Members of Kidz in the Mix practice their routine at Oak Brook Park District on Jan. 23.
Kidz in the Mix shines, but falls short By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – Kidz in the Mix gave it their all with an energetic original routine, bold costumes and praise from the executives at television’s “America’s Got Talent,” but a turn in the reality TV spotlight wasn’t meant to be. “The executives stared at [the kids], and one woman she was sitting next to said to another, ‘So what do you think?’ and she said, ‘I think it was perfect,’ and the other said, ‘Oh, I think so too,’” said Tanja Pazou, who instructs the Hinsdale dance group. The acrobatic dancers auditioned for the reality television competition in January. Despite the praise, the group was not invited to perform in Las Vegas for the celebrity judges. This was surprising
to Pazou and the girls because executives filmed a behindthe-scenes segment for the show. Pazou said she received a call a few weeks after the audition from a producer saying he would be in Hinsdale to film a breakfast scene and the kids getting up in the morning before the show. “The director went on the rooftop outside and shot the scene from the outside in through the window,” Pazou said. “I’m like, ‘Should we really do that, what if he falls off the roof?’” The segment was even shown on television during the competition’s Chicago auditions, but Kidz in the Mix didn’t make it to the main stage. A combination of yoga, dance and gymnastics makes up the performance, and even though they didn’t move on in

the selection process, Pazou said the 6- to 11-year-old dancers kept their chins up. “They were disappointed, but I think they handled it pretty well,” she said. “I think they got over the fact that things not always work out perfect, and for these kids that’s a really important thing to learn.” The disappointment of not moving on in “America’s Got Talent” has not deterred the group. Rather, it has made them more confident knowing how much producers and executives enjoyed the act and that tryouts will come back to the area for a new season in the winter. “I think we should definitely try out again,” she said. “Maybe for the next choreography I’m going to put something funny together, something to laugh about maybe and still with acrobatic skills and dance

skills.” In the meantime, Kidz in the Mix shot a second TV pilot with the goal to bring dance, yoga and acrobatics, along with a focus on environmental and nutritional education, to children across the country. Pazou also is working on getting a full length feature film about dance produced, which she hopes to get underway in October. Pazou said the experience of auditioning for “America’s Got Talent” was a thrill, but to see the kids evolve into great dancers, especially those who couldn’t dance before trying the class, was something special on its own. “They just performed in front of these executives, and then having film crews coming to Hinsdale just for them, it was a great experience they’ll never forget ... I’ll never forget it,” she said.

Irritable Bowel, Celiac, Crohn’s or Colitis? Are you afraid to leave your house due to an unpredictable bowel? Have you tried diferent treatments but continue to sufer? Do you know the essentials for a healthy digestive system? Have you given up and decided to just live with it? he digestive system assimilates food (carbs, fats and proteins) to produce energy. It breaks down food into nutrient forms that your body can absorb. It uses enzymes, good bacteria and hydrochloric acid to break down food to a usable form. Your gut is a barrier, a tube that starts in your mouth, continues as your esophagus, small intestine, large intestine and rectum. 80% of your immune system is in your gut. When you break down the barrier (gut lining), toxins can “leak” into the blood stream leading to an immune response, inlammation and food allergies. Hippocrates, the father of medicine said… “look to the gut, there will you ind the origin of almost all human illness.”
Hi, my name is Dr. Jefrey E. Forzley with Lemont Natural Healthcare. I am a chiropractic physician and a holistic practitioner. I am passionate about helping people with chronic health conditions. I have been in practice for 28 years. As a holistic practitioner I evaluate the nervous system, immune system, endocrine system (hormones), diet essentials (Neuro-‐Metabolic Care), manage the underlying cause and use natural therapies to manage digestive disorders. here are many essentials required for proper digestion. Let’s talk about a few… Zinc is necessary to make hydrochloric acid (HCL). HCL is needed to break down food (protein) in the stomach and for production of methyl groups. Methyl groups turn on tumor suppressor genes and turn of oncogenes leading to potential cancer growth. If HCL is deicient, this results in poor digestion and a many imbalances due to a deiciency of methyl groups. HCL deiciency also leads to growth of pathological bacteria like H. Pylori, which can cause gastritis, stomach ulcers and possibly stomach cancer. Probiotics (good bacteria) are normally found in the gut. Optimal levels are needed for a proper functioning digestive system. hese probiotics are also part of your immune

