BENSENVILLE – The village of Bensenville has been selected by Commonwealth Edison for a pilot program that will install about 400 smart LED streetlights across the village.

The new streetlights are being installed at no cost to Bensenville or Lombard, another town chosen for the program.

“Over time it should save us money,” said Joe Caracci, director of public works for the village of Bensenville.

Caracci said staff will evaluate how much the town uses the software during the next six months and whether it has benefited the village.

“Long term, hopefully we can reduce the energy usage,” he said.

In addition to saving energy, the villages will be able to control the smart streetlights remotely. For instance, they can dim the lights and adjust the power to 80 percent or 50 percent. The municipalities also can control the daily scheduling of the lights.

Lombard and Bensenville were selected because they were towns that had expressed an interest in LED streetlights and they are located within the footprint of the system, Gabel said.

Carl Goldsmith, Lombard’s public works director, said the cost savings will be about $4,500 annually as a result of using the energy-efficient lights.

“It was certainly a no-brainer,” Goldsmith said.

Another positive aspect of the new technology is that residents should

receive quicker service if there is an outage because a job ticket will be created, allowing ComEd to track the outage faster, he said. Similar to smart meters, the streetlights tap into a wireless network that allows communication with grid operators, according to ComEd. “We’ll get immediate notifications when they are not working properly,” said Gabel, adding this would lead to a quicker response time.

The lights also could increase safety in town because the village could dim lights in an area in order to make it more difficult for a criminal to see while the police were wearing night vision goggles, Goldsmith said.

Gabel said lights may be turned on in an area for the purpose of crowd control. For example, after a large neighborhood concert, the lights can create a path for people. He said they also may be used to signal an ambulance to help paramedics arrive at the scene of an emergency faster.

The pilot program will last for six months, and at that point, the villages will decide if they want to continue with the smartlight software package. The LED lights would remain free of charge to the villages.

He staged a comeback in 1970, but Gardstrom said he quit racing for good in 1972 to start a family and because he was tired of the constant travel.

“He also lost a lot of friends in accidents, including his hero ‘Fireball Roberts’,” she said. “He said he regretted leaving it his whole life; he missed it. But he got his second dream, which was to have a family, and went on to a second career as a successful Realtor.”

Waddell Wilson, who worked with Lorenzen as an engine builder, said Lorenzen was more professional and focused than most drivers of the day, and that was a big part of his success.

“The knowledge he had and the ability he had to feel the car,” Wilson said.

“He was unusual in that he paid so much attention to the car. He worked on it, and drivers in those days didn’t work on their own cars.”

Lorenzen walked away from the sport in 1967, according to Gardstrom,

ELMHURST – As a 12-year-old playing in her family’s basement, Amanda Lorenzen Gardstrom knocked over and broke the Daytona 500 trophy that her father, Fred Lorenzen, had won decades earlier. Surprisingly, he wasn’t upset with her.

“He was incredibly humble,” said Gardstrom, 37, an Elmhurst resident.

“He never told us what big deals these trophies were, he never told us what he did, or what he accomplished, or what a legend he is in the sport [of NASCAR]. He didn’t like to brag.”

But the unassuming Elmhurst native has something to brag about. Lorenzen, 80, who was known as “Fearless Freddie,” was one of five men inducted Jan. 30 into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, N.C. “It’s an honor,” said Lorenzen, who lives in Oak Brook. “It’s as high as you can go, and it finished off my career.”

Lorenzen said winning that Daytona 500 trophy in 1965 was the “second-biggest” accomplishment of his successful NASCAR career, which officially began in 1961 when he started racing with the Ford-sponsored Holman-Moody team.

He said his biggest accomplishment was winning the Rebel 300 in Darlington, S.C., in 1961 by beating rival Curtis Turner, who was also one of his heroes.

“That’s a hard race to win,” Lorenzen said. “That’s one of the hardest tracks in the south. I barely beat Turner.”

