What’s Inside
Message from the City reetings,
The coming general election scheduled for Nov. 8 is being monitored with strong interest by elected officials throughout northern Illinois. A big concern for Batavia is the major redrawing of election precincts which leaves many of the previous representatives whom we have voted for and elected to be our voices in Springfield and Washington no longer on Batavia ballots in the coming election.
Throughout our town, there has occurred a massive remapping of who represents us, so when Batavians go to vote on Nov. 8, they will find that the names on the ballot for state representatives, state senator, and congressional representatives have greatly changed.
League of Women Voters Central Kane County has embarked upon an intense public education plan to help local voters learn whose representative districts have been changed and what new names are to be found on the ballot. I would encourage every voter to find out for themselves who is seeking election in their area and what public positions they have on state and federal issues that may impact the region when the new representatives are chosen. You may also wish to read Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham's office website for further information on who is running and the locations for early voting. The Kane County Clerk's website is found at kanecountyclerk.org.

Redistricting in Batavia
Before casting a vote in November, Batavia residents should take note of the new district boundaries drawn earlier this year.

As we roll into the fall/autumn season in the weeks ahead, I want to encourage all bicycle riders, skateboard riders, and roller skaters to take extra special care and attention when on public streets or places with larger amounts of vehicle traffic. Piles of cut tree branches and bags of raked leaves can very quickly make visibility a key factor. Please use extra caution when mixing bikes or skates with passing vehicles.
Here's hoping that everyone has a memorable and fun-filled autumn season and that the sports activity by Batavia teams receives plenty of attention and cheers in the autumn breezes that we hopefully will enjoy in the days ahead.

MUNICIPAL CENTER TO BE RENAMED
Building will be christened Jeffery D. Schielke Government Center
The Batavia City Council unanimously approved renaming the Batavia Municipal Government Center the Jeffery D. Schielke Government Center.
“During his 41-year-tenure, Mayor Schielke has served his beloved hometown with high honor and distinction, having provided leadership during a period of unprecedented growth and prosperity,” the Batavia City Council proclamation states. “There is likely no other person who has spent more hours in service to the citizens of Batavia at our Government Center.”
When he first took office on May 4, 1981, Schielke was the youngest mayor in Batavia’s history. He was 32. After winning his historic 11th term in 2021, Schielke became the second longest-serving mayor in Illinois and the 11th longest-serving mayor in the U.S.
A life-long resident of Batavia, Schielke is a 1967 graduate of Batavia High School and a member of one of the first graduating classes of Waubonsee College, and an alumnus of Aurora University. His service to the community includes being a Batavia auxiliary police officer, a paidon-call Batavia firefighter, and a volunteer photographer for the Batavia Fire Department. He has also been the president of the Batavia Historical Society, the Batavia Chamber of Commerce 2004 “Citizen of the Year,” and the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus Executive Board Director.
The announcement coincided with the city council’s approval of contracts for the government center remodeling project.
The renovation project includes remodeling the center portion of the building’s interior as well as several exterior improvements.

The remodel will further modernize the 120 year-old building that saw its last update in the 1990s. Plans call for creating two, separate and more functional and inviting lobbies with separate entrances – one for the Batavia Police Department, and the other for city hall reception which will include the Utility Billing and Community and Economic Development departments. The building’s second floor will include more office space for the human resources and information systems departments. The Albright Community Theatre will continue to be located on the third-floor, accessible for shows via an elevator in the city hall lobby. A third-floor bathroom for theater patrons is also planned.
The building’s exterior renovation plans call for new entrance doors and awnings more appropriate for the building’s architecture, as well as changes to the parking, landscaping and signage on the building’s west side.

