Festival perfect backdrop to reunion PARK DISTRICT DISH Kari Miller Every summer, area residents look forward to the return of Batavia’s largest event, Windmill City Festival. Out-of-town guests plan their vacations around the festival, and many locals who have moved away return during the two-and-a-half-day event.

The festival has become a reunion of sorts where longago friends can reconnect.

This year, the Batavia High School Class of 1983 will use Windmill City Festival as a backdrop for its 30th reunion.

Sarah Adams, a longtime Batavian, is organizing the reunion for the first time.

Other classes gravitate toward restaurants in Geneva for their reunions, she said, but she was determined to find a location in Batavia.

According to Adams, it was easy to choose the festival as a meeting ground.

“My friends and I have never missed the festival,” Adams said. “We go every year and see so many people from our class. We always say that it’s like a class reunion, and now it’s going to be.”

The group plans on hitting up Windmill City Festival on Friday evening to take advantage of the food booths, beer garden and main stage entertainment.

Carnival rides will be part of this year’s Windmill City Festival, which will be Friday through Sunday at the Batavia Riverwalk. For details about the festival, visit www.windmillcityfest.org. be in attendance at the reunion.

Growing up, Adams remembers attending the festival when it was known as “Boo Boo Days.” Her mom would give her a dollar, and she would find all sorts of trinkets at different shops that had set out displays on the sidewalk. By 1978 when the event became the Windmill City Festival, Adams found herself looking forward to the carnival every year.

The festival became a family tradition after Adams got married and had her two children. She was able to take her children to the car-

nival, watch the pet parade and participate in the fire hose challenge. Now that her kids are getting older, she enjoys attending the festival and reminiscing with old friends.

“The festival is always fun,” Adams said. “I love the bands, the food and meeting up with friends I haven’t seen for a while.”

This year, Adams will be meeting up with classmates from around the U.S., including California, Texas and Florida. Her classmate who moved to Japan is unfortunately unable to attend, but this year’s attendance proves she chose the right location.

“People who have never attended a class reunion are coming this year,” she said.

“As soon as I sent out the invite I had responses coming in. People are excited to return to Batavia and to attend the festival.”

What brings you here? I work at Harmony Music School in Sugar Grove. I’m a guitar instructor there. I got a phone call from the guy who owns the school, and he said that Kaneland High School was looking for a guitarist for “Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat.” And I’m like, oh sure. … I got my music later than everybody else, so I’m trying to keep up and practice hard.

When was the last time you were in a musical? The last time I helped out with a musical was in high school. That was in 2005 to 2009.

Are you in college now? I attend Northern Illinois University. I’m a guitar major, as well as an art major. I plan to go back to Waubonsee for guitar there.

How many instruments do you play?

Guitar. I played oboe for a long time. Guitar is my passion and my love. Also, marimba, bell, xylophone and piano.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? I always wanted to be an animator. That’s why I love to do art projects. … In high school, when I first started playing electric guitar, I played in our talent show for two years in a row, and that’s when I knew I wanted to be a professional guitar player. And now, I am.

Where’s the most interesting place you’ve played? Washington, D.C., for President Obama’s inauguration. I was actually three feet away from him and could have shook his hand, if I wanted to lose it. … I was playing oboe back then.

Where’s the most interesting place you’ve played the electric guitar? At Northern, at the Carl Sandburg auditorium, with my band.

What is your band’s name? Atra Nex. It’s Latin for “black death.” … We were playing straight-up metal music.

What is an interesting factoid about yourself? I am a perfectionist, and I love the color blue.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – For the past several weeks, clients who came to see Batavia dentist Kenneth Korpan had to make their way over rocks after the sidewalk was removed as part of the city’s $4.4 million Wilson Street streetscape project.

But Korpan, who owns Batavia Family Dental at 239 W. Wilson St. in downtown Batavia, is glad to see they are willing to endure the construction work.

“You got to live through it,” Korpan said. “I haven’t had any complaints from the patients. Hopefully, when it’s done, it will really look nice.”

Like other downtown business owners, Korpan is bearing with the work the best he can.

The project includes wider sidewalks and brick paver crosswalks at major intersections, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant ramps at sidewalk corners, pedestrian bump outs, the installation of pocket parks at intersections, traffic signal interconnection and modernization, water main replacement and sanitary sewer rehabilitation.

Despite the inconvenience, Korpan said it hasn’t affected the number of clients he sees.

“I don’t think it has hurt business,” he said. “Patients are still getting here. I have limited parking anyway.”

Korpan said one of the hardest things is trying to keep the outside of his business clean.

“I had a company come in to clean my windows two weeks ago,” Korpan said.

“But that’s what construction is like. I used to build custom homes.”

Access to Wilson Street businesses is being maintained during the project. The city is working to minimize

any disruptions.

For example, the majority of utility work is being done at night. But Gene Olmstead, owner of Olmstead’s TV and Appliances at 221 W. Wilson St., said he would rather see workers able to operate as much as possible in order to complete the project as soon as possible.

“The city needs to let them work,” he said. “They have such restricted hours, they are not able to get anything done.”

To help bring customers into the store during the construction work, Olmstead has hung a sign on the side of his building that states “Construction Chaos Sale.”

The sign also directs customers to park behind his building in order to avoid some of the construction work.

He believes the project has

hurt his business.

“It’s not going to help,” Olmstead said.

Batavia MainStreet Executive Director Joi Cuartero sends a weekly email to downtown businesses to update them on the project, information they can pass on to their customers.

“As long as customers know what to expect, they feel more at ease,” she said.

“It can be intimidating, if you are not always around construction.”

Korpan said the information has been helpful.

“They are letting us know exactly what is going on,” he said.

Cuartero said the project remains on schedule.

“We are going to try to do as much as we can for the businesses,” Cuartero said.

“We are all working together as much as we can.”

Teens ticketed for crashing into porch Attempt to pass vehicle causes two wrecks

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com BLACKBERRY TOWN SHIP – The son of Paul Ruby, founder of the Paul Ruby Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, was one of two teenage boys involved in driving their vehicles into a porch late Friday.

Wesley B. Ruby, 17, of the 39W600 block of Carney Lane in Blackberry Township, was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, according to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office crash report.

The other driver, Collin K. Steel, 17, of the 0N500 block of West Weaver Circle, Blackberry Township, was ticketed for disobeying a stop sign.

Both are scheduled to appear in court July 24, according to the crash report.

Paul Ruby is the general manager of the Herrington Inn and Spa in Geneva, as well as the founder of a nonprofit organization that raises money to find a cure or effective treatment for Parkinson’s.

Ruby was diagnosed in 2006 at age 42.

Ruby did not return a voice mail message seeking comment.

According to the crash report, Wesley Ruby was driving a 2006 F-150 Ford pickup, and Steel was driving a 2006 Lincoln, both going south on Brundige Road at the intersection of Armstrong Lane in the Mill Creek subdivision.