system. hey play an important role in the protective barrier in your gut. Your gut makes up 80% of your immune system due to this barrier system. Antibiotics kill pathologic bacteria and infections but they also kill good bacteria and cause gut dysbiosis (imbalance). his dysbiosis can lead to pathologic bacterial, yeast and parasitic infections as well as food allergies. Digestive system inlammation is associated with IBS, Crohn’s, Celiac and Ulcerative Colitis. It is due to stress, poor diet, toxins and food allergies. Digestive inlammation leads to production of cytokines (inlammatory cells). hese cytokines travel in the blood to the brain and inlame the brain cells. he brain (mesencephalon) in turn controls the digestive system. his leads to a vicious cycle resulting in an inlammatory cascade which exponentially worsens over time. Successfully managing digestive conditions involves balancing the nervous system, digestive system and immune system as well as improving the diet, decreasing gut inlammation and detoxifying the body. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a digestive disorder that includes abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating and alternating constipation and diarrhea. he cause is unknown but theories include toxic overload, intestinal infections, inlammation from stress and poor diet generalized condition of the digestive system poor signaling from the brain to the digestive system for proper function.
Medications to treat digestive disorders can weaken your immune system and lead to infections and immune degenerative conditions including cancer. hese medications may give you symptom relief but have side efects and DO NOT ADDRESS the UNDERLYING CAUSE of your condition.
Testimonial As someone who lives with chronic nausea, poor digestion and anxiety, I assumed I was out of options when countless doctors told me that there was nothing else they could do for me. hey told me it was likely all in my head. hen I visited Dr. Forzley and he told me from the initial consultation that he was very conident he could help me. I was so excited that I cried. No other doctor has ever been so much on my side. Now, 8 weeks into treatment, I am nausea free, anxiety free and my digestion is normal. I have started living a life I never thought I could live. My body is a machine, slowed and dirtied by processed foods and environmental toxins. But with the help of Dr. Forzley, my body is on the way back to an optimal state for long term health and happiness. Veronica M.
Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity is a digestive condition that involves gluten sensitivity like Celiac Disease but is not an autoimmune disorder. It involves digestive symptoms (pain, bloating…), fatigue, joint pains as well as neurologic symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, poor memory, brain fog and diiculty concentrating. Celiac Disease, Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis are autoimmune diseases. An autoimmune disorder is when your immune system attacks your body instead of protecting it. here is NO CURE for autoimmune disorders. But you can calm down the immune response NATURALLY and decrease the efects of the tissue destruction. If you have an autoimmune disease like Celiac, Crohn’s or Ulcerative Colitis and you do not balance and calm down the autoimmune destruction, your immune system can attack other tissues and cause multiple autoimmune disorders. It is common for people with an autoimmune disorder to have multiple autoimmune diseases for this reason. Medications are not always the long term answer.
Holistic therapy can manage digestive conditions by: 1) inding and balancing the underlying cause and… 2) using natural therapies that work with your body.

dciamprone@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – After eight years serving Hinsdale Township High School District 86 as superintendent, Nicholas Wahl intends to take a new position as the superintendent of Carmel Clay Schools in Indiana, according to a Tuesday news release from the Carmel Clay School Board. The board anticipates Wahl will assume the role Aug. 28. The District 86 Board of Education granted Wahl’s request for immediate resignation at a meeting Monday after deliberating in closed session. Wahl requested that he be released from his contract and that the typically required 120 day resignation notice be waived. Wahl could not be reached for comment by the time of publication. “It was unexpected,” said school board President Claudia Manley. “I didn’t know he was going to resign until he gave notice.” Manley said neither she nor the rest of the board knew Wahl had accepted a job at Carmel Clay and said she doesn’t know the reason for his resignation. Board member Kay Gallo could only speculate as to why Wahl resigned. “I believe he was treated inconsiderately and that there were a couple of instances I had witnessed, like not being included in scheduling of committee meetings

and things like that,” Gallo said. Gallo said she didn’t know if there was one contributing factor in Wahl’s decision to leave, but in her opinion, he looked at his situation and thought what would be best for his family. Manley said she believed the board, along with new members from the April election, were working well together with Wahl. “It was one of those things where you just had to feel things out and get used to each other; I think we were probably still in that process,” Manley said. “It was fine working with him. He was a man of experience.” Gallo disagreed and said there was a difference of philosophy between the superintendent and the new board. “My philosophy as a board member is that the board hires the superintendent to run the district,” Gallo said. “I believe the new board, the three new members, along with Dr. Skoda, believe the Board of Education runs the district and there’s the difference in philosophy.” The Board of Education announced that the district’s assistant superintendent for instruction, Bruce Law, has accepted the appointment as acting superintendent for the district. Law has been assistant superintendent since 2010. “He has our full confidence and our full support,” Manley said. “Schools will open with no concerns at all.”

