Senator honored with award In recognition of her support of Illinois law enforcement, state Sen. Christine Radogno, R-Lemont, received an award July 1 at the Lemont Police Department for championing efforts to protect drug-enforcement officials. In 2012, Radogno sponsored House Bill 4081, which provides an exemption in the state’s eavesdropping law for undercover narcotics officers. The bill allows officers who are investigating a felony drug violation to record or listen to conversations during the course of that investigation without a court order.

Heritage Fest offers affordable family entertainment

By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – The village of Lemont is bringing back favorites and a couple of new attractions for its 23rd annual Heritage Fest, from 4 to 11 p.m.

July 13 in downtown Lemont.

New this year is a trackless train that will be used as transportation between areas of the festival.

The windjammer swing, a carnival ride for adults and children, will be a new attraction for some attendees.

Village of Lemont Marketing Coordinator Donna Pecina said the festival had the ride once several years ago.

The festival also will bring back attractions such as the zipline, Euro bungee jump and smash-the-car.

Pecina said an appeal of the festival is most of the entertainment is free.

LEMONT – A 10-year-old boy living in unincorporated Lemont was beaten with a shovel while he slept during the early morning hours of July 6, according to a news release from the Cook County Sheriff’s Office.

Nathan Hiatt, 29, of Lockport, is charged with two felony counts of aggravated battery for allegedly beating the boy. His bond was set at $250,000 during his court appearance July 7. As of July 10, he re- Nathan Hiatt mained in custody at Cook County Jail in lieu of posting bail.

Cook County Sheriff’s Police received a call about 1 a.m. July 6 reporting that Hiatt struck the boy with a metal fireplace shovel while the child slept in a home in the 15100 block of 131st Street.

The boy’s father awoke to the child’s screams, according to the release. When he shielded his son from the blows, Hiatt allegedly struck the father as well, before leaving the house through the back door.

The homeowner awoke to the noise, saw blood and called 911, the release said. Sheriff’s police were given a description of the offender, which matched that of Hiatt. Officers responded within minutes, locating Hiatt in the yard, under a tree.

The father and son were treated at a local hospital for their injuries and later released.

Sheriff’s police detectives learned that the father, son and Hiatt attended a get-together hosted by the homeowner the afternoon of July 5.

Hiatt’s next court appearance is scheduled for July 16 at the Bridgeview Courthouse.

Lemont celebrates Fourth with run, fun SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LEMONT – The Lemont Park District marked the Fourth of July with an Independence Day Extravaganza on July 3 and the Lemont Freedom Run on July 4.

Highlights of the Extravaganza included a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, a bean bag tournament and a performance by the band Centerfold. The Foundation Beer Garden and five vendors provided food and drinks. The evening culminated with a fireworks show at dusk.

More than 300 runners participated in the 5K and 10K Freedom Run the next morning. The top three runners in each age and gender category received awards. The race was followed by an after party at the Tap House Grill in Lemont.

Congratulations to the Lemont High School Special Olympics team for its 15 top-five finishes at a regional event in May. Among the team’s successes were five first-place finishes, three second-place finishes and four-third place finishes. Multiple team members qualified for the state competition. Lemont siblings raise funds for summer camp

By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – The Kahle family of Lemont has experience holding garage sales.

Mother Denise Kahle said she held two garage sales a year for 10 years while her children where in Scouts.

A garage sale was the first thing that came to mind when brother and sister Ryan and Dana Kahle wanted to hold a fundraiser for Camp Kesem, a camp for children ages 6 to 16 whose parents have or had

cancer.

Ryan, 19, and Dana, 15, are collecting donated items and holding garage sales at their home throughout the summer, including a sale that will be from 9 to 1 a.m. July 12 and 13 at 18 E. Eureka Drive.

They held their first garage sale fundraiser in 2011 and raised $775. This summer, they already have raised about $1,500.

In 2001, their father, Kerry, was diagnosed with Lynch Syndrome, an inherited disorder that increases the risk

Timberline Knolls art exhibit opens in Lemont LEMONT – Timberline Knolls Residential Treatment Center and the Lemont Center for the Arts are hosting an exhibit featuring the artwork of Timberline Knolls’ residents and staff.

The third annual exhibit, “Honesty,” will be open for public viewing from through Aug. 25 at the Lemont Center for the Arts, 1243 State St., Unit 101.

Former village planner returns to department

the new position Monday.

She is replacing James Brown, who resigned unexpectedly at the end of June, said Village Administrator George Schafer. It is unknown whether he has taken another job.

Jones left the village in

June for a position in Downers Grove.

Schafer said the village was fortunate to facilitate Jones’ return. Previously, Jones had worked with the village for five years.

“She worked well with the community,” he said.

Freddy’s Pizza serves quality Italian by the pound CICERO – Freddy’s Pizza in Cicero has an unassuming exterior that certainly doesn’t scream fine Italian dining. The sign looks like it hasn’t changed in decades, and typical black metal furniture fills the patio packed with patrons.

Through the doors is a scene most commonly found on the streets of Rome.

Cured meats hang from the ceiling, while loaves of fresh-baked bread and rows of Italian goods line shelves.

Instead of a menu, there are large platters of whatever was cooked that day. Trays of ravioli, salads, gelato and other dishes adorn counters as employees and customers jostle for position and food. Food is weighed and priced by the ounce – the old “say when.”

My fellow diner and I were in heaven. We are Italian food lovers, having separately spent time in the country.

What to order?

We watched our fellow customers.

