OAK BROOK – Take away the flashy accessories and outlandish parties, and Paul Butler could have been the town’s Jay Gatsby of the 1920s with a soaring popularity, celebrity friends and a vision for what he wanted Oak Brook to be. While the roaring 20s brought an age of flappers, bootleggers, high-end fashion and an experiment called prohibition to the United States, the founder of Oak Brook lived a simple, quiet lifestyle, said Kathy Maher, president of the Oak Brook Historical Society. This quiet lifestyle allowed him to concentrate on two things: his vision for Oak Brook and the game of polo, which he would bring to the village in 1922. “He truly saw a planned community where people could work, and they could live and they could play all in this free-flowing area,” Maher said. “He loved to see people enjoy themselves and see people enjoy the land and obviously the sport.” Maher said Butler often played polo with his fellow officers while serving as a cavalry officer in World War I. He also was the commander of the Chicago Black Horse Troop, 104th Cavalry. Besides his love of polo, Maher said he was a “true visionary,” and despite what his father thought about the future of air travel, Butler founded Butler Aviation. His vision for the village is pret-

Volunteer helps others in challenging job market By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – No matter the age – college graduates, middle-aged adults or even those wanting to reenter the workforce – the job market often is bleak. “There are three people for every open job, and there’s like three million people out of work,” Judy Wolthausen of Hinsdale said. “It’s pretty hard to get that job you want.” In the midst of the dire job market, Wolthausen was set to retire when she felt it was time to give back and help others. In 2008, Wolthausen decided to volunteer about three times a week at the People’s Resource Center in Westmont, where she helps people in their quest for employment. When first meeting a client, Wolthausen begins by making the person feel comfortable and explaining her background. “I probably spend half of my time counseling, because everybody who’s out of work their self-esteem goes down, and they get very depressed,”

Wolthausen said. Wolthausen used to work at Sears, where she was in charge of hiring programmers, so she knows what employers are looking for in a resume and how to carry oneself during an interview. One of the problems job seekers find is how stiff the competition is, and employers aren’t making the process any easier. Wolthausen said employers are demanding the “perfectly fit person” for what they need, do not want to spend money on training and

spectrum of ages, including those in their early 20s all the way up until one client who was in his 80s. “I have several people with master’s degrees who can’t find work,” she said. Of course, it’s not all bad. Wolthausen said more than two-thirds of the people she helps find jobs. Some of her tips include making a onepage resume that includes key

qualities and only shows the past 10 years of experience. She said employers are looking for excuses to throw away resumes, so having a solid introduction is the first step. She also does mock interviews and said some answers could make or break a job, including talking too much about personal information. “You really shouldn’t be talking about your family or how many kids you have,” she said. “Those are all red flags to employers, because they start thinking about medical payments and things like that. It should be professional.” One of Wolthausen’s favorite success stories was a young woman who emigrated to the United States from Russia and was living on almost nothing. On top of that, she was pregnant and had a disadvantaged child at home. Wolthausen counseled her and eventually got her employed at T.J. Maxx. “It wasn’t a big job or anything, but it solved a big problem,” she said. What Wolthausen enjoys the most though is not just the help she’s providing, but the PRC in general, which helps people in need every day. She also loves seeing the transformation people make. “They sit down, they don’t have any hope and as I work with them, I see a change, and I see them have more confidence in themselves,” she said.

BURR RIDGE – The name says it all: Helping Hand. While Helping Hand Center may be known for serving children and adults with disabilities, its members are no stranger to helping others as well, including Eddie Merlot’s restaurant in Burr Ridge. At the beginning of the year, members of Helping Hand worked on the janitorial staff at the restaurant as a way to gain vocational training. Then in May, general manager Mike Rufo teamed up with executive

