Glen Ellyn proceeds with nearly $3M in Crescent Boulevard improvements By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Village officials will proceed with a nearly $3 million construction project on Crescent Boulevard in front of Glenbard West High School later this year. The Village Board approved an intergovernmental agreement Monday between the village and the Glenbard Township High School District 87 Board of Education for the project. The agreement will provide temporary easements to allow crews to rebuild side-

walks and driveways at the school. Village Engineer Bob Minix said the project will be a complete reconstruction of Crescent Boulevard between Park Boulevard and Lake Road. Work will include an improved intersection at Park Boulevard and a roundabout at the three-way intersection of Crescent Boulevard, Park Row and Crescent Court. The new road will have two 14-foot lanes and will be threetenths of a mile long. It will be divided by a decorative median with some landscaping.

Other additions to Crescent Boulevard include installing new parallel parking lanes, retaining walls and a storm sewer and replacing sidewalks and crosswalks along the road. The project is estimated to cost $2.8 million, according to board documents. The village has identified a $1.6 million grant from the Federal Surface Transportation Program, which it will seek, and it has already received a grant from the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program worth $73,440. Work will be done by the Illinois Department of Trans-

portation. The project is scheduled to begin in the summer and will coincide with Glenbard West’s break. After the Crescent Boulevard project is complete, the village will construct 16 parking spaces on the west side of Park Row. The board voted unanimously to approve the intergovernmental agreement between the village and the school district. Village President Alex Demos said the agreement is an “outstanding example” of intergovernmental collaboration.

Board considers requiring fire alarm systems downtown By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Village officials are considering an ordinance that would require all buildings in a portion of downtown to install fire alarm systems. Planning and Development Director Staci Hulseberg said the preliminary ordinance would require all buildings in the C5A portion of the Central Business District have a new system in place by January 2017.

Hulseberg said the system would be wireless and installed on a building’s ceiling. It would be able to sense heat from a fire and could notify authorities. The cost of installing the system is estimated at $2 to $4 per square foot, Hulseberg said, bringing a rough estimate for costs for the entire C5A portion to about $2 million. “I just want us to know we are going to impact a lot of property owners,” Hulseberg said.

The C5A portion of the Central Business District is bordered at the north by Pennsylvania Avenue between Glenwood and Forest avenues. It encompasses all the structures south to Crescent Boulevard and continues south across the railroad tracks. The area includes all buildings on the north side of Duane Street between Glenwood Avenue and

Main Street and the two at the northeast corner of Main and Duane streets. It also includes buildings on both sides of Main Street between Duane Street and Hillside Avenue, in addition to clusters of several structures at the southwest corner of Main and Duane streets and the northeast corner of Main Street and Hillside Avenue.

GLEN ELLYN – When it comes to building a railroad overpass or underpass, Glen Ellyn is at an impasse. The Glen Ellyn Village Board discussed a feasibility study Monday regarding the construction of a vehicle and pedestrian overpass or underpass. The report estimated the cost of such a project would be $26.4 million in building expenses alone. Village Manager Mark Franz said there are grants available for the undertaking. In a best-case scenario, Glen Ellyn would be responsible for $1.3 million, as well as related engineering fees. Jennifer Mitchell and Barry Kravitz of HDR Engineering presented various proposals to the village Monday, but no decisions were made. The board looked at options that included overpasses connecting Pennsylvania Avenue and Duane Street and underpasses at Glenwood and Prospect avenues. Mitchell said any time an overpass or underpass – which qualifies as an additional railroad crossing – is constructed, an existing crossing must be closed. Several of the proposals included shuttering such a crossing – typically Prospect Avenue. Some of the overpass options couldn’t accommodate pedestrian traffic, meaning the village would be required to build a separate walkway bridge. An overpass would need to be a minimum of 27 feet from

If the village decided to go with an underpass, it is federally mandated that it be built 17 feet below the tracks, to allow for semitrailer traffic, Mitchell said. Kravitz said the underpass would be more costly, because

