On Aug. 7, the kids participated in one of the most fun days of camp at Double J. Riding Club where they learned about horses, including nutrition, grooming, safety and hygiene. Tom Borys, 11, of Clarendon Hills was busy petting a horse near the nutrition station after making cookies to feed them. This is his second year doing
the camp and was eager for it to start again. “I think it’s more fun this year because we got to make horse cookies this year and feed them to the horses,” Tom said. One of the counselors, Kathleen Hu, said the camp was great, and all the kids were amazing and well-behaved. Some of her favorite activities included meeting with the service dog Aug. 5 and solving the mystery at Mayslake.

school?
“[The kids] are all avid animal lovers, so a lot of the kids already have experience with animals,” said Hu, 16, of Clarendon Hills. Many girls grow up dreaming of owning a pony, and one of the reasons HHS camp goes out to Double J is to show just how much work is involved in caring for horses. From the nutrition, grooming and maintenance, the horses are taken care of almost all day. “You have to take care of

HINSDALE – Every animal, whether it’s the 6-week-old kitten or the six-foot boa constrictor, deserves compassion, love and respect. That was the message for the kids in fourth through sixth grade as they participated in the Hinsdale Humane Society’s Summer Camp, which was Aug. 5 to 9 for its last installment of the season. Kids got to go on assorted field trips to Mayslake Forest Preserve for a nature creature mystery, Brookfield Zoo and to Double J Riding Club. They were learning while having fun. “Our goal really is to educate them that even bugs have a purpose and we need to be respectful, show compassion and educate,” Humane educator Kym Iffert said. “Even though we might not like rats and snakes or mice, there’s a purpose to all of them and we have to try and teach respect.” One of those lessons came Aug. 6 at Mayslake Forest Preserve in Oak Brook when the kids went on a nature mystery to find out what happened to “Marty Mouse” who disappeared. Going through the forest preserve, the kids gathered evidence and witness information. Unfortunately, Marty was a victim of the circle of life. “Even though the owl may have eaten Marty Mouse, there is a reason – the owl has to survive,” Iffert said. “The owl has a statement that ‘I was just trying to feed my babies.’” Afterward, the group got to go and dissect owl pellets. Iffert said some of the kids were squeamish at first but eventu-

HINSDALE – While some may have forgotten the damage from the storm that rolled through town in June, there is one business that hasn’t. Hinsdale Clothiers, 777 N. York Road, suffered the brute of that storm after lightning hit a power line a few feet from the building. As that power line was falling, it pulled down another power line in front of the store causing it to directly hit the roof with its transformers piercing the ceiling. Owner Steve Potter said one of the transformers opened up and started dripping oil along with rain water into the store. The oil smell also permeated the clothing, ruining Hinsdale Clothiers’ inventory, he said. When the store reopened last week, customers were impressed when they came back after a little more than a month, said Stephanie Sevilla, communication strategist and business development direc-

David, who is an Eagle Scout. David said one of his favorite memories of Boys Scouts took place with his dad as they took a backpacking trip in New Mexico at the Philmont Boy Scout Ranch. While there, he said his dad was carrying his sunglasses but lost them during a day of
hiking. David and a friend walked the seven miles back to where they had started the day but did not find the glasses. David returned to camp, after a combined 21 miles of hiking that day. What happened next is something he can laugh about now. “My dad comes up to me and
goes, ‘I found your glasses,’” David said. During the 50 years, Troop 56 has produced 96 Eagle Scouts, nine within the last year, and has had 750 members. “To be a part of that is just awesome,” Assistant Scoutmaster Jeff Wilson of Willowbrook said.

