Message from the Mayor

reetings,

In a historic moment for the Batavia Police Department, I am honored to introduce the newest member of our team: a highly trained and friendly dog named River. Under the guidance of Batavia Police Community Officer Elizabeth Webb, River is undergoing extensive training to prepare for his role on the force. We anticipate that River will become a key ambassador for police-community relations, as well as using her keen sense of smell and perception in situations requiring police action. Keep an eye out for a chance to meet River and experience firsthand her friendly yet vigilant instincts as a valued member of our city’s police force.

In recent months, I have had the privilege of visiting senior citizen groups with Batavia Police Chief Shawn Mazza and Officer Webb. They have reported on criminal activities that appear to be directly targeting our senior population, particularly through internet and computer platforms. Our police force has observed that local seniors are increasingly becoming victims of scams aimed at stealing personal information, such as credit card details, Social Security numbers, and checking account data. Criminals use this information for unauthorized purchases and services. We urge all residents to be extremely cautious when sharing such information in unfamiliar situations or encounters.

As you travel around town, take note of several newly installed historical plaques, funded by a generous donation from the Dunham Foundation of Aurora. One such location with a unique place in American history is the downtown intersection of west Wilson Street and Batavia Avenue. On July 21, 1919, a U.S. Army convoy passed through Batavia Avenue while exploring the planned route of the Lincoln Highway. It is said that an Army officer named Dwight D. Eisenhower stood at the Wilson Street intersection for about 45 minutes, directing traffic as the convoy refilled its vehicles using a city water tank nearby. Some 41 years later, on October 25, 1960, then-presidential candidate John F. Kennedy stopped at this same intersection during a campaign motorcade to deliver a short speech. History notes that during their presidencies, Eisenhower is credited with creating the U.S. Space Program, while Kennedy famously challenged the nation to land a man on the Moon before the end of the 1960s. Remarkably, during their visits to our town, these two men stood just 50 feet apart. Adding to Batavia's connection to the 1969 Moon landing, it's worth noting that from 1915 to 1918, the minister at the nearby United Methodist Church was Reverend Faye Arnold Moon, the grandfather of astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, who placed the first American flag on the Moon on July 20, 1969.

What a memorable and unique story of circumstances our town proudly holds, connecting us to one of the most significant moments in American history.

City of Batavia

2024 City of Batavia residential brush collection

The final curbside brush collection of the season begins Monday, Dec. 2, for both sides of town. The city’s contractor will pass each residence once during the week. After the final collection, any additional brush must be stored off the parkway until the program resumes in spring or removed by a private service at the resident’s expense. The collection is expected to be completed by the end of that week, weather permitting.

Residents can track the collection status on an electronic map, updated weekdays by 9 a.m. on bataviail.gov/brushcollection. If your brush was placed out by 7 a.m. on Monday and not collected by the end of the day on Friday, call Public Properties & Services at 630-454-2400 by Monday, Dec. 9.

Holiday tree pickup

As part of the City of Batavia’s refuse contract, Groot Industries will provide free collection of one holiday tree per resident at no additional cost during the first two weeks in January on residents’ regular collection dates. Residents do not have to use a sticker for holiday tree removal on these dates only.

After the first two weeks in January, residents should attach a refuse sticker to the tree and place it at the curb on their regular collection date. All materials such as plastic bags, ornaments, lights, nails, etc. should be removed from the trees. Live wreaths and garland should be placed in your regular refuse.

Residential leaf collection options

There are two leaf collection programs available to qualifying Batavia residents who pay the monthly leaf/brush fee on their utility bills, curbside vacuum collection or leaf bag collection:

Curbside vacuum collection provides every resident with up to three collection opportunities (weather permitting).

• Updates showing daily progress will be posted online at bataviail.gov once the program is underway.

• Dates may change due to the weather and volume of leaves put out for collection, although best efforts will be made to remain on schedule. Snow or freezing weather may significantly delay or permanently halt curbside leaf collection, since some of the equipment used to remove leaves is also used to handle deicing/ snowplowing operations.

How the curbside vacuum collection program works:

• Rake leaves to the parkway by 6 a.m. on your scheduled Monday. Collection happens rain or shine.

• Crews will make one pass per home each collection period. Leaves placed after the crew passes may not be collected until the next scheduled date.

• Pile leaves within 6 feet of the curb, preferably in long windrows. Keep them in the parkway.

