ON THE COVER Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley celebrates the opening of Whole Foods Market on May 27 in Elmhurst. Erica Benson ebenson@shawmedia.com

By F. AMANDA TUGADE atugade@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – For the past 53 years, the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art, which stands at the corner of Cottage Hill Avenue and Church Street in Wilder Park, has housed numerous gemstone, antique and earth science exhibits. Now, the museum is in need of a structural change. Executive Director John Lizzadro, Museum Director Dorothy Asher and museum supporters appeared before the Elmhurst Park District Board of Commissioners on May 27 to present a plan for a bigger, safer and more energy-efficient museum. The Lizzadro Foundation has carried only one mission for nearly half a century: to serve the public, and in order to keep that promise, the building must be rebuilt, said architect Andy Joseph of Wight and Co., who led the discussion. Joseph said although the design details of the building are unfinished, the current plan is to build an 18,000-square-foot, two-story museum at the existing location that includes an entryway to accessible parking and a drop-off location mainly for school buses in order to minimize traffic for visitors. The new museum will have two wings, which would provide a larger space separate from exhibit halls to host more people for various classes and programs, he said. Joseph added other major changes involve making the museum ADA-accessible, especially near the entrance of the building, renovating stormwater mitigation to prevent flooding, building a basement for maintenance and storage purposes, and having more windows to scrap its “opaque box” look. While prior discussion of potentially relocating the museum has since

Board President Carolyn Ubriaco shared Gillman’s concerns. She said the board recognizes Wilder Park is a quiet, “passive” park – a place where Elmhurst residents feel comfortable to play a pickup game or lay a picnic blanket under a tree. “I would say I would have to challenge you because we’re under incredible pressure from constituents and from our own consciences to preserve green space, to keep providing that respite from a built environment,” Ubriaco said. Ubriaco added although the proposed height of the building would align with the Elmhurst Art Museum, she suggested Joseph and the foundation reconsider it out of respect for

the park. Joseph said they plan on eliminating the museum’s monolithic structure by creating a variation in height with the two-story structure. Ubriaco and Commissioner Mary Kies suggested Joseph and the foundation host another public meeting about the project since past meetings involved plans to relocate the museum, and the proposal has since changed. Joseph said they will host another meeting, but it is not yet known when that will be. The foundation estimates construction for the new museum will take about four years, and if the board makes a swift decision to move forward, they hope to open in spring 2019, he said. Commissioners showed support for improving the museum but encouraged the foundation to explore all options. “We’re not going to get another shot at this for another 50 years, so I really want to make sure that you’ve considered everything,” Ubriaco said.

ELMHURST – After nearly a year and a half of construction, Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley joined the Whole Foods Market team to celebrate the grocery store’s grand opening May 27 along Route 83 in Elmhurst with a “bread-breaking” ceremony. When Whole Foods acquired the 50,000-square-foot space, a former Dominick’s store, the company gutted the inside and built from the ground up. “I was here when it was just a dirt ground,” store team leader Jason Krapausky said. The Elmhurst site is just one of seven former Dominick’s stores Whole Foods Market obtained in the Chicago area, and it is the fifth one to open, he said. Now, the store is decorated with hand-drawn artwork and carefully crafted wooden pieces, as well as aisles full of organic, natural ingredients, kitchen staples and household necessities. “Food is a such a wonderful thing,” Whole Foods spokeswoman Allison Phelps said. “It’s something we commune over and bond over, and it is a huge part of our social dynamic.” The market is dedicated to creating a cozy shopping experience for their customers, and that is why every part of the store, from the food to its design, is carefully planned, Phelps said. Because Whole Foods carries products from local and regional farms, food items vary from market to market. This flavor of uniqueness also is evident through Whole Foods’ chefs, who add different flairs and styles to the way they cook regularly offered dishes served at the stores, she said. For Elmhurst residents looking to learn more before jumping into the new shopping experience the market offers, Whole Foods will give tours to share the basics of the store. Phelps said she and the Whole Foods Market team recognize that taking the step to make a change in one’s diet is the start of a journey and the process can be overwhelming.

