Rep. Sorensen urges passage of suicide prevention act honoring Chadwick man

DIXON – U.S. Rep. Eric Sorensen, D-Rockford, is urging the U.S. House of Representatives to pass legislation honoring a Thomson prison corrections officer who died by suicide in March 2023.

“I rise today to honor the life of Blake Schwartz, a constituent of mine from Chadwick, Illinois, who lost his life to suicide two years ago, leaving behind a loving wife and a daughter that he never had a chance to meet,” Sorensen said April 8 in his address to House leadership. “Blake spent the last three years of his life as a corrections officer at the Thomson Correctional Center. I don’t think most of us understand how hard these law enforcement officers work, and for Blake, he did not have the resources when he was struggling, and he did not survive.”

Schwartz died March 24, 2023, at age 26, according to his obituary. He attended Sauk Valley Community College and earned a degree in criminal justice.

Free community meals in Fulton

U.S. House of Representatives by Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, an Iowa Republican, on Oct. 4 to provide funding to the Bureau of Prisons, states and localities to carry out mental health screenings and provide referrals to mental health care providers for certain corrections officers. The bill was referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary.

The Thomson prison, located in Carroll County, is a low-security federal correctional institution. It houses about 2,000 inmates, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons’ website.

Clinton Symphony Orchestra to perform April 26

Hundreds take part in Hands Off! rallies in area

An estimated 500 in Rock Falls, 400 in Oregon

Hundreds of people took part in two Hands Off! rallies in the area April 5 to let everyone know how they feel about recent actions and decisions by President Donald Trump and his billionaire consultant Elon Musk.

“People are showing up here today,” said Mae Furman of Rochelle, an organizer of the event around the historic Ogle County Courthouse in Oregon.

Furman and Jan Buttron of Chana organized the two-hour event. Both are members of Indivisible of Ogle County, the local chapter of the Indivisible Project network – a grassroots organization founded in 2016.

The Ogle County chapter is part of Indivisible Illinois, formed in 2017, and said it “reflects the Heart of the Midwest by promoting an equity agenda in pursuit of liberty and justice for all.”

Attendees at the Oregon rally held a wide variety of homemade signs criticizing Trump’s policies and recent executive orders eliminating programs and agencies that he said are designed to put an end to government waste.

Some held signs declaring “Hands Off Social Security” while others disagreed with the administration’s policies on immigration, Greenland, Canada and Ukraine. Others proclaimed Musk should be “fired” or “deported.”

In Sterling, more than 500 people gathered in front of Sterling’s Grandon Civic Center to protest.

“I am so excited to know that people in the Sauk Valley area truly care about this country and they’re willing to come out and tell the world,” Sarah Bingaman said. “Those who are not out today should be ashamed of themselves. Everyone should be out protesting today.”

Many in the crowd said they were worried the recent funding cuts, primarily fueled by claims of waste and fraud discovered by DOGE head Elon Musk, soon will make their way to their Social Security and Medicare benefits.

In his first speech to Congress on March 4, Trump said his administration was “identifying shocking levels of

incompetence and probable fraud in the Social Security program for our seniors.”

“Bringing DOGE in to let this man, who’s not elected, do anything he wants and destroy what we have is absolutely insane,” protester Joan Lemme said. “I think he’s trying to destroy our democracy.”

Among the crowd were several local educators who came to share their fears over Trump’s promise to dismantle the Department of Education. On March 20, Trump signed an executive order directing the Secretary of Education “to take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure of the Department of Education and return education authority to the states.”

Robin Boerjan is a retired educator who taught at Riverdale and East Coloma schools. She said teachers and schools already face regular financial challenges and any further cuts would be “devastating.”

“I think it’s going to hurt the most disadvantaged people, special education and class sizes,” Boerjan said. “There’s no doubt that we can make changes, that cuts can be made somewhere, but I think we need to be careful about what we’re cutting to make sure that doesn’t affect our students.”

Lori Meifel is retired and depends on Social Security to live. She is worried Trump’s claims of probable fraud in the program eventually could mean she will have less money to make it through the month.

Proceeds from restored antique tractor donated back to Forreston FFA

HAZELHURST – There was one very special sale April 5 at the Hazelhurst Spring Consignment Auction, all thanks to the generosity of a local farmer.

