Melton, a Lanark native,was a Jo DaviessCountysheriff’sadministrative lieutenant and served in that depart mentfor 17 yearsbefore taking the job as Morrison’stopcoponFeb,1,2009.

He said he’slooking forward to a new challengeandhad beenconsideringthe cityadministrator’srole fora while.

“It was always in theback of my mind throughmyexperienceworkingwith city administration,”he said Sept. 27. “I wasn’t expecting Barry to leave this soon,butIwasofferedtheopportunity to be the actingcityadministrator. Ilike the administrative part of it, the plan ningandsoforth,andit’ssomethinga little different.

“I’ve been in law enforcement more than31yearsandit’stimetotrysomethingdifferent.”

As city administrator, heplans to tackle the city’s parks and recreation program.

“That’s been in conversation and debate for as long as I’ve been here and so I hope to improve that program and what it offers to our community,” he said. “We need more volunteerism and

peopleto stepupand help.”

Melton said he had been looking for wardtoservingon thecounty board.

“Ijustdidn’tseethiscoming,”he said.

SoenksenwashiredinMorrisonin 2001andthenwenttoworkfortheFul tonPoliceDepartment foraboutthree yearswhileworkingparttimeforMori son.HecamebacktoMorrisonfull-time in2011.

Soenksengraduated in1995from Clinton(Iowa)HighSchoolandserved in theCoastGuardfrom1997-2001.He took afew yearsto findhimselfbefore landinginlawenforcement,hesaid.

Planetarium wows Riverdale students

River Valley District Library and Cordova District Librarysponsoreda space-themedactivity atRiverdale Elementary Schoolin Port Byron on Friday, Sept 30 Mobile Ed Productions broughtagiant inflatable planetarium to the gym for 30-minute learning sessions with third through fifth grade students. The programfeatured movingimages of stars, constellations and positions ofthe planets.
