STC Moose Lodge marks 100 years

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – As the members of St. Charles Moose Lodge #1368 celebrated the lodge’s 100-year anniversary Saturday, Mooseheart family teacher Mike Worden expressed gratitude for what the lodge does.

“They’re the reason we exist,” Worden said. “The lodge and all the other lodges around the world fund what we do.”

Mooseheart Child City and School, located between North Aurora and Batavia, is a community and school for children and teens in need.

Mooseheart this month also will celebrate its 100-year anniversary.

As a way to show their gratitude, the couple helped run some of the games during

But the St. Charles Moose

Lodge doesn’t just raise funds for Mooseheart. Last year, the lodge donated more than $50,000 in cash to charities.

Some of its activities have included donating turkeys for the Lazarus House Thanksgiving dinner at the Salvation Army’s community center in St. Charles, and helping the St. Charles Police Department purchase a police dog.

“We take care of our own here,” said Mike Rallo, current governor of the St. Charles Moose Lodge.

With 1,200 male members and 600 female members, the St. Charles Moose Lodge is one of the largest in the state.

“We are a family place,” said St. Charles Moose Lodge member Pete Baldino. “We’ve got great volunteers and great people. It’s all about the people.”

Motorcycle crash victim remembered

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – Nathan K. Hagen, 25, of Campton Hills was remembered this week as a friendly, outgoing young man.

“He was one of the best guys I knew,” said his cousin, Trevor Hagen, 25, speaking for the family. “He was one of those guys who makes sure everyone is happy, everyone is having a good time.

He was friendly and outgoing, one of the friendliest guys I ever met. He could talk to anybody.”

Hagen died Friday after a motorcycle crash in Elgin at the intersection of Randall Road and Highland Avenue shortly before 7 a.m., police said.

Hagen was heading north on Randall on a Yamaha R1 when he collided with a BMW turning east onto Highland, driven by Gregory F. Zankle, 56, of the 400 block of Kimball Avenue, Woodstock, police said.

Witnesses told police the motorcycle was riding the shoulder just before the crash

and entered the intersection from a nonlane portion of the road before impact, according to a statement from police.

Hagen was taken to Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said Hagen was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. A spokeswoman for the Kane County Coroner’s Office said they would not comment on the cause of death, pending a continuing investigation and toxicology results.

His cousin said that after graduating in 2006 from St. Charles North High School,

Hagen went to the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute in Florida.

Hagen worked for a short time fixing motorcycles, then went to work for Uesco Industries Inc. in Alsip, traveling all over to install industrial cranes in warehouses, Trevor Hagen said.

In addition to being gifted mechanically, Hagen’s other interest was motorcycles, he said.

“That was one of his bigger passions, too,” Trevor Hagen said. “He had gotten the Yamaha R1, a really highend, really nice bike. Actually, he had just got it earlier this year.”

Hagen also is survived by his parents, Kevin and Sandy Hagen of Campton Hills; a sister; and grandparents.

The visitation was held Monday at Moss-Norris Funeral Home in St. Charles, followed by a funeral service and private interment.

Trevor said his cousin would be missed by all who knew him.

“He was just one of the better human beings I’ve had the pleasure of knowing,” Trevor said. “He was one of those kids with a really big heart.”

Fines, suspensions for liquor violations

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Two businesses cited for serving underage during a police compliance check during Swedish Days last month will each pay a $1,000 fine and have their liquor licenses suspended for one 24-hour period.

Liquor license holders Lindsey De Los Santos of Sergio’s Mexican Cantina, 30 W. State St. and Michael Anastasio of Fiora’s Restaurant, 317 S. Third St. agreed to the fines and judgments in a consent order.

Fiora’s will have its license suspended Friday and Sergio’s will be suspended Friday, Aug. 23.

The charges and findings were read at a liquor hearing held Monday before the City Council met.

tos both acknowledged they were waiving their rights to a hearing.

“I agree with the disposition of these terms of the consent orders and finding of facts and will issue a separate order for each,” Mayor Kevin Burns said, acting in his capacity as the Geneva Liquor Commissioner.

Police do compliance checks during the festival every year, with underaged volunteers who go into the beer gardens and establishments with their real identification to see if they will be turned away or allowed in and served.

Of 16 checked on June 21, three served two 19-year-olds beer, police said.

After the hearing, De Los Santos said Sergio’s might not offer a beer garden at the next festival because it is not worth the liability because the business’s focus is more of a

restaurant than a bar.

“It is pretty harsh, but it is a pretty serious thing for minors to be served,” De Los Santos said of the fine and suspension. “We understand that and we take full responsibility.

And we apologize to the city … I always think things are a blessing in disguise. Maybe this is something that will help us prevent something worse from happening. We’ll be more careful in the future.”

De Los Santos explained that she and a new server were in a crowded beer garden during the festival when the underage agents were allowed in.

De Los Santos said both she and the server had Beverage Alcohol Sellers and Servers Education and Training certificates.

The two city residents include Charles A. Amenta II, who has lived in St. Charles for six years and Robert Gehm, who has lived in St. Charles for 23 years.

