Former cutter hesitant to show clients scars Dear Abby: I was recently hired for a job I have wanted for years. I am a counselor for troubled teens. I love it, and I empathize with those I work with. (Ten years ago, I was a teen placed in a similar facility for some of the same reasons.)

The problem is, when I was in a dark period of my life, I was a cutter. I still have deep scars on one arm that are noticeable. How do I handle this now that I’m in the psychological field? I don’t wish to go into detail about my past, as that would be poor boundaries as an employee and counselor. But it’s hard to avoid with hot summer weather here and my past literally “on my sleeve.”

I hope this will remind other cutters that their wounds may be something they wish they could undo once they are emotionally healed. – Nameless in America Dear Nameless: I hope your comments will remind other cutters not only that actions have consequences, but also that there are more effective solutions for emotional pain than self-injury. This is something you should discuss with your employers. My thinking

is, if your clients see your scars, it may help them to talk about their own cutting, which would be therapeutic.

Dear Abby: I recently became a father for the third time. My children are 18, 5 and 3 weeks old. My wife, “Molly,” had complications during this last pregnancy that caused her blood pressure to remain in a heightened state for the last few months of her pregnancy. She had been hoping for a little girl, but we were blessed with another boy.

I’m turning 40 and my wife is 37. I have reached a point in my life where I’m ready to be done changing diapers, but Molly wants to try again for a little girl. I have issues with

my back and have a hard time getting to my 5-year-old’s level now. I’m afraid if we continue having children, I’ll be unable to be the involved dad I want to be.

Am I a bad husband for feeling this way? I don’t want Molly to go through life regretting not having the daughter she always wanted, but there is no guarantee it will happen if we decide to try again.

Dear Stopping At Three: You are thinking clearly. At 37, and with her medical history, your wife would be considered “at risk” if she becomes pregnant again. While I sympathize with the fact that she yearns for a daughter, allow me to share a true story with you: A man was in a similar situation to yours, but he had four daughters. So he and his wife decided they would try “one more time” for a son.

Sure enough, his wife became pregnant. She delivered beautiful identical twin ... daughters. At that point he gave up and had a vasectomy!

Discovery could lead to new diabetes cure Dear Dr. K: I have diabetes. I read that scientists had made a major discovery about how people with diabetes could naturally make more insulin.

How excited should I be about this?

Dear Reader: I believe you are referring to a discovery by the laboratory of a colleague here at Harvard, Dr. Douglas Melton. It’s a great story.

About 20 years ago, Dr. Melton was a young scientist who was studying the basic biology of how cells work. He wasn’t focusing on any particular disease. Then his infant son developed severe Type 1 diabetes.

That’s a disease in which the body’s immune system at-

ASK DR. K Anthony L. Komaroff tacks the pancreas, a spongy little organ inside the abdomen. The attack destroys the pancreas cells that produce insulin, called beta cells. As a result, the body does not have enough insulin, the hormone that directs blood sugar – our body’s main source of energy – into our cells. Sugar levels rise in the blood, and the body’s cells don’t get enough energy.

Prompted by his son’s illness, Dr. Melton turned the focus of his scientific work to trying to cure diabetes.

First, he and other scientists discovered, to their surprise, some good news and some bad news. The good news: The pancreas did have a way of making new beta cells. The old cells could divide, forming young beta cells. The bad news: The pancreas didn’t seem able to produce new beta cells in nearly sufficient amounts to make up for the cells killed by diabetes.

Undiscouraged, Dr. Melton reasoned that if older beta cells could be prompted to make new young beta cells – in any amount – then the body probably had chemical signals that drove the process. He began to search for them.

In early May 2013, Dr.

Melton reported in the prestigious scientific journal Cell that his research team had indeed found such a chemical signal, a hormone, in mice.

The hormone is made in the liver and in fat, and travels through the blood to the pancreas. It is able to coax an old, burned-out pancreas to make lots of new young beta cells. In mice with diabetes, the treatment caused a dramatic improvement in blood sugar. Dr. Melton named the hormone that he discovered betatrophin.

It will, of course, take much more research in mice and then in humans to determine if this newly discovered hormone can serve as a treatment for human diabetes. So,

to answer your question, it’s too soon to get excited.

Still, this is just the latest example of an even larger scientific discovery that has played out over the past 20 years. The human body has much greater power to repair itself naturally than we once imagined. Scientists just need to discover a few tricks to help stimulate the body’s own natural healing, as in this case.

To transform this important discovery into a new treatment for diabetes we need more medical research.