BURR RIDGE – Fifty years is a long time for anything, but when a tradition of courage, integrity and character can be continued for that long, then it’s something special. Troop 56 out of Burr Ridge celebrated its 50th anniversary Sunday at the Burr Ridge Community Center with a potluck lunch and summer court of honor. In attendance were not only current boy scouts but also several former Boy Scouts, Eagle Scouts and prominent residents.
“I have to admit, I was never a Boys Scout, but my priorities in life are God, family and country,” Burr Ridge Mayor Mickey Straub said to the crowd. “I’m in good company today.” David Biedrzycki of Willowbrook has been Scoutmaster for the past four years and while he never was a Boy Scout, he said he was just a “crazy guy who loves the outdoors.” What he has enjoyed most is seeing the boys grow and mature. “I’ve seen some of these boys from Tiger Scouts and now they’re married and have kids,” Biedrzycki said. One of those boys is his son,

By DANNY CIAMPRONE HINSDALE – The Hinsdale Village Board unanimously approved the contract and welcomed in a new village manager Tuesday. Kathleen Gargano now will come to Hinsdale after spending 16 years working for the village of Wilmette, currently as the assistant village manager. “The trustees spent a lot of time over the past months searching for a new village manager,” said Village President Tom Cauley. “We received 125 applications for the job and
we interviewed 17 candidates, all of whom were well qualified.” In Gargano’s previous position, she was responsible for interacting with the Village Board, developing the village’s $60 million budget, handling human resources and risk management issues and assisting with economic development. Gargano thanked the Village Board Tuesday, especially after the competition. “I look forward to joining the staff here and being part of your team and being part of the community,” Gargano said.

WHEATON – There he was with that same calm, gentlemanlike demeanor, sporting his orange prison suit and sitting alongside his attorney. That was until Jacob Nodarse started speaking. While he still remained calm, Nodarse at least on the surface appeared to be a man who was remorseful, apologetic and vulnerable. “Not God himself can change what I did on that dark night in March 2010,” Nodarse said during his 15-minute statement at Monday’s sentencing. “The depth of my remorse exists endlessly in my ocean of regret.” In March 2010, Nodarse committed triple murder after he entered a home in Darien and shot Jeff, Lori and Michael Kramer. On Monday, he received 75 years in prison without possibility of parole, which, for the 26-year-old formerly of Countryside, likely means the rest of his life. Despite his horrific crime, Nodarse was an all-star witness for the state in the trial of Johnny Borizov, who was convicted of manipulating Nodarse into committing the murders. In July, Borizov was sentenced to life in prison without parole. “[Nodarse] never complained and was always willing to meet, discuss and go on for hours on end,” Assistant State’s Attorney Joe Ruggiero said during his testimony at the sentencing hearing. “He expressed severe remorse every time we met.” During Nodarse’s testimony in April, he was calm during even the most heated of questions from the defense and never seemed shaken by any of his responses. He was the same Monday, but for the first time, the Kramer family heard his apologies. Nodarse acknowledged Borizov’s involvement in his statement, but said he should have been stronger to fight off Borizov’s threats. “I was too weak of a person to master my fear, and
fear became my master,” Nodarse said. Nodarse also addressed Angela Kramer, daughter of Jeff and Lori, and expressed how sorry he was for what he did to her and her family. He said he prays for them every night and could not imagine the pain he has put her and the rest of the Kramer family through. “I’m so sorry...there are no right words to say,” he said. “I want you to know I only feel love and sympathy for your whole family.” For Angela Kramer, Nodarse’s words were not enough to make her forget the night she hid in her bedroom closet in fear as the pops from a gun barrel echoed throughout her home. Kramer called this a “dark chapter” and wants to move forward. “After today, I’m thankful to say I will close that chapter in my life,” said Kramer, who has a now 4-year-old son with Borizov. Judith Pokorny, Jeff Kramer’s mother, also addressed the court and said she believed Nodarse should face the strongest sentencing possible after she saw his calmness on the witness stand. She said he did not appear remorseful, especially when he held the gun he used during the trial, and instead displayed a “cocky manner.” Pokorny tried to describe how much she wanted to see her family again. “I kiss their picture every night,” Pokorny said. “I ask them to watch over me and I cry.” Before sentencing No darse to 75 years, Guerin took into consideration Nodarse’s cooperation with the state in convicting Borizov, his history of mental illness, drug use and the manipulation by Borizov. For Guerin, those factors could only mitigate a crime of triple murder so much. He also was stunned Nodarse had no criminal history. “It makes this crime all the more bazaar and tragic,” Guerin said. “To commit triple murder like this is shocking.”

