ADDISON – The Addison Public Library will have a larger area for teens and more community gathering space at this time next year, after the library undergoes a reconfiguration later this year.

Mary Medjo Me Zengue, library director, said residents are using the library as more of a gathering space, and the reconfigurations will provide more room for community groups to host meetings or classes.

“We moved into the building in 2008, so people might be wondering why we’re renovating already,” she said. “We think it’s a great idea that people are using the library, so we’re trying to give them what they need.”

John Kokoris, community outreach coordinator, said the library’s teen area is too small to accommodate the large number of kids who come to the library after school.

“They’re good kids, but they see the library as a gathering space, and the older generation uses it more for silent reading and studying,” he said. “So we’re going to separate the areas more so the teens can be social, and [adult] patrons can have a quiet area.”

Lisa Knauf, a library trustee and former board president, said the reconfigurations will allow the library’s space to be maximized. For example, she said, the adult services desk on the second floor will be smaller because the staff moves around the floor frequently while helping guests instead of sitting behind a large desk.

“We also have a number of small study rooms that are being used in groups of two or three, and people aren’t using the larger room that seats eight,” Knauf explained. “So we’re

Patrons might notice fewer shelves and large reference books after the reconfiguration. Knauf said people are using online resources more frequently now and there’s less of a need for hard-copy reference books.

“We don’t need all those shelves anymore, so we’re scaling down our reference collection,” she said.

There will be some changes to the children’s area, with more places for adults to interact with their children, Knauf said.

“Patrons have asked for more adult seating in the children’s area because they want to be near their kids while the kids are playing or reading,” she said. “So we’ll have more places where adults and kids can sit together and read together.”

The library, which is paying for the project with reserve funds they’ve accu-

mulated, is still in the process of developing a timetable. Medjo Me Zengue said the board just approved it in May, and she hopes it will go up for construction bids this fall. She thinks the construction should take about six months, and should be “wrapped up” next spring.

“Our plan is that this won’t be too disruptive to the patrons and we plan to keep the library open, but some areas may be off limits,” Medjo Me Zengue said.

The idea for the reconfigurations came up after receiving public input, and Medjo Me Zengue said it’s important that the library give the community “what they’re telling us they need.”

“There’s constant demand for space and we have to turn some people away,” she said. “I think our community is very proud of the library, and we need to stay current. I think the public will be very excited.”

Knauf said she thinks the making the most of the library’s space is “good stewardship of the building.”

“The community will be pleased,” she said. “People are now using the library for so much more than books.

We have Zumba classes, yoga classes, and people come for Internet and wireless access. All these things are getting people into the building.”

BENSENVILLE – A portion of Thomas Drive south of Thorndale Avenue in Bensenville is scheduled to close during two weekends in June for sewer construction and pavement patching as part of the Illinois Route 390 Project, according to an Illinois Tollway news release.

Electronic message signs and construction signage will be put in place to alert drivers in advance of the closures and detour.

As long as weather permits, Thomas Drive will close at 9 p.m. June 5 for the weekend and reopen by 5 a.m. June 8, the release stated. A similar closure

will be scheduled for the following weekend from June 12 through June 15.

Construction will include the installation of a sewer and drainage system, as well as pavement patching, according to the release. It is scheduled to be completed this year.

The work is needed to prepare for construction of Illinois Route 390 and new frontage roads east of Interstate 290 for the Elgin O’Hare Western Access Project, the release stated.

As part of the Route 390 project, a new system of frontage roads is being constructed parallel to Route 390 to maintain easy access between existing businesses and residential areas adjacent to

the new route, according to the release.

Between Wood Dale Road and York Road, frontage roads will be built on both sides of Route 390. The frontage roads will be one way between Wood Dale Road and Supreme Drive and transition to two way between Supreme Drive and York Road, the release stated.

The Illinois Tollway is coordinating construction with the village of Bensenville and DuPage County.

ELMHURST – For the past two decades, Elmhurst residents have welcomed a farmers market to the city-owned parking lot at York and Division streets.

