What brings you here? I did the production last year, and I did it on violin, not viola. One of the directors here recommended me for it.

Are you going to college? I think I’m going to Waubonsee next year.

What will you major in? Music education and math education What was your first job? When I was younger, I was paid to perform at a wedding. I did that for one summer. I did a bunch of weddings.

How old were you? I was 15 and 16.

What instruments do you play?

I play violin. I taught myself viola, then cello and upright bass. Now I’m teaching myself piano, guitar and guitar bass.

How old were you when you

started? I started learning violin in fourth grade.

What do you want to be when grow up? I always have and wanted to be a music teacher/performer. I love to teach music and keep it in my life, and I also like to do productions like this or weddings.

What is an interesting factoid about yourself? I was the only senior in my high school to take both orchestras at the same time. And I was the first student to take AP [calculus] and AP statistics at the same time.

Why were you the first? To take both orchestras and both AP math classes at the same time is difficult.

Where is the most interesting place you’ve played? In Florida. My school took a trip to Disney World. It was a monsoon while we were playing.

Why should people see “Joseph”?

It’s literally my favorite musical, ever.

I watched the show with Donny Osmond. It’s a little showy. I think it’ll be a great time, especially for families.

145th Kane County Fair opens today

T. CHARLES – The 145th annual Kane County Fair will open at 3 p.m. today with live music, carnival rides, family entertainment and exhibits at the Kane County Fairgrounds, 525 S. Randall Road, St. Charles.

The five-day event opens at noon Thursday, and will open at noon each remaining day through Sunday.

Kane County Fair Board President Larry Breon said the 40-acre fairgrounds will feature some of the same attractions – such as the carnival, 4-H exhibits and racing pigs – as previous years, but it also will feature new activities such as electronic games that can be played for free.

“Obviously, not a lot of things last that long in any form,” Breon, of Batavia, said of the fair. “It’s just one of [the] things that is ongoing.

Somebody has always kept the ball moving down the court.”

Breon said the 12-member board will plan something commemorative for the 150th year of the fair.

“What I try to do and other board members do is immediately after the fair is over, we look at what was done – how it worked, did people enjoy it, was it successful, was it not successful – and then figure out why some are very good ideas,” Breon said.

“The fair is a weather-driven production. If the weather is terrible, it does not matter what you do, and it won’t be very successful.”

With newly remodeled buildings that are air-conditioned, Breon said the fair is more attractive.

“Before, we had two seasons – mud and dust – and now we don’t have either,” Breon said. “It’s more of a parklike setting, we have blacktop and grass. It’s just a much more beautiful place.”

County fairs historically were a place where agriculture could be displayed, back when a region’s economy was based on agriculture, Breon said.

“Generally, young rural people were involved in 4-H,

which was run by the land grant university and administered by the University of Illinois Cooperative Extension,” Breon said. “It used to be just animals, homemaking, dressmaking and cooking. Now it’s expanded into science, rocketry, computer science, entomology and ornamental horticulture.”

Breon said the additions reflect necessary changes in order to adapt and be current.

“You have got to adjust. I always said, ‘The dinosaur did not adjust.’ We try to maintain some of the basics that we can, have young people bring actual livestock to the fair … so children can watch cows being milked. It’s important they know milk does not come from Jewel, it comes from a cow,” Breon said. “But something new this year is electronic games in the atrium. It’s free and people can play them. That is what a lot of people enjoy in today’s world.”

Also new this year is a collection for food pantries – today and Thursday fairgoers can get $1 off the $5 entrance price for one nonperishable food item or $2 off for two nonperishable food items.

Breon said Friday through Sunday’s entrance price is $8, but fairgoers can go online and print out a $2-off coupon and get in for $6.

“It’s economically sound for people to bring the family out,” Breon said.

dents in the 1980s remembered their campus as the old Carson Pirie Scott department store. Students in the 1990s met a college that was just beginning to realize the power of computers and technology to revolutionize teaching, learning and research.

In those early, heady days of the Internet, we bandied about terms such as the “information superhighway,” used a dial-up modem in the library to search the Internet with a text-based program called Gopher, puzzled over how email could possibly be useful and marveled at a strange new application called the World Wide Web. In the 2000s, some students knew Waubonsee only through their computers as they pursued online degrees on their own time at home, while students at the Sugar Grove Campus became familiar with construction trailers as new buildings sprouted to supplant outdated facilities.

Today’s students recognize a Waubonsee that spans four physical campuses and an online virtual campus, smoothly integrates technology into the classroom and campus life and provides myriad paths to success for transfer, career, adult education and lifelong-learning students.

As I softly closed the door to my office for the last time,

I thought with a bit of regret about how the college that I knew so well would change, would find its answers in the future, would present a different vision to the next occupant of my office.

But I consoled myself with one immutable fact – whether I am an employee, a student (will I finally have the time to take a Zumba class?) or a community member, Waubonsee will always be my college.

And with its deep, unchanging commitment to the students and community it serves, whatever decade you experience Waubonsee, it will always be your college, too.

The free event will include traditional birthday party food staples such as hot dogs, cake and lemonade, and will feature activities for children, including a magic show and balloon animals.

