Celebrating Mom Adelynn McQuaig gets a jump start on a Mother’s Day gift for her mom by participating in Saturday’s Kids Containers for Mother’s Day event hosted at Hornbaker Gardens in rural Princeton.

Area businesses around Bureau County are offering special Mother’s Day gifts and opportunities, ranging from flowers and candy, to massages and fitness classes, dinner specials and more. Homemade cards and poems are always another option and are almost certain to find a place on the front of the family refrigerator. Regardless of the gift chosen for this Mother’s Day on Sunday, Bureau County residents of all ages are encouraged to remember their mothers, as well as other important women in their lives, with words of appreciation and love.

Mother’s Day: May 12, 2013 The driving force behind Mother’s Day was Anna Jarvis, who organized observances in Grafton, W.Va., and Philadelphia on May 10, 1908. As the annual celebration became popular around the country, Jarvis asked members of Congress to set aside a day to honor mothers. She succeeded in 1914, when Congress designated the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. Here are some statistics about mothers and Mother’s Day, as provided by the U.S. Census Bureau.

• 4.1 million - Number of women between the ages of 15 and 50 who gave birth in the past 12 months.

• 53 percent - Percentage of 15- to 44-year-old women who were mothers in 2010.

• 81 percent - Percentage of women who had become mothers by age 40 to 44 as of 2010. In 1976, 90 percent of women in that age group had given birth.

• 2,449 - The total fertility rate or estimated number of total births per 1,000 women in Utah in 2010 (based on current birth rates by age), which led the nation. At the other end of the spectrum is Rhode Island, with a total fertility rate of 1,630.5 births per 1,000 women.

• 20 percent - Percentage of all women age 15 to 44 who have had two children. About 47 percent had no children, 17 percent had one, 10 percent had three and about 5 percent had four or more.

• 89.7 percent - Percentage of all children who lived with their biological mothers in 2012. About 1.2 percent of all children lived with a stepmother.

• 3.954 million - Number of births registered in the United States in 2011. Of this number, 329,797 were to teens 15 to 19 and 7,651 to women age 45 to 49.

• 25.4 - Average age of women in 2010 when they gave birth for the first time, up from 25.2 years in 2009. The increase in the mean age from 2009 to 2010 reflects, in part, the relatively large decline in births to women under age 25.

• 29.2 percent - The percentage of mothers who had given birth in the past 12 months who had a bachelor’s degree or higher and 84 percent of mothers have at least a high school diploma.

• Jacob and Sophia - The most popular baby names for boys and girls, respectively, in 2011.

• 68 - Number of births in the past year per 1,000 women age 15 to 50 with a graduate or professional degree. The number was 57 per 1,000 for women whose highest level of education was a bachelor’s degree.

• 5 million - Number of stay-at-home moms in 2012 — statistically unchanged from 2009, 2010 and 2011— down from 5.3 million in 2008. In

2012, 24 percent of married-couple family groups with children under 15 had a stay-at-home mother, up from 21 percent in 2000. In 2007, before the recession, stay-at-home mothers were found in 24 percent of married-couple family groups with children under 15, not statistically different from the percentage in 2012.

Compared with other moms, stay-at-home moms in 2007 were more likely: • Younger (44 percent were under age 35, compared with 38 percent of mothers in the labor force).

• Hispanic (27 percent, compared with 16 percent of mothers in the labor force).

• Foreign-born (34 percent, compared with 19 percent of mothers in the labor force).

• Living with a child under age 5 (57 percent, compared with 43 percent of mothers in the labor force).

• Without a high school diploma (19 percent versus 8 percent of mothers in the labor force).

• 827,907 - Number of child care centers across the country in 2010. These included 75,695 child day care services employing 859,416 workers and another 752,212 self-employed people or other businesses without paid employees. Many mothers turn to these centers to help juggle motherhood and careers.

• 62.1 percent - Percentage of women age 16 to 50 who had a birth in the past 12 months who were in the labor force.