• Do not rake leaves into the street, as this can cause flooding and slippery conditions.

• Keep leaf piles clear of obstacles like parked cars, mailboxes, utility poles, hydrants, trees, or signs.

• Remove debris like sticks, bags, and plastic bottles from leaf piles to prevent injury, equipment damage, and contamination of leaves sent to agricultural sites.

• The program is designed to collect the majority of leaves during the scheduled time. Use other options for leaves that fall after the program ends.

*Will only be done weather permitting

• Crews with large vacuums work through streets, while smaller equipment handles cul-de-sacs and dead ends.

• Pile limbs and brush separately for scheduled collection. The final brush pickup will be the week of December 2.

• Dispose of ornamental grasses, plants, and corn stalks as yard waste.

LEAF BAG COLLECTION PROGRAM

From Dec. 1 through Dec. 31, 2024, residents can place leaves in brown Kraft yard waste bags for collection on their regular refuse day without a sticker. Yard waste bags (no cans) will be collected weekly until Dec. 31.

Only leaves are allowed in the bags— no grass or other yard waste. Please keep bags as dry as possible.

OTHER OPTIONS FOR LEAVES

• Use a mulching mower to mulch leaves back into the lawn, providing nutrients for the soil.

• Place leaves around plant beds and under trees and shrubs to enrich the soil and insulate plants.

• Stickered yard waste bags or cans will be collected weekly on your regular refuse day through Nov. 30.

If you have any questions about the leaf programs, please call the Street Division of Batavia Public Works at 630-454-2400. Residents can also visit the City’s website at bataviail.gov for the latest updates to the schedule and to view a progress map that is updated daily.

A holiday gift that lasts forever

Like the evolving story of the American flag, Batavia’s Flag Day Monument will continue to document its history and significance for generations. Located next to the Jeffery D. Schielke Government Center in downtown Batavia, the Fox Valley Patriotic Organization plans to expand the monument with an educational park, enhanced lighting, and other features.

When the snow’s gotta go

The City of Batavia public works department is responsible for snow removal and ice control for 120 miles of streets, 168 cul-de-sacs, two city cemeteries, 17 city-owned parking lots, and sidewalks in several locations of the downtown area.

Snow and ice control is considered emergency work in that pavement must be cleared any time of the day or night.

Best efforts will be made to clear all primary streets during the snowstorm. Secondary streets will be plowed following the end of a snowfall after primary streets are cleared.

Crews will make their best efforts to plow aisles of city-owned public parking lots during and after a storm to maintain access to the parking lots during business hours. The major clearing of these lots is performed during the early morning hours.

Please follow these regulations and guidelines to make your streets safer for travel during the winter season:

1. Do not to shovel, blow, or plow snow/ice onto the street at any time.

2. Parking is not allowed on any street during or after a snowfall in which there is an accumulation of 2 inches or more of snow.

3. Clearing snow and ice from sidewalks and driveways is the responsibility of residents and property owners.

4. It is the homeowner’s responsibility to clear snow away from their mailbox for curbside delivery.

5. If accumulating snow occurs on your refuse collection day or the night before, place garbage cans/ carts and recycling carts away from the curbs or edge of road during the snow plowing operation.

If a street has been missed or there is a question or concern relating to the snow removal operations, please call 630-454-2400 between 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

For complete snow removal program details, please visit bataviail.gov/ snowremoval.

TIPS & TRICKS

Rejuvenation Pruning: Do you have a shrub that is too tall, wide or just out of control? Starting in late fall, you can prune up to one-third of the oldest stems down to the ground level. This is called a rejuvenation pruning and it will encourage young healthy branches to fill the open space in the spring.

“Lives in Code: Stories of African American Resilience Under the Illinois Black Codes, 1819-1865” examines the state’s Black Codes, laws that denied black residents fundamental rights. Black people were unable to vote, gather in groups, serve in the militia or own firearms.

“Batavia actively pushed back on the Black Codes by welcoming African American residents as early as the 1850s,” said Museum Director Kate Garrett. “Batavians like James Watts thrived with their families despite Code restrictions on their freedom to move, work and assemble. This presentation will be a chance to learn more about what the lives of these Batavians were like and why their success here makes Batavia such a special place.”

Songs for a New World

According to composer Jason Robert Brown, "Songs for a New World" is “about one moment. It’s about hitting the wall and having to make a choice, or take a stand, or turn around and go back.”

