OUT AND ABOUT St. Charles Toyota to raise funds for USO ST. CHARLES – St. Charles Toyota will host a barbecue fundraiser to support the USO, American troops and their families. The Barbecue for the Troops event will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the dealership, 2651 E. Main St., St. Charles.

All of the money raised through this barbecue will go directly to USO programs that support deployed troops, military families, wounded, ill and injured troops and their caregivers and families of the fallen.

With readings and slides, this presentation tells that story of change through the words of those who were here: visitors, settlers, naturalists, hunters, poets, journalists and others.

St. Charles Moose Lodge marks 100th anniversary

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – As the members of St. Charles Moose Lodge #1368 celebrated the lodge’s 100-year anniversary Saturday, Mooseheart family teacher Mike Worden expressed gratitude for what the lodge does.

“They’re the reason we exist,” Worden said.

“The lodge and all the other lodges around the world fund what we do.”

Mooseheart Child City and School, located between North Aurora and Batavia, is a community and school for children and

teens in need.

Mooseheart this month also will celebrate its 100-year anniversary.

Worden and his wife, Linda, have been family teachers at Mooseheart for almost 16 years.

As a way to show their gratitude, the couple helped run some of the games during Saturday’s celebration along with several Mooseheart students.

But St. Charles Moose Lodge doesn’t just raise funds for Mooseheart. Last year, the lodge donated more than $50,000 in cash to charities.

Some of its activities have included donating turkeys for

Lazarus House’s Thanksgiving dinner at the Salvation Army’s community center in St. Charles, and helping the St. Charles Police Department purchase a police dog.

“We take care of our own here,” said Mike Rallo, current governor of St. Charles Moose Lodge.

With 1,200 male members and 600 female females, the St. Charles Moose Lodge is one of the largest in the state.

“We are a family place,” said St. Charles Moose Lodge member Pete Baldino. “We’ve got great volunteers and great people. It’s all about the people.”

But when VandeLoo, 5, of Batavia raised her hand in victory, with blue, pink and yellow melted ice cream smeared all over her face, it was through a mixture of pain and pleasure that she claimed the title of the fastest eater of ice cream under age 6 in her city.

“She’s been in training for this for the last few weeks,” joked her father, Tim VandeLoo, a smile creasing his face. “Maybe even for the past year.”

Brookelyn and her younger brother, Blake, 2, on Sunday were among more than three dozen contestants to tackle the task of eating ice cream from a foil-lined gutter as fast as they could, during the annual ice cream eating contest at Batavia’s Windmill City Fest.

Contestants in the ice cream contest competed against peers in four age groups: 6 and under, 7 to 10, 11 to 17 and 18 years and older.

Most of the 41 contestants competed in the two youngest age brackets, each standing in front of the trough-like gutters, their hands placed behind their backs, attacking a scoop of ice cream with nothing more than their mouths.

Their parents, family and friends gathered around to snap pictures or record video of the ice cream eating frenzy and forever capture images of their ice cream-smeared faces.

VandeLoo has competed in

the event for the previous two years. Last year, she placed third, said her mother, Jennifer VandeLoo. The VandeLoo family had come to the festival Saturday night, but returned Sunday afternoon specifically to allow their daughter to take another crack at the title, Jennifer said.

After the competition, the children also were likely to participate in the annual fire hose challenge, she said.

“It’s great,” Jennifer said.

“They can eat ice cream as fast as they can, and then they can get hosed off after.”

The family was just some of the crowd estimated in the hundreds Sunday afternoon.

Roger Breisch, executive director of the Batavia Cham-

ber of Commerce, one of the groups organizing the Windmill City Fest, said the event this year was a success, with “huge crowds” packing the festival site Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

“The weather has been wonderful,” Breisch said.

“The afternoons were hot, but the nights were cool, and with the size of the crowds in here

at night, it had to be in the thousands.”

He said he received good reports from vendors, noting they had sold “huge amounts” of food and drink during the festival, and particularly during the musical performances each of the three evenings.

“It’s been a really great festival this year,” he said.

At 7-on-7, Geneva football hopes to have it covered

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com AURORA – Seven-on-seven football uses a number of scoring and rules changes that do not translate to a 48-minute game.

Still, there’s one interval Geneva coach Rob Wicinski truly values, and it doesn’t take him long to strum his beard and point it out.

Quarterbacks are supposed to release the ball within four seconds, so whenever Wicinski saw a Vikings defensive back or linebacker hold coverage in Saturday’s 7-on-7 at Aurora Central Catholic, he nodded approvingly and stuck the data in his visor.

“Our offense can go out and throw, play pitch and catch any time on air,” Wicinski said. “It’s the defense. If you can find a kid that can cover out here ... he’s going to be able to do it in the game when there’s not quite as much time.”

Closing the gap – on four seconds and on the quarterback in the pocket – starts up front with linemen such as Vikings senior defensive end Billy Douds.

Although Saturday’s open offensive

format kept Douds from rushing the passer or brushing up against any opposing offensive linemen, he saw the day as an opportunity to progress in his agility and reads.

“It’s about the reps. Kids trying out new positions, getting reps on both sides of the ball,” said Douds, a 6-foot-3, 215-pounder who also saw time at tight end. “And kids who aren’t maybe getting in on other 7-on-7s, this is a chance for them to get in. And it’s a good chance to play other teams that we don’t normally see.”

One such team, Freeport, matched up against the Vikings as Streamwood, Geneva’s Upstate Eight Conference River Division rival, warmed up to face another team in the early afternoon.