John Perdue District 89 superintendent Perdue said the district went through six months of research related to full-day kindergarten, which included looking at student literacy, math skills, staffing needs and school space. The research, Perdue said, showed full-day kindergarten would have a positive effect on students both academically and socially. Last year, nearly 25 percent of kindergartners tested were not reading at the first-grade level by the end of the year. Perdue said the district’s goal is to have all students reading at grade level by third grade. “What we’re hearing loud and clear from our teachers is

that there isn’t enough time,” said Emily Tammaru, assistant superintendent for learning, in the release. “The full day will actually allow them to slow down and build activities that meet both academic and social and emotional needs of our students.” According to board documents, the staffing costs related to the move to full-day kindergarten will be $293,000 to $327,000 and will include five full-time and two part-time teachers. Perdue said there are 10 teachers retiring this school year, and most of their positions will not be filled to accommodate full-day kindergarten. “We’re simply reallocating, repositioning staff and using attrition,” he said. Additional kindergarten furniture will cost an estimated $25,000 and curriculum materials about $20,000. The district will not need to construct any more classrooms. “We had adequate space,” Perdue said. “We may have to do some retrofitting in some spaces.”

GLEN ELLYN – Community Consolidated School District 89 will introduce full-day kindergarten in the 2015-16 school year after the Board of Education unanimously approved the program Monday, the district announced in a news release. The program will affect about 200 students who will attend Arbor View, Briar Glen, Park View and Westfield elementary schools in the coming school year. Parents still will have the option to enroll students in a half-day program, the location and structure of which will be determined based on demand. The full day will provide more time to develop language and math skills, as well as time for social studies, science, art and expanded physical education and music. Superintendent John Perdue said he is pleased with the board’s approval. “This is aligned directly to our strategic plan of using time and more effective ways to increase learning,” he said.

The roof of the McKee House will soon be a topic of conversation for the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County Board of Commissioners. Located between Glen Ellyn and Lombard on St. Charles Road, the house was built in 1936 by local men in the Civilian Conservation Corps on the edge of the Churchill Woods Forest Preserve. The structure, which served as the district’s first administration building, has been vacant since 2002. District Director of Communications Susan Olafson

said the house will be on the agenda at the board’s Jan. 27 meeting, with the board scheduled to look at options regarding the roof. The shingles are in poor shape, which has led to the formation of a hole that allows water into the home when it rains, damaging the interior. Cost estimates for the roof repairs are not available, according to Olafson, because the project is still out to bid. Mike Wilson, of the Citizens for Glen Ellyn Preservation, said this is a big step for the historic home.

Q&A

GLEN ELLYN – Who ever said coloring is just for kids? Wendy Piersall, a Woodstock resident who grew up in Glen Ellyn and graduated from Glenbard West High School, has published a coloring book for adults called “Coloring Animal Mandalas.” Piersall recently spoke with Glen Ellyn Suburban Life reporter Evan Shields.

Piersall: I have a website with kids’ activities, and a few years ago, I drew up some mandala coloring pages Wendy for kids and/or Piersall adults with animals in them. Then a publisher found them just about a year ago now, maybe a little more than that, and asked if I wanted to do a whole book of them. And I absolutely jumped at the chance

Shields: Can you start off by telling me a little bit about the book?

Signs to have your hearing evaluated Q: When should I have my hearing evaluated

A: here are several signs that can indicate that your hearing needs to be evaluated. Here are six of these signs: Dr. Terri Lightbody (630) 580-5777 1) You have trouble hearing in noise. You ind yourself having to look at the person speaking to hear them better. 2) Someone tells you that you need to get your hearing/ears checked. hose who tell others this have observed a pattern of behavior that may indicate a hearing problem.

4) It seems others, especially kids, mumble a lot. I’ve been told many

5) You have ear noises. Presence of ear noises, known as tinnitus, may be indication of a hearing problem. Ear noises can consist of ringing, buzzing, hissing or thumping. Any ear noise should be evaluated for medical reasons. 6) Have a medical condition. Diabetes, heart, circulatory, thyroid problems and treatments for cancer with chemotherapy and/or radiation are conditions that may contribute to hearing problems. he prevalence of hearing loss is actually the reverse of what most people think. he majority (65%) of people that have hearing loss are under the age of 65. One out of every six baby boomers (age 50-64) have a hearing problem. Hearing problems are not conined to the elderly and are disruptive to life. If you notice any of these signs, you should have your hearing evaluated.

