Message from the City
reetings,
I had the experience of providing a short welcome address to the thousands of attendees gathered around Engstrom Family Park on Millview Drive at 9:30 p.m. 4th of July evening to begin the 72nd annual firing of Batavia's Fireworks program. Once I finished my short speech, in what will be an unforgettable moment of bad luck history in our town, it was quickly learned that the technology equipment installed by the fireworks company to fire off the show had developed internal tech issues and was unable to proceed! A sense of disappointment quickly spread throughout the West Main Street neighborhood and was felt by all those in attendance.
It has been a true tribute to the spirit of patriotism and pride in our town that numerous residents have stepped up and offered encouragement for the show to "go on" once the technology issues had been resolved by the fireworks firm hired to manage the fireworks. As many old-time residents will recall, the creation of this show came in 1950 from an idea put forth by the late Harold Peterson, an active member of Batavia's volunteer fire department, who suggested to then Fire Chief Fred “Bud" Richter that community donations be sought to buy fireworks and fire off a patriotic message on July 4th in the night sky over our town. From that moment moving forward, this exercise of admiration for our nation has become an annual event that thousands of residents and visitors have attended year after year. And yes, thanks to Harold Peterson’s original idea the money needed to pay for the effort has annually come from donations of local residents and businesses – so now there has been a 72-year run of national pride to celebrate.
During the long history of this community event, actual management of our fireworks show has shifted from the Batavia Fire Department to an all-volunteer citizen group, with support from the city staff, who each year spend countless hours planning and working towards producing the Fireworks and Sky Concert. The citizen committee oversees all aspects of the show, from hiring a professional crew, to setting up and firing the show, to finding food vendors and other volunteers to oversee a variety of tasks needed to bring thousands of residents out to Engstrom Family Park. How blessed Batavia is to enjoy a wonderful tradition.
The Fireworks Committee had to work intensely to find a new date to reschedule this year’s 4th of July Fireworks show. There were a number of factors to work around, including activities in the surrounding area such as football season at Batavia High School where they had to be careful not to pick a date that conflicts with this popular program. Aug. 5 was selected.
On another story with a Batavia connection, I want to express our community condolences to the family of Richard Biondi, the memorable radio disc jockey whose voice became familiar to countless radio listeners over his 67-year career on five different radio stations. For many Batavians, listening to Dick Biondi on his nightly program brought rock ‘n’ roll music into the rest of their lives. In a Batavia appearance to celebrate the remodeling of the Batavia Jewel Store, Biondi was greeted by hundreds of fans from our community. It was at that occasion that he shared with me the insight that his wife’s family included several well-known Batavia residents. At this occasion I presented Biondi with a framed city proclamation honoring his work including the playing of numerous songs performed by singer Jackie DeShannon, who also has a Batavia background. I have later been told by those folks with family connections to him, that the Batavia Proclamation was very special to him and that he frequently talked about how welcomed he felt he was in our town.

Prairie Street and Wilson Street Intersection Improvements
CONSTRUCTION IN SPRING 2024
The intersection of Prairie Street and Wilson Street has experienced heavy traffic congestion during peak hours, causing delays and safety concerns for drivers and pedestrians. A preliminary engineering study showed that a traffic signal at this intersection is warranted as well as capacity improvements including additional turn lanes.
The intersection project will include traffic signalization, pavement widening, new left-hand turn lanes, and pedestrian actuators on each leg of the intersection. Pavement will either be reconstructed or resurfaced within the project limits with new concrete curb and gutter. Sidewalks will be replaced within most of the project limits along South Prairie Street and portions of Wilson Street. The proposed design
and engineering plans will include the improvements required to interconnect the new traffic signal to the existing traffic signal interconnect system located at Wilson Street and Route 25 and throughout the downtown Wilson Street corridor. Utility work will include improvements to the storm sewer system and complete replacement of the water main within the construction limits. Part of the challenge to this project will be the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) railway single track which crosses both Prairie and Wilson Street just east of Prairie Street. Because of the proposed traffic signal and BNSF track crossings railroad protective devices will need to be upgraded. In conjunction with the new traffic signal, pre-signals will be installed south of the crossing on Prairie Street.
Deadline approaching for 2024
Roadway gates and flashers will be installed at all quadrants of the crossings in advance of the crossings in all directions.
The intersection improvement project at Prairie Street and Wilson Street is an essential project for the City of Batavia.
The city was expecting to start the construction in fall 2023 however now the City is expecting to start construction in March/April 2024. The project is slated to be completed in November 2024. City staff appreciates your patience and understanding during the construction process, and they will do their best to minimize any inconvenience to our community.

