The main building that hosted “The Hugging Saint” – or Amma, as she is known – was buzzing with activity, and the sound of

devotional singing filled the air.

I was allowed onto the stage where Amma was hugging her followers. Colin Taylor lifted his son, Malcolm, 7 months, into her

arms and she embraced him.

Amma visits this area each year, and I look forward to next year.

Cadence seeks state OK to buy out ProCure

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com WINFIELD – Less than three years since opening the region’s first proton therapy cancer treatment center, Cadence Health has asked state regulators for permission to buy out the company with which it had partnered to build and operate the treatment facility.

Late last month, Cadence – the parent company that operates both Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield and Delnor Hospital in Geneva – applied to the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board for permission to complete the $25 million buyout of the stake held

by ProCure in the CDH Proton Center in Warrenville.

The New York-based ProCure helped CDH develop the

Warrenville facility in 2010, and has helped operate the facility since. ProCure has developed and operates similar centers in Oklahoma, New Jersey and Washington state.

However, ProCure appears to have stumbled financially in recent months.

Michael Vivoda, Cadence’s president and CEO, told the Illinois Health Facilities board in a letter dated July 3 that ProCure is “currently in the process of a financial restructuring,” which has prompted the agreement between Cadence and ProCure.

“The proposed change of ownership, in light of this uncertainty, will [ensure] that the proton therapy center, and the services that are provided in that facility, will remain accessible to the patients and

communities it serves without the potential of interruption,” Vivoda said in the letter.

When the facility opened in 2010, representatives of CDH, which later would merge with Delnor to form Cadence, trumpeted the potential of the proton center, saying the center would serve as a “destination” for many seeking cancer treatment.

They noted the therapy’s promise to more precisely treat certain kinds of cancers and tumors than traditional radiation therapy, resulting in less damage to surrounding healthy tissue.

The CDH Proton Center remains the only such proton therapy centers in Illinois.

According to a purchase agreement, dated June 26 and filed with the state board, Ca-

dence also notes that it also will release ProCure and its affiliated entities from paying back $40 million CDH loaned to ProCure in 2009 to help finance construction of the proton center.

11 ducklings saved from storm drain in S. Elgin

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com Police officers in St. Charles and Campton Hills completed their twoweek traffic safety enforcement campaign, which ran through the Fourth of July weekend and concluded Sunday.

In St. Charles, police arrested six people for driving under the influence and made two felony arrests, according to a news release.

They also issued four citations to uninsured drivers, seven citations for speeding and 11 citations for other violations. In addition to the citations, St. Charles police also issued 23 warnings for various violations.

nweskerna@shawmedia.com SOUTH ELGIN – Steve Super said employees of the South Elgin Public Works Department usually encounter debris when they clear the city’s storm drains.

But Wednesday morning, one village worker helped rescue 11 ducklings from a storm sewer on Waterside Drive in South Elgin.

“We are fishing stuff out of the storm sewer system occasionally,” said Super, director of South Elgin Public Works. “But most of the time it’s debris ... not actual ducks.”

The ducklings were rescued with the help of village worker Craig Petschow and a pair of observant South Elgin residents.

Steve and Dixie Thompson said they looked out their window around 6 a.m.

Wednesday and noticed a duck circling the street near a storm drain grate in front of their home.

When they went outside to see what was in the drain, they saw almost a dozen ducklings trapped in the storm drain.

They decided to call the police department’s nonemergency number to report it and then were directed to call public works.

Petschow arrived to inspect the drain.

“He could see about six feet down and counted 11 ducklings,” Steve Thompson said. “For all I know, they were in there all night.”

Steve Thompson said Petschow didn’t have the equipment he needed to rescue them, so he went home and returned with a net. He said Petschow then scooped them up and put them in a laundry basket.

Thompson said the mother duck must have walked over the storm grate, and all of her ducklings followed suit.

Thompson said the mother duck stayed nearby during the rescue.

Safety campaign nets several arrests they issued an additional 27 citations during the safety campaign. Police put extra emphasis on their late-night patrols because statistics show that’s when the highest number of impaired drivers are on the road and the fewest buckle up, the news release states.

The two departments participated in a statewide effort to reduce the number of drunken drivers and encourage drivers to wear their seat belts.

The campaigns are Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over and Click It or Ticket.

The Illinois Department of Transportation awarded grants through its Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program, allowing police departments to step up enforcement during the holiday weekend.

Hundreds of cars coming to Mooseheart on Saturday KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com MOOSEHEART – Hundreds of cars, motorcycles and trucks of all kinds will be on the campus of Mooseheart Child City & School on Saturday for what could be the largest car show in the history of the campus.

The St. Charles Corvette Club will host the show – which is free to the public – from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Mooseheart, which is at Mooseheart Road and Route 31, between Batavia and North Aurora.

The event will be in honor of both the 100th anniversary of St. Charles Lodge 1368 and the July 27 celebration of the 100th anniversary of Mooseheart.

All proceeds from the event will support the ongoing $10 million Mooseheart School Renovation Project.

“We’re doing as much as we possibly can for this effort,” show coordinator Dominic Fracasso said. “It’s a wonderful cause.”

Like many of the St. Charles Corvette Club members, Fracasso is a Moose member, so

“We switched our meeting place to the St. Charles Moose Lodge last year, and they were nice enough to let us meet there once a month for no charge,” Fracasso said. “Since then, we’ve been learning about the Moose, and every year we want to do something to give back.”

If the weather is good, it could break the 205-vehicle record for the largest show in

Mooseheart’s history.

“Everyone is so energized,” Fracasso said. “I’m targeting 250 for a first-year car show of this nature.”

All cars, trucks and motorcycles are eligible for this show. Classic, rebuilt, stock and original vehicles are all eligible for entry.

The registration fee is $20 per vehicle, of which 100 percent goes to Mooseheart. Registration is from 9 a.m. to noon.

Awards will be announced at 3 p.m.

STC teen attends Birch Creek music program in Wisconsin gent audition process, musicians are able to attend the program and work to develop their technical skills. She said about 200 students are on campus throughout the summer, and about 100 faculty members teach.

Hughes said they practiced eight hours a day, sometimes more. She said she liked being immersed in an atmosphere surrounded by professional musicians and said teachers touched on musical structure, composition, ear training and site reading.

