Tired of being the “girl with the dog,” she said she tried a different approach during her sophomore year to help students understand the relationship she and Flash shared.

Laura Wilmarth Tyna, director of leadership, service and engagement at the college, said she worked closely with Yarmolkevich throughout college and tried to provide support for her as she continued to face different hurdles.

“What I recognized was that when she articulated to people on what she needed in order to be successful, she felt empowered about being visually impaired,” Tyna said.

Tyna said in time, Yarmolkevich became an advocate for herself, which allowed her to be a voice for others as well.

Yarmolkevich’s proactive stance to educate her peers included sending out emails, hanging posters and speaking at freshman year seminar classes about the important guidelines when encountering

her and Flash on campus.

“Flash is my set of eyes,” Yarmolkevich said, noting that following the rules are crucial to her safety.

Yarmolkevich said what people do not recognize is their relationship is still in progress.

She explained the two only met three years ago at Guiding Eyes for the Blind, a guide dog school in New York.

“It was July 4, 2012,” Yarmolkevich said, adding she got her “independence” on that day and did not have to rely on others or her cane to help her.

In 26 days, they had to learn how to be with each other – react to commands, avoid distractions, get used to developing routes – and it was an overwhelming process, Yarmolkevich said. She added their relationship is complicated because the boundaries where Flash has to work or can act as a “normal” pet are blurred.

otically, and that’s something still in progress, especially since Flash gets bored easily with daily routines.

Flash, too, didn’t always enjoy attending classes and sometimes led her to other buildings to avoid those classes, she said.

Now, Yarmolkevich and Flash are about to embark on a new adventure together with graduate school only a few months away. She said the decision to attend Illinois State University was mostly driven by the school’s program.

She added most parents, of course, are weary of their children going away, but she wouldn’t do something she’s not comfortable with.

While she anticipates the process of familiarizing herself with the new campus, classes and people will be something to endure, Yarmolkevich said this is just another step she has to take on her own.

“I have to be there for myself,” she said, adding that is a lesson learned and the key to knowing how to help others curb their own challenges.

ELMHURST – Nicole Yarmolkevich, 22, graduated May 30 with a degree in psychology from Elmhurst College.

Like most college graduates, she is on the verge of beginning a new chapter in her life. Containing her composure and masking her fears, she tries to remain confident and excited as the countdown to graduate school begins.

Yarmolkevich said she does not view herself as an “inspiration” because in its entirety, graduating college is a great achievement for anyone. She said everyone has their own story, their own set of challenges they have to overcome, and being legally blind was her own obstacle.

Yarmolkevich explained that at 3 months old, doctors recognized she couldn’t see, but she was later diagnosed with Leber’s congenital amaurosis, a genetic disease that greatly impairs her central and peripheral vision.

It was not until Yarmolkevich got to college that she felt “awkward” and sensed others tried to avoid her because of her condition, she said. To an extent, she noticed other students asked a lot of questions about her condition or referred to her friends to provide answers.

After bringing her seeing-eye dog, Flash, on campus and to her classes, Yarmolkevich became aware other students did not understand the significant role Flash played in her everyday life.

“People don’t know that I know when they pet my dog,” Yarmolkevich said, adding how

Elmhurst library renovations nearly complete

By F. AMANDA TUGADE atugade@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – While the Elmhurst Public Library’s renovations are expected to wrap up within the next two weeks, visitors are already enjoying some of the new features.

For Jeremy Bernas, he found the newly installed and enclosed Teen Space to be a helpful, quiet space to tutor some of his students. Bernas, an Elmhurst College student and education major, said before, he and his students would study in the available lounge areas near the information desks.

Bernas said that space was not ideal for his students to learn because they were easily distracted by the consistent flow of people to and from the stacks or the study rooms.

The teen room is “quieter” and equipped with dry-erase boards and computers to help cater to his students’ one-on-one needs, he said.

Although that is only one of the functions the teen room can provide, Mary Beth Campe, the library director, said the purpose of the area is to provide teenagers a place to just “hang out.” Campe said the room also has a

Elmhurst resident and college student Mariam Mirza said she found it difficult to reserve a study room, especially when it came close to finals.