Proposals change for Addison Avenue sites By F. AMANDA TUGADE atugade@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – The city of Elmhurst now has only one developer interested in its downtown properties at 138 and 142 N. Addison Ave. Elmhurst previously received proposals from both a fitness center and a housing complex interested in the parcels, but the residential developer has since backed out. Development, Planning and Zoning Committee Chairman Scott M. Levin said the committee received a letter from James Hughes, CEO of Next Generation Development, who proposed building condominiums or apartments on the available lots. In the letter, Hughes said a part of the company’s proposal required buying land in addition to the two lots to provide on-site parking for residents. He explained Next Generation Development could not compete with the fitness club’s offer for the existing lots and added “what we could afford would be far less.” Fitness Formula Clubs founder Gale Landers and architect Stephen Long of Antunovich Associates presented revisions to their initial proposal to the

The Development, Planning and Zoning Committee reviews the changes made to Fitness Formula Clubs’ initial proposal to build a fitness center at 138 and 142 N. Addison Ave. during a meeting May 26. committee May 26 to address concerns shared by Elmhurst residents about club users being able to see into nearby homes. Long, who led the discussion, said residents were mostly worried about whether people could look into their homes through the fitness studios’ windows on the first and second floors of the three-story building. Residents also were concerned the issue may occur with the windows located inside the indoor swimming pool area on the third floor, he said.

To ensure privacy for both residents and fitness club members, the window sills will be raised, and an opaque film will be added to the windows, Long said. In addition, the number of small windows near the fitness center’s stairwells will be minimized. Another change in the proposal includes redesigning the brick wall at the backside of the building. Long said the team has decided to add a different color scheme and use a different texture to break up the brick and make the wall look more appealing to

the residential area. The developer also will remove one of two large accent walls placed on the front sides of the building to allow sunlight into the windows of the adjacent property and reduce the wall of the rooftop’s sun deck, which was originally designed to be at the full height of the 45-foot building. Even though the wall’s height will be decreased, it will still be tall enough to prevent people from looking over it, Long said. Landers said he and his team are willing to accommodate other issues residents may have with the proposed fitness center, but their priority remains building a successful, accessible center. “I can only do so much in terms of modifying the structure of the building,” Landers said. “But the program has to work for us at the square footage that we’re buying at the price that we are buying.” Levin, committee member Mark Mulliner and Mayor Steve Morley said they appreciate Landers and his team for working with Elmhurst residents and choosing to plant the facility in the community. The developer will next present its proposal to the Elmhurst City Council.

Elmhurst College students receive Founders Awards

2015 LOUIS’ INVITATIONAL

46TH ANNUAL GOLF OUTING

Open 1918

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA

Closed 1989

The Louis’ Invitational Golf Outing began in 1969 with just a handful of golfers. Today, it has grown to include more than 150 participants. Held each August at Bloomingdale Golf Club, the outing is hosted by friends and family of the former Louis’ Restaurant in Addison. Proceeds from the Outing benefit the Ervin T. Bosworth ’42 and Dorothy Bosworth ’45 Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund at Elmhurst College. The scholarship supports students involved in extra-curricular activities. Ervin Bosworth was the son of the restaurant’s founder Louis Bosworth, a Hungarian immigrant who established the landmark restaurant in 1918. Since its inception in 1992, the Ervin T. Bosworth ’42 and Dorothy Bosworth ’45 Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund has awarded 54 students over $134,000 in scholarship aid. To date the Louis’ Golf Outing has raised $368,000. The total value of the Bosworth Endowed Scholarship Fund exceeds $500,000.

ELMHURST – Three Elmhurst College students received the Founders Award at the annual Honors Convocation in May. There are three branches of the Founders Award, recognizing service to the global community, greater society and the college community, according to a college news release. Collectively, the award recognizes students for their initiative, dedication and service to others. College junior and music major Jose Flores received the Cureton Award for Service to the Global Community. In the release, Flores said his mission is “to reach farther than our domestic sphere and bond humans cross-culturally with the most powerful connective force on earth: Music.” Chelsea Karson, a college senior and biology major, received the Founders Award for Service to the Greater Society. Karson is a founding member of an animal shelter and board member of the Commuter Advisory Board. In the release, Karson, who has completed more than 100 volunteer hours at Good Shepherd Hospital, said her service work has taught her patience, acceptance and advocacy, which she intends to carry on through her career as a physician. Meredithe Mimlitz won the Founders Award for Service to the College Community. Mimlitz, a senior who is double majoring in communication studies and religion and service, has served in numerous positions with the Student Government Association, Elmhurst College Progressive Christians and Spiritual Life Council. Mimlitz also was awarded the 205 Senior of the Year Award for her academic achievement and campus involvement.