chef Dan Tucker to install a garden to not only supply fresh produce and ingredients for the restaurant, but also to provide more opportunities for Helping Hand members. “This was just another outlet for us to give back to these guys a little bit,” Rufo said. “They’re just super team members and really enjoy getting out there and helping.” Rufo said the team has taken ownership of the garden as a couple members were outside braving the heat wave and working with Eddie Merlot’s staff on some of the tending. HINSDALE – Frustration and more debate ensued among residents and board members Tuesday as the 2013 summer bid project was once again reviewed before a formal vote was taken whether to carry out the renovations to be done at Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South high schools. At the previous District 86 meeting, board members agreed to wanting more information and cost figures that would go into the projects, which include gym entrance remodeling, renovations to the girls locker room at Hinsdale South, painting different areas at both schools and other improvements. The projects originally were planned to be finished by the start of school, but with recent delays, construction may not be finished until late December or early January. Hinsdale resident Linda Burke called the summer project procedure a “debacle” and a political function of the new board. She said safety was one of her main concerns as this construction would be taking place while students and staff were in the building. She also said the delays did not save significant money and were not done transparently. “This is outrageous, it is embarrassing and it is wrong,” Burke said. Vice President Ed Corcoran said he did not see a risk with safety for students because the projects would not affect them. Contract manager Doug Lim of

Gilbane Building Co. was present at the meeting to field questions and said he had a concern about delaying the projects any further. “My concern not acting now is with demolition,” Lim said. “We wanted to get that mostly messy demolition done before school started.” Lim said the construction company would not put anybody in jeopardy as far as safety was concerned as this was not the company’s first project. “Summer is the preference [for construction], but they have safety regulations in place,” Lim said. Under the previous board, bid for the total construction project was $1,697,739. The new bid approved by the board Tuesday came in at $1,221,666, a savings of $476,073 from the original bids. Secretary Michael Kuhn asked whether the summer projects would interfere with activities such as basketball in November with renovations being done to the ticket booth and concession stand. “Let’s stop with the scare tactics,” Corcoran said in response. Lim said the projects would take place during activities, but would have a minimal effect. As far as cost compares from the original bids to the new bids, Kim said it was like comparing apples to apples because the difference is minimal. It prompted Jennifer Planson to ask, “Why did we rebid? If there was such a little difference.” Corcoran said several improvements have been made, including to design.

The blessing and curse of a career in journalism is that many of us end up moving around a lot. I’ve spent most of my career in the Chicago area, but I also enjoyed stints in the Northeast, Northwest and Southeast. Bellock said it was a “really tough decision” because being Senator is something she has thought about before. As for pursing a Senator seat in the future, Bellock said she just goes day to day with decisions like that and never thought she would be in politics this long. “I’ve just always done my job that’s in front of me and I feel this is the job that’s in front of me right now,” she said. “I feel the position I’m in right now I’m able to work at trying to get the budget back in order and that’s the key thing I would like to do. That’s been my mission the last four or five years.” Bellock said she like Dillard’s chances in the governor’s race because of how well known he is in this part of the state, and the fact he has been traveling and meeting residents downstate. She said she felt a lot of people took notice of him after he lost the primary last time by just 193 votes.

HINSDALE – As state Sen. Kirk Dillard, R-Hinsdale, pursues the governorship in Illinois, rumors have swirled as to who would seek his 24th congressional seat. State Rep. Patti Bellock, R-Hinsdale, 47th District, has removed herself from that rumor mill, saying last week she has no intention of pursuing the vacant seat. “I think my plans right now are to stay in the house because I just made leadership,” Bellock said. DARIEN – The Darien police chief has been accused of sexually assaulting and harassing a woman while he was a Chicago Police Department commander. According to a recent lawsuit, Chief Ernest Brown was accused in Centeria Moore-Powell’s lawsuit against the city of Chicago. “The allegations are false, but Chicago is addressing it being the defendant and that’s the major reason I’m reluctant to speak on it because it is a Chicago case,” Brown said. To the Editor: I would like to take a moment to commend a 303-Cab driver who went out of his way last evening to make a long, arduous day more pleasant. An older lady and I arrived at the Westmont train station at approximately 11:30 p.m. after having ridden on an Amtrak train for more than five hours. The cab was right there at the Metra station as requested, and the driver assisted my friend into the cab. When we arrived at Mayslake Village, he helped her into her building with her bags. When she had difficulty getting into the building, he got out of his cab and started to help her out, but by that time she had the door opened. This was all done without the meter running! If everybody did that, it would be a terrible mess over the tollway there. In the Suburban Life, there was an article about the Salt Creek butterfly farm, and they have a

bereavement program. If I had the money, I would gather up the people who are doing that and have a little bereavement ceremony with the butterflies. They also need to take down those tattered and discolored and dirty ribbons that are still up and down Wolf Road. I understand the loss of somebody. I’ve lost many people and family pets. I’m sorry for their loss.