Steel attempted to pass Ruby’s pickup just as Ruby turned left, causing the passenger side of the Lincoln to strike the driver’s side of

the pickup, according to the crash report.

The two vehicles then continued in an arc, and both rammed into the front porch of a corner house on the 0N500 block of Armstrong Lane, causing damage to the porch and stairs, the report states.

Both Ruby and Steel were released at the scene by the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District, contrary to earlier reports that they were taken to a hospital. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage and were not drivable, the report states.

Neighbor describes man shot by police as ‘completely normal’

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA TOWNSHIP – Ian Avery said he didn’t know what could have compelled his friend Luke Bulzak to point a rifle at Kane County Sheriff’s Office deputies Monday morning during an incident at Bulzak’s residence.

A sergeant who was at the scene shot Bulzak, 52, and he later died.

“He was not the type of guy to do that,” said Avery, who lived near Bulzak in the Heritage West subdivision. “He was completely normal. I’ve never seen him upset. I really want to know what made him do it.”

In a news release issued Monday from the sheriff’s office, police said they encountered Bulzak outside his residence with a rifle.

Police said they were dispatched at 11:40 a.m. Monday to the 3S300 block of Elfstrom Trail in Batavia Township for a report of a man

making suicidal threats.

Police said they tried to get Bulzak to drop the rifle, but he refused and pointed it at the deputies. The sergeant then shot Bulzak. No one else was injured in the incident.

Bulzak was on the roof, Kane County Sheriff’s Lt. Pat Gengler said.

“He was on his roof and pointed the rifle at our officers when he was shot,” Gengler said. “There is a major tactical advantage for him being on the roof.”

The sergeant who shot Bulzak is a 20-year veteran of the sheriff’s office. The sergeant was placed on paid administrative leave, pending a review of the incident, police said. The Kane County Sheriff’s Office and the Illinois State Police were conducting a review of the incident.

Incidents like this are rare in Kane County, Gengler said.

“2003 was the last time a deputy discharged their weapon, but

the last time there was a fatal officer-involved shooting by our agency was at least 20 years ago,” he said.

The Kane County Coroner’s Office performed an autopsy Tuesday, and toxicology samples will be sent to a forensics lab.

Avery, 17, said he was not home at the time of the incident. Avery said he and Bulzak were close friends. Bulzak suffered from Parkinson’s disease, Avery said.

“I was probably the closest thing he had to a son,” Avery said.

“He didn’t have kids. He just needed help around the yard. I helped him fix his pool in the last couple of weeks.”

In turn, Bulzak always lent a hand to others, Avery said.

“He was so willing to do things for other people,” Avery said. “He helped me put a stereo in my car.”

Bulzak’s wife, Anita, said her husband “was a wonderful man,” but said she did not want to comment about the incident.

Registration open for asana workshop

GENEVA – Kane County has taken key steps toward the construction of two bridges that transportation planners believe will alleviate congestion problems in Elburn and on the county’s north end.

The County Board unanimously voted Tuesday to accept jurisdiction over Anderson Road from Route 38 south to Prairie Valley Street in Elburn.

The procedural move will allow the county to move ahead with plans to extend Anderson Road south over the Union Pacific Railroad to Keslinger Road.

Officials with the county and the village of Elburn have long sought the extension and overpass to provide an alternative route for traffic that now uses Route 47. In support of the Anderson Road project, the county and village have obtained $18 million in federal and state road funds.

The Kane County Division of Transportation had hoped to begin work on the project last year, but the project was held up amid months of lingering talks between Elburn village officials and Geneva-based land developer ShoDeen Inc., which owned much of the land on which the new road is scheduled to be built.

KDOT intends to begin construction this fall.

The jurisdictional transfer of the existing stretch of Anderson Road near Route 38 had been planned since 2012, under an agreement between the county and Elburn.

Those agreements also include a provision calling on the county to hand Anderson Road back to the village. But some on the County Board

County Board member Phil Lewis, R-St. Charles, compared Anderson Road’s future use to that of Kirk Road or Randall Road.

“Anderson Road is likely to meet the needs of the region,” Lewis said.

Kane County Deputy Transportation Director Tom Rickert told County Board members that the village never envisioned Anderson Road to be a regional highway like Kirk or Randall. Instead, he said the village determined the Phil Lewis road should be Kane County Board member “an alternative route” for traffic rather than “a bypass” of downtown Elburn.

Board members approved the transfer, which included language calling for Anderson Road to “be permanently added to the highway system of Kane County as County Highway 85.”

Also on Tuesday, the County Board approved a package of engineering contracts for the Longmeadow Parkway.

Planned to be built on the county’s north end between Route 62 and Huntley Road, the project would provide a toll bridge over the Fox River that county officials believe will reduce congestion on other bridges.

The engineering work will allow the county to gain a better idea of how much the project will cost, county officials have said. Prior estimates have pegged that cost at more than $110 million.

The project is expected to be financed through $1 to $1.50 per crossing tolls at the new bridge, and federal and state money.

Motorcyclist charged after alleged 150 mph ride

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A Sugar Grove man faces several charges, including a felony, after police said he was driving “well in excess” of 150 mph on a motorcycle from St. Charles to Elburn.

Zachary John Robinson, 26, of the 700 block of Wild Ginger Road, Sugar Grove, was charged June 30 with aggravated fleeing and eluding police, two counts of speeding, improper overtaking of the left lane, passing in a no-passing zone, operating an uninsured vehicle and failing to display regis-

tration.

Police reports said a St. Charles police officer observed a motorcyclist “take off at a high rate of speed” when Zachary John a traffic light turned green Robinson at the intersection of Bricher and Randall roads in St. Charles. Police reports said Robinson was traveling about 75 mph in a 45 mph zone.

Kyle J. Devaney, 25, of the 2100 block of Williamsburg Avenue, Geneva, also was charged June 23 with

Elburn. Robinson had also stashed away his helmet and a backpack, which both were recovered by police.

The motorcycle had no speedometer or review mirrors, and no license plate was displayed. Robinson’s backpack contained nine 12-ounce cans of beer and a large bottle of whiskey that was half full.

Robinson later stated that he was wearing headphones and “had no idea that police were behind him,” police reports state.

Robinson was charged in March for fleeing and eluding police in Sugar Grove, according to his criminal history.

AURORA – Physicians Immediate Care has opened specialized kid-friendly pediatric rooms at clinics in several cities, including Aurora.

In an effort to make urgent care less scary for young children, Physicians Urgent Care has introduced pediatric rooms with specialized equipment and a staff trained in treating children under the age of 7.

The pediatric exam rooms include baby scales, which register quickly without the need to also weight the parent, along with pulse oxygen monitors, allowing staff to measure blood-oxygen levels without drawing blood.

New police chief settling in

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Pat Rollins has worked his way through the ranks in law enforcement over the past 23 years, and Monday he started his newest post as Sugar Grove’s police chief.

