Message from the Mayor reetings, Batavia ended 2023 with an action-packed share of new projects and business coming to our town. Among those projects are the new 163 single family homes being built at Winding Creek subdivision on McKee Street at Deerpath Road. On Batavia’s southeast side, the newly built Prairie Commons subdivision of 242 townhomes are quickly taking on occupancy. Adding to this housing boom in 2023 were the finishing touches to the highly acclaimed Windmill Landings Senior Living complex on Fabyan Parkway that offers around 140 living units. Added all together, Batavia has just experienced the addition of over 540 new living units. Moving our attention to newly opened retail units in both downtown and along the Randall Road corridor, there appears to be new retailers opening their doors in every section of town. The 18-acre vacant parcel directly in front of Prairie Commons, on the east side of south Kirk Road between Wind Energy Pass and Bentz Way is generating a lot of interest, and we expect a variety of new retailers to soon be calling Batavia home at this location. In another aspect of Batavia business development, I would call your attention to the new location of Hearth & Hammer at the southeast corner of First and Water streets. This is a very large business expansion within our downtown produces a highly acclaimed inventory of handcrafted candles to the delight of store visitors. Around100 years ago, this was the site of one of the main production lines of the U.S. Wind Engine and Pump Co. plant that produced thousands of windmills that were shipped around the world. I find it interesting that a building a century ago which produced windmills to power homes and businesses now is utilized to produce candles to brighten up homes and create warmth. Thus, Batavia has kept itself on the mainstage of the good points of world life, where our contributions offer a message of warmth and security which should bring our world back together in a variety of ways in the days ahead. May all in Batavia share a blessed new year!

NEW YEAR, NEW FITNESS GOALS

Q and A with Kathy Freedlund, Batavia Park District Fitness Supervisor

A

re you looking to increase your activity, exercise more and set fitness goals in 2024? Here are some tips to ensure you start strong and stick with them all year long. What is the best way to set achievable goals? Set realistic goals. I think it’s wise to start with baby steps. Think about starting out by adding one new class or one activity to your weekly schedule and build up from there. Start slowly and listen to your body. How do you make your new exercise habit stick in January and beyond? Sign up with a friend and make each other accountable. View exercise as maintenance your body needs. We all need to keep moving and take care of the body as a whole. I truly believe that exercise is the fountain of youth! What tips do you recommend for setting weekly activity goals? I recommend being active daily. Work toward 150 minutes a week. That's 30 minutes, five days a week. You can break that movement up into three 10-minute increments. Almost anyone can carve out 10 minutes three times a day, out of a 24-hour day for better health. It's important for bone and muscle health to do some resistance training twice a week, but not two days in a row. What is your weekly exercise routine? I walk 30 minutes a day, tone with

weights two times a week and practice yoga for strength, balance and mindfulness. Which park district classes do you recommend for those setting exercise goals? Almost anyone can participate in most of our classes because our instructors are experienced in offering modifications and all stress the importance of doing the best you can do for you, for example, doing fewer reps using lighter weights. We have classes specifically for beginners and active older adults called B-Fit and Cardio Mix. With so many women with osteoporosis and osteopenia, we offer a class called Yoga for Bone Health. Oftentimes women are given a diagnosis of osteoporosis with no instruction on how to safely move through daily activities. We teach that in this class. Our chair yoga class has been running for about 12 years. We have people well into their 90s working on strength and balance. For exercise pros, I recommend the TRX classes. They are so good for strength and core building. What are the key factors in continuing exercise and not getting discouraged? Do the modifications the instructor offers and don't be too hard on yourself. Put one foot in front of the other and stay active, even if it's with baby steps.

Kathy Freedlund has worked for Batavia Park District for 36 years. Her longevity is due to her desire to help people get fit and stay fit. “It’s so rewarding to have the job of HOPE: Helping other people exercise,” she said.

Think of your future self. Do you want to feel great and move with ease? Do you want to be able to take that long walk or hike? Would you like to be able to get in and out of a chair easily or even better, be able to get up and down off the floor? All these goals can improve once a person commits to making movement a part of their daily activity.