REPORT A SIDEWALK IN NEED OF REPAIR
Each year the City of Batavia performs maintenance to repair its sidewalks. These repairs ensure pedestrian safety as well as reduce liability for property owners and the City.
The timeline for those repairs begins in the fall. Residents and businesses are asked to report sidewalk issues by Oct. 31. City staff then reviews these requests to determine if they qualify for repair and if so, repairs are typically scheduled for the following construction season.
Sidewalk repairs and replacement are completed by the city at no additional cost to residents and/or businesses.
To be considered for repair, sidewalks must have one or more of the following conditions:
• Walks must be sunken or risen to a height difference of 1 inch or more between two sidewalk panels.
• The sidewalk panel is broken or separated into three or more pieces.
• 50% or more of the surface has deteriorated.
To report a sidewalk you believe is in need of repair and meets one of the above criteria, call the Engineering Department at 630-454-2750. A

2023 Street Program and Sidewalk Remove and Replacement Is Underway
The City has three parking lots, City Hall west, Public Works and 18 S. River Street, on the list for improvements this season along with various sidewalk locations and streets throughout Batavia. To find the list of locations visit cityofbatavia.gov. All construction should be completed by the end of October.
Halloween Safety Tips
Everything you need to know to keep your kids safe on Halloween
Everyone loves a good scare on Halloween, but not when it comes to child safety. There are several easy and effective behaviors that parents can share with kids to help reduce their risk of injury, courtesy of Safe Kids Worldwide and the Batavia Fire Department. For more information visit safekids.org.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/230901145533-27e97a689bbe019cf6de07d239431ea4/v1/b9c9c8558d237bb15f54ed6d2b8e1799.jpeg)
WALK SAFELY
• Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks.
• Look left, right and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross.
• Put electronic devices down and keep heads up and walk, don’t run, across the street.
• Teach children to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them.
• Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible. Children should walk on direct routes with the fewest street crossings.
• Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Teach children to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.
GO TRICK-OR-TREATING WITH AN ADULT
• Children under the age of 12 should not be alone at night without adult supervision. If kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, remind them to stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or- treat in groups.
KEEP COSTUMES BOTH CREATIVE AND SAFE
• Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors.
• Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision.
• Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers. When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls.
DRIVE EXTRA SAFELY
• Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways.
• Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs.
• Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully.
• Eliminate any distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings.
• Drive slowly, anticipate heavy pedestrian traffic and turn your headlights on earlier in the day to spot children from greater distances.
• Batavia’s trick-or-treating hours are 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. so be especially alert for kids during those hours.
• On average, children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year.
Tips from batavia police department
PROTECT YOURSELF FROM BURGLARIES AND SCAMS
The Batavia Police Department has received reports of car burglaries recently across the City. Here are helpful tips to reduce the chances of being a victim of burglary:
n Lock vehicle doors. Most car burglaries are crimes of opportunity as burglars look for the path of least resistance and easy targets.
n Do not leave valuables (including car keys) in your vehicle. If your vehicle is locked, and nothing of value is visible inside, it is less likely for a burglar to force entry into your vehicle.
n Park your vehicle in a garage if possible. Make sure to close and lock the garage door. If your vehicle is parked outside, remove the garage door opener from the vehicle to prevent unlawful entry into your garage or home.
n Consider installing lighting or motion-activated lighting in the areas where your vehicles are parked.
n Consider installing security cameras in the area where you park your vehicle. Although cameras may not prevent a criminal from burglarizing your vehicle, video of the event may help police identify criminals.
n Immediately report suspicious persons or activity you observe to police, particularly in hours or darkness when most car burglaries occur.
The Batavia Police Department has taken several reports of citizens being victimized by scammers that convince victims to deposit money into cryptocurrency machines, like BitCoin, and transfer the funds to the criminal. These scams often begin with an email, phone call, or text message from the offender, telling the victim there is some urgent action that needs to be
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/230901145533-27e97a689bbe019cf6de07d239431ea4/v1/f3e0a86c66a1416e316f1ee149ae86db.jpeg)
taken. Although these occurrences are underreported, when they do occur, victims have reported losses in thousands of dollars. Law enforcement has limited means to track cryptocurrency funds and have them returned to victims. Oftentimes scammers are out of state or in other countries. Frequently, victims of these types of scams are seniors. Here are tips to help avoid being a victim of these scams:
n Scrutinize your email and text messages. Oftentimes, scammers will send an email that looks like it is coming from your bank or another entity that you do business with. If an email is advising you to take action such as click on a link, or call a specific phone number, consider contacting the business directly with the contact information you already have to verify the message. Be aware that scammers can very easily “spoof” their phone number to look like they are calling from a legitimate entity. Do not trust that your caller ID is giving you accurate information on the caller.
n If you receive a message or phone call from an individual advising you need to make an urgent payment, be wary of any payment request by unusual means: gift cards, BitCoin, Western Union, etc. Businesses and government entities will not ask for, nor will accept these types of payments.
n Have conversations with senior members of your family about these types of scams. Encourage them to contact police if questionable circumstances arise.
n If you believe you are being targeted by a scammer, call the police. Batavia Police will be happy to help determine if the situation is a likely scam or not.
Preparation Tips Autumn
Now is the time to make sure homes and families are ready for the upcoming holidays and winter weather both indoors and out. Check out some tips and tricks for getting your home and family ready for anything.
• Check your emergency supplies. Replace any items that are expired or have been used. If you don't have an emergency kit, build one. Directions and a checklist can be found at: www.ready.illinois.gov.
• Test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors for proper function. If needed, replace the batteries.
• Check the seals on doors and windows. Repair or replace weather stripping to prevent drafts and save energy.
• Have fireplaces and chimneys inspected. If needed, have your chimney swept to prevent potential fire hazards.
• Clean your gutters. Leaves and debris buildup can damage roofs and homes.
• Inspect your roof for loose shingles and damage.
• Practice ladder safety and proper usage. Fall prevention lets you and your family enjoy all seasons.
• Be careful when doing yardwork. Use rakes that are the right length and wear eye and hearing protection when needed. Hydrate and apply sunscreen. It's easy to over-exert when temperatures are moderate.
Keeping your home and family safe and healthy gives everyone the best chance at a fun and active autumn.