Rollins, 51, came from the Lombard Police Department, where he has spent his 23-year career. There, he served for about 12 Pat Rollins years as deputy chief, overseeing patrol shifts and operations. Before that, he oversaw budgets, records, accreditation and property evidence. His other titles include patrolman, sergeant, deputy police chief and lieutenant.

Although he has filled in for Lombard police chief when he took vacations, Rollins said this is his first permanent job as a police chief.

He said he wanted to apply for the job as soon as he saw the description in the posting.

“When I read the advertisement for the job description, I thought it would be the perfect fit for me,” he said.

“The opportunities that were present and the experience [requirements] listed in the flier hit home.”

Rollins said he’s transitioning into the job by introducing himself to the staff, giving them opportunities to ask questions and getting up to speed on any open items he needs to tackle.

One interesting factoid about Rollins is he might have indirectly played a role in Europe winning the Ryder Cup at Medinah Country Club in Medinah in September. When one of Europe’s top players, Rory McIlroy, confused his central time tee off with eastern time, Rollins stepped in to rush McIlroy to the greens just in time. Rollins said he was just in the right place at the right moment.

Sugar Grove Trustee David Paluch, who organizes the parade and opening ceremonies, said he was surprised there wasn’t more celebration involving a significant anniversary for the proclamation. He was familiar with the Lincoln impersonator from a past Corn Boil event, and he said bringing him back would provide a good opportunity to drive home the point about the proclamation, which led

to the freedom of slaves.

“It’s a chance to remind people about our history, of what, unfortunately, millions of people had to go through not too long ago,” Paluch said.

The Lincoln impersonator will speak at the opening ceremony and will be available for more than an hour on opening night, Paluch said.

Before the parade, there will be booths, a carnival and craft vendors at 4 p.m. Bingo starts at 5 p.m.

There will be performances from local bands throughout the festival. EPIC and 7th Heaven will appear July 26. Waubonsee Steel Drums, Sole City Juke Band, HillBilly RockStarz and Hi Infidelity will perform on July 27. As One, Serendipity, 4th Point and Big Daddy Weave will appear on July 28.

CHARLES – In an effort to draw a mosquito control company to St. Charles, the city’s Planning and Development Committee on Monday approved spending up to $275,000 for a pilot incentive program designed to attract high-technology businesses and encourage the employment of local workers.

The Clarke Group is considering locating its headquarters to either St. Charles or to Ames, Iowa. If the company moved to St. Charles, it likely would be located at 675 Sidwell Court, according to meeting documents.

Lyell Clarke, CEO of the company, told aldermen Monday that if the company moved to St. Charles, it would create 71 new jobs with an average salary of $80,000, and 15 additional jobs with an average salary of $60,000 likely would be created in the first five years. The company anticipates that its total capital investment on the property

Through the pilot program, the city would reimburse the company with a maximum of $275,000 over five years. The city would pay the company if it meets a number of stipulations. In the first year, the city would pay $1,000 for the total number of jobs created with an annual salary of $50,000 or greater at the St. Charles facility. That numerical value declines each year, with the payment totaling $250 by the fifth year.

The same type of scale is applied to another stipulation to encourage the company to hire people living within St. Charles city limits, or within five miles. The incentive

program also applies to paid interns who live locally.

Economic Development Director Chris Aiston said if the company chooses the St. Charles location, the city would see a return on its investment in the pilot program, “no question about it.”

He said an impact study from Northern Illinois University’s Center for Governmental Studies showed the company would generate an estimated $28.1 million annually in economic activity in the local region. An expansion that’s planned later would add 15 more jobs and would generate $7.7 annually million annually in economic activity.

“When you bring in this much employment with that level of income, it will affect the local area,” Aiston said Tuesday. “People generally shop closer to where they live. We’re trying to incentivize the company to hire and retain people locally. It will affect our local economy, and that’s what the study indicated.”

ELBURN – Free eye screenings for youths will be on the menu at the next free spaghetti dinner night at the Elburn Lions Club.

The club has acquired a device that can screen the eyes of youths and will let parents know whether further treatment is necessary.

The machine will be set up, and youths – ages 6 months through teenagers – are invited to have the screenings from 5 to 7 p.m. July 23.

Results will be printed out while families take advantage of the free pasta supper, if they so desire. The free supper takes place on the fourth Tuesday of every month.

Club member Chris Halsey said the event is a perfect fit for the Lions’ mission of serving the public and aiding those who are visually impaired. Halsey said the screening results will indicate whether more attention is needed.

Runaway train THE WASHINGTON POST Barely three months after a fertilizer-plant explosion in West, Texas, claimed 14 lives, a runaway train bearing crude oil derailed early Saturday morning, igniting a fireball that killed at least 13 people in a small Quebec town near the Maine border. Some 40 people from Lac-Megantic are still missing, and much of the town – about 30 buildings – was incinerated.

The train, operated

by U.S.-owned Montreal Maine & Atlantic Railway Inc., had stopped for a routine crew change and inspection by an engineer, but then it started moving on its own, traveling nearly seven miles before it careened off the tracks. The crash remains under investigation, but one truth is already clear – there are real and oft-ignored dangers involved in the transfer of crude oil by rail.

In the midst of a boom in North American oil production, the amount of crude shipped by rail has skyrocketed. In 2008, 9,500 carloads were shipped by rail, the Wall Street Journal reported; by 2012, that had soared to 234,000 carloads. On balance, the exploitation of new oil fields, like the growth in natural-gas production, has been a boon to the U.S. economy and foreign policy. But infrastructure has not kept pace. Particularly as political opposition has slowed pipeline construction, oil transport has had to rely on a network of railways, some of which are outdated and in need

of repair. Investigators from Greenpeace found that some oil tank cars used in Canada and the United States were unsafe even 20 years ago. Along the same lines, in a 2009 report, the National Transportation Safety Board, investigating a derailment in Illinois, concluded that the outdated design of the cars was essentially a fuse waiting to be lit. A full report has yet to be released on the Lac-Megantic disaster, but, as The New York Times has pointed out, it looks as though the cars in question were of that same model.

Environmentalists are pressing President Obama to deny TransCanada Corp.’s application to build the Keystone XL pipeline that would move bitumen (a heavy, oil-like substance) from Alberta to the Gulf of Mexico.

Their chief objection is to the source of the oil, which they say cannot be extracted without more damage to the environment than occurs in typical oil drilling. But in their zeal to stop the project, they also have focused heavily on the supposed danger of oil pipelines.

The tragedy in Quebec is a reminder that no transportation method is without risk. Pipelines, properly built and maintained, offer the most secure, as well as most efficient, method. Whatever happens with the pipeline, though, a lot of oil will continue to move by train. The accident in Lac-Megantic should focus attention on the safety of the continent’s rails.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR It seems ironic To the Editor: It seems ironic that the Kane County Chronicle would criticize Alderman Mike Bruno and me for expressing different viewpoints in an opinion piece titled “Commission can benefit from multiple viewpoints” (July 6, 2013).

