ELMHURST – The Elmhurst Academy of Early Learning has taken a new approach to harnessing a healthy lifestyle by challenging its faculty, students and their families to take part in Gimme Five, a challenge from First Lady Michelle Obama’s fitness campaign, “Let’s Move.”

Early childhood teachers Dana Naffziger and Leslie Mueller decided to accept the challenge and create a summer curriculum that encouraged members of their school community to participate. The two also decided to include just one more bit – how can students demonstrate good character?

Elmhurst Academy’s philosophy centers on a project-based method to develop and enhance physical, social and emotional skills, Naffziger said.

She added the philosophy embodies communication as a crucial construct to building balanced relationships with oneself, one’s peers and one’s family, and that’s what they hope to accomplish with the Gimme Five challenge.

Naffziger explained their summer school program runs from June to August, and she and Mueller devised each month to concentrate on individual, partner and team tasks.

The two said these include various types of activities that develop handeye coordination and balance through catching or kicking a ball to one another, as well as learning how to work together to accomplish a goal.

A large aspect of this project is that the students are in charge of coming up with challenges for their peers, teachers and parents, Naffziger and Mueller said.

This allows them not only to use their critical thinking skills but also to take ownership in receiving the challenges and performing them, Naffziger said.

For the week of June 30, Michelle Pike and her infant class challenged Mueller and her preschool-aged class to give high-fives to five different friends, which primarily encompasses

Elmhurst bar gets quite the surprise

ELMHURST – Steve Riley was in for the surprise of a lifetime when he received a text from his brother that Patrick Kane and the Stanley Cup were on their way June 27 to their family-owned restaurant and bar, Riley’s Gathering Place, on York Street.

“I thought my brother was just messing with me,” Riley said, adding he decided to show up just to make sure.

When Riley entered the bar that night, there were about 30 people there, but as soon as Kane and his crew of friends arrived in a limo bus, the crowd nearly tripled, he said.

Kane, his friends and the Stanley Cup had just come from a Jimmy Buffett concert in Tinley Park. The Blackhawks star sported appropriate Buffett attire, complete with a parrot-head hat and a Hawaiian shirt, Riley said.

He said one member of Kane’s group brought the cup inside the bar, placed it on a table and let Blackhawks fans

Before Kane was swallowed by an enormous crowd of friends and fans, Riley was able to snag a photo with him. He and his wife, Debbie, also were able to get a photo with the cup, he said.

Another surprise Kane had in store for fans that night was his karaoke ren-

dition of Tom Petty’s song “Free Fallin.’”

“It was pretty neat,” Riley said.

Riley said Riley’s Gathering Place is a “big Blackhawks bar,” and the family bought the bar from former Blackhawks player Grant Mulvey. Throughout the years, players such as Bobby Hull and Jeremy Roenick have made trips to the 26-year-old neighborhood establishment, Riley said.

“It’s still so surreal,” he said.

After Kane’s visit, visitors came the next day and bombarded Riley with questions. It’s a story he wants to share.

“It’s amazing how word gets out,” Riley said.

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA ELMHURST – Construction of the Hahn Street redevelopment project began at the end of June.

The property is now fenced, and existing buildings have been demolished, according to a city news release.

Areas that are affected during construction include west of York Street, east of Addison Avenue and north and south of Hahn Street.

In April, the city approved the redevelopment agreement with Morningside Hahn LLC of Chicago for the construction of the Hahn Street/North

District development in downtown Elmhurst.

The six-story development, which will be named Elmhurst 255, consists of 192 luxury apartment units, 12,000 square feet of retail space, 150 public parking spaces, a civic plaza and stormwater detention. Construction is expected to be completed in 2017.

The city of Elmhurst is investing money in the project. It is putting in about $3.5 million through city incentives and a reimbursement for environmental remediation, nearly $19 million in equity and $35 million for a construction loan.

