TheFultonHighSchoolClassof1962 heldtheir 60th classreuniononSaturday,Sept.17,attheFulton CountryClub.

Therewere21classmembersinattendancewith 33peopleenjoyingabuffet dinnerandasocialtime. GarryMedemaservedasMCandgave awelcomeand prayerbeforethemeal.

PrizeswereawardedtoDonnaBielemaSchaverof Texasfortravelingthefarthest,LindaWierengaBalk forhavingthemostgreat-grandchildren(12),Judy DykstraHamstraforhavingtheyoungestgrandchild (7yearsold),RichardHolesingerforhavingworked at thesame job thelongest(58yearsfarming)and RogerFietforsendinginthefirstreservation.

Timewasspentrememberingthoseof theclass whohavepassedawayandrecallingmemoriesofformerteachersand eventsthroughhighschoolyears. Abookletwithnewsfromclassmatesand arosterof namesand addresseswas preparedbythereunion committeeandgiventoeachclassmember.

AsocialtimeforclassmemberswasonSept.16at thehomeofRichandShariDamhoffHuizinga.Itwas anenjoyabletimeofrenewingfriendshipsandreminiscing.

Sand Prairie picked to provide broadband to ‘every corner of rural Whiteside County’

MORRISON–SandPrairie,aservice unitofJo-CarrollEnergy,wasapproved Tuesdaynightasthebroadbandservice providerforWhitesideCounty.

TheWhitesideCountyBoardvoted 23-0onaplanthatwilldeploy1,000miles offiberbroadbandtomorethan8,000 addressesandserve21,000residents reaching“everycornerofrural WhitesideCounty,”countyboardChairman JamesDuffysaid.

Theprojectisestimatedtocostmore than$70million.WhitesideCountyis committing$3millionfromAmerican RescuePlanActfunds.

Duffycalledapprovalofthebroadbandplananimportantmilestonefor thecounty,comparingittorailroad expansionofthe19thcenturyorthe development of theinterstatehighway systemofthe20thcentury.

Thedeployment“willkeepthecounty anditsbusinessescompetitiveintoday’s globalenvironment,itwillprovideresi-

dentswithanupgradetotheirqualityof lifewhetheritsremotework,education orhealthcare andgreateraccessto entertainmentoptions,”hesaid.

Jo-CarrollEnergyisanonprofit distribution cooperative formed in 1939 that isbasedin Elizabeth.TheSandPrairie broadbanddivisionwascreated in 2008. Accordingtothecompany’sFacebook page,itcelebratedaddingits3,000thfiber internetcustomeronSept.8.

MikeCasper,Jo-CarrollEnergypresidentandCEO,said,“Welookforwardto working withthecountytoaccelerate thebuildoutofhigh-speedfiberinternet servicetohomes,businesses andcommunitiesthroughoutWhitesideCounty.”

Jo-CarrollEnergywillapplyfor matchinggrantfundsfortheWhiteside Countyproject.

Theabsenceofreliableandaffordable broadbandhasbeenevidentforawhile. DuringtheCOVID-19shutdown,the impactwasmagnified.

GaryCamarano,directorofthecounty’seconomicdevelopmentdepartment, saidtheproject, whencompleted,will resolveshortcomingsindigitalcommunications.Camaranosaiditwillallow thecounty“tocompeteinanewdigital

economythatallowsmoreandmoreIllinoisanstowork,live,learnandrecreate wherevertheychose.”

An18-membercommitteemetfor14 weekstodiscussconnectivitygoals, methodsandbestpractices.Itresearched internetserviceprovidersandprovided recommendations.

AccelerateIllinois–acooperative effortofIllinoisOfficeofBroadband, UniversityofIllinoisExtensionandBentonInstituteforBroadbandandSociety –werepartnersinthecounty’splanning.

WhitesideCountyEconomicDevelopmenthassaidthemainobstacleto obtainingbroadbandhadbeenthatforprofitprovidersdidnotviewthemarket aseconomicallyviable,leavingrural communitiesinnorthwestIllinois largelyunderserved.

Theresultwillbetheequitable deploymentofareliablefiberbroadband networkacrossthecounty,theavailabilityofbroadbandaccesstotheentire countyandananswertothebroadband inequities thatexistinthecounty.

ThenextstepforthecountyandSand Prairieistoconductengineeringstudies andsubmitgrantapplications.Installationcouldtakeuptofiveyears.

The mostnotablecharacteristicis involuntarymovementssuchasjerkingorwrithing,otherwiseknownas chorea.Themusclesmaybecomevery rigid,andbalance,postureandwalkingcanbesignificantlyimpacted.Even eyemusclemovementmaybequite slow.Speechandswallowingdifficultiescommonlyareseen.Voluntary movementalsoisaffectedsignificantly, makingtasksdifficult.

Thecognitiveportioninvolvesproblemsfocusing,organizingandprioritizing.Justasmusclesmayberigid,so maymentalactivity.Impulsecontrolis oftendiminished,whichmayleadto

SaukValleyCommunityCollege signedaneducationprogramagreementwithWestern IllinoisUniversitytohelptryto offsetthewidespreadteacher shortage.

Theagreementallowsstudentsreceivinganassociate degreeofartsaftertwoyearsat SVCCtothenearnabachelorof sciencedegreeinelementary educationlocallythroughtwo yearsofinstructionprovided byWesternIllinoisUniversity professors.

“Thisagreementwillaidin thismissionbyproviding accesstoabachelor’sdegree withoutrelocatingoutofthe SaukValleyarea,thusgrowing apoolofqualifiedcandidatesto filllocalteachingpositions,” accordingtoacollegenews release.

Aftercompletingtheir degreeatSVCC,studentsoptingintothisprogramwillpartakeinbaccalaureatecourseworkledbyWIUinstructorsin

acombinationofdeliveryformats includingonline,hybrid orface-to-faceonSVCC’scampus.

Studentswillreceivetheir bachelor’sdegreefromWIU whileremainingonSVCC’s campus.Thecourseswillbe offeredtoSVCCstudentsand alumniatthecurrentWIUtuitionratepercredithour.

Theballbouncedjustrightforthe Mustangstostartthenight,butwhenit matteredmost,itbouncedawayfromthe handsofreceiverChaseNewmanon a tightlycontestedchanceintheendzone onafourth-downplaywithmereseconds leftand Morrisontrailingbyfour.

Sherrardtookoverpossessionofthe ball,andafter akneeldown,theTigers also tookpossession oftheirfirstwinin13 games.