Lorenzen had many other accolades during his career, including becoming

accomplishments weren’t always celebrated in local media, said Lance Tawzer, curator of the Elmhurst Historical Museum.

The museum had an exhibit dedicated to Lorenzen for several months in 2013, which contained photos, racing footage and other artifacts from his career. Tawzer said several fans from the South came to Elmhurst to see the exhibit.

“If Fred was a baseball player who made it to the Hall of Fame, there’d be a statue,” Tawzer said. “It’s our responsibility to make sure local people know who he is.”

Gardstrom said it was very emotional for her father to be at the Hall of Fame ceremony.

“The most important thing for him was to see his old friends and relive memories. It was such a priceless gift to see his eyes light up,” Gardstrom said. “He teared up when I told him [about getting voted in to the Hall]. It’s the last victory for him.”

Wilson said there were “people all over him, wanting to see him and take a picture with him” at the ceremony, proving he’s still a fan favorite.

“People didn’t forget about him, and it was an honor for me to be able to work with him. He taught me so much,” Wilson said.

Gardstrom still receives letters and calls from fans, and she said it’s very humbling to learn how many people were inspired by her father.

“I’m so proud and so lucky to have a dad who’s my hero,” she said. “But then to learn he’s so many other people’s hero is just so emotional.”

Park District opts to limit detention ponds

editorial@mysuburbanlife.com ELMHURST – The Elmhurst Park District board at a recent meeting denied a request from the city to allow use of both east and west sides of two parks for stormwater detention.

The city had asked the Park District to reconsider its position on the matter, which was outlined in a letter dated Oct. 29, 2014. According to the letter, the board unanimously approved allowing the construction of a stormwater detention basin with the capacity of 11 acre feet on the west side of York Commons Park located along York Street.

Additionally, the Park District board also agreed to allow the city to build a stormwater detention basin with a 15 acre feet capacity on the west side of Golden Meadows Park, located off Caroline Avenue.

As part of the agreement outlined in the letter, the city also would be required to build one basketball court and two sand volleyball courts at York Commons – both projects fall in line with the Park District’s master plan for the area.

Though the letter was described as a unanimous decision, the board was divided on whether to reconsider the city’s request to use the east portions of both parks for further flood relief, board president Carolyn Ubriaco said.

Ultimately, the board passed a motion in a 4-3 vote maintaining its original position.

According to city data, and further review by V3 Companies, the detention basin in York Commons would provide flooding relief to 38 homes on Crescent Avenue, while the basin in Golden Meadows is expected to protect 30 homes on Pine Street, Avon Road and East Court.

Both Ubriaco and Elmhurst Park District Executive Director Jim Rogers said the board’s decision hinged on maintaining park land for public use.

“Really what it boils down to is any

parts of the park used for stormwater basins are most likely in perpetuity going to be stormwater basins, which severely impacts the community’s ability to have those spaces available,” he said.

The east lobe of York Commons features a baseball diamond and small soccer field, while the east side of Golden Meadows includes a soccer field.

“As a landlocked community, all of our ball diamonds and fields are used extensively,” Rogers said.

Ubriaco said it makes much more sense for the city to pursue stormwater infrastructure improvements rather than use both the east and west sides of each park.

According to a presentation from V3 Companies to the Park District board, construction of a detention basin on the east side of York Commons would only protect 14 homes on Washington Street and Swain Avenue, whereas infrastructure improvements, including increasing the size of sewer pipes and pumping stations, would protect 222 homes.

But Elmhurst city manager Jim Grabowski said those infrastructure improvements would come with a

roughly $20 million price tag, versus only about $5 million to $6 million for the creation of detention basins on both sides of York Commons and Golden Meadows.

Referring to the use of both parks for stormwater detention, Grabowski said, “we owe it to the taxpayers to investigate those options first.”

Additionally, he said, infrastructure improvements would also require a slew of approvals from both state and federal agencies with an estimated wait time in the two- to three-year range.