Pruneau set a great OUR VIEW example for D-205 Now’s the time to revel in When Dave Pruneau walked in the door of the superintendent’s office July 1, 2011, District 205 was in the middle of extended teacher negotiations, the EEPRT process had resulted in millions of dollars in budget cuts, four out of seven board members were brand new to the role of school governance, and half of his administrative cabinet was new as well. COMMUNITY About a week in, he probably VOICE wondered what he was thinkMelea ing to take this job. Smith But Dave quickly rolled up his sleeves and set about building a team. He created board committees to provide more in-depth study in the areas of curriculum and instruction, finance and operations, performance management, policy and board improvement. He worked collaboratively with his administrative leaders to get the school year up and running. And he met with teachers, both in person and virtually, on opening day. That day, he told the story of a little boy who wasn’t doing very well in school, a little boy who was something of a troublemaker. He related that a school custodian took the boy under his wing, mentoring him and helping to set him on the right path. In middle school, the boy got involved in sports and was shaped and mentored by coaches. By the time he was finished with high school, the young man had performed well enough to earn an academic scholarship to Michigan State University. From there, he went on to become a teacher and school administrator. “That man is standing before you today as your new superintendent,” Mr. Pruneau told his rapt audience. His point was that supporting students is everyone’s job, because one never knows the difference they can make in a young person’s life. Dave set a standard – support every student, every day. He firmly believes all kids can learn and all kids are valuable. He told his staff that if they couldn’t find him in his office, he’d be out visiting classrooms. While Superintendent in Rochester, Mich., as well as here in Elmhurst, Mr. Pruneau created an improvement model that set districtwide goals, based on specific District Performance Indicators established by the board. Under this model, accountability is based on growth and improvement, as compared to a benchmarking process to improve district achievement. District 205 DPIs indicate there has, indeed, been impressive growth during the past four years. When Dave Pruneau retires June 30, he will be leaving a positive mark on District 205 students, staff and community. And we are better for his leadership.

nice weather, great events

In the depths of January’s icy freeze, no doubt many of us wondered why anyone would choose to live in such a frozen wasteland. In February and March, the mercury slowly climbed, but still our teeth chattered and our ice scrapers were required most mornings. Even April brought its share of unexpectedly cool weather. None of that matters now. Shortsleeve weather is here, and now we remember why we wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. As this year’s Memorial Day parades and cookouts recede from view, many of us are taking stock of what to do with the rest of the nice weather stretching out ahead. Maybe a trip to somewhere interesting, a visit to distant family or even a jaunt to a foreign nation. There’s an abundance of options. While you’re making out your list, don’t forget to factor in all the great local festivals and events right in our area. For instance, in the coming months you can look forward to: • The La Grange Pet Parade on May 30 • Elmhurst City Centre’s Block to Block Party on June 3 and 10 • Taste of Wheaton from June 4 to 7 • The Lombard Ale Fest on June 13 • The Hinsdale Fine Arts Festival on

June 13 and 14 • Villa Park’s Summer Fest on June 19 and 20 • DuPage County Fair from July 22 to 26 You can find a lot more than these in our online calendar at planitlife.com. These are much more than backup plans for when your out-of-town plans fall through. Many of these events will draw folks from out of the area to our towns. It’s an opportunity for you to get out into your community, mingle with your neighbors, maybe stumble across some aspect of your own hometown that you’d never noticed before. And, incidentally, patronizing local events is a great way to vote with your dollars for local businesses and groups. Any time you can spend a few bucks locally, you’re helping to keep your local community vibrant and thriving. Just one more way it benefits you. By fall, the number of great events will begin to dwindle again, holidays aside. There will come a weekend when you’re stuck inside, listening to the winds howl, knowing that even if there was some great event going on somewhere, you’d rather not brave the elements. Don’t let yourself regret that you passed up a chance to take advantage while the weather was nice.