Mirza said although she knows study rooms are more accessible during the summer, to have more of them available to patrons is a plus since they are so popular.

Campe said another aspect to highlight is the way they now display some of their books on their new shelves.

She explained that traditionally, people will go through the library stacks and find books with their spines facing outward, but now, they have created a section called Spotlight, where recommended books are displayed with their covers facing outward.

Library employee Alanna Gonzalez said she knows the saying is “don’t judge a book by its cover,” but the new display creates a different browsing experience for patrons.

Campe said the total cost of the library’s renovations is $1.7 million, and they started the planning process two years ago. Campe said seeing people “flock” to the study rooms and use the new spaces make the changes worthwhile.

As donations grew over time, the items were moved from the basement to a cottage facility right next to the church.

Parker Wrzeszcz, associate pastor of the church, and Jackie Lawrence, the food pantry’s director, have recognized they need a bigger facility to accommodate their clients and volunteers, as well as their items. The two have partnered with architect Jim Ruprecht of Daedulus Development, a local firm, to make that happen.

Wrzeszcz, Lawrence and Ruprecht appeared June 8 before the Public Works and Buildings Committee to make sure they would be able to build the new facility on the church’s parking lot without interrupting utilities. They next will appear before the Zoning and Planning Commission and the Elmhurst City Council to continue the approval process.

Because the pantry is so small, clients have to wait outside for others to finish their shopping, which makes them “visible” to those who pass by York Street, Wrzeszcz and Ruprecht said. To have a waiting room inside the facility would help preserve the dignity of the clients, Ruprecht said.

Also because of limited space, volunteers are unable to stock items while clients are shopping, which becomes an inconvenience and a disservice for both, Wrzeszcz said. The facility is not ADA accessible, has only one door that serves as both an entrance and exit and does not have a receiving bay area for donations.

“It’s a basement of an old home,” Lawrence said, adding the facility has insufficient storage, no bathrooms, and no proper heating and air-conditioning system.

Wrzeszcz said the church and the Elmhurst-Yorkfield Food Pantry have created a campaign to raise money to build a 2,500-square-foot facility on the northeast corner of the church’s parking lot.

The total estimated cost for constructing the pantry is $700,000, and the pantry is looking to gain additional funding from a capital campaign to be able to buy a refrigeration and operating reserve system, Ruprecht said, adding the project would take about five months to complete.

It should be open for use by November, Lawrence said.

The pantry already has received donations and “gifts in kind” like windows and plumbing materials from community members, which have helped a great deal in the pantry’s progress, she said.

Lawrence and Ruprecht said they look forward to making sure the new facility meets their clients’ and volunteers’ needs.

“This is a much safer, brighter and more updated facility, and if we can serve more people efficiently, that would be great,” Lawrence said.

Kelly’s 14-year-old son “tried to get the cat away from his mother” and was able to call 911, but Kelly took the cat from her son and held it down while Samantha continued to attack the cat, “eventually killing it,” the release stated.

“The allegations in this case are beyond disturbing,” DuPage County State Attorney Robert B. Berlin said in the release. “The very idea that Samantha two adults would work in Palermo tandem to kill a helpless family pet is sickening and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

The release also stated Kelly and Samantha are scheduled for a court appearance in early July, and as a part of their bond’s condition, they were ordered to not possess any animals if they post bond.

ELMHURST – A DuPage County judge set a $125,000 bond for a mother and daughter charged with one count of aggravated animal cruelty, a Class 4 felony, after stabbing their family cat to death.

The alleged incident occurred the evening of June 10, after Kelly Palermo, 50, of Chicago, Kelly visited her daughter, Palermo Samantha Palermo’s, home in Elmhurst, according to the DuPage County State’s Attorney news release.

The release stated after Kelly “became angry with the family cat,” she picked up the cat and Samantha, 21, proceeded to stab the cat multiple times.

This year will be no exception. The twoday event is set for 6 to 11 p.m. Friday, June 19, and 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, June 20, in Villa Park’s Ardmore Business District at Ardmore Avenue and Park Boulevard.

Why do people enjoy the annual festival?