For now, Grabowski said the city has created policies that require onsite stormwater retention for buildings that qualify and has also set aside funds to buy out low-lying properties in an effort to provide some flood relief for residents.

Given the recent decision by the board, Grabowski said the city will examine its priorities to make certain building the detention basins in York Commons and Golden Meadows are still worthwhile projects and, “assuming they are, I’m confident we can reach and agreement with the Park District.”

Rauner forms consolidation task force at Elmhurst event

Gov. Bruce Rauner signed Executive Order 15-15 to form the new Local Government Consolidation and Unfunded Mandate Task Force headed by Wheaton resident and Lt. Gov. Evelyn Pacino Sanguinetti during a news conference Feb. 13 at the DuPage Water Commission in Elmhurst.

Rauner called it an “exciting step towards turning our state around.”

“We need to encourage the streamlining of local governments and of school districts to reduce costs and be good stewards of taxpayer dollars,” he said. “The [task force] will get the conversation started on how to streamline [and] end duplicative services and improve efficiency.”

DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin, who said he will play a leadership role in the task force, spoke at the press conference, calling DuPage a laboratory for consolidation. The county projects more than $100 million in savings from its Accountability, Consolidation and Transparency Initiative, which Cronin started in 2010.

While Cronin said the county’s approach to consolidation isn’t one size fits all, he believes its principles could be transferred statewide.

“Imagine the savings if we could repeat that success story in 100 other counties throughout Illinois,” Cronin said.

ELMHURST – The fourth annual No Frills Fun Run will be March 1, benefiting an Elmhurst fourth-grader with a genetic disorder that causes progressive muscle degeneration.

Marshall Bell has Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and his family is saving money to buy a wheelchair ramp, vehicle lift and home modifications that will allow Marshall to manage better at home.

“One-hundred percent of the profit is given to the family,” said Dawn Wheatland, who started No Frills with Kristin Morrow as a way to give back to those in need throughout the community.

Run participants can pick to do either a half marathon [13.1 miles] or a quarter marathon [6.55 miles] at the event. Teams also may share either distance.

The event will kick off at 8 a.m. at York Street and head down the Prairie Path.

Registration will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Economic outlook is both good and bad I have both good and bad news to share: the United States of America boasts the best economy on earth. It’s true. The good and bad news are the same, have been the same for several years, and likely will stay the same for several years more.

Job growth is at its fastest pace since 1999 and has outCOMMUNITY paced the 8.7 million jobs lost VOICE from December 2007 through John R. February 2010. Since then, 11.2 Quigley million new jobs have been created, including 800,000 in manufacturing, fueled by the rebound in the automotive industry.

Auto-related sales generate up to 45 percent of the some $11 million annually in Elmhurst retail sales tax, and municipal finances in Naperville, Lisle, Westmont and Aurora are highly impacted.

At $2.1 trillion, American manufacturing, if ranked as a country, would be the world’s ninth largest economy. While manufacturing has recaptured its recession-based 20 percent production loss, it has done so by adding back less than one on three jobs lost.

America’s unemployment rate is under 6 percent and inching lower to the 5.2 percent historical norm, while Illinois lags behind at 6.4 percent, with the city of Chicago in the low sevens.

In 2014, the inflation rate was among the lowest in 50 years, interest rates remained low and the Consumer Price Index remained below norms at less than 2 percent – thanks in part to the Federal Reserve Bank keeping lending rates well below historical norms of 3.5 to 4 percent.

America’s federal deficit fell to “only” $483 billion off $3.5 trillion in 2014 spending, compared to the $5 trillion plus during the past five years. In 2015, the debt is projected near $18 trillion, equaling our Gross Domestic Product. Entitlement programs and defense spending still account for two-thirds of the federal budget.

GDP grew more than 4 percent in 2014, exceeding all forecasts and the historical average of 3 percent. An uptick in consumer spending and business investment were cited as factors, along with a decrease in imports.

