1 if the governor signs it, but some already are looking into setting up growing centers and dispensaries.

One of them is Batavia resident Samuel Franzmann, who approached the Huntley Village Board during a committee meeting recently to propose a cultivation center.

“I want to make sure that I get my foot in the door and start talking to people to make them realize that I’m not some crook or drug lord trying to encroach on small town Huntley,” Franzmann said.

Franzmann told the board he was a business owner with small business experience, but later said he works for Hinsdale Orthopedic doing information technology work.

Huntley Village Manager Dave Johnson said staff are reviewing the legislation for zoning regulations for medical marijuana growers.

David Blanchette, a spokesman for Quinn, said medical marijuana is one of the top three bills the governor is studying, the other two being concealed carry and the pension issue.

“He is very moved by all the input he’s gotten, especially from veterans,” Blanchette said. “He is also very cognizant of the concerns of law enforcement and weighing both sides before he makes his decision.”

Otroligt! Whether you say it in Swedish or English, the word “incredible” encompasses everything that was last month’s huge Swedish Days festival. We hope everyone had as much fun attending as we did at the Geneva Chamber of Commerce planning this community festival.

A huge thank you to the city of Geneva departments for making sure the downtown always looked its best, for all the pre-work of setting up and cleaning up whatever was necessary to run the six-day event. OPINIONS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Full-day kindergarten?

To the Editor: You only get one chance to make a first impression, and kindergarten is just that for young children. These students are 5 and 6 years old and can get tired at mid-day, hungry or just excited to share their school day with a parent.

Please, please before Geneva School District 304 thinks of going to full-day kindergarten (just like “everybody else,” which is no reason to do so) please talk to your teachers in the special education department.

The foundation and booster programs have been the best idea to date. And it allows teachers to focus on the smaller group in need of extra help.

As a parent of a graduate of Geneva High School, my child’s learning issues were not addressed until third grade, and it became a struggle of catch up until graduation. In a final IEP meeting, your teachers made comment about how time and money were being saved because of the foundation and booster programs.

If the district does allow full-day kindergarten, I hope it gives parents the option to choose.

Anti-cancer vaccine gets too few takers THE WASHINGTON POST The safety and effectiveness of a vaccine to protect teen girls against dangerous strains of the virus that is a leading cause of cervical cancer have been unquestionably proved.

So it is both discouraging and heartbreaking that, because of ignorance and ill-founded fears, relatively few young people get this lifesaving vaccine.

A study released in June by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention catalogued the remarkable decrease in the rate of infection

from the human papillomavirus, or HPV, among girls 14 to 19. The study, comparing infection rates in girls before and after the vaccine was introduced in 2006, showed a drop of more than 56 percent.

“These are striking results,” said CDC director Thomas R. Frieden.

HPV, the most common sexually transmitted infection, causes serious health problems (including cancer) for both men and women.

But only one-third of 13to 17-year-old girls in the United States have received the recommended three-dose series of HPV vaccine.

“Preventable tragedies” is how Frieden referred to the cases of cervical cancer that will affect 50,000 girls alive today who would have been spared were the vaccination rate boosted to the targeted 87 percent.

That’s in addition to increasing evidence that the HPV vaccine may protect against head and neck cancers associated with HPV, an issue that recently received attention with the revelation by actor Michael Douglas that his throat cancer may have been caused by having oral sex with an HPV-infected woman.

Routine vaccination is recommended for both girls and boys starting at age 11 or 12. Parents have proved to be reluctant; some worry about harmful, long-term side effects (there are none), while others fear the vaccination will promote adolescent promiscuity (also disproved by the recent CDC study).

Doctors and other healthcare providers have been lackadaisical in recommending the shots. States, which long ago recognized the public-policy importance of tying immunizations for communicable diseases to school enrollment, unfortu-

nately have shied away from the HPV vaccine.

The District of Columbia and Virginia are the only jurisdictions in the country that include HPV in the portfolio of shots required for school, though even they (rightly) allow parents to opt out.