The library was launched in 1963, the effort of a group of village residents. In 1998, the library became a public library district.

The library has been located in the Maple Park Community Center since 1970. It boasts about 900 cardholders and is open 30 hours a week.

Martin said the library has sought to improve its physical location and range of services.

She noted that the library recently renovated one of its three rooms with new shelving, floors and paint.

And the library also seeks to keep its residents aware of the breadth of the holdings available to them through the library’s affiliation with the PrairieCat online library catalog system and through e-books.

The American anthropologist Ruth Benedict wrote that “we grow in time to trust the future for our answers,” and nowhere is the truth of those words more apparent than in the dynamic field of higher education.

As an institution that demands quality, relevance and value for its students, Waubonsee Community College faces strategically forward, courts innovation, keeps its finger firmly on the pulse of the community and embraces change.

In my 28 years of employment in at least six different roles at Waubonsee, I, too, focused my vision on the future and welcomed the progress that is the lifeblood of the college.

But when I recently retired from the college and cleaned out my office, I indulged in a wistful look backward. I contemplated my own memories of the college and reflected on how each generation experiences a different Waubonsee.

The college’s original students in the 1960s knew Waubonsee first as a makeshift campus in a converted supermarket in Aurora, and later as a countryside campus that housed its president in the old Huntoon stable.

Adult education students in the 1970s knew the college as an infrastructure-challenged (the roof leaked, the plumbing malfunctioned regularly and the lights sometimes flickered) rented school on Farnsworth Avenue in Aurora.

NEIL KENNETH OLSON Died: July 15, 2013 GENEVA – Neil Kenneth Olson, 81, of Geneva, passed away early Monday morning. Neil was born in St. Charles in 1932, the son of Arnold and Mildred Olson. He grew up there and attended St. Charles High School, graduating in the Class of 1950.

Soon after, Neil joined the U.S. Air Force, where he continued his love of music, playing trombone in the band. He held on to this interest throughout the remainder of his life, adding the string bass and electric bass to his repertoire. Neil played in many bands and orchestras.

His military service allowed Neil to attend Northern Illinois University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in business and later returned to obtain a master’s degree in business administration.

After completing his education, Neil worked at several different companies, successfully honing and applying his skills in the business world. Most notably, he worked for Fermilab and the city of Batavia, from which he retired after many years of work.

In 1966, Neil fell in love and married Barbara Johnson. Shortly after, Neil and Barb established a home in Geneva where Neil was to spend the remainder of his life.

Over the years, their family grew with the addition of a daughter and two sons.

He was a lifelong member of

Bethlehem Lutheran Church in St. Charles. Over the years, Neil stayed active in several organizations.

He was most proud of his 50-year membership with the American Legion, being an active member of American Legion Post 75 in Geneva.

Neil was extremely proud of his Swedish heritage, displaying this as a member of Vasa Park and Viljan Lodge 349.

Neil had a diverse array of interests that included a love of owning and maintaining an antique vehicle, which he showcased in many a local parade and toured as a member of the Dairyland Region Plymouth Club. Neil also kept busy maintaining a second residence in Wisconsin, in which he enjoyed many a vacation with family and friends.

Neil will be remembered for his quick wit and dry humor, always chiding friends and family. He was also a lover of local history and always had a story to share of bygone days.

Neil was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Mildred Olson; and one brother, Donald Lloyd Olson; and is survived by his wife of 40-plus years, Barbara; and three children, Eric, Inger and Peter.

The visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, at Yurs Funeral Home of St. Charles. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 18, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in St. Charles. Burial will be in Union Cemetery in St. Charles.

N. Aurora to honor ex-trustee

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – Max Herwig, a longtime North Aurora village trustee, will be honored next month as part of the North Aurora Days festival.

North Aurora village trustees Monday approved a proclamation declaring Aug. 2 to be Max Herwig Day in the village.

Herwig, of North Aurora, Max Herwig died suddenly June 4 at Edward Hospital in Naperville.

He was 67.

North Aurora Days kicks off Aug. 2 and will run through Aug. 4. Herwig was chairman of the North Aurora Days Committee for many years. The committee is in charge of organizing the summer festival.

North Aurora Village Trustee Mark Gaffino, who served with Herwig on the board, said the honor was fitting. Gaffino has been the North Aurora Days Committee chairman for the past few years.

“He did a great job,” Gaffino said. “It will be different without him being there.”

North Aurora Days is put on by volunteers. This year, about 100 volunteers are helping put on the festival, Gaffino said. More information about the festival is available at www.northauroradays.com.

Herwig’s family will be presented Aug. 2 with a plaque honoring him.

GENEVA – The funeral service for Percy Raymond Chesley, 90, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 19, at Malone Funeral Home, 324 E. State St. (Route 38), Geneva, with the Rev. Born Aug. 30, 1922, in Lee Center, the son of Benjamin Franklin and Minnie Louise (nee Ebert) Chesley, he went home to the Lord on Tuesday, July 16, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He married Doris J. Thomas at United Methodist Church of Geneva on Dec. 21, 1945, and they lovingly raised five children.