Energy costs for homeowners and businesses have balanced out over the past 30 years. Despite the volatility in crude oil, prices for natural gas and electricity remain competitive. In 2014, the U.S. ranked No.1 in the production of crude oil (despite no Keystone Pipeline Project), natural gas and wind power.

Economic-influencing issues in 2015 will range from foreign trade to immigration, from tax codes to income inequality, from federal regulations to minimum wage and from health care to retirement.

This is the second winter in a row that when the lots between the Walgreens on Palmer Drive and Chase Bank were plowed, they, in some infinite wisdom, decided that the one parking spot that they would take out with the extraneous snow – and I do understand you have to put snow somewhere – is the handicap spot between those two businesses. I am thinking now, you’re putting people on snow and ice, having to walk a distance with a handicap. I’ve seen elderly people almost fall. Second winter in a row, there’s a million spots that they can use to put the snow, but they pick the one handicap spot in that whole area, and that’s just a grave concern to me.

Legislators respond to COD buyout of Breuder

By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com Illinois Senate Democrats announced the formation of a new subcommittee to investigate executive compensation at public institutions in a news release Feb. 11.

The announcement comes in the wake of the fallout following the approval of a massive severance package for Col- Robert lege of DuPage President Breuder Robert Breuder.

The subcommittee will be part of the Senate Higher Education Committee and will steer reform efforts and ensure tuition and tax dollars are used responsibly.

It will have three members: Bill Cunningham, D-Chicago; Dan Kotowski, D-Park Ridge; and a Republican who has yet to be selected, according to John Patterson, director of communications for the Illinois Senate Democrats.

The issue was thrust into the spotlight when the College of DuPage Board of Trustees voted 6-1 to approve a $762,000 buyout for Breuder, who will retire March 31, 2016 – three years earlier than anticipated. The college will also name its new Homeland Security Education Center after him.

The vote drew outrage from the public, as 400 people attended a board meeting in January about the severance package.

Board Chairwoman Erin Birt said at the meeting the board quantified 1.5 years of Breuder’s salary and benefits when coming to the agreement.

Several local representatives are looking at legislation regarding Breuder’s buyout and others want to prevent similar severance packages in the future.

Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton, filed two resolutions related to the buyout.

The first is a request for the Illinois Auditor General to perform an audit of the college’s state funding from the past three fiscal years. After Ives’ re-

quest, the college asked the auditor general to move forward with the audit prior to receiving legislative approval.

Ives also is sponsoring a resolution urging trustees to reconsider the buyout and the building naming. At the January meeting, several members of the public expressed an interest in naming the building after Staff Sgt. Robert J. Miller, a Wheaton native awarded the Medal of Honor after dying in combat in Afghanistan.

Rep. Peter Breen, R-Lombard, announced earlier this month he would introduce legislation known as the Breuder Rule, which would ban excessive severance packages at public institutions.

At a House Republicans news conference after the buyout was approved, Rep. Ron Sandack, R-Downers Grove, announced he would pursue legislation banning the use of state money in such severance packages.

At the news conference, legislators also announced other possible laws including cuts in state funding for the college and reductions in the length of board trustees’ terms, which are currently six years.

When reached for comment, college spokesman Joe Moore declined.

A Celebration of Jack's life will take place from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

Cremation rites have been accorded, and the U.S. Navy will conduct burial at sea with full honors.

It was Jack's wish to donate his brain to assist researchers in finding a cure for Lewy Body Dementia.

Jack also was an ongoing supporter of Paralyzed Veterans of America, 801 Eighteenth Street, N.W. Washington, D.C., 20006-3517.

Owen was born October 12, 1938 in Oak Park, Illinois, the son of Ambrose and Katherine (Uebel) Wrzeszcz. He is a 1956 graduate of the Oak Park High School, and a 1960 graduate of Northern Illinois University with a degree in Mathematics and Education. Later he would go on to receive his Master's Degree from the University of Illinois, sponsored by the National Science Foundation.

