Age: 18 Town: Downers Grove Education: 2013 graduate of North High School, freshman at the University of North Carolina Parents: Greg and Sue Buckley singer Florence Jenkins, who was “monumentally terrible,” Buckley said, but whose husband had enough money that she sold out Carnegie Hall. Eventually, Jenkins’ renowned lack of musical ability became a selling point of its own. The speech made Buckley the national champion in Impromptu Speaking in June at the National Forensic League’s tournament in Birmingham, Ala. The Downers Grove resident graduated in spring from North High School, where he competed in speech team all four years. He will attend the University of North Carolina in the fall. Buckley is North High School’s first national speech champion, and he finished eighth in the United States Extemporaneous Speaking category.

DOWNERS GROVE – Given a short phrase or noun – free of context – how quickly could you compose a five-minute speech explaining the concept? After drawing three topics from a hat, high school speech competitors such as Alex Buckley must pick one, then take two minutes to formulate a clever, five-minute recital to impress the judges. Last month, in the final round of the National Forensic League’s impromptu speaking category, Buckley pulled the phrase “It’s too bad stupidity isn’t painful.” Buckley’s take on the phrase roped together five minutes on famous historical figures who found success despite incompetence. “Some people, despite the fact that they make stupid mistakes, they’re able to find some success,” Buckley said in an interview with The Reporter. “Despite that success, we might wish there was some sort of pain to stop them, but there just isn’t.” Buckley’s rhetorical flourish spanned from President Ulysses S. Grant to the opera

Report released ahead of flood response meetings By ED MCMENAMIN emcmenamin@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove village staff released a 103-page report last week summarizing the April 18 storm that flooded more than 1,000 properties in town and overwhelmed storm sewer systems throughout the western suburbs. The summary and analysis gives key findings, preliminary recommendations for future improvements and maintenance advice for the storm water management system. Village staff and consulting engineers analyzed information provided by residents and business owners through meetings, photos, emails, surveys and videos to prepare the report, according to

the village. “We definitely want people to read it and let us know what they think,” village spokesman Doug Kozlowski said. Throughout this month, the village will host public meetings to discuss the findings and collect input, Kozlowski said. A final report with recommendations will be completed in August, in time for the 2014 budget process, which begins in September. He said the meeting schedule will be released this week. The meeting locations have yet to be determined. The meetings “will have a neighborhood focus in terms of the projects and issues that were outlined in the report,” he said. “They will be focused on the neighborhoods

where specific projects will be occurring.” Among several preliminary recommendations, the staff report advises the village to continue making improvements planned in the Community Investment Program. It also recommends buying houses in flood plains and demolishing them, in addition to acquiring land for flood storage. The report also urges the village to consider regulatory changes that reduce runoff and demand on the system, such as prohibiting sump pump and downspout connections to the system. According to the report, the 26 stormwater management projects – built at a cost of more than $20 million between 2008 and 2012 – worked

as designed and reduced flooding in the areas they serve. The report also made comparisons between April’s storm and the storm in 2006 that prompted the village to begin its stormwater infrastructure projects. The 2006 storm was shorter and more intense, but the storm in April dumped more rain overall over a longer period. In 2006, 3.8 inches of rain fell in one hour, affecting 200 parcels of land. On April 17 and 18 of this year, 6.7 inches of rain fell in 24 hours, affecting 1,500 parcels. The report also stated the ground already was wet before this year’s storm, while in 2006, rain fell on dry ground that absorbed some of the downfall.