It’s time America gets over its squeamishness and takes advantage of this medical advance. Said Frieden: “The time has come to ramp up our efforts to protect the next generation against cancer with the HPV vaccine. This is an anti-cancer vaccine.”

WHOA, CAPTAIN North’s MacKenzie wins lacrosse fan contest

L

acrosse figures to shed its niche sport status in much of the midwest when teenagers choose sides for regular pickup games.

Until then, St. Charles North senior midfielder Cameron MacKenzie holds several picks of destiny. He’ll travel to Charlotte, N.C., this weekend to make them.

Last month, Major League Lacrosse selected MacKenzie as one of two honorary team captains for Saturday’s all-star game after player and executive voting in the league’s Ultimate Fan Fantasy Contest. MacKenzie’s three-minute, five-second video served as the backbone of his candidacy, and ultimately landed him a unique opportunity.

“It makes me feel accomplished to be able to set a goal and reach it,” MacKenzie said, “then see that dream come true to be able to see and meet these MLL all-stars and learn from them.”

MacKenzie requested No. 21, which he wears for Naperville-based New Wave Lacrosse during club season. He thinks that’s a “cooler number” than the 60 he was issued upon entering what was then the St. Charles co-op program as a freshman.

MacKenzie credits a handful of friends for helping him with video production, namely East lacrosse player Eric Merrill, who edited footage in just

a few hours. North football teammate Matt Prestemon had extremely limited experience handling a camera, yet gladly filmed footage of MacKenzie either playing or walking on North’s campus.

Other shots included MacKenzie playing in his basement and coaching fourth- and fifth-graders for Tri-Cities -based River City Lacrosse.

“We kind of just wanted to be in it just to help him out,” said North junior Eric Koppang. “Just being in the video was enough fun. It was just such a great time that it didn’t matter. We really don’t expect anything back.”

To hear MacKenzie’s narration near the beginning of the video, he already has benefited plenty from lacrosse, a sport he took up as a Thompson Middle School seventh-grader: “Lacrosse isn’t just a game. It’s a lifestyle. A crazy, demanding lifestyle.

GENEVA – Monday afternoon’s rainout between the Cougars and Quad Cities made for a barren Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

The home clubhouse off the concourse wasn’t exactly bustling, either, as many players dispersed once the Cougars announced the game had been postponed.

Extra idle hours and a 4-13 start to the second half of the season weren’t enough to sway manager Mark Johnson to schedule a workout in place of today’s open date. The next time the club must all be accounted for is 9 a.m. Wednesday, when the bus leaves for a six-game road trip to South Bend and West Michigan.

“Most guys stay away on off days,” Johnson said. “I mean, if they want to come in, they can come in. It’s not like they can come in here and take [batting practice] or anything, but there’s no reason. Usually, guys will just stay away.”

With the Cougars bidding to win their first series since June 5 to 7 at Burlington, the inclement weather offered a roadblock. Kane County won the first two games of the rare five-game series before losing the past two, 5-0 Saturday and 12-5 Sunday.

“We had a great couple games and then you know, that’s baseball,” center fielder Albert Almora said. “You have your good games, you have your bad games. We just have to turn the page and just play the next day like it’s a brandnew season.”

Rainouts, meanwhile, lack much novelty in 2013, one season after the Cougars went a perfect 70 for 70 in accommodating box office openings.