“The Villa Park Summerfest is a great community event that has a huge block party feel,” said Mike Gats, chairman of the volunteer Summerfest Commission.

Friday’s festivities will include live entertainment on the main stage, food, drinks, a car show and bags tournament. The fun continues Saturday with a full day of fun for everyone, including more live entertainment, activity booths hosted by community groups, business vendors, games, and more.

“The live music and beer tent are great way to spend a Friday night with local food

vendors,” Gats said. “Saturday brings an arts and crafts show along with all the children’s activities, including a free face painter booth, balloon artist and magic show.”

Every year sees an increase in attendees, Gats said.

New attractions for the 2015 fest include an expanded car show on Friday night and a second day of bags tournaments. Coordinators have also added a trackless train ride for small children.

Another perk of the Villa Park Summerfest?

“We keep all of our prices low so all of our community families and afford a fun day at the event,” Gats said.

Admission is free. Children’s activities require tickets or a $10 all-day wristband.

Providing seniors with transit options a key service of township Now that spring has sprung and summer will bring the nice weather, folks like to get out more often to shop or socialize or make their appointment with the doctor or dentist or beauty shop.

York Township Senior Transportation Manager Joan Biba and her crew of drivers do a wonderful job for those of you who are members of our Senior Center. And, for those of you COMMUNITY who are not familiar with VOICE what Joan and her drivers John W. do, here’s a quick rundown of Valle the services they provide.

Our Senior Transportation Department provides rides for York Township residents who are at least 55 years of age and registered with the Township. To register to become eligible for our transportation services, call our Senior Center at 630-620-2424.

We have 3 basic categories of rides: 1) to and from Township Hall, 2) essential rides consisting of doctor appointments, grocery shopping, etc. and 3) nonessential rides including beauty shop, mall shopping, etc. Last year, we provided 10,866 rides.

4,552 of them were medical appointments.

We have door-to-door scheduled rides between 8:15 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Seniors can make reservations from a maximum of two weeks to a minimum of two working days in advance.

Our fleet of vehicles consists of five late model sedans and one bus, which accommodates eight passengers and two wheelchairs.

We have eight part-time drivers. They are dedicated and hard-working individuals who provide our seniors with courteous, efficient and – more importantly – safe transportation.

Even though gas prices are rising again and other expenses keep going up, we pledge to continue to serve our seniors’ transportation needs through these difficult economic times and continue our ongoing efforts to improve the quality of life in York Township.

Also, as the summer progresses and the days start heating up, I want to remind you that seniors who need relief from the heat can stay in our air-conditioned auditorium, open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. If there is an event or class going on in the auditorium, please be discreet. Either join in or find a comfy chair in the hallway until the event is over.

ELMHURST – Elmhurst resident Gary Goldberg, 70, has built a shrine that chronicles his short-lived music career in the mid-1960s with The Cave Dwellers, a five-piece classic rock band. A photo of 22-year-old Goldberg and his college-aged bandmates are at the heart of the shrine.

They are dressed in matching striped shirts, dark pants, dark shoes and furry, caveman-like vests. Their hair looks stylishly unruly, which matches the disdained look on their faces. Overall, the photo is a clear illustration of the image the band tried to achieve at the time – rebels without a cause.

Now, the band – with mostly new members – is preparing for an upcoming show June 17 in Stickney and the original group’s 50th anniversary in August.

The Cave Dwellers were signed to Jim-Ko Inc. in 1967, a record label that prized itself as “the Chicago sound in records.” Under that label, the band produced two songs, “You Know Why” and “Run Around,” which ultimately became their biggest hit.

The visitors had another dangerous opportunity in first-half stoppage time, as some nice interplay between Mautz and Taryn Hemmings sent the 25-year-old Mautz into the box on the right, DiBernardo nearly capitalizing on the layoff by releasing a low first-time effort that was saved by a diving Chantel Jones.

While the Red Stars defense had looked solid throughout the opening period, the Flash took control after the break and put on an impressive attacking display. Goldberg said Poulous was the president of their fan club, and much like members of his band, he never knew what happened to them after they parted ways in the early 1970s.

