ADDISON – Addison was the site of a youth wheelchair basketball tournament Saturday, hosted by Synergy Adaptive Athletics, an agency dedicated to adaptive sports in DuPage County and the surrounding area.

Synergy recently was formed by the Northeast DuPage Special Recreation Association and Western DuPage Special Recreation Association. Its mission is to allow people with physical disabilities and visual impairments the opportunity to live life to its fullest.

The tournament ran from 1 to 8 p.m. at the recreation association, 1770 W. Centennial Place. In addition to Addison, the recreation association also serves other towns such as Lombard and Villa Park.

Eight teams from the north shore, western suburbs and Chicago competed in the tournament in preparation for the national wheelchair basketball tournament in April in Kentucky.

Synergy manages two junior-level teams. The preparatory team, for ages 12 and younger, plays on an 8½-foot

Nearly all of the rules are identical to NCAA regulations, with a few ex-

ceptions. The most significant rule is that players must dribble the ball after touching their chairs’ wheels twice.

Chairs are expected to make contact; however, no recklessness or holding wheelchairs is permitted.

ELMHURST – The Elmhurst Historical Museum hosted a grand opening for its new exhibit, “By All Accounts: The Story of Elmhurst,” on Saturday and Sunday.

The exhibit was created by museum staff, led by Curator of Exhibits Lance Tawzer, with the goal of creating a state-of-the-art attraction that shares the story of Elmhurst with a new generation.

It has been years in the making.

Funding for the exhibit came from a grassroots capital campaign spearheaded by the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation, a nonprofit that supports the Elmhurst Historical Museum and Churchville Schoolhouse, and chaired by local businessman Willis Johnson and Heritage Foundation board member Val Stewart.

The exhibit is open from 1 to 5 p.m.

York High School celebrates the arts

By MARY BETH VERSACI mversaci@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – Music, dance, art and comedy filled the halls of York Community High School this week as students and staff celebrated their annual Fine Arts Week.

For more than 30 years, the week has marked a time to acknowledge the artistic talents of York’s many students and give them an opportunity to interact with professional performers as well.

This year’s Fine Arts Week was cut short by a day because of standardized testing Tuesday. But on the other four days, performances filled nearly every class period.

“I like to think that every single student either gets to perform in some group or get to be in the audience for one of the events,” faculty coordinator Chris Gemkow said. “I don’t know if there’s any other event or anything else in the school where every student is in some way connected to the idea of the week.”

Teachers are given the choice to bring their classes to the performances. Since space is limited in the many

areas around the school where the events take place, teachers must sign up to reserve a spot for their students.

The group began meeting in September.

Gemkow said they try to make the week as diverse as possible while also

staying within their budget.

“Don’t think anything is impossible because we can at least try,” he said.

The week is supported through fundraisers, as well as funds from the school’s Student Council and Performing Arts Department. Advertisements also are sold for the program for the week’s student talent show.

Together, those sources provide about $3,500 to $3,800 for outside performers, professional technological support and other technology needs, Gemkow said.

Fine Arts Week’s featured artist this year was Lily and Madeleine, a teenage American folk pop duo from Indiana.

The musicians performed Thursday for students and also hosted a special, invite-only session where they listened to students perform their own original songs.

Another professional group that performed this year was Modern Vices, a rock band comprised of all York graduates.

Students involved with Fine Arts Week said it’s a way to highlight the work of artistically inclined students, which might otherwise go unnoticed.

“We have an amazing arts program at this school,” said senior Tess Lynam of Elmhurst, a member of the planning committee.

For some, Fine Arts Week is something they look forward to every year.

“This is my favorite week of the year,” said Elmhurst senior Katie Iacobellis, who photographs performances during the week.

Faculty association: ‘Bad relationship’ with Breuder led to no confidence vote

By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com The College of DuPage Faculty Association has released details about its September vote on no confidence in college President Robert Breuder.

The 14-page resolution, which was released the week of the Feb. 19 Board of Trustees meeting, details why the faculty voted 189-53 in favor Robert of the first vote of no con- Breuder fidence in the history of the College of DuPage.