Residential leaf collection continues
There are two leaf collection programs available to qualifying residents who pay the monthly leaf/brush fee on their utility bills:
CURBSIDE VACUUM COLLECTION
This program provides every resident with up to three collection opportunities (weather permitting).
Updates showing daily progress will be posted online at www.cityofbatavia. net once the program is underway.
Leaves should be raked into piles no farther than 6 feet back from the curb. Raking leaves into a long pile will speed the process. Leaf piles should be in the parkway – the area between the sidewalk and street – as equipment cannot be used in alleys.
Leaves should not be raked into the street. This will obstruct the flow of stormwater runoff during rain events and cause street flooding, as well as slippery streets.
not be combined with leaf piles. Limbs/brush should only be placed at the curb if there is a scheduled collection. The final citywide brush collection will be done the week of Nov. 28 for both sides of town. (See page 7 for details.)
Ornamental grasses, plants, and corn stalks should be disposed of as yard waste.
LEAF BAG COLLECTION PROGRAM
Dates may change due to the weather and volume of leaves put out for collection, although best efforts will be made to remain on schedule. Snow or freezing weather may significantly delay or permanently halt curbside leaf collection, since some of the equipment used to remove leaves is also used to handle deicing/ snowplowing operations.
FINAL
Avoid placing leaves near obstacles such as parked vehicles, mailboxes, utility poles/boxes, hydrants, trees, or signposts.
Avoid placing debris like sticks, bags, and plastic bottles in leaf piles, as this can cause injury to personnel, damage equipment, and cause delays. Foreign objects also contaminate the leaf material, which is taken to an agricultural site.
From Dec. 1 through Dec. 31, residents may place leaves in brown Kraft yard waste bags and put them out for collection on their scheduled refuse collection day without a sticker. The refuse collection company will collect yard waste bags (no cans) weekly until Dec. 31.
HOW THE CURBSIDE VACUUM COLLECTION PROGRAM WORKS
Rake leaves to the parkway by 6 a.m. on the Monday of your scheduled week. Leaves will be collected rain or shine.
Crews will make one pass by every qualifying residence during each collection period. Leaves that are placed out after the collection crew has passed by may not be picked up for another two weeks until the next scheduled pickup date.
The program is intended to collect the majority of leaves residents may have during the curbside vacuum collection program time frame. Residents are encouraged to use other options for leaves that drop after the curbside vacuum collection program has finished for the season.
Various crews are working simultaneously during the program period. Trucks with large vacuum trailers are used for through streets, and a truck with a small trailer vacuum goes into areas where the larger equipment cannot navigate such as cul-de-sacs and dead ends.
Limbs/brush should be placed in a separate pile for collection and may
Only leaves may be placed in the yard waste bags. No grass or other yard waste can be mixed with the leaves. Please try to keep the yard waste bags as dry as possible.
ALTERNATE OPTIONS
Use a mulching lawnmower and mulch leaves back into the lawn.
Place leaves around plant beds and under trees and shrubs.
Stickered yard waste bags/cans will be collected weekly on your scheduled refuse collection day through Dec. 2.
If you have any questions about the leaf programs, please call the Street Division of Batavia Public Works at 630-454-2400. Residents can also visit www.cityofbatavia.net for the latest updates to the schedule and to view a progress map that is updated daily.

Final brush collection for the season
The final curbside residential brush collection for the season is scheduled to begin Monday, Nov.28, for both sides of town. Collection trucks will go past each residence one time during the week, beginning on Monday. Residents who generate brush after the final collection has been completed will need to store the brush someplace other than the parkway until the program resumes next spring or they may contact a private service to have it removed at the resident’s expense.
It is anticipated that this final collection will be completed by the end of the week of Nov. 28, weather permitting. Residents can view the status of the current brush collection cycle on an electronic map. Updates are posted on the cityofbatavia.net by 9 a.m. on weekdays from Tuesday through Friday and will show all areas. If your brush was out at 7 a.m. on Monday and not collected by the end of the workday on Friday, please notify the Public Properties & Services Division at 630-454-2400 no later than Monday, Dec. 5.
If yard waste items are mixed with your brush pile (twigs are permitted), they will not be collected. Waste Management will collect yard waste bags/containers with leaves, twigs, evergreen clippings, roots, stumps, ornamental grasses, and plants on your regular trash collection day, through Dec.2. Maximum weight for yard waste is 50 pounds per bag/ container; a refuse sticker should be attached to each bag/container. Yard waste containers should be clearly labeled “YARD WASTE” with the label facing toward the street.
If you have any questions, please call the Public Properties & Services Division at 630-454-2400 weekdays from 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. or visit cityofbatavia.net/brushcollection.
MAHONEY CREEK TRIBUTARY PROJECT
The City of Batavia completed the Mahoney Creek Tributary Project, celebrating with a Batavia Chamber of Commerce ribbon-cutting in September. The project helped to alleviate repeated drainage concerns and flash flooding along the Mahoney Creek Tributary and mainstream.