I’ve struggled with the issue of property rights and historic preservation myself, but the Historic Preservation Commission is there to apply the standards equally to all properties within the historic district.

Mr. Zac Ploppert didn’t seem to comprehend this, according to some of his campaign statements, and I’m not sure that he truly understands the mission and the role of HPC. If one doesn’t agree with the fundamental principles of an organization,

does it make sense to become a part of that organization? I wouldn’t want anyone on the Beautification Committee if they didn’t agree with the purpose of the program. I wouldn’t expect people to seek a position on the park district board if they didn’t think public parks were a good idea, or that we shouldn’t use public money for parks. The same holds true for any organization that has been created to serve a well-defined purpose.

Mr. Ploppert’s expressed opinion about personal property rights taking precedence over historical preservation guidelines leads me to believe that he does not fully comprehend the purpose of HPC. We either preserve historic property according to guidelines, or we eliminate HPC and let the property owners decide

totally what they wish to do with their property. Different viewpoints should be welcome in any governing body, but an opinion at odds with the main purpose of that body seems counterproductive.

My reading of our preservation ordinance is that the intent is to appoint people to the HPC whose interest and experience relate to historic preservation and who are strong advocates of historic preservation. I may not agree with the City Council’s decision, but I will support it. I applaud Mr. Ploppert’s desire to serve, and I wish him well in his new position.

I hope that time will erase any doubts any of us may have had about this appointment.

Infrastructure projects at subdivision nearly complete

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Work has nearly ended to complete street and sidewalk projects, along with other infrastructure items, left unfinished by defunct developers in the Blackberry Creek subdivision.

And village taxpayers have not paid for any of it, an Elburn village official said.

After the housing market crash of 2008, the developer of Blackberry Creek, St. Charles-based B&B Enterprises, stumbled financially, resulting in banks foreclosing on a number of unsold lots in the subdivision.

The financial troubles left a number of unfinished public works projects in the subdivision.

Elburn Public Works Director John Nevenhoven said those incomplete items included streets left without the top layer of pavement, broken or unfinished curbs,

“... Blackberry Creek should inally function like a fully-developed subdivision.”

In 2010, the village moved to call in millions of dollars in bonds posted by the developer with two suburban companies to complete the work.

Nevenhoven said the bond companies opted to hire contractors to complete the work themselves rather than hand $2.8 million in bonded money over to the village.

“It doesn’t matter to us,” Nevenhoven said. “Six of one, half a dozen of the other, as long as the work gets done.”

He said the street repairs, sidewalk installations and other associated work began

in early May and are scheduled to be completed this week.

Should it pass village inspection, the village will sign off on the work and take over maintenance of all the constructed public improvements.

Nevenhoven said the village will give the bond companies more time to finish installing streetlights, for which contractors are awaiting delivery of equipment. And some gaps in the sidewalk network within the subdivision will remain until more new homes are built, he said.

“But Blackberry Creek should finally function like a fully-developed subdivision,” Nevenhoven said.

Group to host Fox River cruise Aug. 10 ST. CHARLES – The Valley of the Fox Group of the Sierra Club will host a Fox River cruise on the Saint Charles Belle, a replica 19th century paddlewheel steamboat.

What is being sought is funds for a video camera, green screen and software for video editing and a computer to manage video editing, Dolin said.

“It’s very exciting because the middle school does one

class a semester, and we’re making sure our equipment is compatible with theirs,” Dolin said. “The kids who can’t get into the class can use it, and those who go through the class can use the library to continue on with their projects.”

If the grant comes through, the equipment would be avail-

able to the public and businesses as well as to create videos to put on YouTube.

The library does not have to match the funds, but it would provide the staff, installation of equipment and infrastructure, because it already has a server capable of taking the data, Dolin said.

Sugar Grove library to celebrate 50th anniversary

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – The Sugar Grove Public Library is marking its 50th anniversary with a celebration from 4 to 5:15 p.m. July 21, officials said.

Library Executive Director Carol Dolin said a retro band, Ac Rock, will perform, and the Sugar Grove Historical Society will put together displays and photo albums on the library’s 50th year, as well.

“It will fit in with our summer reading theme, ‘Dig into reading. Dig into history,’ ” Dolin said.

Pat Graceffa said the library Friends are regrouping to be back to help the library, and the group will have two raffles at the 50th anniversary.

One raffle is a 50-50 raffle, with tickets $1 each. The other is to win four tickets to Raging Waves Water Park in Yorkville, donated by library board member Louise Coffman. Those tickets will

be $3 each, Graceffa said.

“We’re going to decorate with beach towels and accessories and books for the beach,” Graceffa said.

The library has put in so much money for new books and DVDs and to increase its hours, Graceffa said there is not much left over for beautification outside the building.

The raffles will raise money for that, she said.

“We are also going to ask people this fall, if they are dividing any of their plants,

if they would share with us and do beautification and planting in the fall,” Graceffa said.

“We’re hoping for drought-tolerant plants, [like] purple cone flowers, coreopsis, asters. Native plants would be wonderful – they just survive.”

Graceffa said any of the native prairie grasses would be welcome.

The Friends received a big donation of day lilies, so more of those won’t be needed, she said.

T. CHARLES – Dawn Zappitelli tore away from her job as president of Heartland Counseling Center in Elburn and headed for Pottawatomie Golf Course on Tuesday morning.

Business developers, substitute teachers, homemakers and other contemporaries joined her for the Pottawatomie Ladies League as they do each week. Not everyone realized the St. Charles Women’s Tournament title also was on the line, making for another leisurely nine holes.

“Golf is good therapy,” Zappitelli said, “even for therapists.”

Retiree Barb Christian emerged as the fitting winner, shooting a 48 and defeating Donna Lengle by scorecard playoff. Christian carded a 7 on the ninth hole to Lengle’s 8, but it was apparent scorekeeping was perfunctory.

Cheers of “Nice one!” and “There ya go!” provided the soundtrack for an event that could use the enthusiasm.

On the heels of several lean years – including a six-golfer turnout in 2011 – Pottawatomie pro Ron Skubisz and assistant Bill Ogiego folded the women’s tournament into the league schedule for the second successive summer.

“We’ve done whatever we can to accommodate, to keep the tournament going and accommodate as many women as we can,” Ogiego said. “So we just moved it to Tuesday and just said, ‘Hey, ladies, guess what: You’re in the tournament.’ “ ‘Really?’ ” Skubisz’s 23-year-old daughter, Katie, and former tourney champ Barb Lyon,

Oney Guillen eventually visited Ernie Colombe’s Sugar Grove home to discuss the Phantoms’ 17U program, and both parties came away enthused. Colombe called the whole scenario “just kind of luck, I guess.”