The resolution includes claims of wasteful spending, lack of internal trust and intimidation, among various other claims. At the end of the resolution, the faculty requested Breuder resign.

Glenn Hansen, president of the college’s Faculty Association, said the resolution is the result of a “bad relationship that we have with Dr. Breuder due to many reasons.”

Hansen said Breuder has an adversarial management style that has resulted in a poor mental state for the faculty, resulting in a stressful working environment.

“We don’t feel inspired by him as a leader,” Hansen said.

The resolution was crafted by the faculty association in August, and the entire faculty voted on the measure in September. Hansen said the resolution has not changed since the faculty voted on it, with the exception of grammar and punctuation fixes.

The resolution contains no mention of the controversy that has been unearthed during the past few months, including the fraud uncovered at WDCB, the college radio station, and accusations of questionable spending by Breuder at the Waterleaf Restaurant and a lack of transparency over public information.

Hansen said the faculty likely won’t have another vote based on everything that has happened since September, but said the recent events would only further bolster the faculty vote.

“It would be an even more overwhelming vote of no confidence,” Hansen said.

Since the resolution was released, Hansen has received no response from any trustees about its contents.

The Faculty Association had arranged a meeting with a few trustees to discuss the resolution, but that meeting got canceled and was never rescheduled.

“The faculty are very disappointed with the way the Board of Trustees has handled this,” Hansen said.

Breuder addressed the no confidence vote in a Feb. 23 issue of the

college’s internal newsletter, which linked to a 34-page response. He dismissed all the claims made by the Faculty Association, arguing they had an ax to grind with previous boards.

“When I was hired, the faculty union was not happy with the presidential search,” Breuder wrote in his response. “An antagonistic relationship existed between [faculty] union leadership and the [former board Chairman Michael] McKinnon Board of Trustees. The national search culminated in my appointment, much to the chagrin of the union who saw the search process as flawed.”

Though Breuder’s lengthy response was released in February, it is dated Oct. 14, 2014. Breuder does not indicate when he read the Faculty Association’s resolution.

“When I first learned of the outcome of the vote, I was interested in the underlying reasons and learned that a long list of items formed the basis for the negative vote,” Breuder wrote. “As I reviewed the list carefully and thought about each item, it became evident I was reading a solicited listing of anything, everything that disturbed someone at some time since my arrival.”

After discrediting the faculty’s resolution, Breuder continued by saying this was a personal attack that would surely continue.

“Factual accuracy has never been important to the Senate leadership. It does not support their irresponsible and unfounded accusations,” he wrote.

“This additional list is nothing more than piling on. Continue to throw everything possible even if it has no merit. Continue to discredit the administration at all cost. The ‘bury the enemy’ mentality will not have the effect the Senate leadership hopes.”

Prior to the Feb. 19 Board of Trustees meeting, Trustee Kim Savage said she wanted Breuder to leave due to “ongoing tensions” between Breuder and the faculty since the last rounds of contract negotiations, which occurred in 2011.

The Board of Trustees began talking with Breuder about leaving the college in April 2014, Savage said. The vote of no confidence confirmed her belief that Breuder should leave the college.

Savage said the buyout Breuder received was a “mutually agreeable” decision for the board and a “responsible solution.” The $762,000 severance payment covers 1½ years of Breuder’s salary and benefits, as opposed to the three years the board would be forced to pay if Breuder remained at the school.

Hansen said he’s not interested in getting into a “war of words” with Breuder. Both he and Savage said they want to move forward to do what’s best for the college and students.

On Feb. 26, state Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, filed House Bill 3099 that would extend the terms of all current board members until 2018, after which their responsibilities would be transferred to the DuPage County Board.

of Illinois that is paid independently in that way.”

The DuPage County Board had long had control over the forest preserve, but the county created the separate elected board in 2002 and cut down the number of County Board members from 24 to 18, according to the forest preserve’s website.

Conroy said eliminating the board of six commissioners and president could save taxpayers more than $500,000 annually by eliminating the board’s salary and insurance costs – which she claims cost up to $77,209.50 per commissioner each year.