HINSDALE – Ten years ago in Israel, a woman suffered devastating injuries as a result of a terrorist bombing while on a bus with family members. Among these injuries was a Benjamin shattered left fe- Domb mur. Since then, Chana Nathansen has been in physical pain, but it’s nothing in compared to the emotional anguish caused by a much greater loss. “She said her biggest loss of all, of course, was that of her 3-year-old daughter,” said Hinsdale Orthopaedics surgeon Benjamin Domb, 37, of Oak Brook. “I have a 3-year-old, so this kind of bit at my heart strings, if you will.” The suicide bomber killed 23 people. Nathansen needed arthroscopic surgery on her right

hip, but did not have the means to afford it. She was advised by Rabbi Avraham Elimelech Firer to contact Domb for help. Domb said Firer is a famous figure in Israel and throughout the world who advises people about where to go for medical problems. Domb said he was touched by the rabbi’s recommendation and by Nathansen’s story. As a result, he agreed to do the surgery pro bono at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. “This was an opportunity for me to get to do something good for someone who has gone through so much bad,” Domb said. Domb performed the surgery July 24. He said it was a complex process because there was scrap metal in Nathansen’s body from the bombing and he encountered challenges in the other leg from a past hip replacement. “She has since gone back to Israel and so far she’s doing great,” he said.

Township programs benefit the community Downers Grove Township is involved with multiple projects that benefit your community. Your Highway Department spearheads many of these programs, which include:
Catch basins/storm drain treatment Downers Grove Township is committed to mosquito control and each spring the Highway Department treats catch basins/storm sewers throughout the township. These catch basins are treated with larvicides that kill and prevent mosquito larva from hatching into adults. To control the mosquitos, we ask residents to keep your rain gutters clean, change birdbaths, wading pools and check your property after a rainfall to empty any pooled water.
Fall brush pickup program Our brush pickup program covers only the unincorporated areas of Downers Grove Township. Please remember that the dates below are target dates and delays due to weather, equipment failure, etc. can affect the schedule. Let property owners vote
Regarding the thumbs up about the YMCA taking proposals from developers for the space that’s empty and vacant at Ogden Avenue and La Grange Road: Your stance is that anything would be good. No, anything would not be good if it included apartments and multi-family housing. La Grange and La Grange school districts are full. They don’t need Section 8 housing, which is inevitable once the economy tanks, which is going to happen at some point in the future. So please just go retail or Y, I hope they rebuild, perhaps their own facility on the space but no apartments.
Now that Governor Quinn has said he will sign into law the bill authorizing DuPage County to charge a stormwater fee, it is interesting to recall that the Illinois General Assembly passed this bill for Peoria County and DuPage County. The bill provides an opportunity for Peoria County voters to vote on whether or not to permit their county to charge property owners the fee. But the bill does not give DuPage property owners the same power. Of course our County Board could let us vote on this. What are the odds of that happening?

Most people know that there are many ways to grieve. Everyone is allowed to do that in his or her own way. Personally, cups that spell out loving memories of a beautiful life cut short seems perfect to me. Every time I see them, I say a silent prayer. I hope those young people continue their tribute for many years to come. No one has a right to criticize that which they obviously can’t understand.