DIGGING INTO
SNOW REMOVAL
The City of Batavia public works department is responsible for snow removal and ice control for 120 miles of streets, 168 cul-de-sacs, two city cemeteries, 17 city-owned parking lots, and sidewalks in several locations of the downtown area.
Snow and ice control is considered emergency work in that pavement must be cleared any time of the day or night. The rate and snowfall accumulation, moisture content, temperature, time of day, wind direction, velocity, and duration are all taken into consideration in the city’s approach to responding to each individual snowstorm.
During snowfall events, the City of Batavia spreads deicing salt on primary streets. In most cases, salt will be applied continuously to secondary streets; however, the application rate
of salt to secondary streets will be less than primary streets and, depending on the events, may not be done. After a snowfall has ended, secondary streets are plowed, and deicers are applied mainly to intersections, hills, and curves. A salt brine solution may be applied prior to a snow event to prevent icy conditions. In addition, the city puts additives into the salt to accelerate the melting process and to limit off-pavement scattering.
Best efforts will be made to clear all primary streets during the snowstorm. Secondary streets will be plowed following the end of a snowfall after primary streets are cleared. Depending on variable conditions, some streets may remain snow packed after plowing operations have been completed.
Courts and cul-de-sacs will be plowed
Please follow these regulations and guidelines to make your streets safer for travel during the winter season:
1. Street Regulations: Snowplows are designed to unload snow to the side, forming a heap along the curb or edge of the pavement. The city understands that this leaves a heap through driveways, but this process is the most efficient way to remove snow from our streets. Please do your part to help keep our town free of hazardous conditions. It is very important not to shovel, blow, or plow snow/ice onto the street at any time. This could create an unsafe driving surface. Property owners should notify their snow removal contractors that snow is not to be deposited on the public roadway, meaning it cannot be plowed across the street.
2. Parking Prohibited: Residents are advised that parking is not allowed on any street during or after a snowfall in which there is an accumulation of 2 inches or more of snow. This prohibition is in effect until 24 hours after the end of the snowfall or until the street is plowed and all snow is removed, whichever occurs first.
3. Sidewalk/Driveway Snow Removal: Clearing snow and ice from sidewalks and driveways is the responsibility of residents and property owners. The City of Batavia encourages citizens to clear sidewalks, especially for children walking to school.
4. Mailboxes: Best efforts are made to plow as close to the curb as possible; however, it is the homeowner’s responsibility to clear snow away from their mailbox for curbside delivery. The City of Batavia is not responsible
after primary and secondary streets are completed if snow accumulation is greater than 2 inches. Cul-de-sacs can take up to eight times longer to plow than a through-street of a similar size. They are generally done during the day after the snow has stopped. Crews will make their best efforts to plow aisles of city-owned public parking lots during and after a storm to maintain access to the parking lots during business hours. The major clearing of these lots is performed during the early morning hours.
The City of Batavia plows most streets within the city limits; however, there are several roads that are the responsibility of other government agencies. Kane County-maintained roadways include Kirk Road, Randall Road, Fabyan Parkway, and Main Street (west of Randall Road).
for repairing mailboxes damaged by snowplows if the face of the mailbox is less than 6 inches behind the back of curb or road edge and a height less than 42 inches above the road. It is the responsibility of individual homeowners to install and maintain their mailboxes properly. Properly installed mailboxes damaged by City of Batavia snow removal equipment will be repaired or replaced with a standard-type mailbox and post for a cost not to exceed $50 each.
5. Refuse Collection: If accumulating snow occurs on your refuse collection day or the night before, please remember to place garbage cans/carts and recycling carts away from the curbs or edge of road during the snow plowing operation. Garbage cans/carts and recycle carts should never be placed in the roadway.
6. Parkways: Occasionally, parkway damage may occur during the plowing process. It will be repaired in the spring when pulverized dirt is available. Please notify the Street Division to have your address placed on a restoration list.
7. Plowing Equipment: Allow plenty of space when following snow removal vehicles, as they must back up frequently. Do not attempt to pass a snowplow that is engaged in removal activities.
If a street has been missed or there is a question or concern relating to the snow removal operations, please call the street division of Batavia Public Works at 630-454-2400 between 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