They chatted with the friendly and helpful staff and each other in a way that only locals could – pointing and getting samples of things they were unfamiliar with or undecided on.

Eventually, we opted for a little of a lot of things.

First, we shared a Caprese salad with a side of salami. The mozzarella clearly was fresh, with a mild tang and wonderfully spongy texture. The tomatoes were perfectly ripe with a bit of crunch to them, and the olive oil in which it was bathed was exquisite.

The salami had just enough saltiness to add a lot of flavor.

Next was a ricotta gnocchi in a tomato cream sauce. The potato pasta was unbelievably soft, and the sourness of the ricotta was the absolute star of the dish. The mild sauce kept the emphasis on the gnocchi and creamy cheese. And the sauce had us sopping up the leftovers with chewy fresh bread.

We couldn’t resist grabbing a piece of pizza: a slice with olive, artichoke and prosciutto. The toppings were high quality, and the crust chewy and crispy. The fresh cheese, lightly seasoned tomato sauce, salty pork, olive and artichoke just worked.

The last piece of dinner was a fried rice ball called an arancini, a personal favorite. The outer layer of light breading was perfectly crisp, and the inside was filled with a combination of rice, tomato, spinach and melty cheese that speaks to your soul. Speaking of guilty pleasures, my friend and I couldn’t resist a last one. Not only does Freddy’s serve homemade gelato, but it serves gelato sandwiches. On bread.

Really.

A scoop and a half of gelato on a special sweet bread is lightly toasted, cut into quarters and sprinkled with powdered sugar and chocolate sauce.

How it works, I’m not sure. The different layers of sweetness each add a little something: creamy sweetness from the gelato, savory sweetness from the bread, and the dark sugary sweetness of the chocolate play together in a way that needs to be tried to be believed.

For patrons dining in, there are tables inside and on the patio at Freddy’s Pizza, Gelateria and Italian Grocery.

Another big plus about Freddy’s?

That feast of fine Italian eating came without breaking any piggy banks.

By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Spending so much time away from home this summer, Mike Papierski might not remember what the town of Lemont looks like anymore.

A member of the Team DeMarini 17U Koutnik team, Papierski recently spent a month on the road with tournaments in Ohio, Florida and Missouri and the Area Code Games tryouts in Indiana.

Last weekend, Papierski, who will be a senior catcher for Lemont this school year, was in Georgia for an event and will soon travel

to Tennessee and California for the Area Code Games.

“It’s been crazy,” said Papierski, whose dad is one of the coaches. “The competition is why we do it. High school ball, especially summer ball, there are not too many good pitchers. Most of the time here we are seeing good arms. And we are a pretty good team so usually teams are throwing their No. 1 or No. 2 against us.”

Disc golf draws more people to local parks

By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com Disc golf is a growing sport and courses are popping up all over the Chicago area and the country in recent years.

According to dgcoursereview.com, a website that pools information about courses with an emphasis on player reviews similar to how yelp. com works for restaurants, there are 190 courses in Illinois and 4,267 in the United States.

Most of those are free public courses built on park district land, but there are some private courses as well.

Molex’s Lisle Campus had a nine-hole course built in 2010.

Edgebrook Golf Course in Chicago has a set of 18 baskets set up on the golf course that allows players to play alongside golfers, and even rent a cart, as long as they are willing to pay for a round.

Some courses have been around since the 1970s – West Park in Joliet was created in 1979 – but as the popularity of the sport has grown demand for courses has gone up. Among the 15 courses in the western suburbs, 11 were built since 2005 and six since 2010.

“The last five years was a great growth period for disc golf,” said Cathy Kamm, a Lombard resident that designs courses with her husband, Mike, under the name Midwest Disc Golf. “Park Districts are looking for disc golf now. It used to be disc golfers looking for courses.”

Kress Creek Farms in West Chicago is an example of a newer course built by a park district.

West Chicago Park District Executive Director Gary Major said it was a simple story as to why they put in the 18hole course in 2011.

“We had 50 acres of land, but it had topography and trees on it,” Major said. “We had good space for it.”

Since disc golf doesn’t require maintained greens and since flat, open land is typically undesirable, Kress Creek Farms was an ideal fit. Major said it was a relatively inexpensive venue to create and volunteers helped install the

committed to Louisiana State University. They will join fellow Lemont standout Ethan Pocic, who will be a freshman on the Tigers’ football team this fall.

“It was pretty much a coincidence,” Papierski said.

“Jake went down there a week before (for a visit) and he told me he was committing. I waited for a bit (to decide) but him going there had a little bit of a factor.

“And now to have three people from Lemont going to LSU, I think that’s crazy.”

They had never discussed the possibility of playing together in college.

“I wouldn’t have really known anybody down there,” Latz said, “and now I’m going down there with somebody I’ve played with since 8 years old. It is definitely exciting.”

Papierski and Latz first met as members of the Lemont Braves. That team eventually broke up but they reconvened in high school.

“We went our separate ways but we always talked,” Papierski said. “Now we are pretty good friends and we hang out outside of baseball as well.”

Lemont won 23 games this spring, but Latz and Papierski hope to avenge their early playoff exit, a 3-0 loss to eventual state champion Joliet Catholic in the regional final.

“We are definitely up for it,” said Latz, who along with Papierski has been limited to one Lemont summer league game.

“The feeling is still there from the non-seniors that we are looking for revenge. We want to get down there (to state). We have a good shot next year and hopefully it turns out well. I know we will be working hard for it.”