While the new playground will include various play structures with needed physical adjustments, such as a zip line and teeter-totters with contoured seats and appropriate handles, “cozy” shaded areas are designed for children with sensory issues as a place for them to retreat.

The park district already has partnered with local organizations Special Kids Day, People for Elmhurst Parks Foundation and the Elmhurst Kiwanis Club for fundraising support.

Special Kids Day Chairman Rich Rosenberg said the new playground looks past just fulfilling ADA requirements and becomes a place for children with and without special needs to “coexist, cointegrate and mingle” together.

The total cost of the project is $550,000. Rogers said the park district has set aside $300,000 from taxes and revenue for the construction of a typical playground, and the remaining $250,000 is expected to come from donations from local organizations, individual donors and grant funding.

So far, the park district has raised about $55,000 and has a long way to go, Wade said.

Elmhurst resident celebrates Camp I Am Me’s 25th anniversary

ELMHURST – Jackie Bafaro was 8 years old when she suffered from third-degree burns on half of her face, her stomach and her chest from an incident that involved scalding hot water.

Bafaro said after spending about three months in an induced coma and recuperating at Loyola University Medical Center, she met staff members who told her about Camp I Am Me, a summer camp in Ingleside for children and teenagers with burn injuries.

For the past 13 years, Bafaro, now 21 and a newly appointed camp counselor, has spent a week of her summer at the camp, learning and teaching others this valuable lesson: “It’s OK to be different. Our scars don’t define us.”

That’s the message Camp I Am Me was built on 25 years ago, and Elmhurst resident Terry Pluta, a retired Northlake firefighter, knew that would be its driving force.

The camp celebrated its 25th anniversary and honored staff members such as Pluta with its social media campaign, 25+ Faces for 25 Years.

The long-time camp volunteer took part in starting the summer camp in 1991. At the time, the only place that was like Camp I Am Me was in Colorado, which is miles away from the victims’ Illinois-based homes, he explained.

Collaborating with the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance, an organization based in Mount Prospect, Pluta and others began to work together to provide a space for children and teenagers to just be themselves as they entered through different personal stages of recovery, acceptance and healing. Pluta recalled the camp started out with about 40 children and just enough staff members and counselors.

At the time, the camp had dirt roads and cabins without air conditioning. With the help of volunteers and

ELMHURST – The purpose of a playground is quite simple: It’s a place where kids can just be kids.

It’s a place where they can gather, play, learn how to interact with one another and, most important, build friendships.

For all children, inclusivity is important in crafting those relationships with each other, and that’s what the Elmhurst Park District hopes to achieve with the concept of the Playground for Everyone, a renovation of the Butterfield Park Playground expected to be completed in fall 2016.

Ginger Wade, marketing and communications director of the Elmhurst Park District, explained the park district has an obligation to redevelop parks every 18 years, and in 2016, the Butterfield Park Playground is next in line.

The district chose to convert this particular park into a “playground for everyone” because it is spacious, has an existing parking lot and restrooms, and is near accessible major streets in York Street and Butterfield Road, Wade said.

It won’t look a lot different from a typical playground, but it does provide different opportunities of play for everyone, said Jim Rogers, Elmhurst Park District executive director.

Rogers explained parks in the Elmhurst community have some features that accommodate children with special needs such as a slide or a ramp that is large enough for a child using a wheelchair to use, but that doesn’t leave enough room for that child’s friend to run alongside him or her.

Hitting the ground running with big plans for District 205

Greetings! I am not sure that it has sunk in yet. I have been asked to serve as the next superintendent of Elmhurst District 205!

Since I left college coaching and returned to EC-12 education in 1998, I have consciously pursued a path to become a public school superintendent. Since my grandmother lived in a far southwest suburb of Chicago, which was mostly a cornfield COMMUNITY then, I told everybody I knew VOICE that I was going to live in David Chicago someday.