BEING INTENTIONAL ABOUT
It’s the Fourth of July at Christmas DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION
Many organizations have committees, work groups, or initiatives to focus on diversity, equity and inclusion, or DEI.
The City of Batavia staff wanted their DEI work group to be intentional.
“Many communities have a program, but they have no direction on where they want to go with it. We thought the best place to start is with our employees. We wanted to look at what our employees encounter, and what do we do in the city to create a diverse environment here,” said Wendy Bednarek, director of human resources for the City of Batavia and co-chair of the city staff’s DEI work group.
The city staff had already assembled a DEI working group of staff members when they learned of a new six-month pilot project that provides education and technical assistance for initiating DEI within organizations. The program is offered by the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, Illinois City/County Management Association, and the University of Illinois Chicago Great Cities Institute. Batavia earned a spot in the program, and the committee itself will become part of a larger study on how organizations can form and sustain effective DEI employee committees.
One primary goal for the city is to be more intentional about DEI. As Bednarek explained, by nature of their jobs in public service, many city staff, such as first responders, are already intentional about DEI: it’s part of their roles to be always respectful and professional. The city staff would like to foster that intentionality in all employees.
“By making the City of Batavia staff a more welcoming and accepting environment, we can show the entire community that their government is a
diverse group,” Bednarek said. “We will be an employer of choice.”
The city’s DEI workgroup meetings hinge on a judgment-free environment, said Anthony Isom, assistant to Batavia’s city administrator and co-chair of the DEI workgroup.
“We wanted to create an environment where participants could feel comfortable sharing feedback that we would not express openly but needs to be said for the healing process to begin so we can move forward,” Isom said.
Representatives from all the city’s departments are part of the group, and everyone is encouraged to candidly share their experiences – understanding what they say stays in the room.
“The hope is talking about experiences we can learn what in our organization –processes or policies – that is creating a situation that we didn’t mean to,” Bednarek said.
Isom said sometimes employees share new perspectives on incidents people were already aware of. Or they will discuss past employees and leadership styles that may not have worked for each person, and then share how they adapted to the situation.
Overcoming negative perceptions of DEI efforts is also important, Isom explained.
“Many people don’t understand what the DEI program is, and they think they are in trouble,” he said. “We talk about what we can do to change that mindset. We understand each department has its own culture and way of doing things. You are not going to change the way people are doing things; it’s about identifying ways of being more sensitive when you need to be.”
Looking for the perfect holiday present for a very special person in your life? The Fox Valley Patriotic Organization invites you to buy a brick for the Flag Day Monument which will be completed on the Riverwalk in downtown Batavia on Flag Day 2023 (June 14). On this day, the ribbon will be cut to celebrate the completed monument dedicated to the American Flag and to Dr. Bernard Cigrand, the Batavia dentist who worked closely with President Woodrow Wilson in 1916 to have a nationally proclaimed Flag Day. Considered by many to be the Father of Flag Day. The monument will salute him, along with Illinois Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, active and veteran military, and first responders.
Please consider honoring someone with the gift of a monogrammed brick that can have up to three lines of print as well as a company or organization logo. Visit flagdaymonument.com to order your brick. At this site, you can also purchase a challenge coin and lapel pin with engravings of the monument as well.
Please consider helping to make “Flag Day—Every Day” by contributing to the Flag Day Monument in Batavia. And, put June 14, 2023, on your calendar for a fabulous evening dedicated to the new monument when we cut the ribbon for the completed tribute to Old Glory.