Rogina said both of the city residents applied to be 3rd Ward alderman when Rogina vacated the post to become mayor.

“Both are committed to the city and want to serve the city well,” he said.

“My philosophy has evolved,” Burns said. “We believe that the penalty is to be certain, it has to be severe and should also be swift. We believe enacting that penalty within 30 days of the hearing makes much more sense.”

Also cited for serving underage were Michael Knuth and Nicholas Mercadante of EvenFlow Music & Spirits, 302 W. State St. “We are still in negotiations and discussions with them,” Burns said. “We hope to have a hearing this week.”

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – After hearing more details about the operations of a mosquito control company, the St. Charles City Council on Monday approved a pilot incentive program to draw the company’s headquarters to St. Charles.

The pilot program that was unanimously approved allows the city to spend up to $275,000 to Clarke Group, a company that will soon occupy space at 675 Sidwell Court. Through the pilot program, the city awards more money to the company if local residents are hired.

Lyell Clarke, CEO of Clarke Group, presented the council with a better picture of how the company operates.

He said the company mostly does laboratory work, where they identify new formulas for mosquito control treatments. He said the company’s current labs include an “insectory” and larval testing.

Aldermen on Monday unanimously voted to table discussion on the issue indefinitely.

The deadline for passing a local ordinance regulating assault weapons is Friday.

“I am against any gun restrictions on a local level,” 1st Ward Alderman Garran Sparks said.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said he also was against any local restrictions.

“Local ordinances are about as weak of government as there is,” Schielke said.

“They mean probably nothing more than a slap on the wrist or a fine.”

Batavia Police Chief Gary Schira has said that the city has very few gun crimes, let alone those involving assault weapons.

“To his knowledge, there have never been any crimes committed in the city of Batavia in which an assault weapon was involved,” City Attorney Kevin Drendel said in a memo to aldermen.

Drendel recommended that Batavia aldermen not pass a local ordinance.

“It’s great,” Jennifer VandeLoo said. “They can eat ice cream as fast as they can, and then they can get hosed off after.”

Sunny, clear skies brought more than 10,000 people to the festival, said Kari Miller, director of marketing and public relations for the Batavia Park District, which organizes the festival with the Batavia Chamber of Commerce and the city of Batavia.

Attendance bounced back this year after taking a hit last summer because of sweltering heat.

“I think the festival is a mainstay in town,” Miller said. “People look forward to it.”

Saturday was the best attended day, she said.

“Saturday was packed,” Miller said. “And on Sunday, we had a ton of contestants in the ice cream eating contest.”

jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Those stopping in at Delnor Hospital in coming months should expect the need to pardon the dust – not to mention other inconveniences associated with the hospital’s continued renovation and construction projects.

Through the summer and into the fall, the hospital will be rebuilding its south parking lot – the lot closest to Randall Road – while simultaneously renovating its south entranceway.

Delnor President Robert Friedberg said the parking lot work is a periodic maintenance item.

“This is a normal reconstruction,” Friedberg said.

“It’s just something that needed to be done.”

However, since the parking lot would be inaccessible during the construction, executives with Cadence Health – the parent health system that operates both Delnor and Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield – opted to also move ahead with plans to renovate the south entrance and certain corridors within the hospital.

When completed, he said, the corridors will be easier to navigate, allowing “straight north-south” public access between each entrance.

Friedberg estimated the

work at the south entrance, which began in May, will be completed by early November.

However, when that work is completed, the hospital will then begin work on a two-story 17,800-square-foot addition to the hospital’s north side.

The addition will help centralize access for heavily-used services, such as cardiology and radiology, and also will include a corridor to provide a direct inside link to the emergency department, a feature the hospital currently lacks.

The addition will be completed in 18 months from the beginning of construction in late 2013 or early 2014, Friedberg said.

He said the construction projects come as part of Cadence’s larger $90 million “reinvestment program” at the hospital.

That program also includes renovations within the hospital’s emergency department and new outpatient clinical space for pediatric subspecialists through Cadence’s partnership with Lurie Children’s Hospital.

He said the money spent to improve clinical services and the hospital’s physical plant and appearance serve as visual indicators to the community of Cadence’s intentions to continue to serve the Tri-Cities area “long-term.”

BATAVIA – Brookelyn VandeLoo had worried about brain freeze.

But when VandeLoo, 5, of Batavia raised her hand in victory, with blue, pink and yellow melted ice cream smeared all over her face, it was through a mixture of pain and pleasure that she claimed the title of the fastest eater of ice cream younger than age 6 in her city.

“She’s been in training for this for the last few weeks,” joked her father, Tim VandeLoo, a smile creasing his face.

“Maybe even for the past year.”

Brookelyn and her younger brother, 2-year-old Blake, on Sunday were among more than three dozen contestants to tackle eating – as fast as they could – ice cream from a foil-lined gutter during the annual ice cream eating contest at Batavia’s Windmill City Fest.

The three-day festival wrapped up Sunday.

Participants in the ice cream contest competed against peers in four age groups: 6 and younger, 7 to 10, 11 to 17, and 18 years and older.

