Trainer brings Stanley Cup to Oak Brook By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com OAK BROOK – The summer of Stanley in the Chicago area is coming to an end, but wherever the NHL championship trophy goes, huge crowds are sure to follow. It was no different Tuesday in Oak Brook when Jeff Thomas, athletic trainer with the Chicago Blackhawks, brought the Stanley Cup to Athletico, 709 Enterprise Drive. The unpublicized event was scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., but only a half hour into it, long lines started to form trying to get a look and photo with Lord Stanley. “Summer has been crazy,” Thomas said. “We haven’t had a lot of

downtime after the season, but we’re getting healthy and getting ready for non-mandatory stuff coming up on the [Aug.] 26.” Thomas joined the Blackhawks organization in 2003 after serving as an intern-assistant athletic trainer with the NBA’s Atlantic Hawks during the 2002-03 season. He also served as an intern with the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks and the Chicago Bears. Thomas credited Chairman Rocky Wirtz and President John McDonough for not only what they’ve done with the team, but also for providing everything the trainers needed from a medical standpoint to assist the players. “One of the reasons they won is

because they played for each other and played together,” Thomas said. Athletico President Mark Kaufman said he couldn’t be more proud of Thomas for the job he and the rest of the training staff has done. “Jeff is fantastic,” Kaufman said. “He’s the reason why we have [the Stanley Cup] here today and there’s obviously a lot of excitement.” Athletico is the official physical therapy and athletic training partner of the Chicago Blackhawks and Kaufman said he is a big Hawks fan. “They’re a first-class organization,” Kaufman said. “We were there when they struggled to get 5,000 at the UC and now we just have so much appreciation for how they’ve turned that organization around.”

WILLOWBROOK – Every fall, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) comes through the village of Willowbrook and does a “patching program” to grind down roadway defects that are exhibiting excessive wear that will be cut out and patched. “If you drive Kingery through Willowbrook, you’ll notice it’s kind of like a quilt patch of work, so we were kind of pleased in that we were going to have one consistent asphalt roadway,” said Village Administrator Tim Halik. That plan to have one consistent roadway scheduled for this summer was part of two IDOT projects to resurface Route 83 in Willowbrook. Halik said the road work would start south at Archer Avenue and go north to Knollwood Road near 63rd Street. The other project was from Knollwood to Butterfield Road. But Halik said the project now will have to wait until its original construction year of 2017. IDOT thought the construction could be moved up to 2013 because of excess funding, but that funding did not exist. Halik said IDOT was “off to the races” as all documentation was turned in and the village agreed to nighttime construction. “We hope to get that work done, but I guess we’ll just have to wait a few more years,” he said. Right now, the road is a mix of asphalt and concrete surfaces. The projects paid entirely through IDOT would be to grind a certain depth, about two inches, and then come back and repave two inches. While that project will have to wait four more years, Halik praised IDOT’s efforts. “I give them credit for managing the vast amount of projects they have to complete in a given season as well as they do,” he said.

Hinsdale Police chief named chief of the year HINSDALE – Hinsdale Police Chief Brad Bloom has been named the Illinois State Crime Commission’s Police Chief of the Year for 2013. Family Shelter Executive Director Karen Kuchar praised Bloom, who has been a member of the Family Shelter Board of Directors since 2010, and recently took over as its board
president. In DuPage County, law enforcement works hand-in-hand with Family Shelter Service. For each domestic violence incident reported to law enforcement, police officers make a call to Family Shelter for follow up with one of the organization’s counselors regarding the affected individuals. A 27-year veteran of the Hinsdale Police Department, Bloom has served as chief of police since 2002.
Attorney named one of Best Lawyers in America HINSDALE – Jeffrey Kroll of the Illinois personal injury firm of Salvi, Schostok & Pritchard P.C. was recently selected by his peers for inclusion in the 20th edition of “The Best Lawyers in America” 2014, according to a news release from the law firm. The Hinsdale resident was recognized in the field of personal injury litigation and also has been selected in 2011, 2012 and 2013. Adding to his recent honor, Kroll recently obtained the largest dog bite settlement reported in Illinois, according to the Law Bulletin’s Jury Verdict Reporter. A teen was mauled by a dog while riding his bicycle. Kroll secured $1.125 million for the victim. Best Lawyers is based on a peer-review survey in which almost 50,000 leading attorneys cast nearly five million votes on the legal abilities of other lawyers in their practice areas.