Counterfeit $50 bill used at a garage sale DARIEN – Darien police received a report from a resident who received a counterfeit $50 bill. On June 28, a resident was holding a garage sale in the 9000 block of Brandon Road. The resident reported that two people bought an item for $8 and paid with a counterfeit $50 bill, receiving $42 in real money. One person was described as African-American 30s in age, five feet in height and heavy set. The other individual also was 30s in age, African-American, tall and average weight. The individuals left in a red car. The Darien Police has been in contact with the Riverside police who have received a similar report in their jurisdiction July 20. The Darien Police Department advises, if multiple bills are being used for payment, check to see that the serial numbers are not the same. Newer bills have watermarks and a security strip. Second police academy class to start in Oak Brook OAK BROOK – The Oak Brook Police Department announced that it has scheduled a second Citizen’s Police Academy class. This community-oriented policing program allows members of the residential and business communities an opportunity to gain a working knowledge of practices, policies and procedures of the Oak Brook Police Department. Topics of instruction include support services and community programs, Illinois vehicle code, DUI, criminal law, case law, evidence collection, SWAT, defensive tactics and traffic stops. More than 200 trees with emerald ash borer to be removed By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com WILLOWBROOK – At no bigger than a penny, it’s almost incomprehensible to believe how much damage the emerald ash borer can do to an ash tree population, let alone the village that has to carry on the financial burden of wiping out the intrusive beetle. The village of Willowbrook received confirmation of emerald ash borer’s presence in January, but started working on the potential problem in 2012 as other neighboring villages reported its presence. “We hired an Illinois-certified arborist forestry consultant to do a villagewide tree inventory, and it appears that in total on public land, we have about 800 trees total to deal with,” village Administrator Tim Halik said. Instead of dealing with 789 ash trees, the village, with the help of consultants, decided the best way to go about it was to remove 239 ash trees, which would cost the village $118,361.

Halik said the remaining trees are in a less severe state and could be removed in groups during the next couple of years. The EAB is a metallic green beetle native to Asia, according to the Illinois Department of Agriculture. The real damage from EAB occurs when the adult female lays eggs in bark crevices. The EAB young then bore into the tree where they chew the inner bark. This cuts off the flow of water and nutrients in the tree, causing it to die. All the ash trees removed from the village will be on public property, which includes right-of-ways, park properties and other village-owned land. “I think in a lot of cases, it will be obvious [the trees are gone] and apparent given the trees are located on right-ofways and park properties. I think it will be pretty visible,” he said. Halik said once the contractor, Pessina Tree Services LLC, removes the trees starting in late July or early August, another contractor will plant trees in place of those taken down.

The tree removal and installation process does not include private property, but Halik said property owners adjacent to where the ash trees are being removed can provide input and preference on the species of trees that will go there. The village also added a private participation component into the contract, which includes removal and planting contracts, that says the successful bidder would extend the same prices it offered the village to private property owners. “We obviously can’t pay for their trees on private property, but this is a way to help our residents out,” he said. Halik said the village did extensive research and gathered input from environmental sources before coming to the conclusion to cut the trees down. “From our research, it seemed the chemical treatments were expensive, and it only served to prolong the life of the tree; in the end, it would still die,” he said.

State bill allowing DuPage County stormwater fee awaits governor’s signature By ED MCMENAMIN emcmenamin@shawmedia.com Gov. Pat Quinn plans to sign a bill that allows DuPage County to create its own stormwater utility fee. The bill passed both state legislative houses May 16 and was sent to the governor June 14, according to spokesman Dave Blanchette. He said Quinn supports the bill and plans to sign it before the Aug. 16 deadline. DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin said the county stormwater fee would be more equitable than the current method of using property taxes to fund stormwater infrastructure, because a fee would be based on the amount of stormwater displaced by a property. “If you’re a big developer and you put down a large,