Teen: I can’t sleep since my boyfriend moved Dr. Wallace: Ever since my boyfriend and I have parted ways, I’ve been having an extremely difficult time falling asleep. And when I do finally fall asleep, I wake up several times during the night thinking about Rick.

• If you wake up during the night and can’t go back to sleep, don’t reward yourself by raiding the refrigerator or watching the late-late show.

Such rewards will serve as an incentive to make a habit of waking up.

Read the lead to make contract Mark Twain said, “A person who won’t read has no advantage over one who can’t read.”

That can also apply to bridge. The player who does not pay any attention to the opening lead has no advantage over the player who sees it but fails to work out what information it imparts.

Sometimes declarer can work out what to do just by analyzing the opening lead.

In this example, how should South play in three no-trump after West leads a fourth-highest spade five?

This is surely the most common two-bid auction. It is true that on this deal, three no-trump can be defeated if West is inspired enough to lead a heart, and five diamonds can always be made with a good guess in the trump suit. But if you try to get to five of a minor with two balanced hands opposite each other, you will be a big loser in the long run. Go for the nine-trick game unless you are sure it cannot make.

South starts with seven top tricks: two spades, two diamonds and three clubs. And if the diamonds run, there is an overtrick waiting in the wings. But if the diamonds are 3-0, who has the tripleton?

Read West’s lead. How many spades did he start with?

Since South can see the two, three and four, West must have led from exactly a four-card suit. And if he is void in diamonds, he must have at least five hearts or five clubs and surely would have led from that suit – length rules in no-trump.

So only East can be void in diamonds.

Declarer should take the first trick and cash the diamond ace.

AN ORDINANCE ADOPTING PREVAILING WAGE RATES TO BE PAID TO LABORERS, MECHANICS AND OTHER WORKERS PERFORMING CONSTRUCTION OF PUBLIC WORKS FOR THE VILLAGE OF KIRKLAND, DeKALB COUNTY, ILLINOIS WHEREAS, the State of Illinois has enacted the Prevailing Wage Act, approved June 26, 1941, as amended, being 820 ILCS 130/0.01 through 130/12 (the "Act"); and WHEREAS, the Act requires that during the month of June of each calendar year the Village Board of the Village of Kirkland investigate and ascertain the prevailing rate of wages, as defined in said Act, in the "Locality" of the Village for laborers, mechanics and other workers performing construction of public works for the Village.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED by the Mayor and the Board of Trustees of the Village of Kirkland, DeKalb County, Illinois, as follows: SECTION 1: To the extent and as required by the Act, the general prevailing rate of wages in this locality for laborers, mechanics and other workers engaged in the construction of public works coming under the jurisdiction of the Village is hereby ascertained to be the same as the prevailing rate of wages for construction work in DeKalb County as determined by the Department of Labor of the State of Illinois (the "Department") as of June 1, 2013, a copy of that determination being attached hereto and incorporated herein by reference. As required by said Act, any and all revisions of the prevailing rate of wages by the Department shall supersede the Department's June determination and apply to any and all public works construction undertaken by the Village. The definition of any terms appearing in this Ordinance which are also used in the Act shall be the same as the definitions specified in the Act. SECTION 2: Nothing herein is intended to apply or shall be construed to apply said prevailing rate of wages as herein ascertained to any work or employment performed on behalf of this Village except public works construction to the extent required by the Act. SECTION 3: The Village Clerk shall publicly post or keep available for inspection by any interested party in the Village Hall this determination of prevailing rate of wages. A copy of this determination or of the current revised determination of prevailing rate of wages then in effect shall be attached to all contract specifications.

SECTION 4: By July 15th, the Village Clerk shall file a certified copy of this Ordinance with the Secretary of State of Illinois in Springfield and with the Illinois Department of Labor.

SECTION 5: Within thirty (30) days after filing a certified copy of this Ordinance with the Secretary of State, the Village Clerk shall cause to be published in a newspaper of general circulation within the area a notice that this determination is effective and constitutes the determination of this public body.

SECTION 6: The Village Clerk shall mail a copy of this Ordinance to any employer, to any association of employers, and to any person or association of employees, who have filed their names and addresses requesting copies of any determination stating the particular rates and the particular class of workers whose wages will be affected by such rates.

SECTION 7: If any section, paragraph, clause, or provision of this Ordinance shall be held invalid, the invalidity thereof shall not affect any of the other provisions of this Ordinance.

SECTION 8: All Ordinances in conflict herewith are hereby repealed to the extent of such conflict.

SECTION 9: This Ordinance shall be in full force and effect from after its passage, approval and publication as provided by law.