Residential leaf collection programs offer 2 options for fall yard cleanup
There are two leaf collection programs available to qualifying residents who pay the monthly leaf/ brush fee on their utility bills.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/230901145533-27e97a689bbe019cf6de07d239431ea4/v1/c9bfc0aaa12386cdf892343f3da5ed71.jpeg)
CURBSIDE VACUUM COLLECTION
Curbside vacuum collection provides every resident with up to three collection opportunities, weather permitting.
Updates showing daily progress will be posted online at cityofbatavia.net once the program is underway. Dates may change due to the weather and volume of leaves put out for collection, although best efforts will be made to remain on schedule. Snow or freezing weather may significantly delay or permanently halt curbside leaf collection, since some of the equipment used to remove leaves is also used to handle deicing/ snowplowing operations.
How the curbside vacuum collection program works:
• Rake leaves to the parkway by 6 a.m. on the Monday of your scheduled week. Leaves will be collected rain or shine.
• Crews will make one pass by every qualifying residence during each collection period. Leaves that are placed out after the collection crew has passed by may not be picked up for another two weeks until the next scheduled pickup date.
• Leaves should be raked into piles no farther than 6 feet back from the curb. Raking leaves into a long windrow will expedite the process. Leaf piles should be in the parkway, as equipment cannot be used in alleys.
• Leaves should not be raked into the street. This will obstruct the flow of storm water runoff during rain events and cause street flooding, as well as slippery streets.
• Avoid placing leaves near obstacles such as parked vehicles, mailboxes, utility poles/boxes, hydrants, trees, or signposts.
• Avoid placing debris like sticks, bags, and plastic bottles in leaf piles, as this can cause injury to personnel, damage equipment, and cause delays. Foreign objects also contaminate the leaf material, which is taken to an agricultural site.
• The program is intended to collect most leaves residents may have during the curbside vacuum collection program time frame. Residents are encouraged to use other options for leaves that drop after the curbside vacuum collection program has finished for the season.
• Various crews are working simultaneously during the program period. Trucks with large vacuum trailers are used for through streets, and a truck with a small trailer vacuum goes into areas where the larger equipment cannot navigate such as cul-de-sacs and dead ends.
• Limbs/brush should be placed in a separate pile for collection and may not be combined with leaf piles.
Limbs/brush should only be placed at the curb if there is a scheduled collection. The final citywide brush collection will be done the week of Nov. 27 for both sides of town.
• Ornamental grasses, plants, and corn stalks should be disposed of as yard waste.
LEAF BAG COLLECTION PROGRAM
• From Dec. 1-31, residents may place leaves in brown Kraft yard waste bags and put them out for collection on their scheduled refuse collection day without a sticker. The refuse collection company will collect yard waste bags (no cans) weekly until Dec. 31.
• Only leaves may be placed in the yard waste bags. No grass or other yard waste can be mixed with the leaves. Please try to keep the yard waste bags as dry as possible.
ALTERNATE OPTIONS
• Use a mulching lawnmower and mulch leaves back into the lawn. This provides nutrients for the soil.
• Place leaves around plant beds and under trees and shrubs. This enhances the soil and provides insulation for the plants.
• Stickered yard waste bags/cans will be collected weekly on your scheduled refuse collection day through Nov.30.
If you have any questions about the leaf programs, please call the Street Division of Batavia Public Works at 630-454-2400. Residents can also visit cityofbatavia.net for the latest updates to the schedule and to view a progress map that is updated daily.
Brush collection ongoing through November
Curbside residential brush collection is available to all residents who pay the monthly leaf/brush fee on their utility bill. Please note that the interval between collection dates has changed, so your collection week doesn’t occur the same week each month; there are still seven collections per season. Brush/limbs are to be at the curb for collection no later than 7 a.m. on Monday of your scheduled week, but no sooner than the weekend before that. Crews will make only one pass by each residence. Brush placed out after our crews have passed will not be collected until the next scheduled pickup date.
The amount of brush that has been placed out citywide in any given month dictates how quickly your area will be reached, but each side of town is typically completed by Friday of the scheduled week. The collections are intended to handle most minor storm damage limbs that fall during the season, and special collections are done very rarely. Major storms may affect the schedule, and a notice of any special brush collection will be posted on the City’s website. If your brush was out at 7 a.m. on Monday of your scheduled collection week and not collected by the end of the workday on Friday, please notify the Public Properties & Services Division at 630-454-2400 no later than the following Monday.
The following procedures must be followed to ensure the collection of your brush:
• Maximum diameter is 6 inches (logs cannot be split); maximum length of limbs is 12 feet.