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM Remember the Shmoo? It started one of the biggest assortment of collectibles in the 20th century. The animal was first seen in a L’il Abner comic strip in August 1946, and it became a sensation. Al Capp, the artist, had invented an animal that laid eggs and glass bottles of milk, tasted like whatever you liked to eat and purposely died when someone seemed hungry. Its button eyes made terrific suspender buttons, and its skin could be used for leather or lumber. They gave rides, played with children and were so amusing people stopped watching television. They multiplied quickly so there was always a good supply, and they needed no food, just air. A Shmoo was shaped like a large upside-down comma with feet, but had no ears, arms or noses. The Shmoo became a collecting sensation in the 1940s and ‘50s. There were dolls, toys, planters, sheet music, wallpaper, clothing, books, jewelry, clocks, salt-and-pepper sets, banks and even air fresheners and earmuffs. All are collected today. But while they were lovable and wanted only to bring happiness, Shmoon (the plural of Shmoo) brought misery to the comic-strip people of Dogpatch. Because there was no need to work, society changed. Grocery and meat stores closed, and the owners organized squads to kill the Shmoon until they were thought to be extinct. But they managed to come back in later comic strips. And collectors search for them today.

Q: My antique flow-blue platter belonged to my great-grandmother. She brought it to America from Germany in the 1860s. The oriental pattern includes two houses and other buildings, two figures and two large birds flying above the treetops. The printed mark on the underside of the eight-sided platter is a phoenix bird above the words “Chusan” and “J. Clementson.” The word “Clementson” also is impressed. Please tell me history and value.

A: Your platter was made in England

by Joseph Clementson and possibly dates from as early as the 1840s.

Clementson operated his pottery at the Phoenix Works in Shelton, Hanley, in the famous Staffordshire District from about 1839 to 1864, but the phoenix bird mark was introduced in the 1840s. Several English manufacturers of flow-blue china (patterns with deliberately smudged blue designs) made oriental patterns named “Chusan,” but the designs are not identical. Your platter, if in excellent condition, would sell for $150 to $200.

nament fees, already had airfare – there was nothing else we could do.”

From a logical standpoint, Weber was at peace with the decision, but that didn’t make sitting out the bulk of the fall any easier of an adjustment.

“We had a pretty decent team last year Matt Weber and probably could have made it to state if I was playing,” Weber said. “But the way they handled it, there was nothing we could do.”

Weber intends to be on board for the Rockets when the upcoming high school season rolls around next month,

but first he has a couple more high-profile summer tournaments to play.

Already this summer, the Indiana recruit has had some impressive resume-builders, including a 17th place finish out of more than 150 golfers at the Western Junior Championship in Indianapolis.

He tied for second place in a qualifier for the upcoming Illinois Open Championship, shooting a 2-under-par 70 at Inverness Golf Club.

With Weber’s offseason starting earlier than he wanted last fall, he had plenty of time to work on his game with private instructors John Perna and Dan Kochevar out of Oak Brook.

“One of the big things is I picked up a lot of distance,”

Weber said. “I did a lot of training with my coaches over the winter and picked up about 25 yards, which is a big thing.”

Weber, who hones his game locally at Elgin Country Club, now drives the ball about 290 yards off the tee, he said.

His college choice came down to Indiana, Virginia, Northwestern and Illinois, with Weber choosing the Hoosiers this spring.

“At the end of the day, I really loved the campus in Bloomington and the facilities they have for the golf team,” Weber said. “The coaches were great, they’re great guys. I don’t think I could have made a better decision.”

Sox hope Phegley gives Cubs adjusting roster offense needed boost

During two weekend starts at Tampa Bay, Phegley recorded his first career hit, RBI and run scored as well as a home run that came against former Cy Young award winner David Price.

On Monday against the Sox’s crosstown rival Cubs, Phegley debuted at U.S. Cellular Field, started behind the plate, batted eighth and homered in the third inning.

Phegley, who is originally from Terre Haute, Ind., which is approximately three hours from the ballpark, expects plenty of family will come watch him play in the coming weeks.

The offensive production at Triple-A Charlotte from the 25-year-old former first-round draft pick prompted the Sox to bring Phegley to the majors hoping he can provide a boost in a struggling lineup. He hit .316 with 15 home runs and 41 RBIs in 61 games at Charlotte.

“Just starting off so well in Charlotte and having a good season to begin with kind of took the pressure off me to kind of just keep playing my game,” Phegley

said. “Whenever the call came, I would be ready. I had a great year down there and I wanted to keep it rolling and not really think about getting the call too much. Now that I’m up here, hopefully, I can help this team win.”