As a senior citizen, a 38-year homeowner/resident of Elmhurst, and one who rides extensively the bike trails and streets in and around Elmhurst almost daily, I must respond to the writer in the last Sound Off, who opines that bikers should ride the paths only. Bikers do ride the paths extensively, but one would have to ride to know! Certainly those who wanted the paths are on them! Bike riders have a legal right to ride the roads. They are not “getting in people’s ways” any more than trucks, buses or motorcycles. I observe that speeders and texters are bigger dangers and nuisances than bikers on the streets of Elmhurst. Drivers must take care and respect bikers’ rights.

COLLEGE OF DUPAGE BOARD | 5 THINGS TO KNOW

Board shifts power via policy changes and more By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com In a marathon five-hour meeting that featured divided votes on almost every issue on what became a nearly 20-item agenda, the College of DuPage Board of Trustees tackled a wide range of topics May 21.

1. Board gives itself more power The board took measures to distance itself from the college president’s office, increase self-policing and up the amount of potential control it has over the school and its administration. Trustees approved a series of changes to board policies 6-1, with Erin Birt dissenting. Many centered on placing the president’s office below the board and include: • Specifying the president’s organization and management of the college be under board direction • Mandating a minimum annual performance evaluation for the president • Requiring board approval for all procedures under the president’s oversight • Allowing board modification or revocation of those procedures • Removing the president from agenda preparation • Placing the board chairwoman in charge of maintaining closed session recordings.

2. Consent agenda axed Much of the meeting was spent talking about items that, according to the agenda, weren’t planned to be discussed. After board Vice Chairwoman Deanne Mazzochi and Secretary Frank Napolitano voiced concerns about all but two topics on the eight-item consent agenda – which is intended for items considered routine by the board that do not require a separate vote or discussion – trustees chose to vote on each item individually. Mazzochi said after the meeting she objected to the level of detail presented for

the items, calling specifically for public bidding information and program goals in each purchase proposal.

3. No long-range plan? While it wasn’t up for a vote, the agenda included an item about the college’s strategic long-range plan, aimed at creating goals and a policy direction for the school’s future. However, board Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton urged her fellow trustees to consider not moving forward with a plan until after the school implemented other policy changes and went through a state policy and financial audit.

4. Birt (mostly) opposes board Former board chairwoman Birt largely continued her streak of opposition. Before leaving the meeting early because of a schedule conflict, she voted against or abstained from nearly all the items the board considered. Birt also was not in attendance for the May 14 special meeting because of a schedule conflict and led fellow returning trustees Joseph Wozniak and Dianne McGuire in a uniform no vote protest April 30, saying the agenda was compiled without the consent of the entire board.

5. Guns, guns, guns One of the items taken off the consent agenda was the purchase of $31,213.72 for 59 firearms for the Homeland Security Training Institute. Though some trustees and members of the public called the pricing into question, institute Associate Dean Thomas Brady said staff requested several “brand name” guns – 24 Colt M4 carbines and 24 Glock .40 caliber handguns – to align with what many local law enforcement officers use, as well as 11 more Smith and Wesson handguns for public use at the institute gun range. The motion passed 4-3, with Birt, Mazzochi and Napolitano against, the latter two citing spending as a concern.