Chiefly supportive: Admin juggles it all
Joanne Miller, administrative assistant for the Batavia Police Department has seen a lot in her 24 years with the department.
She’s worked for four police chiefs, assisting them in everything from budgeting for supplies to hiring new officers. “It’s very interesting. There are a lot of moving parts of the job. I work with the chief, deputy chiefs, officers, the city offices, records, vendors, and the public all at the same time. It is always a puzzle that is continually changing.” Miller said.
Her career with the Batavia Police Department began working part-time in the records department. She was the team lead for the department’s Live Scan Fingerprinting and Booking System – establishing training and guidelines and maintaining responsibility for the quality control and administration of Live Scan information.
When the full-time administrative assistant job for the police department became available in 2016, Miller said she was fortunate to get the position.
Miller never set out to work in a police department. “I wanted to be a travel agent, but I pivoted,” Miller said. She returned to school and graduated with honors from an executive secretarial certificate program. Fresh from school, she applied for a job with the City of Lubbock, Texas,
but ended up getting a role in the police department as a secretary for investigations. She took it.
It takes a certain kind of person to handle working in a police department, Miller said. One incident in Texas showed her she had what it took.
“I was alone in the office. A man came in and said, ‘I’m here about the murder,’” she recalled. She didn’t know if he was there to confess or share a tip, but she remained calm. “I realized I’m going to be with some of the worst people,” she said.
Batavia is interesting, too.
“We talk to the victims and suspects. We see arrestees in booking and sometimes need to conduct searches on females if no female police officer is available,” she said. “We process the reports and see the evidence. If we are lucky, we hear the outcome.”
Today Miller’s role is administrative. She’s responsible for processing invoices, helping with the police department budget, and purchasing items for the police department, arranging for training, managing applications for videogaming licenses and handicap placards, and so much more.
She also works with the police command staff to set up police testing. This involves working with the Batavia Police and Fire Commission who are responsible
for hiring and promoting officers. She is their recording secretary. Additionally, she assists with the police abilities test by registering the candidates and keeping track of their scores.
“It’s fun to be involved in the testing and hiring,” she said. “I see a lot of the officers from the beginning and as they move up and it’s interesting to see how they progress. There’s a lot of movement in the department.”
Miller also enjoys participating in the Shop with a Cop event, a program that pairs police department personnel with at-risk children for a holiday shopping trip.
“The kids have fun and love buying gifts for their family and friends,” she said.
Miller’s work has earned her recognition as the Batavia Police Department Civilian Employee of the Year in 2010 and 2014.
“I get to be in the middle of it all. It’s a good group. I feel fortunate to work with the staff we have now. We all get along and we have a good team,” she said.
Miller is also active in the networking and training group, Illinois Law Enforcement Administrative Professionals Organization, serving as their treasurer.
She and her husband Tim live in Aurora. She has two adult children and two granddaughters, and a grandson is on the way this fall.

