PIE Foundation supports local learning

By AIMEE BARROWS editorial@mysuburbanlife.com More than 60 girls from DuPage County School District 45 were able to join Girls on the Run, a national physical activity-based after-school program for girls in third through eighth grades, thanks to a grant from the Partnership for Inspired Education Foundation last spring.

And in DuPage High School District 88, several students were able to improve their literacy skills after teachers at Willowbrook High School in Villa Park were awarded a grant from PIE to purchase iPods so students could listen to audio books while reading.

PIE is a joint education foundation comprised of four school districts: Addison Elementary School District 4, District 45, Salt Creek School District 48 and District 88. The foundation raises funds to support programs and learning opportunities that are not part of the districts’ operating budgets, said Jean Hockensmith, PIE board secretary and District 45 community relations coordinator.

The PIE Foundation is hosting its annual fundraiser Sunday at Drury Lane Theatre in Oakbrook Terrace.

Guests will see the musical “West Side Story,” followed by a dinner and silent auction.

“It’s a lot of fun. Everyone comes together for a worthwhile cause because we know we’re helping the kids,” Hockensmith said.

She said the four districts equally split the funds raised, which usually total $13,000 to $15,000.

Hockensmith called PIE “unique” because there aren’t many joint foundations between districts.

In 2014, Hockensmith said PIE was able to help District 45 not only pay the registration fee for 65 girls to join Girls on the Run but also helped to fund Drumming for Penguins, an after-school program that gives elementary students an “outlet for self-esteem” while participating in a drumline.

Teachers can apply for minigrants from the foundation, Hockensmith said. Board members decide on which programs to fund, and the grants are usually between $200 and $1,000.

“We’re looking for grants that touch as many kids as possible because we want to offer as many opportunities to as many students as possible, whether that be a capital expense like the drums or paying the fee for Girls on the Run,” she said.

PIE Foundation President and District 88 Board of Education President Donna Craft Cain said a science teacher at Addison Trail High School was awarded a grant last year to make a rain garden for the school’s horticulture program. She said PIE also helps to pay for testing fees for students to take Advance Placement exams.

“We covered those costs because several students couldn’t afford it,” she said. “We want to encourage kids to take these tests, and we want as many

students as possible to get the college credit.”

PIE also has helped to fund college visits for freshman students in District 88 by paying transportation costs.

“Willowbrook has a partnership with Illinois State University and Addison Trail has one with the University of Wisconsin-Madison,” Craft Cain said. “The idea is to get freshmen interested in college and to see what their end goal is. A lot of our students are the first in their family to go to college.”

District 48 has used PIE funds for teacher minigrants. Superintendent John Correll said they’ve given many grants for summer reading programs, as well as for physical education programs.

“We’ve also worked with our parent organization to support their activities like their science night, and we’ve also provided music therapy to our autistic students,” he said.

District 4 Superintendent John Langton said the PIE Foundation helps support innovative programs in all eight of the district’s schools.

“The projects have ranged from literacy activities like books and specialized reading programs to fine arts and physical education,” he said. “Our physical education teachers at the middle school used grant money to buy exercise equipment. Other teachers have used the money to buy iPads or Kindles, anything that enhances learning.”

Another important aspect of PIE is the sense of community it fosters among the four districts, Langton said.

“It creates connections between the feeder schools and the high schools,” he said. “We want to make sure all the children have similar learning opportunities regardless of which elementary district they attended.”

Parade kicks off St. Paddy’s Day ELMHURST – The 19th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade drew a large crowd Saturday in Elmhurst.

The parade featured performances from marchers, including Irish dancers, The Shannon Rovers Irish Pipe Band, Chicago Highlanders Pipes & Drums, groups from York Community High School and of course, the Elmhurst Armpit Orchestra.

Alan Monroe, interim executive director of ShelterBox USA, which is located nationally near Sarasota, Fla., said the organization has responded to more than 250 disasters in about 99 countries. He said they deploy teams

of two to four volunteers for each disaster for about two to four weeks at a time. Monroe estimated that teams are sent to a new country “about every two weeks” and said they usually help with 26 disasters a year.

focus on shelter,” Monroe said. “We’ve heard so often that it’s not just a green box with a tent, but a symbol of hope.

The people are so appreciative because for so many it’s the difference between life and death.”