Percy served his country with honor from 1942 to 1945 in the armed forces during World War II, overseas in Europe and North Africa. Upon arrival home, he met the woman who would become everything he adored: his wife of nearly 64 years, Doris.

Percy and Doris were inseparable and volunteered much time and energy at the Batavia Moose Lodge.

Percy was able to continue to visit his “gang” on Friday nights at the Moose. He also enjoyed every moment with friends and family.

Percy provided for his family while employed at Ben & Lou’s Garage as a mechanic from 1945 to 1971.

He then became employed by the city of Geneva and retired as the superintendent of streets and walks in 1986.

Upon the loss of his beloved wife, Percy spent weeks at a time in Texas enjoying and adoring the love of Doris’ siblings, nieces and nephews.

Percy was a friend to all, always providing a nod and smile, opening his heart and home to company. He had not only a full and generous but also an extremely remarkable life.

To know him was truly to love him.

Percy was a member of American Legion Post 75, VFW Post 1197 and Moose Lodge 682.

Dogs from Ala. fostered in county

bschory@shawmedia.com ELBURN – They call her Bambi, a tiny brown puppy with fawnlike speckling on her back, rescued from an animal shelter in Alabama as she faced euthanization.

“We think she’s part whippet,” said Kathy Schweisthal of Casey’s Safe Haven, a horse and pony rescue group that added a dog rescue in 2011. “She looks like a fawn, so her name is Bambi.”

Schweisthal and Gaye Masnjak handle the dog rescue side of the nonprofit organization.

Bambi was emaciated, weighing 9.5 pounds when she should have weighed 22 pounds, according to the vet.

The 8-month-old puppy could barely walk. She gained two pounds in five days under Schweisthal’s care, but still had trouble walking.

They first thought she had a dislocated hip, but X-rays showed her right back leg was actually fractured in three places and had not been treated in at least two

“They not only starved her, but left her to suffer with a broken bone leg,” Schweisthal said.

Orthopedic surgery to repair her leg cost $1,500, even at a discount, and she will recuperate for six to eight weeks, Schweisthal said.

Bambi and 19 other dogs came from a shelter in Alabama to foster homes in Kane County because Don and Jennifer Likeum of Elburn drove 11 hours to Alabama over the Fourth of July holiday to collect the dogs for Casey’s Safe Haven volunteers to foster for adoption.

“I don’t think I could ever ask for a better partnership,” Schweisthal said. “There is nothing Jen and Don won’t do. Meeting these people and having them join our family was an absolute blessing.”

Jennifer Likeum said they were glad to help. She said she’s been fostering dogs since February, and three new additions are 8-weekold puppies, shepherd mixes that they brought back from Alabama – Tyler, Troy and

Teddy.

“Kathy had just seen this photo of a mom and babies down there,” Likeum said.

“I looked at this picture and I said, ‘I want to go to Alabama. When are we leaving?’

My husband and I went on Thursday and came back Friday. It was a last-minute kind of thing.”

Schweisthal said the rescue took coordination because the Alabama shelter euthanizes every Wednesday. A local veterinarian boarded the 20 dogs for two nights so the Likeums could collect them and bring them to Illinois.

Casey’s Safe Haven selects pets from the Alabama shelter – and another in Arkansas – after looking at them online.

Schweisthal said dog lovers should not be angry at shelters that run out of room – they should reserve their ire for irresponsible pet owners.

“Once they know you are legitimately a rescue, they let you start tagging dogs to rescue,” Schweisthal said.

The combination of high temperature and humidity recently have put the heat index at 100 degrees or more, according to the National Weather Service. A heat index measures how hot it feels when relative humidity is added to the actual air temperature.

Kane County Coroner Rob Russell and the American Red Cross are asking that people be diligent about staying hydrated – by drinking water and other fluids – and staying out of the heat for extended periods of time.

Infants, the elderly and those who work outside are the most susceptible to heat-related illnesses, espe-

cially heatstroke. Those with chronic illnesses also are considered high-risk, according to a news release.

Russell and the Red Cross also are urging people to follow tips on staying safe in high temperatures, especially never leaving children or pets inside a car.

Other heat safety tips include wearing loose-fitting, light-colored clothing; staying indoors; avoiding strenuous exercise; and postponing

outdoor activities.

Also, people are urged to use a buddy system when working in excessive heat.

People should take frequent breaks and check on those who do not have air conditioning.

Those without air conditioning should get relief by going to libraries, theaters, malls and other cool, public places, officials recommend.

Excessive heat can lead to heat exhaustion and heat-

stroke. Symptoms of heat exhaustion are cool, moist, pale or flushed skin, heavy sweating, headache, nausea, dizziness and weakness. Someone with those symptoms should be moved to a cooler place, have their clothing loosened, and be sprayed with water or have cool, wet cloths or towels applied. If the person refuses water, vomits or begins to lose consciousness, 911 should be called.

Heatstroke symptoms, which occur after heat exhaustion, include hot, red skin, headache, dizziness and confusion, vomiting, high body temperature exceeding 103 degrees, fast pulse, seizures and unconsciousness.

A call to 911 should be immediately placed if someone shows signs of heatstroke.

While waiting, the ill person should be moved to a cooler place, doused or sprayed with cold water, or covered with cold, wet towels or bags of ice.