“With the situation that we are in now financially, every taxpayer dollar is important,” she said.

In 2013, Conroy introduced a similar bill that would have let voters decide whether to have the board continue without receiving compensation. Another bill from former Rep. Dennis Reboletti from the same year would have done the same while dissolving the board in 2016.

Under the new bill, the County Board chairman would appoint a fulltime liaison to advise the board on forest preserve issues. DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin said while he supported the mission of the forest preserve, he would be open to a conversation on the best way to go about it.

“Rep. Conroy is proposing a different model – different than the old one, different than the current one – so let’s be honest and open minded about it and take a look at it, just as long as it protects and preserves the open space and environmental habitats,” he said.

Forest preserve commissioner Tim Whelan called the legislation unnecessary and “not very well thought throug,” adding there are plenty of other, more efficient areas to focus cuts.

He said he believes the County Board should be separate from the tasks of the forest preserve.

“Our mission is preservation and acquisition of and preservation of green space ... and the County Board is more about the concepts of economic development and development,” he said. “Each government agency is different from the beginning – that was the motivation for dividing the boards up in the first place.”

Board members frequently meet with staff, constituents and stakeholders outside of official board meetings, Whelan said, providing more perspective.

“I feel that to be able to serve the taxpayers of DuPage County from a forest preserve perspective, it is better to have our own board and discuss these issues every day, every week, so we can assure we have our preservation,” he said.

Transparency fight is renewed in Springfield Here we go again.

Some lawmakers in Springfield again are taking aim at making government less transparent.

Republican state Rep. Joe Sosnowski of Rockford has filed House Bill 261. If passed, it would end the publication of all public notices in newspapers in favor of government websites. The legislation states when a governmental unit is required to provide notice by publication in a newspaper by law, order of court or contract, the governmental unit may publish the notice on an official government website instead of in a newspaper.

You might recall a similar assault of transparency occurred in 2011, when a similar bill was filed. It was unsuccessful.

Proponents of the bill say it would save governments money. The trade off might seem sensible, but a closer look exposes the legislation for what it is: a stealthy assault on open government under the guise of saving money. Newspapers, of course, have a vested interest in this matter: The bill would take revenue from most newspapers.

For decades, however, public notices have been printed in newspapers for a good reason: to provide the greatest verifiable public exposure for the money spent. (Public notices are billed at a discounted ad rate, by the way).

The audience provided by a local newspaper dwarfs the number of readers on a local governmental website. The legislation’s flaws become more apparent with the realization many people still don’t use or have

access to the Internet, especially the poor, the elderly, minorities and the disabled.

Ample proof exists that local governments blatantly disregard the law when it comes to posting information online. A recent audit conducted by the Citizens Advocacy Center studied more than 750 public body websites in Illinois.

In cases where local governments already are required by law to post information on their websites, the compliance rates were abysmal.

Only 73 percent complied with posting notice of upcoming meetings, a mere 57 percent complied with posting proposed meeting agendas and less than half – 48 percent – complied with posting approved meeting minutes.

And remember, Illinois has an excessive number of taxing bodies. Citizens would have to check each one to monitor legal ads, which provide notice of such things as public meetings, budget hearings and government expenditures. That’s much less efficient for the public than having a one-stop source for public notices – the local newspaper.

For people who use the Internet, Illinois newspapers (including this one) already offer a free, online public notice service. Visit www. publicnoticeillinois.com/ to search for public notices from this community and many others.

HB 261 is sitting in the House Counties & Township Committee. That’s where it should die. The bill is a risky step backward for the interests of open, honest, above board government.

In Illinois, it’s absolutely the wrong step to take.

Park District looks to renovate playground ELMHURST – The Elmhurst Park District presented two preliminary playground concepts for its East End Park playground renovation during a meeting Feb. 26, according to a district news release.

The concepts presented reflected feedback received at a previous public meeting.

Many residents showed support for moving the playground from the southeast corner of the park – where it is close to the street – to a more central location, the release stated. The move also would bring the playground closer to the bathrooms.

