Treasures galore on Route 34 Shoppers young and old, from far and near, can fill their shopping bags this weekend during the eighth annual More on 34 garage sale. Hundreds of vendors will sell their treasures, crafts, antiques, household furnishings, collectibles and other items during the two-day event which begins Friday morning and continues through Saturday. The 140-mile garage sale stretches from Galesburg to Kewanee through Neponset, Sheffield, Wyanet, Princeton, Dover and LaMoille in Bureau County, and continues through Mendota, Earlville and other Route 34 communities all the way to Aurora. Shoppers are sure to find numerous bargains and unique gifts this week during More on 34. Fortunately for shoppers and vendors alike, weekend temperatures are expected to be summer-perfect, in the upper 70s.

Do you have high blood pressure?

In Illinois, you aren’t alone Reducing sodium consumption by just 30 percent could prevent more than 100,000 cases of high blood pressure and save more than $200 million in medical costs in Illinois, where cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack and stroke remain a leading cause of death.

The nation recently celebrated High Blood Pressure Education Month, and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is encouraging healthy lifestyle changes to reduce diagnosis of high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, in Illinois.

“High blood pressure, or hypertension, increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack and stroke. Certain lifestyle changes, like regular exercise, quitting smoking and following a low sodium diet rich in fruit and vegetables, can reduce and help maintain a healthy blood pressure,” said IDPH Director Dr. LaMar Hasbrouck. “Make control your goal.”

Written as two figures, blood pressure is measured as the pressure when the heart has pumped (systolic) and when the heart is in between beats (diastolic), and is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg). Traditionally, blood pressure is considered “normal” when systolic pressure (the higher number) is less than 120 mmHg and diastolic pressure (the lower number) is less than 80 mmHg. People at risk for high blood pressure, often called “pre-hypertension,” have systolic pressure between 120 and 139 mmHg or diastolic between 80 and 89 mmHg. High blood pressure means systolic pressure is 140 mmHg or higher or diastolic is 90 mmHg or higher.

In the United States, 1 in 3 adults have high blood pressure, but many are unaware they have the condition

because of a lack of symptoms. In Illinois, one-third of all adults have been diagnosed with high blood pressure.

The prevalence of high blood pressure increases with age — 63 percent of adults in Illinois age 65 and older have high blood pressure. Hypertension-related health conditions account for more than 200,000 hospitalizations a year in Illinois at a cost of more than $9 billion.

African-Americans suffer from hypertension in disproportionate numbers, representing about 14 percent of the population in Illinois, but 42 percent of all cases.

Geographically, rural Pulaski County leads the state in adults with high blood pressure, at nearly 45 percent; Bond County in the Metro East area of the state has the lowest rate, at 23 percent.

Blood pressure can be kept under control with the following healthy habits: • Achieve and maintain a healthy body weight.

• Participate in 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on most days of the week.

• Eat a healthy diet that is high in fruits and vegetables and low in sodium, saturated fats, trans fat, and cholesterol.

• Reduce sodium intake. Guidelines recommend up to 2,300 mg of sodium per day for an adult. Those at higher risk should consume even less — no more than 1,500 mg per day.

• Manage stress.

• Limit alcohol consumption. No more than one drink each day for women and two for men.

• If you have high blood pressure, take your medication as directed.

• Quit smoking — and if you don’t smoke, don’t start.

Keeping your skin healthy this summer This is the first summer in which FDA’s new rules governing sunscreen labeling are in effect.

Did you know that no sunscreens are waterproof? Manufacturers may no longer make claims that their sunscreens are “waterproof” or “sweatproof.”

One of the most important new requirements: Testing and labeling that identifies sunscreens that are “broad spectrum,” meaning they offer protection against both UVB

and UVA rays.

Products may no longer be identified as “sunblocks” or claim instant protection or protection for more than two hours without reapplying.

FDA has no data demonstrating that sunscreens with an SPF of more than 50 provide additional benefits compared to those with SPF 50.

FDA has also requested additional data from manufacturers of sunscreen spray products to ensure their effectiveness and to determine

whether they present a safety concern if inhaled unintentionally.