Ask Dr. Webster

THE ORTHODONTIST Q: What does an orthodontist do? A: An orthodontist is a dentist who specializes in the use of braces, bands, wires and elastics to straighten teeth and correct misaligned bites, a condition called malocclusion. The roots of the word are the Greek “orthos”, meaning straight or perfect, and “dontos” tooth. In young patients, an orthodontist can influence incoming teeth and coax them into perfect alignment. The orthodontist’s role, though, is not strictly a cosmetic one. X-rays may show that teeth are coming in at improper angles. Misaligned teeth can cause problems with chewing, nutrition and speech and can also cause unusual wear on the teeth. Orthodontistry is one of nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association. All dentists, whether they select a DMD or DDS degree designation, go through the same basic education. Some dentists choose to go on for more education and training to specialize in a field. Orthodontists typically go through two to three years in a full-time orthodontics residency, where they learn about tooth movement and facial development. Talk with your dentist about whether you are a patient who could benefit from treatment by an orthodontist or one of the other dental specialists.

Downers Grove siblings tour China with dancing violinist group By ED MCMENAMIN emcmenamin@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – If playing violin and dancing at the same time isn’t task enough, try performing in front of a Chinese audience. “Here in the U.S., you’re expected to sit still and be quiet and listen and put your phone away,” said Downers Grove 18-year-old Aura Evans, a member of “The Allegro!!! String Performance Ensemble.” “In China, they’ll take out their cellphone and take pictures and talk to their friends.” Evans said the Allegro players realized the crowd wasn’t distracted; they were engaging with the show in a modern way. “It made it a lot more fun,” she said. “[The crowd was] texting their friends, ‘Oh hey, I’m at this really cool concert.’” Aura and two of her four siblings, Teddy, 14, and Max, 16, traveled with the Allegro

Aura and all four of her siblings were taught to play violin in the Suzuki method at the Western Springs school. Her older brother, Ames, 20, previously played in Allegro, which is for middle and high school students. The youngest in the Evans clan, Mike, 10, likely will follow in the sibling tradition and audition for the group when he is of age. During the tour, the mobile phone engagement from the crowd noticeably grew their audience, she said. One crowd member took a

YouTube video of the group performing “Chop Stickin,” which features a choreographed taekwondo fight between Teddy and Max in the middle of the song – the two brothers have black belts in the martial art. The video went viral, Aura said, and by the time Allegro played its final show in Shanghai, it was to a crowd of about 1,700. “Everybody loved [the taekwondo fight],” Teddy said. “They were screaming and clapping for us. At first, they don’t realize what’s going on; they’re like, ‘Why are they setting their violins down?’ It turns into something really cool.” He said the crowds in China were enthused to approach the performers after the show and pose for pictures. “They’d come up and give you a hug and a peace sign,” he said. When they weren’t on stage, the siblings had a chance to sightsee in the country. Teddy especially was taken by the architecture. His brother, Max, enjoyed the food. “You get introduced to so many different food styles,” Max said. “I tried snail, eel, octopus … I tried mussels for the first time in my life. You don’t really know what everything is; you just eat it.”

A fire caused damage to the men’s and women’s rooms of a McCollum Park concession stand July 3. A walker in the park called 911 when she saw smoke coming from the building about 5:25 a.m. July 3, according to Downers Grove police. Upon arrival, police and firefighters found a fire set in a men’s bathroom trashcan and smoke coming from a locked women’s room. A portion of the wall on the women’s side also was smoldering, according to police, and there was fire coming from the top of the south-facing gables. Firefighters broke in the women’s room and found a fire had been set in its trash can. Downers Grove police said the damage was minimal. The fire department did not provide information and said the fire still is under investigation.

8SOUND OFF A quiet holiday

I live north of Ogden in Lisle. The Fourth of July holiday for my neighbors and my family is no longer a celebration time for us. The fireworks on this side of Lisle has been turned into a war zone for us the past several years. We have to shut up our houses, we cannot enjoy the weather [and] we have to turn on our air conditioners even though it’s 70 degrees out. So our electric bills climb. We turn on two TVs to drown out the sounds of M80s. Our pets get sick. We don’t get any sleep. Calling the police does no good. The fireworks at the festival are fine and tastefully done, no gripes about that. But these M80 bombs for days straight are just a nightmare for us. This is a holiday? Not for us.