Dyer was in Malaysia for about three weeks, from mid-January to early February. He said about 200,000 people were displaced by the record flooding in northern Malaysia, and his team helped provide shelter to about 1,100 families. He said every day they would distribute aid from the truckloads of boxes and tents. He said he and his team worked directly with the victims and taught them how to set up the tents.

“We empower the locals,” Dyer said.

“It gives them a sense of ownership because we’re showing them how to do it, and not doing everything for them. But we do get everything through customs, ensure the equipment goes to the right people and that it’s literally delivered right to the families who’ve lost everything.”

This was Dyer’s first trip to Malaysia, but his 12th deployment with ShelterBox. He’s been working with the organization for eight years, and went to Japan after the tsunami in

ELMHURST – One of the most poignant memories Elmhurst resident Mark Dyer has from his recent trip to Malaysia to help flood victims is seeing a group of displaced residents, who had been living on a side of a road, holding up a painted sign that read “thank you my brothers for helping us” as he and his team approached.

Dyer was deployed to the Asian country by the nonprofit organization ShelterBox USA, which he described as “the largest provider of emergency tent shelters in the world,” to help the victims of record flooding in Malaysia.

“There were about 25 families who lived in a remote village, and they lost everything,” Dyer said. “But once we got there, they held up that sign, and it was very touching and very personal. They understood that people from all over the world were helping them when they felt like they’d been forgotten.”

Teen takes March Madness expertise to smartphones

ELMHURST – To say Zorian Schiffman has the mind and spirit of a true entrepreneur is an understatement.

At 14 years old, Zorian has developed a smartphone app, BracketHelp, that is available on Google Play and Apple iTunes and provides a comprehensive guide to March Madness, the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

Zorian has been near the top of the ESPN’s March Madness contest for the past four years. He first started selling paper copies of the guide to his friends, and then created a website last year.

Now, Zorian is thrilled that the guide he has put much research into is available as an app.

After making $220 by selling the paper version of his guide to kids, he thought, “Why couldn’t I market it to the United States and make a lot more money?”

“It is such a unique app and it is time sensitive,” Zorian said, with the tournament starting March 19.

He still owns the domain for his website, but it is not active since he is focusing on the app.

He said he has always loved March Madness because 68 teams get to compete for one national championship.

“They are all given an equal chance,” Zorian said. “It’s an intriguing idea.”

Zorian’s app includes a statistical analysis of the teams and players and his personal commentary, he said. He has been busy making updates as the games are happening.

“My app can cater to any type of competition,” Zorian said.

He explained his app can be useful for people in office competitions, competitions between family members and friends, and much larger competitions.

“I’m excited for him,” said Oryna Schiffman, Zorian’s mom.

ELMHURST – The fifth annual Bags for Wags Tournament raised $3,500 to provide three high school seniors with a one-time college scholarship, according to an event news release.

The event and scholarship honor Brian Edwin Wagner, who died in an automobile accident when he was 17.

The scholarships are awarded to students who display integrity, perseverance and leadership, like Wagner did, the release stated.

Finalists for the scholarships will be interviewed in April. Recipients will be announced on or before May 15.

Criteria included: • Graduated eighth grade from Elmhurst school or currently enrolled as a senior at Elmhurst high school • Participated in minimum of three extracurricular activites during high school • Fulfilled 25 hours of volunteer service with an organization that supports a cause the applicant would like to commit and contribute to.

Get the facts before eliminating townships At the annual meeting of the Town of York next month, the township will celebrate 165 years since the Constitution for the new Town of York was passed in the spring of 1850, and York Township of DuPage County was formed.

Today, Township government still provides essential COMMUNITY services and does so more cost VOICE effectively than larger units of John W. government.

Valle Recently there has been an aggressive push to eliminate township government in Illinois, often based on information that is simply not true. If townships were to be eliminated, replacement services within larger government bodies would end up costing taxpayers more, not less.

More than ever, township government is a vital community link in the local government system. Township government provides important quality-of-life services. Our townships often provide service at little or no cost to taxpayers. Because townships in Illinois are local in nature, they are able to identify community needs and respond to them with programs and services.

Townships in Illinois are better able to respond to local needs than larger forms of government because our proximity to our constituents keeps us in touch. Townships provide services without government bureaucracy. In addition to providing the three mandated functions of general assistance, property assessment and road and bridge maintenance, townships also may provide many other functions. These include programs for senior citizens, young people, the disabled and low income families. All these programs are designed to fit the needs of specific communities.

