Fitness center hosts weight loss competition

By AIMEE BARROWS msleditorial@shawmedia.com ADDISON – Erin Chapa, fitness and aquatics supervisor for the Addison Park District, admits it’s not easy working at a fitness club as an overweight woman.

So she created the Club Fitness Community Weight Loss Challenge to help herself, as well as the community, shed unwanted pounds.

“I was a little greedy [when I came up with the idea],” Chapa said. “I started it to have group support and accountability.”

The challenge, which began Jan. 8, is an eight-week program open to the community, as well as Club Fitness members. This is the second year of the program, and there are 80 participants, which is the maximum number, Chapa said.

Last year, 60 people participated, and the group lost about 500 pounds. Chapa lost 10 pounds in last year’s program and hopes to lose more this year, she said.

There was one important change to this year’s program.

Club Fitness hosted the Challenge before the holidays last year, and it lasted for 12 weeks.

But this year, they moved it to after the holidays to help people get started on their New Year’s resolutions, she said.

“It’s a great way to get started on a healthy lifestyle. We get them in a routine they can maintain by themselves,” Chapa said. “They get comfortable with the fitness center. We’re setting people up for a lifestyle change, not just a quick fix. If you lose the weight quickly, you can just gain it back. So we give them building blocks.”

Each participant is put on a team with three others, and they meet every Thursday night with their assigned Club Fitness trainer. The group

works out together, and the trainer provides them with exercises they can do on their own during the week.

Chapa said there is no required diet, but the trainers offer nutrition advice. Each participant is encouraged to keep a food journal, she said.

“It makes them more accountable,” Chapa said. “People don’t want to write down that they ate a whole pizza by themselves.”

Frank DiTuri, lead personal trainer at Club Fitness, said the program covers specific topics, such as portion sizes or differences between cardiovascular and resistance training, at each meeting. Many partici-

pants have a lot of misconceptions, and they hope to “set the record straight,” he said.

“It makes people aware of what they need to do to feel better, lose weight and get in shape,” DiTuri said. “A lot of folks are intimidated at first, but they feel more comfortable in this setting.”

Addison resident Christine Stamison, 55, lost 17 pounds in last year’s challenge. She said she’s gained a few of those pounds back and joined this year to lose even more weight. She said she likes the program because the trainers give her exercises she can do anywhere.

“I needed a kick-start to lose weight,” Stamison said.

“But at the end of the day, it’s up to you. You have to go to the gym, put the right food in your mouth. It’s personal responsibility. They give you advice and training, but you have to put it into effect.”

Stamison added another benefit of the program is getting to know other community members, and she has made several new friends.

“It’s my favorite program,” Chapa said. “Everyone is so accepting. The bonds that are formed, how happy it makes people. Everyone feels successful no matter how much or how little they lost; they know they did something.”

Venier: As an artist, I have played countless shows and have been in front of many different audiences, but nothing has compared to the level of vulnerability and nerve-wracking nature that an audition of this caliber brings.

Venier: Don’t follow mine, make your own. It’s quite simple. For years I’ve been watching artists I look up to making progress in the music industry, so I try to follow what they’re doing. In my experience, however, the times I feel like I am finally making progress is when I stop watching and literally get out there and start doing it my own way.

I am an advocate of carving your own trail, and sometimes going completely against the grain in the process. You’ll get more genuine respect that way. That being said, there’s always credit to give to others who help you along ... remembering them is also a very important part of the process.

Venier: The audition was kind of a last-minute thing for me. I was living in Nashville at the time and had heard that Idol was in town for auditions for their upcoming show. I was at a place where I felt that I had nothing to lose, so I thought why not? I was able to connect with one of the producers of the show and set up an audition. All this will wreak more havoc on our carbon footprint. How does that improve our health and well-being? If we keep on this pace, the city will have to hire more police and more firemen, build more schools, and then what? More six-story buildings? It’s a vicious circle, and the policies that were in place that worked for the city and its citizens for a long time are being ignored.

Sadly, we are asleep at the wheel. My property now floods because of more concrete, more asphalt and poor engineering.

Unless we want more parking lots and more six-story buildings littered across our fair city, we need to pay attention to this stuff and adjust things at the next elections because these people are not looking out for the best interest of the citizens of Elmhurst.

To the editor: We’ve lived in this area for 25 years and bought a home in Elmhurst 20 years ago because of the green space, parks and schools. Now, our leaders are feeding us this nonsense about how good it is for the city to have more downtown residents who could shop and eat at local businesses and restaurants.

They also say that this will benefit the health of the residents as well as the general public with fewer vehicle miles traveled, which decreases the carbon footprint?