out the young generation,” Nsengimana said. “That was their goal, and they wanted to wipe away anyone who could provide for the family.” Nsengimana was forced to grow up fast – he was only 6 at the time. Though he had siblings to help, he had to rely on luck and his faith, which he said came to him one day during a time of escalating violence when he got separated from his family and slipped in something that would save his life. “In the process of falling, I realize a bullet has just missed my head,” he said. “I look down, and it was a cow pie.” Nsengimana then went to an orphanage for several years, which is where he would receive that momentous candy cane. It was included among several other items in a shoebox from Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, an international Christian relief organization. Items in each shoebox include toys, hygiene products, school supplies and candy. It

one of the biggest issues is dealing with reconciliation. “There were hundreds of thousands of criminals who overflowed the jails,” Schubert said. “Now Rwanda as a nation is trying to figure out how do you bring those people back into society and how do you get people like Alex to go and give forgiveness.” This past March, Nsengimana did just that as he traveled back to Rwanda
to visit the prison where the man who murdered his family was held and he forgave him. That man received Nsengimana with tears and joy, and it’s Nsengimana’s hope that others in Rwanda will experience reconciliation. The now 25-year-old hopes to return to Rwanda and start a church. “The country is making great strides and it’s really incredible to see what they’ve done,” Schubert said.

DARIEN – Standing among hundreds of other displaced children, an orphan received something in a shoebox that was foreign to him in his home country of Rwanda. He said it was in the shape of a “J,” red and white, didn’t feel good or smell good – two of the senses tests he did to all things unknown at the age of 7. “The next thing you have to do is put it in your mouth to see if it’s sweet and that was my very first time eating a candy cane,” said Alex Nsengimana to a large crowd Saturday at Four Corners Community Church in Darien. “It tasted good, but I wish I would’ve known to take the plastic off.” To many, a candy cane is just a common treat, but when Nsengimana tasted the minty delight for the first time, it would mark one of the greatest days in his life in more than a year. Nsengimana is a survivor of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, Africa, in which members of the Tutsis population were slaughtered by the Hutus in central east Africa. While he may have been lucky to escape, his grandmother and uncle were not – they were killed in front of him. “There wasn’t any reason they shouldn’t have killed us because they wanted to wipe

He said the country is still recovering from the 1994 genocide and

HINSDALE – She has been reading for as long as she can remember, starting when her mom would tell her stories every night as a child, and then as she got older when they would read their own books together after dinner. “My favorite children’s picture book is ‘Where’s My Teddy?’ by Jez Alborough – I have it pretty much memorized,” said Tiffany Verzani, who recently left Hinsdale Public Library for a new position as library director at Elmwood Park Public Library. For the past 13 years, Verzani has been working at the Hinsdale Public Library as the youth and young adult services manager and assistant director. She has done everything from marching in

Verzani said her mom was a murder mystery buff, so those types of stories have resonated with her. But she also enjoys everything from fantasy to science fiction, historical adventures and poetry. Every work field has its cast of characters, but Verzani’s may be the most entertaining – she works with kids on a constant basis. She said some of her favorite memories were dressing up as Snape at the Harry Potter parties and participating in the Hunger Games teen party. She’s also going to miss those “Kids Say the Darndest Things” moments. “In storytime, the theme that day may be dinosaurs or

bugs, but that doesn’t stop a preschooler from raising her hand and saying, ‘I love Batman,’ or ‘My dog threw up this morning,’” she said. Storytime, especially with a picture book, is a joy for any preschooler. But as technology becomes more advanced, it causes libraries to advance as well. In some libraries, paperback books are being replaced with Kindles and iPads. Verzani said both Hinsdale and Elmwood Park are innovative and unafraid in using technology, but doesn’t believe new technological devices will replace books. Verzani said it was a hard decision to leave Hinsdale Library because of the friends she has made, her co-workers, working in the community and her love of the library. However, she felt going to Elmwood Park Public Library was the “right move at the right time.” “I have been considering making a move to a director position, and I feel a great kinship with the community,” she said.