Family Farm Fest raises more than $20,000 for charity By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com CLARENDON HILLS – Technically, it was a church event. But there was no preaching, no organ music and no reading from the Bible. Instead, children flocked joyously to pet alpacas, live music played and food was in abundance, as folks supported a noble cause. The Church of the Holy Nativity in Clarendon Hills was hosting its annual festival – Family Farm Fest – which is in its seventh year supporting Heifer International, an organization that aims to end world hunger. “I think by partnering with Heifer International, it invites people in the community to come and participate in the church’s mission to change the world through an organization that’s already very familiar,” said the Rev. Aimée Delevett, who is the rector at Church of the Holy Nativity. The church’s goal this year was to raise $25,000, enough for five arcs, which carry two of every animal that Heifer distributes to a family. One of the stipulations with Heifer is that the first offspring of the animals are given to another family in need, so several families can benefit. The animals include goats, horses and even bees and worms. The benefits of each animal are numerous, such as goats that can give milk to be made into butter, cheese or yogurt to sell, or sheep to produce wool to sell or for clothing. “I guess that’s why I’m involved, because they teach self sustainability instead of just giving them the food,” said Mary Lu Connally, who helps organize the event. Connally said it takes
about 70 volunteers to put on the fest, which include members of both the church and the wider community. A ball of energy, Connally led the cake walk, greeted everyone in attendance and showed her love of what Heifer does. She also reflected on the passing of her dear friend, Nancy Handke, who was a long time parishioner at the church and passed away recently at 82. On display was a plaque and banner commemorating Handke. “This Family Farm Fest is dedicated to her because she is the one that brought Heifer International to the church,” she said. Delevett said one of the reasons the fest is so popular is its relatively cheapness. While playing the 25 games, making crafts and winning prizes, Delevett said kids can have fun and at the same time learn how their spare change is actually “changing this world.” One of those children who was enjoying the fest for the first time was twoyear-old Noah Natarelli of Clarendon Hills, who was petting the sheep. “He’s having a fantastic time and is so excited about all the animals here,” said his mom, Corri. “The sheep yells and that’s why Noah likes him, so he’s very excited about that.” Connally said the fest raised more than $20,000 for Heifer and its organizers will decide in the next few weeks where they want Heifer to give the proceeds. The funds raised will be added to the already impressive total of $117,000 that the church has collected for Heifer in its first six years. “What this church cares about more than anything, more than its own subsistence, is being a transformative presence in the world,” Delevett said.

seeing. I think we can turn it around. We just have to have the right policies and the right leaders.” This is Truax’s first venture into politics. He said he hopes to build a coalition of “independent-minded” Democrats, Republicans and young people frustrated with the slow economy. “I know it’s a big state but it can be done,” he said. “There will be a lot of people interested in this race. Especially as it proceeds further and people see I’m a viable candidate and that Dick Durbin getting re-elected is not inevitable.” Truax, a New Mexico native, said he has spoken with state and national Republican party leadership, but did not say what was discussed. Durbin, 68, won his last three terms handily. The general election is in November 2014.

Truax said he has focused his priorities on tax reform, specifically lowering the corporate tax rate, closing loopholes and simplifying the code. Doing so would send a message of certainty to business owners and inspire growth, he said. Truax also said he wants to see more power returned to the states and reduce federal spending. “I think that, just as I’ve seen, many Illinois voters have seen the years and years of decline here in Illinois and around the country,” he said. “No matter how you measure it, Illinois has been on a decline … and their policies have directly impacted what we’re

Restaurant reviews
Charm and character highlight Public Landing Public Landing is a restaurant rich in character. Its charming setting and classic upscale fare surely are enough to attract those with an appetite, but the history ingrained in the Lockport eatery’s limestone walls truly sets it apart. It inhabits the first level of the historic Gaylord Building, a limestone warehouse constructed in 1838, that played a vital role in one of the great enterprises of the 19th century: the digging of the 96-mile-long Illinois & Michigan Canal. Nestled between the canal, a railway and a park, the building provides a local history lesson to Public Landing diners. Murals on the walls of the building’s entrance explain its significance to mid-1800s trade, while engraved stones just outside the restaurant’s patio offer a glimpse into how the waterway was born. President Abraham Lincoln played a big role. My companion and I spent a recent summer night at Public Landing. Dinner came first, followed by a relaxing walk through Lincoln Landing Park, a terrace along the canal just south of the Gaylord Building. Inside, diners are treated to a lovely window view of the restaurant patio, park and terrace overlooking the canal. Of course, you get the sense you’re dining in history: Wooden beams line the restaurant ceiling, and the limestone bricks show through to the interior. After we were seated, a veteran server greeted us kindly before bringing out warm pretzel bread with our appetizer, the House Made Chips. The app, tossed with Romano cheese and sea salt and flanked by a ranch dipping sauce, was both tasty and a bargain. For our entrees, I went with the Char Broiled Pork Tenderloin, while my companion opted for the Blackened Mahi Mahi, served over a roasted red pepper coulis and complemented with zucchini and yellow squash. The pork tenderloin was

