Cysticfibrosisisararediseaseaffectingaboutoneoutofevery2,000Caucasians.Therecessivenatureofthegeneis partiallyresponsibleforitsrarity.Formerly,thisconditionwasfatalformost beforetheiradultyears.Nowwith improvementsintreatment,manyare livingwellintoadulthood Improved diagnosticmeasuressomedaymayallow ustodiagnosethismorereadilyinthe neonatal stateaswellasprenatal.

Theconditionmaystrikeanumberof organsystems,mostnotablytherespira-

tory system, leading to repeated infec tionsand evenelderlydevelopment of emphysema Because resistance is built up with certain groups of organisms, this is ultimately one of the major causes behindthe prematuredeaths.

Next,thepancreasisaffected,which leadstopoorenzymeproduction,thus poordigestion,diarrheaandmalabsorptionsyndromes.TheGIsystemalsomay beaffected,andthereisahigherincidenceofgallstones.Reproductionistypicallyaffectedaswell.Inaddition,the sweatglandsandsalivaryglandsalso arealteredintheirproduction.