HINSDALE – Ruben Peña couldn’t go more than a minute without getting a “hello” from across the room or a high-five from a student. “I’m excited to be back,” said the principal of Hinsdale Middle School at its back-to-school day Aug. 14. “We have great kids, a supportive community… I’m lucky to be principal here. It’s a great place.” Peña, the PTO and teachers braved the controlled chaos as they helped sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders get their schedules, move in to their lockers and take care of supplies in preparation for the start of another school year. The actual first day of school was Thursday. “It is a little chaotic, but this is such a critical time for everybody to work out the kinks with their schedule and the ease it causes the kids who are so anxious, especially the sixth-graders,” said Cathy Daly of the PTO who co-chairs the back-toschool day. For the sixth-graders, they will have to face a barrage of new obstacles, such as changing classrooms and making it to each class by the time that bell rings. “The funniest thing of all is they don’t even know how to turn the lock on their locker,” Daly said. “That is the most stressful part of their day is that lock.” Peña said he’s looking forward to helping the sixth-graders feel welcome and assisting them with finding their way around the school. He’s also counting on the seventh- and eighth-graders to be leaders and help the incoming middle schoolers. “As a staff, we recognize the sixth-graders are going to be nervous and so we’ve given them a few extra minutes to get to and from classrooms,” Peña said. “They need to know every sixth-grader is feeling nervous and it’s going to be OK.”
At the back-to-school day, students could also pick up pre-ordered school supply kits, dictionaries, get their school I.D. card and science goggles. “All this stuff we’re handing out now the teachers would normally be handing out the first week of school, so we’re saving classroom time by doing all these types of tasks for the teachers so they can get right down to the curriculum the first week,” Daly said. Daly also stressed that everyone at the back-to-school day was there voluntarily, including the teachers who were assisting as this was not a part of their pay week. “I’m looking forward to meeting the new kids and seeing the old ones,” said sixth-grade teacher Vicki Johnston, who was helping students find where they need to go. “They grow so much over the summer.” Johnston said all the kids she’s been meeting with were excited to be back after the summer, especially the ones she has taught before who were happy to see her again. “Summer was fun, but I’m looking forward to being back,” said Juliana Mayer, 13, of Burr Ridge. Daly, who has two boys

She also was proud of the efforts during back-to-school day because of what a great confidence booster it is for the students. “I’m a big proponent of Hinsdale 181 and now I’m coming at it from the parent perspective and really appreciate the district more after being a parent in it,” Daly said. “I’m not just blowing smoke, they’re all really amazing here.

8SOUND OFF until late in the evening. … Yelling at your dog to ‘stop barking’ actually reinforces that behavior. Do some research and find ways to eliminate this behavior. Ultimately, if you cannot control your animals barking, keep them in the house where you will be the only one who has to listen to them and allow your neighbors some peace and quiet.

As a pet owner, I am appalled at my neighbors who allow their dogs to continually disturb the peace by their incessant barking. York Township Senior Center is a ‘cool’ spot As the summer wanes and Labor Day approaches, please remember that the York Township Senior Center at 1502 South Meyers Road is an official cooling center for senior citizens. Seniors who need relief from the heat can stay in our air conditioned auditorium, open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday COMMUNITY through Friday. If there is VOICE an event or class going on in the auditorium, please be disJohn creet. Either join in or find Valle a comfy chair in the hallway until the event is over. Seniors should take extra precautions during heat waves and are advised to stay in air conditioned spaces at least several hours during the daytime. On extra hot days, anyone without air conditioning should take refuge with family or friends whose homes are cooled. Other alternatives are public buildings such as libraries, park districts and shopping malls. And even if you don’t need relief from the summer weather, York Township Senior Center is a good place to be. Depending on the day and time, you may play bridge or pinochle or attend an art class or sit in with a woodcarving class. We also have activities that provide a little more exercise such as Yoga, Tai Chi, Line Dancing and Yuan Ji, a combination of Tai Chi and dance. For those of you who enjoy being pampered, a barber, beautician and occasional foot care clinics are available by appointment. We have a free movie on the big screen in our auditorium every Tuesday afternoon. Throughout the year, we schedule many one-day trips, in-house parties and entertainment as well as many educational seminars. We also offer referral services to seniors who need legal aid or chores done around their house. Our capable Senior Center staff also can help you apply for LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program), Circuit Breaker Assistance and SHIP (Senior Health Insurance Program). We continuously are looking for new programs and services to offer to our seniors. For information or if you have any suggestions about new activities, seminars or classes you want to see us offer, call York Township Senior Center at 630-620-2424.

