Story tips
eshields@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Before even crossing off a day on the new 2015 calendar, there are already plenty of stories brewing in Glen Ellyn. Here’s a look at the headlines to watch for in 2015:
1. Butting heads What we know: The College of DuPage was under intense public scrutiny for the latter half of 2014. An email from college President Robert Breuder leaked, suggesting trustees publicly lobby for $20 million in state funds they didn’t necessarily need. The Board of Trustees censured a

WATCH LIST member for providing inaccurate information to the public about the email. The Faculty Association voted no confidence in Breuder. Watchdog groups have pored through financial documents seeking further wrongdoing. What’s next: The college will likely remain in the spotlight at least through April. Three of the board’s seven trustee seats are up for election this year, and there’s a crowd of candidates vying

LEN ELLYN 2 GSuburban Life
School District 41 has been gathering input from the public on whether or not to introduce full-day kindergarten. Because of space limitations, implementing full-day kindergarten would require
additions to existing schools or the construction of a new school. District officials have said a referendum would be needed to fund the project. What’s next: Administrators will continue collecting information and make a formal presentation to the Board of Education in the coming months. If approved, the goal would be to have full-day kindergarten introduced by the beginning of next school year.

Percent of district survey respondents who said they would be in favor of full-day kindergarten (446 out of 642 people)
3. Scaling back What we know: The village of Glen Ellyn has been talking about adding several new buildings in the near future, including a police department and a salt storage facility, because of space limitations and necessary upgrades. The police department would be constructed at Panfish Park and the salt storage facility would be built on the public works department grounds.

What’s next: The Glen Ellyn Village Board of Trustees has asked for both plans to be scaled down by administrators because of the high price tag that would accompany the projects. More discussion is expected on what can be cut in the coming months. The village’s desired price tag for the police department. Original estimates came in at $15.8 million. The salt facility bids came in above $1 million, and the village wanted costs significantly below that amount.

5. Boathouse rebuilding What we know: The Glen Ellyn Park District selected consultants to draw up construction plans for improvements to Lake Ellyn Park and the boathouse as part of its 2012 master plan. The project will include the historic restoration of the boathouse, replacement of the park’s west side trails and playground, landscape enhancement, stabilization of the lake’s shores and installation of permeable sidewalks. What’s next: Final plans are expected in the next few months, with the project to be bid out in April. Construction will begin in July and is expected to finish in 2016.

6. Green acres What we know: Voters approved a $2.95 million referendum in November for the Butterfield Park District to purchase a 2.24-acre property at Routes 53 and 56.

Group presented a proposal for a new development at the property owned by Giesche Shoe Store, which closed in October. The plan would include 8,400 square feet of retail space and 125 apartments, as well as a parking garage with 76 or 202 spaces, depending on how many levels the village wants for the facility. It would take up the village’s Main Street parking lot and the St. Petronille Catholic Church parking lot. There is no dollar amount listed on the incentives requested from the Opus Group. Items include the donation of the Main Street parking lot, any rededication costs required at parking lots, the land-lease agreement with St. Petronille and financial responsibility for the new parking garage. What’s next: The board indicated it would be in favor of moving forward with the proposal. Village administrators are working with the Opus Group on the project.

‘There is one less family that is homeless’ This year was an exciting year for DuPagePads, as 392 people obtained permanent housing, 145,501 meals were served, 44,284 nights of shelter were provided and 1,360 individuals were assisted, including 241 children in 144 families. One of these families was Angel’s, and she shares her journey below. “With nowhere to go, my children and I walked to COMMUNITY DuPagePads. With a lump in VOICE my throat, tears in my eyes Carol and my pride in my purse, I Simler told them, ‘I need help.’” A myriad of challenges led Angel to this point. She had been through an abusive marriage, suffered health complications, lost her $42,000-a-year job and no longer had a place to call home for her and her children. Angel describes her life at that time as being, “downright depressing!” Angel said the staff at DuPagePads offered her a helping hand. “They were there to root for me – that type of cheering section helps you face your giants.” In February 2012, Angel moved into her own apartment. “My case manager greeted us at the door and said, ‘welcome home.’” Tears welled in Angel’s eyes as she looked around her furnished apartment. “There were bags and bags. They had taken care of every detail, from light bulbs to dishes and everything in between.” Angel and her children had been doing well until this summer when Angel faced immense pain, which called for an emergency room visit and immediate surgery. Her son, who had accompanied her in the ambulance, was told by the doctor he could not stay overnight. “I was hysterical and with no relatives to call, I contacted my DuPagePads case manager.” Angel’s case manager showed up to the hospital at 4:30 a.m. to pick up her son. Following the surgery, she brought Angel’s children back to visit her and assured them their mother was going to be OK. Angel said DuPagePads has “been my rock through this trying time.” “From a ride to the grocery store to providing cleaning supplies, DuPagePads does whatever they can to help. Because of DuPagePads, my children can stay at their school in Naperville; there is one less family that is homeless, one less child on the streets. To my DuPagePads family, words cannot express the gratitude and admiration I have for you! Thank you for never letting go!” Interested in assisting families and individuals like Angel? Visit our website, www.dupagepads.org/donate, to see how your donation can make more success stories possible. We look forward to a new year as we work together to end homelessness in DuPage County.