Township government success results from various factors: • Local elected officials in smaller governments are able to take a more direct role in administering government finances and services.

• Individual citizens have more influence in smaller governments.

• Special interest groups have less influence because individual citizens have more influence.

It can be virtually impossible for discontented citizens to restore smaller units of government. On the other hand, cooperative agreements allow governments to work together to periodically evaluate such arrangements to ensure they continue to be in the public interest.

Township government is indeed important; Illinois cannot afford to have critical services eliminated or delivered at a higher cost. Before any voters consider elimination of township government, let’s first understand the facts about what would be lost.

Drumbeat of bad news vindicates COD faculty When a union can’t see eye to eye with the leadership of the organization that employs its members, there could be any number of factors at play. Sometimes unions have unrealistic expectations. Sometimes there’s just a clash of personalities.

Sometimes a leader making needed changes ruffles some feathers along the way.

The College of DuPage Faculty Association’s beef with school President Robert Breuder and the Board of Trustees may include some of those elements. But on balance, the faculty members have largely been vindicated. The faculty registered a vote of no confidence in Breuder in September; in the months since then, pretty much everyone else has joined them in that opinion.

The recitation of the failures in leadership at the College of DuPage has become routine yet still shocking. A leaked email suggesting playing games with state money. Fraud at WDCB, the college radio station.

Battles over whether imprest payments require auditing. Breuder’s free meals at the money-losing Waterleaf restaurant on campus.

And to top it all off, the generous $762,000 in severance that Breuder will get when he vacates his post in disgrace in 2016.

Compared to all that, the faculty’s concerns lodged in September can sound almost petty at first: “We don’t feel inspired by [Breuder] as a leader,” said Glenn Hansen, president of the faculty association.

There are a lot of people in a lot of jobs feeling less than inspired by their bosses. It’s a common refrain.

But in this case, we know now there was actual bad management behind the complaint. Given what we’ve learned, who could blame Hansen and the faculty members for not feeling inspired?

Breuder’s response to the faculty’s vote only cements that they knew what they were talking about.

“Factual accuracy has never been important to the Senate leadership,” he wrote in a response made public recently. “It does not support their irresponsible and unfounded accusations.”

Strong words, given Breuder’s email that exposed him as someone who finds no issue with bending the truth when it suits him.

Next month, voters will get to pick three members for the College of DuPage Board of Trustees. There are a lot of candidates running.

Residents would be wise to keep in mind the recent leadership dysfunction when making their selections.

Rauner’s budget causes concern as child poverty levels rise

By NATHAN LURZ Area nonprofits are closely watching the governor’s office and state legislature as they could face big cuts in state funding despite DuPage County’s ongoing child poverty levels.

Leaders and members of more than a dozen nonprofits came together March 5 as the Voices for Illinois Children organization unveiled its Illinois Kids Count 2015 report, detailing the extent of the state’s and county’s child poverty.

Although there were harrowing numbers included – most notably a 10.5 percent child poverty rate in 2012 – most of the conversations revolved around state funding potentially drying up.

“Illinois is at the crossroads of the future – it’s a future that’s at risk and we need to consider what kind of state we’ll be,” said Carol Simler, executive director of homelessness nonprofit DuPage Pads. “We need to ask ourselves and our political leaders – will our social and economic policies help all children succeed and not let those children that live in poverty fall through because of inaction?”

Simler said she did not blame Gov. Bruce Rauner for the current state of Illinois’s finances, calling it “his inheritance,” but said the drastic cuts in his recent budget proposal put the future at risk for the more than 600,000 children across Illinois who are living in poverty.

According to the report, the number of children living in poverty in DuPage County increased 137 percent from 1999 to 2012 compared to 39 percent statewide. Family incomes also dropped by 15 percent in DuPage between 1999 and 2012.

Larry Joseph, the director of research at Voices for Illinois Children, said while the economy recently has recovered slightly, he didn’t anticipate a significant change in those numbers in this year’s numbers, estimating only a 1 percent drop in the child poverty rate.

Melissa Travis, senior director of programs at the People’s Resource Center, said one-third of the more than 32,000 clients that come through the nonprofit in 2014 were younger than 18 years old. That number has more than doubled in the past seven years for the 40-year-old organization.