Phegley said he wasn’t too surprised when the Sox called him up Friday. Manager Robin Ventura plans to split playing time equally between Phegley and Tyler Flowers.

“I think I put together a good year and kind of felt it coming,” Phegley said. “I was getting a little anxious. …

We were on a two-day trip to Gwinnett and I didn’t have much of anything with as far as clothes or anything. I hopped on the plane down to Tampa with what little I had and had to hit the ground running.”

Crain progressing: Reliever Jesse Crain (right shoulder strain) says his throwing shoulder is pain free after going on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday.

Crain said his right shoulder was still sore through Saturday, but he believes he’s ready to start strengthening it before beginning baseball activities. This is the third time since 2009 that Crain has experienced a shoulder strain. It will prevent him from participating in the All-Star Game on July 16 at Citi Field in New York.

CHICAGO – The Cubs aren’t holding back in moving any tradable players.

Monday’s deal, which sent outfielder Scott Hairston and a player to be named later to the Washington Nationals for minor league right-hander Ivan Pineyro and a player to be named later, marked the Cubs’ second trade in the past week.

The Cubs recalled left-hander Brooks Raley from Triple-A Iowa Scott Hairston before Monday’s game to add depth in the bullpen. The Cubs don’t have too many quality outfield options on the 40-man roster to fill Hairston’s spot on the bench.

Junior Lake, an infielder who has been playing in the outfield at Iowa for the past month, could be called up at some point within the next month, especially if the Cubs trade right fielder Nate Schierholtz before the July 31 deadline. There are currently two spots open on the Cubs’ 40-man roster.

“We’ll probably keep Raley up until our bullpen is well rested,” general manager Jed Hoyer said. “We’ll make a final decision at that point, but we would like to add another right-handed bat.”

Hairston’s departure also forced

manager Dale Sveum to adjust his plans for the designated hitter spot against the Sox. Sveum originally wanted Alfonso Soriano to DH to keep his legs fresh, but with two fewer outfielders available – Brian Bogusevic is still day to day (hamstring) – catcher Welington Castillo was supposed to get the opportunity. Castillo, however, was scratched from the lineup becauase of flu-like symptoms, and was replaced by Luis Valbuena.

Wood unlikely to pitch in All-Star Game: Barring a rainout this week, lefthander Travis Wood will likely not be able to pitch in the All-Star Game.

Wood is on track to pitch Sunday against the Cardinals in the Cubs’ final game before the All-Star break. According to the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Wood is eligible to pitch up to an inning in the All-Star Game if he wanted to, despite starting Sunday.

However, Sveum doesn’t expect that will happen. Because of a taxed bullpen in addition to starter Carlos Villanueva building his pitch count since joining the rotation, Sveum implied it would be too hard to move Wood’s start to another day.

“We didn’t really have the ability to do that,” Sveum said. “Hopefully, he gets to pitch in a lot more All-Star games. You try not to adjust things for something like that even though he obviously made the team and it’s going to be a great experience.”

Matt Weber has operated off the local golf radar for a long while, having been ruled ineligible for most of his high school season as a junior and playing more national events this summer than tournaments in the area.

Rest assured, though, Weber’s game has not been in hibernation.

The 17-year-old Burlington Central senior from St. Charles is preparing for today’s start of the Rolex Tournament of Champions, a fourday American Junior Golf Association event in Lancaster, Pa. “I honestly think it’s been one of my better summers,

playing-wise,” Weber said.

“My game has been feeling good. I’m really looking forward to high school golf, getting out there and winning some invites and hopefully make a run at state.”

It’s little surprise Weber is already champing at the bit for high school golf. His junior season ended early after the IHSA denied his exemption request to be allowed to play in a tournament in West Virginia in late August.