Miller, Titans teammates ready to atone for tough finish in 2012

Hinsdale South graduate Kevin Miller and his Illinois Wesleyan University football teammates hope to make up for a disappointing 2012 season this fall. By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com DARIEN – Kevin Miller has found plenty to keep him busy this summer. Interning at Catamaran Corporation in Lisle has filled the schedule, as have a plethora of football-related activities. “I helped coach the freshman football camp at Hinsdale South, and I’ve been working out and running five times a week,” said Miller, who is heading into his senior season with Illinois Wesleyan University’s football team. “I’ve been working hard to get ready for the season.” After winning their first six games of the 2012 season,
including four by 30 points or more, the Titans lost four straight in the College Conference of Illinois Kevin Miller and Wisconsin to end the year. That ending is something that still stings for Miller and his IWU teammates as they get set to start the 2013 campaign. “We had a bad finish to the season, and that left a bad taste in our mouths,” Miller said. “When we were working out during second semester, it was definitely on our minds. It’s a big-time motivator for us to get back on the field and win some games.” The Titans are in prime po-

sition to atone for last season. Miller said the team’s greatest asset is the senior leadership provided by the largest senior class IWU football has ever had. The team’s top five rushers, top three passers and six of the top-10 receivers from last year, including Miller, are slated to return this fall. The wealth of experience
will help the Titans, and the fact they feel a little slighted by the D3football.com preseason rankings only adds fuel to the fire. “We have a lot of seniors and juniors that have played before, so our experience and our age should help us,” Miller said. “As a team, I think we’ve got a little chip on our shoulder because we got left off the preseason rankings. We think we can be the best team in the conference.” Three of the Titans’ final four games last season were on the road, including at Wheaton College, North Central College and Elmhurst College. This fall, IWU will welcome those three teams to Bloomington in the season’s final month, bypassing some
of the toughest places to play in the conference. “I’d say both the toughest team and toughest stadium to play in is North Central College,” Miller said. “Since I’ve been here, they’ve been pretty good.” On a personal level, Miller is looking to fill a larger role within the receiving corps and be a team leader as the Titans look to leapfrog Augustana and 2012 CCIW trichamps Wheaton, Elmhurst and North Central to the top of the standings. “I think I’m in a position where I am going to have the chance to be on the field a lot,” Miller said. “I worked hard last season and in spring ball, and I think I can contend for a bigger spot this year.”

The power conference CCIW football emerges as a premier D-III league By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com North Central College’s football team has won or tied for a conference title the past seven seasons. But head coach John Thorne knows maintaining that kind of success in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin will only get harder. “I think the conference has gotten more and more competitive,” said Thorne, who is heading into his 12th season at NCC. “The coaches in place are having good success recruiting people and everybody is competitive. Nobody wants the next program to get ahead of them.” That’s easier said than done. During Thorne’s tenure, six of the eight schools in the CCIW have won or taken a share of the conference title. North Central and Wheaton College have won outright titles while Augustana, Elmhurst, Illinois Wesleyan and Carthage have tied for titles. Wheaton College head coach Mike Swider has spent nearly 30 years coaching in the CCIW and has seen the overall competition get better in the NCAA Division III conference. “The conference has always been strong, but from top to bottom it has gotten stronger,” Swider said. “From top to bottom, the conference is as good as there is in the country. If you are picking the four or five top conferences, no doubt the CCIW is in there.” To gauge just how high the level of play is, Swider points to a specific area. As a conference, CCIW teams are 16-1 in the first round of the playoffs since 2001.

“That tells you a lot,” he said. “Our conference always wins the first playoff game and that gives you credibility.” In terms of recruiting, CCIW schools compete with other Division II and III schools, NAIA institutions and players that receive walk-on offers from Division I schools. The competition for players can be fierce, but Division III schools are looking for a different type of student-athlete than the Division I scholarship athlete. “I think one of the things that I set off to do once I took the program over was to have excellence not only on the football field, but not to sacrifice the academic model,” said first-year Elmhurst College coach Joe Adam. “We’re not going to compromise academics for guys that can play the game well.” The schools in the CCIW are private institutions, which adds another speed bump on the recruiting trail. NAIA schools can offer scholarships, and the smaller state schools in Wisconsin, such as perennial D-III contender Wisconsin-Whitewater, are public institutions with lower tuition rates. For local players who are serious about school and are interested in playing compet-

and only so many guys can go Division I,” North Central senior Shane Dierking said. “Plus the CCIW has outstanding coaching staffs and out-
standing institutions where you can get a great education as well as be a part of great athletic programs. Why not sign the papers?”