The reality is more people in one small area mean more consumption of everything across the board, not just for the merchants of the area. The downtown area is the traffic nightmare of the city and will get worse. Consider the traffic congestion on the street of people trying to get to their homes who sit there with the cars

Water damage shuts down DuPage Children’s Museum

dfarnham@shawmedia.com NAPERVILLE – The DuPage Children’s Museum in Naperville is closed while it cleans up and repairs damage caused by a flood last week.

Museum spokeswoman Dee Dee McDevitt said a large water main on the exterior of the building burst sometime between the evening of Jan. 8 and the morning of Jan. 9, causing water damage on all three levels. “[On Jan. 9], the staff that comes in to turn on the water tables walked into a stream everywhere,” she said.

The museum is expected to be closed for at least a couple of weeks, and all museum programs have been canceled through Feb. 8.

McDevitt said the museum is not sure if the weather caused the water main break, and professionals were immediately brought to the museum to assess the damage.

While the cost of the repairs is not yet known, she said the financial implications will be significant and the museum will be reaching out for donations.

“The timing [of the closing] couldn’t be worse because during January, February and March, the museum experiences a high level of traffic.”

The Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry will celebrate its 96th Annual Awards on Jan. 30, so I thought I’d take this opportunity to expound on the value chambers provide to their communities in general and member businesses in particular.

In Elmhurst, our 600-member chamber serves as the only voice of business to elected officials COMMUNITY and city administrators, often VOICE providing a counter balance to the wants of property-taxJohn R. paying homeowners and other Quigley constituents – most of whom fail to recognize business’s daily role in their economic lives.

Some chambers endorse candidates for public office and/or contribute financially to those they support via political action committees. While nonpolitical in nature, our chamber is legislatively active at the local, township, county, state and national levels.

In 2014, our chamber worked in partnership with the United States Chamber of Commerce and Illinois Chamber of Commerce on legislative issues – ranging from minimum wage to public pensions to workers’ compensation – impacting our member businesses. In Elmhurst, we’ve spoken out on taxes (property and retail sales), parking, traffic, redevelopment and more.

Our chamber continued its support of the city’s public-private partnership projects in Elmhurst City Centre for mixed-use redevelopment around Hahn Street and construction of the Addison Parking Deck and endorsed proposed city ordinance changes to building height, setbacks and parking for downtown Elmhurst.

In some communities, chambers serve as a marketing partner with member businesses. Since 2011, our chamber has partnered with the city on the Got It! in Elmhurst shop local informational campaign. Thanks to an automobile driven recovering economy, Elmhurst’s revenue from retail sales taxes has increased by hundreds of thousands of dollars year after year, resulting in a drop in the 2015 property tax rate. Our website, elmhurstchamber. org, and smartphone user-friendly mobile Web page draws some 1.5 million hits annually from 100,000-plus visits, and our social media posts include Facebook (565 likes) and Twitter (873 followers). The Elmhurst Community Directory and Explore Elmhurst Street Map are direct-mailed to some 19,100 residences, businesses and post office boxes. Got It! greeter totes are hand-delivered each year to some 600 new residents. In some communities, chambers serve as the organizer of civic and community special events. Our chamber organizes Elmhurst’s Memorial Day Parade, assists with the St. Patrick’s Day and Spring Road Pet parades and sponsors the Elmhurst Cycling Classic.

Connie Caruso’s Elmhurst living room will now be much quieter after health issues prompted her to retire from a 40-year career as a piano teacher. But the 78-year-old’s contributions to music in the Elmhurst community will be heard for many years. Some 400 students learned on the pianos in her home. Caruso’s legacy is destined to live on every time one of them sits down and plays.

Here’s to all those who help others. The Elmhurst community and the United Community Concerns Association worked together to provide meals for 255 families with children in Elmhurst District 205 schools during the holiday season. About 400 volunteers packed and delivered 1,200 boxes of food. In 2014, the organization raised more than $82,000 to help feed families and seniors.

lem-based learning that tackles a real problem of voter turnout is the kind of learning that is going to help prepare these students for when they grow up. Students should be prepared for actual real world problems, and not just stick to reading, writing and arithmetic. The kind of thinking that problems should just be “left to the adults” is somewhat old-fashioned, which can be supported by the fact that the adults of today’s America have the most unproductive Congress, in addition to increasing problems with poverty. We all must remember the students of today are the adults of tomorrow.

EDWARD J. VERTOVEC

Paul C. Brown, 92, formerly of Lombard, passed away on January 8, 2015.