Dr. Ed Pont, a pediatrician at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital and chair of the government affairs committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics Illinois Chapter, said the program has made a world of difference to many of his patients.

There are some legislative districts where close to one in every two children receive Medicaid assistance.

“There is no such thing as an undeserving 4-year-old,” he said.

CONTAGIOUS CHILDHOOD SKIN INFECTION The highly contagious skin infection known as “impetigo”, which primarily affects infants and children, is caused by streptococcal or staphylococcal bacteria, or both. The infection produces symptoms of red sores, often on the face, especially around a child’s nose and mouth. The condition starts as tiny, barely perceptible blisters on the skin, usually at the site of a skin abrasion, scratch, or insect bite. The sores then burst and develop honey-colored crusts. Because impetigo spreads through contact and may spread quickly to other children, it should be treated immediately. Impetigo may clear on its own in two to three weeks, but antibiotics can shorten the course of the disease and help prevent the spread to others.

Patrons often run into Hall of Famer Frank Thomas at his Big Hurt Brewhouse in Berwyn.

Barbecued pulled pork provides a decadent touch to an order of BHB mac and cheese.

Bacon and avocado add big flavor to the salmon BLT sandwich, accom- crispiness. Meanwhile, the pork was very tender. We both panied by sweet potato fries.

To start, my friend ordered the house BHB Honey Girl beer, which is an American Hefeweizen that was tasty and, importantly for a wheat beer, not too sweet. There are several BHB beers, and a fairly wide selection of other craft and domestic brews available

on tap.

For the appetizer, we chose the BHB smothered fries, which feature crispy fries, pulled pork, giardiniera and Monterey Jack cheese. I’m typically quite picky with fries, but these had a coating that captured the desired

Next up, I went with the BHB BBQ pulled pork mac and cheese. Not only is the name a mouthful, but it’s a big portion. Normally, I’m a purist when it comes to mac

and cheese, but the bacon and pulled pork were surprisingly good additions.

First off, the mac and cheese had the proper creaminess, gooeyness and mix of colors to show that there are multiple cheeses at work. Throw in the crispy, crunchy bacon and that would have made for a great meal on its own. The pork was good, again, but the sweet barbecue sauce didn’t quite sync with the savory cheese for my personal taste.

So, I ended up basically eating bacon mac and cheese with a side of pulled pork, and enjoyed both that way.

My friend ordered a salmon BLT sandwich with sweet potato fries and also had positive things to report. The bacon and avocado flavorfully complemented the mild fish to make for another winner.

The menu has a wide variety from barbecue to pasta dishes, seafood, salads, sandwiches and pizza flatbreads, more than deserving of another run around the pub’s culinary bases.

The Mystery Diner is a newsroom employee at Suburban Life Media. The diner’s identity is not revealed to the restaurant staff before or during the meal. Only positive dining experiences will result in published reviews.

BERWYN – Heading to a restaurant named after one of my childhood heroes was an exciting prospect, and the food at Big Hurt Brewhouse did not disappoint.

Athletes breaking into the restaurant business is nothing new. In many cases, their involvement varies, determining how large a role they play in the success of the enterprise. A big name on the front of the building is nice, but that alone won’t keep a restaurant afloat.

I am pleased to report Frank Thomas was in the building – and left this White Sox fan a bit stunned at the sight of the Hall of Famer. He runs an attractive restaurant/ sports bar that provided my companion and me with good food and drink. A scattering of Frank Thomas memorabilia brings back some cherished memories, capped by an impressive replica of the statue of the slugger displayed at the ballpark.

The pub is on the southwest corner of Cermak Road and Oak Park Avenue in Berwyn, which means tons of eyeballs get to see the bright white lights that say Big Hurt Brewhouse on a daily basis.

Upon entering, my immediate reaction was: “Ooo, this is kind of fancy.” My casual tastes can just as easily be satisfied in a dive bar or a diner, but it does feel good to walk into a place that puts some effort into the ambience.

The pub is housed in a historic bank building, and still sports a vault, as well as the elaborately embellished dome that draws the eye upward like a baseball headed to the stratosphere. It’s definitely fancy enough for a date night but remains a casual sports bar perfect to watch a game with some friends over drinks.

There are enough TVs that you will never have a bad view if you want to catch a game. And the staff the night I visited was on the ball enough to pipe in the audio right at the Blackhawks game’s first faceoff.