It’s good to see Hinsdale Clothiers up and running again. After damage from storms in June forced the men’s clothing store to close for more than a month, the doors recently reopened with a brand new look and inventory. The store celebrated its 25th anniversary Saturday. Fifty years and going strong. Boys Scouts Troop 56 in Burr Ridge celebrated the milestone anniversary last week with a reunion of alumni and current Scouts. Burr Ridge Mayor Mickey Straub recognized the special occasion, telling the crowd, “I’m in good company today.” Here’s to another 50 years.

It’s beginning … the annual shedding of the winter coat of your beloved dog. The winter coat that your pet put on for the winter is beginning to release and allow for the summer coat to come in. This can be a minor inconvenience for some, or a downright blizzard of blowing dog hair for some dog owners – depending on the type of breed and coat. We have an awesome solution for you!!!!! Getting more from your newspaper Do you ever go to the grocery store and discover there’s more cereal in the box than there used to be? Not likely. Seems like there’s always less, and for the same price. And it’s the same with laundry detergent, coffee and untold other products. When manufacturers want to boost the bottom line, they seem to find that it’s easy to give you a little less than you expect and hope you won’t notice. There’ve been some changes recently in your Suburban Life newspaper, too, that you might not have noticed. But at Suburban Life Media, we like to do things a little bit differently – we’re giving you more: • The Argyle Sweater, written by Scott Hilburn, is a comic that looks at the world from a little bit of a different bent. Here’s how Hilburn describes himself: “Living next door to a nuclear weapons testing facility as a child, I was exposed to high levels of intense radiation. The prolonged exposure to this radiation resulted in the development of special powers such as extraordinary drawing and writing capabilities.” So if you like your humor on the surreal side, make sure to look for it in the Classified section every week. • Will you need a jacket Saturday? I suppose no one really knows for sure. But the good folks at the National Weather Service are doing their best to try to map the course of the clouds, so we’ve added a weekend forecast on page 3 starting today. Whether you’re considering going to a Bears game or just wondering
whether to do some gardening, we’ve got a local forecast for the Hinsdale area. • Speaking of the Bears, is there a more trusted voice in the Chicago area on the topic of our beloved football squad than Hub Arkush? We don’t think there is. That’s why we’ve added a link to HubArkush. com to our home page onDave line, and once the NFL season Lemery begins, you can expect to see NFL insights and news from Hub and his team in your hometown newspaper – alongside the local high school sports coverage you expect from us. • And lastly, we’re sending out a daily email newsletter with top headlines, a daily weather forecast and some great shopping and restaurant deals from PlanitLife.com. It’s like a mini-newspaper in your email inbox. You can sign up at mysuburban life.com/email. It’s been exciting to bring all these new elements to your Suburban Life, and we’re not done yet. Do you have an idea for a feature you’d like to see? Feel free to drop me a line. We’ll never stop trying to make your newspaper even better, and we’d love for you to be a part of it!