Moyer As coincidence would have it, my first position upon returning to public education I have to say thank you was in a far northwest suburb. for the opportunity to Until recently, my family stationed ourselves there for a serve. With a community good period of time, and, now, I have a dream job – a oncethat supports its public in-a-lifetime opportunity – I schools, and a Board have been invited to come to Elmhurst. Grandma, I made it! of Education and So, what’s next? Well, in team of teachers and large part, you will all tell me.

We will have dialogue about administrators that share what it means to raise the bar and close the achievement in a common vision of gap for all students. We will come to consensus on a plan of excellence, the rest will attack for how to continue to take care of itself. make District 205 schools a beacon of educational excellence.

And, if all goes according to plan, we will become a model district nationally, sharing our successes for all to see and emulate.

If we are truly committed to this ideal, it will not necessarily be easy in this knowledge-driven, rapidly changing, global world. But, boy, will it ever be worth it!

First things first. I have to say thank you for the opportunity to serve. With a community that supports its public schools and a board of education and team of teachers and administrators that share in a common vision of excellence, the rest will take care of itself. As Bob Dylan sings in “When I Paint My Masterpiece,” “Someday everything is gonna be smooth like a rhapsody, when I paint my masterpiece.”

Illinois residents are pawns in a giant state chess game The mighty struggle underway over the Illinois state budget is eerily similar to the game of chess. The comparison is both apt and sad.

The opponents are the entrenched Democrats, led by House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton, versus first-year Gov. Bruce Rauner and the minority Republicans. They represent the kings, queens, knights, bishops and rooks on the chess board.

And the 12.8 million other Illinoisans?

Well, if you’ve ever felt like a pawn in the great budgetary battle, join the club.

In chess, pawns are manipulated to advance the interests of the major pieces.

Pawns don’t matter much in the grand scheme of things. They are routinely imperiled and sacrificed to benefit the more powerful chess pieces.

Average Illinoisans have spoken up about how proposed budget cuts would negatively affect them. Some have done so on their own; others have been trotted out by politicians.

Either way, their stories are compelling.

Senior citizens, the poor, those with physical and mental disabilities and others who rely on state funding are imperiled. The uncertainty is difficult to bear.

In chess, pawns do have one golden opportunity to triumph. If a pawn can advance to the end of the board, it wins a powerful promotion and gains great influence. The opposing player tries to stop that from happening at all costs.

In Illinois’ budgetary endgame, Illinoisans must put politicians in check and exert their combined influence to demand that fiscal prudence and the best interests of the people be part of the new budget.

For politicians who just don’t get it, the public can deal with them at next election.

In the last few years, Elmhurst has made the news as one of the worst flooded areas every time we get extensive rain. The paper is filled with articles about how the city will resolve these issues on the south side of town.

There is talk of relief ... , home buyout programs and more town meetings. My question is, what will be done for the homes north of [Interstate] 290? Lake Street and Emroy become a parking lot as the side streets become swimming pools. Our homes flood as much, if not more, as other areas, and yet there is no plan in place that I have read about to alleviate the problem on the north side of town.

This year, the camp hosted 64 children and teenagers and had about 70 full-time and part-time counselors. Over the years, the number of attendees has fluctuated, but camp leaders have made sure to develop staff that can accommodate all of their needs, Pluta said.

Camp I Am Me volunteer to the camp’s overall success, he said. Over the years, teachers, firefighters, police officers and medical personnel across Illinois have volunteered and offered different services in fulfilling this summer experience for the campers.

Dotty Abhe, an administrator and school teacher in Northlake, has worked alongside Pluta for more than 25 years. Even before their volunteer work together at the camp, Abhe and Pluta teamed up and revamped curriculum for helping teachers and students learn about fire safety.

The two said while the camp helps children move forward and see past their own scars, having platforms to raise safety awareness is crucial to prevention.

“We don’t know the fires we prevent,” Pluta said. “We only know the ones we don’t.”