8LOCAL BRIEFS West Nile virus seen in Kane County mosquitoes A batch of mosquitoes collected near Algonquin has tested positive for the West Nile virus, making it the first evidence of the disease in Kane County this year, the Kane County Health Department announced Tuesday.

The mosquitoes were collected in a trap administered by the Illinois Department of Public Health. The health department also is collecting dead birds to be sent to the state lab for testing. Call 630-444-3040 to report the presence of freshly dead birds, such as crows or blue jays, to determine whether West Nile virus testing is recommended. The birds must not show any signs of decay or trauma.

The first evidence of West Nile is usually seen in July or August. Seventeen other Illinois counties have seen birds or mosquitoes test positive so far this year, according to a news release.

Last year, Kane County had 13 human cases of the illness, the release states.

Women veterans fair set for this week in Aurora AURORA – State Rep. Linda Chapa LaVia, D-Aurora, will co-host a women veterans fair from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Waubonsee Community College, 18 S. River St., Aurora.

The fair will be focused on bringing business, educational and networking opportunities to women veterans and their families. While the primary focus is women, all veterans are welcome. The event is free and open to the public.

Speakers will include representatives from the Illinois Departments of Veterans Affairs and Commerce and Economic Opportunity. Participating vendors will include the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Hines VA Hospital, AllenForce, DuPage and Kendall counties’ veterans assistance commissions, and Waubonsee Community College.

Enrollment has doubled each year since the Xcelerate program began, with about 500 signed up this year. Grier noted that doesn’t mean 500 different students have taken courses because some participate in more than one topic.

New courses this year include First Responders – Be a Hero, Horseback Riding Camp, Camp Oo-Koo-Lay-Lay (a ukulele camp), Kung Fu Camp, Fashion Diva Design – Pajama Party and Next Top Chefs Cooking Camp.

Those are in addition to courses that have proven popular in past years, including LEGO Robotics, Science Xplosion, Adventures in Movie Making and X-Tech Computer Camp. Camps offered for preschool-age children include courses on dinosaurs, kitchen science and outer space.

Grier said the program’s niche is science and technology, because there’s a lot of in-

terest in those topics and not many other summer programs offer courses on them.

“We capitalize on what we would think would be the strengths of the college,” he said. “We try to figure out what young people are interested in first of all, and what’s feasible to offer and what we have available on campus.”

Meyer said in Game Master, students start out by making a simple Minesweeper-like game, then move toward more complex games, such as a maze adventure and a game similar to Super Mario Brothers.

Students also learn basic programming commands.

“They’re pretty ecstatic.

They very much enjoy it,” Meyer said. “I feel like they are at an age where they’re not as interested in the conceptual types of things, but when they create a character and see them move, it creates awe factor for them.”

Corn Boil Bingo to aid SG groups

Three Sugar Grove organizations will host Corn Boil Bingo, which coincides with the annual Sugar Grove Corn Boil festival that runs from July 26 through 28. Bingo cards are $1, and half of the

proceeds from the winning pot go to the host organization, with the bingo winner taking the other half home.

Pat Graceffa, a volunteer who helps coordinate Corn Boil Bingo, said she expects between 100 and 200 people to play each day of the festival.

“We have a very, very nice turnout,” she said. “It’s a fun group.”

The game is only for those 18 and older, but children’s bingo is available at a separate tent for underage play-

ers.

Corn Boil Bingo runs from 5 to 10 p.m. July 26, benefitting the Sugar Grove Firefighters Auxiliary; from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. July 27, benefitting The Children’s Tumor Foundation; and from noon to 5 p.m.

Corn Boil Bingo will take place each day at Sugar Grove’s Volunteer Park, which is located behind John Shield’s Elementary School at 85 S. Main St.

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles Economic Development Director Chris Aiston plans to retire this month after more than 30 years in the public sector.

It’s a decision he said he’s been thinking about since last fall. Several factors influenced his decision, he said, such as turning 55 in June, knowing there would be turnover on the City Council and wanting to try something different.

The timing was good “to make a move in my career path,” he said, noting plans to establish a private consulting business.

His last day with St. Charles will be July 31.

City Administrator Brian Townsend said the city intends to fill Aiston’s position, as well as another open position in the Economic Development Department.

Michael Mertes, economic development coordinator, left this month for a job in another suburb.

Neither Townsend nor Mayor Ray Rogina has a timetable in mind to fill Ais-

ton’s position, they said.

Aiston joined the city in November 2009, following positions at Kane County, Geneva and DeKalb County.

Total, he has spent nearly 28 years in local government and – counting his three years of active duty with the U.S. Army Chris Aiston and four years in the National Guard – has worked in the public sector for more than 30 years, he said.

“Chris knew his discipline very well,” Rogina said.

Having an expert of Aiston’s caliber helped elevate the city’s operation “a great deal,” Townsend said. He said Aiston brought a fresh perspective to St. Charles and was responsible for a variety of projects and initiatives, including Restaurant Week and the Shop St. Charles Challenge.

“There’s a lot of things Chris has worked on here over the past year or two that we won’t realize the benefits from until he’s long gone,” Townsend said.