50,000-square-feet parking lot of concrete, and you displace a lot of water to your neighbor downstream, you’ll pay more,” Cronin said when the House passed the bill. “If you take steps to install semipermeable pavers and rain barrels at home, your fee will be a lot less; you’ll get credit for it. It’s the ultimate in responsible behavior policy.” The bill requires a two-year planning period including feasibility studies, public hearings and public outreach and education before the implementation of any fee. During the process, the county board also would have to vote whether to create the fee. If approved, the fee would present a new cost for property-owning nonprofits in DuPage County. Nonprofits are exempt from property taxes but not fees, DuPage County Board Stormwater Committee Chair-

man James Zay said. It’s a situation that has frustrated churches and nonprofit organizations in Downers Grove, where village officials approved a municipal stormwater fee earlier this year. Church and nonprofit leaders there say the fee has cut into their ability to provide services and assistance in the community, and have organized petitions and made public comments at village council meetings this spring and summer. That focus soon might shift to the county. Zay said churches and other nonprofits would not be exempt from any possible stormwater utility from the county, but that officials would discuss opportunities for credits for using permeable pavers, rain barrels, retention ponds and other measures that reduce stormwater run-off.

8NEWS BRIEF DMG expands 3-D mammography to Hinsdale HINSDALE – DuPage Medical Group (DMG), is expanding its diagnostic imaging services by offering 3-D mammography, also known as breast tomosynthesis, at its new Hinsdale location, 40 South Clay St., beginning last week. Tomosynthesis, or 3-D mammography, allows radiologists to better identify individual breast structures, according to a news release. Using 3-D mammography, radiologists can scroll through layers of the breast in one-millimeter increments, rather than viewing all layers of tissue superimposed. This layer-by-layer approach removes overlapping breast tissue, which can hide lesions and allows radiologists to view a mammogram in a way never before possible, the release said. The 3-D mammography process is similar to the traditional mammogram procedure. Wine and dine with small plates at Salt Creek Wine Bar In a fast-food land of heaping piles of french fries, 32-ounce soda buckets and extra-large pizza slices, it’s nice to find a place where you can eat small and eat slow. At the Salt Creek Wine Bar, you can do just that. On a recent Friday night, I traveled to Brookfield in anticipation of a nice meal at the wine bar, and got just what I was hoping for: several small plates to be enjoyed over a good glass of wine – in my case, sangria. Located just off the Brookfield train station near the corner of Grand Boulevard and Prairie Avenue, the Salt Creek Wine Bar has been a staple of the town’s restaurant community for many years. The atmosphere inside is relaxed and comfortable, filled with plenty of tables, a long bar and a performance area. Work by local visual artists is displayed on the walls, and music plays quietly in the background. My dining companion and I arrived about 6 p.m. and momentarily were surprised to be the only ones in the restaurant. However, other diners slowly trickled in, and the place was filling quickly by the time we left about 8:30 p.m. I suspect the reason for the later rush was a young woman with a guitar who was setting up in a corner as we departed. I wish I had stayed on for the music, because it’s a standard feature of the wine bar, with local acts playing everything from folk to jazz. The live music is a big draw, I’ve been told, and it pairs perfectly with the ambiance, food and drink. Because it’s a wine bar, wine definitely is the focus here. If you’re not a wine fan, there’s still a good beer and cocktail list, but with so many options and a knowledgeable staff, anyone should be able to find a wine they like – or several to try in a flight. Bar should be a destination where you go to sit a while, enjoy a good meal and conversation, and not worry about bringing home a doggie bag. You’re there to take it in, eat leisurely and enjoy the overall experience. I absolutely enjoyed my experience and plan to return soon. With a menu of tapas pizza, creative sandwiches and small plates made for sharing, there’s plenty still to try. When I return, I’ll check the musical offering first and bring as many friends as I can get to accompany me. Good food is good, but good food accompanied by good friends, good music and good conversation is something more – it’s a feast.

Big title quest Hinsdale Central grad Allen hopes to lead Michigan State football to win Big Ten championship By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com EAST LANSING, Mich. – Linemen may not have their names called as often as quarterbacks, running backs and receivers, but astute and eagle-eyed fans saw plenty of Jack Allen last season. The Hinsdale Central graduate and current Michigan State football player started 12 games on the offensive line and participated in all 13 of the Spartans’ games as a redshirt freshman last season. He won Michigan State’s Outstanding Underclass Lineman Award in his first season seeing game time and aims to do even better this season.

You played left guard and center last season. Which do you prefer? Center is more natural to me because I’m not 6-5. It wasn’t bad doing both. It was fun learning a new position and it helped me understand the offense more because I knew what the guards and the center were supposed to do.

What goals do you have for the team and yourself this season?

For the team, make it to the Big Ten Championship game and win it. We got there two years ago and it didn’t pan out, so we want to get there and win it. For me personally, I want to be all-conference and try to make a mark.