Randy Ahlgrim, a retired firefighter and paramedic in Addison, also has worked alongside Pluta at the camp since its inception.

Both Pluta and Ahlgrim said they remember how they first felt when interacting with the children and the

teenagers at the camp.

“Do I hug them? Shake their hand?” Pluta said.

Pluta and Ahlgrim explained as firefighters they were only concerned about two things: getting victims to safety and helping them receive proper medical attention immediately.

As volunteers at the camp, the two were able to play an active role in the campers’ lives, build that friendship and be a part of their support system.

“We want to help them get their self-esteem back and know that they are never alone,” Pluta said.

Born: Sept. 23, 1911; in Quincy, MI Died: June 28, 2015; in Lisle, IL

Martin D. Bates, age 103, passed away at Westbury Care Center, Brookdale of Lisle, on Sunday, June 28, 2015. A former resident of Glen Ellyn for 47 years, he had lived independently at Brookdale Lisle (formerly, The Devonshire) since 1999.

Martin was born on September 23, 1911, at his maternal grandparents' farm home near Quincy, Michigan. After graduating from Quincy High School, he attended Michigan State College (now, University) in East Lansing, Michigan, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and completed the Army ROTC program to become a commissioned officer (2nd Lieutenant) in the Army Reserve.

After graduation in 1936, he began his occupational career and married Barbara R. Hutchison, whom he had met while attending MSC; she was from Grand Rapids, Michigan. He had to put his civilian career on hold when he was called to Active Duty in the Spring of 1941.

During World War II, he served as an antiaircraft artillery officer and participated in the Normandy invasion, landing at Omaha Beach on D-Day. At the end of the war, he stayed in the Army Reserve and retired at the rank of Colonel in 1971.

Martin had a successful civilian career as a sales engineer of industrial rubber products. During his career, he worked for several companies; most notably, Thermoid Rubber Products Company and Sparks Belting Company. He retired as a sales representative from Sparks at the age of 75.

Red Stars Earn Convincing 3-0 Win Away over Sky Blue FC

Several players with standout performances as Chicago remains atop NWSL table Piscataway, N.J. – The Chicago Red Stars defended their spot at the top of the NWSL table with a commanding 3-0 away win over Sky Blue FC on Sunday night. Vanessa DiBernardo, Jen Hoy and Alyssa Mautz all scored for Chicago, with Hoy adding an assist on Mautz’ second-half tally. The match also featured a pair of assists by 22-year-old Huerta and outstanding play by defender Abby Erceg, who made her return to the Red Stars lineup after captaining New Zealand in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Chicago goalkeeper Michele Dalton earned her third clean sheet of the season behind an all-around solid performance.

The Red Stars seized the lead in just the sixth minute of play. Huerta sprinted into the box on the left and battled to maintain possession before smartly centering to DiBernardo, who coolly sidestepped goalkeeper Brittany Cameron for the opening strike. Sky Blue FC had an opportunity to level the score a mere four minutes later, but Shawna Gordon’s left-footed shot from the top of the area went just over the frame.

After three brilliant defensive plays in a row by Chicago’s Erceg, the 25-year-old center back was in the right spot again to block a 21st-minute cross from the right by Sky Blue FC’s Meg Morris. However, the interception fell right to Katie Freels, who nearly put away the opportunity with a left-footed attempt that rattled the crossbar.

The home side had another chance to tie the match at the half-hour mark, as Taylor Lytle was in on goal off a beautiful through ball from deep inside her own half, only to have Red Stars outside back Arin Gilliland catch up and force her wide.

While the rookie’s hustle allowed Erceg and Samantha Johnson to recover, Lytle still managed to get a shot off, firing across goal and just wide of the far post from the left side of the area.

In the 34th minute, Chicago made their opponents pay dearly for the missed opportunities with a beautiful combination play doubling the lead for Head Coach Rory Dames’ side. Rachel Quon took full advantage of a breakaway by releasing Huerta down the center, and the rookie sensation unselfishly slid the ball through to Hoy for a simple tap-in from the mouth of the goal.