With a rousing score that blends elements of pop, gospel and jazz, featuring tight harmonies and darling vocals, "Songs for a New World" transports its audience from the deck of a Spanish sailing ship bound for a new land to the ledge of a New York penthouse. Characters range from a young adult in the Bronx who dreams of becoming a famous basketball player to a forlorn and neglected Mrs. Claus lamenting as Christmas approaches.

A small but powerful, diverse cast and a supercharged, well-crafted score appeal to old and new generations alike as each character — in their own way — takes hold of that one moment and enters a new world.

TAKE3

With a flair for the wild and unexpected, the genre-defying trio TAKE3 brings the refinement of a rigorous classical music background and infuses it with rock star charisma. Trained at the world’s top conservatories, TAKE3 has expanded their repertoire from Bach and Beethoven to Bieber and The Beach Boys. Known for their infectious and

down-to-earth onstage personalities, this threesome leaves their indelible mark on captivated crowds around the country, performing their arrangements of top pop hits, Americana and their signature classical mashups.

“Stunning, Superb, Powerful…” says the Los Angeles Times of TAKE3: Where ROCK meets BACH, featuring the music of popular artists including The Beatles, Billy Joel, Elvis, Neil Diamond and Imagine Dragons. The group plays crowd favorites such as “Sweet Home Alabama”, “Hallelujah,” “Game of Thrones,” “Stand by Me” and “Pirates of the Caribbean.” TAKE3 is celebrated for seamlessly weaving in and out of musical styles with jaw dropping virtuosity. Their fierce energy is combined with charm, wit and easy camaraderie with audiences, making them a crowd favorite wherever they perform.

Batavia Public Library WINTER CHALLENGE

Winter in Batavia is that special time when the weather turns chilly (usually) and some of us want to curl up by the fire with a good book.

But living in the Midwest, we like a challenge. No, not just a 55-degree New Year’s Day tempered by that 2-degree St. Patrick’s Day. We’re talking about a reading challenge.

This winter, we are extending a challenge to patrons: Winter Challenge. Winter Challenge is a reading club through the Batavia Public Library.

For teens and adults, it’s a straight-up reading club. Adults and teens may participate by reading or listening to books, then log their accomplishments to earn prizes.

For children ranging in age from infants through 14 years old, Winter Challenge

The Library will be closed:

encompasses reading and completing fun activities to earn points. Those points stack up and qualify them to earn prizes, too.

Previously called Winter Library Club, Winter Challenge will begin a little earlier than last year, on Monday, Dec. 16, and wraps up on Friday, Jan. 31.

Preregistration begins Monday, Dec. 2, on Beanstack.

• Friday, Nov 15, closed 9 a.m.-1 p.m. for staff training. Open 1-5 p.m.

• Wednesday, Nov. 27, at 5 p.m. for Thanksgiving

• Thursday, Nov. 28, for Thanksgiving.

• Tuesday, Dec. 24, for the Christmas holiday.

• Wednesday, Dec. 25, for the Christmas holiday.

• Tuesday, Dec. 31, for New Year’s Eve.

• Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2025, for New Year’s Day.

Library Hours

Between Dec. 16 and Jan. 31, simply read or listen to books, or complete activities, and record your accomplishments on the Beanstack app. Or participants may fill out paper logs and return them to one of the Library’s service desks.

Reading logs and activity sheets will be available at the Library and on the Library’s website beginning Monday, Dec. 16. Printed logs may be

Monday-Thursday: 9 a.m.-9 p.m.

Friday & Saturday: 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Sunday: 12-5 p.m.

Telephone

Fax: 630-879-9118

TTY: 630-879-8335

Home Delivery: 630-879-1393, ext. 290

submitted by those not using Beanstack to record their books and activities.

All Winter Challenge points must be earned and entered on Beanstack, or turned in to the Youth Services or Reference desks, by 5 p.m. on Jan. 31.

For every three books read, adults and teens will earn one free prize, which will include books. These patrons may turn in a maximum of 10 logs.

Adult and teen Batavia cardholders who participate also will earn raffle tickets for our grand prize drawings each time they submit a completed reading log. Adults and teens may pick up their book prizes as they submit each completed log.

This winter we challenge you and your family to saddle up that sled and cart home a stack of books to enjoy when the weather outside is frightful.