• 10.3 million - The number of single mothers living with children younger than 18 in 2012, up from 3.4 million in 1970.

• 5.9 million - Number of custodial mothers who were owed child support in 2009.

• 36 percent - Percentage of births in the past 12 months that were to women age 15 to 50 who were unmarried (including divorced, widowed and never married women).

In 2011, 407,873 mothers who had a birth in the past 12 months were living with a cohabiting partner.

• 16,182 - Number of florist establishments nationwide in 2010. The 70,575 employees in floral shops across our nation will be especially busy preparing, selling and delivering floral arrangements for Mother’s Day. • 10,258 - Number of employees of the 103 greeting-card publishing establishments in 2010.

• 14,654 - The number of cosmetics, beauty supplies and perfume stores nationwide in 2010.

Perfume is a popular gift given on Mother’s Day. • 23,739 - Number of jewelry stores in the United States in 2010 — the place to purchase necklaces, earrings and other timeless pieces for Mom.

PRINCETON — Perry Memorial Hospital in Princeton will offer a free monthly blood pressure and blood sugar screen the second Tuesday of each month.

The next screening will be Tuesday. These screens are open to the public and will be held from 8 to 9:30 a.m. in the Main Lobby at PMH. Those wishing to have their blood sugar checked should fast 12 hours before the screen.

Diabetes meeting PRINCETON — Perry Memorial Hospital in Princeton provides information and support to those dealing with diabetes, on the second Tuesday of each month, at an informational meeting to provide up-to-date guidelines and realistic ways to manage the diagnosis of diabetes. Benefit LADD — The fourth annual “Texas B.B.Q.” will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 17, at the Ladd Community Building. Here are a few important items about Social Security retirement benefits and how to apply for them.

When you work and pay Social Security taxes, you earn “credits” toward Social Security benefits. If you were born in 1929 or later, you need 40 credits (10 years of work) to qualify for retirement benefits.

We determine the amount of your benefit by both how long you work and how much you earn. The higher your lifetime earnings, the higher your monthly

benefits. If there were some years when you did not work or had low earnings, your benefit amount may be lower than if you had worked steadily or earned more.

Your age at the time you start receiving Social Security retirement makes a difference in your benefit amount. The full retirement age (the age at which 100 percent of retirement benefits are payable) has been gradually rising from age 65 to age 67. You can take “early retirement” as early as age 62, but if you start collecting benefits before you reach your full retirement age, your monthly payment will be

reduced. You can find out what your full retirement age is by referring to the convenient chart at www.socialsecurity. gov/retire2/retirechart. htm Just as you can choose an early retirement and get a reduced payment, you also can choose to keep working beyond your full retirement age to take advantage of a larger payment. Generally, your benefit will increase automatically by eight percent each year from the time you reach your full retirement age until you start receiving your benefits or until you reach age 70.

The decision of when to retire is personal and depends on a number of factors. To help you weigh the factors, we suggest you read our online fact sheet, When To Start Receiving Retirement Benefits, available at www.socialsecurity.gov/ pubs/10147.html.

Food court What a wonderful day to cook for or to plan and prepare a meal for your Mom or Grandma — a special meal you know they especially want, especially desire, especially deserve.

Cream of Potato Soup with Cheddar 8 1 1 2 1

medium Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and cubed large red onion, chopped celery rib, chopped 14 1/2-ounce cans chicken broth 10 1/4-ounce can condensed cream of celery soup, undiluted 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon white pepper 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese Optional toppings, salad croutons, crumbled cooked bacon and additional shredded sharp cheddar cheese Combine first seven ingredients in a 4- or 5-quart slow cooker. Cover and cook on low for 7 to 9 hours, until potatoes area tender. Stir in cheese and cream.

Cover and cook 30 minutes longer or until cheese is melted. Garnish servings with toppings of your choice.

Grape Salad 2 pounds seedless grapes, any color 8 ounces cream cheese 8 ounces sour cream 1/4 cup granulated sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup brown sugar 1 cup pecans Mix cream cheese, sour cream, vanilla and sugar until softened. Add grapes, mix gently. Add brown sugar on top dish with pecans. Refrigerate before serving.