Glancing at the Geneva offense, a Sabres player looked at the quarterback and figured it was sophomore Nick Derr, a Florida State baseball recruit who started after Daniel Santacaterina broke his clavicle in a Week 3 loss at Batavia last season.

“It has to be,” the player said. “Who else is that good of an athlete?”

Had he not been away from the team

on another commitment, Santacaterina surely would have taken exception.

He’ll be back under center as a junior following a full recovery, with Derr set to start at quarterback for the sophomore team.

Mike Landi will be among those vying for the varsity backup spot.

“It’s a competition. The competition’s out,” Wicinski said. Nick’s priorites are just a little different. If he’s OK, he’s a great athlete and he’ll play varsity football someday. Just not this year right now.”

Counting the host Chargers, 22 teams committed to the 7-on-7, including Burlington Central and Wheaton Academy.

ACC coach Brian Casey touted the versatile mix of schools. Freeport Aquin was the smallest on hand, but on this day shared the ACC campus with schools such as four-time defending Class 5A champion Montini, Wheaton North and Geneva.

Casey called that group among the “flag-bearers, if you will, of success,” and later added this about the event: “We cover the spectrum in terms of size and location.”

Sly took in the sights at a pair of football 7-on-7s this week, a Wednesday night tilt at St. Charles East before a glorious Saturday at Aurora Central Catholic.

A quick stroll around both grounds revealed that “Football in July” is alive and well. Crowds watched series of unscored – but still consequential – plays in the name of a sneak peek at pigskin.

Well, pigskin without linemen, anyway.

Fall practices are set to start Aug. 14, with the season to kick off 16 days later. Teams already have been immersed in football through summer camps and other 7-on-7s but this week, Sly could feel some heightened intensity amid the laid back atmosphere.

Sly didn’t spot any officials on hand, could you?

Short of a pep band, the hosting campuses sported many of the same sights and sounds we’ll be sure to see during fall Friday nights that are just around the corner.

With fans already in a football state of mind, you can be sure Week 1 will arrive even more quickly than anticipated.

Family affair at the Windmill Whirl 5K

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Many of the runners were well-acquainted with their competitors in Saturday’s Windmill Whirl 5K race – not because of previous races, but because many of the race entrants were related.

Several families ran the race together or the children ran in the Youth 1-Mile Run held earlier in the day, while the parents competed in the 5K event as part of the Windmill City Festival.

“Isn’t that so great?” race director Rachel Schmitt said.

“I feel that happened because we hosted the youth mile and that gave the opportunity for everyone to come out as a family and enjoy the event.”

Colin Young, a former Naperville resident, took top honors for male runners, completing the 5K course in 17:01.76.

Twelve-year-old Daphne Kolody, who lives in Batavia, came in first among female runners with a time of

20:32.21.

“I did this race a year ago.

Last year I got 27 minutes, and this year I got 20 minutes,” Kolody said. “I think the swimming and the soccer that I have been doing really helped improve my time.”

Awards were given to the top three overall winners and the top three runners in various age divisions.

Four members of the Kelly family were among the 112 harriers in the 5K race: Paul, his wife, Jessica, and their two sons – Conor, 10, and Liam, 8.

“It was mom’s idea,” Paul said. “She was going to bring them to the race and I weaseled my way in. We run as a hobby.”

Conor was the first member of the Batavia family to cross the finish line, earning him fourth place in the 1-14 male category, clocking in at 25:58.77. Paul finished less than a second ahead of Liam and earned second place in the 35-39 male division with a time of 27:26.44. Although Jessica was last of the family

to finish, her time of 27:56.54 earned first place in the 35-39 female category.

The Silbernagels of St. Charles were another family that competed in the races.

“I just watched my niece and nephew [in the Youth 1-mile]. They both did real well,” Matt Silbernagel said as he cheered his brother, Adam, on during the 5K race. “Kevin got second overall and Brooke was fourth in her age group [7-9 females].”

Adam Silbernagel finished fifth overall and first in the 4044 male divison.

“It’s a great course, it’s right along the river with a great view of Batavia,” he said. “Hopefully, in a year or two we will all run the 5K together.”

Dave Ginsburg (18:41.53) and Brandon Johnson (19:06.45) finished second and third among the male runners.

Elizabeth Ott (21:23.03) took second place in the women’s division and Christina Marotta (21:41.69) took third.

When you are the declarer, good plans will often help to make a clear-cut dream – bringing home the contract – come true. To do that, you do not need nine keys; five are sufficient: Track your tricks (count losers and winners), Read the lead, audition the Auction, anticipate possible Dangers, and watch your Entries – or “TRADE.” Let’s start with track your tricks and read the lead. How should South play in four hearts after West leads the spade 10 around to declarer’s bare ace?

Although South has only 12 high-card points, his hand is worth a jump rebid. This typically promises seven winners, which his hand has: one spade, five hearts and one club.

South has four losers: one diamond and three clubs, though he seems to have 10 winners: two spades, seven hearts and one club. However, here, if declarer draws two rounds of trumps ending on the board and discards, say, the diamond nine on the spade king, he goes down. West ruffs, and later South concedes three clubs.

When the opening lead is a spot card in dummy’s firstbid suit, it will usually be a singleton. Declarer should immediately cash the club ace and play another club (or duck the first round of clubs).

East does best to win, cash the diamond ace, and lead a spade. Yes, shifting to a trump stops an overtrick, but here South might carelessly ruff low, allowing West to overruff and play a trump.