The National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention designated the Friday before Memorial Day as Don’t Fry Day. FDA and EPA support this day by reminding individuals to do the following: • Slip on a shirt.

• Slop on broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher.

• Slap on a wide-brimmed hat.

• Wrap on sunglasses.

Who has the most beautiful eyes?

CHICAGO — Prevent Blindness America, the nation’s oldest non-profit, eye health and safety organization, is announcing the dates of the 2013 “Most Beautiful Eyes Contest.” The contest allows children across the United States the chance to win a $10,000 educational scholarship from Marchon Eyewear.

From June 24 through July 31, parents of children ages zero to 17 are encouraged to enter their child in the Prevent Blindness America Most Beautiful Eyes Contest by submitting a photo to the Prevent Blindness America Facebook page at facebook.com/preventblindness. Bauer was the chief of police in Wyoming, Ill., for seven years and acting chief of police in Bradford for his last year when he was killed while on duty in a tragic car accident on Aug. 6, 2010. Food court What man doesn’t like a good, old-fashioned hamburger? There are so many ways to prepare a burger — making a few changes here and there to turn an ordinary burger into something to please your favorite Father’s Day person.

Marty’s Burger 2 Vienna beef foot-long hot dogs (split in half length wise) 3 1/2 ounces fresh ground chuck (pressed into 2 paper thin patties) Fry the hamburger patties on a well seasoned skillet, about a minute on each side as they are so thin, then fry the hot dogs with a weight on them to flatten.

Put a slice of yellow cheese on top of the hamburger and layer the hot dogs on top. The toppings are mayonnaise, ketchup, lettuce, onion and a tomato slice.

Mustard and pickles are OK too. Top it off with a grilled bun, and you’ve solved the dilemma of whether you want a burger or a hotdog from the grill.

The Beer Maid-Rite Sandwich 1 pound fresh ground 80/20 chuck 5 pinches salt (to taste) 1 cup beer 3 squirts (teaspoons) yellow mustard 6 white squishy buns Pickle slices Chopped onion More yellow mustard Place a heavy cast iron skillet over medium heat to warm for five minutes. Turn heat to medium high and crumble the beef into the skillet. Add salt. Using the blade end of the spatula, chop the beef as it cooks until it is pebbly. When the beef loses most of its pink, add the beer and turn the heat up to high. Add the mustard as the beer begins to bubble and stir to mix contents. Cook over high heat, stirring constantly, until most of the liquid has evaporated. Scoop onto buns that have been doused with onion, pickle and more mustard. Enjoy with the remaining beer. Makes 5 to 6 sandwiches. This recipe comes from Taylor’s Maid-Rite in Marshalltown, Iowa.

The Peanut Butter ‘Guberburger’ 1 cup smooth peanut butter 1 pound fresh ground 80 percent lean chunk Salt 4 white squishy buns Butter In a small saucepan, heat peanut butter over a very low flame. Divide the meat into quarters and form into loose balls. Place a heavy cast iron skillet over medium heat to warm for one minute. Turn heat to high, wait a minute, then place balls of beef into pan.

Sprinkle some salt on the meat and with a strong spatula press once into the shape of a patty; cover the pan.

Once the pink in the meat is almost gone from the surface (about 2 minutes) flip the burgers and cook

for another two minutes. Remove from heat and place on toasted white buns. To best toast buns, butter and place in skillet over medium heat. Spoon some hot peanut butter onto the patty and enjoy. This recipe comes from the Wheel Inn of Sedalia, Mo., where they make a practice of including lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise. Give it a shot if you’ve got the stomach.

Makes four quarter-pound burgers.

The ‘Motz Burger’ with Schnack Sauce

2-3 heads of cabbage, shredded 1 green bell pepper, chopped 1 to 1 1/2 cups sugar 2 cups distilled white vinegar 1/2 cup canola oil 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 teaspoon celery seed 2 tablespoons prepared mustard Place the cabbage in a large bowl. Place the green pepper on top of the cabbage. Pour the sugar over both (for 2 heads use 1 cup sugar, for 3 heads use 1 1/2 cups). In a large saucepan bring to a boil the vinegar, canola oil, salt, pepper, celery seed and mustard.