“I did ask him why us versus I’m sure he could get some experience in other avenues, but it’s just what he wanted to do,” Colombe said. “ … He’s a great guy,” Colombe added. “He’s a young kid trying to get his feet wet in managing and relates real well to the kids. I think he has a lot of good qualities and I think he’ll be a great coach down the line.”

Oney Guillen, 27, shares more than a last name with his famous father. Neither are strangers to controversy.

Ozzie Guillen, ending what had become a rocky relationship with then-Sox general manager Kenny Williams after the 2011 season, went on to manage the Marlins in 2012, but was fired after one subpar season in Miami.

The former Sox shortstop and World Series-winning manager has extra time on his hands these days, and made use of that by attending one of the Phantoms’ games a few weeks ago at North Central.

Carlson said Ozzie Guillen coached some first base and shared baseball advice with several of the players.

“Oney mentioned he’d come out to a few games, but I didn’t think he was going to come right away because he said that the day before, and Ozzie just showed up, and we were kind of Ty Carlson shell-shocked,” Carlson said. “It was really cool.”

Ozzie Guillen has a polarizing image in Chicago, largely because of his outspoken-to-an-extreme communication style. Oney Guillen seemed headed down that same path a few years back.

Oney Guillen drew widespread criticism for semi-frequently injecting himself into Sox business via sharp-elbowed remarks on Twitter, including calling former Sox relief pitcher Bobby Jenks an “idiot.”

Carlson said Oney Guillen seems to keep a decidedly cooler head these days.

“I think that a lot of people think just because of his Twitter and all that stuff he just tries to get attention. …

But I don’t think that at all,” said Carlson, an outfielder for the Phantoms and a seniorto-be at Kaneland. “He’s just a normal guy. He doesn’t try to seek attention or anything like that. He doesn’t go up to people and say ‘I’m Ozzie Guillen’s son.’ He’s just a cool guy.”

“People have a right to say what they want,” Colombe added regarding Oney Guillen’s history. “And in addition, we’re not in the paper every week, so I’m not too worried about that.”

The Phantoms have numerous local players on their 17U roster. In addition to Carlson, Kaneland players Nate Hopkins, Joe Laudont, Joey Panico and Curtis Thorson are on the team, as is Burlington Central’s Mike Lee. The team is 16-3 on the season, Colombe said, having just taken second place to the Phantoms’ 18U squad last weekend at a tournament in Valparaiso, Ind. Since players are typically multitasking between their high

school summer programs and other sports, the Phantoms typically only assemble for weekend tournaments. Three tournaments remain on the team’s schedule, including a summer-capping event July 26 through 28 at Northern Illinois University.

By mid-summer, some of the novelty of being coached

by Ozzie Guillen’s son has worn off, but Carlson said it’s still exciting to be mentored by coaches who have been around Major League Baseball most of their lives.

Oney Guillen typically doubles as the team’s third-base coach while Ozzie Guillen, Jr., and the team’s other coach, Jon Basinski, share first-base coaching duties. Carlson said the Guillen brothers occasionally speak Spanish to one another when they’re coaching the bases together.

The players usually don’t know what’s being said in those instances. Considering who is talking, it might be worth locating a translator to find out.

Skubisz, a family and consumer sciences major entering her senior year at Eastern Illinois, still lent some suspense as rain moved in on the final holes around noon. Her 49 was one stroke off the leaders, the same score as Roberta Wright.

Wright, whose child-rearing days are in the rearview, has enjoyed more time to golf and play tennis with her son and daughter, now in their

mid-20s.

She hones her skills in both sports while spending winters with her husband in Bluffton, S.C. “It’s a great golf community, tennis community, so we get to do both of my favorite things,” Wright said. “So we’ve been very fortunate that way.”

The 63-year-old Christian, a second-year league member, relied on “many, many years” of golfing experience – including 18 at Pottawatomie – en route to a personal-best round at St. Charles’ public riverside course.

She recorded pars on the par-3 fourth hole and par-4 fifth hole and stayed out of trouble apart from No. 3, which requires players to shoot over the Fox River to

reach the green.

“All my shots were good and I had a lot of one-putts, so that helped me,” Christian said. “The water hole wasn’t very well, but this was my best score.”

In its heyday, the women’s tournament adopted a multiweekend format of qualifying and match play similar to the city’s men’s tournament.

League members, who compete in their own tournament near the end of the session each August, haven’t minded the recent change.

Ty Carlson was at a Kaneland basketball practice when Ernie Colombe dropped by with a hard-to-believe bulletin: Carlson’s summer baseball team, the Kane County Phantoms, would be coached by former White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen’s son, Oney Guillen.

And oh, yeah, another of Guillen’s sons, Ozzie Guillen, Jr., would assist on the Phantoms’ coaching staff.

“Coach Colombe came in during a break and I didn’t really believe him at first because it was kind of weird because those are high-profile guys,” Carlson said. “I was kind of shocked. I didn’t believe it yet until the first practice when I saw Oney, and he was there.”

Colombe, girls basketball coach at Kaneland in addition to his role as the Phantoms’ director of baseball operations, is a huge Sox fan, having grown up near Midway International Airport. He said his 21-year-old son, Steve, who also assists in the Phantoms’ program, reached out to a handful of people, including Oney Guillen, about conducting private lessons, and the interaction spread to discussion of coaching openings as the Phantoms expanded their

The St. Charles North product’s baseball career with the Division III Duhawks was undermined by injury from the beginning, including labrum surgery his junior season after which, Misner never fully recovered his pitching prowess.

Misner remained with the program in moral support mode, and finally was summoned to the pitcher’s mound as a symbolic gesture in May in a game against Buena Vista University.

“Everyone was off the bench, everyone was up, everyone in the stands was excited – everyone knew what was going on,” Misner said. “It still gives me the chills right now thinking about it.”

Misner chuckled when recounting a decidedly un-Hollywood ending to the story; he was removed from the game after walking one batter and hitting another.

Then again, Misner can afford to laugh off his lack of on-field success. The doors opened through his college baseball experience could last a lifetime.

In January, Misner was elected chairman of the NCAA Division III Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, a oneyear term that began in May. Although Misner wrapped up his undergraduate studies this spring, he is allowed to serve in that role in the coming year while he completes a fellowship at Northern Illinois University as a bridge to his eventual sports administration master’s program at Ohio University.

Misner served as a Student-Athlete Advisory Committee member as an upperclassman at Loras – located in Dubuque, Iowa – before taking over in a leadership capacity.

“It wasn’t something I was randomly appointed to,” Misner said. “It was something the committee thought I’d be able to do, and I’m very excited for that. It’s something I can’t even put into words, how excited I am for it for this year.”

Misner’s involvement with the committee paved the way for travel to various convenTravis Misner t i o n s a n d events, including a pair of distant, overseas trips.