Grandmas Scalloped Corn 1 celery rib, chopped 1/2 small onion, chopped 2 tablespoons, butter 1 14 3/4-ounce can cream style corn 1 cup milk 1 cup crushed saltines (about 20 saltines) 2/3 cup cubed Velveeta 2 eggs 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon paprika In a small skillet, sauté celery and onion in butter until tender. Transfer to a large bowl, cool to room temperature. Stir in the corn, milk, saltines, cheese, eggs and salt. Transfer to a greased 1 1/2-quart baking dish. Sprinkle with paprika. Cover and bake at 350° for 45 minutes or until golden brown.

Sour Cream Chicken 1 2 2 2 2 2 1 1 1

cup reduced fat sour cream tablespoons minced chives tablespoons lemon juice teaspoons celery salt teaspoons paprika teaspoons Worcestershire sauce small garlic clove, minced 1/4 cups seasoned bread crumbs broiler/fryer chicken (2 to 3 pounds) cut up and skin removed 2 tablespoons butter, melted In a bowl, combine the first seven ingredients. Place crumbs in a separate shallow bowl. Coat chicken with sour cream mixture then coat with bread crumbs.

Arrange chicken on a rack in a foil-lined 15-by10-inch baking pan. Bake, uncovered, at 350° for 30 minutes. Drizzle with butter. Bake 15 to 20 minutes longer or until juices run clear.

Comforting Carrot Casserole 4 cups sliced fresh carrots 1 cup cubed Velveeta 2 tablespoon dried minced onion 1/4 cup butter, melted 1 cup crushed potato chips Place 1 inch of water in a large saucepan, add carrots. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat. Cover and simmer for 7 to 9 minutes or until crisp tender. Drain. Place carrots in a greased shallow 2-quart baking dish. Top with the cheese and onion. Drizzle with butter. Sprinkle with potato chips. Cover and bake at 350° for 20 to 25 minutes or until bubbly.

Cheesy Potato Cauliflower Mash 1 1/2 pounds baking potatoes 2 cups cauliflower florets 5 slices thick cut bacon 1/2 cup milk 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, divided Peel and cube potatoes. In saucepan, bring potatoes and enough salted water to cover to a boil. Reduce heat and add cauliflower florets. Let simmer 20 minutes or until tender. Drain. In skillet, over medium high heat, cook bacon 5 minutes. Cool. Crumble.

Drain all but 2 tablespoons fat from skillet. Add milk to skillet and bring to a boil. Using hand masher or potato ricer, mash vegetables, stir in hot milk, mash vegetables, stir in hot milk, 1/4 crumbled bacon and 1/4 cup cheese. Top with remaining bacon and cheese.

Vanilla Fruit Salad 1 1 2 2 1 1 3

pound fresh strawberries, quartered 1/2 cups seedless red and or green grapes, halved medium bananas, sliced kiwi fruit, peeled, sliced and quartered cup cubed fresh pineapple 21-ounce can peach pie filling teaspoons pure vanilla extract In a large bowl, combine the strawberries, grapes, bananas, kiwi and pineapple. Fold in pie filling and vanilla. Chill until serving. Makes 10 servings.

Beef Stroganoff 2 1 1 1 1 8 8

pounds beef stew meat cup onions, chopped can golden mushroom soup can cream of onion or mushroom soup 6-ounce jar sliced mushrooms, drained ounces cream cheese ounces sour cream Mix stew meat, onions, mushroom soup, cream of onion or mushroom soup and sliced mushrooms. Put in crock pot on low for 8 to 10 hours. Turn down to warm. Stir in cream cheese and sour cream. Serve on hot buttered noodles. Add a few parsley flakes.