Sitting near the front of a row amid the hundreds of other pieces of farm machinery of various makes, models and specialties was a bright red antique tractor, a 1949 Case VAC to be specific, that was restored by Forreston FFA members last year and raffled as a fundraiser for the program.

Dave Myers, of Leaf River Farms in Adeline, was the lucky winner last fall and decided to put the tractor on the auction block at the spring sale with all proceeds donated back to the Forreston

FFA. Auctioneer Lenny Bryson of Polo capped off the deal when he announced the tractor would be sold free of the typical commission charged by the auction house.

Myers knew the VA series – the first Case row-crop tractor to use the Eagle Hitch – pretty well because his son, Justin, a senior at Forreston High School, was one of the FFA students who worked on the restoration.

“I was always joking with him that if I won it, I was going to sell it here [Hazelhurst] and donate it all back to the FFA,” Dave Myers said. “And then I won it.”

Justin, a John Deere aficionado, didn’t mind the tractor going to a new owner.

“Nah, it was the wrong color,” he

said, smiling.

Bryson started the bidding at $1,000 and the tractor sold for $2,000 to an online bidder.

The spring consignment sale has been held on 30 acres between Polo and Milledgeville – near the tiny hamlet of Hazelhurst – since the 1940s.

Sheryl Hopkins, of Public Auction Service in Polo, oversees all the clerking along with her husband, Lyle, and help from other family members.

Sheryl’s mother and father, Ruth and Ellery Shank, hosted the first sale on their farm site in the 1940s. It started as a venue for local farmers to buy and sell farm machinery. Now it’s held twice a year – once in the spring and once in the fall.

“must do” for some area farmers, allowing them to talk shop and maybe complain about the weather or catch up with old friends as they stroll by the rows of farm machinery, vehicles and other miscellaneous items.

The Polo Lions Club operated the main food booth in the center of the sale site. The covered building was a popular place for visitors to grab a hot dog, cheeseburger or pork chop sandwich and chat with friends and neighbors.

At the west side of the auction, the Ogle County Beef Producers sold their ever-popular ribeye steak sandwiches and burgers – freshly grilled on-site.

Miss Becky Kettler, a senior at Central College, is the college’s representative in the Miss Cheerleader USA Contest sponsored by Cypress Gardens, Florida. Kettler is a physical education major. She has been active in the Women’s Recreation Association, Pietenpol Cup competition, Phi Kappa Omicron and the Student Education Association. Kettler has been a cheerleader for four years.

More than 100 people were at Fulton City Hall to hear Mayor Wiersema outline detailed plans for dealing with the approaching flood crisis. Official predictions of a flood crest of 22.5 feet mean many parts of Fulton will be under water and some families, especially in the southern and eastern sections of the city, will be forced out of their homes.

At a special meeting of the City Council, a motion to double the salary of the

aldermen and raise the pay of the city treasurer was defeated. The special meeting was called by the finance committee.

Alderman Craig Smit made the motion to raise the aldermen’s salary from $25 to $50 a month and to raise the pay of the city treasurer from $950 to $1,000 a year.

Alderman Kenneth Ven Huizen seconded the motion, which received three yes votes and two no votes. The motion needed four yes votes to pass.

Loren Martindale of Fulton was presented an Outstanding Performance Award for exceptional performance of duties by Col. George Ford, commander at the Savanna Army Depot. Mr. Martindale transferred to Savanna Army Depot in January 1974 to assume the duties of civilian personnel officer. He has been a U.S. Civil Service employee since 1967.

April 17, 1985

Pastor Robert Vander Schaaf will be giving his farewell sermon April 28. He

has lived in Fulton longer than any other place. Pastor Bob, as he is known in the community, was ordained to the ministry of the Reformed Church in America at the Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan. He was a latecomer to the ministry after a career as a radio operator for the U.S. Navy for three and a half years and 12 years as the operator of a hatchery and feed business.

A new attraction of Dutch Days will be a boat show at the Windmill Marina. It will feature a large number of new boats, motors and accessories from area dealers. Several of the boat dealers and Windmill Marina are offering prizes to be awarded in a drawing.

Shirley Wierenga, owner of Shear Class Styling Salon, will hold a grand opening this week. The celebration will be at the new salon located at 1703 10th Ave.