On January 28, 1961, Owen married Donna Jay in Elmhurst. They raised three children and have celebrated fifty-four years of marriage.

Owen taught mathematics for many years, first at Howard Jr. High School in Wilmette, then twentyfive years at Elmhurst York High School. In 1985, Owen and Rev. Donna moved to Schapville, Illinois where they served the Schapville Zion Presbyterian Church until 2002.

All throughout life, Owen found ways to serve, first by training more than forty Eagle Scouts over twenty-five years, including four Eagle Scouts in the Wrzeszcz

Myth: If you owe a lot of student loan debt, there is no way you can get a mortgage.

Reality: Don’t assume that having a lot of student loan debt automatically disqualifies you from getting a mortgage. The key factor is not necessarily the size of your loan obligation, but the amount of your total monthly debt payments compared to your monthly income. This is called DTI. imortgage, for example, has approved thousands of loans to first-time buyers whose monthly student loan payments were as high as $300, and many more could qualify by increasing their monthly income.

Myth: If your credit score is low, you should not even try to get a mortgage.

Reality: Millions of potential buyers assume they will not be approved for a mortgage even though many could qualify, according to a national survey commissioned by loanDepot LLC. Today, median FICO scores for mortgages to buy a home are 683 for FHA loans and 754 for conventional loans. But hundreds of thousands of buyers with scores lower than those are getting mortgages if they have good income and low levels of debt.

Myth: Buying a home isn’t a good investment.

Reality: Real estate, like other assets, rises and falls based on supply and demand. Over the past two years, home values in most markets have been rising. While all real estate is local, if you

bought a home in March 2012, by August 2014 the national median home price as measured by Case-Shiller had risen 29.6 percent.

Myth: The mortgage-interest tax deduction is going away.

Reality: Though the deduction has its critics, most observers believe it is unlikely that Congress will eliminate the mortgage interest deduction any time soon. Many states also allow homeowners to write off the interest they pay on their mortgages from their state income taxes. Check with your accountant or CPA on if you can qualify for this type of tax deduction.

Myth: I’m about to get married and the wedding is so expensive I won’t be able to buy a home.

Reality: According to TheKnot, the average wedding has 138 guests who typically give a gift valued at $100 each. That’s $13,800 in spatulas, baking pans and other things. If every guest contributed to a Down Payment Fund, you could have enough saved for a down payment on a $276,000 home in San Diego.

“These are just a few of the myths about home buying that surface frequently in our conversations with first-time buyers,” says Thompson. “I always advise potential buyers, especially first- time buyers, to get in touch with one of our local imortgage loan officers if they’re interested in straight answers to specific questions about financing a home. (BPT) - When buying a first home, most people are making one of the biggest purchases of their lives. Without home buying experience, it’s hard to separate fact from fiction.

“Buying a first home can be exciting and stressful for most young buyers, especially the financing process,” says Clete Thompson, vice president at imortgage, a division of loanDepot LLC. “There’s a lot of paperwork, many choices, and sometimes budgets don’t stretch very far. Our licensed loan officers specialize in helping first-time buyers navigate the home finance process, which can be stressful if you’re not working with a seasoned professional.”

To help first-time buyers, the experts at imortgage are uncovering prevalent myths about financing a home purchase: Myth: It takes a 20 percent down payment to buy a home.

Reality: Required down payment amounts vary by type of loan and they are on average much smaller than people think. Last year, the median down payment for all first-time buyers was 6 percent, according to the National Association of Realtors. One reason is that many first-time buyers use FHA loans, which require down payments as low as 3 to 3.5 percent. VA loans require nothing down for qualified veterans or active military personnel. If you want to take out a conventional loan, many lenders do require 20 percent down, but you can lower that percentage with private mortgage insurance. There are also hundreds of down payment assistance programs that eliminate or reduce down payment

York’s leading scorer showed off his long-range ability during a Feb. 12 conference game against Downers Grove North, sinking six 3-pointers and scoring a game-high 24 points as the Dukes cruised to a 63-49 victory.