Most of the 41 contestants competed in the two youngest age brackets, each standing in front of the trough-like gutters, their hands placed behind their backs, attacking a scoop of ice cream with nothing more than their mouths.

Their parents, family and friends gathered around to snap pictures or record video of the ice cream eating frenzy and forever capture images of their ice cream-smeared faces.

Brookelyn has competed in the event for the previous two years. Last year, she placed third, said her mother, Jennifer VandeLoo. The VandeLoo family had come to the festival Saturday night, but returned Sunday afternoon specifically to allow their daughter to take another crack at the title,

From 6 to 10 p.m. Wednesday, emergency preparedness coordinators will be on hand at the Kane County Fairgrounds, 25 S. Randall Road, St. Charles, to help families

make a plan for when disaster strikes. The event is part of the “Gear Up, Get Ready” campaign with the Regional Catastrophic Planning Team of Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin.

Don Bryant, agency director for the Kane County Office of Emergency Management, said they’ll be providing a set of documents to help guide families through the creation of an emergency plan, including a place to list important phone numbers and locations

of where the family may gather.

Bryant said floods around the Fox River in April serve as a reminder of the importance of preparing for an emergency.

“Emergencies and disasters can come on suddenly, and families should have a plan in place so each family member knows what to do during an emergency and where to gather should they not be able to stay in their home,” he said.

Sid, formerly dubbed Holden by Emergency Vet Services of St. Charles, was adopted recently by Matt Klimek-Sulak, 26, a technician at the St. Charles Veterinary Clinic where the dog was being treated.

“He never leaves my side,” Klimek-Sulak said. “If I’m home, he’s always next to me.

When we walk, he always has to look back and make sure I’m still there.”

Sid, a 42-pound boxer-mix, had been injured late June 23 near the CVS Pharmacy on Geneva’s east side.

Police took the dog to the emergency vet and sought the animal’s owner.

Practice manager Marty Strauss said the dog had no microchip, and no one ever came forward to claim him.

Sid needs help with pain and surgery on his teeth, which had been broken after being hit.

Klimek-Sulak said Sid needed two teeth pulled and now eats anything and everything.

Klimek-Sulak said he had been wanting a dog for a while, but was not serious about finding a pet – that is, until he met Sid. “I saw the look on his face and heard his back story and I had to give him a good home,” Klimek-Sulak said. “He is the best dog I could have asked for.”

Battling elements all part of the job for house painter

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – With a paint roller in hand, Aaron Page gingerly made his way up a ladder positioned along one side of a turn-of-the-century American Foursquare house Monday on South Van Buren Street in Batavia.

Page was wary of the bee that was hovering around him.

“I don’t like those things,” Page said. “I’ve never been stung by one, so I don’t even know if I’m allergic to them.”

Bees are just one type of hazard that Page has encountered this summer during his job as a house painter. Page, 21, a 2009 St. Charles North High School graduate, is a branch manager for College Works Painting as part of an internship program.

He is a management major at DePaul University.

The weather can be another hazard. The hot sun beats down on Page’s head as he guided the paint roller across the window trim.

After repeating the process several times, he was ready for a break.

“That feels good,” Page said, after gulping down a cup of water.

With heat indexes expected to top 100 degrees this week, Page must make sure he doesn’t overexert himself.

He also has to look out for the well-being of the other painters he has hired for the job.

“I don’t want to kill my guys,” he said. “I definitely don’t want to overwork my guys this week because it’s going to be so hot.”

Every so often, Page checks on painter Jacob Ruhnke as he works on the other side of the house. The heat wasn’t slowing down Ruhnke.

“I’ve probably already sweated out a gallon of water today,” Ruhnke said.

The rainy weather the area has seen lately has pushed Page off schedule.

“It’s been killing me production-wise,” Page said. “All the rainy days have pushed us

“We did a major addition 10 years ago,” Norris said. “The

south side of the house really gets beat up by the sun.”

Page and his crew also had to cover the damage done by a busy woodpecker.

Norris said.

To get closer to the trim work near the roof, Page must push the ladder higher, something he doesn’t relish. He has an aversion to heights.

“I would rather paint closer

to the ground,” he said. “But you have to do what you have to do sometimes.”

House painting runs in his family.

“My dad has been a painter for 35 years,” Page said.

“He did it professionally for 16 years.”

As Page is finding out, each job is different. Last week, he was working on a house in Aurora that proved to be difficult.

“It had all these little decorative peaks, along with bushes and trees near the house that were hard to get around,” Page said.

Page said the internship with College Works Painting has given him more insight into what it takes to run a business.

“You are basically an entrepreneur,” Page said. “You are constantly having to worry about things, like making sure your painters are coming in and rain.”

Page thinks the experience will come in handy, especially since he hopes to someday start his own business.

“I want to open my own body shop,” he said.

ST. CHARLES – Fox River Countryside Fire and Rescue is now equipped with three new oxygen masks to assist animals when they’re rescued from fires.