BATAVIA CITY EMPLOYEE PROFILE: Joanne Miller, Administrative Assistant, Batavia Police Department
Batavia has a new police chief: Shawn Mazza
Shawn Mazza is Batavia’s new Chief of the Police Department. Mazza replaced Chief Dan Eul who retired in September.
Mazza is a 23-year veteran of the Batavia Police Department and has served various roles during his tenure including patrol officer, field training officer, patrol officer-in-charge, detective, detective sergeant, and deputy chief. He previously served as a member of the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force and has been active as a volunteer with Special Olympics Illinois throughout his career.
“The City is fortunate to have Chief Mazza in this critical role. He is a dedicated leader who has made public
safety of the citizens of Batavia and the men and women of the Batavia Police Department his top priority,” said Batavia City Administrator Laura Newman. “His extensive experience in both administrative and patrol roles, and his demonstrated commitment to our community, will ensure the Batavia Police Department is well-positioned for the future.”
Mazza has been an award-winning officer for Batavia since arriving in 1999. He was the Officer of the Year in 2001 and was awarded the Loyalty, Service, and Commitment to Department & Community Award in 2007 and 2009. In 2012 he was nominated for the Louis Spuhler Kane County Officer of the Year Award and ultimately awarded the department’s Life Saving Medal for actions taken to save the life of a person threatening suicide.
“I feel a great sense of pride in being named Batavia Police Chief. I am
extremely fortunate to have gained knowledge and skills in my work within this organization, and I hope to continue to be an agent for positive change in this community,” Mazza said.
As Batavia’s police chief, Mazza will oversee a department of over 50 staff members and a $7 million budget.
“Batavia has an outstanding and dedicated team of officers and civilian employees who have a passion for serving and protecting the citizens of this community,” Mazza said. “I am proud to be part of this team.”
Born and raised in Naperville, Mazza holds a bachelor of science degree from Arizona State University in Justice Studies and is a graduate of Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command.
Filling Mazza’s position as Deputy Chief is Batavia Police Watch Commander Michael Johnson.
MARKER PROJECT:
Highlighting significant people and events in Batavia's past
The Batavia Historical Society, in collaboration with the Batavia Park District’s Depot Museum, Batavia Public Library, and the City of Batavia, has received a grant of $75,000 from the Dunham Foundation for the production and installation of historical markers and the development of a companion website which highlights several significant events in the 189-year history of the City of Batavia. Sites include:
• The Government Center (100 N. Island Ave.) which was originally built by one of Batavia’s three windmill manufacturers but also became the site where critical parts for the rocket that first landed on the Moon in 1969 were designed.
• Bellevue Place (333 S. Jefferson St.) where Mary Todd Lincoln briefly stayed in 1885, during the time it was used as a sanitarium.
• The former site of the Shumway Foundry on Shumway Avenue where the mold used to make the Academy Award was created
• And many more sites to come.
The signs, designed by a local firm, Pedersen Design, and purchased through a local sign company, Aubrey Sign, will be made of brass to withstand the test of time and weather. The project is in the design phase and signs are expected to be fabricated this winter to be installed in Spring 2023. The City of Batavia will install and maintain the signs.
The project will include an online walking tour, connecting the sites and introducing both residents and tourists to the rich history that is one of the most attractive attributes of Batavia.

TEACHERS Honor Our
The Batavia Foundation for Educational Excellence’s Honor A Teacher Campaign for 2022 will be dedicated to our teachers, staff and administrators who are working tirelessly to provide quality learning to our students. Your gift will provide support and bolster the work of the Batavia Foundation for Educational Excellence (BFEE) mission of enhancing and enriching public education.
Over the past 15 years, BFEE funded grants totaling over $375,000, thanks to the generosity of our donors. Your gift supports BFEE’s grants to educators in the Batavia Public Schools to explore new instructional methods and to implement valuable enrichment programs for students. Like all donations to BFEE, your contribution is tax deductible.
All exemplary educators may be honored including teachers, paraprofessionals, librarians, art, music, media, physical fitness
and science specialists, coaches, guidance counselors, support staff, custodians, etc. throughout our district who have made a positive difference in the life of a Batavia student. Monies raised go directly to fund Teacher grants, awarded each Spring, which carry out our mission:
“Batavia Foundation for Educational Excellence will be a partner with our schools and community, fostering innovation and expanding opportunities to ensure BPS101 students are always learning and always growing.”
There is no minimum donation amount, and you may honor up to 10 teachers with a single donation (donations are not charged per teacher). Your honoree(s) will receive a thank you card that includes your child’s name (but not the amount of your gift). When you give a gift, you are paying tribute to your child’s teacher(s) while simultaneously supporting innovative educational programs.

Maintain Quality Schools Without Changing the Bond and Interest Tax Levy
The community-created plan to improve our schools on the Nov. 8 ballot includes updates to every school building.
> Safety and security upgrades
> Indoor environmental quality improvements
> Updated science labs at the middle and high schools
> Replacement of two elementary schools that are not financially cost-effective to renovate
> Repairing and renovating indoor
outdoor building
These improvements can all be made without increasing the current bond and interest tax levy — it will remain unchanged. Our school buildings represent a multi-million dollar investment by our community. Maintaining them and keeping them in good working condition will protect this investment for generations to come.

But just before opening night, the leading lady breaks her ankle. Will Peggy be able to step in and become a star? The score is chock-full of Broadway standards, including "You're Getting To Be A Habit With Me," "Dames," "We're In the Money," "Lullaby of Broadway," "Shuffle Off to Buffalo" and "Forty-Second Street."