I would like to share my family’s Fourth of July’s holiday. Here’s the agenda for our celebration: 1. Run to the store early for provisions; 2. Make sure fire extinguisher is intact (in case roof is on fire); 3. Shut

all windows and doors by 11 a.m.; 4. Get all dogs medicated on Valium by 11:30 a.m.; 5. Turn on all TVs and radios; 6. Stay in all day and watch TV news on Iraq; 7. Get indoor grill hot and cook burgers; 8. Get ready for and possibly try to sleep over

deli meats, cheeses, dressings & more!

Friends for Downers Grove Township Senior Citizens lends a hand Along with longer lives, we are witnessing important changes for senior citizens in areas such as health, living arrangements and family relationships. As more of us retire, we replace our job responsibilities with leisure time activities such as travel, education, volunteer service and more. At the same time, there COMMUNITY exists a need for community VOICE services to provide information and/or assistance to Frank older persons in areas such Wurster as healthcare, transportation, housing, counseling, day care, companionship, recreation and financing. Fortunately, there are programs and services offered in our community for older residents. In an effort to best assist our senior residents, a new 501 (c) (3) foundation has been formed by Downers Grove Township to support the Senior Citizens Advisory Committee. The foundation will seek to enhance the quality of life of older adults by acting as a resource for funding programs and services for older adults. This new foundation operates as a not-for-profit group seeking monetary donations, contributions and grants to support programs and services for older adults. The Senior Citizens Advisory Committee of Downers Grove Township aims to foster the independence and well-being of older adults in our community. The committee successfully has developed several programs that assist senior citizens. These include a Dial-A-Ride transportation program, the Banner News newsletter, the Vintage Times cable television program, articles posted on the township’s website, safety and crime-prevention programs that include the popular “File of Life” medical information card and community “networking.” People who are interested in serving on a committee being formed are encouraged to send a resume to Frank Wurster, Supervisor, Downers Grove Township, 4340 Prince St., Downers Grove, IL 60515; frank.wurster@dgtownship.com. QUESTION: Do you think you get enough vacation time?

8LETTERS Supreme Court decision a call to action To the Editor: Through its decision in striking down Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act (VRA), the U.S. Supreme Court erased fundamental protections against racial discrimination in voting that have been effective for more than 40 years. Justice Department pre-clearance of changes in voting laws by covered states remains vital to protect minority voting rights and prevent backsliding. Only strong, immediate action from Congress can fix this huge mistake made by the court. We believe that the Supreme Court decision is naive. The progress we have made eliminating discrimination in voting is because of the VRA and its enforcement over the past four decades. The fact that the Department of Justice blocked more than 700 voting changes they found to be discriminatory from 1982 through 2006 speaks for itself. During the 2006 Congressional VRA re-authorization, a record of thousands of pages of testimony helped illustrate the continuing problems in covered jurisdictions. This pernicious discrimination is less visible today than what occurred decades ago but is no less harmful to the right to

vote. Overwhelmingly bipartisan Congressional action was taken in 2006 based on a solid case for the continued need of the Voting Rights Act. The League of Women Voters of Downers Grove/Woodridge/Lisle joins our fellow Leagues in urging Congress to restore the VRA to its full strength. The current Supreme Court decision is a great disappointment, but it also should be a great call to action by those who believe in free and fair access by every eligible voter. Peggy Healy and Hilary Denk Co-presidents, League of Women Voters of Downers Grove/Woodridge/Lisle

