Technology Center of DuPage teacher and chef wins award

By AIMEE BARROWS editorial@mysuburbanlife.com ADDISON – Chef Faith Jennetta feels her job as a culinary educator and coordinator of the Culinary, Pastry Arts and Hospitality Management Program at Technology Center of DuPage in Addison is all about her students.

So, when she won the Sysco/CAFÉ (Career Advancement for Food- Faith service Educators) FoodJennetta service Educator of the Year award this spring, her $1,500 cash prize went to help a student further her culinary education.

“I applied for that award to get the money into that young lady’s hands.

She was exceptional, and she couldn’t afford to go to school,” Jennetta said.

“But now she is able to go into an apprenticeship program, working in food service at Notre Dame. I’m proud of the award, but my job is to give my kids opportunities.”

Jennetta, 55, was named the first Foodservice of the Year – Secondary Education winner in April. She was selected by a panel of five foodservice educators from around the country and competed against 15 other culinary educators. She sent her resume, as well as testimony from her boss, colleagues and current and former students as part of the application process.

“I love what I do,” she said. “I’m here to help students find their way. Teaching is hard nowadays, and it’s a different generation. Some students don’t get the same opportunities I had while growing up, and I get to help them.”

Jennetta, who is a professional pastry chef, is from New Jersey but moved to the area 13 years ago when she began working at TCD. Prior to that she worked as a chef in hotels and restaurants and even owned her own business.

“In order to work at TCD, you have to have a professional background,” she explained. “Students need to have math, science and problem-solving skills to be successful in this business.

If their goal is to manage a facility or own their own bakery, they need to know how to manage a staff, know about the product, as well as purchasing equipment. The food is actually a very small percentage of the food service industry.”

TCD is the career and technical education school for 24 high schools in DuPage County. Jennetta’s students are juniors and seniors who are interested in careers in the food service industry, and her class counts toward their elective credits. She teaches two three-hour classes every day.

“The goal is to give students career path exposure, and it’s about students finding their passion and running with it,” she said. “But I have high standards, and I hold my students to them.

I tell them that this is hard work but not to give up.”

Kevin Larsen, 25, of Bensenville, is one of Jennetta’s former students. He said she was a great educator and had a lot of respect from her students. Larsen is now working as a sous chef in Chicago and said he wouldn’t be there without her guidance.

“She was very stern because she wanted us to be the best, and she wanted us to be disciplined,” he said. “She

gave us advice that we can use not only for our jobs, but for the rest of our lives.”

Jennetta said she’s proudest of her alumni, who often come back to the school to mentor and encourage her current students. She said they help her students get jobs or internships. “(The alumni) are giving my students real-life advice and real-life experience. It’s nice for me, too, because I now have a peer relationship with my former students,” she said.

Daniel Moody, 25, is one of Jennetta’s former students who comes back to help. He’s now working as a sous chef in Western Springs.

“She’s such a motivating and passionate person, and was just an awesome instructor,” he said. “She is the reason I go back to the school.”

Alvaro Lima, another former student, said Jennetta was “almost like a mother” to her students.

“She did everything she could to help her students get scholarships, and even today, she still reaches out to see how we’re doing,” Lima said. “She believed in me, and she pushed me further than I thought I could go.”

Jennetta teaches anywhere from 80 to 150 students a term. She said that several of those students become interested in the culinary arts because of what they see on the Food Network, and she believes it’s her job to “demystify the TV image” of the industry.

“We want to harness their excitement, but I tell them that what they see is glamorized for television,” she said.

“But who’s to say they won’t end up on TV? I push them to do their personal best.”

ELMHURST – Elmhurst was hit by about 5 inches of rain June 15, causing flooding and closing roads throughout the city.

The city received the heaviest concentration of rain between 4:40 and 5 p.m., City Engineer Kent Johnson said, explaining Elmhurst experienced a “capacity issue,” where the rain came down so quickly that the stormwater system couldn’t handle that amount of rain in such a short time.

ComEd reported 1,700 Elmhurst customers were without power, but power was restored by 10 p.m., according to a city news release.

Closed roads included the Palmer Drive Underpass, Illinois Route 83, North Avenue at Interstate 290, Spring Road, portions of York Street and numerous side streets. Most roads were reopened by 11 p.m., and all roads were reopened by the afternoon June 16, the release stated.