SUGAR GROVE – John Meyer said his students often surprise him when it comes to creating video games in the course he teaches through Waubonsee Community College’s Xcelerate summer program.

Students enrolled in the course, called Game Master, learn the ins and outs of video game production. Meyer said by the end of the weeklong course, students have created a video game they can actually play.

“Kids surprise me,” he said.

“They really do have a lot of pretty interesting suggestions.

The older ones are very creative, but much more introspective.”

For example, one of his students created a game where the goal was for Mike Ditka, former coach of the Chicago Bears, to knock out players from the Green Bay Packers.

Game Master is one of about 20 courses included in the Xcelerate program, otherwise known as summer enrichment camps. The program, which runs through August, is for kids ages 4 to 14.

New camps have emerged each year since the program’s inception four years ago, said Doug Grier, dean for community education at Waubonsee.

“It’s grown and evolved every year,” he said. “Last year was the first year for preschool camps, and then we added some topics, gradually increasing the number of camps overall.”

OPINIONS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Grateful for the help To the Editor: To the dispatcher who answered our call earlier this month, and to the animal control officer who followed up to help us, thank you so much for your support. We were shocked to discover three raccoons in one of our window wells, and the adult had chewed through the board that trimmed the window on the outside, desperately trying to claw its way to freedom. All three were probably as upset as our two cats and we were.

Serendipity and samples can fix Barnes & Noble

By VIRGINIA POSTREL Bloomberg News Turmoil at Barnes & Noble Inc., where CEO William Lynch resigned last week after the company posted an unexpectedly large loss in the quarter that ended April 30, has people in the publishing industry worried.

“We’re all forced to ask, ‘What would the book discovery environment look like without Barnes & Noble?’ ” writes Rich Fahle, a former Borders executive who runs a marketing agency for authors.

The question zeroes in on a growing problem for the U.S. book industry.

Although readers increasingly purchase books online, they still rely on physical bookstores to discover what to buy.

Online discovery – including everything from Twitter recommendations to authors’ Pinterest boards to Amazon pages – is growing, but it hasn’t kept up with online sales. People still seem more likely to buy books if they’ve had a chance to flip through physical copies.

Books are what economists call “experience goods.” You have to consume them before you know whether you like them.

That’s why people rely so much on trusted friends to recommend books, and it’s also why browsing is so important.

One big reason readers find it more satisfying to “showroom” in physical bookstores is that many publishers deliberately make it hard, if not impossible, to examine books online.

In a physical bookstore, the proprietor decides whether letting people read the books on display is likely to turn into sales. Most rule in favor of extensive browsing, allowing potential customers to stand, or in some cases sit, around for long periods reading their books.

On Amazon or Google Books, by contrast, the publishers rule, and too many seem determined to keep your dirty eyeballs off their merchandise. Although some works are relatively easy to look through, often you can’t even read the entire index or table of contents, much less actual prose, because publishers or authors are more concerned with would-be pirates than potential sales.

The other problem online is that even when you can see the whole book, you have

to know to look for it in the first place. You’re less likely to stumble on something interesting. The serendipity of a “new books” table or a bookstore science section is hard to replicate online. It requires a special mix of smart curation and easy browsing that, despite the best efforts of websites, is still easier to achieve in-person.

Bookstores make money by getting you to buy their merchandise – a business model that requires spending a lot on rent and inventory.

So here’s an idea for the publishing industry, Barnes & Noble or a tech-savvy retail entrepreneur – instead of fighting showrooming, embrace it.

Separate the discovery and atmospheric value of bookstores from the book-warehousing function.

Make them smaller, with the inventory limited to curated examination copies – one copy a title. (Publishers should be willing to supply such copies free, just as they do for potential reviewers.)

Charge for daily, monthly or annual memberships that entitle customers to hang out, browse the shelves, buy snacks and use the Wi-Fi. Give members an easy way to order books online, whether from a retail site or the publishers directly, without feeling guilty.

And give the place a good name. How about Serendipity Books?

Changes to police chief selection process vetoed

No further action was taken with the veto, but the Village Board may review the ordinance at its next meeting.

Tuesday’s Phil Lawler Summer Classic matchup between the St. Charles North baseball team and West Chicago provided no shortage of quirks, and the North Stars will be around to see what other surprises might be around the corner after advancing with a 7-6 win against the Wildcats.

North trailed, 6-5, before scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth. A two out, RBI single by senior Jack Dennis scored shortstop Hunter Buerster (one-out walk) to tie the game at 6, and the next batter – cleanup hitter Carson Schmitt – wheeled all the way to second base after striking out on a pitch in the dirt that bounded away from home plate, allowing John Legare to race home with the go-ahead score.

“You could call it a break,” North coach Todd Genke said. “I’m not so sure that’s the way you really want to win a ballgame, but we certainly want to take advantage of that when we can. We hustle all the time.”

The North Stars advance to face St. Charles East at 2:30 p.m. today at St. Charles East High School in a St. Charles Regional semifinal.

North’s Nos. 4 through 6 hitters – Schmitt, Jordan Bergren and Joe Kuczek – had hits in each of their first two at-bats, helping fatigue Wildcats righty Dave Kordik in the late innings.