Local eye doctor recalls touching moment To the Editor: Looking back over my long career as an optometrist, there are many patients who I remember fondly, but only one who broke my heart. Early on I found myself working in a Medicaid office on the west side of Chicago. One day, in my waiting room, I found a police officer with a young male in handcuffs needing an eye exam. Although he was only 15 years old, his angry street wise appearance frightened me. As I began the exam, I soon realized this young man’s prob-

lem. I handed him a reading card and asked him to read. At first, he began to read fluently. By the time he had finished his third paragraph, however, his reading became slower, halting between words. Finally, he ended up simply staring at the card, saying nothing. At that point, I placed two lenses in front of his eyes, creating a reading glass prescription. He began to read again, quickly, with increasing emotion with each sentence. It was like watching someone learning to walk all over again. He then looked up at me with wonder. What had I done? When I explained that he had needed reading glasses in order to read, he began to cry. And not just cry. He cried like a child, gasping for breath, with tears streaming down his black leather jacket. At that moment, the officer placed his arm on the young man’s shoulder to console him. “I tried to tell my teachers, I tried to tell my mama,” was all the young man could say. The officer told me he would personally see to it that the glasses would be delivered. Then they left. I have often thought of that young man. He would be 50 years old today. Immigrants seek refuge, resources in DuPage County By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com WHEATON – A divorced woman from Mexico. A 75-yearold accountant who lived blocks from the presidential palace of Saddam Hussein during the American invasion. A Sudanese refugee who escaped war with her husband and 9-yearold son. A Bhutanese man who spent 18 years in a United Nations tent in Nepal. These are not just nameless and faceless people – they are residents of DuPage County. “A lot of people don’t realize that,” Emily Grey, the executive director of World Relief DuPage said. “Many people think that immigrants in the state are in Chicago. Really, 56 percent live in the Chicago suburbs, not in the city.” According to 2011 census numbers from the county, 18.4 percent of residents in DuPage are born in a foreign country. World Relief, a nonprofit that provides services to refugees and immigrants, has worked with 7,500 people from 125 countries in the past three years. Sara Anil, the mother from Sudan, said that she left her country in 1999 to escape the violence that has torn apart the region.

“We left Sudan to save our lives,” she said. She and her family reached Egypt, where they sought asylum at the U.N. They spent nearly two years there before being placed in the U.S. Despite not knowing where the U.S. was, the family chose to go to Chicago because Anil had heard about it in school. A World Relief volunteer who knew Arabic met the family at the airport and the agency arranged for them to receive English classes and, eventually, jobs. But the transition to Glendale Heights was difficult. “It’s very hard, but there are more opportunities,” Delia Lopez said. She came to the U.S. from Mexico in 1994 to visit her brothers and decided to stay, despite her father’s wishes. She eventually got married, although her now-ex-husband insisted that she didn’t need to go to school to improve her English. Now she lives in Stone Park and is using resources at World Relief and Wheaton’s People’s Resource Center. “I hope these classes will help me get a better job,” she said. “My supervisor says ‘Dalia, you need a higher position, but you need to speak English more.’ So I’m working.”

Restaurant reviews

Freddy’s Pizza serves quality Italian by the pound CICERO – Freddy’s Pizza in Cicero has an unassuming exterior that certainly doesn’t scream fine Italian dining. The sign looks like it hasn’t changed in decades, and typical black metal furniture fills the patio packed with patrons. Through the doors is a scene most commonly found on the streets of Rome. Cured meats hang from the ceiling, while loaves of fresh-baked bread and rows of Italian goods line shelves. Instead of a menu, there are large platters of whatever was cooked that day. Trays of ravioli, salads, gelato and other dishes adorn counters as employees and customers jostle for position and food. Food is weighed and priced by the ounce – the old “say when.” My fellow diner and I were in heaven. We are Italian food lovers, having separately spent time in the country. What to order? We watched our fellow customers. They chatted with the friendly and helpful staff and each other in a way that only locals could – pointing and getting samples of things they were unfamiliar with or undecided on. Eventually, we opted for a little of a lot of things. First, we shared a Caprese salad with a side of salami. The mozzarella clearly was fresh, with a mild tang and wonderfully spongy texture. The tomatoes were perfectly ripe with a bit of crunch to them, and the olive oil in which it was bathed was exquisite. The salami had just enough saltiness to add a lot of flavor. Next was a ricotta gnocchi in a tomato cream sauce. The potato pasta was unbelievably soft, and the sourness of the ricotta was the absolute star of the dish. The mild sauce kept the emphasis on the gnocchi and creamy cheese. And the sauce had us sopping up the leftovers with chewy fresh bread. We couldn’t resist grabbing a piece of pizza: a slice with olive, artichoke and prosciutto. The toppings were high quality, and the crust chewy and crispy. The fresh cheese, lightly seasoned tomato sauce, salty pork, olive and artichoke just worked. The last piece of dinner was a fried rice ball called an arancini, a personal favorite. The outer layer of light breading was perfectly crisp, and the inside was filled with a combination of rice, tomato, spinach and melty cheese that speaks to your soul. Fried rice balls are one of the great guilty pleasures in