In March 2012, Misner represented the United States at a conference in Taiwan in which collegiate athletes from more than 60 countries compared notes on how college sports operate in their homelands.

“Frankly, people looked at us like we’re completely out there for putting as much emphasis as we do on collegiate athletics, but after we broke it down and kind of explained it, people were almost envious of the way we do it here,” Misner said.

That trip coincided with Misner’s 21st birthday, and he joked that the birthday only lasted six hours because of time lost while traveling.

Similarly epic travel awaits Friday, when Misner heads for Kazan, Russia, by way of Frankfurt, Germany, then Moscow. In Kazan, Misner will recap discussions that took place at last year’s Taiwan conference as part of the World University Games that are taking place next week in Russia.

Misnerthinkshe’swell-suited for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee because he’s not afraid to speak up for his convictions, even if it’s an unpopular viewpoint. He said among the hot-button issues during his time on the committee were discussing whether college coaches should be allowed to text message recruits and whether incoming student-athletes should undergo

sickle-cell trait screening.

“We spent probably five or six hours over the course of two, three meetings just talking about those specific issues,” Misner said. “You want to pull your hair out by the time the vote is up to membership, but it’s always worth it because it ends up helping out the student-athletes.”

Misner, whose younger brother, Tim, recently concluded his St. Charles North baseball career, said he’d like to work in college athletics long-term, musing that a return to Loras as athletic director one day would be ideal.

He’s well on his way to compiling quite a resume.

“I’m just very excited and very grateful for everything that’s happened,” Misner said.

“I did pretty well in school – I wasn’t the best student and I clearly wasn’t the best athlete, but it’s opportunities I’ve been able to take advantage of that really have helped me.”

Weimer steps down as VB coach at Kaneland

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com Todd Weimer won just seven matches combined in his first three seasons coaching the Kaneland girls volleyball program, and went out fresh off an IHSA Class 3A regional championship.

The Knights made drastic improvement under Weimer, who took over the program in 2005 and turned in his letter of resignation last Todd Weimer week, informing players Tuesday night after summer league matches.

Weimer, a middle school physical education and health teacher in Kaneland’s district, said he needed to free up time for his wife and 2-year-old daughter, Quinn.

“It’s one of the toughest things I’ve ever had to do,” Weimer said. “It’s obviously an extremely tough decision just because I bleed black and white and I love Kaneland.”

Weimer will remain as boys volleyball coach at St. Charles

North after guiding the North Stars to a third-place state finish in the spring. He will join North’s girls program as JV coach under head coach Lindsey Hawkins but said it was too draining to be a head coach at two schools.

The Knights’ regional title in 2012 was their first in 21 years. Weimer (97-158 at Kaneland) also listed beating Geneva for the first time in 19 seasons and producing several college players among the highlights of the program’s upswing. The Knights went 23-13 last season.

The often emotional coach said it was difficult to tell players of his decision.

“You know you’ve done a good job when those kids seem sad, they say thank you, they shake your hand – they were very receptive,” Weimer said.

“Some of them didn’t know and were shocked, some kind of knew what was going on and kind of prepared themselves a little, but they were sad. It’s not like I got run out.

Everyone’s on good terms. It just stinks, especially for the seniors. I think it’s tough for them.”

Hawks prospects embrace names of the game CHICAGO – Jake Chelios wears a famous name on the back of his sweater.

It’s one of many gifts that he inherited from his father, Chris, who had 948 points and 2,891 penalty minutes during a spectacular 26-season NHL career. On Tuesday, Chris Chelios was one of five people selected to join the Hockey Hall of Fame.

“Growing up here, I don’t think I realized how big of a name it was,” said Jake Chelios, a 22-year-old defenseman taking part in this week’s Blackhawks prospect camp.

“But then, coming back 10 years later, you realize that everybody knows the last name.”

Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

“It’s both,” Chelios said with a smile. “You never

Ah, yes. Opposing hockey teams. Now, we’re talking some great names.

The Hawks’ prospect camp is packed with players from almost every hockey background imaginable. Of the 25 forwards, 19 defensemen and seven goaltenders on the camp roster, more than a dozen college conferences and junior hockey leagues are represented.

Granted, no other prospect has a last name nearly as popular as Chelios. But check out some of the names that these guys have worn

on the front of their sweaters.

Milos Bubela played forward for the Dubuque Fighting Saints. Jason Bast did the same for the Victoria Salmon Kings. And history will look back fondly on Sam Babintsev’s days as a Mississauga Steelhead.

Not to provoke any Fighting Saints – who knew Benedict could box? – but defenseman Dillon Fournier probably deserves the top prize in the Weirdest Team Name category. Fournier, a promising 19-year-old who was the Hawks’ second-round selection in 2012, spent the 2010-11 campaign as a member of the Lewiston MAINEiacs.

You read that correctly.

in which they played.

It must have been kind of embarrassing to wear that sweater, yeah?

“Oh, no,” Fournier said.

“We liked it. The fans loved it. We just had a good laugh with it. It was fun.”

In fact, none of the Hawks prospects seemed to mind the goofy team names for which he played. Mark it down as reason No. 3,597 why hockey players are the most easy-going athletes.

Zach Loesch was a Fresno Monster before becoming a Pembroke Lumber King. Kent Simpson was an Everett Silvertip before becoming a Toledo Walleye and – you probably know this one – a Rockford IceHog. Alex Broadhurst once was a Green Bay Gambler.

Hey Alex, did you come

across a lot of gamblers in Green Bay? “I didn’t come across many gamblers, but I’m sure there are,” Broadhurst said with a laugh. “They’re always out there.”

True. Kind of like weird team names.

“I thought Youngstown Phantoms was pretty weird,” Broadhurst said. “They had purple jerseys.”

Sounds intimidating.

“No,” Broadhurst said.

“Their bus is just … purple.

It’s kind of funny.”

Tim O’Brien knows all about playing against the super-purple Phantoms. That name and several others were part of the charm of playing in the United States Hockey League.

Storen deserved a better fate than was he was dealt

By MIKE WISE The Washington Post Every time Drew Storen gives up more hits and runs than he’s supposed to, specialized pitching statistics are instantly crunched to show why his earned run average has doubled from last season or why he’s trying to paint corners instead of just dealing 90mph heat – as if mere numbers can ascertain the problem.

They can’t. Because Storen’s struggles really go back eight months, to Game 5 and all the baggage that came with it.

Oh, and it’s not his psychological inability to get over being one strike away, in 13 excruciating pitches, from putting Washington in the National League Championship Series.

No, it’s the Nationals’.

From Mike Rizzo to Davey Johnson to pitching coach Steve McCatty, they kept saying the right things to their 25-year-old closer that night he couldn’t finish off the Cardinals – that it wasn’t his fault, that he’d be back just like they’d be back to set things right.

Then they made it Drew Storen’s fault. They took his job away.

I know. It’s an old story.