Facing the No. 6-seed West Aurora in a sectional semifinal game at East Aurora and with a spot in sectional championship on the line, the Dukes went 6-for-20 from the floor in the first half and trailed 21-15 heading into the locker room.

Both offenses gained traction in the second half, but West Aurora’s athleticism and play-making ability proved to be too much for York (18-13), which fell 66-48.

“Like we’ve done all year, I thought our defense did a really good job of containing them in the first half,” York head coach Vince Doran said. “The game got away from us a bit in the third quarter. It’s tough to come back after spotting a team with so much size and skill a double-digit lead.

“But I give our guys a lot of credit, they didn’t back down.

They responded and got us back within striking distance in the final quarter. That says a lot about the character of this team.”

West Aurora (21-8) hit five 3-pointers in the third quarter and outscored the Dukes 23-15 in the frame, turning its halftime lead into a 44-30 advantage.

After being held to seven points on 3-of-14 shooting from the field in the first half, Jayvon Thomas, York’s leading scorer, regained his touch in the second half and went 8-for-13 during the final two quarters.

York girls excel with Bianchi at the point

By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – Point guard can be a difficult position to learn. The complicated nature of the nuanced position takes time to master.

In her four years on York’s varsity, Jessica Bianchi gradually became a student of the game and a coach on the floor for the Dukes. Her knack of breaking presses by sheer speed and dribbling ability, her quick defensive instincts and her knowledge of the game and the opponents tendencies made her a perfect fit for the position.

Bianchi’s all-around strong season, which included team-highs in scoring [11.7 points per game], assists [3.3 per game] and steals [2.3 per game], is why she is the all-area MVP. “I think in terms of what she meant the most for our program is that she made every player better,” coach John Constable said. “She made other players’ opportunities much easier. We’re going to miss that aspect. She was also a one-man press breaker. We averaged less than 10 turnovers a game for the season. That to me is almost unheard of.”

Bianchi, who is currently prepping for girls soccer season this spring after starting on the varsity team last year, was capable of scoring big points or being the playmaker to create plays for her teammates. Regardless of what was asked of her on a given night, Bianchi liked the pressure of running the offense.

“I like the responsibility that I have to put people in their place and to put myself in my place,” Bianchi said. “I like taking that role.”

As a four-year varsity player, Bianchi obviously developed her game while in high school. It wasn’t just the physical aspect of the game or her skills that improved. She also learned

“I think she became one of the smartest players I’ve ever coached,” Constable said. “We could walk through in our scouting report of other teams’ schemes and she was able to pick up on those things very easily this year. She knew what other teams were going to do at times and she would jump on passes and make steals just based on her having such a high basketball IQ. “In that regard she really became a student of the game. As a point guard you appreciate it because she became a

coach on the floor. That’s where I saw her evolve.”

This trait was essential at point guard and it helped York win 21 games this season. The 21 wins were the most for the Dukes since the 2002-03 season.

Bianchi is mulling offers from colleges, including North Central College in Naperville.

“She’s obviously going to be greatly missed,” Constable said. “I hope she goes on to have a very good collegiate career. I wish her the best of luck and I think she’ll be a very good Division III basketball player.”

ELMHURST – Upsetting Westinghouse in a regional semifinal was one thing, but trying to make it two in a row against North Lawndale was a much tougher task for Timothy Christian’s boys basketball team.

The Trojans were unable to pull off a second straight upset, losing to the Phoenix 65-35 in a Class 3A regional final at Timothy on March 6.

Timothy, the No. 11 seed in the Westinghouse sectional, finished the season with a 15-12 record. North Lawndale, the No. 3 seed, won its first regional since 2009.

TC finished a season that included a shared Metro Suburban East title, which was the program’s first conference title since the 2008-09 season.

“It’s been fun to coach guys who are team-oriented,” coach Jack LeGrand said. “We just really grinded it out together. Our team has been like that all year. Someone has just stepped up.”

Seniors Robert McGivney, Riley Chapman and Joe Bishop were starters for the Trojans this season, but younger players like juniors Ben Lodewyk, Josh Caver and Mitch Evenhouse and sophomore Joey Davidson were regulars in the rotation.

“Rob has been our main guy throughout the year and Riley has really been shooting well,” LeGrand said. “Every guy contributed a different night.”