MCLEAN, VA--(Marketwired - May 26, 2015) - Freddie Mac (OTCQB: FMCC) today announced that on May 21st it sold via auction 1,052 deeply delinquent Ocwen serviced non-performing loans (NPLs) from its mortgage investment portfolio as part of its Standard Pool Offerings (SPO). The loans have an aggregate unpaid principal balance (UPB) of $201 million. The transaction is expected to settle in July 2015. This is the third SPO offering 2015 year-to-date. These loans have been delinquent for approximately three years, on average. Given the deep delinquency status of the loans, the borrowers have likely been evaluated previously for or are already in various stages of loss mitigation, including modification or other alternatives to foreclosure, or are in foreclosure. Mortgages that were previously modified and

subsequently became delinquent comprise 29% of the aggregate pool balance. The loans were offered as a single pool of mortgage loans. LSF9 Mortgage Holdings, LLC was the winning bidder. The cover bid price (the second highest bid) was in the mid 70s percent of UPB. Weighted average BPO LTV, average loan size and note rate are 93%, $191,177 and 5.28%, respectively. Freddie Mac, through its advisors, began marketing the transaction on April 28, 2015 to potential bidders, including minority and women-owned businesses (MWOBs), non-profits, neighborhood advocacy funds and private investors active in the NPL market. The transaction is subject to the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) NPL sale requirements and guidelines announced on March 2nd. Requirements on winning bidders’ servicers include: •Servicer must be approved by and in good standing with Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, Ginnie Mae, or FHA. •All servicers must agree to service in accordance with applicable law.

ransitioning to a senior living community can be filled with mixed emotions from everyone involved. You may have many questions. Is it really necessary at this time? Will we get the help and care from the staff when we need it? Will my loved one like the other residents and make new friends...? The answer to all these questions is yes. New friends are made all the time. We witness it every day here at Lexington Square. Most caring communities take time to ensure their caregivers are extremely helpful and at your service. It’s stressful and difficult for a love one to accept that they need more help with daily activities. They often feel a sense of loss. They’re experiencing loss of independence, loss of their home, and loss of the ability to perform basic tasks. It’s best to respect these new emotions, and be sympathetic to their situation. Fear of the unknown can intensify any other emotions they have. Over time, as they adjust, these emotions often turn to joy and excitement as they experience how beneficial community life can be. Discover more about what to expect during a transition and important questions to ask the communities you’re considering. We’ve put together a free guide called: “7 Questions to Ask When Screening Senior Living Communities - and Two Points to Consider Before Making Your Final Decision”. It’s an unbiased guide to help. New Solutions to your Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy

Neuropathy Recovery I Workshop

FREE

f you suffer from a single one of these torturous symptoms- numbness, tingling, burning or sharp nerve pain, then read on. A new breakthrough treatment could change your life. Neuropathy can affect every part of your life - walking, sitting, sleeping, socializing, your ability to enjoy your relationships and so much more. If you have tired “everything” (Anodyne therapy, physical therapy, Lyrica, Neurotin or other meds) without getting the results you want then this may be the most important information that you ever read. There is a simple reason that most treatments fail, because at best they only cover up your symptoms and do not help your damaged nerves. Peripheral neuropathy is a condition that affects people in every walk of life. It is estimated that 20 million Americans and 60% of diabetics suffer from this disorder. There are many kinds of neuropathy, the symptoms of which include burning, tingling, weakness, numbness, paralysis, and dull to excruciating pain - especially in the hands and feet. Although many neuropathies have no known causes, neuropathy is often associated with other conditions. Examples are: Diabetes, shingles, toxins, autoimmune disorders, bulging discs that compress on nerves, spinal stenosis, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and poor nutrition. Statin drugs and chemotherapy can also cause neuropathy. For the last three years Dr. Susan Kelenyi, DC of Glen Ellyn, IL has worked extensively with peripheral neuropathy patients. Dr. Kelenyi describes peripheral neuropathy as damage to the nerves, which transmits information from the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body. “This can result in pain, loss of feeling, and inability to control muscles, such as difficulty with walking. As with any other condition, there is no “one size fits all” remedy for those suffering from neuropathies and treatment may vary depending on the cause and severity.” However, many individuals can and do find relief using natural remedies. And this is where Dr. Kelenyi steps in. Of the many causes of peripheral neuropathies”, says Dr. Kelenyi, “ a major one comes from a metabolic condition. You cannot drug your way out of a metabolic condition. It requires a change in lifestyle.” Dr. Kelenyi says, “Diet is crucial when addressing peripheral neuropathy, especially in diabetics and autoimmune disorders. Harmful foods to be avoided include alcohol, sugar, processed foods, fast foods, junk foods, sodas of all types, foods sprayed with pesticides, and trans-fatty acids. Sweeteners and additives contained in diet soda and processed foods such as MSG and aspartame can negatively impact the nervous system.” As a Board Eligible Chiropractic Neurologist, Dr. Kelenyi performs specific metabolic and neurologic tests to help determine what is causing the problem. There are a few primary types of neuropathies: Large or small diameter or both as well as motor. If jerking is involved then it can be as much a problem in the brain due to trans-neural degeneration as it is in the peripheral nerve. A thorough and comprehensive exam ensures an accurate diagnosis. Dr. Kelenyi states that her peripheral neuropathy recovery program is a combination of different cutting edge techniques and protocols. “We use revolutionary breakthrough protocols in the treatment of Peripheral Neuropathy… one of the therapies offered is Horizontal Therapy which is the latest, breakthrough in the science of electro-medicine and the most advanced and effective form of bioelectric treatment available to date. I’m very proud to be the first in the area to offer this to my patients ...pain management without drugs or surgery to get lasting results.” Additional therapies may include: oxygen, vibration, spinal decompression, cold laser therapy along with brain balance therapies to create a layered approach to “wake up” the nerves so they can function again and re-educate nerve pathways that have gone “hay-wire”. Dr. Kelenyi says, “Our solutions are non-drug, non-surgical approaches, that are researched based and based on prior clinical success. The reason we achieve excellent outcomes is because we take both a metabolic and neurological approach in our program.” She says it’s a very rewarding way of practicing. “We get chronically ill people coming from all over the Chicagoland area, even out of state, to our clinic. The most important thing for these patients is results. We get results.”