The Fox Valley Newcomers and Neighbors Club (FVNN) held an ice cream social in June. More information about the group can be found on the club's Facebook page or at www.foxvalleynewcomers.com.

Catch up with the Fox Valley Newcomers and Neighbors Join the Club

Fox Valley Newcomers and Neighbors is a local social club with many activities that members can join in on, depending on their interests, with an active leadership committed to ensuring members get the best from their membership.

The group has a common goal: to make friends and enjoy life. Members are both new and not-so-new to the area. Some still work, but many are retired, maybe getting back into social activities after children go off to school or just people looking to network and make new friends. Although the club's focus is now on “neighbors,” they also welcome newcomers to the area, as many members were.

Fox Valley Newcomes and Neighbors has members in both Kane and DuPage counties representing 23 communities so far. Although centered on the Tri-Cities, where many of the activities take place, members live as far as Huntley, Sugar Grove and Bloomingdale and towns throughout the general area.

Since the focus is on building friendships, the group has members of all backgrounds and from all over – empty nesters, people without children, singles, people who grew up here and those now here for

their kids and grandkids. Members have a variety of interests, but most importantly, everyone wants to feel connected to a group as our community.

Activities are plentiful and occur in both daytime and evening, ranging from monthly luncheons to table games (cards and Mexican Train), to book clubs, special events and a men’s group, AMP (Active Men – Plus), as well as golf in season (women’s and men's).

The club also supports an annually selected charity through raffles and events. This year's activities will support Lazarus House.

Membership dues are $30 annually for a primary member and $15 for a secondary household member. Events at venues are pay-if-you-go, and games tend to be in people’s homes where guests bring their own beverages with snacks provided.

The annual social season started in September, so this is a great opportunity for people to learn about Fox Valley Newcomes and Neigbors and join the fun for another year.

Members say they know for sure, you’ll find the group to be friendly, caring and welcoming.

RONALD A. MURPHY DMD

FOR THE SAKE OF

SMILES

Dr. Ron Murphy's dental practice has a mission to help others

As Dr. Ron Murphy contemplates what drew him into dentistry, the answer is quite simple: he loves helping people.

For nearly 20 years he has helped others achieve the smile they desire and the dental health they need at his dental practice, Ronald A. Murphy DMD in Batavia.

“I love helping people,” Murphy said.

In his practice, there’s an emphasis on personalized dentistry, helping patients understand their range of options for all their dental needs. Providing a wide range of dental services, patients can seek the care they need for different dental needs in a single location.

It’s a true team at the practice, and this includes the newest addition to the team, hygienist Sheri Gubash, who brings more than 30 years of dental experience to the practice.

“More than just her experience, she is very gentle and thorough. She puts the patient’s needs first,” Murphy said.

Gubash joins fellow hygienist Rachelle Nicholson to help care for patients’ gums and handle cleanings at the practice.

“As my practice continues to grow, we’re here for the community and taking really good care of everyone,” Murphy said.

In his practice, Murphy sees all ages, from young children through

patients well into their 90s. It’s a place where everyone feels welcome, and the staff works hard to help people feel at ease. Murphy said starting dental visits when children are young helps them to understand the routine dental care and eases fears.

“We try to make it as easy as possible,” Murphy said.

Using the latest state-of-the-art technology, the caring staff at Ronald A. Murphy DMD provides a full range of dental services. The practice provides patient care for cleanings to dealing with cavities, whitening services, repairing a chipped tooth and handling gum disease, too.

When a dental emergency arises, the team answers the call, whether

it’s a knocked-out tooth or lost crown. Being available to handle emergencies is made possible as Murphy also lives in Batavia.

Raised in Central Illinois, Murphy and his wife were drawn to Batavia, seeking a place to raise their family.

“We came to Batavia, and it just felt like home,” Murphy said. “Batavia is a very family-orientated area.”

Murphy and his wife raised their three daughters in the community. In addition to caring for patients in the practice, Murphy is a part of local organizations. For the last 13 years his practice and patients enjoyed supporting Toys for Tots, and the Batavia practice is a drop-off location.

“Last year we filled two boxes,” Murphy said. He also supports the Batavia United Way and its Success by 6 program, supporting literacy and early learning experiences in the community, a cause that Murphy feels strongly as he sees education as a path to improving people’s lives and communities.

In addition to his community service, Murphy is a member of the American Dental Association, the Illinois Dental Society and the Fox Valley Dental Society.