“I felt really good early,” Thomas said. “I came out looking to shoot, knocked down a couple threes in the first quarter and just got in a zone. My teammates did a great job of working the offense and getting me the ball when I was open.”

Thomas was perfect from the field in the first quarter, going 5-for-5 from behind the arc and powering the Dukes 17-11 lead after eight minutes.

He then knocked down his first shot of the second quarter, a 3-pointer, and finished with 20 first-half points as the Dukes led 30-17 going into the locker room.

“Jayvon has really shot the ball well all year for us,” York head coach Vince Doran said.

“He’s capable of doing that any night, it’s not a fluke. He constantly sees a lot of attention, but is scoring more than 20 points per game in spite of that.

“Tonight was a special performance by Jayvon. It seemed like he didn’t hit the rim in the first half. It was really fun to watch.”

DGN made a run in the third quarter to pull within four points, but a Joe Pierotti bucket followed by a John Morrissey 3-pointer jumpstarted a 12-1 Dukes run to end the quarter. Another Thomas three to open the fourth increased York’s lead to 50-32, putting the game out of reach.

CAROL STREAM – Neither Mike Ordonez nor Tommy Helton were entirely surprised to qualify for state wrestling, but both were thrilled to do so.

Both York wrestlers placed second at the Glenbard North sectional, Ordonez at 138 pounds and Alexander at 285.

Ordonez and Helton both took third in the Leyden regional a week before, but improved at the sectional.

“It was the greatest feeling in the world, coming from last year and not making it through regionals,” Ordonez said. “It’s the greatest feeling in the world knowing that all the hard work pays off.”

“After that semifinals match it felt like I was a 106-pounder,” Helton said of winning the match that clinched a state berth. “All my weight was just lifted off my shoulders. It was just awesome.”

Ordonez wanted to bounce back after what he felt was a disappointing regional showing, which included a semifinal loss to Leyden’s Jeremiah Recinos. At the sectional, Ordonez won his first two matches to earn a semifinal against Lane Tech’s Jake Davis, who entered with a 31-4 record and beat Recinos in the quarterfinals. Ordonez won 9-5.

Helton had confidence just from getting out of a tough regional the week before. He pinned Notre Dame’s Frank Pavlik in the quarterfinals and won in overtime against Glenbard West’s Darien Kaufmann in the semifinals.

“Getting out of regionals was going to be the tough part that we knew,” Helton said. “After getting out of regionals I kind of expected to get this far.”

Both wrestlers said their goal at state is to make the medal stand. The top six of 16 wrestlers earn all-state medals.

“That’s always been my goal to get down there and get on the medal stand,” Helton said. “Hopefully a state championship match.

At my weight class anybody can take it.”

GLEN ELLYN – Free-throw shooting has not been the forte for Glenbard South’s boys basketball team this season.

The Raiders, however, picked a good time to get hot from the charity stripe, sinking their first 15 attempts and 24-of-29 overall while knocking off IC Catholic 66-57 Tuesday night in Glen Ellyn.

“They shot great at the line,” IC coach T.J. Tyrell said. “At halftime I think they were 14-of-14 and we did a poor job of boxing out.

“They had second- and third-shot opportunities that they took advantage of as well as getting us to [commit] turnovers. We didn’t have a lot of energy, which was a little disappointing because we had been playing so well.”

IC (13-12 overall, 3-8 Metro Suburban West) led 29-21 with 5:17 left in the second quarter when Glenbard South coach Wade Hardtke called a timeout and told his players to relax and let the game come to them.

The Raiders responded with an 11-0 run to take the lead. The Knights tied it at 32-32 but Povilas Riauba sank a 3-pointer to give the Raiders the lead for good with 1:15 left in the half.