The market, which began June 3 and runs until late October, is a long-standing tradition sponsored by the York and Vallette Business Association, and this year, it brings with it something new: the inclusion of the Elmhurst-Yorkfield Food Pantry.

The Rev. Matt Parker Wrzeszcz, associate pastor of the Yorkfield Presbyterian Church, said the idea is simple: to provide a place at the market for shoppers, who have supported the farmers, to donate fresh produce to the pantry.

Wrzeszcz and Jackie Lawrence, the food pantry’s coordinator, said they typically receive donations of canned fruits and vegetables along with “last-date” sold items that have a shorter shelf life, and while those do suffice, contributions of fresh fruits and vegetables from the farmers market present an alternative for their clients.

The market is an initiative to support local and regional farmers in Illinois and to create a fresh perspective on grocery shopping for residents.

Each year, farmers bring bushels of seasonal fruits and vegetables and other naturally

grown products such as bread, honey and oils.

Through a careful selection process, business association members Todd Benson and Adam Krzemkowski look for different types of farmers who can rein in that new experience. “(Farmers markets) are not there to replace supermarkets,” Benson said, adding the purpose of the market is not only to thread farmers and residents together but also to provide a platform for the community to come closer together.

Wrzeszcz and Jackie Lawrence said they look forward to continuing to garner more awareness for the pantry, which has been a part of the Elmhurst community since 1983.

It started in a small walk-in closet in the basement of Yorkfield Presbyterian Church and only served Elmhurst residents.

It has since expanded to reach about 400 clients every month and help other communities including Addison, Villa Park, Oak Brook, Bensenville, Hillside, Berkeley and Lombard, Lawrence said.

Wrzeszcz said he hopes the pantry’s presence at the market will help people know they are there to help their neighbors and their friends.

For Krzemkowski, that cultivates the message he wants Elmhurst residents to know about the farmers market: It is a community effort that strengthens all of them together.

District 205 names new superintendent SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA ELMHURST – Dr. David A. Moyer, a three-year superintendent for Moline schools, was named Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205’s new superintendent June 3 by the Board of Education.

“Elmhurst is a district that aims to be the best,” Moyer said in a district news release. “It is an honor to have a chance to serve in a community that values educational excellence and the importance of public education in this manner.”

Moyer previously served as an assistant superintendent in a Lake Villa school district and a superintendent in a Wisconsin district, according to the release.

In April, Moyer was selected as one

of the 21 regional Superintendents of Distinction in Illinois.

In Moline-Coal Valley District 40, Moyer led an effort to construct a state-of-the-art elementary school without impacting the community’s tax rate and open the region’s only dual-language immersion program, according to the release.

Moyer has a doctorate in educational administration from Northern Illinois University and master’s degrees in educational administration from Northern Illinois University and sports administration from Eastern Kentucky University. He completed a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from the University of Wisconsin.

Moyer will begin his term as superintendent July 1.

Residents’ downtown plan input focuses on business, college, arts

atugade@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – Darrell Whistler, chairman of the Zoning and Planning Commission, asked about 70 Elmhurst residents gathered May 28 at City Hall to keep one thing in mind: “What do you want this downtown to represent?”

With the help of hired consultants Nikolas Davis, Matt Filter and Dan Gardner of Houseal Lavigne Associates, a Chicago-based firm that hosted the May workshop to gather public input for Elmhurst’s updated downtown plan, residents narrowed down a long list of ideas to four major requests.

They wanted to find businesses to occupy vacant retail spaces, as well as diversify commercial businesses, connect downtown with Elmhurst College and create more performing arts venues.

Some residents felt the downtown center needed a little more variety and suggested having more family-oriented restaurants and businesses and providing more office space to draw in more businesses to the area.

However, bringing more people into the area could make parking a problem – an issue many residents are already trying to deal with.

Some expressed getting in and out of the parking lots and decks and driving around the downtown area are nuisances because they cause traffic, and when severe weather is involved, navigating through downtown becomes even more difficult.