It wasn’t as tough as I thought it would be. The biggest difference is everybody here is just as good as you. All 100 guys were the best guy on their team in high school just like you. All the guys are the same kid as you are.

Your younger brother Brian has committed to Michigan State. How much input did you have in that decision? I kind of told him it was up to him. Whatever he decided I was going to be happy with. It’s going to be pretty cool to be on the same line with him. We’ve been on the same wrestling team before, but we’ve never been on the same football team, so that will be cool.

What makes you a good football player? I’d say one of my biggest assets is my toughness. I’ve got to work on my pass coverage a little bit. I’ve been working on that all summer so I hope to be a lot better at it this season.

Big Ten gridiron Local football talent gears up for 2013 season with Michigan State, more SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA

Jack Allen College: Michigan State High school: Hinsdale Central Class: Sophomore Position: Offensive lineman Splitting time between left guard and center last season, Allen started 12 contests and played in all 13 of the Spartans’ games as a redshirt freshman, anchoring an offensive line that helped produce 149.4 rushing yards a game in 2012. Named to the Big Ten Conference all-freshman team, Allen also was a first-team freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of American as well as the Sporting News. He is the No. 1 right guard on the Spartans’ depth chart heading into preseason camp.

Doug Diedrick College: Northwestern High school: Montini (Woodridge) Class: Sophomore Position: Superback An all-state linebacker in high school, Diedrick has transitioned to the other side of the ball in college to become a utility offensive player for Northwestern. After sitting out during a redshirt year in 2011, the Woodridge native saw his first collegiate action last fall and played in two games. He caught one pass for 13 yards against South Dakota

State and rushed three times for 12 yards on the year. He could see more action this season in NU’s spread offense.

Reilly O’Toole College: Illinois High school: Wheaton Warrenville South Class: Junior Position: Quarterback Sharing the quarterback spot with Nathan Scheelhaase last season, O’Toole played in seven games to Scheelhasse’s 10 but posted better numbers in completion percentage (74.7), touchdowns (six) and efficiency rating (142.7). O’Toole also rushed for a pair of touchdowns and finished second on the team in total offense. Last season, he set the program’s single-game record for completion percentage when he completed 83.9 percent of his passes (26-of-31) against Charleston Southern. As one of the most experienced QBs on the roster, O’Toole once again could see plenty of playing time.

er corps. Prater saw action in all 13 games last year, catching 10 passes for 54 yards. In his first game at Ryan Field, he caught three passes against Vanderbilt, and he hauled in two passes in the Wildcats’ 34-20 win over Mississippi State in the Gator Bowl. After a full year in the Wildcats’ system, Prater could be poised for a breakout season.

Tommy Schutt College: Ohio State High school: Glenbard West Class: Sophomore Position: Defensive lineman Schutt, who originally was committed to Penn State University, was an immediate contributor to the Buckeyes as a freshman. Appearing in 10 games, including a start against Central Florida in Week 2, this defensive lineman finished the 2012 season

with four tackles. The 6-foot-2, 303-pounder is expected to have an increased role this fall.

Austin Teitsma College: Illinois High school: Glenbard South Class: Junior Position: Defensive lineman In his second season playing for the Illini last year after taking a redshirt in 2009, Teitsma played in all 12 games and recorded 15 tackles, including two solo and two tackles for loss. He twice recorded four tackles in a game (against Charleston Southern and Northwestern) and forced a fumble against Northwestern. He also was an academic All-Big Ten honoree. Heading into the 2013 season, Teitsma is the No. 1 defensive tackle on the depth chart.

Mike Trumpy College: Northwestern High school: Wheaton North Class: Senior Position: Running back After playing 13 games in his first two seasons after a 2009 redshirt year, a fully healthy Trumpy played in all 13 of Northwestern’s games last season and finished third on the team in rushing with 349 yards and three touchdowns. He also figured into the passing game and caught eight passes last season. The academic All-Big Ten honoree finished sixth on the team in scoring and fourth on the team in total offense. Heading into his final season, Trumpy is expected once again to be a key contributor.

