ESCAPE TO THE OUTDOORS Epic trails to conquer by bike or on foot By KELSEY O’CONNOR
Ready to hit the trails? Kane, Kendall and McHenry counties offer a plethora of unique options. Whether you’re looking for a serene park for a leisurely stroll or rugged terrain for a rigorous workout, here is a roundup of the top trails to bike and hike in Kane, Kendall and McHenry counties:
KENDALL COUNTY
BIKE Get in touch with your rugged, outdoorsy side at Saw Wee Kee Park. The park, located along the south shore of the Fox River, offers more than 134 acres of land, including the wildlife habitats of deer and bald eagles. It’s also home to a 5.8-mile, loop known as the Saw Wee Kee Trail – a hilly, unpaved trek built for hikers and mountain bikers. With some steep climbs, many areas of the trail are rated as difficult. 7050 Sundown Lane, Yorkville
HIKE A walk through Silver Springs State Park is a picturesque way to spend an afternoon. The 45-acre restored prairie area gives visitors a sense of the original landscape of the state before it was settled. The Fox River winds through this lush natural area, which also is home to several small man-made lakes. An easy, but scenic, 4-mile trail follows along the river and through wooded patches, giving hikers a glimpse of wildflowers, songbirds and waterfowl. Don’t forget to stop and see the parks namesake – a glittering silver spring that flows year-round. 13608 Fox Road, Yorkville
KANE COUNTY
HIKE The Great Western Trail comprises 17 miles of an abandoned railway stretching from St. Charles to the DeKalb County Line. The trail crosses small streams and wetlands. Visitors also will traverse quiet stretches of prairie, where they can view an array of native flora and fauna. The plethora of wide-open spaces makes this trail a serene trip.
BIKE The best way to explore the Fox River Trail is by bike. This will allow you to appreciate most of the trail’s 40-plus scenic miles that follow the Fox River. The trail also crosses historic railroad lines, forest preserves and charming downtown areas. There are plenty of spots to stop along the way, whether it’s for a bite to eat at a local diner, a fishing break along a dam or to explore a nearby historic landmark. Bike trail stop/start points: Willis McCullough Park, W. Illinois Street, Aurora; Riverfront Park, 201 N. Harrison St., Algonquin
MCHENRY COUNTY
BIKE Glacial Park Conservation Area features 8 miles of trails, including a 5-mile stretch of the Prairie Trail that runs along the east side of the park. The most popular natural site in the county, Glacial Park encompasses more than 3,400 acres. Guests can ride along the shores of the Nippersink Creek, picnic at the outdoor stone amphitheater and stop by the historic PowersWalker home for a glimpse of history. 6313 Harts Road, Ringwood
HIKE Veteran Acres Park is home to a short trail, but visitors can extend their hike by exploring the adjacent areas, such as Sterne’s Wood and Wingate Prairie. The trail meanders through nearly 300 acres of a beautifully restored natural area, where hikers can view wetlands, native plant species and rare gravel hill prairie. Part of the trail lies on hilly terrain, left behind by retreated glaciers thousands of years ago. 431 N. Walkup Ave., Crystal Lake
End points: LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve at Dean Street/CR 53, St. Charles; Old State Road at E. State Street/SR 64, Sycamore

Rules of the road with BRUCE HEIDLAUF
Bicycles have been around since the early 1800s, so why do we still have so many questions about the rules of the road? It may be fair to assume that quite a few people already know on what side of the road to ride and that it’s important to always wear a helmet. That’s a great place to start, but by reviewing these simple rules, both drivers and cyclists can create safer roadways. • It is the law for cars to give bicycles 3 feet of clearance when passing. It’s all about safety. Be patient and courteous. After all, your neighbor on a bike pays taxes for the roads too. • Bikes ride with traffic – not against it. This too is the law. Riding in the same direction gives drivers more time to see the cyclist coming, not to mention the fact that they are conditioned to scan for traffic traveling in the same direction. If a motorist is turning right at an intersection, he or she is not anticipating a fast-moving, wrong-way-moving bicycle approaching from the right. • Bikes do not belong on sidewalks. Sidewalks are for pedestrians. • Why don’t cyclists ride on the trails? Again, it’s all about safety. Trails can be congested with dog walkers, children and runners that can wander from
side to side. Cyclists travel at a rate of speed that simply isn’t safe to be weaving through these obstacles. • When stopping at a traffic light, a cyclist should stay behind a motorist and not in a car’s blind spot. Bikes should stay visible to cars on all sides. When the light turns green don’t pass a motorist on the right – assume he or she may be turning. • Never assume that a driver sees a cyclist. A cyclist should make eye contact with a car driver pulling out from a side street before crossing in front of him. Wave if necessary to confirm that you are seen, and don’t run red lights. • Don’t hug the curb too closely. If a cyclist is too close to the curb it doesn’t leave room to avoid potholes or debris when a car is passing (even if a motorist is giving a cyclist 3 feet of clearance).
• Avoid parked cars opening doors. When riding on a road with parked cars, a rider should stay far enough to the left to avoid an unexpected opening of a car door. • Do not ride three or more cyclists across. Cars are faster and want to get around a cyclist quickly. Be polite. Share the road. • Use your hand signals. Show everyone that you paid attention in Scouts, and let the other riders and cars know when you intend to turn or stop. • Wear lights at night. About 60 percent of bike collisions are caused by cyclists riding at night without lights. Bruce Heidlauf is the owner of Mill Race Cyclery in Geneva.