“We started asking them before we made our travel arrangements and they took about a month and a half to make a decision, and told us about five days before we were leaving,” Weber said.

MacKenzie remembers forming those feelings when his eighth-grade club team traveled to South Bend, Ind., for a tournament and attended a college game between Notre Dame and Syracuse as part of the event.

“Just watching those guys play and hanging out with my friends, it was a great experience,” MacKenzie said. “I just said I want to be one of those guys and ever since then I’ve been working and surrounding myself with everything lacrosse.”

That mindset shifted into overdrive in June, when MLL officials informed MacKenzie that the league had chosen him as one of 20 fantasy candidates.

Already juggling morning football workouts and his youth coaching duties, MacKenzie corralled his buddies when he envisioned his best chance to get to Charlotte.

“I definitely see the dedication, and I can really tell that he loves the game.”

Candidates had the options of submitting a video, photo or essay illustrating their lacrosse fandom. Fellow captain Frank Ranfone, a midfielder for Guilford (Conn.) High School, also entered a video.

MacKenzie’s piece is set to music, an instrumental song called “The Intro.” As MacKenzie begins receiving recruiting interest – his first letter, from Beloit College, arrived recently – his friends know he’s far from finished with lacrosse.

He always shows me his gear.

He always talks about the big tournaments that he goes to,” Prestemon said. “I definitely see the dedication, and I can really tell that he loves the game.”

MacKenzie, father call audible Cameron MacKenzie was a Tri-City Chargers football player looking for a new spring sport when he got his lacrosse calling.

His father, Scott, caught the bug then, too, and even coached Cameron’s first developmental team.

“I had to learn as quick as I can more about the game,” Scott MacKenzie said.

Now a St. Charles North senior midfielder, Cameron MacKenzie balances lacrosse with his role as a wide receiver on the football team.

“I still do love football, but ever since I started playing lacrosse I wanted to do everything I could to be around it,” MacKenzie said. “Whether it was playing it myself or helping others by coaching it or just throwing the ball off the wall, I wanted to be around.”

Northern Illinois senior Aksel Bolin isn’t new to representing his home nation of Norway on the international stage.

In the past, he’s competed in the European National Championships, and he is playing for his home country at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia.

Bolin had six points as Norway opened the tournament with a 94-71 loss to Lithuania on Sunday, and added another six in his team’s 106-74 win over China on Monday.

Norway continues tournament play Wednesday against Finland, and concludes the preliminary round by taking on Chile on Thursday and Brazil on Friday.

Bolin took some time to talk about about competing for his country at the tournament. The following is an edited transcript:

Nitz: How did you end up getting a roster spot for Norway?

Bolin: The U23 national team is a team (with players) born between 1989 and 1991 and we have made big things happen with this squad through previous national teams in the U16, U18 and U20. We had around 20 to 25 guys at the first tryouts but narrowed it down to the guys that have been the biggest factors for our success during previous years and that know how to play together.

Nitz: You’ve competed with the Norwegian national team before, at the

European National Championships from 2007 through 2010. What has the experience been like?

Bolin: I’ve played with the U16, U18, U20 and the senior team and it has always been a great experience coming into different tournaments being the underdog and beating bigger teams.

Nitz: What does it mean to represent your country in an event like this? Norway is in a pool with Brazil, Chile, China, Finland and Lithuania. Where do you think your toughest competition will be?

Bolin: It is huge to represent my country in Russia.

This event is similar to the Olympics and everybody is looking up to you. We have around 100 athletes traveling from Norway and representing in different sports. It is a great honor playing with our country’s flag on our chests.

The best teams in our group should be Lithuania, China and Brazil.

Nitz: In international competition, are there any rule changes or differences from NCAA competition that you really have to get used to?

Bolin: The main differences are that the shot clock is at 24 seconds and that there are four quarters instead of two halves.

Nitz: Have you ever been to Russia before? Anything you’re looking forward to doing in Kazan during your down time?