TUESDAY, JUNE 2ND AT 11:00AM

Ask yourself… • Has your condition affected every part of your life? • Have you tried “everything” (Anodyne therapy, physical therapy, Lyrica®, Neurotin®, or other medications) without getting the results you want? • Do you suffer with other secondary symptoms such as falling, dexterity, muscle atrophy, etc.? • Would you rather ix the underlying problem rather than cover it up with drugs?

Topics to be discussed • What is and what are the main causes for Peripheral Neuropathy • Diabetes & Peripheral Neuropathy • If you are taking “statin” drugs - what your doctor doesn’t tell you could hurt you • If your nerves are damaged what does that mean for the rest of your body • Why your lab results do not tell the whole story • How you can live pain free with a clinically proven program

hearing devices decreasing in size, many now have the ability to pair with phones and televisions via Bluetooth technology. “Many people fear the stigma of having hearing issues, but our solutions are very discrete,” Rogan says. It is recommended that anyone with a family history of hearing issues schedule a check-up. Rogan says that a common indication of hearing issues is when members of the family begin complaining. “Most people simply don’t know what they don’t hear,” Rogan says. “It’s important for people to not fear the screening process because early intervention always has a better outcome.” With a long history of helping others in the area Rogan looks to continue providing modern hearing solutions for the residents of the area. “I really like it here,” Rogan says. “I get a lot of enjoyment out of helping others improve their lives through our services.” The Susan Rogan Hearing centers are located at 419 N. orget the adage “Youth is wasted on the young”; today’s single, female baby boomers are happy, confident and healthy. Seventy-six percent of single women over 55 feel younger than their age, according a survey by retirement community homebuilder Del Webb. Seventy-four percent of respondents said they’re as happy, or happier, than they were at age 35, and nearly half (45 percent) believe their best years are yet to come. In fact, more than one in five (22 percent) say they feel more attractive than they did at 35. Highest obesity rates Recent data from the Trust for America’s Health showed that the baby boom generationis the most obese of any age group. According to the study, in 17 states more than 35 percent of boomers are obese, and in 41 states, more than 30 percent of boomers are obese. “While baby boomers are living longer these days, they may be living sicker,” said national health expert Dr. Lori Shemek. “Boomers’ attention to looks bypassed their attention to their weight’ leading to a generation that is living longer, but sicker.”