Others suggested providing more bike-friendly lanes, as well as constructing another alternative to cross the railroad tracks aside from the underpass, which is unusable during heavy rainfall.

Heroin’s deadly reign affects us all It’s easy to think of heroin addiction as something that happens to other people, other families. Especially if you and your children have made it through the teen years and early adulthood without coming under the thumb of addiction.

But even if no one in your immediate circle had even tried heroin, it still affects you in ways that are almost impossible to see. Maybe your favorite cashier at the grocery store just isn’t there one day, and you never know why. Maybe a local business you frequent shuts down out of the blue. Maybe a friend or a colleague becomes distant for no apparent reason, no longer hosts gatherings, no longer talks with pride about what the kids are doing.

Cook and DuPage counties have seen a decline in heroin-related deaths thanks to the use of Narcan to combat overdoses. From 46 deaths in 2013 to 33 last year, DuPage County is on track for about 27 this year. Cook County’s drop was less significant, from 275 in 2013 to 283 in 2014.

Regardless, if those declines are because of the success of Narcan, then it means the

These are just a few of the obvious ways heroin abuse continues to affect all of us.

With summer right around the corner, we’re gearing up at Elmhurst Public Library for our annual summer reading program.

The Kids’ Library will be busy as 5,000 Elmhurst children – about half of all kids in Elmhurst – participate in the program. High schoolers and adults are invited to join the summer reading program, too, which begins June 6. Registration continues until Aug. 15. At any given time this summer, the library will be hopping with crowds of people playing, learning, creating and logging their reading to earn prizes.

The summer reading program helps children avoid what experts call the “summer slide.” Studies show a noted decrease in reading skills occurs when students spend the summer without books. Many of our programs are designed to foster reading skills. Children entering kindergarten and first grade can register for Get Ready, Get Set, Read! Rising second- and third-graders can sign up for Book Buddies, and there are book discussion clubs for kids in second through eighth grade.

A few residents suggested constructing performing arts venues.

“There are no formal venues to celebrate the arts,” Clark Pavlik said.

He added there is a community of comedians, musicians and actors in Elmhurst who need a place to perform, and the basements of local churches and small theaters sometimes don’t suffice.

Clark, his younger brother, Ben, and his father, Michael, a performing arts teacher at York Community High School, said having these types of venues would help build that bridge with Elmhurst College and other performing arts organizations in the community.

Others said it would generate a chain effect, luring more people to

the businesses and restaurants in the area and perhaps even encouraging them to settle here.

The forum’s discussion also allowed room for residents to rediscover Elmhurst’s strengths, which they identified as the Park District, public library, museums, York Theatre and Elmhurst College.

Collectively, residents shared the sentiment of finding some way to link all of their strengths together and redesign a newly envisioned downtown.

Slone said the workshop was a great way to get the people of Elmhurst more involved in the planning process, since downtown is a crucial part of the town.

Moving forward, the Houseal Lavigne Associates team encourages residents to play a more active role by coming to more meetings or completing online surveys, as the workshop was just the first step.

Within the next few months, the team plans to continue gathering input from the community to create a more finalized report of residents’ insights.

Elmhurst mans goes from hip-hop to hot dogs

atugade@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – Forty-year-old Michael “Mikie” Savoia Jr. has been held captive by hip-hop for the past two decades, and Savoia has proof. On his right forearm, he has a portrait of legendary rapper Tupac Shakur, and on his shoulders, he has names of the friends he has lost throughout the years.

Savoia, who goes by the stage name “Mikie Da Poet,” recalled meeting hiphop at the same time he began to fall in love with basketball. Savoia, a 12-yearold at the time, had already lived in different parts of Chicago, and the streets – Cicero, Armitage, Taylor and Harlem – shaped the way he understood the meaning of home.

Savoia said basketball and hip-hop became a bridge for him, his friends and the community, and it taught him the most important rule of the game: to bring it.