By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com BURR RIDGE – Burr Ridge Mayor Mickey Straub said “it was a golden opportunity missed” after the plan to build two five-story hotels in the vacant lot at 15W150 South Frontage Road was voted down Aug. 5 by the Burr Ridge Plan Commission. “I’m glad people spoke out and let their voices be heard, but I think a couple of things went array,” Straub said. Facing opposition from several residents, Straub said he was disappointed that the final aspects of the project didn’t have a chance to get presented by Rachit Dhingra, CEO for the developer Odyssey Hotels, and said the plans were pretty “phenomenal.” Mark Thoma of Burr Ridge was one of the residents who opposed the hotel construction and said several others had the same views. Thoma said he and the neighbors he talked to initially were worried about the visual impact, but then started to worry about the impact on flooding as that area is prone to it during storms. “The key intersection at 75th and Drew Avenue, that intersection occasionally goes underwater so the hotel would be backing right up to that,” Thoma said. Besides the visual appearance, Thoma said he and others also were not fond of having a 24-hour business in town. “We found out that people were really worried about the image of Burr Ridge changing that it would become an overnight stop rather than our quiet little community that has kind of been a hidden gem for all these years,” he said. When running for the mayor’s office in April, Straub said some of his main goals were to make the Village Center successful and increase revenue for the village. He said the hotels not being built now would be a blow to that
and felt part of the reason the hotels did not get approved was politically motivated. “These hotels would have been a great shot in the arm for the Village Center and the entire downtown,” Straub said. “If there is one good thing that came out of this, it is shedding the light on the potential flooding problem the village should look in to.” Straub said he was disappointed that there was no compromise, such as building one hotel or two four-story hotels, instead of canceling the project all together. If the project had passed the plan commission, the two five-story, three-star hotels’ construction would then go to the village board for consideration. “In my opinion we should go back to them [Odyssey] and go, ‘Please reconsider our village,’” Straub said. “Please reconsider one four-story hotel and let us work together and make this work.”

Cronin lauds Sandack for SB494 Dear Editor: Recently, Governor Pat Quinn signed landmark legislation that will enable DuPage County to consolidate smaller, inefficient layers of local government. Although narrow in scope, Senate Bill 494 was fiercely opposed by entrenched special interests that benefit from the current bureaucratic system. Fortunately for the citizens of DuPage County, Representative Ron Sandack enthusiastically signed-on as Chief Co-Sponsor and worked tirelessly to ensure the bill’s passage. Previously, as mayor of Downers Grove, Ron Sandack was the only mayor to express support for the last major initiative I sponsored in Springfield – the reform of the DuPage Water Commission and the repeal of the commission’s quarter cent sales tax (in 2016) that will save DuPage County taxpayers tens of millions of dollars annually. During his brief tenure in Springfield, Representative Sandack has focused on making government more accountable and transparent to voters and has set an example as a public servant by declining state health insurance and legislator pension benefits. I am grateful for Representative Ron Sandack’s leadership and am proud that he represents the citizens of DuPage County in Springfield.

Missing coupons This message goes out to the person who took my coupon folder from the Jewel in Darien on Aug. 6. I hope you needed it just as much as I did, and that you will find work, and I will be employed soon also. You desperately needed the coupons that I had even though I did have my name and address and phone number in there and an indication that I was out of work, and I really would have appreciated it if somebody would have turned it in it. I had quite a bad day that day, and that just kind of topped it off there.

Some senior residents of Downers Grove are old enough to recall the train derailment that totaled the Main Street station. Fortunately, it didn’t involve the long chains of tank cars full of flammable materials that are common today. There must be some regulation that is being ignored. God forbid that a derailment of a string of dozens of tankers would happen, spreading an inferno for blocks of homes north and south of the tracks. Why can’t the strings of tank cars be interrupted with strings of non-flammable box cars, or other cargo cars? At least then, a partial derailment

Growing up, she was an only child, but today, Stockhausen enjoys quite a large family, which includes her husband, Bill, seven children and eight grandchildren. Having a large family has helped Stockhausen during the 18 years she has spent in the education field because she can connect with a variety of students. She said she has enjoyed teaching everything from technology to math to reading at most grade levels. “I taught kindergarten through eighth, and they all have their special qualities,” she said. “The students bring excitement to each grade level.” Stockhausen completed her educational doctorate degree at National Louis University in 2005 and was previ-