“We weren’t superstars,” he said, adding after a few years of performing live, recording in studios and changing band members, he just “got tired of it” and spent the following decades enveloped in the first wave of the cellphone

business with his brother.

Budd said attending the lecture gave the two the opportunity to pick up where they left off several years ago. Not much has changed between them, and their similar taste in humor and music are still in tact, he said.

“We just both look old, of course,” Budd said. “Time had gone by so fast.”

Goldberg and Budd said they have recruited new members to the band to complete The Cave Dwellers, including lead singer and rhythm guitartist Joe Krowka, bassist Gary Cleland, lead guitarist Cliff Killion and drummer Danny Mayor. Budd, Krowka, Cleland, Killion and Mayor are Berywn residents and previously met through other music endeavors.

The Cave Dwellers continue to perform at venues and festivals throughout the Chicago area.

Goldberg and Krowka said they maintain the “classic rock” vibe of the band by playing original songs by The Cave Dwellers and covering popular songs that appeal to their crowd.

As a new member of a restored band, Krowka looks forward to the camaraderie he and his bandmates share together as performers, he said.

Goldberg said resurrecting The Cave Dwellers and composing music “makes him feel young.”

“I just enjoyed playing, writing and creating,” he said.

“And that’s what I’ve done all my life.”

ELMHURST – All the park’s a stage when GreenMan Theatre Troupe presents its first outdoor play, Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

Elmhurst’s Berens Park becomes the forest setting, where stage and audience will be sheltered beneath a tent.

“We still have open air and breezes, and folks can bring a picnic and scout out a place in Berens Park to enjoy food before the show,” said director David Soria of Lombard, GreenMan artistic director and co-founder of the troupe.

Soria has trimmed some of the text, but left the original wording intact. “‘Midsummer’ is such a delightful play,” he said. “The language is very straightforward, [and] it is an ideal show for folks that are newcomers to Shakespeare. ‘Midsummer’ weaves together several stories, with the characters crossing paths in unexpected ways. The plot of the play mixes mismatched lovers, quarreling fairies, mistaken identities, amateur theatricals and a flower that magically makes one fall in love instantly.”

Tips along with a portion of the proceeds went towards the five partner agencies and KoenigRubloff Cares Foundation.

The effort continued as office transformed their parking lot into a collection site for non-perishable food items, clothing, household items, furniture, books, toiletries, duffle bags and backpacks. The partner agencies set up collection stations onsite, and Boerman Moving & Storage provided transportation and volunteers for large and heavy items.

ELMHURST – Soccer has played such a big role in Alyssa Kovatchis’ life for so many years that it seems surprising she would give up an opportunity to keep playing competitively.

But that’s exactly what the recent York graduate did.

Kovatchis had committed to Colorado State at the beginning of her junior year, accepting a scholarship offer to play Division I soccer. About four months ago, she changed her mind.

“I decided it was going to be too much so I decided I just wanted to focus on school,” Kovatchis said.

The tough decision meant this spring with York’s varsity team could end up being her last season of soccer. If it was indeed her final hurrah, she went out with a bang. Kovatchis earned all-state honors this season and is the Suburban Life All-Area MVP. Kovatchis’ skill as a midfielder is apparent very quickly. She is able to beat defenders one on one regularly and is also an adept goal scorer.

Those skills come from years of playing at a high level. She and twin sister Jamie Kovatchis started playing AYSO when they were three years old.

They later joined Team Elmhurst to play travel ball together. At that point Alyssa started playing three-on-three tournaments with players from the Naperville Soccer Association Jaguars club.

That’s where Alyssa learned her ball skills. She played as the sweeper and her teammates played as wingers.

“I was the last line of defense so I had to get my foot skills going,” Kovatchis said. “I learned some new moves.”

Both Kovatchis sisters made York’s varsity team as freshmen. Alyssa was the dynamic playmaker while Jamie

was the rock-solid defender.

The twins played on every team together growing up until this year.

Jamie decided she wasn’t going to play in college so she didn’t play club and she tore her ACL in a playoff game with the York girls basketball team this winter. That meant the sisters wouldn’t be able to play together this spring for the Dukes on the soccer field.