When Savoia was 15, he and his family moved to Bensenville. He recalled visiting downtown Elmhurst frequently, and as an impressionable teen, he perceived Elmhurst as his “new Chicago” – a place for opportu-

Eager to showcase its Water Park and Splash Pad, located at 1100 W. Wood St., the Bensenville Park District has planned five hours of events, concluding with a showing of the movie “Frozen” on the grounds in the Water Park.

The Bensenville Park District’s new Splash Pad is a 2,527-square-foot spray park play area containing attractions that flow, mist, and propel water. This area complements the 12-18” deep children’s interactive water play area.

Older guests enjoy the Water Park’s 155-foot water slide and “plunge pool,” two additional slides, a diving board, and a 12-1/2-foot dive well. Zero-depth entry into the spacious pool area accommodates young swimmers, while designated areas for lap swimming provide multiple fitness opportunities.

For non-swimmers, the Water Park offers large shaded areas and a sun deck furnished with more than 100 chaise lounges and chairs. Large grassy areas for sunning overlook the Water Park. A full-service concession area features summertime favorites. Wet and dry sand play areas, a playground, and beach volleyball are available.

But there was just something missing in the music scene that led him to make the bold decision to walk away from the game, he said.

“I was just a product of my environment,” Savoia said, adding while he recognized his talent for wordplay and lyricism, he knew rapping was just a hobby.

His real passion remained in cooking – an act that brought his family closer together.

“I was that kid who sat in the kitchen cooking with my Italian grandmothers,” Savoia said, listing numerous homemade dishes that encompassed many memorable family meals. “It’s what I enjoy the most out of all things.”

The decision to open up Poet’s Beef ‘N Dogs, a small fast-food restaurant in Elmhurst that opened in early May, was an easy one to make – finally fulfilling the promise he made to himself years ago.

Savoia said the concept of Poet’s Beef ‘N Dogs mirrors the places he used to grab grub at growing up. The “old-school” restaurant serves classic hot dogs with fresh-cut french fries placed on top, hamburgers, gyros and wings.

He turned to his 62-year-old father, Michael Savoia Sr., and his 20-year-old “nephew” Joe Christiansen to work with him.

Mikie Savoia said because of his upbringing, he learned to cherish his friends and his family.

“You struggle together and you stick together,” he said, noting those valued relationships speak volumes to how he acts as a business owner and treats his customers.

That is something Christiansen has learned from Savoia, who also recruited his close friends Gary Baker, 20, and Edward Orozco and Wendy Marin, both 19, to work at Poet’s.

Christiansen said having his friends by his side generates a positive environment.

Savoia said opening his own restaurant in a town he has admired is more than an accomplishment, it is his dream turned into a reality.

“When I leave this earth, I know that there’s something here for him,” Michael Savoia Sr. said. “He has a little legacy to hold on to here.”

Property damage A case of criminal damage to property was reported at 12:35 p.m. May 21 after a chain used to secure a front gate was found cut and lying on the pavement of Trans Chicago Truck, 776 N. York St.

Scam A scam was reported at 2 p.m. May 21 after a man received a phone call in the 600 block of South Swain Avenue from someone claiming to be a Drug Enforcement Administration agent. The caller told the man his cousin was being held for possession of a large amount of narcotics, and in order for the charges to be dropped, he needed to pay $8,500.

Marijuana possession

Theft • A Cisco router valued at $1,800 and six Cisco IP phones valued at $2,400 were reported stolen at 1:45 p.m. May 21 after an independent contractor removed them from the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Business Operations Center, 855 N. Church Court.

Delinquency of minor contribution John Lamphere, 22, of the 500 block of East Butterfield Road, Elmhurst, was charged at 8:35 p.m. May 21 with contributing to the delinquency of a minor in the 100 block of North Avon Road.

Lamphere was with two minors and allegedly provided them with alcohol and cigarettes. They were cited with possession of alcohol by a minor and possession of tobacco by a minor.

Traffic violations • Paula Moreno-Preciado, 20, of the 2000 block of South Wolf Road, Hillside, was charged at 2:32 a.m. May 21 with driving while license suspended and no insurance at Route 83 and North Avenue.