The masks were donated by Invisible Fence of DuPage as part of a national effort called “Project Breathe.” Scott Lyng, a firefighter paramedic and quartermaster with the department, said – before the donation – the department only had oxygen masks for adult and pediatric patients. The new masks, which come in small, medium and large sizes, are designed to fit better around an animal’s mouth and nose.

He said firefighters will participate in a training session on how to use the equipment Wednesday. He said firefighters often encounter pets when fighting fires, and the masks will offer another means of saving a life.

“We’re there for life safety,” said Lyng, who helped coordinate the donation. “We’re there first and foremost for the people, and second for the structure, and everyone forgets the animals.”

The U.S. Fire Administration does not officially keep track of the number of pets that die in fires, but it is estimated that between 40,000 and 150,000 pets die each year in fires, mostly because of smoke inhalation, according to a news release.

Fire departments in most states do not have the necessary equipment for saving pets, said the news release.

Lyng said pet masks were used in the documentary, “BURN,” a feature about Detroit firefighters. He said there’s a scene where firefighters rescue a pair of pitbull puppies using the pet oxygen masks.

“They did a little chest compression and five minutes later, they were up running around,” he said.

An acquittal in Florida THE WASHINGTON POST The verdict by a Florida jury that George Zimmerman is not guilty of murder or manslaughter in the death of Trayvon Martin settles – pending review by the U.S. Justice Department – the legal question of his criminal culpability. Jurors listened attentively and deliberated carefully, and the rule of law must be respected. But the central tragedy of this case – the death of a 17-year-old boy who had been on a simple errand to get snacks – remains.

“You have no further business with the court,” the Seminole County judge told Mr. Zimmerman moments after the jury of six women at 9:47 p.m. Saturday delivered the twin verdicts of not guilty to the tense courtroom – and to a national audience attracted by the cable television coverage.

Mr. Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, shot Mr. Martin on Feb. 26, 2012, claiming self-defense after he said the teenager knocked him to the ground and hit his head against the sidewalk. Prosecutors had argued that Mr. Zimmerman instigated the confrontation by assuming the youth had no place in the gated Sanford community and was up to no good and then following him against the express advice of police. Mr. Martin, who was unarmed, was walking back to his father’s home after going to a store for candy and a soft drink.

Never a simple homicide, Mr. Martin’s death became the subject of a charged debate about race, criminal profiling and Florida’s

permissive “stand your ground” gun law. Despite the jury’s verdict, those issues are not likely to go away. One reason the death of this boy in a gray hooded sweatshirt so resonated – that even the president of the United States felt compelled to comment – was that it brought to the surface historic concerns of minority parents about the vulnerability of their sons.

The ineptness of Florida authorities in the initial investigation of this death validated that worry and deepened the distrust.

Unfortunately, though, much of the public debate has done grievous disservice to the legitimacy of these issues. Hucksters and political demagogues exploited tragedy – a boy’s death, a family’s grief, a man’s freedom – and created what has become the now all-too-familiar media circus of oversaturation and rush to judgment.

Mr. Zimmerman’s attorney called the prosecution “disgraceful.” But we think it was valuable that the case was aired in an open court before a fair-minded judge and decided by a jury that appeared to be careful and take its time. Guilt was not proved beyond a reasonable doubt, and Mr. Zimmerman is free to resume his life even as his attorney lamented that it “will never be the same.”

That also is as it should be. Mr. Zimmerman could have done what police told him to do and stayed in his vehicle. No one would have heard about him – and Trayvon Martin could have been able to get home on that rainy Sunday evening.

As you look beyond that, or as you drive through the Delnor property, you will notice the whole front entrance, parking lot and landscaping are completely gone or look changed. You will also notice a huge quantity of new landscape materials appear added to the rest of the property.

Why is this extremely expansive project taking place? Is this to improve patient care? Delnor has a very fine reputation for excellent patient care. What’s to improve?

what in the world IS going on?

There was great pride in the beautiful brick, pillared, greenroofed buildings and the lovely vista shown in many promotional pieces. Unfortunately, they have been destroyed. And to what purpose, at what cost and for what end?

Has anyone seen a drawing for

this project, either for the external layout or the internal redesign?

Not only the general public, but the employees and volunteers don’t know what’s going on. The details of the Affordable Care Act will become effective within the year. For all of us who are concerned about the projected increased costs of health care, why is money being extravagantly spent on the “bricks and mortar” by a nonprofit entity, instead of being budgeted and reserved to cover real health care costs?

If for no other reason than to curb the gossip regarding Cadence, the whole community would like answers to these very perplexing questions. Also, what has dictated the need for Cadence, itself, as another layer of administrative costs in relation to the ACA and reimbursed funding?

‘COOL EXPERIENCE’ Kaneland duo, Cardinals take on Team USA

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kaneland alumnus Drew Peters surveyed a Fifth Third Bank Ballpark clubhouse food spread Monday afternoon and smiled.

The lanky left-hander generously had scattered fresh fruit and pretzels around his plate, but the pregame sustenance only played a small role in his happiness.

For a few hours, Peters and the rest of the Crystal Lake Cardinals had overlapped in the good life of their opponents, the Team USA collegiate national team.