She said if she has the chance, she would participate in the program next year.

“My brain was stretched,” Hughes said. “They did a really good job of not stressing everyone out, but they did push it to the limit and challenge you.”

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles resident Abigail Hughes said she’s loved the sound of the harp since she was a little girl.

She got a chance to start playing the instrument about five years ago after finding a trade-in program that allowed her to try it for six months before buying it.

“I started taking lessons and I loved it,” she said. “I didn’t want to stop. I just continued with it.”

Hughes, 18, was selected as one of 51 young musicians across the country to participate in the symphony session at Birch Creek Music Performance Center in Door County, Wis., a highly selective program geared toward young musicians.

The two-week program concluded Saturday, and Hughes said it was a “wonderful experience.”

“It was fun experimenting with sounds,” she said.

“When you think of the harp, you think of flowery music.

But it can do so much more.”

Hughes, who was homeschooled, said she just finished her senior year and plans to take a short break before starting her college search. But when she attends college, she said there’s no doubt she’ll be studying the harp.

Cathy Knipfer, director of marketing and public relations for Birch Creek, said the two-week music program typically recruits young musicians between the ages of 13 and 19.

Bob was born Feb. 23, 1934, in St. Charles, and graduated from St. Charles High School (Class of 1952). After high school, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy.

After growing up and spending his entire working life in the Chicago area, he retired 14 years ago to South Padre Island. Through the years, he worked for St. Charles Kitchens, Leath Furniture, Johnson Products and Pfund and Clint. While family members thought that he would never retire, he flourished living on “The Island.” He loved the warm weather, beach, partying with the locals and the winter Texans, visiting Mexico and volunteering at the birding center.

He frequently traveled to visit family and friends, and over the years, he experienced all seven continents. His faithful pug friend, Marcus, was often his travel partner. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. All will remember him as an energetic, optimistic, kind and generous man who was accepting of others and a self-professed chocoholic.

He is survived by his siblings, Phyllis (DeReadt) and Richard; his three children, Blair, Douglas and Beth (Erickson); seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

In addition to her parents, Tindy was preceded in death by an infant brother, John Meyers; and one stepdaughter, Deborah Terlep.

She is survived by her husband, Donald Cunningham of Hernando, Fla.; one daughter, Kathleen Lawrence of Elburn; two stepdaughters, Sandra Oury of Wheaton and Susan Anderson of Elgin; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Private cremation was performed under the direction of Brown Funeral Home and Crematory in Lecanto, Fla., and a service was held at the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Citrus Springs last March.

A private interment ceremony will be held at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Ill. A memorial will be at 11:30 a.m.

The legal age to drink in Illinois is 21.

In filing charges to all three establishments’ liquor license holders, Police Chief Stephen Mexin recommended their licenses be suspended or revoked.

City Attorney Charles Radovich said officials will make the stipulations public at a hearing that has not yet been scheduled.

“Monday at 1:30 p.m. is the deadline for people to make the decision,” Radovich said.

“Historically, liquor license holders have indicated they acknowledge the mistake that was made, and the liquor commissioner rendered an order – whatever fine or suspension.”

Although they are all entitled to a hearing where proof is established, Radovich said two have agreed, and officials are waiting for the third licensee to decide.

ComEd seeks input on route of high-voltage lines in Kane

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com By 2017, ComEd hopes to string about 60 miles of new high-voltage power lines from central Kane County to near Byron.

But now, the electric utility says it still is seeking public input on where exactly those new power lines should go in the region.

Later this year, ComEd said it expects to seek state permission for the so-called Grand Prairie Gateway Project. The effort would seek to run high-voltage transmission lines between its substation near Wayne and a substation in Ogle County, near Byron.

Richard Mathias, a senior consultant with PJM Interconnection, a company that manages the electric grid owned

by ComEd in northern Illinois, said the new transmission lines are needed to make the regional electric grid more efficient and to reduce “congestion” on the local grid that is

expected to worsen “substantially” in the next two to four years.

Mathias said PJM identified the need for congestion relief in recent years, and specifically brought the need for the new Wayne-to-Byron lines to ComEd’s attention last year.

Currently, there are no transmission lines running directly between the substations. Lines from the Byron substation interconnect with lines to the Quad Cities, Dixon and Rockford. And lines from the Wayne substation run to the Chicago area, ComEd said.

ComEd spokesman David O’Dowd said his company agrees with the need for the project. But he said ComEd has yet to select a route for the new lines.

He said an initial route selection will be presented publicly in August.

The route will be laid somewhere within a 700-squaremile study area. In Kane County, that study area includes northern portions of

St. Charles, Campton and Virgil townships, as well as all of Elgin, Plato and Burlington townships, and portions of Hampshire, Rutland and Dundee townships.

O’Dowd said portions of the new transmission line route could run along existing power line routes within that area.

For now, ComEd is meeting with local government officials and local residents at various “open house” sessions.

This week, ComEd met with members of the public during sessions in South Elgin, Sycamore and Ogle County.

More open houses will be scheduled in mid-August on the project, ComEd said.

Kane County officials said they have not been informed on the project beyond what they learned during open house meetings this month.

They said the county will withhold comment on ComEd’s proposal until the utility presents route proposals for the new transmission lines.

If the third licensee stipulates, Radovich said a noncontested hearing will be scheduled with a presentation of the stipulations, with fines and judgments against the licenses – suspensions or revocations – in public.

Sergio De Los Santos said he was one of the licensees that was going to stipulate, but he referred all questions to his wife Lindsey. She did not return a voice mail message.

Anastasio said he expects to come to an agreement with the city, although nothing has been finalized.

“We would like to absolve things amicably with the city. Our inclination is to stipulate,” Anastasio said.

“Frankly, I don’t know the facts because I was not there and the bartender does not remember the transaction. We have complete respect for the police. We think they are hon-

est and have done their job. It is not worth our time to contest it. This was human error by one of our employees, and he feels terrible about it.”

Anastasio said Fiora’s does not tend to attract young drinkers, “so we are not accustomed to having this problem.”

Knuth said he could not comment.

The citations were the first for Sergio’s and Fiora’s, but the second for EvenFlow in seven months.

On Nov. 17, 2012, Knuth and his partner, Mercadante, were cited for serving alcohol at 4 a.m. in violation of the city’s code.