“We were doing some catch-up baseball,” Kuczek said. “Taking pitches, grinding at-bats out, making him throw more pitches. That probably helped us win the ballgame at the end.”

Kordik wasn’t the only person to feel the effects of a steamy, summer afternoon on North’s diamond.

A lengthy delay took place after the fourth inning as the umpires fled the sun and re-hydrated.

When the game resumed, the home plate umpire switched spots with the field umpire, and traded in his trousers for a pair of shorts.

“I give him a lot of credit, I didn’t even think he was going to finish the game,” Genke said. “They made the plan to switch, which was a smart move.”

Fellow senior Frankie Farry was the winning pitcher, despite allowing the Wildcats to break a 5-all tie with a run in the top of the sixth. In the seventh, Farry overcame a two-out error by North that was followed by a Wildcats single to close the door.

Batavia bounces Crystal Lake South

By PATRICK MASON editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – The Batavia baseball team used timely hitting and two big innings to get out from under a back-andforth game against Crystal Lake South.

The No. 3 seeded Bulldogs ended the No. 11 Gators’ summer Tuesday afternoon after jumping ahead late and hanging on, 13-10, in the second round of the Phil Lawler Summer Classic.

After four lead changes in the first 3½ innings, the Bulldogs erupted for five runs in the fourth inning and then pushed across six more runs in the fifth to take a 13-7 lead, one they would not relinquish as Batavia’s pitching staff shut down the Gators’ offense the rest of the way aside from a two-out, three-run home run in the top of the seventh.

“The key was when we went up 13-7, because they are just going to keep hitting,” Batavia coach Matt Holm said.

“Our depth with our pitchers helped us out. We went into the day with the idea that we were going to throw four or five guys out of the bullpen and save one of our starters for [today].”

Reagan McReynolds drove

in three runs for Batavia (196) while Micah Coffey and Andrew Siegler each had two hits.

“We were hitting. It was a hitter’s day. … It was backand-forth, we had some scoring opportunities and we were able to take advantage of them, and we had some good two-out hitting as well,” Holm said.

“We feel really good about it.”

Added Batavia starting pitcher Jake Piechota: “It was really hot out today but we battled as a team and got it done. [Crystal Lake South] was a good team and had a good lineup but we just kept battling.”

Gators coach Brian Bogda called Batavia a “great team.”

“I’m proud of the way we battled and I suspected that Batavia would do pretty well, and they did,” he said. “I was proud of the way we responded when we were down and we didn’t hang our heads against a good team like that. Juggling baseball schedules a tricky proposition Forget about choosing baseball versus football or baseball versus basketball.

When it comes to summer sports conflicts, baseball versus baseball is hard enough for many area athletes.

As travel baseball programs continue to gain traction – some consider it a must for players who want to develop into varsity starters, let alone college prospects – high school programs are often becoming a casualty of the summer calendar squeeze.

Take St. Charles North, which won for the second straight day Tuesday in the Phil Lawler Summer Classic, minus arguably its top returning player, pitcher/first baseman Cory Wright. Wright maintains an extensive travel schedule with his summer traveling program, Elite Baseball.

North coach Todd Genke said he used to be upset when players missed time with the high school’s summer program to play travel ball, but the trend has grown so commonplace, his attitude has softened.

Genke would prefer being at full strength, but said top players’ absence helps

cultivate depth for the main, spring season.

“You get to see some of these guys step up, give them opportunities, and a lot of them are [taking advantage],” Genke said after the North Stars rallied past West Chicago on Tuesday, 7-6.

The reliever who recorded the final six outs of Tuesday’s win, Frankie Farry, won’t be available in today’s regional semifinal against St. Charles East or Thursday’s regional title game, if the North Stars make it that far.

Farry, who plays travel ball with the Top Tier travel program, planned to make a 10-hour drive today to compete in a tournament in Tennessee.

Farry badly wants to play college baseball, and thinks missing high school games like today’s are a necessary evil.

“I’m just trying to get as much exposure to try to get to the next level that I can,” Farry said. “High school’s good, high school’s fine, but my travel team really gets kids to the next level, so I’m just trying to get as much exposure as I can.”

Senior Joe Kuczek plays travel ball with the Express program but said he remains committed to summer ball with the North Stars. Kuczek said he’s usually able to fit in weekend travel tournaments around North’s weekday-intensive summer schedule but, if there is a conflict, he chooses the North Stars.

“I’d pick these guys [at North] any day just because I’ve been with them for four years,” Kuczek said.

Thinking ahead to the next four years can be a powerful lure, though. East coach Len Asquini believes families often have an unrealistic take on the upside of travel baseball.

“There are two good tournaments [that provide] good exposure – one in Atlanta, and the other one in Indianapolis,” Asquini said. “You’ve got to be in a top-tier program to get in those anyway. They don’t

Asquini makes a forceful case to Saints baseball players and their parents, letting it be known how high of a premium he places on having the whole team together during the summer for what he called “a ton of developing, a ton of teaching and a ton of camaraderie” that can’t be duplicated elsewhere.

“Last year was a problem,” Asquini said. “This year it’s a small issue, a small problem.