Two hours before first pitch, it was time let everything soak in.

“It’s just a really cool experience to be able to feel this treatment,” Peters said, “and hopefully work harder so that eventually, we can be at this level.”

Team USA returned from a six-day tour of Japan last week. On Thursday, it opens a five-game series against counterparts from Cuba.

Call Monday’s 12-3 victory against

the Cardinals a tune-up for that event.

But still consider the Cardinals grateful for the chance, engineered in part by well-connected Cardinals coach Armie Bombino of Crystal Lake.

“Yeah, I mean, you’ve got to sometimes step back and see who you’re playing against, because you never know,” Cardinals third baseman Nick Richter said. “Especially when we’re this young.

I think it’s fun, and it’s something I can tell my kids or something down the line.”

Eight Cardinals will be part of the Metro Collegiate Baseball League of Illinois All-Star team that opposes Team USA at 1 p.m. today. The roster includes St. Charles East product Dan Ditusa of Seton Hall.

Pitchers certainly will have Team USA first baseman Sam Travis on their scouting report. The Providence alumnus and Indiana standout finished a home run short of the cycle while driving in three runs Monday.

Team USA smacked a pair of tworun homers in the second inning and

kick-started its offense again in the late innings.

“It was a good experience, playing in a minor league stadium,” said Team USA right fielder Bradley Zimmer, who played in a California summer league in 2012.

“I thought it played pretty true, pretty normal. Other than the flies in my face constantly, I thought it was pretty fun.”

In about five weeks, the Cardinals will disperse to their respective campuses, not unlike their counterparts from Team USA. The Cardinals, a collection of college and junior college players hailing largely from the north and west suburbs, play around the Chicago-area region.

Peters and fellow Kaneland product Bobby Thorson – teammates with the Knights’ 3A state champions in 2011 – both played for Elgin Community College this past season, forming the top of the team’s pitching rotation by the end of the spring.

said. “He’s very good. Our lefties were having some trouble with his curveball because it was coming right at their hips then moving right on over for strikes.”

Shimp allowed three hits over five innings. He walked three (all in the first inning) and struck out six.

“Kyle was a little wild,” Yorkville coach Scott Luken said. “In some cases, he was effectively wild. Unfortunately, a couple walks and a couple hit batsmen ended up hurting us.”

Shimp had to leave the game after Boehmer hit him in the head with a pitch in the top of the sixth. The ball appeared to hit Shimp near his left ear. He lay on the ground for several minutes afterward while Luken checked him for signs of a concussion. As a precautionary measure, a parent transported him to a nearby medical facility for further evaluation.

Boehmer did not allow the incident to rattle him. He retired the next four hitters in a row to earn a save. He struck out two, walked none, and did not allow a hit.

“He did a really nice job of keeping his composure,” Asquini noted. “All in all, I was really happy with the way we played. Defensively, we picked it up. Both those guys pitched very, very well and I thought offensively we had great approaches and at-bats.

We weren’t swinging at a lot of junk and stuff out of the zone. We made him work for his outs.”

ST. CHARLES – Adam Eck and Mike Boehmer combined to pitch a shutout and St. Charles East found a way to manufacture runs against a tough pitcher Monday.

The Saints opened the Phil Lawler Summer Classic tournament with a 4-0 victory over Yorkville (10-17-1).

Eck (2-3) started the game on the mound for the Saints and did not allow a hit during the first four innings.

“He was wonderful. His last four starts have been great,” East coach Len Asquini said. “[He was] just ahead of the count on everybody, forcing them to hit his pitch.”

Eck, a senior left-hander, allowed only a pair of singles in five innings of work. He walked three and struck out seven.

“I had a lot of rest coming into this [game],” Eck said.

“My arm felt good. I was able to throw strikes most of the time. I had confidence in my defense.”

Yorkville starter Kyle Shimp, also a southpaw, didn’t allow a hit until Erik Anderson led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a hit to right.

“He had a lot of movement on his pitches,” Anderson said. “He had a good curve coming into a lot of our lefty hitters. It was nice because we had a good long hitting session before the game that helped me a lot.”

Anderson had a pair of hits and also drove in East’s first run of the game with a first-inning sacrifice fly to center after the Saints (15-13-1) loaded the bases on a pair of walks and an error.

East added three insurance runs in the fifth with singles

MacKenzie not lax about all-star excitement QUICK READ Kevin Druley Apparently, Cameron MacKenzie’s friends awaited his close-up almost as much as he did.

Saturday night’s telecast of the Major League Lacrosse All-Star game proved as much. Just ask MacKenzie’s various social media feeds.

Watching the game from the sideline as part of a fan contest that made him captain of one of the two teams, MacKenzie, a St. Charles North senior, still is flattered at the influx of feedback from his pals who tuned into ESPN2.

“Basically the whole weekend, everyone was just checking up, especially when the game was going on,” MacKenzie said.

Cameron “It’s always MacKenzie nice to have the support of my friends and stuff, and just a great group of people backing me up.”