Quinn signs bill allowing for new stormwater fee By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com
RICHARD U JORDAN Richard U Jordan of Cookeville, Tennssee, formerly from Downers Grove and Darien, passed away peacefully at his home August 9, 2013. He was born May 28, 1926, in Chicago, to Arnold and Mildred Jordan. He proudly served his county in WWII. He was proceeded in death by his beloved wife, Estelle (Cavanaugh). He is survived by his 4 sons, Larry (Marilyn), Alan (Sandra), Rick, and Tyrone (Jeannie). He was a special grandpa to Neil and Jason Jordan, Dan (Wendy) Jordan, April Jordan Naleway, Shannon Jordan and Christine Milakis, and great-grandpa of 8. His brother, Roger Jordan and sister, Dolores Valles will truly miss him. Richard owned and operated Automatic Engineering, a heating and air conditioning company, in Downers Grove, for many years. He was an avid auto racing fan and did some racing himself. He was active in the Lions Club, VFW post 503, American Legion and the Shriners. A memorial service will be held at a later date and his ashes will be interred at Arlington National
Gov. Pat Quinn has signed a bill allowing DuPage County to charge property owners a utility fee that would be based on the amount of stormwater displaced by their property. Switching over to a feebased system – stormwater services are currently funded through property taxes – could help alleviate some of the flooding problems that have plagued the area and better fund the DuPage County Stormwater Management Department, Quinn said in a statement. “Residents should be better protected from the flooding like we experienced this spring, and this other piece of legislation establishes a framework to improve their stormwater management,” he said. But the plan has already received mixed reviews. Agencies that are currently tax-exempt such as churches and schools would likely have to pay the fee, a potentially significant cost. In Downers Grove, where
village officials enacted a fee-based stormwater system Jan. 1, churches and other nonprofits have focused attention on a new municipal stormwater fee with petitions and public comments at village council meetings. Church and nonprofit leaders there say the fees have cut into their ability to provide services and assistance in the community. While the village of Downers Grove did cut property taxes nearly $2 million this year to account for its stormwater fee, DuPage County officials have not indicated that property taxes would decrease as the result of a new fee-based system. The county legislation has been likened to a utility bill of sorts and would base fees off of use, similar if not identical to the system the village of Downers Grove has adopted. Likewise, any potential future fee will involve an assessment of water displacement on property. Taxable features could include the property’s square footage of pavement. To offset some of the costs, credits could be offered
through permeable pavers, rain barrels, retention ponds and other measures that reduce stormwater run-off, according to DuPage County Stormwater Management Planning Committee Chairman Jim Zay. Another entity that could be substantially affected by any county stormwater fees is the DuPage County Forest Preserve, the county’s largest land owner. Representatives from the forest preserve could not be reached before press time. Zay said in his statement that the process of forming the legislation is “not something that the county will take lightly,” but that he also views the law change as a necessary one. “In the next few years, funding for our stormwater management program will be exhausted, so we need to work with the community to find a solution for this problem,” Zay said. “It’s the county’s responsibility to mitigate regional flooding, and this legislation provides us with a potential tool to fulfill our obligation to property owners.”