Johnson said crews worked all night to make sure the Palmer Drive Underpass would be passable for residents.

Crews included members of the Elmhurst Public Works, Police and Fire departments, who were called in to respond to numerous calls for service due to flooding, downed power lines and stranded motorists, according to the release. Public Works crews also checked and cleaned storm drain inlets to be sure they were free of debris in preparation for the storm.

City operations and pumps were functioning during the severe weather, and the Elmhurst Quarry was used to divert water from Salt Creek, the release stated.

“Music is universal. It’s for all ages,” said Christy Sopko, an event coordinator at Elmhurst City Centre.

Sopko said the block party, which has been a recent summer installment, invites local musicians to perform popular cover songs downtown to “jazz up the ambiance of the area” and ultimately create a better shopping, outdoor dining and relaxing experience for Elmhurst residents and visitors.

For the past four years, Elmhurst musician and producer Scottie Long has been in charge of booking three- to five-piece rock, pop and country bands to perform at City Centre Plaza and single acoustic singers at street corners south of the railroad tracks.

6 Stanley Cup makes Elmhurst its home before Blackhawks’ win

An estimated 105.7 million visitors to Illinois pumped more than $31 billion in 2013 (2014 figures are pending) for professional meeting organizers, venues, food and beverage, accommodations, transportation, recreation, entertainment, retail, travel services and more, according to the U.S. Travel Association and the state’s Office of Tourism.

In DuPage, meeting attendees and other visitors – such as vacationers and guests at family and class reunions, weddings, sports tournaments and such – contributed a record $2.316 billion to the state’s economy, an increase of 3.1 percent from 2012’s revenue.

Visitor spending in DuPage produced $177 million in tax receipts, generating $133.95 million for the state and $38.27 million for the county. Those dollar totals grew by 5 percent and 2.4 percent, respectively, from the previous year.

In Elmhurst, the 4 percent tax on room rentals at the city’s four hotels (Clarion Hotel, Courtyard by Marriott, SpringHill Suites by Marriott and Extended Stay America) generate as much as $600,000 annually, which is used to fund the Elmhurst Historical Museum, Third Annual Elmhurst Cycling Classic around Elmhurst College on June 24 and other programs and events. The city also boasts the Elmhurst Art Museum, Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art and Theatre Historical Society of America, along with a variety of parades, concerts and cultural events.

Tourism in Illinois also ranks as one of the state’s largest employers, with some 301,100 jobs (or one out of every 11) directly related to meetings and visitor industry. In DuPage, $584 million in payroll and 21,300 hospitality jobs are attributed to serving our guests, increasing by 2.8 percent and 1.1 percent, respectively, over the prior year.

That’s big business. Especially in a state battling budget deficits.

If you’re going to call anyone a dictator, it should be House Speaker Michael Madigan. He’s mostly responsible for the mess that the state is in. He’s been in power for 30 years. Gov. [Bruce] Rauner has been in office for five months. Put the blame where it belongs.

I never agree much with sportscaster Bob Costas. When he speaks on nonsports issues, I don’t agree with him much. But I totally agree with him about Bruce Jenner getting this Arthur Ashe courageous award in July on ESPN. Costas said Jenner getting the award was crass, tabloid stuff. I agree with comments regarding toxic chemicals in our community. I’m pregnant and [I] can’t even walk in my subdivision, sit in my yard or open my windows because so many of our neighbors have lawn chemical treatments every month.

It’s amazing to me that after all these years and the knowledge we now have about the cancers and other serious problems these products cause that people still use them. It is their choice, but it also affects my family, my pets and myself, which isn’t fair. No chemical is safe; think about what you are doing.

Founded in 1864, the Kendall County Record was purchased by the Farrens in 1973. The Farrens founded the Plano Record in 1976. They acquired the Oswego Ledger in 1979 and the Fox Valley Sentinel in 1980. The two papers were consolidated and called the Ledger-Sentinel. The Sandwich Record was launched by the Farrens in 1985.

“The decision to sell was a difficult one,” publisher Jeff Farren said. “We believe Shaw will be able to continue providing good newspapers for our readers and advertisers with more online content in the future.”

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Founded in 1851, Shaw Media is the third-oldest continuously owned and operated media company in the U.S. It owns and operates newspapers, magazines, websites and other publications throughout Chicago’s suburbs and northern Illinois, as well as in Iowa.