Adventure awaits LONG-DISTANCE TRIPS CREATE LIFELONG MEMORIES By ALLISON HORNE
It’s easy to remember the first time you learned to ride a bike as a kid, but bike experiences don’t have to be limited to childhood memories. As adults, day or overnight trips can provide adventures that are sure to create memories for years to come. Matt Knowles has always had a passion for bikes, and, more than 15 years ago, he turned that passion into a career when he started running a bike company out of his garage. Now, he’s a co-owner of the bike shop All Spoked Up in Batavia and Aurora. Knowles has passed his love of biking to his three sons, Nate, Will and Colin, who race competitively on a national stage and are constantly cycling together. Last year, Knowles went on a family trip, which included riding bikes in 15 different states – and racing in six – across the country. He has a 30-foot camping trailer that the family lives out of for most of the summer.
“Day trips are the easiest to get used to, especially since you have to get used to being on a bike for six hours,” he says, adding that long-distance options are plentiful in the Chicago suburbs. “We’re totally spoiled with our bike paths here because they’re completely awesome day rides.” For anyone wanting to stay local, the Gilman trail is an 11.5-mile trail that runs from the Waubonsee Community College to US 30/Hill Road in Montgomery, and the 26.1mile Prairie Trail runs through McHenry from the WisconsinIllinois border to the Souwanas Trail in Algonquin. There are more than 100 other miles of trails accessible from the Prairie Trail, including the Hebron Trail, Ridgefield Trace, Fox River Trail, Great Western Trail and the Illinois Prairie Path. from Chicago to New Buffalo, Michigan, in June.
“The Gilman Trail is a great ride – you can ride the river trail almost all of the way to Wisconsin,” Knowles says.
If you’re worried about setting out on your own, there are often local, organized trips for But for those just getting into those interested in riding with a long-distance cycling, Knowles group. One of the most popular suggests that newbie adventure is the Le Tour de Shore – a cyclists “start with day trips.” two-day, 100-mile charity ride
“A bike gives you the ability to go on a longer ride where you can adventure and tour, and see a lot more of the world,” Knowles says. “You get an adventure, exercise, and get to see other parts of the country you wouldn’t see in a car. It’s the reason we all do them.”