Kim's TIPS & TRICKS

Don't forget that your house plants need light and humidity. Give them a quarter turn every week. Also, clean the trays out frequently to prevent bacteria from growing in the water that the trays collect.

Kim Hansen, Director of Parks

Christmas trees can be used for more than holiday decor. Instead of throwing your tree out on the curb, place it upright and out of the wind to provide shelter for birds. The trees provide a safe place for birds to eat. The Batavian n

Lottery Registration Now Open Families with children who will be turning 3 and 4 years old by Sept. 1, 2024, and who currently reside in the boundaries of Batavia Public School District 101 are eligible to participate in a lottery system for open spots at the BPS101 Preschool at the Early Childhood Center in the 2024-25 school year. The academic and social-emotional curriculum is aligned with the district’s K-5 curriculum and Illinois Early Learning and Development Standards. BPS101 Preschool teachers hold general and special education certificates and have earned the English as a Second Language (ESL) Endorsement. Students must be pottytrained by the first day of class.

PRESCHOOL OPEN HOUSE

Fleetwood Mask

Fancy Nancy: The Musical

In 2012, Fleetwood Mask was formed to honor the legacy of Fleetwood Mac. Upon meeting with Mick Fleetwood in Maui several years ago, Fleetwood Mask humbly and proudly carries the auspicious gift of having Mick Fleetwood’s only endorsement in America. Fleetwood Mask brings audiences the very best of Fleetwood Mac’s 50-year history with a focus on the 1975 forward five-piece version of their lineup that catapulted them to super stardom. Fleetwood Mask has played nationally for a decade to music lovers from all corners of the US and each group member provides their character’s select equipment, persona, and performance bringing audiences a truly authentic Fleetwood Mac experience.

Fancy Nancy and her friends, Bree, Rhonda, Wanda and Lionel are going to be performing in their very first show, “Deep Sea Dances.” Nancy is positive, that’s fancy for 100 percent sure, that she and Bree will be picked to be mermaids. When another girl wins the coveted role of the mermaid, Nancy is stuck playing a dreary, dull tree. Can Nancy bring fancy flair to her role, even though it isn’t the one she wanted? Based on the popular children’s book series by Jane O’Connor and illustrated by Robin Preiss Glasser.

CLASSIC ADVENTURE MEETS

VIRTUAL REALITY in 2024 One Book, One Batavia selection

W

e root for underdogs.

The hardscrabble existence-turnedsuccess story. The pullyourself-up-by-your-bootstraps-andbecome-a-success story. The plucky underdog who could make it big, if only. We love those happy endings. And this year’s One Book, One Batavia selection goes big on rooting for the underdog in a science fiction novel that blends 1980s pop culture, alternate reality and video gaming with humor, romance and sarcasm. “Ready Player One” by Ernest Cline is set in 2044 when a teenage gamer, named Wade Watts, lives in this dystopian, not-so-distant future. Frankly, Watts’ poverty-stricken life is grim and the world is pretty bleak. But there is an OASIS. OASIS is this virtual reality world that’s like an online utopian paradise where people can plug in to go to school, make money and play. And Watts is one of millions who dream of one day finding three keys — rumored to have been hidden

The Library will be closed: • Monday, Jan. 1, for the New Year’s Day holiday • Friday, Feb. 16, the Library will close for half the day for Staff Development Day, opening at 1:30 p.m.

18 n January/February 2024

inside OASIS — left behind by the virtual reality world’s now-deceased creator, James Halliday. Halliday was the richest man who ever lived, and whoever finds those keys will inherit his vast riches. But Halliday, he didn’t make it easy. There are very real dangers lurking in this virtual realm, and in order for Watts to survive, he’s got to win. If you experienced the 1980s, you will understand the pop culture references. If you’re not into science fiction, this book still will intrigue you. Because at its heart, it’s about a young man who is a very relatable character going on a dangerous quest. Readers feel like he has a real chance of winning.

Actor Wil Wheaton reads the audiobook version, which in itself is worth a listen because his narration is incredible, transporting you back to those golden days of the ‘80s. A wide range of readers can connect with this book and engage with others through a host of diverse, incredible programs the Library will offer in February and March. The lineup features something appealing for all ages, backgrounds, and interests. It will bring Batavians together in the most delightful ways, which really is what One Book, One Batavia is all about.