3D PRINTING AT THE LIBRARYPersonalize a holiday gift with
It feels like we all have been running so hard this year that there’s barely time to slow down and take in our surroundings.
Throw in the high prices. The constant juggling. The demands on your limited time. We understand.
The Batavia Public Library offers an array of options to make it easier as you work through your holiday shopping list. Yes, you can take care of some holiday gifting needs at the Library.
One of the coolest gift options is to make something fun or functional on the Library’s 3D printer. 3D printing is incredibly popular, and the array of presents you can print is astounding.
How cool would it be to create an articulated dragon or a velociraptor for your grandson? Or two cute owls cuddling and give it to your girlfriend? For those on your list who enjoy functional gifts, you could make a laptop stand, cellphone
holder or stackable battery holders. For the retro-chic cat lovers on your list, there is a geodesic dome cat house bed (some assembly required).
A host of collectibles can be created on the 3D printer, too. Collectibles are hot right now, and you could create Minecraft characters, Dungeons & Dragons models or even War Hammer tokens.
If you want to blow someone away with an out-of-this-world gift, NASA freely shares some of the space agency’s 3D resources with the public. Just download a model and personalize it for a truly one-of-a-kind present, such as a NASA insignia, or miniatures of the Mars Odyssey or Apollo Lunar Module.
Batavia Library card holders may head to bataviapubliclibrary.org/3dprinting and scroll through the various options. Select a file, along with a filament color, and submit your print job. It costs $1 per file and 10 cents per gram of filament used. Make sure to allow up to two weeks for your project to print, depending on bookings.
For those on your gift list who adore books, and don’t we all, Friends of the Batavia Public Library have two opportunities to purchase books and other materials at deeply discounted prices.
The Friends will host its Vintage Book Sale from 9:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10, in the Founders Room at the Library. The Friends’ traditional, monthly Book Sale is scheduled for the same times that day, but in the lower-level FriendSpace. These sales offer a great opportunity to shop while giving back to a local, nonprofit organization.
While you’re at the Library, Flyleaf Bakery Café gift cards are a delicious option for your gifting needs. They make wonderful gifts for teachers, coaches and tutors; your neighbors and coworkers; and host and hostess gifts. Plus, you can feel good knowing you’re supporting a local, woman-owned small business.
Stop by the Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave., to see how we can make the holiday season a little brighter for you and your family.

Et Tu, Brutus? The Spirit of Batavia
By popular request, let’s take a closer look at the origins of Batavia’s Bulldogs, featured recently in Kane County Magazine and The Batavian. Batavia’s famous bulldog first appeared in the mid-1940s, but Batavia High School had other nicknames as early as 1932.
Long before Batavia’s athletic teams were called the Bulldogs, they were the Vikings. (Yes, it’s true!) Perhaps the name was inspired by the Independent Order of Vikings, active in Batavia since 1904, or the predominance of boys of Swedish descent on the football field and basketball court. The Vikings name was prevalent in the Batavia Herald and Geneva Republican beginning with the 1932-1933 school year. In a special edition of the East High Auroran (March 9, 1933), which served as a program for the district basketball tournament, Batavia was the only team with a nickname: Vikings.
probably disliked the name, and the lack of a yearbook from 1918-1944 probably hurt the cause.
Perhaps the last reference to the Batavia Vikings in the Batavia Herald occurred in November 1938:
“The monicker [sic] ‘Vikings,’ which for many years has been the label used by sportswriters when identifying Batavia athletic teams, is about as appropriate this year as the ‘Fighting Irish’ title is to Notre Dame …. Most of this year’s high school heavyweight football eleven was composed of students claiming German and English descent …. Arnie Stenman was the only ‘Viking’ to play a major role.”
Ironically, the team was called the “Crimson tide” in the sports section of the same edition.
Why Bulldogs? Paul W. “Peeler” Bergeson Jr., a 1945 Batavia graduate as well as football captain and class president, noted that Coach Howard J. Lester (1944 -1948) had arrived in Batavia and desired a nickname. The Vikings name had fallen into disuse and was picked up by Geneva (circa 1942-1943). Peeler recalled that the Bulldogs name was chosen by a student vote, though no such records have survived.
The first known reference to “Batavia bulldogs” occurred in the Batavia Herald on Feb. 16, 1945. The name appeared for the first time in the 1946 Echo (for the 1945-1946 school year). In November 1967, the bulldog officially was named Brutus in a contest won by Diane Schroeder, then a junior at Batavia High School.
1949: Cover of a commercially produced student scrapbook, which was owned by a member of the Class of 1949.
The Vikings name appeared less frequently after Batavia dropped football in 1934 (for three seasons) and, by the late 1930s, the Batavia Herald regularly referred to the team as the Crimson — occasionally in combination with other monikers, such as Crimson tide and Crimson tigers. We only can speculate why the Vikings name fell out of favor. Alvin W. Sager, a 1937 Batavia graduate, suggested two possible reasons: East Siders — mostly not Swedish —