MacKenzie could be spotted on TV numerous times, most prominently when the Team Eclipse players he selected in Friday’s draft scored goals. Team Supernova – captained by Connecticut high-schooler Frank Ranfone – tallied a 24-15 victory, but the result hardly fazed MacKenzie.

From the time he and his parents, Scott and Kim, arrived in Charlotte, N.C., on Friday to their departure Sunday morning, MacKenzie basked in every moment.

One of his favorites actually happened several times.

MacKenzie, a wide receiver for the North football team in addition to being a lacrosse midfielder, taped the game and got a jump-start on reliving the weekend. He is set to be featured during halftime of an upcoming MLL telecast on CBS Sports Network.

“I think it was a great experience. I don’t think it could have went any better, except maybe winning,” he said.

“But it wasn’t about the win or the loss, it was about being on the field with some of the best players in the world.”

The extra Twitter and Instagram followers? Just an occupational hazard.

Rise and nine: Today’s

meeting of the St. Charles Women’s Golf League figures to be just as laid back as this past Tuesday’s nine holes.

The city’s women’s tournament might have been contested then, but several players didn’t know until

being told as they left the pro shop.

“I wanted to practice and have a reason to go and practice every single week. And also to hang out with other women and golf,” first-year participant Allison Johnsen said. “Because I usually golf with men and [laughs] it’s different.

“I’m very casual. I’m not competitive with regard to golf.”

She’s not alone in that approach. While players talk openly about improving week-to-week and year-toyear, there was nary a groan of self-admonishment during the women’s tourney, which was incorporated into the league schedule for the second successive summer.

This week’s heat wave brings a new challenge, however.

“We’ve been so lucky on Tuesdays,” league member Roberta Wright said. “It’s been nicer, so we’ve been lucky.”

BATAVIA – Many of the runners were well-acquainted with their competitors in Saturday’s Windmill Whirl 5K race – not because of previous events, but because many of the entrants were related.

Several families ran the race together or the children ran in the Youth 1-Mile Run held earlier in the day, while the parents competed in the 5K event as part of the Windmill City Festival.

“Isn’t that so great?” race director Rachel Schmitt said.

“I feel that happened because we hosted the youth mile and that gave the opportunity for everyone to come out as a family and enjoy the event.”

Colin Young, a former Naperville resident, took top honors for male runners, completing the 5K course in 17:01.76.

Twelve-year-old Daphne Kolody, who lives in Batavia, came in first among female runners with a time of 20:32.21.

“I did this race a year ago.

Last year, I got 27 minutes and this year I got 20 minutes,” Kolody said. “I think the swimming and the soccer that I have been doing really helped improve my time.”

Awards were given to the top three overall winners and the top three runners in various age divisions.

Four members of the Kelly family were among the 112

runners in the 5K race: Paul, his wife, Jessica, and their two sons – Conor, 10, and Liam, 8.

“It was mom’s idea,” Paul said. “She was going to bring them to the race and I weaseled my way in. We run as a hobby.”

Conor was the first member of the Batavia family to cross the finish line, earning him fourth place in the 1 to 14 male category, clocking in at 25:58.77. Paul finished less than a second ahead of Liam and earned second place in the 35 through 39 male division with a time of 27:26.44. Although Jessica was last of the family to finish, her time of 27:56.54 earned first place in the 35 through 39 female category.

The Silbernagels of St. Charles were another family that competed in the races.

“I just watched my niece and nephew [in the Youth 1-mile]. They both did real well,” Matt Silbernagel said as he cheered his brother, Adam, on during the 5K race. “Kevin got second overall and Brooke was fourth in her age group [7-9 females].”

Adam Silbernagel finished fifth overall and first in the 4044 male divison.

Dave Ginsburg (18:41.53) and Brandon Johnson (19:06.45) finished second and third among the male runners.

Elizabeth Ott (21:23.03) took second place in the women’s division and Christina Marotta (21:41.69) took third.

Still, there’s one interval Geneva coach Rob Wicinski truly values, and it doesn’t take him long to strum his beard and point it out.

Quarterbacks are supposed to release the ball within four seconds, so whenever Wicinski saw a Vikings defensive back or linebacker hold coverage in Saturday’s 7-on-7 at Aurora Central Catholic, he nodded approvingly and stuck the data in his cap.

Er, visor.

“Our offense can go out and throw, play pitch and catch any time on air,” Wicinski said. “It’s the defense. If you can find a kid that can cover out here ... he’s going to be able to do it in the game when there’s not quite as much time.”

Closing the gap – on four seconds and on the quarterback in the pocket – starts up front with linemen such as Vikings senior defensive end Billy Douds.

Although Saturday’s open offensive format kept Douds from rushing the passer or brushing up against any opposing offensive linemen, he saw the day as an opportunity to progress in his agility and reads.

on this day shared the ACC campus with schools such as four-time defending Class 5A champion Montini, Wheaton North and Geneva.

Casey called that group among the “flag-bearers, if you will, of success,” and later added this about the event: “We cover the spectrum in terms of size and location.”

The Chargers did so for five hours – well more than four seconds. Now that’s some ‘D’ to write home about.