• Milos Milivojevic, 33, of the 200 block of Lincoln Oaks Drive, Willow Springs, was charged at 12:36 p.m. May 21 with no valid driver’s license at Route 83 and Lake Street.

• Qualteria Freeman, 42, of the 10000 block of Devonshire Lane, Westchester, was charged at 12:21 p.m. May 18 with leaving the scene of an accident in the 1000 block of South York Road.

• Sheila Rogers, 58, of the 1500 block of North Sedgewick Street, Chicago, was charged at 11:20 p.m. May 25 with driving while license revoked, no insurance and improper lane use at Highview and North avenues.

Found property An unlocked men’s bicycle and women’s bicycle were found at 2:23 a.m. May 22 at the bicycle rack of the Elmhurst train station, 105 S. York St. They were placed into police evidence for safekeeping.

She was with Veronica Guma, 24, of the 2400 block of George Street, Franklin Park, who was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia.

• Cesar Merlos, 28, of the 6900 block of North Western Avenue, Chicago, was charged at 7:20 p.m. May 22 with unlawful possession of marijuana with intent to deliver and unlawful possession of marijuana in the 100 block of Grand Avenue.

Merlos, who reportedly advertised selling marijuana on a Craigslist post, allegedly intended to deliver 1 ounce of marijuana priced at $350 to Elmhurst.

• Kiante Gillespie, 19, of the 800 block of Lombard Street, Elmhurst, was charged at 11:16 a.m. May 23 with disobeying a stop sign and unlawful possession of marijuana at North End Avenue and Van Auken Street.

• Joseph Jackson, 20, of the 1600 block of South Prospect Street, Wheaton, and Shae Warnicke, 20, of the 700 block of Easy Court, Glendale Heights, were cited at 2:03 a.m. May 23 for unlawful possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia at North Avenue and York Road. Jackson also was cited for speeding.

THE PILL LINKED TO GLAUCOMA It is very important that anyone at high risk for glaucoma be screened for the disease.

This group includes African-Americans, those with a family history of glaucoma, those with a history of increased eye pressure or existing visual field defects, as well as users of oral contraceptives. Research indicates that women who have taken oral contraceptives for three or more years are twice as likely to suffer from glaucoma.

The study analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which included 3,406 female participants aged 40 years or older from across the United States. While it does not pinpoint a causative factor, it does suggest that all women at risk undergo glaucoma screening.

11 second-graders earn accolades in poster contest SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA ELMHURST – Out of 330 entries and eight participating Elmhurst grade schools, 11 second-graders were honored for their art in the annual Ruth Strand Poster Contest.

The contest, sponsored by the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation, is dedicated to Ruth Strand, the long-time director of the Elmhurst Public Library and a founding member of the Elmhurst Historical Museum. The contest invites second-grade students to draw a scene from Elmhurst history.

The top three winners of the contest were Jackson Bui of Jefferson Elementary School, Zhihanna Liu of Hawthorne Elementary School and Belinda Ling Ramos of Conrad Fischer Elementary School.

The following second-graders received honorable mentions: Alexa Klein of Hawthorne Elementary School, Grace Abraham of Jackson Elementary School, Brooklyn Nuss of Field Elementary School, Jack Lonergan of Emerson Elementary School, Adeline Harding of Jefferson Elementary School, Aileen Velasco of Conrad Fischer Elementary School, McKenzie Szczepanek of Lincoln Elementary School and Joe McDonough of Visitation Catholic School.

The poster contest winners were recognized at an Elmhurst Historical Museum reception May 20, the Memorial Day Parade May 25 and an Elmhurst City Council meeting June 1.

reen roof gardens are transforming urban areas, bringing nature to new heights. The trend is catching on with not only commercial builders but homeowners in suburban areas, too.

Green roof gardens are nothing new — basically the ancient hanging gardens of Babylon were green roof gardens – but now such gardens have expanded beyond rooftops with planters and al fresco dining areas, said Gaelle Berges, product and development manager for Vegetal i.D., a European green roof leader since 1992, which branched out to North America in 2010.