The liquor code does not allow alcoholic beverages to be served between 2 and 6 a.m. on the licensed premises any day of the week.

They were fined $1,000, and the license was suspended for one day.

GENEVA – The three businesses cited for serving underage people during the Swedish Days liquor compliance checks are expected to go to a stipulated agreement before the 1:30 p.m. Monday deadline, Geneva officials said.

Mayor Kevin Burns, who serves as the city’s liquor commissioner, said in a text he did not expect to hold a hearing at all.

“We hope to have all stipulations signed and sealed by [this] afternoon – Monday morning at the latest,” Burns said Thursday in a text. “Stipulations are always posited to the defendants, and they determine themselves whether to accept, negotiate or request a full hearing.”

The three liquor license holders cited are Michael

Knuth and Nicholas Mercadante of EvenFlow Music and Spirits, 302 W. State St.; Sergio and Lindsey De Los Santos of Sergio’s Mexican Cantina, 30 W. State St.; and Michael and Ann Anastasio of Fiora’s Restaurant, 317 S. Third St. The three businesses were part of a June 21 liquor compliance check during the annual Swedish Days Festival, in which police checked 16 establishments and beer gardens using underage people as their agents who use their true IDs to see whether they will be refused or get served.

Police used Carolyn Thompson and Nicholas Devor – identified in the charges filed against all three establishments – as those who participated in the compliance checks.

Thompson and Devor both are 19, police said.

STC library to be tuned in to ‘Jeopardy’

alagattolla@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A few months have passed since Deborah Stowell taped her appearance on the TV game show “Jeopardy!” and she said she will watch the actual broadcast Monday afternoon, in part, to merely recall the experience.

“There’s a part of me that is saying, ‘Did this really happen?’ ” Stowell said. “It will be good to see it on Monday.”

Stowell, 43, is a St. Charles resident and a staffer at the St. Charles Public Library. She said she has watched the show on and off for a few decades.

She said she was motivated to fill out the online test for the show when she considered going to graduate school.

“I thought, ‘Oh, that would be a good way to pay for grad school,’ ” she said, and so she started the process in January 2012. She received a call from the show in March 2012,

“Jeopardy!” is known for its format of listing answers in categories, which have varying totals a contestant can win. Contestants must answer in the form of a question. However, contestants are at risk every time they buzz in because an incorrect response will lead to a deduction of points.

In an email, Pam Salomone, the library’s communications and marketing manager, wrote that staff members “are excited to watch the show, to cheer and to celebrate our co-worker’s accomplishment.”

She said they will serve popcorn, snacks and soft

drinks.

“We are very excited and proud of Deborah for her accomplishments,” Salomone wrote. “It is very impressive to be selected as a contestant on ‘Jeopardy.’ ” The library’s circulation manager, Bonnie Ellis, said in the release that library officials are “very proud of her making it to the contestant round on ‘Jeopardy.’ ” “And we’re not surprised that she was able to do so,” Ellis added.

Stowell said she is not certain whether she will watch at the library or at a gathering with her family members. She’s excited to have the chance.

She said it’s an accomplishment even to make it on the show, and encourages anyone interested to go ahead and take the online test, which she said was “pretty painless.”

“You don’t have anything to lose, and it’s fun,” she said.

The work will be performed during July and August. During this evaluation process, each pole will be visually inspected and then sounded to check for deterioration, according to a city news release.

Windmill City Fest time arrives Batavia event will kick off today; weather may attract bigger crowds

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Windmill City Festival organizers are hoping for big crowds at this weekend’s festival after last summer’s sweltering weather took a toll on attendance.

“This year, the weather looks pitch perfect with temperatures in the 80s,” said Kari Miller, the Batavia Park District’s marketing and public relations director.

The festival kicks off today and runs through Sunday.

Activities are centered on the Batavia Riverwalk at Houston Street and Island Avenue in downtown Batavia. The Windmill City Festival is organized by the Batavia Park District, Batavia Chamber of Commerce and the city of Batavia.

The festival normally attracts between 9,000 and 10,000 people. Last summer’s lessthan-ideal conditions shrunk attendance to an estimated 7,500 to 8,000 people.

“Hopefully we will get pretty high attendance this year,” Miller said.

“It will be easier on the pets,” Foltos said.

Anderson Animal Shelter in South Elgin will have animals to adopt at the event and will help judge the pet parade.

Foltos also will be the master of ceremonies for the ice cream eating contest at 2 p.m.

Sunday, which will feature a 100-foot gutter filled with hundreds of scoops of ice cream.

The contest is sponsored by Foltos Tonsorial Parlor and the Batavia Creamery.

Other activities include a wiffle ball home run derby at 1 p.m. Saturday, a diaper derby at 3 p.m. Saturday and the Batavia Park Foundation’s annual bags tournament at 6 p.m.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR A valid debate about the issues

To the Editor: The recent letters to the editor “God made all of us” (Kane County Chronicle, June 26, 2013) and “Approach topic objectively” (Chronicle, July 3, 2013) illustrate the biggest divide I believe our country is facing, which are those who believe that Christians should “be quiet” and tend to their beliefs in privacy and those who believe that Christians have a duty and a right to have their voices be heard in the public square.

The issue that concerns me the most is that those who want to dispel Christian values in regards to government legislation will prevent some Christians from expressing their values for fear of being called a bigot, or being perceived as “not with it,” or as a radical. My hope for the future of our nation and that of future generations is that both sides can treat their differences with charity and objectivity.

I believe this first step can bring forth a valid debate about the issues, which can provide an understanding for both sides and to reach a decision that is best for the common good. I believe our nation and its Constitution deserve a better example in conducting civil discourse in matters of opinion, belief and truth, especially in light of the recent Fourth of July holiday.

Time to change Electronics Communications Privacy Act THE WASHINGTON POST Ever since former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden dropped a slew of classified documents into the public’s view, the country has re-engaged in a vigorous debate about some – but not all – of the authorities the U.S. government cites to allow eavesdropping on electronic communications.

But there is at least one loophole written into law that makes Americans vulnerable to unnecessary intrusions, and it is much more unsettling than a lot of the Snowden material and isn’t getting much attention.

Although the PRISM and phone metadata programs that Snowden detailed were secret, at least a court must scrutinize them.