“Ready Player One” is one of those driveway books. You know the kind, where you pull into your driveway and can’t get out of the car (if you’re listening to an audiobook) because you must make it to the end of the chapter.

Celebrating 25 Years of Batavia MainStreet!

Batavia MainStreet is celebrating 25 years of dedicated service to our Downtown District, bringing revitalization efforts and support to the community since 1999. Our journey has helped shape the city’s landscape, from the Farmers’ Market on North River Street, bringing new life to old properties like at the Batavia Boardwalk Shops, to uniting neighbors through vibrant events and supporting downtown businesses. It’s fun to look back on all the progress we’ve made, celebrate this achievement, and look ahead to Downtown Batavia’s promising future!

The Love of Local

During the month of February, Batavia MainStreet encourages you to discover and share your “Love of Local.” During this typically slow time for our shops and restaurants, we are asking Batavians to share their favorite places to dine, shop, and be entertained on their social media. Create a post on your personal Facebook or Instagram page sharing what you love about a particular downtown retailer, tag the business and Batavia MainStreet (on Facebook) or @downtownbatavia (on Instagram) for a chance win dollars to spend downtown! All posts need to be made between Feb. 1-29 to be eligible. Multiple winners will be selected. Follow Batavia MainStreet on Facebook and @downtownbatavia on Instagram for more information.

Congratulations to the 2023 Citizens of the Year! A duo of dynamite Batavia volunteers was named the 2023 Batavia Citizens of the Year. The Batavia Chamber of Commerce will honor Dave and Marge Brown on Thursday, April 25, 2024, at the Chamber’s annual awards event. Additionally, Batavia RSVP is the Spirit of Batavia Award winner for 2023. The selection committee also chose to present a Batavia Community Impact award to the Fox Valley Patriotic Organization and the Flag Day Committee for their efforts to bring the Flag Day Monument to downtown Batavia. According to multiple nomination letters, Dave and Marge have chosen to serve the community for over three decades in a myriad of ways, sometimes as a team and other times flying solo. Marge, a former teacher, currently serves as a co-chair for the Batavia Foundation for Educational Excellence (BFEE). In this role she has been instrumental in promoting the Bulldog Alumni Nation connecting alumni from around the region, state, nation, and the world. Dave is a sixth generation Batavian

who served several terms as a Batavia alderman and on the Kane County Board, during the time of the pandemic. According to a nomination letter from Dan Hoefler, “It was his (Dave’s) initiative and drive to see the shuttered Sam’s Club used as a site to provide needed immunizations to safeguard the safety of the region’s health.” The pair were also integral in the completion of the Flag Day Monument. Dave volunteered as construction manager, checking on the project daily while Marge worked with other volunteers to fundraise and promote the project. Although this is only a snippet of their ongoing efforts, serving this community has truly been their life’s work.

Spirit of Batavia and Community Impact Award Honorees Congratulations also to Batavia RSVP as the 2023 Spirit of Batavia award winner. The award goes to an organization that has made significant contributions to the Batavia community. Celebrating their 35th year in 2023, Batavia RSVP is an intergenerational volunteer program that serves Batavians by identifying the needs of senior individuals within the community and then coordinating a volunteer response. Entirely directed and run by volunteers, Ron Link is the current president of the nonprofit. The selection committee (past Citizen of the Year winners) are also empowered to present Community Impact Awards if they deem it appropriate. This award goes to

projects or initiatives that have a grand significance and impact on our community. Selected to win a Community Impact Award is the Fox Valley Patriotic Organization and Batavia Flag Committee under the direction of Austin Dempsey and Linda Schielke. Through their formidable efforts, the Flag Day Monument in downtown Batavia was built and dedicated in 2023. These awards, along with the Ole Awards, are to be presented at Inspire 2024: A Celebration of Those Who Inspire Us on Thursday, April 25, 2024, at Revelry 675, 675 S. River St. in Batavia. For ticket information, register online at bataviachamber.org/events or contact the Chamber at (630) 879-7134.