The Eastland Disaster R
Wednesday, Nov. 16, 7 p.m. | In person
It has been called “America’s Forgotten Tragedy.” This ship sank before it even left the Chicago River on July 24, 1915, and killed 844 people! It is one of the worst disasters in American history and hardly anyone knows about it. Our presenter, John Boda, has researched the Eastland Disaster in great detail and presents many interesting facts, stories, and pictures. He also has a very personal connection: His grandmother and two great aunts were on board at the time. He has produced two videos on this event and continues involvement in the annual memorial.

KIM'S TIPS & TRICKS
Early November is your last chance to get spring bulbs in the ground. When planting the bulbs, plant three times as deep as their largest dimension.
When cleaning up your garden, leave some (not diseased) plant material in place to help hold the soil. You can even add mulched leaves from your yard to help prevent soil erosion in your beds.

Give a charitable gift this holiday season through CFFRV
If you’re looking to make a charitable gift before the end of the year, consider a gift to the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley (CFFRV) or one of the many funds it administers. Maybe you have considered making a gift in memory of a loved one or creating a memorial fund that will carry their legacy. To make a memorial donation to a CFFRV Fund, visit Donate – Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley (cffrv.org) and learn about various types of funds and the ways
you can impact your community. Interested in starting a memorial fund of your own? Visit Creating My Own Fund – Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley (cffrv.org). There are many options including some of our most popular ones such as DonorAdvised Funds and Scholarship Funds. We’d love to help you discuss your options. Please contact our President and CEO, Julie Christman, at jchristman@cffrv.org or 331-208-9428, with any questions you may have or to begin a conversation.
Batavia United Way hosting holiday Adopt-A-Family
In keeping with tradition, BUW will again partner with the community to provide Christmas to Batavia families in need.
Last year, we recruited over 80 sponsors to provide gifts for 145 families, which included more than 275 kids!
We expect the need to be just as great this year. BPS101 staff identify the families who are in need of help, and sponsors shop from wish lists completed by the family. BUW also partners with area clubs who provide supplemental items such as gift cards, groceries, Christmas stockings, and more.
For information on sponsoring a family or other opportunities to make the season bright, visit us at bataviaunitedway.org/adopt-family.
Trivia Night to benefit Batavia Rotary’s PolioPlus Foundation
CASA Kane County is looking for more volunteers to help support children who need it through the foster care system. A CASA/GAL can truly “Change a Child’s Story” and create an environment that is supportive, structured, and secure while providing emotional support, love and care.
CASA Kane County is a nonprofit volunteer organization advocating for the best interest of children
in abuse and neglect situations throughout Northern Illinois. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates/ Guardian ad Litem) volunteers are specially trained to become the objective voice of a child for a judge. Want more information about volunteering for CASA? To learn more and "Change a Child’s Story," please visit www.casakanecounty.org or call 630-232-4484.
While many of us were not alive during the Polio pandemic, the threat is very real for those old enough to remember it. Cases among unvaccinated people have recently brought Polio back into the news. Did you know that Rotary has led the fight to eradicate Polio since 1979? Our efforts have reduced the caseload from 1,000 cases per day in 1980 to less than 30 total cases worldwide in 2021. Join us at Enticing Cuisine on Saturday, Nov. 19, for a Trivia Night benefiting Rotary’s PolioPlus Foundation. The fun starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $50. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will donate $2 for every dollar raised. Visit www.BataviaRotaryClub.org for more information.