College: Northwestern High school: Wheaton Warrenville South Class: Sophomore Position: Superback One of four true freshmen to crack the lineup in 2012, Vitale played in all 13 of the Wildcats’ games last fall. He caught his first career touchdown pass against Nebraska, had 110 yards receiving in Northwestern’s win at Michigan State, and had seven receptions for 82 yards in the Gator Bowl. After the season, Vitale was named to the ESPN.com Big Ten All-Freshman Team and was the Offensive Newcomer of the Year award recipient. Vitale is at the top of the Wildcats’ depth chart at superback (No. 5 receiver) heading into the season.

He was one of Nebraska’s first commits in 2012 and one of the most heralded talents in that class. The sure-handed wideout isn’t expected to start, but should see time as the No. 4 or 5 wide receiver.

In three years with Stanford, Kokenis helped lead the Cardinal to two Final Fours (2011 and 2012) and the Pac12 Conference regular-season and tournament titles three times. She was Pac-12 all-conference as a sophomore in 2011-12 when she averaged 9.5 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.57 assists per game. Kokenis started 57 of the 91 games in which she appeared, averaging 7.7 points and 2.4 assists per game. She shot 39.3 percent from the field and drained 66 3-pointers during her career.

April 21, 1927 Referendum passed establishing a library and levying a tax for this purpose. April 17, 1928 First Library Board elected. June 25, 1920 Bond issue referendum to construct a building for $75,000.00 passed 120-70. February 8, 1930 By election of the people, the Library Act was amended to permit the library to be built in any park in the Village under exclusive control and supervision of library directors. April 11, 1930 Hired Grace Gilman as librarian prior to opening; signed agreement with architect Connor and O’Connor. May 26, 1930 Memorandum of agreement signed between Village and library to permit the library to erect and maintain a library on Village land. August 6, 1930

Awarded General Contract for construction of library building to Arvid H. Viren for $51,630. October 4, 1930 Ground breaking and laying of cornerstone. November 13, 1930 Resolution passed to construct a joint heating plant with the Township for heating both the Town Hall and the Library. April 4, 1931 Dedication and opening of the library. Those present included Mr. Connor, Architect of the building and Edgar Cameron, a Chicago artist who painted the mural of Marquette and Joliet. Robert Somer- ville, first Library Board President, presented the Cameron Mural and decorative map of the region as a personal gift to the Library. Over 1800 people registered for library cards the first week the library was opened. April 22, 1931 Organizational meeting for Friends of the Library. Mrs. Joseph Jaros was elected President. December 22, 1931 Cut annual operating budget from $8,990 to $6,500 due to low rate of tax collection during the depression. September 30, 1936 Board voted to replace library doors with solid oak entrance doors. February 24, 1937 Riverside Historical Society materials housed in the Library. February 1, 1940 Village moved out of basement room of the library. Basement remodeled into a children’s room. May 1, 1966 Riverside Public Library becomes one of the first libraries to join the new Suburban Library System (SLS). April 1975 Riverside Public Library was recipient of the “All-Star Library Award” from the Illinois Library Association. Referendum passed to increase library tax rate from 19 mils to 40 mils. November 1984 Referendum by voters to fund a $1,500,000 addition to the library passed 5,196 to 4,470. Architect : Frye Gillian Molinaro; Contractor: A.C.M. Associates; Size:12,500 sq. ft. addition to the 5,761 sq. ft. building. April 14, 1985 Groundbreaking for new addition. September 7, 1986 Grand re-opening of the library with new addition. October 1989 and January 1990 Flamingo Film Company spent four days filming an Encyclopedia Britannica Film in the Library. December 1991 Riverside Public Library pictured on the cover of American Libraries magazine. April 1997 Riverside Public Library building is used for the taping of the Oprah Winfrey Show book discussion of Stones from the River by Ursula Hegi. June 2007 Library receives a $12,000 grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Foundation to complete the replacement of lighting in the Library. July 2008 Bats at the Library, a children’s book by Brian Lies, is published by Houghton-Mifﬂin Corporation. The “Library” used in the book is the Riverside Public Library. October 10, 2008 Author Brian Lies comes to Riverside to read from and autograph his book, Bats at the Library. The Library celebrates this event with “Batoberfest”, an evening of fun for the entire community. Bat images lit the Library Building and the Village’s Water Tower to publicize the event. May 2010 The Library is involved in the Language of Conservation and is the recipient installations of poetry and other related materials throughout the building. “The Language of Conservation”, is an initia- tive of the Poets House in partnership with the Chicago Zoological Society, Riverside Public Library and Brookﬁeld Public Library, as well as a consortium of zoos and libraries nationwide. It is made possible by a National Leadership grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and will continue for three years. October 2010 The Library celebrates the 80th Anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone and begins its 80th year of service to the people of Riverside. April 2011 The Library celebrates 80 years of service to the community! March 2012 The Library’s Sustainable efforts project, We R Riverside Responsible, kicks off.