Hinsdale Central’s Brian Dolehide competes in an invite at Oak Meadows Golf Club on Tuesday. Dolehide and the Red Devils are looking to defend their 2012 state title this fall.
8BOYS GOLF PREVIEW
Red Devils begin state title defense By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com The 2013 boys golf season is underway and as teams across the area tee it up, the ultimate destination is the Bloomington-Normal area Oct. 18 to 19 for the state championship tournaments.
Hinsdale Central Red Devils Conference: West Suburban Silver Home course: Hinsdale Golf Club, 140 W. Chicago Ave., Clarendon Hills 2012 results: 1st in regional, 1st in sectional, 1st in state Coach: Jess Krueger Top golfers: Brian Dolehide, jr. Kenneth Li, so. Tom Olson, sr. Brendan O’Reilly, fr. What to watch: In the middle
of tryouts, head coach Jess Krueger still was looking for golfers to bolster the Red Devils’ depth. But depth might not be an issue with the kind of talent Central brings back from last year’s Class 3A state championship team. Brian Dolehide, Kenneth Li and Tom Olson were among the Red Devils’ top-four scoring golfers in both the regional and sectional tournaments last fall. Dolehide and Li had top-20 individual finishes at state. With that kind of front-line talent, Kruger is taking a bit of a hands-off approach with this team. “Just play your own game. Don’t push,” Krueger said when asked what coaching he needs to give his players. “They’re used to competing all summer so they know how to handle themselves on the course. After that, it’s just a matter of coming
together as a team.” Kruger said freshman Brendan O’Reilly was ready to jump into the fray this season, which started with two tournaments earlier this week and continues with Saturday’s Warren invite. The Red Devils have six invites scheduled through Sept. 7, so they will be tested in high-pressure tournament situations before the postseason starts. Central also will be tested in WSS play against 2012 state third-place team Lyons Township (Sept. 12 at home) and 2012 sectional qualifier York (Sept. 17 at York’s course). A repeat state title isn’t out of the question, but Krueger is focused on playing well. “I’d just like to play solid golf at the start of the season and get a little better each week so that by the time of regionals, sectionals and state, we’re all playing nice golf,” Krueger said. “We just want
to compete all the way through the season and play a little better each week.”
Hinsdale South Hornets Conference: West Suburban Gold Home course: Village Greens of Woodridge, 1575 W. 75th St., Woodridge 2012 results: 6th in regional Coach: Bruce Kendrick Top golfers: Mike Basso, sr. Caleb Jiles, sr. Greg Murray, sr. Pat Ormiston, sr. Brian Strumillo, sr. Jordan Urbancik, sr. Jeff Vaci, sr. What to watch: Experience and leadership shouldn’t be a problem for the Hornets this season – of the eight golfers listed on the varsity roster, seven are seniors. Six of those
were varsity players last fall: Michael Basso, Greg Murray, Pat Ormiston, Brian Strumillo, Jordan Urbancik and Jeff Vaci. Strumillo was a sectional and state qualifier, finishing tied for 46th in the state tournament. “We have a nice, senior-dominated team this year,” coach Bruce Kendrick said. The Hornets should be battled tested by the time the postseason starts with the regional tournament Oct. 8. They have eight invite tournaments on the schedule, including the Sept. 28 Hinsdale Central invite coming just ahead of the West Suburban Gold tourney Oct. 1. South also faces 2012 third-place team Lyons Township (Aug. 27), defending state champ Hindale Central (Aug. 29) and fellow WSG-contender Downers Grove South (Sept. 3) in consecutive dual meets.