Eat more greens Something as easy as adding more greens to your diet could help slow cognitive decline and improve memory, according to new research. “With baby boomers approaching old age, there is huge public demand for lifestyle behaviors that can ward off loss of memory and other cognitive abilities with age,” said Martha Clare Morris, assistant provost for community research at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. “Our study provides evidence that eating green leafy vegetables and other foods rich in vitamin K, lutein and beta-carotene can help to keep the brain healthy to preserve functioning.” Reasons to not retire Baby boomers are changing retirement, according to a recent study by the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies. Sixty-five percent of boomers plan to work past age 65 or do not plan to retire. Slightly more than half (52 percent) plan to continue working after they retire. Given widespread savings shortfalls, it is not surprising that 62 percent of the boomers surveyed who plan to work in retirement and/or past age 65 indicate that their main reason is income or health benefits. What is surprising is that 34 percent plan to work for enjoyment, including 18 percent who want to stay involved and 16 percent who enjoy what they do.

Red Stars Roll on in 2-1 Away Win over Defending Champs Hemmings and Huerta score for Chicago in rainy Kansas City Chicago, Illinois – The NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars remained undefeated against defending champions FC Kansas City on Saturday, bagging a 2-1 away win in the highly-anticipated blockbuster clash of the weekend. Sofia Huerta scored in her third consecutive match and defender Taryn Hemmings had the late game-winner for the visitors in meeting that had been delayed due to inclement weather and was played in pouring rain that didn’t let up at any point during the 90 minutes. Chicago nearly conceded a goal in the 7th minute, as shot-stopper Michele Dalton breathed a sigh of relief after being pressured by Sarah Hagen and attempting a clearance that bounced off the FCKC forward and rolled just wide of the right post. The Red Stars created their first quality chance in the 32nd minute. With a defender wrestling her for the ball, Arin Gilliland managed to sprint to the by-line and send in a low cross that was touched on frame by Jen Hoy and parried wide by goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart. Chicago would get on the board mere moments later, Vanessa DiBernardo swinging in a corner kick from the right that would see the 23-yearold earn her league-leading fourth assist. The ball was met inside the penalty are by rookie Huerta, who redirected it through traffic and inside the left post courtesy of an exquisite touch with her right foot. Huerta’s fifth strike of the season sent the reigning NWSL Player of the Week to the top of the NWSL goal-scoring charts, where she is tied with Washington’s Crystal Dunn. Home side Kansas City had a promising opportunity of its own in the closing stages, as a long ball long through ball released Hagen and the forward released a powerful, right-footed attempt from the top of the box that whistled wide of the far post. U.S. international Hagen continued to threaten

after the break, making a strong near-post run in the 52nd minute to get her foot on a cross from the right flank, only to see her redirect roll trickle just wide of the left post. Kansas City kept up the pressure and could have scored on either of a pair of 56th-minute cornes, the second of which saw Hagen smash the ball dangerously over the bar on a close-range volley at the far post. FCKC finally drew level in the 68th minute, Erika Tymrak sending in another corner from the left and fellow U.S. international Amy LePeilbet back-tracking to head the ball down and past surprised goalkeeper Dalton for a well-taken goal. The Red Stars showed a strong response to the equalizer, as Head Coach Rory Dames’ managed to keep their mighty opponents from taking control of the match and pushing for the lead. Instead, defender Hemmings gave Chicago all three points by nodding home the rebound following a Danielle Colaprico corner kick from the left and a header by center back Michelle Lomnicki that had been tipped against the post by netminder Barnhart. Kansas City’s only quality look in the closing stages was a Yael Averbuch rocket on a free-kick from 35 yards out, the Red Stars’ Dalton doing well to leave her feet and tip the ball over the frame. It would be the game’s final chance, as the visitors subsequently slowed down the pace and held on to a crucial victory that saw them increase their lead at the top of the NWSL standings. The Chicago Red Stars look to remain unbeaten through seven regular season games when they travel to take on current Shield holders Seattle Reign FC on Saturday, May 30. The club’s next home match is on June 20 against Washington Spirit. Single-game and season tickets for the 2015 campaign may be purchased by visiting www.chicagoredstars.com or by calling 773-698-6001.