The renovation also includes updating the playground with modern equipment and technology. The existing equipment is outdated, presenting a challenge when trying to acquire parts for repairs, according to the release.

The new playground will feature ADA-accessible amenities, a shaded seating area, slides and soft surfacing.

The preliminary concepts for the new playground will be presented to the Elmhurst Park District Board of Commissioners at its meeting Wednesday.

The concepts then will be brought back for approval April 8, after which the district will go out for bid on the project.

Elmhurst intersection closes for sewer pipe installation ELMHURST – Madison Street and Berkley Avenue in Elmhurst will be closed for five business days to allow crews to install a pipe that will help relieve sanitary sewer backups, according to a city news release.

The first day of the scheduled closure was Wednesday.

The 18-inch force main pipe from Berkley Avenue onto Madison Street is needed to complete the Southwest Elmhurst Wet Weather Control Facility, which will provide relief for more than 2,300 homes, the release stated.

The facility is expected to be completed this summer.

At the end of each work day during the pipe installation, roads will be open to all traffic and driveways will be accessible.

mind. I couldn’t believe it was a heart attack, but I knew it was,” Idasek said in the release. “I wasn’t going to ignore it.”

He went to the Immediate Care at the Elmhurst Memorial Lombard Health Center, where the pain came back as he entered. Before he knew it, he was in an ambulance.

Prior to the time Idasek left the Lombard Immediate Care, a cardiac alert was announced at Elmhurst Hospital, activating the heart attack team and prompting the Emergency Department and Cardiac Catheterization Lab to prepare for the arrival and treatment of a patient, according to the release.

Typically, a patient goes to the Emergency Department for initial treatment and to confirm they’re having a heart attack. In Idasek’s case, he bypassed the department and went directly to the lab, where an X-ray of the heart’s blood vessels showed one of his three main arteries was 99 percent blocked, the release stated.

Cahill inserted a catheter with a clot extractor to grab and remove the clot that was blocking Idasek’s artery and then inserted a stent to open the artery and restore normal blood supply to the heart, according to the release.

How can Commissioner Neustadt be fair when negotiating city contracts when he indeed works for Downers Grove?

This relationship is too close and should be scrutinized by taxpayers more closely. … Just because someone grows up in Downers Grove and works for Downers Grove does not make them a qualified candidate to be the mayor.

“People are getting tired of having to replace asphalt shingles every 10 to 12 years,” says Brian Cosyns, president of Metal Roof Outlet in Courtland, Ont., which installs hundreds of metal roofing systems yearly. “People are becoming more and more educated on metal roofing, and are seeing the longevity of it ... after completing [a metal roofing] job, you’ve made a big difference in appearance, energy savings and the value of the home.”

The MRA reports non-metal roofs last 17 years on average, but metal roofs can last a lifetime. Though higher in initial costs, they can boost homes’ resale value. They can also cut homeowners’ insurance premiums in some states by up to 35 percent.

Among factors underpinning the growth of metal roofs, few are more important than the roofing systems’ fire-resistance, the alliance reports.

Kyle has enhanced our school not only with his skills on the soccer ield (invited to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-America team and the Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association All-State team to name a few) but through his service at Benet and the community. Kyle founded a program where he brings activities to a local mental health center. Kyle believes that these 18-50 year old citizens with special needs have to stay active and he is doing his best to keep them healthy while bringing his fellow classmates and the Benet Outreach Program along with him. Kyle’s kind and accepting manner is what draws people to him and allows him to bring groups of people together for this endeavor as well as others.

Kyle has been able to maintain a stellar 93.41 GPA while managing an extremely busy schedule. He was taught from the best, his grandfather, what the value of hard work, determination and a great education is. As Kyle states, his grandfather does not see anything as an obstacle and has a “just get it done” attitude. Kyle has adopted this attitude and it has propelled him to where he is today. Libert and the No. 7-seed Dukes started the postseason with a 49-33 win against No. 10 Naperville Central at Glenbard West on Tuesday. With the win York advances to tonight’s regional final against Benet, the No. 2 seed in the East Aurora sectional.