Sky Blue FC started off the second half on the right foot, as Freels put Danish international Nadia Nadim through on goal, but Red Stars keeper Michele Dalton left her feet for an exceptional block on the powerful driven effort. That set the stage for Chicago to increase their lead just after the hour mark. Danielle Colaprico’s long ball into the attack found Hoy entering the box with time on her hands, picking out Mautz for a right-footed shot that took a slight deflection and trickled inside the left upright.

Idaho native Huerta continued to wreak havoc in the closing stages of the match, dribbling past two defenders on the left side of the box and firing from close range, only for Cameron to produce a point-blank reaction save. The rebound fell into the path of Rachel Quon, whose low attempt on goal forced another diving save from the Sky Blue FC goalkeeper.

Lytle had a chance to pull one back for the hosts, her strong shot from the top of the penalty area whistling just over the bar. Shorty after that, her teammate Nadia Nadim nearly scored what would have been a certain candidate for Goal of the Year.

On a stoppage-time corner kick from the right, the striker tracked back to meet the ball near the edge of the box and smashed it off the crossbar by way of a spectacular bicycle kick. It would be the final opportunity of the night, as Chicago held on for its fifth victory of 2015.

The NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars look to make it consecutive wins when they travel to take on Houston Dash on July 12. The team’s next home game is a July 18 meeting with Boston Breakers at Benedictine University in Lisle.

Baba Karam’s specialty is tasty kabobs

VILLA PARK – A knock on some eateries is that they offer so many menu items, the cooking staff can never really master any of them. It’s precisely the opposite at Baba Karam.

With a focus on Middle Eastern fare, the restaurant in Villa Park keeps the menu simple, and, in the process, has clearly perfected its craft.

I stopped by Baba Karam on a recent evening with a dining companion. Hungry for some protein, I was hankering for something with beef or chicken.

But first, to whet our appetite, we started with a hummus appetizer. The smooth, tasty dip, based on chickpeas and tahini sauce, was filled with flavor, and made the accompanying pita bread disappear quickly. Our server asked if we needed more pita, but it turned out that the portions matched up perfectly.

For our entrees, we both zeroed in on the main section of the menu: the kabobs.

Chicken, ground beef, lamb shank and a few different preparations of filet mignon were offered.

I went for the one labeled “barg,” described as thinly sliced filet mignon marinated in saffron and spice. My companion opted for the boneless chicken, similarly marinated in saffron. We both ordered the dill rice; the other sides available were white rice and shirazi salad. The latter features cucumber, tomato and onion in a dressing of olive oil, black pepper, lime juice and mint.

I definitely had my hankering for some meat fulfilled, and then some. The filet mignon was as delicious and tender as I expected, and I probably wolfed it down quicker than is strictly acceptable for a nice restaurant.

Fortunately for me, my dining companion loved her chicken kabob but couldn’t finish the serving, so I got to sample a sizable portion of that entree, too. As terrific as the barg kabob was, I think the chicken

might have been even better, really capturing the flavor of the saffron and bursting with juices.

Spoolstra’s make badminton doubles final

The badminton doubles team of Emily Spoolstra and Hannah Spoolstra made the state final. The senior sisters lost to Julie Jambrone and Katelyn Sommers of Buffalo Grove 21-10, 21-11.

The Spoolstras didn’t qualify for the state tournament until their junior years, but once they got there they made a big impression. In 2014 they won five consolation matches to place in the top eight before the finals run this spring as seniors.

Boys track wins four state medals

The defending state champ York boys track and field team wasn’t expected to defend its title, but the Dukes still had a number of standout performances at the Class 3A state meet.

Alex Teague took home two medals, placing fourth in the 100-meter dash and fifth in the 200. Matt Plowman capped off his prolific distance career with a ninth-place medal in the 1,600.