A splendid taste of East Asia at Thipi Thai GLEN ELLYN – There’s nothing quite like the mix of sweet and savory flavors that you get from Thai food. Spiciness is a hallmark of many forms of Asian cuisine, and you’ll get that from Thai food, too. But the combination of opposing flavors sets Thai food apart. As a longtime fan of the cuisine, I had high hopes when I stopped by Thipi Thai in Glen Ellyn on a recent weeknight. And my dining companion, even more of an aficionado, was nearly chomping at the bit with hunger. Fortunately, we were not disappointed. From the enchanting decor to the delightful dishes, we were in for a terrifically memorable meal. Without hesitation, we placed our drink orders as soon as we saw the menu – we never pass up a chance to get Thai iced tea. It’s a strongly brewed iced tea with sugar and condensed milk. The milk and the sugar complement the bitterness of the tea rather than masking it, making for a sensation that engages your taste buds. For appetizers, I opted for the shumai steamed crabmeat dumplings served with soy sesame vinaigrette for dipping. It’s a common order for me, and Thipi Thai’s version was just right. My companion went for the coconut shrimp, which came with a pineapple mango sauce. “Perfectly sweet and tangy,” my dining companion said. On to the entrees. We’re both big fans of pad woonsen, which is what my companion ordered, but I thought I’d try something different and selected the orange beef. I’m only moderately tolerant of spicy food, but the menu showed just one pepper next to my choice – the scale appears to go up to three for items such as kung pao noodle chicken. One particularly spicy pepper caught me by sur-
Pad woonsen chicken can be flavorless at a lesser restaurant, but that’s not a problem at Thipi Thai.
The coconut shrimp are plenty tasty, but it’s the pineapple mango sauce that really seals the deal. Suburban Life Media photos

prise, but otherwise it was just right, with the pineapple and mandarin orange slices providing the perfect contrast to the peppers and beef. I should have saved some to bring home, however,
because I left myself without any room for dessert. I probably would have chosen the “chocolate pyramid” – chocolate mousse with sauteed bananas over a rum sauce. I requested a few bites of my companion’s pad woonsen with chicken, and very much enjoyed the mix of cellophane noodles (I’ve seen them referred to as glass noodles elsewhere), chicken, egg and vegetables in a brown

garlic sauce. Thipi Thai has a high-ceilinged dining area, with an alcove toward the back that’s
up a flight of stairs. Prints of Asian scenes and delightful elephants carved from driftwood adorn the walls. We found the service to be excellent, attentive without being obtrusive. And the menu has plenty of dishes I’ve never tried before to tempt me to return.

Jackie Alyinovich (left), a former Hinsdale South standout, has played in all 38 games in her first two seasons at Northwestern.
All-academic Hinsdale South alumna works to rebuild Northwestern program By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com EVANSTON – As an academic All-Big Ten soccer player, there aren’t many lessons Jackie Alyinovich has yet to learn. But the Northwestern junior did pick up on one fact as she trained this summer to get ready for the 2013 season. Working out both on her own and with her teammates, she discovered group activities came much easier. “I think it’s easier with your teammates because you have some support,” she said. “It was nice to work with the team.”
Alyinovich and many of her teammates stayed on campus to take summer classes, and when Jackie they weren’t in Alyinovich the classroom they spent their time doing soccer-related activities — running, working out and scrimmaging with some of the Wildcats’ men’s players that also stayed on campus. All that hard work had a purpose. “We definitely are looking forward to getting back onto the field and rebuilding our program and making it stron-

ger,” Alyinovich said. After going 7-10-2 last year and 2-16-1 during Alyinovich’s freshman season of 2011, the Wildcats want to turn things around. Minus her first two seasons at Northwestern, Alyinovich has known nothing but success on the soccer field. A full-time club player with Eclipse Select throughout high school, she won State Cup championships with Eclipse in 2009 and 2010. When the season kicks off against DePaul on Aug. 14, Alyinovich and her teammates will try to find the winning touch with the aim of turning things around. “We’re trying to get our