Boil until the mustard is dissolved (about 5 minutes).

Pour the hot brew over the bowl of cabbage and peppers and let set; when the bowl has cooled, mix the contents and refrigerate. The slaw tastes best when it has had time to marinate. This comes from the Bobcat Bite in Santa Fe, N.M. They put this on a green Chile cheeseburger, but it could go on about any burger or even a pulled pork sandwich. Yum!

1 pound fresh ground 80 percent lean chuck 4 white soft buns Salt Butter Divide meat into quarters and form into loose balls.

Place a heavy cast iron skillet over medium heat to warm for 10 minutes. Turn heat to high, wait a minute, then place the balls of beef into pan. Sprinkle some salt on the meat and press as little as possible into patty shapes using a strong spatula. Cover the pan. Cook on one side for about two minutes (no more), flip and cook for another minute and a half (do not press again). Remove from heat and place on toasted white buns (to best toast buns, butter and place in skillet over medium heat. Makes 4 quarterpound burgers.

Deep Fried Depression-Era Burger 1 cup finely crumbled, stale white bread 1 pound fresh ground 80 percent lean chuck 2 teaspoons salt Corn or vegetable oil for frying 8 white buns Pickles Yellow mustard This recipes makes eight burgers and requires one hour prep/refrigerator time. Place the bread, salt and meat in a large mixing bowl and blend well with hands. Form the patties by pressing a golf ball-sized wad of beef flat on a square of waxed paper with the heel of your palm. The flat patties should be a bit larger than the bun. Refrigerate patties for at least an hour (cooling the burger mix helps to keep the patties moist in the center when you deep fry). Heat 1/2 inch of oil in a cast iron skillet over medium heat.

The oil needs to be hot (to test, toss in a small crumb of fresh bread. If the bread immediately bubbles, the oil is ready). Place one patty at a time into the oil, it should float freely. After roughly 30 seconds, flip the patty and cook for another 30 seconds. The patty’s edges will crisp to brown and resemble fried chicken.

Remove from the oil, drain on paper towels and serve on buns with pickle and mustard. This is a recipe from the Snappy Lunch in North Carolina.

Schnack Sauce 1/4 cup mayonnaise 2 tablespoons grainy mustard 2 teaspoons canned Mexican chipotle (A pinch of chipotle powder can be substituted, but the canned chipotles work best) Combine the ingredients in a food processor and blend well (mix in bowl if not using whole canned chipotles). Serve on a Motz burger. Note: This sauce is hot. If you like creamy hot things, this sauce is for you. Makes enough for eight quarter-pound burgers.

Goop Sauce, My Way 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1/4 cup sour cream 4 teaspoons sweet relish 4 teaspoons yellow mustard Mix contents. Spread on your favorite burger. Makes enough for 12 burgers.

Father’s Day: June 16 The idea of Father’s Day was conceived slightly more than a century ago

by Sonora Dodd of Spokane, Wash., while she listened to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. Dodd wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart, a widowed Civil War veteran who was left to raise his six children on a farm. A day in June was chosen for the first Father’s Day celebration, June 17, 1910, proclaimed

by Spokane’s mayor because it was the month of Smart’s birth.

The first presidential proclamation honoring fathers was issued in 1966 when President Lyndon Johnson designated the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Father’s Day has been celebrated annually since 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed the public law that made it permanent.

Here are some statistics about fathers as provided by the Census Bureau.

• 70.1 million - Estimated number of fathers across the nation in 2008, the most recent year for which data are available.

• 24.4 million - Number of fathers who were part of married-couple families with children younger than 18 in 2012. Of those, 21 percent were raising three or more children younger than 18 (among married-couple family households only), and 3 percent were a subfamily living in someone else’s home.

• 1.96 million - Number of single fathers in 2012; 16 percent of single parents were men. Nine percent were raising three or more children younger than 18; about 44 percent were divorced; 31 percent were never married; 20 percent were separated; and 5 per-

cent were widowed; Fortytwo percent had an annual family income of $50,000 or more.