The Huskies’ Orange Bowl berth was a huge part of the momentum that Frazier talks about. There’s also the new Chessick Practice Center, which towers above the north end zone at Huskie Stadium, and is expected to be completed this fall. Huskie Stadium will also host the IHSA State Football Championships Thanksgiving weekend.

At Wisconsin, Frazier was the capital project/fundraising team member for Wiscosin’s $31 million hockey/ swim facility, $2.5 million golf facility, $3.5 million softball indoor practice center and $86 million student-athlete performance center.

Frazier called the Chessick Center a “game-changer” and a building which rivals those of any BCS program. He said there will be a plan when it comes to facilties after he takes over.

In terms of scheduling, Frazier said football is a sport that’s relationship-driven. He wants all of his programs to have a balanced schedule.

DeKALB – Sean Frazier doesn’t just want to make the Northern Illinois brand known regionally.

NIU’s new athletic director wants to make the Huskies recognized on a national level as well. However, Frazier said everything starts with getting the DeKalb community and all of the NIU alums in the Chicago area, involved in NIU athletics, which would be beneficial with things like attendance and fundraising.

Frazier was introduced at separate press conferences in DeKalb and Chicago on Tuesday and takes over for Jeff Compher, who left for East Carolina this past spring.

Frazier will begin his duties in August.

W h e n h e Sean Frazier was introducing NIU’s new AD, NIU President Douglas Baker even pointed out DeKalb Mayor John Rey, who was in attendance in the McCareins Auditorium at the Yordon Center.

“I think that shows the linkage we’re trying to make with our communities and the region,” Baker said. “I know athletics will play a key role.”

To Frazier, who has served as Wisconsin’s deputy director of athletics since 2011 and has worked in the Badgers athletic department since 2007, it’s a great time for the school to use last year’s football success as a springboard.

“The momentum that NIU has right now, the challenge now is to make sure we move and capitalize on that momentum,” said Frazier, the first African-American to serve as NIU’s athletic director. “We have 225,000 living alums, 8090 percent of them are in the Chicagoland area. We need to make sure they’re engaged, so they make sure what they have in this great university.

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles Post 342 pitcher Tony Landi stood on the mound at St. Charles North between innings Tuesday, holding a baseball and patiently waiting for catcher Ryan Thomas to arrive behind the plate to catch his warm-up tosses.

“Thanks for coming,” Landi said when Thomas finally emerged from the dugout.

“Huh?” Thomas responded, not initially getting the joke.

“Nice of you to join me out here,” Landi said.

It was around 90 degrees and the humidity made it feel much warmer, but Landi was a cool customer during Post 342’s 8-4 victory over Plainfield Post 1080 in the first round of the 11th District playoffs.

Of course, Landi could afford to be a little loose with his team giving him an 8-0 lead in the first three innings. Thomas was a big part of that offensive explosion, singling during a three-run first inning and hammering a double off Plainfield starter Tom Vashon (4-3) with the bases loaded in the second.

“He just elevated a fastball

and I was just looking to put it in the air and drive in a run,” Thomas said. “Fortunately, it got over [the left fielder’s] head and went to the wall.”

Landi (5-1) did not allow a run over the first six innings.

He ran into trouble with two outs in the seventh, giving up a two-run double to Johnathon Smith and walking in two runs.

“At the beginning, I was just kind of in the zone,” Landi said. “But then [the heat] started to get to me as the game wore on and that last inning I started to kind of leave my hips open and not throw as many strikes as I was before.”

Landi, who graduated from Geneva this year, yielded eight hits over 6⅔ innings. He walked five (four in the seventh) and struck out 10.

“My slider felt good because the humidity was making my fingers all sticky, so that was breaking harder than it usually does,” Landi said. “But I just depended on my fastball a lot.”

Ankur Shah got a ground ball to second with the bases loaded to end the seventh and went on to pitch a perfect eighth and ninth to earn the save.

‘Grown Ups 2’ goes down like nails

By DANA BARBUTO More Content Now Adam Sandler’s annual summer money grab is the unnecessary sequel “Grown Ups 2.” And, though it’s every bit as horrible as the first film, Sandler gets credit for knowing just what his fans want – crotch shots of guys in tight shorts and deer urinating profusely.

The audience I saw it with couldn’t get enough of the stale, sophomoric humor that left no bodily function untouched. In fact, the burp-snart (a burp-sneeze-fart combo) is one of the film’s running gags. You could make a drinking game out of it. I guess you need something like that when there’s no real plot.

In “Grown Ups 2” Sandler’s Lenny, a hotshot Hollywood agent in the first film, has moved his family from Los Angeles to the small East Coast town where he grew up to reunite with best buddies Chris Rock, David Spade and Kevin James. They’re all townies, residing in a fictional Massachusetts town, where all memories – and grudges – can be traced to kindergarten.

Each dude has to overcome some minor obstacle, such as Marcus (Spade) just found out he has a teenage son who comes to visit and the boy is an offthe-rails crazy oaf.

Lenny (Sandler) has a childhood bully to confront and a wife (Salma Hayak) who wants a fourth kid.

Eric (James) is afraid to jump off a high ledge in the local quarry and has to hide his close relationship with his mother (Georgia Engel) from his wife (Maria Bello).