Red Stars Remain Unbeaten with 0-0 Draw in Seattle Seattle, Wash. – The NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars stayed undefeated in their first seven matches of the season courtesy of a hard-fought scoreless draw with home side and Shield holders Seattle Reign FC. Head Coach Rory Dames’ squad earned the valuable point behind disciplined team defending and a strong performance by netminder Michele Dalton, whose seven saves saw the 26-year-old earn her second shutout of the 2015 campaign.

Seattle controlled possession early on and created the first promising chance in the 13th minute. Reigning league MVP Kim Little sprinted down to the byline on the left side and set up Danielle Foxhoven, whose mishit effort from inside the box found fellow attacker Merritt Mathias. The Alabama native failed to make full contact on the ball, her shot attempt being comfortably stopped by Dalton.

Chicago’s Vanessa DiBernardo released a dangerous drive at the other end of the field in the 20th minute, a wicked deflection forcing goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer to leave her feet for a spectacular parry. Red Stars defender Michelle Lomnicki had her side’s best chance of the day on the ensuing DiBernardo corner from the right, as she headed the ball goalward with Kopmeyer out of the net, only to see it dramatically headed off the line by Reign FC’s Elli Reed.

The home side had a pair of attempts during the remainder of the opening period, forcing solid saves from Dalton, who did well to avoid giving up rebounds.

After the break, both teams’ promising attacking efforts were well defended, as the fans had to wait until the 65th minute for another close look. Red Stars midfielder Danielle Colaprico swung in a corner kick from the left and Lomnicki got her head on the ball once more, this time seeing her close-range effort bounce just wide of the left post.

During my next visit, I decided I wanted to put my red meat cravings on the backseat for the sake of vegetarian readers, and ordered the veggie burger topped with avocado and tomato.

Back Alley got points straight away for the clearly house-made patty instead of

the frozen black bean affair found in many places. It had a whole lot of mildly spicy complexity to it, but could have used more sear.

I decided to go with the classic onion rings as my side this go-round, and, predictably, they were battered perfectly. Each had a uniform

amount of tasty breading with a nice crunch and plenty of welcome onion flavor.

I knew I needed to sample one of the restaurant’s handspun shakes to truly tell the full story. The Nutella version was intensely chocolate and dangerously drinkable as opposed to milk shakes the

A lot of places do a decent burger, and a lot try to push the envelope of what a burger can be. Back Alley definitely does so with success, along with a friendly waitstaff quick to offer a suggestion, and a welcoming interior with rockand-roll appeal.

If you’re going to put your burger fate in the hands of anyone, the people at Back Alley should be near the top of the list.

LA GRANGE – Grilling season is here, but consider leaving the burger production to the pros at Back Alley Burger in La Grange.

The restaurant is the creation of veteran restaurateurs Mary and Christopher Spagnola of Western Springs, who first met at the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco. Their training is a big part of what sets Back Alley Burger apart, and their concept has expanded to a second location in Elmhurst.

The pair’s hard-rocking La Grange restaurant has a big but focused menu offering a number of different burgers featuring grass-fed and never frozen beef, plus sandwiches, chili, nitrate-free hot dogs, salads, shakes, beer and wine, all served alongside street art decor and classic rock tunes.

Inventive burger toppings and a theme alone do not a quality restaurant make, but, luckily, Back Alley Burger delivers.

Though my imagination was caught by the Most Insane-est Hottest Burger Ever-est, filled with such ingredients as habanero jam, fried jalapeños, Thai chili cream cheese and something called Trinidad scorpion sauce, I decided to go with the less threatening Make Shroom for Me Burger.

What came out was truly delicious. The patty itself was incredibly juicy without being greasy, and the pretzel bun it came on gave just enough structure to make sure the second half of the burger wasn’t soggy. Though it could have used a bit more of the namesake mushrooms, the grilled onions on top added an appreciated bite to the sandwich.