Really, what does a rattled October closer being demoted to setup guy have to do with their inability now to make up real ground on the Braves and start acting like division champions and genuine pennant contenders?

Nothing – and everything.

The Nationals can intellectualize all they want about going out and getting the best-available closer needed to put them over the top in Rafael Soriano and how that investment has appeared to pay off.

But they can’t dismiss the notion that the most soul-crushing moment of a guy’s career never was allowed to become the fuel for Storen to develop into one of the league’s great closers – because he never got that chance.

Based solely on the acquisition of Soriano, he had every right to feel he lost his job because of blowing that save against the Cardinals. If you don’t think at least some of the team’s other relievers didn’t initially bristle at the acquisition of Soriano, you’re wrong;

It’s hard to blame him.

To a man, every Hawks prospect is thrilled to be able to wear the Indian Head logo

on his chest. There is no confusion as to what the Hawks represent: an Original Six franchise that has won two Stanley Cup titles in the past four seasons.

“It has such a big fan base,” Fournier said. “It has been around for so many years. It’s real cool to see how people react.

“Everyone knows the team. Everyone knows the logo. Everyone knows the name. It’s real special.”

Well said, Mr. MAINEiac.

they knew that could easily have been them.

Storen and the others are over it. They know it’s Mike Rizzo’s job to make the team better – [darn] anyone’s feelings. But people very high in the organization wonder privately how much effect not only that collapse had on Storen psychologically, but also how the pitcher would take management essentially saying, “Uh, Drew, you know how we said it wasn’t your fault that night. Well, it was.

And that’s why Rafael is here now.”

I don’t know if Storen would have become a lightsout closer this year. I don’t know if he would have the season Soriano is having, which has fluctuated between reliable and spectacular. I do know he never got that chance.

And while everyone in the dugout from Jayson Werth to Davey gets an opportunity at a do-over if they can get to October, Storen won’t get the chance to fix what he broke in Game 5. And I also know decisions made to severely alter what was already a more-than-respectable bullpen

before Soriano came aboard can have chemistry consequences that linger.

Dennis Eckersley gave up the most famous walk-off homer in baseball history to Kirk Gibson in the 1988 World Series. It ruined him so bad psychologically that he saved more than 300 games the rest of his career.

Brad Lidge gave up a walkoff homer in the 2005 World Series. He was on the mound for the Phillies when they won it all in 2008.

Is Storen, still just 25, going to have the career of Lidge or Eckersley? Who knows?

It’s too early to say. And who knows when Soriano is done here whether Storen gains the complete trust of the next manager. Heck, if he began flourishing again in the setup role, Storen could re-emerge as the team’s closer at, say, 27 – still a young age for that job, especially by Mariano Rivera standards. (Well, if his former roommate, Tyler Clippard, doesn’t beat him to the job.)

But when Davey calls Storen a “smart kid” that he thinks “would figure out” his problems on the mound last week – he ended up costing

the Nats’ seven hits and seven runs in two innings of work – it implies Storen has to get his head in the game.

When in reality a young right-hander with all the potential in the world, just a year and change removed from putting up a 43-save season, was toyed with mentally by his own club more than anything Storen did to cripple his confidence.

Even though some have blamed Davey for using Storen three consecutive days in October, including the night he came in with the Nationals down eight runs in Game 3 to make sure he got some work in, I think that’s useless. The manager had his best reliever on the mound with the season on the line. He believed in Storen enough to hand him the ball in that spot and it didn’t happen. Life goes on.

But I do blame everyone in the organization if they decided to use the worst night of a kid’s career as a referendum on his future as the team’s closer. Whether Soriano shuts the door in the ninth inning of a deciding playoff game or not, Drew Storen deserved better than that.

Jay-Z identifies as corporate entity

By CHRIS RICHARDS The Washington Post Eight summers ago, Jay-Z described his impossible journey from no-name to brand name in eight sly words: “I’m not a businessman/I’m a business, man.”

A triumphant little zinger, no doubt. But what about the rest of us?

When an artist self-identifies as a corporate entity, are we still Jay-Z fans? Or are we Jay-Z customers?

The answer to that late-capitalist riddle arrives with the rap icon’s insidious new album, “Magna Carta ... Holy Grail” – which first appeared last week as a data collection exercise disguised as a smartphone app capable of delivering a bundle of mediocre rap songs to your mobile device.

Here’s how it worked: Samsung purchased a million copies of “Magna Carta” in advance, then, via the app, made the album available to subscribers five days before its widespread release. In exchange, users were asked to share access to their social media accounts, their phone calls, their GPS location and more. If the medium is the message, we finally had an answer to that fanor-customer question.

And now who would want to be either? Throughout “Magna Carta,” the 43-year-old pretends he’s a threat to a system he’s so eagerly become a part of, as if his life as a champion capitalist is some perpetually escalating act of subversion. Hooray?

Rooting for this man in 2013 is like rooting for Pfizer. Or PepsiCo. Or PRISM. Plus, all of this Samsung hullabaloo has only distracted listeners from the fact that, musically and lyrically, “Magna Carta” is one of Jay-Z’s blandest offerings. Over 16 joylessly professional tracks, our hero laces up his sneakers for his bazillionthousandth victory lap around the hip-hop universe. There’s no mood, no verve, no vision to this music. It’s the sound of champagne being sprayed around an empty locker room.

And that’s disappointing considering the blitz of Web and

TV ads for “Magna Carta,” which suggested we’d be basking in a richly sculpted songbook. The first television spot crash-landed during Game 5 of the NBA Finals, with Jay jawing about his craft in the studio with the album’s producers, Timbaland, Pharrell Williams, Swizz Beatz and Rick Rubin – the last of whom wasn’t actually involved in the making of the album at all.

Also in the ad, the rapper promised to document the difficulty of maintaining his sense of self in the riptides of fame and fortune. But as ever, Jay-Z maintains Oz-like distance on this album, refusing to expose the personal vulnerabilities that Kanye West, Frank Ocean, Drake and a generation of hip-hop stars rising in his wake have built their careers on.

Instead, “Magna Carta” is packed with his patented American dreaming at its most unimaginative. He namedrops Jean-Michel Basquiat and Francis Bacon as if the only point of art is to own it. He name-drops convicted D.C. gangster Wayne

“Silk” Perry on a song named after fashion designer Tom Ford. And in a mysterious courtship ritual with Gen X, he recycles the hooks of R.E.M.’s “Losing My Religion” and Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

The last wheel falls off during the album’s final cut, “Nickels and Dimes.” After coughing up a weak Lady Gaga pun – “Taking food out my little monster’s mouth/That’ll drive me gaga” – and rekindling a weird media beef with 86-year-old Harry Belafonte, he closes the album by insulting the listeners who made him a superstar: “Y’all not worthy/ Sometimes I feel like y’all don’t deserve me.”