Naperville Central led just once at 12-9 and York responded by scoring the next 10 points. The Dukes pulled away in the second half after leading 21-16 at halftime.

In the final, York takes on a Benet team which it played earlier this season. The Redwings won 39-31 Dec. 13 in Elmhurst, but Thomas, York’s leading scorer, didn’t play that game.

The two teams have met in recent years as part of a nonconference regular season series. Benet has had the upper hand.

“We really want to beat them,” Libert said. “We’ve lost to them the last three years and we lost this year, too.

We didn’t have Jayvon and that’s kind of big. No excuses, but we really want to beat them on Friday.”

I would say this is one of the smarter teams of making that decision of when to attack and when to pull it.”

The Redwings made the Class 4A state final last season, but graduated most of that team. Senior Colin Bonnett and junior Dan Sobolewski have taken over as the team’s leaders and top scorers.

“They’re the benchmark in our area,” Doran said of Benet. “They’ve had tremendous success. I think our kids are excited about the opportunity to get out there and it’s a great challenge for us.”

The Lady Knights competed in the Class 2A state semifinals during the weekend and settled for fourth place for the second year in a row.

IC lost 50-41 against Breese Central in overtime in a state semifinal before losing 51-29 against Bloomington Central Catholic in the third-place game.

In the semifinal, the Knights led by six points heading into the fourth quarter and then failed to score in the overtime.

“These kids always give everything they have and I could not be prouder of their efforts,” coach Aubree Schuett said. “The program is losing

four great kids. There’s 171 teams in 2A and we’re fourth. That’s incredible. It’s an incredible accomplishment and that was my last message to them.

There’s absolutely nothing to hang your heads about.”

The four seniors, Gabby Curran, Erin Maloney, Chiara Gaudio and Lindsay Montoya, depart the program having played big parts in winning IC’s first two state trophies in girls basketball. IC finished the season with a 20-13 record with a schedule against larger enrollment schools with the move to the Metro Suburban West.

Freshman Clair Gibler and junior Anjella Farmer were the Knights’ top two leading scorers so there will be talent back for another run next year.

Sophomore guard Tess Reardon also started for the Knights.

Class 2A semifinal

ELMHURST – When Timothy Christian hosted the 3-point shootout at its Class 3A regional on Tuesday, Joe Davidson struggled.

In Wednesday’s regional semifinal, Davidson reversed the trend and made several big shots.

The sophomore drained five 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 22 points in the Trojans’ 52-46 home win against Westinghouse.

“The first one went in so I kept shooting,” Davidson said. “Joe Bishop and Ben Lodewyk did a great job driving in and they’d kick it out to me so I had wide open looks and I just hit them.”

Davidson opened the game with a 3-pointer, sank a buzzer-beater before halftime to give the Trojans a 22-18 lead at the break and made three more tying or go-ahead 3-pointers in the second half.

“Joe Davidson was just on fire,” TC coach Jack LeGrand said. “We did our 3-point shooting contest yesterday and he struggled in that. He came out here and saved them all for today.”

Timothy (15-11), the No. 11 seed in the sectional, advanced to today’s 7 p.m. regional final against No. 3-seed North Lawndale.

In addition to Davidson’s 22 points, senior Riley Chapman scored 12 points. Robert McGivney contributed six points and 10 rebounds.

“We knew that they were playing well coming in and we were going to have to defensively play one of our better games against them because they just have so many weapons,” Addison Trail coach Brendan Lyons said. “But we’ve been offensively challenged the last two weeks and not putting up a lot of points.”

The Blazers went ahead 6-0 and led for most of the first quarter before cold shooting and turnovers began to turn the tide in favor of the Mustangs, who used a 9-0 run bridging halftime to take a 33-22 lead.

AT was within eight points when junior center Eric Grygo went to the bench with his third foul and the Mustangs extended their lead to 19 in his absence. Grygo finished with a teamhigh 12 points, eight rebounds and three steals.

“Eric started all year for us as a junior and had some really good games early on,” Lyons said. “He kind of plateaued a little bit in the middle of the year but never lost his