• 189,000 - Estimated number of stay-at-home dads in 2012. These married fathers with children younger than 15 have remained out of the labor force for at least one year primarily so they can care for the family while their wife works outside the home. These fathers cared for upward of 369,000 children.

• 18 percent - In Spring 2011, the percentage of preschoolers regularly cared for by their father during their mother’s working hours.

• $1.9 billion - Amount of child support received by custodial fathers in 2009; they were due $3.5 billion. In contrast, custodial mothers received $19.5 billion of the $31.7 billion in support that was due.

• 34 percent - Percentage of custodial fathers who received all child support that was due in 2009, not significantly different from the corresponding percentage for custodial mothers, 42 percent.

• 70 percent - Percentage of custodial fathers receiving noncash support, such as gifts or coverage of expenses, on behalf of their children. The corresponding proportion for mothers was 58 percent.

• 7,368 - The number

of men’s clothing stores around the country (as of 2010), a good place to buy Dad a tie or shirt.

• 15,542 - The number of hardware stores (as of 2010), a place to buy hammers, wrenches, screwdrivers and other items high on the list of Father’s Day gifts. Additionally, there were 6,764 home centers across the country in 2010.

• 21,418 - Number of sporting goods stores in 2010. These stores are

good places to purchase traditional gifts for dad, such as fishing rods and golf clubs.

• 79.1 million - The number of Americans who participated in a barbecue in 2010. It’s probably safe to assume many of these barbecues took place on Father’s Day.

The children will also have the opportunity to listen to stories, discover their hidden talents, play games, win prizes, read and participate in a talent show.

PMH 60 Plus plans bus trip PRINCETON — The Perry Memorial Hospital 60 Plus Program is planning a bus trip on July 17 to the Amana Colonies in Iowa. The trip will feature lunch at the Ox Yoke Inn and a performance by The Bretts at The Old Creamery Theatre.

The Bretts, a Branson favorite, have appeared on television and in more than 3,000 live performances around the globe. The Bretts deliver high energy, high caliber professional entertainment to audiences of all ages.

Craft fair and flea market MENDOTA — The Crafters Market Place and Flea Market will again be featured at Mendota’s annual Sweet Corn Festival on Aug. 10 and 11.

The Sweet Corn Festival is one of the largest harvest festivals in the state and attracts more than 55,000 people. It climaxes on Sunday with the serving of more than 50 tons of free hot buttered Del Monte sweet corn.

Free yoga event in Neponset NEPONSET — Neponset Pride will host “Yoga Around the Gazebo” on June 20 in Bertelsen Park in downtown Neponset.

A beginner yoga class for all ages will be presented from 7 to 8 p.m. Neponset native Carol GolbySaunders is offering a free yoga session to all area residents.

The classes will feature an integrative, gentle, non-competitive and playful style of yoga for men, women and children. Area residents of all ages will learn stretching, breathing and relaxation techniques that can be used in the office or at home. She suggests that interested persons bring a yoga mat, rug or towel to the classes. She also suggests wearing comfortable clothing. For those less mobile, just bring yourself and Carol will teach you how to stretch while seated in a chair or while using a chair to help you keep your balance.

Refreshments will be served after the session.

SPRINGFIELD — Planning a vacation this summer? Whether your plans are for a weekend just hours from home or spending a few weeks in another state or country, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) recommends including emergency preparedness in your vacation planning. IEMA will promote vacation preparedness throughout the month of June as part of its 2013 preparedness campaign.

“Vacation time is supposed to be relaxing and fun,” said IEMA Director Jonathon Monken. “But a disaster occurring when you’re far from home can be very stressful, particularly if you don’t know how to stay safe. A little research, planning and strategic packing could go a long way toward keeping your family safe throughout your vacation.”

Monken said a first step in vacation emergency planning is to conduct an Internet search to learn about natural and manmade hazards for the area you plan to visit. If you’re not sure how to prepare for certain disasters, such as hurricanes, tsunamis or earthquakes, research preparedness measures for those hazards.

Even if your vacation spot is prone to dangers you’re already familiar with, such as tornadoes and severe thunderstorms, dealing with those emergencies can be challenging in a new environment.