A section of law that hasn’t come up for discussion in the past few weeks, on the other hand, is arguably less protective, giving law enforcement at all levels relatively unfettered access to stored email, documents in the “cloud” and other personal material.

The reason is that law, the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, is old, and technology has far surpassed the vision of the lawmakers who wrote and passed it in 1986.

Almost no one used email then; the online cloud didn’t really exist; and storing personal information for long periods of time with a third party such as Google didn’t seem to make any sense.

So, the law says, if users keep email on a third-party server for more than 180 days, they’ve abandoned the material and law enforcement can look at it – armed merely with a subpoena, not a warrant from a judge.

hard drives owned by communications companies and located far away from their homes.

It’s not just metadata that’s vulnerable here – it’s the full contents of every stored email and every cloud-based document. Journalists, among many others, use these tools, which is why the Newspaper Association of America – to which The Washington Post belongs – is part of the Digital Due Process Coalition, a group lobbying to change the law.

For years, Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., chairman of the Judiciary Committee, has been trying to do that.

Although his updates would

keep multiple exceptions for law enforcement, his reforms would at least require government investigators to obtain a search warrant when they want to obtain email content of any vintage from third-party companies.

This would not only meet Americans’ legitimate expectations of privacy, but it would also moot the legally murky question of whether searches conducted under the old law are constitutional.

Unlike some of the tougher issues the country is confronting after the NSA leaks, this one is easy. Congress should finally act on Leahy’s bill, and soon.

Area golfers feel sting of missing cut at familiar Mill Creek

By VINNIE DUBER editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – It could be argued that the Tri-Cities golfers competing in this week’s IJGA-CDGA Junior Amateur at Mill Creek Golf Club had a distinct advantage: familiarity with a local course.

But the edge of playing in Geneva didn’t prove to be helpful at all when it came to the scores posted in the tournament’s second day Thursday, as no area golfers made the cut for today’s final round.

Some of that can be chalked up to the fact that these golfers are familiar with just how hazardous a course this is, too.

“The conditions were nice, but the course was playing a

little tricky today,” Batavia sophomore Nicholas Robinson said. “There’s a lot of water out there. And if you lose a lot of balls in the hazards and out of bounds it gets kind of tough. I thought it was nice. I like the course, I like the environment, I like how the IJGA does this with Mill Creek, and I like the competition.”

The sizable contingent of Geneva golfers are especially knowledgeable when it comes to Mill Creek, a course that serves as their home base during the high school season.

In fact, more than one said they live right nearby or even on the golf course. But that didn’t necessarily help with their scores Thursday.

“It probably makes it harder because I expect to do good

and sometimes I don’t,” Geneva junior Matthew Fisher said.

Still, the Vikings golfers enjoyed being around each other – many will be teammates when the season starts – and they’re looking forward to what they say will be a promising year.

“I think we’re going to be pretty good,” senior Danny Cisco said. “We’ve got four returning seniors, and we were all top six last year. So I think we could be contending at state.”

While the Vikings are looking ahead to the upcoming season, some of the local golfers were looking several seasons into the future.

Riva instantly took on the task of mentoring the younger golfer, instructing him on the mental side of the game and giving pointers as their round progressed.

“It was fun. I tried to mentor him a little bit,” Riva said.

“He’s got to play a little smarter on some holes, but we had a lot of fun out there.”

“It was great,” Sandlund said. “I actually did play a lot better on some holes because of his mentoring. I thought it was pretty fun once I got it going.”

Riva seems to enjoy being a teacher, all part of continuing the tradition of Saints golf.

St. Charles runner Steve Spear has accumulated many things on his cross-country journey from Los Angeles to New York City.

He’ll trade wear on his shoes and 49-year-old body for the time of church leaders and onlookers.

Spear isn’t averaging a marathon a day for kicks; he’s trying to raise $1.5 million to provide clean water to a Kenyan village. As his trek nears its midway point, Dick Pond Athletics wants to provide hometown support in return.

Dick Pond officials are planning a rally at 11 a.m.

July 20 for Spear at the store on 303 N. 2nd St. Three hours earlier, they’ll bus what they hope is a horde of athletes to run 15 miles with Spear into downtown St. Charles. Seven- and three-mile drop points also are planned.

“This way everybody of every kind of level could get a feel for what it’s like to run with a guy who’s running across the country,” store manager Glen Kamps said.

A former minister at Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington, Spear launched his Running for Water campaign to promote awareness for clean water scarcity in Africa. He was especially stirred by the welfare of the people of Bartabwa, Kenya, after his meeting with a 7-year-old girl named Winnie.

He began his run on April 8, leaving from the Santa Monica (Calif.) Pier and proceeding onward to Los Angeles.

Spear has been a Dick Pond customer since breaking into running a few years ago. Although he might not be as seasoned as some of his fellow regulars, his dedication has gone unquestioned.

Moving along with the impending midwest heat wave, he completed separate 35-milers in 100-plus degree temperatures this week.

Spear arrived in Oklahoma City in early June, days after a series of tornadoes ravaged the region.

The rally is expected to end at 2 p.m., giving Spear time to prepare for a weekend of speaking engagements at Willow Creek.

He’ll resume his journey July 23.

“The cool thing to me is he’s a runner. He lives in St. Charles, Ill., of all places, and his journey has taken him down the main street of our town,” Kamps said. “We just wanted to pull him over, shake his hand and let him know that we’re with him.”

Anthony’s ace Anthony Sperando’s recreational round with fellow 2012 Kaneland graduates Drew Peters and Thanasi Pesmajoglu last month took a spirited turn as the threesome approached the pin of the sixth hole at Bliss Creek.

That’s when the group discovered Sperando wasn’t just spot-on with his 7-iron on the par-3, 151-yard hole.

He was an ace among the rest of the golfers on the Sugar Grove course.

Sperando shouted in jubilation after peering into the cup to realize he had notched a hole-in-one, but later turned more tender when addressing the feat.

The 18-year-old Bradley sophomore couldn’t help crediting and saluting grandfather Richard Sendarak, 84, who still is after his first ace.

“He’s been playing for almost all of his life and he’s never had one, so that makes it kind of special that I was able to get it at such a young age,” Sperando said. “He’s taught me a lot about the game, so it’s pretty special to be able to tell him that I got a holein-one.”