CHARLESTON – Grace Cronin would do anything to win the 300-meter hurdles race at the Class 3A state meet May 23 and proved it. The Fenwick junior and Elmhurst resident led much of the race, but Belleville East’s Miya Dorsey caught her down the final stretch. In a final attempt to win, Cronin dove at the finish line. The end result was that Cronin lost the race by one one-hundredth of a second. Dorsey finished in 42.94 seconds and Cronin came in at 42.95 seconds. “I knew it was going to be really close so I just thought [to do] whatever I could to get first place and whatever I could to get 42. And I did get 42, so that’s pretty good for me,” Cronin said. “I’ve been working for 42 the entire season so I was very happy to get that.” Cronin also was second in the 110-meter hurdles. She finished in 14.42 seconds. A year ago, Cronin was second in the 110-meter hurdles, third in the 300 hurdles and sixth in the high jump in the Class 2A meet. This year, she was second in both hurdles races in Class 3A. Next year she’s gunning for state titles. “I’m coming back for that next year hopefully,” Cronin said. “I’ll work for that.”

Fast start not enough for York soccer By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – Alyssa Kovatchis knew York’s girls soccer team had to get off to a strong start, and she did something about it. Kovatchis scored goals six-and-a-half minutes apart in the first half to stake the Dukes to an early lead, but Hinsdale Central battled back and handed York a 3-2 loss in a Class 3A sectional semifinal game at Central on May 26. “First half we were going a little with the wind, so that was helpful,” Kovatchis said. “I knew we had to come out strong and set a good base and I thought that would hold up, but it didn’t work out that way.” Kovatchis got her left foot on a ball and put it inside the right post to open the scoring with 14:49 left in the first half. Then she tracked down the ball in the area off a restart and put the ball inside the left post for a 2-0 lead. After having a strong wind at their backs in the first half, the Dukes (13-6-2) and Red Devils switched sides in the second half, and the momentum switched, as well. Central

scored seven minutes into the second half, tied it midway through and scored the game-winner with 9:45 to play. “When we were up two goals, it looked like we sat back a little bit and they came out a little bit harder,” York head coach Don Vana said. “They went after the ball harder than we did. ... Kind of like what we did to them in the first half they did to us in the second half.” Despite the way the season ended, it was still a success for York. The Dukes won a regional title for the second straight year despite a litany of injuries that had them shorthanded for much of the season. “I would have liked to have all our players play in this game,” Vana said. “We miss Jes Bianchi and Kaylin Kenny, two starters for us that didn’t play, plus Ffyon Hund. Those are three girls that earned a lot of time for us. They’ve done an excellent job for us and it’s unfortunate they were hurt and not able to play.” “At one point we had seven Erica Benson - ebenson@shawmedia.com starters out,” Kovatchis said. “It was a tough battle, but we York’s Abby Horn (left) battles for possession of the ball May 26 in a got this far so it was a good sectional semifinal game against Hinsdale Central. The Dukes scored season.” twice in the first half but yielded three second-half goals in a 3-2 loss.

Knights ride offense to sectional final game By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com LISLE – Kaitlyn Falduto singled and later scored in the sixth inning, putting an exclamation point on IC Catholic’s 11-3 win against Westmont in a Class 2A sectional semifinal game. The Knights had 14 hits and scored multiple runs in four of six innings to make up for a 2-0 loss against Westmont in a sectional final last season. “I think this is huge just because we knew this was going to be a tough game and we came out. And we were ready,” Falduto said. The Sentinels took a 3-2 lead in the top of the third, but IC (26-5) went back on top in its half of the frame and never looked back. Jessica Conenna had two hits, two RBIs, two runs and earned the pitching win. Vanessa Godinez had two RBIs while Josie Lytton and Gabby Curran each scored twice. “Our bats came alive,” IC coach Frank Reaber said. “She’s a really good pitcher, and she beat us last year in the sectional final, so we worked on moving in the box and being more aggressive. And for the most part, every girl hit the ball.” IC advanced to the sectional title game at Benedictine University. The Knights will face Regina Dominican at 11 a.m. May 30 with a chance to move on to the supersectional June 1. The momentum gained from the semifinal win will help in the championship game. “We had a good game,” Reaber said. “This can carry over to Saturday.”