Edward J. Vertovec of Elmhurst, IL died on the 12th of January at the age of 91. Ed was born in Elmhurst on March 13th, 1923, to Frank and Caroline Vertovec. He grew up in Elmhurst with his 5 siblings: Fran, Frank, Carl, Ray, and Jean. He later graduated from Elmhurst College and received his law degree from DePaul University. During World War II, he served in the Air Force, specializing in radar navigation training. Following his service, Ed married his beloved wife Betty J. Pace on June 21, 1947. According to Ed, Betty made their 67 years of marriage total happiness and bliss.

Ed lived and maintained a local law practice in Elmhurst where he championed numerous public works projects, including the advancement of the Chamber of Commerce and the Elmhurst Park District, along with Co-Chairing the Underpass Committee.

In 1988 Ed and Betty retired to Skidaway Island in Savannah, Georgia. Ed devoted countless hours to his lifelong love of volunteer work, donating his time to multiple organizations including The Chatham County Victim Witness Assistance Program, The Chatham County Juvenile Court Panels (which assisted judges in caring for minors), The Village Library at Skidaway, and The Howard Young Medical Center in Minocqua, Wisconsin. Ed was presented the Thousand Points of Light Volunteer Award by President George H.W. Bush in a ceremony in Salt Lake City. When Ed and Betty moved back to Elmhurst in 2013, he began searching for the right volunteer job. After an incredible experience spending a day in Washington DC on the Honor Flight (with his brother, Ray, amongst many other veterans), Ed became involved in aiding local veterans through his work at The Lexington including organizing a lecture from four Battle of the Bulge survivors just last week.

Ed will be remembered for his many great passions including travel, sports, reading, and history.

His life-long emphasis on fitness and working out began many years ago at the Elmhurst YMCA with his close friends, The Jolly Boys, and then continued at The Courts where he also played tennis several times a week. He continued playing a biweekly game of tennis until he was

After retiring from most team sports, he happily sat in bleachers through rain, snow, sleet, sun and heat watching his descendants play a wide variety of sports. For the past 40 years, Ed and Betty also spent countless hours enjoying the comforts of their lake home in the North Woods of Wisconsin with family and friends.

To know Ed was to love Ed. He was a devoted husband, father, (great) grandfather, and friend. His frequent greeting of, “ Hello this is sweet and lovable Ed Vertovec,” always rang true. Ed was generous, kind, gentlemanly, positive, brilliant, and humble. He always had a smile on his face and a song on his tongue. He wrote amazing poetry for family occasions, his last being his beloved wife's birthday, where he had the entire room in tears. Ed lived his long life with enthusiasm and optimism. He was always thinking of others and what he could do to help them. His sage advice was welcomed even this week. Ed will be missed more than words can express, but he has made the world a better place. His spirit and his goodness will live on in all whose lives he touched.

Ed is survived by Betty and their four children - Kristine (Glenn) Rosenberger, Joe (Nancy Ebaugh), Mary, and Ann (David Audley).

Additionally, Ed was an enduring grandfather to nine grandchildren: Tiffani, Brian, Allison, Christopher, Hannah, Sam, Jordan, Ben, and Wil, and three great grandchildren: Hope, Collin and Andrew. He is also survived by his brother, Ray (Anne) and his sister, Jean (Roman) Schmitt.

Cronin touts economic progress during State of the County address

By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com The future of DuPage County may look bright in many ways, but there are still many challenges ahead, according to the county board chairman.

In front of a crowd of elected officials, chambers of commerce and businesses, Dan Cronin gave an economically focused State of the County address Thursday in Woodridge.

Cronin presented remarks and answered questions at the event sponsored by county economic development organization Choose DuPage and supported by chambers in Woodridge, Downers Grove, Darien, Hinsdale and Lisle.

The Chairman said he welcomed the opportunity to deliver such an address to so many in the business world, saying the “relationship between DuPage and our business community is vital.”

And Cronin believed that connection was flourishing, touting a 4.5 percent unemployment rate, the lowest in the region thanks to a conscious effort to create a business-friendly environment, he said.

“I do think we at the county all join in a chorus of voices that really create a culture out here in DuPage County ... that does really and truly convey the message that ‘We want your business, we support business and we value economic growth,” he said.

Cronin said manufacturing was climbing in the county, with 15 straight months of industrial vacancy rate drops through May 2014, and he projects a steady 3.75 percent growth in county sales tax revenue. The county also retains a AAA bond rating from all three major credit agencies, which is the case for fewer than 1 percent of all counties in the U.S., he said.

The county is intending to eliminate a quarter-cent sales tax in 2016 as the maligned DuPage Water Commission

transitions to a self-sustaining utility, a mirror of Cronin’s Accountability, Consolidation and Transparency initiative dedicated to reducing the size and cost of local government.