Feddern, Mill Creek buzzing

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Mill Creek director of golf Steve Feddern allows his 6-yearold black lab, Natalie, to roam about the clubhouse each day.

There’s a water bowl for her in the pro shop, but the dog – named for LPGA Tour member Natalie Gulbis – often can be spotted elsewhere.

Similarly, Feddern moved around in addressing numerous topics during my visit to the course Thursday morning. Here’s a look at some highlights in an edited transcript:

Participation in the junior league here has exploded. How did it take off?

When I got here, and I’m going into my fourth full year, there were 50 kids.

It was kind of disorganized. ... When I came aboard and with the help of [Batavia-based pro] Rich [Flores], we kind of had a totally different approach. We said, well, if we’ve got this great practice facility, if we’ve got the nine-hole short course across the street – we call it Little Big Creek – and our job is to grow the game. ... We have a slew, an awesome team of volunteers, and it’s from Geneva High School girls, Batavia boys, all these high school kids come out and help volunteer. And then the next thing you know, we can handle 200 kids, and then it goes to 250 and now it’s over 300. It’s insane.

It’s got to be uplifting to see Rich Flores [a cancer survivor] back in these parts.

He’s technically not a Mill Creek

employee. He teaches on his own kind of thing, but he’s an absolutely integral part of the team here. ... Slowly last year he returned, this year it’s fulltime. I’ve been his best friend since I was a kid, so it’s all meant a lot to me.

Do you sense there might ever be a jump in fall prep golf participation considering all the new concussion legislation with football?

is gone?’ Just drop one, hit it and go on. You know what I mean? You’re going to enjoy yourself more, and then you’re helping the pace of play. You’re not making it worse. So if people can attack it with that mindset, we don’t get as many complaints and can get more golfers through that will enjoy the game more.

What’s the status quo for pace of play?

I never really thought about it in a concussion football sense, but that’s interesting. ... It’s a lifetime sport of whether you make it to the [PGA] Steve Feddern Tour or whether you want to do it for business or whether you want to do it once a month after you have kids just to get out of the house. Whatever. There’s so many different avenues, and you can literally play it your whole life. ... There’s that stigma that it’s boring and it’s slow and all that kind of stuff, but I think we’re kind of trying to break the walls down.

I’m OK with 4½ [hours for a foursome for 18 holes]. I get it. Fifteen minutes a hole – I think it should be 14, but whatever. Fifteen minutes is fine. But that would put you at 4½ hours, and that includes the drives in between the holes and all that stuff.

You’ve talked about efforts to speed up the pace of play. What’s going on there?

I get to play sometimes. I try to sneak out and play a little bit on Tuesday mornings, and Natalie, she runs all 18 holes and it’s fun. Other than that, we’re too busy right now. You don’t get into the golf business to play golf. I’ll just leave it at that.

What we’re doing as a golf course is just making people aware that it’s everybody’s responsibility ... we’re making fun signs and giving feedback with the rangers, setting the course to play a little faster. ... But also, if everybody would take it upon themselves to literally think, ‘What am I doing right now? Why am I taking 10 minutes to look for a ball that I know

How do people take to Natalie?

She’s the course dog. She’s our goose chaser and all that. She comes here every day and chases the geese and the kids love her. She’s kind of part of the team, too. Everybody that comes here, literally when they open the door and they’re like, ‘Where’s Natalie?’ ... She’s like a fixture here.

It’s funny.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – For the second straight night, the Cougars scored first only to watch the South Bend Silver Hawks cruise to a victory.

This one came 6-1 on Thursday night at Coveleski Regional Stadium.

Albert Almora doubled with two away and scored on a single to center off the bat of Dan Vogelbach to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the third.

The Cougars (34-51 overall, 4-15 second half) and Silver Hawks play the finale of their three-game set at 6:35 p.m. today.

Is NIU playing around with football schedule?

After hearing the rumor, three good sources confirmed it. Then, it’s no longer a rumor.

So maybe you, too, have heard the exciting news.

Hear me out. It hurts just to type this. But something needs to be said.

Under-scheduled?

Over-scheduled? Who’s minding the Northern Illinois football scheduling, recent past or present?

Earlier this summer, Idaho begged off the 2014 Huskie home football slate due to its new Sun Belt Conference commitments and moved the game to 2018. Okay, in this day and age, stuff happens – contracts or no contracts.

Replacing the Vandals next fall?

Envelope, please (hold the applause): Presbyterian College.

I kid you not. Holy non-opposition, Batman.

No offense intended to the NCAA FCS-level, Big South Conference Blue Hose (2-9 record in 2012, by way), but you think TicketMaster or the NIU ticket office can handle the demand for Presbyterian from the general public? Coupled with the unimpressive, five-game Huskie Stadium 2013 schedule, this is more sad news for a program coming off an unprecedented 12-2 Orange Bowl campaign, second straight Mid-American Conference championship, Top 25, etc.

What’s the saying, perception is reality?

Wait until ESPN, Sports Illustrated, USA Today all see Presbyterian on the NIU schedule.

Hold onto your rotten tomatoes for the next few paragraphs.

In hindsight, this might have been what ESPN talking head Kirk Herbstreit meant, but never articulated on the “Bowl Selection Show” in December. To him and his snob buddies, Northern Illinois was “a joke.” Forget that the Huskies accomplished everything the BCS oversight system required.

Unprofessional and unprepared, Herbstreit offered no facts to substantiate his position. Not paying attention in high school speech class again, ah, Kirk?

A quick call to ESPN colleague and NFL draft expert Mel Kiper that afternoon prior to the show might have pointed to one disparity – pro prospect talent (Florida State led the nation with 11 NFL draft picks this April and had three NFL free agent signees while Northern Illinois had six NFL free agents this spring).

Then comes the obvious, in the last two “Phil Steele’s College Football Preview” magazines, the Huskies’ 2012 and 2013 schedules were ranked No. 122 and No. 124, respectively, in the FBS ranks. Not good. And Steele is one of the most accurate grid prognosticators in the business. He does his research and then some.