program back to the place where we’re winning more games and we’re seen as a competitive team that other teams are afraid to play because we’re going to challenge you,” she said. “I definitely think everyone has been working hard to accomplish that.”
Alyinovich will play a big part in the Wildcats’ success this season. So far in her college career, she has played in 38 games with 37 starts. Last fall, she logged 1,710 minutes, playing every minute of the season with the exception of 45 against Indiana. She once again figures to be a key defender, and she has the added duty of being a team captain, the only junior captain on the team. As a major voice on the team this season, there is one message she wants to get across. “No matter what day it is or what drill you’re doing, you have to get the most out of practice,” she said.

8COLLEGE NOTES Former Red Devil DelZenero motor for U of C On the heels of a solid 2012 season, Nikki DelZenero (Hinsdale Central, Willowbrook) should once again be a major force for the University of Chicago volleyball team. A first-team University Athletic Association honoree last year, the 5-foot-9 senior setter played in 40 matches and recorded 1,402 assists, 381 digs, 88 kills and 47 aces, and 30 times she had at least 30 assists in a match. She could once again approach those numbers as the most experienced setter for the Maroons, who start play Aug. 30 to 31 at the Elmhurst College tournament.
More Maroons Keith Reidy (6-foot-5 defensive lineman) and John Warren (5-foot-10 defensive back) will both be juniors on the University of Chicago football team this fall. Reidy played in two games last season while Warren played in one and was named to the
University Athletic Association all-academic team. Both are Hinsdale South graduates. Tim Veselik (Benet Academy, Hinsdale) will be a freshman for the Maroons this season. He is listed on the roster as a 6-foot linebacker.
Sternard a stalwart on the floor Sara Sternard (Westmont High School, Clarendon Hills) was a major contributor for University of Illinois-Chicago’s women’s volleyball team last fall, tallying 278 kills with a .276 hitting percentage, the 11th-highest in program history. She was named Horizon League Player of the Week once and earned the team’s Spirit Award last season. The 6-foot-2 middle hitter is the most experienced player the Flames have at that position heading into the 2013 season.
Davis digs in for Wolverines Ally Davis (Hinsdale Central,
Hinsdale) is preparing for her sophomore volleyball season with the University of Michigan. A letter-winner last fall as a freshman, she played in 19 matches and finished the year with 52 kills, including 10 in a match against North Florida. She is one of four outside hitters listed on the roster this year.
Raise the curtain After taking a redshirt year and sitting out last season, Melissa Nava (Hinsdale South, Burr Ridge) is set to finally take the floor with University of Illinois-Chicago’s women’s volleyball team this fall. She is listed as a 6-foot middle hitter on the roster.
Back in the swing Flames host local flair A pair of current University of Illinois-Chicago cross country runners are Hinsdale Central graduates. This fall, Arash Darbandi (Oak Brook) will look to build upon two top-10 finishes of a year ago, when he placed fourth at the UIC Opener first meet and took 10th at the NIU XC Open. Brad Somerfield (Willowbrook) competed for the Flames in the UIC Opener, the Bradley XC Classic and the Horizon League Championships last fall and could contribute even more this year.
The women’s golf team at the University of Illinois will be relying on a pair of Hinsdale Central graduates this fall. Redshirt junior Samantha Postillion (Burr Ridge) was one of two Illini golfers to play in all 11 events during the 2012-13 season, when she was second on the team with a 77.06 average a round. She was even better during the fall portion of the season. She averaged a team-best 76.73 and led Illini scorers in six tournaments. Erin Ahern (Hinsdale) is a junior on the roster and will see her first action with the Illini after
joining the team in the spring.
Battaglia the Bulldog Muriel Battaglia (Hinsdale Central, Hinsdale) is entering her junior season with Yale’s women’s soccer team. She appeared in 17 games as a freshman in 2011, and last fall she played in 11 games and scored three goals to finish second on the team in that category. The 5-foot-10 biology major is listed as a forward on the roster.
Start it up Two Hinsdale Central graduates could make their debuts for Miami University (Ohio) this fall. After taking a redshirt year last fall, James Callen will be active for the football team. He is listed as a 6-foot-5, 260-pound offensive lineman on the roster. After playing forward and helping Central to a state runner-up finish in the spring, Casey May is listed as a freshman defender for the women’s soccer team.