• Brush should be stacked into one large pile in the front/side parkway with cut ends facing the curb, and placed away from parkway trees, mailboxes, utility poles/boxes, hydrants, and parked vehicles. Brush will not be collected from alleys or vacant lots.
• Brush/limbs must not be tied, bundled, in containers, bagged, or put on the street.
• Brush pile should contain only brush. Foreign objects will not be collected.
• Program is for residentially generated brush only, not contractor tree removals or trimming.
• Brush left out on the parkway between collection dates is subject to a possible code violation citation.
For materials that do not meet the above specifications:
• Groot Industries collects yard waste bags/32-gallon cans (not to exceed 50 pounds per bag/32-gallon can) consisting of twigs, evergreen clippings, roots, stumps, and plants on your regular trash collection day through November 30. A refuse sticker should be attached to the yard waste bag or 32-gallon can. If a can is used, it should be clearly marked, “Yard Waste” on the side facing the street.
• Residents with limbs/brush exceeding the requirements for the program can contact a private service to have it removed at the resident’s expense.
• Residents in unincorporated homes should contact their township offices regarding brush collection services that may be available to them.
If you have any questions, please call the Public Properties & Services Division at 630-454-2400 weekdays from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. or visit our website at cityofbatavia.net/brushcollection.

Household Hazardous Waste Front Door Collection
The City of Batavia offers a Household Hazardous waste collection service to its residents. The city’s third-party provider, Clean Harbors Environmental Services, Inc., will provide front door collection of many items that should not be placed in the regular weekly refuse collection. To learn about the items that will be accepted, please visit cityofbatavia.net/ hazardouswaste or call Clean Harbors Environmental Services, Inc. at 866-4665060 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. to request
a pickup or visit cleanharbors.formstack. com/forms/kane_hhw_pick_up_request. Each household will be allowed to use the program once each calendar year. The eligible areas include residences within Batavia’s corporate boundaries. Each collection is limited to 70 pounds or less. Residents are encouraged to combine items with neighbors to come as close to the maximum weight as possible, because the City must pay a set fee whether the collection is one pound or 70 pounds.