When you read about senior Heisman Trophy candidate Jordan Lynch, what’s the fly-in-the-ointment comment in most of the preseason stories? His prolific total offense statistics and the fact that eight of his games

VIEWS Mike Korcek come against the MAC. What “legitimized” Garrett Wolfe in 2005-06? Many things, but his productive games at Michigan and Ohio State didn’t hurt.

One can only hope that upgrading NIU’s football schedule – especially at home – is a priority for the next AD and his staff.

Yes, the Huskies have the Soldier Field marquee games, too. Give the Huskies credit, they are one of a handful of MAC institutions that can swing such a date in an NFL venue and net a seven-figure profit – a financial windfall for a mid-major that could not happen in six or seven games in DeKalb. Still, the Soldier Field tickets are overpriced for many and where are all our 225,000 Northern Illinois alums?

If I were athletics director – and as crazy as that sounds – I would’ve called Purdue the day after the Orange Bowl and offered the Boilermakers $400,000 to change the site of the 2013 football game from West Lafayette to DeKalb for a sixth home date. Reward the program, the community, the businesses, the student-athletes, the students (can you say activity fees?), the fans, the alums.

Bring a Big Ten Conference program into Huskie Stadium for the first time. Hasn’t Northern Illinois been a Division I grid program for 44 years? Considering some

of the NIU athletics administrative salaries I read, could “we” be more entrepreneurial?

It seems every time I look, a Big Ten or BCS team is playing at another MAC stadium (Michigan State at Western Michigan in 2015 and MSU at Eastern Michigan in 2018 or 2020, Missouri at Toledo in 2014, Miami (Fla.) and Iowa State at Toledo in 2015). The last five years in DeKalb, it’s been an uninspiring vanilla diet of Indiana State (2008), North Dakota (2010), Cal Poly (2012), Tennessee-Martin (2012) and our Mid-Am foes. Those opponents will really help market Northern Illinois season tickets, gain more media coverage and attract four-star recruits.

Wise guy? No, I’m only an NIU grad with a little Cardinal and Black pride who wants to witness his alma mater ascend to that next level.

How can any long-suffering fan forget the Maryland-Northern Illinois classic (2003)? Find an aerial shot of Huskie Stadium that night.

From that angle, the stadium aisles in both grandstands are virtually indiscernible because people were sitting in them, plus standing 3-4 deep on the platform at the top of the East stands from end zone to end zone. Despite turning away 500 fans prior to the game, the “Dog House” probably was at 110-115 percent capacity.

After a wonderful decade of Huskie gridiron success, how could there be 5,000plus empty seats for Big 12

Conference opponent Kansas last fall? How? Jayhawk fans were wondering the same thing if you noticed.

Look back at the 1986 Northern Illinois schedule – the first year in our second tenure as a “major independent.” Then-AD Bob Brigham might have gotten a little too aggressive with road games at West Virginia, Wisconsin, No. 21 Iowa and No. 1 Miami (Fla.) at the old Orange Bowl. For the first time in my career, I looked at our football student-athletes as student-mercenaries.

Needless to say, the Huskies finished 2-9. Which might have been the opposite scheduling extreme from the last five years.

Bottom line, if Northern Illinois truly desires to be the next Boise State, then improve the schedule from the 120s to the 70s, continue to work with the Big Ten, host in Soldier Field once every 3 to 4 years, play a minimum of six DeKalb dates and schedule strategically.

If NIU must play an FCS at home, sign up Illinois State or Southern Illinois.

Those storied, old IIAC rivalries would probably sell 1,500-2,500 opposition tickets.

The idea is to fill Huskie Stadium.

But not Presbyterian, sorry.

Fiat makes another addition to 500 lineup Fiat sells one car in the United States and that is the front-wheel-drive 500 model. It seems like there are more, but that is due to the variations of the 500. There are five and all are powered by a 1.4-liter, inline four-cylinder engine. Three (Pop, Sport, Lounge) rely on a 101-horsepower engine. Another (Abarth) has a 160-horsepower engine. The last variation to reach the U.S. is the 135-horsepower “t” or turbo.

The turbo is the latest variation but shares looks and interior layouts of the other 500s.

Like the engines prior to it, the Turbo’s is mated to a five-speed manual transmission. A six-speed automatic is optional on the other variations but not on the Turbo.

Sprightly on the road, the Turbo is not the Abarth, which is a sports nut’s delight on the road. The Turbo is OK but nothing special. Even so, with two adults aboard the Turbo darted in and out of traffic effortlessly on interstates and four-lane state roadways. Shifts are short and slick, the steering is tight and the rubber sticks to the cement. At a weight of 2,477 pounds, this subcompact has been tested racing from 0 to 60 miles per hour in slightly more than eight seconds, which is two to three seconds better than a 101-horsepower 500, but a second slower than the Abarth (7.1 seconds).

During the test week, in mixed city and highway driving, the Turbo averaged 30.3 miles per gallon of gasoline. The Environmental Protection Agency rates the car at 28 mpg city and 34 highway. Unleaded premium fuel is recommended for all Fiat 500s, which have a 10.5 gallon tank onboard.

Fiats are small, colorful and economical, and the Turbo is no exception. This subcompact car is designed for city use.

The Fiat is small and seating comforts are not designed for long, cross-country North American trips. For average adults (in the 6-foot range or less), leg and body room is fine in front. In the back seat, legroom is at a minimum (well, virtually nonexistent) and the ride can be uncomfortable.

Ideal in congested areas, the Fiat maneuvers well in narrow city streets and slips right into tight parking spots. With 15-, 16- or optional 17-inch tires, the Fiat can make a U-turn in 30.6 feet. Steering is taut, the suspension is above the norm and insulation factors are good. Not perfect, but good. Occupants will hear engine and road noise.

Fiat offers seven exterior colors on the 500 turbo model. They are black, beige, gray, red, blue, maroon and red. On the inside, trim comes in red or black leather or black and gray cloth.

BEHIND THE WHEEL Jerry Kuyper two rows for seating, the rear seat has shortcomings. Due to lack of leg room, volunteers will be few for that back seat. It is a decent place to store a brief case or to place carry-out meals. An infant seat will fit in the rear seat.

Access to the rear seat is with fingertip control. Lift a lever on a front seatback and the seatback bends while the entire seat moves forward.

Behind the rear seat is a storage area of 9.5 cubic feet and that, surprisingly, is large enough for a trip to the grocery store. The hatch with access to that storage area is standard on all Fiat models.