The ACT initiative’s successes are highlighted by the county’s continued commitment to a balanced budget, the 45 government jobs that have been cut and more than $30.5 million the county has saved under Cronin’s watch, he said.

“But our movement in DuPage is about more than cost cutting,” he said. “We are in the business of growing.

Growing ideas, growing hightech manufacturing, growing tomorrow’s businesses.”

That is especially important with the changing demographics in the county, he said.

Nearly 175,000 residents are considered low income by federal poverty standards, and more than 16 percent of children in DuPage County are food insecure.

Cronin pointed specifically to the Rev3 tech and manufacturing incubator, the Elgin-O’Hare Western Access Project, a new regional global marketing initiative to help spur international exports and a recent U.S. Commerce Department designation the region will be eligible to apply for $1.3 billion in federal grants to support job creation.

All would be important to give those in need “hand ups” and not “handouts,” he said.

Greg Bedalov, president and CEO of Choose DuPage, said the marketing initiative was especially exciting for him, saying in 10 years working in economic development, he had “never seen the type of regional cooperation and collaboration that’s happening right now.”

He has high hopes area counties will be able to work together even more to build a more stable economic future through improved marketing, transportation and investment.

Two Brothers brewpub worth the hunt WARRENVILLE – Two Brothers Tap House in Warrenville isn’t as showy a dining venue as its landmark Roundhouse digs in Aurora, but gives patrons a ringside seat at the actual brewery. The tasty fare complements not only Two Brothers’ extensive creations and sampling opportunities, but more than 50 additional bottled artisan brews from the U.S. and around the world.

Savvy fans of the craft beer enterprise, which has been growing by hops and bounds since brothers Jim and Jason Ebel took the leap in 1996, know they can time a weekend meal with a free tour of the brewery. They’re offered at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Saturdays, and 1:30 p.m. Sundays, with no reservations needed.

But added circus aside, the Tap House is an attraction in its own right. Tables, booths and high-tops dot the industrial space, whose walls sport giant, framed versions of a variety of Two Brothers’ artistic beer labels.

The restaurant notes that all the meats are organic, and dishes are made from scratch.

An added perk is that the kitchen serves late, which my companion and I took advantage of after a busy Saturday.

Scanning the menu, I read the Brewer’s Reuben beef brisket is brined in-house for seven days and was sad to hear it had sold out earlier in the evening. But then I noticed the pulled pork, which is prepared with dry rubbed pork butt smoked over apple wood for five hours.

The meat was tender and perfectly spiced in a Lexington-style vinegar sauce. It was such a generous portion that I would have liked a bit more of the coleslaw that topped it in a zesty interplay of texture and flavor. In a nice touch for the wheat intolerant, gluten-free rolls can be substituted at no extra charge.

Thomas’ effort not enough for York

By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – Jayvon Thomas provided a big spark, but it was not enough for York’s boys basketball team Jan. 9.

The senior guard scored at will during a West Suburban Silver conference clash against Downers Grove North, recording a gamehigh 23 points and helping keep the deficit at one through three quarters. But the Dukes could not match the height and size of North and were outmuscled 25-18 in the final frame, eventually falling 56-48.

Still, after the game, both head coaches praised Thomas’ performance.

“Jayvon [Thomas] is as explosive of a player as I’ve seen in a long time,” DGN coach Jim Thomas said. “He has that extra burst that is unreal. Coming in, we knew he was going to be a tough matchup for us.”

“He’s going to get his,” York coach Vince Doran said. “He’s a strong, confident player who knows how to score. For us, it’s about getting other players to step up and rise to the occasion.”

Aside from Thomas’ 23, the only other York player to score in double figures was Jack Julian, who posted 11 points off the bench.

“I thought this was [Julian’s] best game of the year,” Doran said. “That was a real positive sign for us.”

3-point shooting kept the Dukes in the game early, as York led 11-10 after the first quarter and went into halftime with the game tied 22-22.

Trailing by six late in the third quarter, York went on a 5-0 run to close the frame, punctuated by a three-point play by Thomas.

But the fourth quarter was all Downers Grove North. The Trojans began the final eight minutes with a 3-pointer, then hit a number of free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

The loss to DGN was the first game for York (8-5, 1-2) since posting a 2-2 record at its own Jack Tosh Holiday Classic.

The Dukes now go on the road to face Oak Park-River Forest at 7:30 p.m. today before playing four games (two each Saturday and Monday) at the MLK Jr. tournament at Wheaton Warrenville South.