Bolin: I’ve never been to Russia before, so I’m really excited. I’m looking forward to going to watch a lot of different sports and playing some really high-level basketball.

It takes Mary Bridget Davies about an hour to physically become Janis Joplin.

As for the mental and vocal preparation, “it happens throughout the day with me,” says Davies, 34, sitting in her dressing room at Arena Stage in Washington. The star of the blockbuster hit “One Night With Janis Joplin,” at Arena for the second summer in a row (“Back by popular demand!”) and heading to Broadway in the fall, is wearing black leggings, a gray T-shirt, and neon pink studded flip-flops. Her long brown hair – which she is contractually obligated not to alter – is wavy and still damp from the shower. “As soon as you wake up and open your eyes, you test your voice to see where you are,” she says.

Davies has been at this for a while.

“I was a fan my whole life,” she says. “Screaming along to ‘Piece of My Heart.’ ... I think every kid who goes through their misfit phase finds Janis.”

When Davies was growing up in Cleveland, she dressed like Joplin for Halloween. This was in the ’80s; her friends thought she was Elton John.

Now Davies has access to the good stuff: costume pieces based on Joplin’s real clothing from Made for Pearl, a clothing and accessories company based in Los Angeles run by Malyn Joplin, the singer’s niece.

“The costumes really help,” Davies says. Slipping into Joplin’s attire, with its bohemian-meets-every-itemin-your-grandma’s-closet-piled-onat-once look gives you “that force-ofnature feeling. You feel like a sheriff.

This unstoppable force. She was so free that anything you have going on in your life, you can bring it to your performance.”

Davies slides into blue jeans with rhinestone-encrusted flared bottoms and zips on heeled black boots. She loops necklaces over her head and bracelets over her wrists by the handful. By the time she’s done, she jingles like a wind chime as she walks, jewelry clinging and clanging with every step. Her posture relaxes, her limbs go loose. She trades her soft Midwestern vowels for Joplin’s Texan twang, a drawl just-so-slurred by drink.

Joplin died of a heroin overdose in 1970 at age of 27, about two weeks after Jimi Hendrix died with the same number of birthdays to his name – everybody knows that part – and Davies acknowledges the shadow that such an exit can cast. But Joplin, she insists, “wasn’t this loudmouth junkie who came onstage and screamed. She was so intelligent. The funniest girl around.”

“She was a raw, visceral nerve. You could feel it in your heart and your fingertips when she sang.”

Davies thinks that the Joplin howl is “part of [my] DNA. I just think that structurally, on a molecular level, I am physically capable of doing this show six times a week. ... It’s like exercise. Over the years, in my own time and in my own band ... I’ve laid the foundation to do repeat performances.”

Her natural singing voice is “more soulful” and a bit less scream-y. “I put a lot of the scream and scratch and wail on for Janis, it’s just fun. It feels so good. I know why she did it. It’s cathartic. It’s like therapy, on stage.”

Davies spent her early 20s fronting

a blues band in Cleveland (they even changed their name for her, from Blues on Purpose to the Mary Bridget Davies Group) until she joined the national tour of “Love, Janis” in late 2005. She starred in the show on and off for four years and has been performing in “One Night With” since last summer.

Earlier, when Davies was styling (or, more accurately, de-styling) her hair – head upside-down, fingers ravaging her locks from the roots to the tips, blow dryer blaring – she discussed the key to embodying the Joplin aesthetic. She was talking about her hair, but she could have been talking about all of it: the voice, the body, the spirit.

“It has to be as wild and out of control as possible,” she said, flipping her head back up and teasing a few more strands. The end result was everything a fashion magazine teaches women to fix: frizzy, bushy, unmanageable. This was beyond bedhead, past hangover hair. It was a mess. A beautiful mess.

Davies admired her work in the mirror and smiled wide. “There it is.”

Painful fibroids can be surgically removed Dear Doctor K: I saw my doctor for intense pain and heavy bleeding during my periods. It turns out I have fibroids. What are my treatment options?