If more room is needed, utilize the back seat. The split rear seatbacks fold to add 10 more cubic feet for cargo purposes.

Interior design is somewhat artsy, but also practical. Information one readily needs is on a round display (three inches in diameter) on the dashboard behind the steering wheel. Information includes date (day, month, year), time, outside and engine temperatures, traveling speed, weather-related road conditions, fuel level

and miles traveled.

Gauge information in the Fiat is stacked in pyramid style behind the steering wheel and, on first glance, can be odd.

Upon close inspection, it makes sense and is a good use of limited dashboard space.

A $400 optional navigation system has a screen poised atop the dashboard. The nav does not impede sight lines to the front.

There are two power windows in front with neither one express, power door locks and exterior mirrors, a manually adjusting driver’s seat, tilt steering column, tachometer, air conditioning, intermittent wipers and a sound system including AM-FM and satellite radio, compact disc player, MP3 playback, auxiliary audio input jack, and steering wheel-mounted redundant controls.

There are cupholders in front and two mounted on the floor in back. Rear park assist and hill start assist are standard.

Disc brake rotors are 10.1 inches in front and 9.4 inches in the rear. Single red calipers control the rotors. This car will not stop on a dime. It might take 130 feet to come to a stop from a speed of 60 mph.

Onboard are seven air bags, (front, sides, overhead) including one bag for the driver’s knee. Stability control, an antilock braking system and tire pres-

sure monitor are among standard safety fare. Headrests work in conjunction with seatbelts. Mechanically, in a crash, the headrests move forward to help prevent whiplash.

Warranty coverage is four years or 50,000 miles with 24-hour roadside assistance.

Designed for city use, Fiat’s Italian origins can be traced to use on the narrow and crooked streets of Europe.

In 2011, Sergio Marchionne launched the Fiat 500 in the North American (United States, Canada, Mexico) market.

Fiat’s venture into the United States market came 27 years after it left. Earlier forays into this market were disappointing. Fiat had developed a reputation for selling vehicles of poor quality. This time around, Fiat has placed more emphasis on quality. This emphasis is evidenced in the warranty of four years or 50,000 miles with four years of unlimited roadside assistance.

Fiat, based in Turin, Italy, is an acronym for Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino. In English, that means Italian Automobile Factory of Turin. The company owns and builds Lancia, Alfa Romeo and Ferrari automotibles. Fiat bought a controlling interest in Chrysler Group (includes Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram, SRT, Mopar) in 2009. Marchionne is the chief executive officer. Fiats are assembled in Mexico for the North American market.

Marchionne predicted sales of 50,000 units in the first year back in the U.S. He was off the mark. Sales were 19,769 in 2011, 43,772 in 2012 and 13,511 through the first four months of this year.

The 500 is the only Fiat model sold in North America at the present time. Fiat is one of those small cars that will find a following, much as the Mini Cooper has and the Smart car has not. SmartForTwo is simply too small for most North American households. The Mini Cooper, for a small hatchback, has size and weight equivalent to a 2,500-pound Fiat and both vehicles excel at fuel economy.

Even in the city, these cars should average 30 miles per gallon of premium unleaded gasoline. The Mini has more pop under the hood. Mini Cooper prices are in the $20,000 to $30,000 range.

There is a natural price progression of gasoline-powered Fiat 500s starting at $16,100, and topping out at $26,000 for an Abarth convertible.

‘Pacific Rim’ a satisfying CGI slugfest Another weekend in this summer of 2013 has arrived and that can mean only one thing, the world is coming to an end again.

In Guillermo del Toro’s visually thrilling but dramatically plodding “Pacific Rim,” Earth’s imminent demise will be caused by enormous sea creatures that emerge from the Pacific Ocean. They have traveled through a dimensional rift that opens in a trench at the bottom of the Pacific.

The world’s governments unite and decide the best way to combat giant monsters is to build giant robots. That’s quite a leap of logic, and if you aren’t willing to go with it you better stay home. Del Toro, who co-wrote the script with Travis Beacham (“Clash of the Titans”), treats this outlandish premise with dead seriousness, which is both the movie’s greatest strength and deepest flaw.

“Pacific Rim” is del Toro’s loving tribute to the movies of Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra and their Toho Studios brethren.

These are known as kaiju movies to purists, using the Japanese word for giant beasts, and the scientists in “Pacific Rim” name the monsters Kaiju.

Del Toro simultaneously pays tribute to the related Japanese genre of giant robots, a history that includes Gigantor, the Shogun Warriors and dozens more. The deliriously demented 1960s Japanese show “Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot” proves to be a stronger influence on “Pacific Rim” than any Godzilla movie.

The first surprise, and just about the only one, is that “Pacific Rim” is not the movie you think it will be. It is the sequel to the movie you think it will be. All the stuff about the first monster attack (in San Fran-

“Pacific Rim” opens in theaters today. cisco) and the construction and deployments of the giant robot army, called the Jaeger Program after the German word for “hunter,” is covered in a relatively brief, clip-filled recap at the outset narrated by star Charlie Hunnam. In a Roland Emmerich movie this material would have occupied the first 90 minutes.

Hunnam plays Jaeger pilot Raleigh Becket, who co-pilots one of the robots, Gipsy Danger, with his brother (the robots are cybernetically controlled, and early trials revealed one person’s mind could not handle the stress).

As they battle a monster off the coast of Alaska, Raleigh’s brother is killed and Raleigh is badly injured. This will be the first in a string of defeats for the Jaegers.

The story resumes five years later. The world’s governments have decided to decommission the Jaegers in favor of barricading all Pacific coastlines with mile-high walls.

The head of the Jaeger Program, Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba), defies the governments

WESTHOFF REVIEWS Jeffrey Westhoff and takes the remaining four Jaegers, including the rebuilt Gipsy Danger, to a still-functioning base in Hong Kong (government oversight of the Jaeger Program is monumentally lax) to wage a guerilla campaign against the monsters. “We’re not an army anymore,” Pentecost tells his followers. “We’re a resistance.”

Pentecost lures Raleigh out of retirement to pilot Gipsy Danger. But who will his new co-pilot be? Raleigh favors Pentecost’s young aide Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi, Oscar nominee for “Babel”).