“It’s kind of sad not to be able to play together our last year,” Alyssa Kovatchis said.

Jamie Kovatchis’ injury wasn’t the only one York had to deal with this season. At one point seven starters were out at the same time. The Dukes still won a regional and nearly upset Hinsdale Central in a sectional semifinal with Alyssa giving York a 2-0 lead before the Red Devils came back.

“Alyssa is Alyssa, she amazes me every time,” York coach Don Vana said. “Anytime there’s a big goal needed, Alyssa seems to be the one that gets it for us. She’s a high-quality player.

We’re definitely going to miss her and the creative goals she has scored in her career here.”

With high school behind her, Alyssa is preparing for life after soccer. Without an athletic scholarship she is working two jobs this summer and wants to be an elementary school teacher. She is headed to the University of Illinois, but is keeping the window open for a possible return with the idea of playing club soccer after adjusting to life as a college freshman.

She may feel sad about soccer being behind her, but she is excited about her teaching future.

“I really like little kids,” Kovatchis said. “We also did some things on my soccer team with little kids and I really felt the connection to them. York softball goes down swinging to end ‘amazing season’

By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com SKOKIE – York’s softball team came up short in its sectional final loss against Oak Park-River Forest, but the Dukes almost literally went out with a bang.

The Huskies won 9-6 at Niles West on June 6, but the Dukes rallied for the final four runs of the game, all off home runs.

Kyra Kroll hit a three-run blast in the bottom of the seventh inning and Sarah Milkowski singled to follow, but the comeback effort halted there.

“We can’t hang our heads,” Milkowski said. “We put up a couple runs at the end and that’s just the mentality that we have, the heart we have.

“This has been, I think for many of these kids and myself, one of the greatest seasons I think we’ve ever been apart of,” York coach Jenna Bode said. “Just the personalities on the team, everybody just got along. It’s been great. I think the way they stick together is incredible so I’m proud of them for that.”

The loss marked the end for a group of seniors that saw a lot of success in York’s Kelly green. Milkowski, Maciejewski, Bandy, Audrey Kosman and Isabella Jaeger were key seniors during one of the most successful stretches in the program’s history. York has won four straight regionals and

“York softball was always kind of the who cares, but we made a name for ourselves,” Milkowski said. “Every single person who’s ever played York softball from freshmen, to JV, to varsity, everyone has that heart and that family connection. We all just love playing with each other. That’s what I’m going to miss most, just playing with these girls. I love them to death.”

Milkowski, Solem, Bandy, Karnatz, Jaeger and Gabby Magnifico earned West Suburban Silver all-conference honors for York this spring.

Juniors Solem, Karnatz and Magnifico will lead the way for the Dukes next season along with Kroll, who had a standout season as a freshman.

“This is something we dreamed of accomplishing since we came into high school,” Valentini said. “It’s making school history over and over again.”

Even Dickmann, who has played in big matches for his club team, Sports Performance, at national tournaments and will play at Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne in college, said the stage of the state tournament got his nerves going.

“Last year for club my team was playing for a medal [at a national tournament] and even that did not feel anything like this,” Dickmann said after the quarterfinal win. “I actually felt tense in this game, which was the first time for a very long time.”

For Grant, a former AT player, to guide the team to its highest level was an especially gratifying accomplishment.

“We had tons of alumni out there, kids I played with, coached,” Grant said. “There’s no better place we can be. We played all the possible matches we could. We’re playing on the last day of the season, all 42 matches. I’m really proud of this team.”

HOFFMAN ESTATES – Only two boys volleyball teams get to end the season on a win, and Addison Trail got to be one of them.

The Blazers didn’t get to end on the win they were hoping for, but the team still set some program records. AT topped Sandburg 25-18, 25-23 in the state third-place match June 6 at Hoffman Estates High School.

It was already the team’s first appearance at state, but they add a state trophy, the school’s first since boys gymnastics took third in 2003, and set a new school record for wins in a season with 35.

“Our coach said before the game that only two teams end the season on a winning streak,” senior middle blocker Jack Vrchota said. “We wanted to make that one of our main priorities. We wanted everyone to know that we are one of the best teams in the state.”