A surprise was the caliber of the sweet potato fries. So many restaurants make a tremendous burger, but serve a pile of over-salted greasy fries alongside it. These were some of the best I’ve ever had.

The thin fries had an amazing crispness to them that still had a mind-boggling amount of creamy sweet potato in the middle.

By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com CHARLESTON – Alex Teague had never run on the track at Eastern Illinois University during the state meet, missing out on his opportunity a year ago after getting sick at the wrong time.

But when he got his chance this year, the York senior made it count.

Competing in both the Class 3A 100-meter dash and the 200, Teague came through with a pair of all-state performances May 30 at Eastern Illinois University.

“I was very happy with how I performed,” Teague said, “and it was a great way to end my senior year.”

Teague was fourth in the 100 with a time of 10.67 seconds and finished fifth in the 200 in 21.61.

“I was very happy with my prelims time in the 100 [10.52],” he said. “I was not quite where I wanted to be in the 100 [finals], but I’ve never run two days in a row like this; and I still had a PR in the 200.”

Matt Plowman garnered all-state honors with a ninth-place showing in the 1,600 run, crossing the line in 4:17.50.

“It was a really fast race,” said Plowman, who will continue his running career at Michigan. “The state is full of great competition and it was cool to be a part of it.”

The 4x800 relay team of Charlie Kern, Max Denning, Nathan Dale and Plowman also finished fifth in 7:47.54.

“It’s really cool,” Dale said. “We didn’t qualify our 4x800 last year and we wanted to make a statement coming back, that last year might have just been an off year for us. Even though initially we had our sights set on winning, going from not being down here last year to getting fifth this year, that’s a great way to finish the season.”

The all-state performances wrapped up what turned out to be a very successful season for the defending state champs, who finished 15th in Class 3A

“We lost a lot of guys from last year’s team, but we rebounded pretty well this year,” Plowman said. “It’s been exciting to surpass people’s expectations.”

IC Catholic Jordan Rowell isn’t afraid to admit that, at times, he doesn’t mind losing because that shows the IC Catholic sophomore what he must improve on.

But if his performance at the Class 1A state meet May 30 is any indication, he isn’t very far away from the top of the mountain.

Rowell came close to a pair of state titles, settling for the runner-up position in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.04 seconds and a third-place showing in the 100 after crossing in 10.89.

And he did all that despite battling a hip/quad injury suffered in the prelims two days earlier.

“Finishing second and third, and being only a sophomore, that is fantastic,” Rowell said. “I’m on the top of the world. But at the same time, coming in second and third, it shows how much more I have to push myself to be first.”

He was a little disappointed after finishing the 400.

“I thought I was right there,” said Rowell, who closed the gap to champion Jacob Sholl during the final 50 meters. “I could have had him if there was another 15 meters. I felt I was running as fast as I can but it shows how much better I have to get.”

Rowell added a third state medal with his sixth-place showing in the 200 with a time of 22.60.

Timothy Christian After wrapping up his final race at the Class 1A state meet May 30, Andy Margason said he just wanted some ice cream and a dip in the pool.

And that was seemingly well-deserved after the Trojans’ junior notched all-state honors.

Margason finished in sixth place in the 110-meter hurdles after posting a time of 15.34 seconds.

“It was a great atmosphere, and a great way to end the season,” Margason said. “Hurdles are a lot of fun, they are what I love to do and that’s who I am.

“I was the only one down here from my school so I was alone most of the time but it was nice to meet the other guys and they all just want to compete.”

He also competed in the prelims of the 300 hurdles.

“I was very happy with how I performed and it was a great way to end my senior year.”

AT boys volleyball books state berth

The Blazers knocked off St. Patrick 26-24, 25-17 in a sectional final June 2.

The win came on the home court of the Shamrocks, a team that defeated AT during the regular season, albeit without setter Joey Nasti.

Since a relatively slow start, the Blazers have rattled off 19 wins in their past 20 matches. AT had to deal with Nasti being out for the first part of the season and middle hitter Kannon Nelms missing some time as in the middle part of the schedule. Having a more steady, consistent lineup has led to AT’s success.