But that didn’t stop Jay-Z from reanimating his oft-dormant Twitter account Monday afternoon – where he answered questions and cracked jokes. It was as if he was trying to remind us that he was still human the only way he seems to know how: by shaking hands with his customers on the digital sales floor.

Sleep medications best used short-term Dear Doctor K: I can’t sleep.

Behavioral changes haven’t helped. Can you tell me about prescription medications for insomnia?

Dear Reader: I typically prescribe sleep medications only for short-term sleep problems.

Behavioral changes – such as going to bed and getting up at the same time each day, not reading or watching TV in bed, etc. – usually work if you keep at them.

Several categories of medications, which I discuss below, are used to treat insomnia. After taking any sleeping pill, allow for a full eight hours of sleep.

• Benzodiazepines calm brain activity. They are useful for patients with insomnia that results from anxiety. Different benzodiazepines vary in how quickly they act and how long they remain active in the body.

That’s important because people have different types of sleeping problems. Some people have trouble falling asleep: They need a fast-acting medicine.

Others fall asleep easily but find themselves waking in the middle of the night: They need a longeracting medicine.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff These drugs can cause nextday drowsiness and sedation.

They can also reduce how much deep sleep you get – and you need deep, restorative sleep. So benzodiazepines can help you sleep, but they don’t increase what I think of as the most important kind of sleep. Another problem with benzodiazepines is that they start to lose their effect over time.

• Nonbenzodiazepines act on sleep receptors in your brain.

They help you fall asleep more quickly, but they may not lengthen your total sleep time.

These drugs vary in how quickly they act and how long their effects last.

Earlier this year, the FDA warned that people who take zolpidem (Ambien) can wake up the next morning with drug levels high enough to impair their ability to drive and do other activities safely – even if they feel wide awake.

• Antidepressants can reduce

the time it takes to fall asleep and decrease nighttime awakenings.

The tricyclic antidepressants are particularly good for increasing the time in deep, restorative sleep. And they achieve this effect at very low doses – well below the doses used to treat depression. Antidepressants are safer for long-term use than benzodiazepines. Their effect on sleep quality varies. The tricyclics should be used with caution in people over age 50, however, as they can contribute to heart rhythm problems.

• Melatonin-receptor agonist.

Ramelteon (Rozerem) is the only drug in this category. It mimics the body’s naturally produced melatonin, a hormone that promotes sleep.

Before you try a prescription sleep medication, give behavioral changes another chance. They are often just as effective as medication and may have longerlasting benefits. This time, work with a sleep specialist trained in behavioral medicine.

Hunger pangs are your body’s way of telling you that it needs fuel. Teens experience hunger pangs frequently because their bodies are changing and maturing.

But just because it’s all right to snack doesn’t mean you should eat potato chips, French fries or other high-calorie junk foods. Instead, nibble on raw veggies, fresh fruit and low-fat cheese.

Wedding or not, teens should never suppress hunger pangs just because they are dieting. Regardless of the extra pounds you would like to shed, a pound a week weight loss is the max. Extra poundage took time to make a person miserable, and it will take time to fade away. On your sister’s wedding day, your weight loss should be 11 pounds, not 15.

It might be wise to lose those extra four pounds in a month, and if that’s your ideal weight, keep it that way with a healthy eating plan, proper rest and

Instead, abide by the restrictions and continue to be super good. When you find Dad in a good mood, discuss what must be done to remove yourself from some of the restrictions. I doubt if Dad will remove them all, but he may reward your good behavior with a bit more freedom.

Dean Martin said, “When your opponent’s sittin’ there holdin’ all the aces, there’s only one thing to do: kick over the table.”

I have never seen that at a bridge tournament – but perhaps it has happened.

It is generally considered that the opponents are not on your team. But many of them, especially when on defense, will throw tricks in your direction.

And there are also deals where you can force the opponents to help you.

South is in four hearts. How should he plan the play after West leads the spade king?

With the annoying mirror distribution in the minors, declarer has four potential losers: one heart, two diamonds and one club. It looks as though South must guess trumps. If so, what is the percentage play?

A priori, it is about 2 percent better to play for the drop.

However, given the known uneven spade split, the odds have changed, making a finesse through East the favorite.

Declarer, though, with reasonable minor-suit breaks, does not need to guess at all. He should win with dummy’s spade ace, ruff a spade in his hand, cash the club ace, play a club to dummy’s king, ruff another spade, lead a diamond to dummy’s ace, and ruff the last spade.

Then South, who still has A-9-8 opposite K-J-10 in trumps, exits with a club or a diamond.

The opponents take their three tricks, but at trick 11, they must help declarer. Whatever is led, South ruffs low in the next hand and does not have to guess who holds the heart queen.

Perhaps East and West would wonder if they should have upended the table near the end!

Festival to present ‘Joseph’ at Kaneland KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla MAPLE PARK – Ever since he was a student in junior high school, Cornelius Marr wanted to play the title character in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” But at 32 years old, the Sugar Grove man said he thought that chance had passed.

“I thought I was too old for the part,” Marr said.

Instead, he has that opportunity, along with a dream-come-true scenario in the Kaneland Community Fine Arts Festival’s presentation of the production. Marr will play the role of Joseph, and his entire family – his wife, Melanie, and children, Rohan, 8, and Lorelai, 4 – will be in the production as well.

“Being able to look across the stage and see my wife and kids is really cool,” he said. “I love the cast and getting to be a part of this whole thing.”

“Joseph” will be performed the next two weekends – Friday through Sunday and then July 19 to 21 – at Kaneland High School, 47W326 Keslinger Road, Maple Park. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and senior citizens. Family tickets are available for $25, admitting all family members living at a household for that price. Preschoolers are admitted free. Friday and Saturday shows start at 7 p.m., and Sunday shows start at 2

Marr is playing the title role in the summer production of the arts festival, which traditionally is a community theater experience that features those from local communities.

Marr has participated in

past performances at Kaneland and was part of last year’s production of “Cinderella.” He majored in theater at Elmhurst College and said he can’t count how many performances with which he’s been involved.

He now works as an art consultant in Oak Park, and he said he keeps his theater

involvement to summers because of family commitments, but it helps that the family is part of the experience this time.

Melanie Marr said it’s her first time performing in a show, and Rohan said it’s a lot of work.

The Marrs said those interested should go to the show because it’s family-friendly and features so many styles of music.

“It’s very entertaining,” Melanie Marr said.

The event’s executive director, Maria Dripps-Paulson, said in a recent news release that the community theater events are “a true example of community, uniting actors and musicians from various school districts and communities, all joining on the Kaneland Auditorium stage in our love of theater.” She said such events are particularly good for a community, and she said she experienced that by watching theater events while growing up.

“We would watch children become teens, directors become actors, musicians and crew return annually, and actors work on and offstage as we continued visiting the communities with theater,” she wrote. “I believe it was this ongoing changing of roles, loyalty of staff and collaborating teamwork that helped shape my idea of community.”