Hinsdale South’s Ali Issa catches a pass against Ridgewood during a 7-on-7 game this summer in La Grange Park.
Ground rules for gridiron practices in effect By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com As the football teams from Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South started preseason practices Wednesday, it was business as usual. Well, almost business as usual. Thanks to some new practice guidelines put in place by the Illinois High School Association, some tweaks had to be made to the practice routines. “It’s cut a little time out of practice,” Hinsdale South coach Mike Barry said. “I’m kind of an old-school guy, so I remember when we used to do triples (three practices a day). Now that’s kind of going away.” The new rules stipulate that only certain amounts of equipment can be worn on certain days, and that a mandatory period of rest takes place
between practice sessions. While mapping out practices for the entire season, Barry had a plan for how to deal with the two weeks the new rules pertain to. “For us, it’s a matter of amping up the intensity of practice,” the coach said. “We’re going to go at a pace where we’re going to end up getting conditioning work out of it in practice instead of on the side.” While the new guidelines seemingly inhibit the amount and type of work football teams can do in the preseason, Barry said in the end it won’t be that big a deal. Most teams, including the Hornets and Red Devils, practice and compete in 7-on-7 passing events early in the summer before the first official practices take place. During that time offensive and defensive schemes can be refined and teaching
can take place. “After summer camp and going into our third year, we feel like we already have a lot in place,” Barry said. At Downers Grove South, Mark Molinari, a former assistant who has taken over as head coach, said the new rules had a little bit more of an impact. Molinari said the new rules will place more emphasis on film-room study and walkthroughs, which do not count toward overall practice time (weight room work and other conditioning does). His preliminary plan for his varsity squad, on days when practice time is limited to three hours, was to practice for two hours in the morning and do film study during the mandatory break time before practicing for an hour in the afternoon. He also said that planned practice schedule could go by the

from what we’ve done in the past,” Molinari said. “Once we hit the practice field, we’re going to be moving at all times.”

Riverside Arts Weekend (RAW) celebrates both visual and performing arts with a multi-media juried fine arts fair and full musical performance schedule centered in Riverside’s Guthrie Park. Glamour takes center stage on Sunday, May 19 at 2:00 p.m. as RAW presents Revelry, a runway show featuring emerging designers from Dominican University. Revelry highlights fashion as a form of art with the cutting edge work of nine (9) alumnae of Dominican University’s Apparel Design program. The designers will present collections true to their respective artistic visions and highly unique from one another.
Revelry opens with the work of established designer Caroline Borucki (caro___) who has retail presence in New Buffalo, Michigan. It then segues to the work of emerging designers Alexandra Howard (Elmwood Park), Izzy Heras (Romeoville), Amanda Lindley (Tinley Park), Samantha Petkofski (Niles), Iris Carney (Berwyn), Molly Morettes (Park Ridge), Hannah Gerhardt (Omaha, NE) and Erin Von Kannon (Monmouth). Many of the designers will also exhibit portfolios and samples of their work at a Dominican University collective booth throughout Riverside Arts Weekend.

The mother and son team make up Higgins Glass Studio, 33 E. Quincy, entrusted to the Wimmers to carry on the art crafted by their long time mentors, Fran and Michael Higgins, who began the company in 1948. Louise and Jonathan agree that it was Fran’s ideas and Michael’s energy and ingenuity that led these two huge talents to start their work out if their Chicago apartment in 1948. Over the years their art sold in such major retailers as Marshall Field’s, Georg Jensen and Bullocks Wilshire, the very high end store in the California based department store chain. In 1966, the Higgins decided to return to private studio work and set up their offices in Riverside. The website notes that “here they were free to set their own goals, meet their own standards and design in the direction their hearts and minds led them.” There’s a lot of history in Higgins, and the Wimmers are proud of their work and the company.