“I think it’s just the continuity of having every back since then,” AT coach Chad Grant said. “Every match since we’ve had our starting lineup together.”

AT (33-6) takes on Hinsdale Central

(25-12) in the 6 p.m. state quarterfinal June 5 at Hoffman Estates. Two of the premier players in the state will be on opposite sides of the net in AT senior outside hitter Alex Dickmann, who had 16 kills in the sectional final, and Central setter Kiam Peterson.

“Their setter is a phenomenal player so we really have to be disciplined defensively and in blocking because he’s going to be a challenge for us,” Grant said. “We’re not going to be complacent there. We want to win some matches.”

any ICCP team did, but we wanted to go downstate. I thought this team was good enough to do that. We just fell a little short, but I’m proud of them.”

Conenna, who pitched in the super and went 1 for 3 with a walk at the plate, is headed to pitch at Northern Illinois next year. Curran, IC’s shortstop and leadoff hitter, broke the school’s stolen base record will play at Dominican University. Conenna, Curran and Montoya were four-year varsity players and won 94 games in four seasons.

“I’m going to miss those three kids immensely, and Jackie Pochop came back this year to be one of my pinch runners and did a great job,” Reaber said. “I’ll miss all four.”

Up next is an OPRF team that edged the Dukes for the West Suburban Silver title. York split with the Huskies during the regular season, winning 7-3 on May 4 and losing 11-0 on May 20.

The teams are the top two seeds in the Niles West sectional.

“They beat us for conference so we have that,” Solem said. “We really just want to go and prove to everybody that we can beat them because we can.

We’re just excited to kick some butt.”

ROSEMONT – There was the talent, the experience and the opportunity to get to state.

However, IC Catholic softball came up just short in its quest for its first state finals bid. The Knights lost 5-3 against Bishop McNamara in a supersectional June 1 at Chicago Bandits Stadium.

The Irish took the lead with two runs in the first inning and the Knights responded with one in the bottom half on an Anjella Farmer RBI single. That 2-1 score held until the Knights conceded three runs in the top of the seventh. Jessica Conenna had a two-RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to spark an IC rally in the final frame, but the Irish survived.

“We had a shot into that last inning,” IC coach Frank Reaber said.

“We got the base hit to score two by Jess and we had a shot. We had a runner on and our four hitter that could put it out of the ballpark at any time in Farmer. I’ll take it. They’re a very good team with a lot of power, but I think we were right there with them. I think it was an evenly matched game.”

The teary eyes that follow a playoff loss didn’t mar a memorable season for the Knights. IC finished with a 27-6 record and won the first sectional title since the 2003 season.

Seniors Conenna, Gabby Curran, Lindsey Montoya and Jackie Pochop leave a big legacy behind after all the recent success for the team. IC won back-to-back regional titles and this spring matched the program’s single-season win mark.

“They won [a sectional] in 02-03, but back then the supers were 16 teams so it was a different thing,” Reaber said. “We went further than

ELMHURST – Six players on York’s softball team this spring were a part of the 2013 squad that went to state and they want to go back.

The Dukes are headed for a sectional final against Oak Park-River Forest at 11 a.m. June 6, meaning a return trip to East Peoria is two wins away.

“I think to know what you’re playing for and to know how awesome going to state is and how good it feels, it just pushes you that much harder to keep winning to experience that again,” junior Abby Solem said. “It was just this awesome weekend [at state] and I would love to go back. I think that energy that all the returners have is pushing everyone to keep it up.”

Solem and fellow junior Gabby Magnifico were a part of that state team along with seniors Isabella Jaeger, Sarah Milkowski, Brooke Bandy and Audrey Kosman.

Jaeger said having that experience helps keep them calm in pressure moments in big games.

“I think we’re more comfortable now,” Jaeger said. “We’re actually not even that nervous. This is the exciting time of the year. This is the best part of the year.”