Little lamb Morrison Food Pantry needs your help

MORRISON – As the Morrison Charitable Food Pantry finishes the first quarter of 2025, it, like many other organizations, is struggling to make a budget plan to stretch its funds.

The uncertainty of the effect of major budget cuts at the U.S. Department of Agriculture worries the pantry, our suppliers and our clients. The budget cuts will affect the free school lunch program and food donations to food banks, which filter down to food pantries.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program also is threatened by cuts and that will drive more families to visit their food pantry.

Food pantries have seen an uptick in sign-ups and are trying to plan for the probability of a larger numbers of clients. We are no exception, which is why we need your help. Monetary donations are needed to cover the cost of buying more food items to meet this need.

We have been heartened by past donations and are so appreciative of those who have stepped up.

As you start planning your gardens, remember we can receive fresh fruit and vegetables and hope you keep us in mind.

Last year, we had several gardeners who brought in excess tomatoes, apples, green beans,

radishes, rhubarb, etc., which were enthusiastically received by our clients. Fresh fruit and vegetables always are popular. Several people donated farm fresh eggs, which helps everyone stretch their meal preparations, along with beef, pork and venison.

Last year, the Morrison Charitable Food Pantry served 744 households and 2,078 people. As you can see, the need is there and is expected to grow this year.

The pantry is a 501(c)(3), which enables donors to claim a tax deduction. Please check with your tax preparer for advice before filing. The pantry does not receive any tax money from the city, county, state or federal governments. Instead, the pantry relies on donations from the private sector, such as yourself, to sustain its mission of easing food insecurity in Morrison.

All donations received stay in Morrison to help the people of Morrison.

Hillsdale’s annual Easter Egg Hunt takes place April

HILLSDALE – More than 60 children along with their parents and grandparents attended Hillsdale’s annual Easter Egg Hunt on April 12 at Hillsdale Park.

Mayor T.J. Francis, Village Clerk Jane Lundquist, Trustees Theresa Brooks (event coordinator), Joni Reiss, Amy Myrtue, Tonya Hanrahan and Lisa Nicholson and event coordinator Amanda Graham worked at the stations. There were four age groups for the egg hunts and fun photo ops with the Easter Bunny.

In addition to the candy-filled eggs, each child received an Easter bucket full of goodies and sweet treats and got to pick out a special prize – from sports and fishing gear to dolls and Legos. There was a bike raffle for a lucky boy and girl in each age category.

Rock Island County Deputy Tyler Reagan and members of the Hillsdale Fire Department helped with activities.

Judge: Dixon man will stay in jail pretrial

charged with attempted murder of 3 police officers

OREGON – A rural Dixon man charged with the attempted murder of three police officers at his residence in June 2024 will remain jailed despite extensive arguments made by the defense for his release.

Jonathon Gounaris , 32, is charged with four counts of attempted first-degree murder, three counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, three counts of aggravated battery and two counts of possession of a firearm without a firearm owner’s identification card, all of which stem from a June 12 standoff with police in the rural Dixon subdivision of Lost Lake.

Gounaris has pleaded not guilty to all charges and is being held in the Winnebago County Jail in Rockford.

Ogle County Judge John “Ben” Roe has denied Gounaris’ pretrial release about a dozen times, citing the seriousness of the charges and community safety concerns. Gounaris’ release initially was denied by Judge Anthony Peska at a detention hearing June 20, 2024.

On the afternoon of Monday, April 7, Gounaris appeared before Roe to hear his decision on the defense’s motion to reconsider detention. At the previous hearing March 17, Public Defender Michael O’Brien argued for Gounaris’ release in order for him to receive adequate mental health treatment. O’Brien asserted that Gounaris’ “delusional”

and “paranoid” mental state led to the June 12, 2024, standoff with police.

At 8:39 a.m. June 12, police were called to the residence with a warning that it could be a “suicide-by-cop” situation. The officers were informed that Gounaris had made suicidal and homicidal threats, Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said at a news conference that afternoon.

Shortly after officers arrived, the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office’s Emer -

gency Response Team was called. The ERT is made up of individuals from different agencies, including the sheriff’s office, Oregon and Byron police departments and SWAT medics from the Rochelle Fire Department.

