Morethan2millionAmericansage 50 andolder sufferfromAMD,anditis especiallyprevalentamongCaucasian women.“Youdon’t want toreach your40s and realizethat you’re beginning to have visionproblems,” says Dr. Kimberly Reed, optometristand OcularNutrition Societyboardmember.“Followinga fewsimple recommendationscanhelp support yourvision-and your family’svision-nowandin thefuture.”
Reed offers thesetips formaintaining eyehealthand supportingvisioninthelong term:
1. See yourdietin color
Manybrightly coloredfruitsand vegetables containluteinand zeaxanthin, two powerfulantioxidantsthat researchshows arebeneficialinmaintainingmacular health.Intake of 12mgperday of luteinand zeaxanthin offers thebestprotection, butonly 10 percent of Americansaregettingenough of theseessentialnutrients, according to theAmericanOptometricAssociation. For weeklymealplanningthis year, choose colorfulfruitsand vegetablesthatprovidetheseimportantantioxidants, likespinach, kale, and otherdarkleafygreens,as wellas corn, peas, broccoli, and orangeand redpeppers.
2.Omega-3 fatty acids for eyehealth
AstudypublishedintheAmericanJournal of ClinicalNutritionshowedthat peoplewithhigherintakes of omega-3 fatty acidsmay experiencealowerincidence of dry eye syndrome(DES). For patientswho suffer regularlyfromdry eyes,omega-3 intakecansignificantlyimprove symptomsandincreasequality tearproduction. Adultsshouldget at least1,500mgperday of DHAandEPAeither by consuming fatty fish, suchas salmon, mackerel, and sardines,or takinghigh-qualityfishoiland algae supplements. Besureto checkwith yourphysicianif youare takingmedications thataffectbloodclottingbeforeincreasing yourintake of omega-3s to thislevel. For womenwhoarepregnantornursing,DHAisanessentialnutrient to supportinfant visualdevelopment.
3. Remember yourvitaminsandminerals
Anarray of vitaminsandmineralsalsoplayanimportant roleinmaintaining eye health. Forinstance,AandBvitaminsperformmany complexandcriticalfunctions throughoutthebody, includingthe eyes. And,according to astudypublishedin Ophthalmology, vitaminsCandE,whichfunctionasantioxidants, arealsoessential to eyehealthandhave beenshown to impacttheprogression of certain forms of AMD. Finally, zinchelpsdelivervitaminAfromtheliver to the retinainorder to producemelanin, aprotectivepigmentinthe eyes.Get yourfill of at leastfiveservings of colorful fruitsand vegetables,as wellasnutsandlegumes, perday to obtaintheseessential vitaminsandminerals.
Evenwhenstriving tofollowanoptimaldiet,it’s difficult to getthe recommendedamounts of essentialvitaminsandnutrientsfrom foodalone, sonutritional supplementscanplayanimportant roleinmaintaining eyehealth. Severalproducts specifically formulated to support eyehealthandvisionare available, soask your eye healthprofessional at yournextappointment.
If yousufferfromasingleone of these torturous symptoms-numbness, tingling, burningorsharpnerve pain, then readon.Anewbreakthrough treatment couldchange yourlife.
Neuropathy canaffect every part of yourlife- walking, sitting, sleeping, socializing, yourability to enjoy your relationshipsand so muchmore. If youhave tired “everything” (Anodynetherapy, physicaltherapy, Lyrica, Neurotinor othermeds)withoutgettingthe results you want thenthis maybethemost important informationthat you ever read. Thereisa simple reasonthatmost treatments fail, because at best theyonly cover up your symptomsanddonothelp yourdamagednerves.
Peripheralneuropathy isa conditionthataffectspeoplein every walk of life. Itis estimatedthat20millionAmericansand60% of diabetics sufferfromthisdisorder. Therearemanykinds of neuropathy, the symptoms of whichincludeburning, tingling, weakness, numbness, paralysis, anddull to excruciating pain- especiallyinthehandsand feet.
Althoughmanyneuropathieshave noknown causes, neuropathy is often associatedwith other conditions.Examplesare:Diabetes, shingles, toxins, autoimmunedisorders, bulgingdiscs that compress onnerves, spinal stenosis, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, andpoornutrition. Statindrugsandchemotherapy canalso causeneuropathy.
Forthelastthree yearsDr.Susan Kelenyi,DC of Glen Ellyn,ILhas worked extensivelywithperipheralneuropathy patients.Dr. Kelenyidescribes peripheralneuropathy asdamage to thenerves, whichtransmitsinformationfromthebrainandspinal cord to the rest of thebody.“This can resultin pain, loss of feeling, andinability to controlmuscles, suchas difficultywith walking. As withany other condition, thereisno “onesize fitsall” remedy forthose sufferingfromneuropathiesandtreatment may varydependingonthe causeand severity.”However, manyindividuals cananddofind reliefusingnatural remedies. AndthisiswhereDr. Kelenyi stepsin.
Ofthemany causes of peripheralneuropathies”, says Dr. Kelenyi,“a majorone comesfromametabolic condition. You cannotdrug your way out of ametabolic condition. It requires achangeinlifestyle.”
Dr. Kelenyi says,“Dietiscrucialwhenaddressingperipheralneuropathy, especiallyindiabeticsandautoimmunedisorders. Harmful foods to be avoidedincludealcohol, sugar, processed foods, fast foods, junk foods, sodas of all types, foodssprayedwithpesticides, andtrans-fatty acids. Sweetenersandadditivescontainedindiet sodaandprocessed foods suchasMSGandaspartame cannegativelyimpactthenervous system.”
As aBoard EligibleChiropracticNeurologist, Dr. Kelenyiperformsspecificmetabolicandneurologic tests to helpdeterminewhatis causingthe problem. Therearea fewprimary types of neuropathies:Largeorsmall diameterorbothas wellasmotor. Ifjerkingisinvolvedthenit canbeas muchaprobleminthebraindue to trans-neuraldegenerationasitisin theperipheralnerve. Athoroughand comprehensive examensures an accurate diagnosis.
Dr. Kelenyi states thatherperipheralneuropathyrecoveryprogramisa combination of differentcuttingedge techniquesandprotocols.“We use revolutionarybreakthroughprotocolsinthetreatment of Peripheral Neuropathy…one of thetherapies offeredisHorizontal Therapywhich isthelatest, breakthroughinthe science of electro-medicineandthe most advancedand effective form of bioelectrictreatment available to date. I’m veryproud to bethefirst inthearea to offerthis to my patients ...painmanagementwithoutdrugsorsurgery to getlasting results.”
Additionaltherapiesmayinclude: oxygen, vibration, spinaldecompression, coldlasertherapyalongwithbrain balancetherapies to createa layeredapproach to “wakeup”thenervesso they canfunctionagain and re-educatenerve pathways thathave gone“hay-wire”.
Dr. Kelenyi says,“Our solutionsarenon-drug,non-surgicalapproaches, thatare researched basedand basedonpriorclinicalsuccess. The reason we achieve excellentoutcomesisbecause we take bothametabolicandneurologicalapproachinourprogram.”She says it’s a very rewarding way of practicing.“Wegetchronicallyillpeople comingfrom all overtheChicagolandarea, evenout of state,to ourclinic. Themost important thing forthesepatients is results. We get results.”