Thumbs up to Hadley Junior High School instructor Brian Bonkowski’s social studies class. The students recently participated in a component of Glen Ellyn School District 41’s problem-based learning program addressing low voter turnout, for which they made presentations to village officials about how to draw people to the polls. It’s never too early to take an interest in local government. Here’s hoping you had a great 2014 and that 2015 is even better. I’m a 62-year-old black man, and I hate that all this race stuff, black and white, is going on. I will never understand how all this got started. Back in the day, black people had to go in the back door or sit in the back of the bus, and white people could make them get up so they could sit down. Why did all this happen? Why couldn’t we have love from the beginning and stop all this hate? I don’t understand how the color of your skin [matters]. GLEN ELLYN – The Glen Ellyn Park District announced in December that its 2015 budget includes a projection of $900,000 in reserve funds for large projects expected in the coming years. The budget was passed at the district’s Dec. 16 Board of Commissioners meeting. About five years ago, the board decided to make minimizing expenses and maximizing revenues a priority, according to Executive Director Dave Harris. In the early 2000s, it undertook several significant projects that provided growth or expansion, but increased expenses, including: the construction of Ackerman Sports & Fitness Center, the purchase and renovation of Maryknoll Park, the renovation of Main Street
Recreation Center and the purchase and renovation of Spring Avenue Recreation Center. The decision to stockpile surpluses was made because of concerns the district wasn’t paying enough attention to the long-term care of its assets. “You don’t want to have a playground you can’t maintain over 20 years,” Harris said. “This allows the Park District to have funds available to maintain its assets without … seeking a tax increase for these improvements.” A finance committee was designated to create an asset replacement plan through 2035 and to determine how much money would be necessary to address all needs during that time. Harris estimated the improvements will cost an average of $600,000 per year. District fees for sports

GLEN ELLYN – A martial arts club in Glen Ellyn has been teaching self defense for 40 years. The Glen Ellyn Aikido Club celebrated four decades of classes in 2014. The classes are offered at College of DuPage. Club member Paul Simpson, who’s been practicing aikido about a year, said “aikido” translates literally to “the way of being in spiritual harmony.” It was developed after World War II, he said, and uses an opponent’s energy and momentum against him or her to attack without causing harm, according to a

At the time, he was doing karate and looking for another martial art to take up. He decided to participate in an aikido practice. “I went in there and I was very impressed when I asked the teacher some questions and I gave it a try,” Lynch said. He continued practicing, moved to Chicago in 2000 and joined the Glen Ellyn Aikido Club, where he’s been the chief instructor for eight years. The group will provide a demonstration at North Central College in February.

By Stephanie Kohl As the temperatures continue to drop, those looking for outdoor recreational activities are often limited. Looking for a sport to play this winter? Catch the Platform tennis fever sweeping the area. Platform tennis is a great winter, spring and fall activity played by men and women of all ages. The game is a racquet sport, derived from tennis, usually played two-against-two. The court is one-third the size of a traditional tennis court and is surrounded by a wire fence. Unlike its tennis counterpart, playing the ball off the fence is not just allowed, but encouraged. The game is played with special paddles that differ in size and shape from tennis racquets. “It really attracts a lot of tennis players who want to get outside during the winter months,” said Laura Berendt, platform tennis professional with the Glen Ellyn Park District. She said the sport attracts tennis players, racquet ball players and squash players of
all ages. Berendt said the game is big on the North Shore and is spreading into the Western Suburbs. Although played outside, Berendt said there is enough movement, players stay warm. The Glen Ellyn Park District’s platform tennis facility, 845 Pershing Ave., features four courts and a modern paddle hut that offers a view of the games. A heating system keeps the deck ice free, allowing yearround play. Court lighting ensures players can continue to enjoy the game after sunset. Whatever your skill or fitness level, the game provides a combination of outdoor exercise, concentration, athleticism and fun. “It’s a small court, so you can talk to your opponents face-to-face,” Berendt said. “It’s really a social sport.”
The park district has about 250 people involved in platform tennis, be it through travel leagues or in-house leagues. For more information, visit gepark.org. adno=S0243616

La Buona Vita brings Italy to La Grange LA GRANGE – When you’re craving the taste of Italy, there’s no need to empty your savings account on plane tickets and hotel stays. Just head to downtown La Grange and visit La Buona Vita to experience delicious, homemade Italian fare. On a stormy December evening, my brother and I decided we were in the mood for a home-cooked, hearty Italian meal, and decided to give La Buona Vita a try. Eager to satisfy our appetites, we perused the long-sheet menu tempting us with everything from steak and lamb chops to seafood. To open the meal, we ordered fried calamari, fully aware of the amount of calories we were about to consume. Once we’d savored the well-prepared appetizer, our server brought our dinner salads and two generously portioned pasta dishes. My fellow diner chose the Linguine Viareggio, featuring linguine with mussels, baby clams and scallops dressed in a lively pomodoro sauce. The meal, according to my brother, had the perfect amount of spicy kick. While my taste buds usually crave a heap of spices, I decided to order the Rigatoni Emilio – pairing the pasta with fresh mozzarella, homemade marinara and garlic. The sauce was light and tasty, a great complement to the creamy mozzarella. After we consumed every last, delectable bite of our food, both my brother and I leaned back and sighed, knowing full well not one more ounce could make its way to our stomachs – we were stuffed. The restaurant also features gluten-free recipes including pasta dishes, so no one has to miss out on the pleasures of Italian dining. And the elegant bar offers craft beer on tap, along with select wines from around the globe. The bar is a focal point along the sleek dining room, where large windows look onto the cityscape. During our next visit, the dinner menu won’t be the only one on my radar, because I’m leaving room for one of the tempting dessert selections: La Buona Vita’s Molten Chocolate Cake. It promises a warm chocolate cake with a gooey center served with vanilla ice cream and raspberry sauce. On our visit, we found the food alone was enough to warrant a return trip, but the service added to the experience. Not only was our server attentive and extremely helpful when