Bode named Senior Gymnast of the Year

Sam Bode just missed out on winning a state medal, but did come away with a prestigious award. Bode was named Senior Gymnast of the Year by the Illinois High School Gymnastics Coaches Association. He was the first York gymnast to be honored since Keith Scorza in 1988.

Bode reached the individual finals for the third straight year, placing sixth on horizontal bar and ninth on pommel horse while qualifying for state in the other four events. He tied for 13th in the all-around.

It’s such an honor to be voted on by all of the coaches in the state. It really meant a lot. I thought it said a lot about my character, about my personality,” Bode said.

State meet showings highlight spring for AT, IC, TC

been in high school for two years, but already the IC Catholic standout has proven to be an elite athlete. This spring he added three state track medals to his growing list of accomplishments. The standout running back and varsity basketball player took second in the 400-meter dash, third in the 100 and sixth in the 200 in the Class 1A meet to medal in all three events. Rowell earned three medals as a freshman, including one in a relay.

Representing the other private school in Elmhurst, Timothy Christian junior Andy Margason took sixth in the 110-meter hurdles to also win a medal at state.

AT volleyball program wins first state trophy in school history

Entering the season the Addison Trail boys volleyball team had high expectations.

The Blazers had the talent to compete with the best in the state, but it took a while for the team to hit top gear. In a stretch that started April 30, AT won 20 of 21 matches reaching all the way to the state semifinal. Once there, the Blazers ran into the Glenbard West buzz saw, but rebounded to take third place in the program’s first appearance at state.

Senior Alex Dickmann had arguably the best season in the state with 483 kills.

Seniors Jonathan Valentini, Joey Nasti, Zack Vaca and Jack Vrchota were also a big part of the team’s success.

Quotable: “This is something we dreamed of accomplishing since we came into high school. It’s making school history over and over again,” Valentini said.

With talented seniors Jessica Conenna and Gabby Curran leading the way, IC Catholic softball had a memorable season. The Knights won a sectional for just the second time in school history and advanced deeper in the playoffs than any other IC softball squad.

sschmid@shawmedia.com LEMONT – The past year has been a whirlwind for Scott Darling after the Lemont native signed with the Chicago Blackhawks on July 1, 2014.

Having made a variety of stops on the minor league circuit, the 26-year old got his first call-up to the NHL on Oct. 26 and was the winning goalie in a 2-1 victory against the Ottawa Senators.

Darling went on to play in 14 regular season games before seeing action in five postseason contests in the opening round against Nashville, where he notched three wins. His performance helped the Blackhawks advance to the second round and ultimately capture their third Stanley Cup in the past six seasons.

In the process, the 6-foot-6 goalie became the first Chicago-area born player to have his name etched on the cup as a member of the Blackhawks.

On June 29, Darling brought the cup to his former hometown and put it on display at the Lemont Park District. Staff writer Scott Schmid was part of a press conference at which Darling spoke about the experience in Lemont and what it has been like to be a part of a Stanley Cup champion.

What has the last couple of weeks been like and has it sunk in that you are a Stanley Cup Champion?

Darling: It’s been crazy since we’ve won. We’ve done a lot of great stuff, like

Darling: This is where I spent a lot of my life, these are the streets where I use to ride my bike. To see how excited the people are, it means a lot. I never forgot where I came from. I call this home, I always have my whole life. I played Little League here, I played for the Lemont Indians. I was [just like] those kids out there, and to see them all here, it’s exciting.

I’ve had my opportunity with the cup last week with the team. This is a great opportunity to share it with everyone else.

Then to get the opportunity with Chicago and to have a role in the playoffs and winning the cup, it’s been unbelievable.

What is your mindset heading into next season?

Darling: I’m hungry as ever. I want to stay here, I want to be here for a long time. I’ll take a couple of weeks off and then a couple of weeks later, the season will start. I’m excited to get to camp and I still have to earn my spot for next year.