In “Grown Ups 2” Adam Sandler’s Lenny, a hot-shot Hollywood agent in the first film, has moved his family from Los Angeles to the small East Coast town where he grew up to reunite with best buddies Chris Rock, David Spade and Kevin James.

Rock is just squandered.

The funniest guy in the whole ensemble has little to nothing to do. Ditto for “SNL” vet Maya Rudolph, another wasted opportunity. But not Shaquille O’Neal, who steals a few laughs as a large-and-in-charge local cop.

Back to that tulle-thin plot: A local college fraternity helmed by “Twilight” hottie Taylor Lautner threatens to wreak havoc on Sandler’s crew. It’s your classic townies vs. newcomers, youth vs. age clash. The climatic battle takes place at an ’80s-themed party at Lenny’s house.

Sandler – with screenwriters Fred Wolf and Tim Herlihy – try to inject some

heart into their script via showing the softer side of the guys as dads and how they tackle their issues from back in the day for the sake of setting good examples for their children.

None of that however, makes up for the imbecilic brand of comedy full of tired put-downs (bald guys, beware) and rote gross-out stuff (how much projectile vomit does one flick need?)

Over the past decade, Sandler has headlined some of cinema’s worst comedies – “That’s My Boy,” “Jack & Jill,” “Just Go With It,” and this latest gem is no exception. It’s as if he’s making movies to keep his friends employed.

Strength and power training essential to healthy aging Dear Doctor K: What’s the difference between strength training and power training? Do I need both?

Dear Reader: Before I make the distinction, let’s remember why strength and power training are important. Starting at about age 30, we start losing muscle mass.

That’s called “sarcopenia.” By the time we’re 70, we can expect to have lost about 25 percent of the muscle mass we had at age 30.

Right now, there’s little to nothing we can do about this, except to exercise.

Let’s start with strength training (sometimes called resistance training or weight training). Strength-training exercises build muscle by harnessing resistance against an opposing force. The resistance can come from your body, or from free weights, elasticized bands or specialized machines. Putting more than the usual amount of load on your muscles makes them stronger. Because the muscles being exercised are attached to underlying bone, these exercises strengthen bones as well.

You should do strength training on at least two nonconsecutive days each week. I alternate strength training with aerobic training, every other day.

Strength training isn’t just for those in search of buff bodies or bulked-up muscles. It also boosts the strength needed for daily tasks like walking a few blocks or climbing stairs. Just about any activity becomes easier with stronger muscles. Particularly after age 60, we are vulnerable to stumbling and falling if aging has robbed us of strength. As you climb stairs and your legs start to tire, for example, with your next step the toes of your foot might not quite clear the stair, causing you to stumble.

Power training is proving to be just as important as strength training in maintaining or restoring function. As the name suggests, power training is aimed at increasing power.

Power is a product of both strength and speed. Optimal power reflects how quickly you can exert force to produce the desired movement. Faced with a four-lane intersection, you

may have enough strength to walk across the street. But it’s power, not just strength, that can get you across all four lanes of traffic before the light changes.

Likewise, power can prevent falls by helping you react swiftly if you start to lose your balance.

As we age, muscle power fades even more swiftly than strength does. So exercises that can produce gains in power become especially important later in life.

Some power moves are strength-training exercises done at a faster speed. Others rely on the use of a weighted vest. You wear the vest while performing certain exercises that are aimed at improving functions such as bending, reaching, lifting and rising from a seated position.

My son was a bright student. While in the U.S. Navy, he studied and became a personnel man. After being discharged, he held good jobs with several good companies. He enjoyed his work very much.

My son had smoked since his early teens.

After a cough developed, he immediately quit smoking, but it was too late. He was diagnosed with lung cancer, and we lost him two months later. Everything was going his way. He had a wonderful job, a new home and a terrific family, and he was too young to die.

I sincerely hope my letter will convince young adults to be tobacco-free. Teens often feel that they are invincible, but they, too, are only flesh and blood and vulnerable to the destruction of tobacco.

Many bridge players would find out that the game isn’t as hard as they thought if they spent longer auditioning every auction, asking themselves what each call means.

In today’s deal, how should South plan the play in four spades? West leads the diamond ace, continues with the diamond king (East dropping the queen), and follows with the diamond jack.

When North entered the auction following an opposing pre-empt, he assumed that his partner had six or seven points.

Here, South had slightly more than that, so jumped to three spades. It was borderline, but he was assured of at least an eightcard fit and had three working honors.

Note also East’s play at trick one. If he had dropped the queen under his partner’s ace, that would have shown either a singleton or the queen and the jack.

The bidding marks West with six diamonds and East with two.

So if South ruffs the third diamond low in the dummy, surely East will overruff. And then declarer will also lose a club trick. Similarly, if South ruffs the third diamond high with dummy’s spade king, he will lose two diamonds, one spade and one club.

Instead, declarer should discard dummy’s automatic club loser. He wins the next trick (perhaps overruffing East if West perseveres with a fourth round of diamonds), draws trumps, and takes a safe club ruff in the dummy. His 10 tricks are five spades, two hearts, two clubs and the club ruff.