On the Web To see photos from Freddy’s Pizza, find this story online at PlanitLife.com/ mysterydiner life, and these were some of the better ones I’ve had this side of the Atlantic. Speaking of guilty pleasures, my friend and I couldn’t resist a last one. Not only does Freddy’s serve homemade gelato, but it serves gelato sandwiches. On bread. Really.

A scoop and a half of gelato on a special sweet bread is lightly toasted, cut into quarters and sprinkled with powdered sugar and chocolate sauce. How it works, I’m not sure. The different layers of sweetness each add a little something: creamy sweetness from the gelato, savory sweetness from the bread, and the dark sugary sweetness of the chocolate play together in a way that needs to be tried to be believed. For patrons dining in, there are tables inside and on the patio at Freddy’s Pizza, Gelateria and Italian Grocery. Another big plus about Freddy’s? That feast of fine Italian eating came without breaking any piggy banks.

Burdi’s back SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA The end of the College World Series hardly signaled the end of Nick Burdi’s baseball season. During the spring, Burdi, a sophomore for the University of Louisville baseball team, helped the Cardinals to the Big East Conference regular season title by saving 16 games as a relief pitcher.

Soon after Louisville’s season ended, Burdi joined some of the best players from around the country on USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team, which tours the country and the world playing college-level competition. Future Rockets Olekanma, Diggs focus on senior year before playing together at Toledo By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Richard Olekanma is proof that hard work can lead to positive results. It’s how the Downers Grove North senior earned a scholarship to continue his football career at the University of Toledo. He gave a verbal commitment to the Rockets on June 17. “I’m happy it happened. I just feel blessed,” Olekanma said. “It’s an opportunity that came about from all the hard work I’ve put in to be able to play at the next level. I’m really happy and I’m excited about it.” Maybe even better than securing a landing spot at the next level is that Olekanma will be joined by Trojan teammate Vontae Diggs, who gave his verbal commitment the same day. Olekanma had a scholarship offer from Southern Illinois in addition to Toledo. Diggs, also a senior, was courted by Ball State and Western Michigan, but Toledo offering Olekanma sealed the deal. “Ball State and Toledo were hand in hand, they were really close together,” Diggs said. “What drew me to Toledo was they offered Richard. Going to college with someone I know is going to help me go through that transition of being a freshman and being

around new people.” Diggs also liked the campus atmosphere, the community and the fact that the classes for his intended field of study, health sciences and kinesiology, are clustered together in their own building on campus. Olekanma was drawn in by the Rockets’ coaching staff and the campus. “I visited the campus after my vacation [this summer] and I love [head coach Matt Campbell], I love the plays, and I love the atmosphere on campus,” he said. While both are pleased to have their college futures line up, they are focused on making their senior seasons at North successful. After a 5-4 finish in the regular season, the Trojans made a playoff run to the Class 7A quarterfinals. They want to go even further this year. “We just have high expectations as a team this year,” Olekanma said. “We made it to the elite eight last year and hopefully we can make it two games past that [to the state championship game)] and bring home a trophy.” “I’m more worried about this season coming up because it’s my last season here,” Diggs said. “Being a Rocket is great and all, but as of right now I’m still a Trojan ,so we want to get this season going and bring home the gold.”