8GIRLS GOLF PREVIEW
Hornets hope seniors lead successful season By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com Girls golfers from across the area are on the course for the 2013 season. The season has just started, but the goal for individuals and teams throughout the state is to make the trek to the Decatur area Oct. 18 to 19 for the Class A and AA state championship tournaments.
Hinsdale South Hornets Conference: West Suburban Conference Home course: Village Greens of Woodridge, 1575 W. 75th St., Woodridge 2012 results: 6th in regional Coach: Julie Sweet Top golfers: Samantha Buddig, sr. Haley Flemm, jr.
Kailey Hoel, so. Faith Most, sr. Anisha Pal, sr. Jorie Smith, sr. What to watch: Finding a No. 1 golfer didn’t take very long for the Hornets. Coach Julie Sweet probably had a pretty good idea of who it was going to be the start of preseason tryouts. “Samantha Buddig was our No. 2 golfer as a freshman and sophomore, and last year she and Jess [Sachs] were one and two together,” Sweet said. “She’s a real quality player.” Sachs was a sectional tournament qualifier last season, but she since has graduated. Buddig and senior classmates Faith Most, Anisha Pal and Jorie Smith will comprise the leadership group. Those four
seniors and junior Haley Flemm are familiar with Sweet, and the coach is familiar with what they are capable of. “It definitely makes it easier,” Sweet said. “I know their games and I know what they can improve on.” The senior-led group could help the Hornets earn a team sectional tournament berth this season, and by the time the postseason starts they should be battle tested after facing 2012 state qualifiers Hinsdale Central and Lyons Township, plus sectional qualifiers Naperville North, Providence and Oak Park-River Forest. “We are in the toughest conference in the state,” Sweet said of the West Suburban Conference, which combines teams
from both divisions into one group. “With Hinsdale Central, LT and OPRF, it’s a really tough conference. A top-four finish would be huge for us, and I’d love to get out of the regional as a team and I’d love to get somebody downstate.”
Hinsdale Central Red Devils Conference: West Suburban Conference Home course: Ruth Lake Country Club, 6200 S Madison St., Hinsdale 2012 results: 1st in regional, 1st in sectional, 4th in state Coach: Nick Latorre Top golfers: Cailee Beisswanger, sr. Madelynn Swank, sr. Zoe Wong, sr.
What to watch: Perennially one of the top teams in the state, the Red Devils will look to maintain that standing this season and are in good shape to do so as Cailee Beisswanger, Madelynn Swank and Zoe Wong return for their senior seasons. All three contributed during the 2012 postseason for Central. The season opens Monday at Glenbard West, and before the postseason arrives, the Red Devils will have faced some of their fellow state heavyweights, including a Sept. 16 dual against visiting Lyons Township that could decide the regular-season conference title. The Sept. 28 Naperville North invite will pit Central against the Huskies and other potential postseason foes.
Troiano joins Five Seasons as director of tennis SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA BURR RIDGE – If Tim Troiano has his way, his students will have the time of their lives while learning tennis. Named director of tennis at Five Seasons on Aug. 5, Troiano makes it a point to frame fun around hard work and passion for the sport. Troiano set about lightening the mood by donning an oversize tennis racket and hitting a jumbo tennis ball, but he certainly is serious about the sport. “I want to help players who are passionate about the game and who work hard,” Troiano said in a news release. “Tennis is an exciting sport and is for people with all sorts of ability levels, goals and dreams. And it’s a sport of a lifetime – you can play it during every stage of life. “It’s a coach’s job to teach and instill the mental, physical and emotional skills, and the techniques and training it takes to achieve that.” Troiano most recently spent six years at Hinsdale Racquet Club, where, as di-
rector of High Performance Tennis, he coached some of the top junior players in the country, the release stated. His 14-year coaching career also has included a two-year stint as the tennis director of the Outer Banks Health & Racquet Club in North Carolina. “Tim brings a dynamic energy and a great reputation that is well established in the area,” Five Seasons Chief Club Officer Bob Diamond said. “He’s passionate about tennis and working as a team. He’s a perfect fit for...Five Seasons.” The 36-year-old Troiano began playing tennis when he was 6 and made it his primary sport when he was 13. At Hoffman Estates High School, he was the team’s No. 1 singles MVP all four years. After attending Roosevelt University, which did not have a tennis team, Troiano briefly played on the pro satellite circuit in 2000 and 2001. Five Seasons will host a meet-and-greet with Troiano and other tennis staff members Sept. 7. The event is open to the public.

8Q&A WITH JOEL QUENNEVILLE
Coach basks in glow of second championship By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – Joel Quenneville had an extensive hockey playing career that spanned 14 NHL seasons, plus time in other professional leagues. But in Chicago, he is known more for what he does behind the bench than on the ice. When the Hinsdale resident coached the Blackhawks to the 2010 Stanley Cup, he helped end a 49-year championship drought, which was the longest in hockey at the time. In June, Quenneville guided the Blackhawks to another title, and they will look to repeat again next season when training camp opens Sept. 12. SUBURBAN LIFE: Has there been any down time for you this summer? JOEL QUENNEVILLE: It’s been a very short summer. We went back to Connecticut for a couple weeks, and it felt nice to get away. SL: What was it like to bring the Cup to the Hinsdale Fourth of July parade? JQ: That wasn’t my day with the Cup, but I was fortunate that the Cup was in town that day and I was able to bring it to the parade. It was a great parade. There was a nice turnout and there was a lot of enthusiasm from everyone.
About Joel Quenneville Age: 54 Residence: Hinsdale Years coaching: 16 Teams coached: St. Louis, Colorado, Chicago Coaching record (wins and losses only): 660-389 Record with Chicago (wins and losses only): 222-106 SL: What was it about the 2012-13 team that allowed it to start and finish the season so well? JQ: It was a condensed year and we had no idea how things were going to start. I think the guys had a great mindset all year. We had a couple of goals that we set forth. We wanted to be tough to play against, we wanted to keep the puck out of our zone and we wanted to see our special teams improve. The guys’ approach was great. We got off to an amazing start, and you have to commend the guys’ approach the whole season. SL: What moment most defines last season for you? JQ: I think that this year was one of those years that was just so unbelievable. We played at a high rate but we didn’t have to face much adversity. Being down 3-1 to Detroit [in the playoffs], and I thought we were