April 5, 1999 The front of the Library was filmed for use in an episode of “Early Edition”. November 7, 1999 Dedication of the Quiet Reading Room. Young Adult Area opened on lower level. August 2002 Young Adult Area opened on lower level. April 2004 Lighting fixtures, made to look like those which originally hung in the Library, were installed in the Great Room. The fixtures were purchased with money received from the estate of Grace A. Board, a former staff member and friend of the Library. April 24, 2005 The Library’s 75th Jubilee Year begins with a Commencement Celebration. A whole year of programs, events and celebrations took place in recognition of the Riverside Public Library’s 75th Anniversary. All costs incurred and associated with the Anniversary year were funded by the River side Friends of the Li brary. June 2005 Library receives grant of $ 27.000 from the Illinois Clean Energy Foundation to replace lower level lighting. April 30, 2006 The Riverside Friends of the Library mark their 75th Anniversary. Their many years of support to the Library is celebrated. June 2006 The Library receives a $17,000 grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Foundation to replace the lighting in the Adult Non-Fiction area. September 2006 Landscaping project completed. Funded by the Riverside Garden Club, the Frederick Law Olmsted Society and the Riverside Friends of the Library.

It will be a festive way to kick off our next decade of the RAC and will truly be a night to remember!” Since 1993, the Riverside Arts Center (RAC) has been providing Riverside , its surrounding suburbs and the city of Chicago with exhibitions, arts classes, and special events. The RAC is located in the heart of Historic Riverside. It includes the Freeark Contemporary Art Gallery and a variety of studio space, including a renowned clay studio that has a full range of electric, raku and stoneware kilns. RAC offers more than thirty art classes each term (Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall) for children and adults in mediums ranging from clay, to oil painting, to fused glass jewelry, to printmaking. The RAC also offers provide tours, field trips, and curriculabased workshops for public and private schools and professional development opportunities for teachers. The Spectacles will be twenty minutes long. They will take place in Guthrie Park, using the SONIC BOOM “contraption” pictured below. Poetry written by Central School students will play through speakers, and the fourth graders will perform and interact with the audience in the park. Riverside Arts Weekend (RAW) celebrates both visual and performing arts with a multi-media juried fine arts fair and full musical performance schedule centered in Riverside’s Guthrie Park. Glamour takes center stage on Sunday, May 19 at 2:00 p.m. as RAW presents Revelry, a runway show featuring emerging designers from Dominican University. Revelry highlights fashion as a form of art with the cutting edge work of nine (9) alumnae of Dominican University’s Apparel Design program. The designers will present collections true to their respective artistic visions and highly unique from one another.

Revelry opens with the work of established designer Caroline Borucki (caro___) who has retail presence in New Buffalo, Michigan. It then segues to the work of emerging designers Alexandra Howard (Elmwood Park), Izzy Heras (Romeoville), Amanda Lindley (Tinley Park), Samantha Petkofski (Niles), Iris Carney (Berwyn), Molly Morettes (Park Ridge), Hannah Gerhardt (Omaha, NE) and Erin Von Kannon (Monmouth). Many of the designers will also exhibit portfolios and samples of their work at a Dominican University collective booth throughout Riverside Arts Weekend.

The mother and son team make up Higgins Glass Studio, 33 E. Quincy, entrusted to the Wimmers to carry on the art crafted by their long time mentors, Fran and Michael Higgins, who began the company in 1948. Louise and Jonathan agree that it was Fran’s ideas and Michael’s energy and ingenuity that led these two huge talents to start their work out if their Chicago apartment in 1948. Over the years their art sold in such major retailers as Marshall Field’s, Georg Jensen and Bullocks Wilshire, the very high end store in the California based department store chain. In 1966, the Higgins decided to return to private studio work and set up their offices in Riverside. The website notes that “here they were free to set their own goals, meet their own standards and design in the direction their hearts and minds led them.” There’s a lot of history in Higgins, and the Wimmers are proud of their work and the company.
