Thisaffair,calledtheMayor’sCommunityCharityBall, isawayforthegroupstoparticipateinasinglefundraiser tothebenefitofeachofthem, ratherthanhosttheirown smallereventsthatcouldultimatelycompeteagainsteach other.
“Ithinkthatfriendshipand unityreallyunderscoresthe Addisonadvantage,”Mayor RichVeenstrasaid.
Thisyearmarksthe24th timeAddisonwillhostthe charityball,andwhilethisis onlyVeenstra’ssecondyearas host,hehasattendedeachand everyoneofthem.
Proceedsfromtheballwill goto18organizationsthatdirectlyservetheAddisoncommunity.Attendeesoftheevent areabletodecidewhichorganizationsthey’dliketobenefit fromtheticketstheybuyto attend.Theyalsocanchoose tobuyraffleticketsfroma certainorganizationorbidon silentauctionprizesprovided byaparticularnonprofit.

ChelleO’Connell,who servesastheWomen’sClub ofAddisonrepresentativeon theplanningcommittee,said she’dliketoseeothercommunitiesfollowAddison’slead.
“It’stheonlycommunity I’veseenwherealotofthevolunteergroupscometogether,” saidO’Connell,whoisamemberofthechambersofcommerceinElmhurst,Lombard andVillaPark.“Ithinkmore communitiesshoulddoit.”
TheballisamajorfundraiserfortheWomen’sClub, which,liketheKiwanisClub, usesthemoneyraisedfor scholarshipsanddonationsto otherlocalcharities.
In2013,nearly$60,000was raisedbytheball,andtheAddisoncommunityhopestotop thatthisyear,Veenstrasaid.
Thisyear’seventwillhighlightthevillageofAddison’s anniversarywithaperfor-
mancebyAddisonsingerand songwriterJoeKalishofaspecialsonghewrotejustforhis town.Ballticketssoldonbehalf ofthevillagealsowillbenefita charityoutsidethe18participatinginthisyear’sevent:the AddisonHistoricalSociety.
Asacommunityevent,everyoneinAddisonisinvited toattend,whethertheyare affiliatedwiththebenefiting organizationsornot.
Ticketscost$80,andthey includeanopenbar,dinner andentertainment.
“It’sopentotheentire community,sowedefinitely encourageeveryonetocome andshareinthefunandfestivities,”Veenstrasaid.
Becausesomanygroups arepartoftheevent,itisimportantforsomeonetotake thelead,andthevillageitself ismorethanhappytoplay thatrole,themayorsaid.
“Thatmightbetheultimatesuccessoftheprogram, thatthevillageitselfhastaken leadershipinorganizingitand movingitforward,”Veenstra said.

The$25,000gazeboproject istheresultofapartnership betweenthevillage,Lombard HistoricalSocietyandMuellerfamily.Afundraiserwas startedbythefamilyin2012to helppayforthememorial.So far,$12,000hasbeenraised,accordingtothememorial’swebsiteatmuellermemorial.org.

GLENELLYN –Glenbard TownshipHighSchoolDistrict 87introduceditsproposed taxlevyfor2014atitsOct.27 BoardofEducationmeeting. AssistantSuperintendent forBusinessServicesChris McClainsaidthedistrictwill request1.9percentmorein propertytaxesfromDuPage Countynextyear–anadditional$2,187,044.
McClainsaid1.4percentof thehikewillbebecauseofan increaseintheConsumerPrice Index,whichhesaidissimilar toaspikeinstandardofliving. Theremaining0.4percentis fornewconstruction.
Thedistrictalsowillsubmitapropertytaxrequestto thecountytotaling4.9percent. McClainsaidthatnumberis calculatedtoaccountforhigherestimatesforconstruction costsorifadditionaldollars needtobeplacedinother funds.Hesaidthedistrictdoes notexpecttogetthosefunds, butthecountyonlycanallocateasmuchasthedistrict requests.
Apublichearingwillbe conductedattheboard’sNov. 11meeting.Themeasureis expectedtobeapprovedNov. 24andsentontothecountyin December.