Pentecost forbids it, saying he has his reasons. You can guess how this will play out.

The major problem with “Pacific Rim” is that you can guess how most of it will play out. Like Quentin Tarantino, del Toro is a film fanatic who builds his movies from the spare parts of

outdated genres. But while Tarantino will twist old tropes inside out, del Toro here presents them as stolidly as the films he borrowed them from.

Look past the trappings of the Kaiju and the Jaegers, and “Pacific Rim” uses the same plot as any war picture about a hotshot pilot with a tragic past and a reckless streak who clashes repeatedly with a principled commanding officer. Del Toro even borrows from “Top Gun” with a rival pilot (Robert Kazinsky) who hates Raleigh’s style.

All the flaws and predictability get blown off the screen once the fighting begins, and fortunately the Jaeger-on-Kaiju action occurs often enough to get the audience’s adrenaline pumping but not long enough to leave the audience exhausted. The most exhilarating battle in “Pacific Rim,” a slugfest in Hong Kong, occurs in the middle of the story, not the end.

Del Toro unleashes his inner 11-year-old during the action scenes, and the inner 11-year-old of anyone watching should be delighted. Actual 11-year-olds will think they are in monster movie heaven. But you have to shut off any knowledge of physics during the fight sequences.

The weak link in the cast is Hunnam, who is a capable actor but a bland choice for leading man. Couple Hunnam’s uninspiring presence with del Toro’s decision to play the plot as straight as an arrow, and “Pacific Rim” winds up a spectacle with just enough monster mashing to satisfy.

Yet the story never achieves the mischievous glee of del Toro’s Hellboy movies.

Transgender woman seeks rules on dating Dear Abby: I am a 30-year-old transgender woman who has just started her journey. Feeling more comfortable in my skin, I have been going to some local hangouts with some friends from work and meeting straight men. My question is, when is it appropriate to disclose that I am a preoperative trans woman?

Dear Reader: Your body reacts to acute stressors with a “fight-orflight” response. Thirty thousand years ago, the acute stressor for your ancestors may have been the sight of several lions heading in their direction. In a person who has heart disease – dangerously narrowed arteries of the heart – a sudden rush of adrenaline can make the heart work harder. The insufficient blood supply to a hardworking heart can trigger life-threatening irregular heart rhythms.

Sudden surges of fear and anger can cause sudden death.

For example, following the Northridge, Calif., earthquake in 1994, heart attacks increased greatly. The same happened after 9/11 – not just in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania, but all over the United States.

The more important negative effect on our health comes from chronic stress. The constant drip-drip-drip of worry – from financial fears, say, or a troubled marriage – tends to build up as the days roll on.

This constant stress doesn’t find a quick physical release (like running across the street to avoid being hit by a bus); the

stress recurs throughout the day. It is so constant that even when you have a moment when nothing is happening to worry you, you worry that something is waiting for you just around the corner.

When the fight-or-flight response is chronically in the “on” position, the body suffers.

Stress can bring on or worsen many health conditions, including depression, diabetes, headaches and insomnia. Stress is a prime risk factor for high blood pressure and a major risk factor for heart disease. It also affects the immune system, making you more susceptible to colds and other common illnesses.

It’s impossible to sidestep all sources of stress – and you wouldn’t want to. Challenges add zest to life and sometimes deliver satisfying rewards.

But if stress is starting to wear you down, you can learn to perceive and manage it in healthier ways. Exercise, meditation, yoga and deep breathing are just a few relaxation strategies to look into. They really work.

College student’s snacking habit leads to weight gain Dr. Wallace: I’m home on summer break from the University of Hawaii. I have finished my first year at the university, and I will start my second year in early September. Even though I was born in California, I am 100 percent Hawaiian.

That’s why I wanted to get my college education in Hawaii.

When I arrived home, my parents were shocked that I was 12 pounds heavier than when I left to go to Hawaii. They were shocked and wanted to know why I gained so much weight. I told them that when I’m studying I get the munchies, and I study a lot because I want to get good grades.

My plan is to eventually be a veterinarian and good grades are a must. I told my parents that I will stop munching next year.

Is it possible I can eliminate munching 100 percent? What do you think? – Nameless, Riverside, Calif.

Dear Nameless: The “in” word for munching while you’re hitting the books is “grazing,” and college students graze more than cattle – an activity guaranteed to fatten you up. For instance, two handfuls of pretzels equal about 220 calories. And most grazers don’t stop at two handfuls. The same amount of granola equals 330 calories.

Trail mix will cost you 360 calories, and two handfuls of almonds equal 680 calories.

According to dietitian Ann Litt, who works with young people, the main problem with grazing is that it’s mindless.

She doesn’t discourage eating between meals.

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace Her advice to students is this: “Sit down, put food on the plate or in a bowl, and pay attention to what you are eating rather than grabbing from a box until it’s empty.”

When the munchies hit, she suggests trying any of the following snacks. Each has between 150 and 250 calories and will be more filling and more nutritious than the usual junk foods: instant hot cereal packets, two hardboiled eggs, a carton of yogurt and toast, string cheese and a pear, skim milk and a breakfast bar.

Dear Nameless: Birth control pills are made of synthetic compounds similar to the hormones produced within a female’s body. When taken regularly in the dosage prescribed by a physician, the pill prevents pregnancy by preventing eggs from being released from the ovaries. Without a fertilized egg, pregnancy is impossible.

What should he do after taking the heart-queen lead with his ace?

North made a game-invitational limit raise. South’s decision to plunge into five diamonds worked well. If he had rebid a scientific three hearts, trying to reach three no-trump, West might have deduced that his opponents were weak in spades and led that suit. Then five diamonds would have failed.

South has three potential losers: two spades and one club.

He has 10 winners: two hearts, six diamonds and two clubs. So it seems as though he needs the club finesse to work. However, South can improve those odds considerably.

Declarer should draw trumps, cash his second heart winner, and cast adrift with a spade. The defenders take two tricks in the suit ending with West. (If East is on lead, he must either play into dummy’s club king-jack tenace or concede a ruff-and-sluff.)

When West shifts to a club, South plays low from the dummy. Here, East has to put up the queen, so the contract is home. But if East can play the 10, declarer still has the finesse of dummy’s jack available. He goes down only when East has both the 10 and queen.