The scoop on sweet treats along the trails By ALLISON HORNE
“Ice cream and summer go hand-in-hand,” Batavia Creamery owner Kirk Jansons says. And even though water may be an instant thirstquencher when you’re on a bike ride, there’s nothing that satisfies the taste buds quite like ice cream. Bike trails are aplenty in Kane, Kendall and McHenry counties, and – fortunately – so are ice cream shops. From custard and soft-serve cones to milkshakes and sundaes, here are a few pit-stop-worthy spots for sweet treats along the trails:
KANE COUNTY BATAVIA CREAMERY 4 N. Island Ave., Batavia www.bataviacreamery.com | 630-482-3729 If Kirk Jansons knows anything, it’s ice cream. Jansons has been in the same location for more than 25 years – first as a Baskin Robbins franchise before opening the Batavia Creamery in 2007. Located on the west side of the Fox River Trail, which travels through Batavia, the outdoor patio overlooks the river and is a great spot to hang out at after a long day on a bike. “It’s a great place to hang and refuel,” Jansons says. “It’s a great pit stop.” With more than 100 flavors constantly rotating, Jansons notes that there’s always something new and different for customers to try. He also sells sorbets, non-dairy products and always has at least one vegan selection available. His current favorite flavors are Heavenly Hazelnut or Cappuccino Crunch, but he says that peanut butter and chocolate is an all-time favorite. EARLY LIGHT CAFÉ 11 E. State St., Geneva earlylightcafe.com | 630-296-6690 Nestled along the banks of the Fox River in Geneva is Early Light Café, a family-favorite and
great spot to stop for a quick treat after a long day of bike riding. As a part of the Mill Race Cyclery, bike enthusiasts can do some shopping in addition to getting a snack. Ice cream options include soft serve ice cream cones, milkshakes, affagato, ice cream sundaes, and – for those looking for something more substantial – there is a full menu available, as well.
KENDALL COUNTY FOXY’S ICE CREAM 131 E. Hydraulic St., Yorkville foxysicecream.com | 630-385-2716 There’s something to be said about the aesthetic of eating ice cream outdoors along the Fox River, while hanging in the shade at Foxy’s Ice Cream. From Super Sundaes (think Worms ’n’ Dirt, Bears on the Moon, Chocolate Lover’s Dream) to parfaits, milkshakes or just a regular scoop of ice cream, this spot is not to be missed. DAIRY HUT ON MAIN 121 Main St., Oswego | 630-554-6800 Spend the day riding bikes by the Fox River and finish your ride with a dipped cone or a hot fudge sundae at Dairy Hut on Main. With plenty of outdoor seating, this one-stop shop is one of those places that can definitely bring back memories from your childhood. -Continued on page 28 FOX RIVER TRAIL GUIDE 2017

Located just off the Prairie Trail in Algonquin, the Riverbottom Ice Cream Company provides both sweet treats and a variety of refreshing coffee drinks. For lovers of both, they can combine them, too. The handcrafted gourmet flavors constantly rotate at the shop, so ice cream-lovers are in for a new treat with each visit. DARI 10011 Main St., Hebron | 815-648-2204 Since the 1960s, this local ice cream stand has been a staple in the Hebron community. From ice cream to hamburgers, hotdogs and other treats, Dari is a must-stop for anyone riding a bike in the area. The stand is located near the Hebron Trail, which connects to the Prairie Trail through the North Branch Conservation Area. VAN’S FROZEN CUSTARD 16 E. Main St., East Dundee vansfrozencustard.com | 847-836-8267 Since 2007, Van’s has been serving fresh custard, shakes, floats and more. With an ideal location – just steps from the Fox River and the Fox River Trail – Van’s makes for a perfect stop. Be sure to check Van’s calendar for the flavor of the day. RIVERSIDE CHOCOLATE FACTORY 2102 IL-120, McHenry riversidechocolatefactory.com 815-344-6040 Situated near Moraine Hills State Park, the Riverside Chocolate Factory is a little bit off the bike route, but definitely worth the stop if you’re in the area. It’s known for its chocolate, hand-dipped fruit, turtles and fudge.

TOWN BOUND QUAINT COMMUNITIES, LIVELY CITIES TO STOP ALONG THE FOX
The time to find the perfect path for your next cycling adventure is here! There is a plethora of fun to experience along the Fox River – on and off the trails. The Fox River Trail – which runs through Kendall, Kane and McHenry counties (and beyond) – has a slew of stop-worthy downtown areas that would make a great destination on any cycling adventure. Here are several trailside towns to consider: ■ AURORA Cruise to RiverEdge Park this summer to catch Blues on the Fox on June 16 and 17, with performances Friday evening and all day Saturday. What started as a street fair in 1996 exploded into a colorful, world-renowned festival, drawing blues fanatics from around the globe. www.enjoyaurora.com/Events. ■ GENEVA Charming Victorian-style homes and historic buildings are part of a downtown area that boasts more than 140 specialty shops and eateries. Cycle along State Street to Third Street, parking your bike at one of the “art sculpture” bike racks, to visit one-of-kind shops. Wine, chocolate and ice cream, neighborhood pubs and award-winning restaurants – it’s all here! www.genevachamber.com ■ ST. CHARLES Ride through prairies, forests and the Fox River Valley, before making a stop in the downtown historical district. Enjoy grab-and-go fare with sandwiches and soups from Smitty’s on the Corner. Or the boutiquey Hotel Baker makes for a nice resting point. Also, shops with cycling gear and that offer service and repair are aplenty in these parts. www.visitstcharles.com ■ ELGIN Elgin’s Gail Borden Public Library hosts a constant stream of events, from Elgin Symphony Orchestra concerts and lunch-hour film screenings to various classes, such as “Brewing by the River: Beer 101.” Head to Festival Park for Elgin’s Movies in the Park or the adjacent Grand Victoria Casino for its Summer Concert Series. Art and Soul on the Fox is a juried art festival in August that has live music, kids’ entertainment and food trucks.
RiverEdge Park in Aurora | Photo by Tom King ■ ALGONQUIN Dine riverside at Algonquin’s family-owned Port Edward Restaurant, which has been around for more than 50 years. Touted as “one of mid America’s most unusual restaurants,” the eatery is known for its seafood and old-world atmosphere. Then head to Scorched Earth Brewing Company, named after the prairie fires that were native to this area, for an after-dinner pint, such as the summer seasonal Sweetie Pie – brewed with local strawberries and rhubarb – or the Hickster – an American cream ale. Feel like staying the night? Try the Victorian Rose Garden Bed and Breakfast with its wrap-around porch and awaken to the aroma of a freshly cooked breakfast. www.visitmchenrycounty.com