The people behind the names
Batavia Schools Edition
Expand your knowledge of Batavia schools at the Batavia Depot Museum’s new exhibit, “What’s in a Name? Batavia Schools Edition.” Discover the intricate stories of schools named after historic educators such as Bill Wood, Grace McWayne, Eldora Hoover and Sam Rotolo.

This informative exhibit gives insight into Batavia’s early education system through photographs and compelling stories. It offers visitors a “fresh look” at many recognizable Batavia names that are forever enshrined in our beloved school communities, said Batavia Depot Museum Director Kate Garrett.
“Batavia tradition is to name schools not after powerful politicians or philanthropists, but after the workingclass principals and teachers who
dedicated their lives to the kids and families of this city,” she said.
“Many others don't know much about these remarkable people or the quiet dedication that made them community icons,” Garrett added. The exhibit features fast facts about what these people did that made them so special, and a true story about each one.
Fun artifacts will help illustrate the stories, Garrett said, such as a desk from the old Louise White School and even scrapbooks from early 20th century Batavia High School graduates.
“If you've never been to the museum before, this is a great way to get a taste of what really makes the Batavia spirit so special,” Garrett said.
The exhibit runs through Nov. 19. Admission is free.

an event like this in the area, so this is a great local opportunity to enjoy a brewfest,” said Nathaniel Jarosz, Batavia Park District Athletic Supervisor and event organizer. “Beer lovers have the opportunity to experience a wide variety of breweries’ beers, converse with representatives from each brewery and talk with other like-minded beer lovers about their experience, stories and adventures.”
VIP ticket holders get early access to the Pints event an hour early to get a head start on the tastings.
“VIP attendees at last year’s event appreciated the extra hour of time to peruse the craft beer choices,” Jarosz said. “That extra time made all the difference in reaching every vendor they wanted to try.”

New Peace on Earth sign to be unveiled at ribbon cutting

Batavia’s Peace Bridge next to the Jeffery D. Schielke Government Center has become so iconic that people from all over the Chicago area flock to it to take Instagrammable photos with it as a backdrop.
In 2008, Craig Foltos, lifelong Batavian and business owner, proposed the concept of “Peace on Earth” lettering for the bridge during the holidays and donated the 12-foot wooden letters. In 2022, the Batavia Park Board voted to keep the message up year-round, however, the 14-year-old letters were showing signs of wear.
Batavia Peace Day 2023
• Thursday, Sept. 21, 4-7:30 p.m.
• Batavia Peace Bridge and Batavia Riverwalk, South Plaza
• More details at bataviaparks.org/ Batavia-parks-foundation
Last year, Foltos and the Batavia Parks Foundation led community fundraising efforts to replace the wooden letters with a set of year-round permanent, sustainable LED-lit letters. They will be installed in late summer.
The community is invited to celebrate their installation with a park district ribbon cutting at the bridge on Sept. 21, International Peace Day. This observance urges everyone across
the world to put aside differences and focus on building a culture of peace.
The park district and parks foundation will team up to celebrate Batavia Peace Day, featuring sound healing and yoga, live music and activities.
The Peace Bridge ribbon cutting will be at 7 p.m. The event ends with a community sing-along and luminaria lighting along the bridge.

TIPS & TRICKS KIM'S
Leave up the flower stalks with seed heads for the birds. Migrating birds appreciate the food and it is vital for those species that remain over winter in your area. It’s less work for you, and the birds make your garden a more interesting place throughout the winter. The only exception would be to clean up any plant that has battled disease this year.

This year, the ALA is partnering with Disney and Pixar in the wake of their successful animated film, “Elemental,” which follows the journeys of a fiery young woman, named Ember, and a go-with-the-flow kind of guy, named Wade. This unlikely pair live in Element City, where the Fire, Water, Earth and Air residents live together and discover that, despite their differences, they have a lot in common. We all can relate.
Library cards unlock access to incredible worlds, new and popular technology, an array of multimedia content, and educational programming that empowers as much as it informs and entertains. Libraries play an important role in educating children and developing their minds by offering a variety of programs that spark creativity and forge an interest in reading and learning. A library card gives students the tools they need to succeed, not just in the classroom, but throughout their lives.
Signing up for a library card is just the first step on the path to academic achievement and lifelong learning.
The Library will be closed:
• Sunday, Sept. 3
• Monday, Sept. 4
Library Hours
Monday-Thursday: 9 a.m.-9 p.m.