When you arrive at your destination, iden-

tify safe locations to go to when severe weather approaches and find out how weather warnings are communicated in the area (are there outdoor warning sirens, does your hotel or resort have a public address system).

Also, locate a hospital near where you’re staying.

To help travelers prepare for vacation, IEMA offers the following tips: Before you leave Pack a travel-size emergency supply kit with water, snacks, a first-aid kit, flashlight, small battery-operated radio, extra batteries and an emergency contact card with names and phone numbers.

Pack extra supplies of critical items, such as prescription medications and baby formula, in case your return is delayed by a disaster.

Let family and friends know your itinerary and how to reach you.

Develop a communications plan and make everyone in your traveling group aware of the plan. Make sure everyone has the cell phone numbers of the others in your group. Designate an out-of-area person to contact in case your group is separated during an emergency and unable to place local calls.

If traveling internationally, register with the U.S. Department of State through a free online service at https://travelregistration.state.gov/ ibrs/ui/. The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) allows travelers to

enter information about upcoming trips abroad so that the Department of State can better assist them in an emergency.

During your trip If traveling by car, check the forecast for your entire route before and during your trip.

Weather conditions can change drastically, especially if thunderstorms are expected.

Bring along a travel weather radio, which will automatically switch to the weather radio station closest to your travel area and will alert you to any hazardous weather.

Become familiar with the names of the counties you are traveling through because hazardous weather warnings are issued by county.

If you are in a vehicle when a tornado warning has been issued or you see a tornado approaching, seek shelter in a sturdy building until the storm passes. If you’re unable to reach a sturdy building, pull over and find a low area, such as a ditch, and take cover there.

Familiarize yourself with emergency plans in your hotel or place you are staying as soon as you arrive.

If disaster strikes your vacation spot, you can register on the American Red Cross’ “Safe and Well” website at www. safeandwell.org so family and friends will know that you are safe.

Entertainment ‘Inferno’ All your life, you’ve tried to be good.

As a child, you were taught kindness and compassion, honesty and trustworthiness.

You learned graciousness and generosity, and embraced gratitude.

You’ve always tried to be good for several reasons, mostly because it’s the right Terri thing to do. Schlichenmeyer Also, there’s a place for evil people and you don’t want to go there, but in the new novel “Inferno” by Dan Brown, you may have no choice. Hell may be coming to Earth.

Nothing made sense — then again, nightmares rarely do.

But when Professor Robert Langdon woke up in a hospital room

in Florence, Italy, the nightmares weren’t the worst of his problems. Langdon couldn’t remember how or why he’d gotten to Italy in the first place, or how he’d been grazed by a bullet aimed at his head.

Though he’d been sedated, there was little time for recovery: moments after he regained consciousness, a spikyhaired woman strode down the hospital’s hall and tried to kill Langdon again. He narrowly escaped with the help of his doctor, quick-thinking Sienna Brooks, who asked Langdon about an object he’d been carrying.

Covered with text and symbols, the object was a cylinder that, once opened, yielded an odd device that became a projector. Though Langdon was an expert on Italian art and literature,

Dante in particular, the image from the projector mystified him.

It was a famous painting, an impression of Dante’s “Inferno,” but it had been altered. Dante’s Rings of Hell were out of order, with additions to the painting in strange places. Slowly, Langdon came to understand that the alterations were clues to what the device was and where it had come from ... but there was no time to think.

Someone wanted him dead, and they’d surely kill Dr. Brooks, too.

On a ship just off the coast of Italy, the provost pondered his last client. He was glad the man’s contract was done. The Consortium had spent a year maintaining the man’s privacy and safety, but the work was troublesome and the provost regretted taking the business.

He regretted it even more when he realized what the client was about to unleash ...

OK, first the bad news: “Inferno” is a tad too long.

Author Dan Brown’s two main characters escape and are chased over and over and over again, relentlessly — which is exciting at first, but tiring as this book progresses. “Inferno” also ends rather strangely (but I won’t tell you why, because that would ruin it for you).

Now the good news: Dan Brown has a new book out.

And it’s a thriller with chases, intrigue, esoteric clues that require genius-level thinking, international locales, secret passages, and an evil madman. It’s complex and fast-moving.