Thorson out with ACL injury • BASEBALL Continued from page 14 Thorson – a junior who has signed with NCAA Division I Campbell after two seasons at ECC – was having a strong summer with the Cardinals before suffering a likely ACL tear in a game over the weekend.

Thorson, who is due for an MRI this week, said a doctor told

him he is 95 percent sure Thorson tore his left ACL while trying to beat out a grounder.

“It’s pretty saddening. I mean, it’s the first time I’ve really been injured my whole life,” Thorson said. “Pretty bummed, but trying to keep my head up.

Trying to get through this as quick as possible.”

Savoring the night was another story.

Although Thorson was out of

the lineup and Peters had just thrown 80 pitches in an outing Saturday, the Cardinals’ Kaneland contingent still felt plenty connected.

“I’ve learned a lot from Bob, obviously. I’ve played with him my whole life. It’s a great experience,” Peters said. “Now next year [at ECC], I’m going in hoping to be our leader. Hoping to be No. 1. Just developing, getting some strength and lifting.”

But in past centuries the table might have held a candlestick with a handle to carry to the bedroom for light. It also had to store items that acted as the toilets of the day. The potty, a large round but squat bowl, served as the toilet seat. A large, tall bowl with a cover was used to hold waste until morning. Covered sections of the table held and hid everything, so the bedside “table” really was a commode. But only the wealthy and royalty had such luxurious equipment. Most people had an outhouse near the back of the yard.

The flush toilet is older than most people think. Leonardo da Vinci designed a flush toilet, but it was never made and people thought the idea was as ridiculous as another one of his ideas, the airplane. The first flushing toilet was made by Sir John Harrington for the Queen of England in 1596. It was improved in 1775 by Alexander Cummings, and soon the “water closet” made of porcelain was installed in homes in a special room. Although they’re no longer needed, antique commodes still sell well and are used as bedside tables with storage for books. They can be found in many styles. The drawer-table combination is useful and copies ignore original use. *** Q: I have a battery-operated toy called “McGregor.” It’s an old man wearing a plaid coat and tam, smoking a cigar and holding a cane.

A: Jimmy Hoffa, born in Indiana in 1913, became an organizer for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters in 1932. He was the union’s president from 1958 to 1971, but was convicted of racketeering in 1964 and was sent to prison in 1967. As part of a plea agreement, he was released in 1971, nine years early, but was barred from taking part in union activities. He disappeared outside a suburban Detroit restaurant in 1975 and was declared dead in 1983. His body has never been found. Your lighter was one of many that the union had made as gifts, so it’s not rare and it was never used

More Content Now We’ve all seen plenty of horror films about things that go bump in the night. There’s plenty of that going on in this truly creepy, based-on-fact item. The problem with “The Conjuring,” only for those of you who don’t have nerves of steel, is that things here also go bump in the daytime, and indoors, and outdoors.

This is a movie about demons, ghosts, witches, whatever you want to call them. It follows the Perron family – mom, dad, five daughters, dog – who move to an isolated old house (one which, in the finest of red flag warnings, Daisy the dog won’t enter), are overjoyed when they discover a boarded-up cellar, then start witnessing and hearing the oddest of experiences.

There are distant (and close-up) knocking sounds; every clock in the place stops at the same time every night; mom starts finding mysterious bruises on her body; one of the girls, almost asleep, tells her sister, over in the next bed, to “stop grabbing my foot!” even though her sister and that bed are nowhere near her.

Plenty of time is spent in this house, where things keep going badly for these nice people, and those same things make for a very scary viewing experience. There’s an interesting juncture in the film where, due to some perfectly placed shockeroos, characters in the screen and people in the audience are screaming at the same time, at the same volume.

But in a terrific example of a script maintaining a certain balance, the film is just as much about a different family – the Warrens – a pair of demonologists who are called in by the frightened Perrons to help them deal with whatever supernatural business is going on.

Directed by James Wan, who has scared the bejeebers out of us before with the gory “Saw” and the suspenseful “Insidious,” this film goes a different route in delivering the shivers.

It’s practically bloodless, and depends instead on restless, constantly moving cameras as well as loud noises, quick, horrific visuals, and suggestions of rancid smells that, one of the Warrens explains, could be a sign of demonic

Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) is a clairvoyant. Ed Warren (Patrick Wilson) is a paranormal investigator with some religious training. Their teamwork brings them onto the lecture circuit and into homes where, as in this one, “a dark entity has latched on to the family, and the house needs an exorcism.”

The Perron story, we’re told, took place in Rhode Island in 1971. Roger Perron (Ron Livingston) was at wit’s end in trying to protect his family, but it was his wife, Carolyn (Lili Taylor), who finally reached out to the War-

rens, who did this kind of work often, and usually found rational explanations for their cases.

Not this time! They realize it as soon as they walk in the door. We realize it as soon as they start giving each other silent, knowing looks. James Wan fills the film with neat moments: Little Cindy is sleepwalking (again), and the scene is accompanied by the great Santo & Johnny song “Sleep Walk” on the soundtrack. Young April chats on and on with her new friend Rory, but there’s nobody in the room with her. Carolyn, playing a game with her kids, approaches a closet blindfolded (not a good idea).