Poke Cake 1 1 1 1 1

box white cake mix cup orange soda 3.2-ounce box vanilla instant pudding 1/2 cups milk 8-ounce tub Cool Whip Bake cake according to package instructions in a 9-by-13-inch pan. When cool poke holes all through the top of the cake with a butter knife or fork. Pour orange soda evenly over the top. Mix pudding and milk together until well blended. Fold in whipped topping until smooth. Spread pudding mixture over cake and store in the refrigerator until ready to serve. Instead of the orange soda you can also use Jell-O mixed up with water and pour over cake and get different colors.

Meat Loaf 1/2 cup Post Grape nut cereal 1 cup milk 1 15-ounce can tomato sauce 2 pounds ground beef 1 /2 cup onion, chopped 2 eggs 1/4 teaspoon oregano 1 1/2 teaspoons salt Combine milk, cereal and 1 cup tomato sauce; add beef, eggs, onion and salt. Mix well. Grease loaf pan.

Bake at 350° for 1 hour and 20 minutes. Heat remaining sauce and pour over meat.

Four Layer Dessert 1 cup flour 1 stick oleo 1/2 cup nuts

Crust

Second layer 1 8-ounce package cream cheese 1 cup powdered sugar 1 cup Cool Whip Third layer 2 large boxes instant pudding (any flavor) 4 cups milk Fourth layer 1 container Cool Whip For crust: Mix together flour, oleo and nuts. Put in a 9-by-13-inch pan. Bake at 350° and cool. For second layer: Mix cream cheese, powdered sugar and Cool Whip. Spread over crust. For third layer: Mix instant pudding and milk. When almost thick, pour over second layer. For fourth layer: Spread Cool Whip over cake. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

WALNUT – Walnut Public Library has teamed up with Vintage Tech Recyclers to host a cell phone recycle drive. It’s time to empty the junk drawers and help out the library. Drop cell phones off at the library, located at 101 Heaton St. If the library is closed, leave it in the drop box. Recycling old cell phones keeps toxic materials out of landfills. Drop-off is free and there is no limit on the number of phones brought in. All proceeds from recycling old phones will go toward the library’s new furnace and air conditioner.

The library is also looking to host a large electronics recycle drive during the spring townwide garage sale.

This includes old computers, printers, monitors, TVs, microwaves, etc. The library is looking for a building to leave about six large pallets for a week or so before and after the sale. The building must have a lock on it.

The library staff would have someone attending the building during drop-off times.

Another option is if someone in the community would be willing to lend a semi-trailer that could be closed and

locked. The semi-trailer would be parked in the library parking lot during the sale. Those interesting in helping the library locate a building or semi-trailer, call Michele at 815-379-2159.

SPRING VALLEY – Story time is held from 5:30 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays in the children’s room at the library.

There is a story and craftrelated project during this time for preschool through second grade children. A parent must accompany their child. The event is free of charge.

TISKILWA – Tiskilwa Public Library’s story time for children will be at 4 p.m. Monday, May 13 and feature “Hat Parade.” Kids will decorate their own summer, cotton hat with fabric markers and will have a parade down Main Street wearing their cute creations. The story will be “I Want My Hat Back,” by Jon Klassen. The program is free and open to the public.

Logan Junior High School’s ‘Best Cookie’ competition winners PRINCETON — Logan Junior High School eighth-grade social studies classes competed in the “Best Cookie” competition on March 21. This was the culminating activity for an economic unit that had students taking roles as CEO, CFOs, design specialists and marketing managers. Each team named their company, designed a cookie unique to the current market and created a business plan to

market the cookie.

Companies discussed risks, potential profit and opportunity costs related to the design, development and marketing of their product. Each company was encouraged to enter the competition, utilizing their design skills, marketing skills and putting their business plan into action. It was a great opportunity for students to put economic terms required by

common core standards to use in a real life situation.

The first-place winners, with the company name of Peanut Butter Bowl, naming their cookie DM2, were Dallas Dellinger, CEO; Madalyn Robbins, design specialist; Devyn Strazalka, marketing manager; and Meghan Duffin, CFO. Second-place winners, with the company name of United Cookie Corporation,

naming their cookie Nitro Cookie, were Kiara Tate, CFO; Colin Pierson, design specialist; Dmitri Bruchman, CEO; and Aaron Sears, marketing manager.