Join the club Goals and a common interest: cycling, fitness clubs bring people together By KEVIN DRULEY
A triathlon encompasses running, biking and swimming, but the St. Charles-based training group Girls Gone Tri unabashedly incorporates each at members’ chosen speeds.
“It’s basically learning to train right,” Schirtzinger says. “We’re big on the balance between health and fitness and to be sort of a life skill, also.”
“We have a lot of women who join who don’t have a bike, don’t know how to swim and couldn’t run to their mailbox,” says coordinator Christine Schirtzinger. “And that’s our whole crux, is to support women, empower them to the best of their ability, support them in their goals … whatever their goals may be.”
Members of another Bike Rack training group, Valley Velo, understand this premise at an accelerated level. Schirtzinger laughs when mentioning that the group refers to itself, goodnaturedly, as “the non-competitive competitive athletes.”
Schirtzinger is involved with other bicycle training groups as director and coach at the Performance Center at The Bike Rack, 2930 Campton Hills Road, St. Charles. No matter her clientele, she always stresses the same principles: Outdoor activity is for everyone, and there should be no barrier to getting started – especially as the weather starts to get nice in the spring. Although Girls Gone Tri features some competitive athletes, as well as those who participate exclusively in one of triathlon’s disciplines (running, swimming or cycling), Schirtzinger highlights its appeal to those who want to develop a base in fitness. Ultimately, it can be a gateway to bigger things, as Schirtzinger and The Bike Rack’s other certified coaches strive to progressively build upon the education they provide to group members.
34
Schirtzinger turned slightly more serious when discussing Valley Velo’s mission to show that it counters the perception that road bike groups are ultra-cliquey. “We wanted to really break that stereotype and just love to ride our bikes,” Schirtzinger says. An “A,” “B” and “C” group each leave The Bike Rack at the same time, with the “B” and “C” groups often taking shorter routes back to the finish, but the three groups often finish around the same time. Most routes traverse the nearby Great Western Trail. “I think the location really helps when you’re going out from The Bike Rack just to get out west in a very safe manner. … It’s a real, great way for people to get out west,” Schirtzinger says. “When you can get away from that traffic and get out west, it’s a great place to start.”

At press time, The Bike Rack was finalizing meeting days and times for various groups. For more information, call 630-740-8060. Schirtzinger says that the fee for a majority of the organization’s training offerings is a $25 donation. Schirtzinger notes that rider safety was paramount to The Bike Rack. “Be visible and make sure that you have a tail light 24/7,” she says. “Under lights or sunlight – doesn’t matter when – you should always ride with that tail light. That really makes a difference. You can get them USB rechargeable. It can be the best piece of equipment that you have that goes on your bike. … Wearing those visible clothes or riding in a group are just things that are so important to do, so it’s not to overlook that.”

Cast away FISHING HOLES FOR AVID ANGLERS By KEVIN DRULEY
The ponds, lakes and rivers of Kane, Kendall and McHenry counties are open for fishing. Anglers need only grab their poles, gear and bait – and, more than likely, some documentation. Fishing licenses are required for those ages 16 and older at a cost of $15. Licenses are available online – www.dnr.illinois.gov – and can be purchased at most sporting goods stores. Here’s a roundup of some local spots ready for fishing:
KANE COUNTY
MCHENRY COUNTY