ELMHURST – Last season Elmhurst College football made the playoffs for the first time in school history. The Bluejays won a share of the CCIW title for the first time since 1980 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs. After the season coach Tim Lester moved on to Syracuse to be the quarterbacks coach and Joe Adam, who was the defensive coordinator, replaced him. Among the challenges facing Adam in his first season is replacing running back Scottie Williams, who won the Gagliardi Award for best player in Division III last season.
SUBURBAN LIFE: What did it mean to you to take over as head coach? JOE ADAM: Dream come true. It really has been. It’s been such a blessing and it’s been fun putting it together for me and the coaching staff trying to raise the bar for what we did last year. SL: How do you follow up such a successful year like last year? JA: I think you start by understanding that that’s how the culture is here now and will continue to be. When we set up to put this thing together it was with this very point in mind that we would have a

players we’re trying to recruit collectively. Plus, the location in the big part of the midwest here where we’re close to major metropolitan areas and a few hour drive from major cities. I think that’s an attraction to kids. SL: Is there anything you’ve tried to change since you took over? JA: The thing that identifies this program is called blue collar mentality. It’s on every piece of paper we hand out. BCM is on every article we issue from a team standpoint. It’s what our identifying mark is this year. It’s teaching kids what the blue collar mentality stands for. SL: How has the program changed since you joined in 2007? JA: It was a very much different culture. This is a complete 180. It’s enjoyable. It’s fun to challenge people and the kids have responded. I give a lot of credit to our kids here. They work like no other group in any level of football I’ve coached.

team that would be able to contend on a consistent basis, not just a one-hit wonder. It took a bit longer than we would like, but we are to the point where we expect to win. SL: How has the transition from assistant to head coach been? JA: I think for me it was an easy transition because I’ve been the recruiting coordinator for almost five seasons now. I was very in tune to what we were looking for, the characteristics and traits we were looking for. We scour the country for not just anybody, but the right people that fit what we’re going to do here. SL: How do you recruit for a Division III program? JA: One of the things that I put a big onus on is work ethic here. I expect and I demand work ethic from the players. It’s going to be work ethic that gets you into successful situations, whether it be here in college or in life. We measure that in a lot of different ways. We measure that in academics, in face-to-face communications and in interactions with our support staff. SL: What makes the CCIW such a competitive conference? JA: It’s Illinois football and it’s the partnership that our league has with our area high school coaches who understand the level of football here and understand the type of

Both Prospect and Eccles Fields are located behind Clarendon Hills Middle School, and can be accessed off of Chicago Avenue in Clarendon Hills Ideally players will be able to attend two days of try-outs; if players can only attend one day, the best determination will be made from that effort only. The Cardinals are a professionally trained youth baseball organization committed to the quality development of local players from 9 years old into high school. To provide the highest level of training and objectivity, all teams use professional trainers to provide training and skill development and ensure that players are appropriately positioned in games according to their demonstrated skills. Try-Outs will be conducted under the supervision of former major league player, and current Cardinal trainer, JJ Furmaniak. The teams play a competitive basebal schedule with local travel teams in the WSBL and tournament play consistent with our development focus. Cardinals are also a feeder team for Rhino Elite Baseball, an Elite level travel program that progresses players into the high school level and is dedicated in assisting players in achieving their goal of playing college baseball by playing at a regional and national level of “showcased” competition. If players show the appropriate level of capability within the Cardinals, or at try-outs, they will be evaluated and selectively provided invitations to join the Rhinos, if they are capable and that level of competition is desired. Please have players at try-outs for sign up, 15 minutes before their designated start time. If you have any questions, please contact Rick Herbst at RHerbst26@gmail.com. • Age qualiication will be based on the individual’s age as of 4/30/2014.

The mother and son team make up Higgins Glass Studio, 33 E. Quincy, entrusted to the Wimmers to carry on the art crafted by their long time mentors, Fran and Michael Higgins, who began the company in 1948. Louise and Jonathan agree that it was Fran’s ideas and Michael’s energy and ingenuity that led these two huge talents to start their work out if their Chicago apartment in 1948. Over the years their art sold in such major retailers as Marshall Field’s, Georg Jensen and Bullocks Wilshire, the very high end store in the California based department store chain. In 1966, the Higgins decided to return to private studio work and set up their offices in Riverside. The website notes that “here they were free to set their own goals, meet their own standards and design in the direction their hearts and minds led them.” There’s a lot of history in Higgins, and the Wimmers are proud of their work and the company.