No doubt about it, a newly constructed home has tremendous appeal. Everything is fresh and clean, just waiting for you and your family to move in, and the finishes and fixtures are exactly what you want.

True, it costs quite a pretty penny, but you’re sure it will be worth it. Or will it? Will your brand new property keep its value … or might it be like a new car, which starts depreciating the minute you drive it off the lot? The answer, you’ll see, is not so simple.

Compare old and new Compare the pool of properties on the market in terms of price, size, and amenities.

Bear in mind, though, that you’re looking at apples and oranges; New homes are built to the latest standards of energy efficiency, while older houses usually have the advantage of larger rooms and thicker walls.

Gia Mia pizzeria fires up artisanal menu WHEATON – A contemporary wood plank facade is the sleek new wrapping for the latest restaurant enterprise of chef-owner Brian Goewey, who named Gia Mia after his youngest daughter. It opened in downtown Wheaton in April and specializes in wood-fired pizza, homemade pasta dishes and small plates, all ideal for sharing the inventive fresh flavors the chef already is known for at fire + wine in Glen Ellyn, where he’s been a partner.

Gia Mia describes itself as a pizza bar that emphasizes farm-to-fork Italian cooking.

The interior features pale shades of wood and brick that set a warm tone, along with dangling, industrial-chic bulbs for light.

A crowd set a convivial tone in the front dining room the weeknight we visited. The Blackhawks were playing a game running up to the finals, and a television there and one at the bar kept interested fans up on the score.

We opted for the mellow bar area, which offers lots of stools, and a cozy dining space of its own, all the better to watch the action at the pizza oven. The controlled inferno holds court in all its red-mosaic-tiled glory in the corner and has ringside seating for diners.

The wine list is extensive and offers some plucky suggestions off the beaten path, such as an Austrian white – Grüner Veltliner – for a light summer aperitif. The mixologists also proffer craft beer selections.

We opened with a smallplate offering of veal meatballs basking in a zesty roasted tomato sauce and topped with little caps of whipped ricotta. The creamy cheese mimicked the velvety texture of the mild-flavored, finely ground meat.

We’re glad we tried one of the unusual vegetable dishes: charred cauliflower. The delicate roasted veggie provided the perfect canvas for a palette of flavors drawn from green and black olives, radicchio, parsley, pine nut crumb top-

Next up had to be woodfired pizza, so we decided on the pancetta and arugula combination, which arrived with a tasty, hand-formed crust drizzled with olive oil, and showing the tell-tale light charring on the edges.

Prepared Neapolitan style, it had delectable smatterings of house-made mozzarella to contrast with the pancetta – an Italian spin on cured bacon – along with tomatoes, garlic, oregano and lemon. It was covered in fresh, baby arugula, a wonderfully peppery green.

but next time, we plan on two pizzas and some more of the creative vegetables and salads on the menu such as sugar snap peas prepared with shallots, garlic, mint, whipped ricotta and extra virgin olive oil, or the Tuscan black kale with pear, sunflower seeds, radish, candied dates and lemon.

Both pasta and pizza crust are available gluten-free, and the restaurant offers a varied menu for children.

As for dessert, we loved the Italian pudding and sorbet combo, an abundance of rich-

Black Hawk College’s Santos plays two ways on diamond

Last year, Anthony Santos led York baseball to a conference title while starring on the mound and at bat. He is still a two-way player in college after playing at Black Hawk College in Moline.

Santos hit .282 with a .398 on-base percentage after drawing 12 walks in 92 plate appearances. As a pitcher Santos had a 3.70 ERA in five starts spanning 24 1/3 innings. He had a 2-3 record on the mound.

Ryan Hinchley, a York graduate, was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the ninth round of the MLB Draft on June 9.

Hinchley just finished a four-year career at UIC, where he was used as a reliever all four years. This spring, the senior left-hander emerged as the Flames’ closer. He racked up 10 saves with a 3-2 record in 27 appearances, which was the most on the UIC staff.

He pitched 37 innings and had a 3.89 ERA with 50 strikeouts and a .195 batting average against.

Hinchley was a second-team Horizon League selection and helped the Flames win the regular season title in the conference.

After signing for a $25,000 signing bonus, Hinchley was assigned to the rookie level affiliate Great Falls Voyagers in the Pioneer League. The Pioneer League regular season schedule runs from June 18 to Sept. 8.
