Thiswasthefirst yearforPointPleasantCemetery,where37wreathswereplaced.

AFultonhomenearthewatertower, aglowfortheseason,maynothavethe mostlightsforChristmas,butitwins theawardforthelongestrunningdisplay.RoyandMaryJo Nelson have beendecorating theirhomeat105 NinthSt.foraslongasthey’vebeen there,andit’samustsee forthose on thehuntforholidaylights.

Thedisplayisamixtureofoldand new,withafewitemsaddedeachyear tomixitup.Thelightsaretimedtogo onat5p.m.andturnoffafewhours laterat10, since thekidsshouldbein bedbythen,Roysaid.Hekeepsthe parameterlightsonuntilearlymorningsincedeerusedtogettangledup andknockthemover.

Royhasbeendecoratinghisfamily homesforChristmaseachyearfor morethan70years,butfirstlearned thetradewithhisgrandpawhenhe was10.HisfamilymovedtoFultonin 1952andhehelpedtakeontheannual tradition.Inthoseearlydays,hehadto getcreativewiththelightstringssince onebadbulbwouldruinawhole strand.Hefiguredoutthatbycutting thestrandupandaddingmorewire andtwoextrabulbs,he’dgetmorevoltageandlightsthatwouldlastlonger.

HeandMaryJomovedintotheir currenthomein1976andeveryyear sincethehousehasbeenlitupforthe season.Roytypicallystarts around Thanksgiving,thoughnowadaysit takesaboutaweektogetthedisplayup andrunningsinceheworksafew hoursaday.He’snotallowedtogetup ontheeavesanymore,perhiswife’s orders,butthere’splentyoflightsto stringupelsewhere.

Thedisplayfeaturesavarietyof multi-coloredlightsandfigures,vintageblowmolds,Santaandreindeer figures,akids’ choir,inflatablesand movingcolorsonthehouse.Royestimatesabout5,000modernlightsforhis

display.Thewestsideofthehomeis decoratedforchildren,andthesouth sideshowcasesthereasonfortheseasonwithaNativityscene,church buildingandStarofBethlehem.

Onmanynights, anddependingon theweather,RoywilldonhisSantasuit andsitattheendofthedriveway,wavingand passingoutcandycanesto thosewhostoptoseethelights.Hesees thekidsofthekidswhosawhisdisplaysyearsago,andmanyteensstop byforselfieswithSanta.Church groupsstopbytosingcarols,andtheir homehasbecomeadestinationforfamiliesbundledupinthecardriving aroundtoseeallthelightsintown.

Seeingthejoyinkidsiswhyhedoes ityearafteryear.Helaughsashe recallsstoriesthroughtheyear,like onechildwhowasconvincedthat SantaClausactuallylivesthere.Othershadtostopandturnaround,convincedhewasamovingSantamannequin.“It’sverysatisfying.Ijustloveit,” Roysaid.

Yearsago,thecouple usedtohost ChristmasinJulyparties.MaryJois nowjustascontenttodecorateinside thehome,withseasonaldecoroferas pastandpresent.TheirChristmastree hasold-fashionedornaments andtinsel,andthereareroomsalldeckedout andreadyfortheirdaughterand granddaughtertovisitfromMichigan.

Royretired fromtheCityofFulton andMaryJoformerlyworkedinsocial servicesatHarborCrestHome.Now retired,Royhastimetodevotetohis interests,suchasdecoratingoutside theFultonPresbyterianChurchand volunteeringatthewindmill,even appearingas“MillerClaus”attheFultonChristmasWalk.

TheChristmaslightswillbeupuntil theNewYear,andthenit’sbackto storageinthe“mancave”andshedfor anotheryear.Thecouplewillbewatchingfornew itemstoaddnextyear,as thetraditionwillcontinue aslongas theylivethere.

Smiddysaidhispoemis meantto showhowblindrageandactioncan leadtounforeseenconsequencesand results.Thestorytellsofayoungboy whowishestosavetheworld.Heseeks todosobynegotiatingbetweenthe frontlinesofwar,butonhisrushfrom onelinetotheother,oneoftheraining bulletscaughtthepoet,killinghim. Thefiringceasedasthesoldierslooked uponthefallenteenwhomtheyhadno intentionofkillingbutdiedbecauseof theirblindness.