We worked our way through it and got back to our winning ways. SL: Are you going to miss playing Detroit six times a year now that they are in the other conference? JQ: That rivalry has been tremendous. We’ve had some great games with them, two of them being Game 7 [of the play-
offs] and the regular-season game in Detroit [2-1 shootout win]. There’s passion in the rivalry between the cities and the fan bases. It’s electrifying. Hopefully we get to play them in not too long in the playoffs [in the Stanley Cup Finals]. SL: How is the short offseason going to impact your chance to repeat as champions? JQ: Our league is so competitive. Anybody can beat anybody else at any time. Look at Boston. They were down three goals in Game 7 [against To-
ronto] and came back to win. Things are so close. Now the division rivalry is part of the playoffs. We’re going to continue to be the target, but I like the group we have here. Guys want to be here, and they want to win. That’s their competitive juices. They always have something to prove. SL: How did the 2010 title and 2013 title compare? JQ: They were different, but they were both nice. They were two different teams. The core was in place, but at the same time we had so many guys on the team who were new to winning the Cup, so it was to have them experience that. The depth of the team might have been higher in 2010, but this group had more contributions across the board and more balance. SL: How will the Olympic break factor into this season? JQ: We’ll probably look at it a lot like last season when rest was so important and practice time was down a little bit. We had to rest guys and manage minutes to make sure they were ready to play down the stretch. For guys that compete in the Olympics, I think that’s going to be the reality again. We’ll see how it plays out, but after the Olympics we might have to manage minutes even more for the guys that play.

ack-to-school time can be bittersweet: You start to miss the freedom of summer but are looking forward to seeing your friends, teachers and classroom again. Here are the top three reasons to look forward to school again:
A is for adventures

School is about more than just learning and getting along with your teachers and fellow students — it’s about adventures. You’re learning about things nearby and far away. You’re working on new skills, reading about foreign lands and discovering exciting new things every day. Think of how many adventures you can go on without leaving your desk!
B is for buddies The best part of school? Making
new friends and seeing your old friends again. Not much is better than the excitement of the first day of school and meeting new people who could become your best friends one day. It’s also about rediscovering old friends, and learning about those you could know better. What can you do to learn more about someone in your class today?
C is for cranium
reasons you’re excited for back to school: one that begins with the letter A, one that begins with the letter B, and one that begins with the letter C. Try to think of new words instead of using the examples above. A is for _________________ B is for _________________ C is for _________________
Time to use your brain again! Over summer, you used your brain in a different way: by running and jumping, playing games and being creative. But your cranium needs a diferent kind of workout that you get from school: memorization, structured learning, stretching it to learn more diicult tasks. Get ready to get smart. What have you learned already today? Now it’s your turn. In the space in the next column, write your own ABCs of back to school. Think of three
Then draw a picture that illustrates your letters and the words you chose for each. Teacher tip: Assign a letter to each student in the classroom to write about the best thing about back to school, and their goals for the school year. Have students write a short paragraph about each item, and illustrate their letter on a big piece of craft paper. STOCKXCHNG.COM/MCN ILLUSTRATION

The mother and son team make up Higgins Glass Studio, 33 E. Quincy, entrusted to the Wimmers to carry on the art crafted by their long time mentors, Fran and Michael Higgins, who began the company in 1948. Louise and Jonathan agree that it was Fran’s ideas and Michael’s energy and ingenuity that led these two huge talents to start their work out if their Chicago apartment in 1948. Over the years their art sold in such major retailers as Marshall Field’s, Georg Jensen and Bullocks Wilshire, the very high end store in the California based department store chain. In 1966, the Higgins decided to return to private studio work and set up their offices in Riverside. The website notes that “here they were free to set their own goals, meet their own standards and design in the direction their hearts and minds led them.” There’s a lot of history in Higgins, and the Wimmers are proud of their work and the company.