Police attempted more than 60 phone calls to the residence and deployed a throw phone inside the home before breaching the door at 11:53 a.m.

Melissa Wiebenga, the city’s tourism director, coordinated the project.

A thunderstorm downed many trees on the Iowa side of the Mississippi River. The Illinois side mostly was spared except for River City Storage, owned by Sue Olsen, on Highway 84 near River City Fencing. It got hit pretty hard. Parts of the building were nowhere to be seen, having been carried away by what must have been a small tornado.

warrant from Texas accusing him of domestic violence.

The April 5 rally was one of several recent protests in Sterling against the Trump administration.

Motorists who traversed the busy intersection of state Routes 64 and 2 through Oregon’s downtown were encouraged to honk their horns in support. A couple of pickup trucks with Trump flags in their beds passed through the intersection revving their engines during the event and one Tesla vehicle was booed as it drove past.

Buttron, an attorney, said Trump is breaking the laws of democracy.

O’Brien’s argument for release largely hinged on his claim that arguments pertaining to the circumstances of the officers’ entry to the home were not made at the initial detention hearing. At that hearing, Gounaris was represented by former Ogle County Public Defender William Gibbs, who has since left that position.

In court March 17, O’Brien questioned the officers’ use of force, describing it as a “very violent entry into the home” consisting of “several armed officers kicking down a door.”

Instead, he said that the call was made to police because Gounaris’ mother was concerned for her son’s mental health. Officers’ subsequent response was a “very funny looking welfare check,” O’Brien said.

Assistant State’s Attorney Heather Kruse disagreed.

Winnebago County State’s Attorney J. Hanley independently reviewed the ERT’s use of force in September 2024. He determined the deputies acted in accordance with the law because they only fired their weapons after being shot at by Gounaris.

In Roe’s ruling April 7 he said, “the totality of arrest ... are things the court has already considered.”

At the March 17 hearing, as with many previous hearings, O’Brien outlined many conditions for release that he said would mitigate the risk to the public, such as receiving mental health treatment or staying with family in McHenry County, among others.

O’Brien said Gounaris has begun taking medication while in custody, which has improved his mental health.

Kruse disagreed with those conditions and said Gounaris has a history of refusing to get treatment for his mental health, including a dislike of taking medications.

She said he’s still a danger while “he’s taking unspecified medications for an unspecified mental health condition.”

On April 7, Roe said “mental health is certainly an issue,” but he agreed with Kruse that the court has not been given any “specific diagnosis that would lead to a specific medication” and that Gounaris disliked taking medication in the past.

Roe also rejected the prospect of Gounaris staying with family in McHenry County because there’s been “no specific testimony or evidence showing what the families capabilities are” in dealing with his mental health.

“These are very serious offenses” resulting in serious injuries, Roe said.

During the gunfire exchange June 12, Ogle County Sheriff’s Lt. Jason Ketter was shot in the face, Deputy Tad Dominski was shot in the arm, Tyler Carls of the Rochelle Fire Department was shot in the torso and Gounaris was shot in the stomach.

That day, Dominski and Carls were treated at OSF Saint Katharine Medical Center – which at the time was KSB Hospital – in Dixon and released later that evening. Ketter was flown to OSF Medical Center in Rockford, underwent surgery and was released from the hospital June 14.

Gounaris also was treated at KSB and then booked into the Winnebago County Jail on June 18.

“I do not find that there’s substantial change in circumstance to release the defendant in any capacity,” Roe said April 7.

A status hearing was set for 1 p.m. April 28, during which Gounaris will no longer be represented by O’Brien since he’s leaving the public defender’s office.

“Gounaris would still maintain his general position for release,” O’Brien said.

The April hearing also is the deadline for the state to respond to O’Brien’s motion to “appoint an expert and/or reimburse defense costs to assist in presenting a change of venue request,” according to the motion filed March 6.

In his motion, O’Brien argues the court should allow and pay for a company to “explore the likelihood that this case should be tried” in a different county because there is a “prejudice against” Gounaris and he cannot receive a fair trial in Ogle County.

A change-of-venue motion typically asks the judge to move the trial to a different location. Those motions usually cite reasons that the filing party believes would prevent a fair trial in the county in which the case was filed. Pretrial publicity often is listed as a reason for a change-of-venue motion.