COLLEGE NOTES

Wivinis, K-State advance to NCAA super regional SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA Matt Wivinis (Downers Grove, Downers Grove South) and his Kansas State baseball teammates recently finished a memorable season. A sophomore this spring, Wivinis appeared in 21 games as a pitcher and made 14 starts. He finished the season with a 6-2 record and 4.72 ERA. He was second on the team in innings pitched (76.1) and third

in strikeouts (50) as he and the Wildcats went 45-19 overall and 16-8 in the Big 12 Conference to bring home the title. After the regular season, the Wildcats topped Wichita State, Bryant and Arkansas to win the NCAA Manhattan regional and advance to the NCAA super regional against Oregon State. K-State lost that series, 2-1, but Wivinis tossed a scoreless ninth inning to give the

Wildcats a chance to rally in the series finale, which they lost, 4-3. Early in the season, Wivinis tossed his first complete game at the college level March 9 in a 10-4 win over Cal-Poly. He needed just 91 pitches to earn the win.

Engel honored Kyle Engel (Downers Grove, Downers Grove South) was a key player for the Uni-

versity of Chicago baseball team this spring. The sophomore was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association Division III All-Region second team after batting .366, leading the team with five home runs and 43 RBIs, ranking second on the squad with three triple and finishing third with 10 doubles. Engel led the Cardinals with 13 multi-RBI games and added 15 multi-hit games to

his resume. He was especially impressive against Monmouth on April 14, belting three home runs and eight RBIs in a 22-4 victory. He had a productive weekend April 6 and 7, going 8-for-14 with four doubles and nine RBIs in three games against Beloit and Robert Morris University-Springfield, which helped him earn University Athletic Association Hitter of the Week honors for the first week of April.

According to Thompson, whose favorite courses include Trinity Links in Lockport and Highland Park in Joliet, the sport has several appeals.

“For the most part, it’s a cheap opportunity; the parks are mainly free to play,” she said. “And a wide variety of people can play. Your whole family can play, from a 5-yearold to a 70-year-old. Plus it’s a way to get out and get exercise.”

Disc golf is a growing sport and courses are popping up all over the Chicago area and the country in recent years. A c c o r d i n g t o dgcoursereview.com, a website that pools information about courses with an emphasis on player reviews similar to how yelp.com works for restaurants, there are 190 courses in Illinois and 4,267 in the United States. Most of those are free public courses built on park district land, but there are some private courses as well. Molex’s Lisle Campus had a nine-hole course built in 2010. Edgebrook Golf Course in Chicago has a set of 18 baskets set up on the golf course that allows players to play alongside golfers, and even rent a cart, as long as they are willing to pay for a round. Some courses have been around since the 1970s – West Park in Joliet was created in 1979 – but as the popularity of the sport has grown demand for courses has gone up. Among the 15 courses in the western suburbs, 11 were built since 2005 and six since

2010. “The last five years was a great growth period for disc golf,” said Cathy Kamm, a Lombard resident that designs courses with her husband, Mike, under the name Midwest Disc Golf. “Park Districts are looking for disc golf now. It used to be disc golfers looking for courses.” Kress Creek Farms in West Chicago is an example of a newer course built by a park district. West Chicago Park District Executive Director Gary Major said it was a simple story as to why they put in the 18-hole course in 2011. “We had 50 acres of land, but it had topography and trees on it,” Major said. “We had good space for it.” Since disc golf doesn’t require maintained greens and since flat, open land is typically undesirable, Kress Creek Farms was an ideal fit. Major said it was a relatively inexpensive venue to create and volunteers helped install the course. “It’s an activity a lot of people can play,” he said. “We get very good usage.” As disc golf continues to grow its cult-like following, more courses are likely to