Honoring and Volunteering WIAAA Advisory Council has opening ROCK ISLAND — The Western Illinois Area Agency on Aging is seeking individuals interested in planning for the needs of older adults in a 10-county area of western Illinois to serve as Advisory Council members.

Council members act in an advisory capacity to the WIAAA Board of Directors and staff.

The Council assists in determining priorities, identifying problem areas and needs, and defining agency goals. They currently have openings in Bureau, Henry and LaSalle counties. Advisory Council meetings are conducted the third Wednesday during September, November, January and May of each year at the Agency offices in Rock Island. The Western Illinois Area Agency on Aging is a non-profit corporation created for the purpose of improving the quality of life for older Americans. WIAAA acts to ensure coordinated, accessible services for older persons to live independent, meaningful and dignified lives.

WIAAA also acts as an advocate for older persons in developing community resources for the aged throughout the 10-county planning and service area while providing a comprehensive service network. Counties included in the agency’s jurisdiction are Bureau, Henderson, Henry, Knox, LaSalle, McDonough, Mercer, Putnam, Rock Island and Warren.

AARP seeks nominees for service award CHICAGO — AARP is now accepting nominations for its 2013 Illinois Andrus Award for Community Service honoring 50-plus Illinoisans who share their experience, talent and skills to enrich the lives of their community members. Named for the Association’s founder, it is AARP’s most prestigious and visible volunteer award.

“AARP has a strong commitment to volunteer service that is traced back to our founder, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus,” said Merri Dee, AARP Illinois state president. “The Andrus Award recognizes those individuals who tirelessly give of themselves in ways that significantly enrich the lives of others

and their communities.”

AARP selects one Andrus Award volunteer per state (or couple performing service together). Nominees do not need to be an AARP member nor do they need to have performed AARP volunteer work in order to receive the award. Nominations will be evaluated by the AARP Illinois Executive Council based on how the volunteer’s work has improved the community, supported AARP’s vision and mission, and inspired other volunteers. The award recipient will be announced in the fall.

AARP Illinois Andrus Award for Community Service nominees must meet the following eligibility requirements: • Nominees must be 50 years or older.

Volunteer training planned in June OGLESBY — The I-READ Adult Literacy Program at Illinois Valley Community College will conduct free volunteer tutor training sessions in June.

Volunteers must have a desire to work with adult learners and be willing to tutor two to three hours each week, but volunteers do not need to have teaching experience. Fifteen hours

Volunteers may choose to tutor in one-to-one sessions at a local library or in an Adult Education classroom at IVCC or at an

extension site within the IVCC district.

STREATOR — Community Players of Streator Inc. has announced its box office is now open for the 2013 season.

The first production, “Church Basement Ladies,” opens May 19 and runs through May 25. Tickets are available now to Super Saver season ticket holders and will go on sale to the general public on May 13. Tickets for the general public are $20 each.

Community Players of Streator’s 56th season will begin with a celebration of the church basement kitchen and the women who work there in “Church Basement Ladies.” Directed by Greg Tullis of Streator, the musical comedy features four distinct characters and their relationships as they organize the food and solve the problems of a Minnesota church about to undergo changes in 1965.

They stave off potential disasters, share and debate recipes, instruct the young, and keep the pastor on course. Audiences will recognize these ladies as they witness the church year unfold from below the house of God. In June, Brian Steep of Ottawa will direct “Leading Ladies” by Ken Ludwig, author of “Lend Me a Tenor” and “Moon Over Buffalo,” both previously presented at Engle Lane.

In this hilarious comedy, two English Shakespearean actors, Jack and Leo, find themselves down on their luck. When they hear that an old lady in York, Pa., is about to die and leave her fortune to her two long-lost English nephews, they resolve to pass themselves off as her beloved relatives and get the cash.