Dear Reader: A fibroid is a lump or growth in the uterus. The uterus is made of a special kind of muscle. The muscle doesn’t do much most of the time, but once a month, it ejects the bloody discharge that collects inside it.

During pregnancy, it expands to accommodate the growing baby. And, of course, the uterus squeezes out the baby at the time of birth.

Fibroids are balls of uterine muscle. They are almost never cancerous, but they can cause severe pain and discomfort, most often during menstrual periods.

In some cases, fibroids can cause infertility or repeated miscarriages. Fortunately, many treatment options exist.

Fibroids can be as small as a pea or as large as a basketball (really). They are usually round and pinkish, and they can grow anywhere inside or on the uterus.

Some women with fibroids do not have symptoms and may not realize they have them until a gynecologist feels them during a pelvic exam. Small fibroids that

In other cases, women experience pain and heavy bleeding. A doctor may prescribe medications that stop the ovaries from making the female hormone estrogen, which fibroids need in order to grow. This controls excessive bleeding and temporarily shrinks the fibroids. When the medication is stopped, periods return and fibroids start growing again.

Fibroids that cause severe symptoms or interfere with fertility may be surgically removed.

There are several techniques: • In a myomectomy, the fibroid is cut from the uterine wall.

Myomectomy allows a woman to keep her entire uterus in case she wants to have children. In some cases, a traditional surgical approach is needed. The doctor makes a large incision in the lower abdomen, sees the uterus directly and cuts out the fibroids.

Often a less invasive procedure, laparoscopic surgery, can be done. A flexible tube or scope is placed through those

incisions. At the end of the scope is a light, a camera and surgical instruments that the doctor can manipulate. Instead of seeing the uterus and fibroids directly, the doctor sees them on a video monitor and watches the surgery she is doing on the monitor.

Because laparoscopic procedures are less invasive, people recuperate faster.

• In a hysteroscopic resection, a viewing instrument called a hysteroscope is inserted into the uterus through the vagina.

Surgical instruments attached to the hysteroscope remove fibroids growing inside the uterus.

• In the X-ray-guided procedure called uterine artery embolization, material is injected into the arteries that provide blood to the fibroids. Starving the fibroid of blood shrinks it.

• Hysterectomy involves the removal of the uterus. Once the uterus is removed, a woman can no longer bear children.

Fibroids often shrink on their own after menopause, because they no longer have enough female hormones to grow.

behavior confuses teen Dr. Wallace: I’m 18 and dating a guy who is 19. We have been seeing one another for six years. I still live at home, but he lives in an apartment with his older brother.

Jake is a super guy, sweet, generous and courteous, but he has a terrible temper.

Lately he has been having temper tantrums regularly – at least once on every date. Many things trigger him off.

A bridge player chooses a bid for two reasons – to describe his hand as accurately as possible and to reach the right final contract. Of course, they are symbiotic, one helping the other.

However, sometimes it isn’t obvious what bid to make. Look at the South hand. You open one spade, and partner responds two clubs. What would you rebid?

A columnist explained that with 6-4 shape, opener rebids in his six-card suit with a minimum, but shows the side suit when he has extras. That is true only when the four-card suit is a minor. When it is a major, opener always shows it. To rebid two spades here in principle denies four hearts.

Now look at the West hand.

What would you lead against seven hearts?

The writer gave a bizarre auction before discussing the play in seven hearts after West leads a low club. South wins with his queen, then should ruff a spade, cash the heart king, play a heart to his ace, ruff another spade, ruff a club to establish the suit, draw East’s last trump, and claim, the diamond ace being the entry to the club winners. He takes one spade, three hearts, one diamond, five clubs and the three ruffs.

But why would West lead a club? Perhaps he hoped that East was void in the suit. But if he had been, he probably would have made a Lightner Slam Double, asking for a lead in the first suit bid by dummy. A diamond lead defeats seven hearts. In general, do not lead suits bid by the opponents.