Under the Cupola
Hello, Batavia community!
I'm thrilled to be your new executive director at the Batavia Public Library District! I'm incredibly impressed by our dedicated staff, who bring exceptional programs and services to the community every day. As a parent of four, I spent countless hours at the library with my kids, and I'm proud to have raised strong readers with curious minds.
I understand the busy schedule of a library director, but always make time to connect with our staff, explore the facility and observe our programs in action. It's amazing to see how people engage with the library and I love to watch children explore and learn. My kids are excited to visit their mom in her new "digs" and experience the Batavia Public Library for themselves.
To get to know each other better, I invite you to our "Meet the Director" events this fall:
• 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9
• 11 a.m.-noon Wednesday, Sept. 13
• 5-6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14
Join me in the Elizabeth Hall Conference Room during one of these times. I would love to meet you.
I'm eager to work with the Batavia community and continue providing exceptional library services. Let's make the Batavia Public Library District an even more remarkable place for everyone. See you soon!

CHIP IN BATAVIA
Community Helpers Impacting People In Need
Our mission is to support students and families in BPS101 who are homeless (temporary housing) or on free/reduced lunch. We ensure families that are facing financial obstacles receive help to meet their needs and that students have all they need to succeed in school and can participate in activities available to all students. We work very fast to get what is needed. We have a CHIP IN liaison at each school to work with staff, administration and families. We are all volunteers.
We are a restricted fund under The Batavia Foundation for Educational Excellence, a 501(c)(3), and they act as our administrator.

In our 11th year, we can do so much because of the generosity of our community. If you want to help, we
would be so grateful. Donations can be dropped off at BPS101 office, 335 W. Wilson, at the front desk, open 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Ways to help:
• Check our Facebook page for current needs: CHIP IN Batavia.
• Check our website for information: chipinbatavia.org.
• Donate gift cards to Aldi, Walmart, Walgreens, Goodwill, Target, Kohl's, Plato’s Closet, any local gas station, or shoe store.
• Individually wrapped snacks (no peanuts!).
• Personal care items: soap, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, feminine hygiene, toothbrushes/toothpaste, brushes/combs, Kleenex, razors.
• Volunteer to join list of helpers who
can pick up and deliver furniture donations
• Cars! We are often looking for donations of cars for families – we work with local auto shops that discount services to fix cars.
• Share rentals you know about … we have helped with over 120 rent payments since COVID-19, and we are always looking for lower cost rentals for our families.

While many of us were not alive during the polio pandemic, the threat is very real for those old enough to remember it. Cases among unvaccinated people have recently brought polio back into the news. Did you know that Rotary has led the fight to eradicate polio since 1979? Our efforts have reduced caseload from 1,000 cases per day in 1980 to less than 10 total cases worldwide so far in 2023. Join us at Enticing Cuisine on Saturday, Nov. 11 for a Trivia Night benefiting Rotary’s PolioPlus Foundation. The fun starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $50. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will donate $2 for every dollar raised. Visit www.BataviaRotaryClub.org for more information.

Building Stronger Communities, One Volunteer Connection at a Time.
FVSRA Connects is a new program for families, participants with disabilities, and local businesses in the Fox Valley interested in volunteering and building connections. The program supports long-term community sustainability with a short-term infusion of volunteers.
Interested in volunteering with FVSRA? We host opportunities throughout the year that would not be possible without volunteers. We welcome individuals,
community groups, and businesses to volunteer with us.
Interested in having FVSRA participants with disabilities volunteer for you? FVSRA participants with disabilities volunteer countless hours throughout the community from helping with mailings, to planting flowers or beautifying the community, and more! Learn more at www.fvsra.org.
Exciting news for students! The application for the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley’s 2024 Scholarship Program will be available in October. If you know a high school senior, student in an undergraduate or graduate program, or attending trade school, please let them know about this incredible opportunity. To be eligible, students must live in our service area and attend an accredited post-secondary institution within the United States of America on a full-time basis.
There is only one application to be considered for multiple awards. Applications will be due in early 2024. Students are encouraged to plan ahead to request a letter of recommendation, complete essay questions and more. For more information on the program, please visit cffrv.org/scholarship-program.