Near the end, a lot of truly frightening things are going on all over the place, culminating in one intense exorcism.

This is great fun to watch with an audience that enjoys this kind of thing. But anyone doing so will also probably stay out of dark rooms for a while.

Woman needs courage to end man’s future plans Girl has trouble sleeping Dear Abby: I am a divorcee with college-aged children. I love my children, and I thought I loved my ex. However, after my divorce I wonder if I’m capable of loving anyone other than my children again.

Two years after the divorce I started a relationship with a man who is 10 years older. He had recently ended a long-term relationship. I wasn’t particularly drawn to him, but he was very persistent.

We finally, jokingly, agreed to be “exclusively casual” and began dating. My children don’t dislike him; they are indifferent to him.

We have been dating for six years. I do not love him. He, however, professes to adore me and wants us to spend our lives together. I do NOT want this to go on any longer. I have some serious health issues and I’m not interested in having him as my caretaker.

Promising discovery could lead to new diabetes treatment Dear Doctor K: I have diabetes.

I read that scientists had made a major discovery about how people with diabetes could naturally make more insulin. How excited should I be about this?

Dear Reader: I believe you are referring to a discovery by the laboratory of a colleague here at Harvard, Dr. Douglas Melton. It’s a great story.

About 20 years ago, Dr. Melton was a young scientist who was studying the basic biology of how cells work. He wasn’t focusing on any particular disease. Then his infant son developed severe Type 1 diabetes.

That’s a disease in which the body’s immune system attacks the pancreas, a spongy little organ inside the abdomen. The attack destroys the pancreas cells that produce insulin, called beta cells. As a result, the body does not have enough insulin, the hormone that directs blood sugar – our body’s main source of energy – into our cells. Sugar levels rise in the blood, and the body’s cells don’t get enough energy.

Prompted by his son’s illness, Dr. Melton turned the focus of his scientific work to trying to cure diabetes. First, he and other

The old cells could divide, forming young beta cells. The bad news: The pancreas didn’t seem able to produce new beta cells in nearly sufficient amounts to make up for the cells killed by diabetes.

Undiscouraged, Dr. Melton reasoned that if older beta cells could be prompted to make new young beta cells – in any amount – then the body probably had chemical signals that drove the process. He began to search for them.

In early May 2013, Dr. Melton reported in the prestigious scientific journal Cell that his research team had indeed found such a chemical signal, a hormone, in mice. The hormone is made in the liver and in fat, and travels through the blood to the pancreas. It is able to coax an old, burned-out pancreas to make

lots of new young beta cells. In mice with diabetes, the treatment caused a dramatic improvement in blood sugar. Dr. Melton named the hormone that he discovered betatrophin.

It will, of course, take much more research in mice and then in humans to determine if this newly discovered hormone can serve as a treatment for human diabetes. So, to answer your question, it’s too soon to get excited.

Still, this is just the latest example of an even larger scientific discovery that has played out over the past 20 years. The human body has much greater power to repair itself naturally than we once imagined. Scientists just need to discover a few tricks to help stimulate the body’s own natural healing, as in this case.

To transform this important discovery into a new treatment for diabetes we need more medical research. Encourage your members of Congress to push for more funding.

Dear Suzanne: Dr. Edmund Jacobson, a psychologist and an expert on sleep disorders, offers the following tips for people having trouble falling and staying asleep: • Try to go to bed at the same time every night. Have a regular bedtime routine, such as closing the blinds or drapes, laying out the clothes for the next day and preparing yourself for bed (shower, brush teeth, etc.). Perform these tasks in exactly the same order every night.

Once it’s a habit, it will trigger a sleep response.

• Never read, write or eat in bed. Any activity other than sleep that you associate with being in bed will aggravate insomnia.

• If you like a fast game of racquetball, play it in the morning or afternoon. Overstimulation late in the day may sabotage your slumber.

On the other hand, a good workout early in the day will help you feel tired enough to fall asleep at night.

Sometimes declarer can work out what to do just by analyzing the opening lead.

In this example, how should South play in three no-trump after West leads a fourth-highest spade five?

This is surely the most common two-bid auction. It is true that on this deal, three notrump can be defeated if West is inspired enough to lead a heart, and five diamonds can always be made with a good guess in the trump suit. But if you try to get to five of a minor with two balanced hands opposite each other, you will be a big loser in the long run. Go for the ninetrick game unless you are sure it cannot make.

South starts with seven top tricks: two spades, two diamonds and three clubs. And if the diamonds run, there is an overtrick waiting in the wings. But if the diamonds are 3-0, who has the tripleton?

Read West’s lead. How many spades did he start with?

Since South can see the two, three and four, West must have led from exactly a four-card suit.

And if he is void in diamonds, he must have at least five hearts or five clubs and surely would have led from that suit – length rules in no-trump. So only East can be void in diamonds.

Declarer should take the first trick and cash the diamond ace.
