Helping to help others Fundraiser set for local Red Cross By Donna Barker dbarker@bcrnews.com

PRINCETON — Bureau County residents will have the opportunity this week to help ensure the outreach of the American Red Cross in Bureau County. The fifth annual wine and beer tasting event, sponsored by the American Red Cross of Bureau County, will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at A Hundred Acres Orchard and Market, two miles west of Princeton off Route 6. Describing Friday’s annual fundraiser, Bureau County Red Cross Director Lori Compton said event-goers will be able to sample beer and wine from around the country and appetizers from local food vendors, in keeping with an All-American theme. The evening will feature a wine pull, live music and a 7 p.m. art auction. More than 20 auction items will be available from a wide variety of area artists, including paintings and water colors, handcrafted ornamental boxes, abstracts and pottery and photographs, Compton said, adding there will be something for everything. “Any of these items you would be proud to put on display in your home or office,” Compton said. “Plus everything goes for a good cause.” Tickets for Friday’s event are $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Advance tickets are available by calling 815-8792231 or at the Prouty Community Building or Central Bank in Princeton, Spring Valley City Bank or Citizens First State Bank in Walnut. Compton said Friday’s fundraiser is important for the ongoing work of the local Red Cross chapter. Approximately 20 percent of the local Red Cross budget comes from the Bureau County United Way, and the remaining 80 percent comes from individuals and fundraisers. No state or federal money is received. The Bureau County Red

PRINCETON — Bureau County is one of 24 Illinois counties approved for federal disaster aid for local governments following the heavy rains and flooding in April. Gov. Pat Quinn made the announce-

ment on Thursday, thanking the Obama administration for approving the state’s request for federal aid to help local governments in 24 counties recovering from the recent flooding. The federal declaration allows local governments in those counties to seek reimbursement for 75 percent of their eligible flood-related expenses, Quinn said.

In making his announcement, Quinn said the local governments in those counties incurred more than $40 million in costs for their flood fight, public safety and recovery efforts. The 24 approved counties each met the federal threshold of $3.45 per capita.

PRINCETON — Anniversaries are meant to be celebrated, and that’s just what the Festival 56 theater group is planning to do this weekend. As a kick-off to its 10th season, the Festival 56 theater group has announced a weekend of special events, with those events featuring Broadway performer Robert Petkoff, formerly of Princeton. On Thursday, Festival 56 co-founder and Executive Artistic Director Dexter Brigham said when the theater group started looking at ways to celebrate its 10th season, the group wanted to have someone who is very successful in show business and who represents the values of Festival 56, with that goal personified in Robert Petkoff. A graduate of Princeton High School, Petkoff launched his professional career in Shakespeare and then moved into musicals. The way he balances musical theater with the great classical theater represents the values of Festival 56 perfectly, Brigham said. On Friday evening, Petkoff will be the guest of honor at a private reception, followed by an anniversary cabaret for the public at 7:30 p.m. at the Grace Performing Arts Center, at 316 S. Main St. in Princeton. On Saturday evening, Petkoff will be the guest of honor again at an anniversary celebration dinner at 6 p.m. at A Hundred Acres Orchard and Market, two miles west of Princeton off Route 6. The evening will include drinks, a four-course catered dinner, music, speeches and toasts, and an onstage conversation between Brigham and Petkoff.