• ALARM Continued from page 2 Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company Chief Jim Bodony said the ordinance is a good idea because downtown is very dense and the buildings were constructed at a time when there was no fire code. If a fire broke out in the middle of the night in a building without adequate fire prevention equipment, a majority of downtown could be consumed in the flames. “I would be negligent if I didn’t tell the board this is something that needs to be done,” he said. Bodony said there are only about a dozen buildings downtown that are compliant with the village fire code, and only four of those have sprinkler systems. The village is looking at grant options, but Hulseberg said it’s unlikely they’ll get any funding because the federal government typically only gives money to very historic properties for fire system installment. SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA GLEN ELLYN – Glen Ellyn police are investigating a burglary that resulted in the theft of multiple pieces of jewelry. Deputy Chief Bill Holmer said several high-end watches were stolen from a home, in addition to rings, necklaces and costume jewelry. The burglary was reported shortly after 5 p.m. Dec. 31 in the 700 block of Elm Street, according to police department documents. A door had been broken open, Holmer said. “It was definitely a burglary,” he said. “There was forced entry to the house.”

Heroes are needed for special-needs families We need heroes. At Western DuPage Special Recreation Association, we rely on heroes in order for us to be able to serve the many families with special needs in DuPage County. These heroes aren’t wearing capes and masks. They aren’t flying through town in search of villains. But they are saving the day. COMMUNITY Who are these heroes? VOICE They are people just like you, Sandy your friends, neighbors and Gbur your family members. They are people who champion for our participants and families. We see heroes every day at WDSRA. What makes them heroes is how they support WDSRA and in turn our families. It may be through a recommendation made to a family looking to help their son or daughter make friends. It could be the cheers of encouragement given as our athletes compete on the field or in the gym. It is often a simple act of kindness shown by coming over to speak with our young adults who are enjoying an evening of socializing. Heroes make it possible for Joey to be a part of a Special Olympics team his family would not be able to afford without a scholarship. Once on the team, Joey is a part of something bigger than himself. He not only has teammates but friends who embrace him for who he is. Because of heroes, Olivia can settle into camp even though she struggles with transitions. There is an iPad customized with apps specifically for her and a variety of sensory tools available to make those transitions go more smoothly. Mom and Dad finally have that elusive feeling of being at ease knowing that Olivia will have a positive experience each and every day. Right now, we need heroes who can show their support through ticket purchases, donations, sponsorships and the magnanimous giving associated with our largest fundraising event of the year, The Black & Red Bash. Leading up to the event, we are looking for donations for our silent auction and our wine/ spirit pull. Sponsorships are appreciated because they greatly help offset the cost of the event and add to the financial success of the evening. On Feb. 28, we need you, your friends, neighbors and family members to attend and give from the heart. Your support will contribute significantly to the fulfillment of the hopes and dreams of families like Joey’s and Olivia’s. This is one evening we need our heroes by our side. Consider making a donation, securing a sponsorship or buying tickets to The Black & Red Bash. You too can be a hero! Learn about The Black & Red Bash and buy tickets at www.wdsra.com or 630-681-0962.

In response to a Sound Off comment in a Jan. 7 edition about Hadley Junior High School eighth-graders working on the problem of voter turnout, it needs to be kept in mind that those very same students are the future of leadership in the community. Having problem-based learning that tackles a real problem of voter turnout is the kind of learning that is going to help prepare these students for when they grow up. Students should be prepared for actual real world problems, and not just stick to reading, writing and arithmetic. The kind of thinking that problems should just be “left to the adults” is somewhat old-fashioned, which can be supported by the fact that the adults of today’s America have the most unproductive Congress, in addition to increasing problems with poverty. We all must remember the students of today are the adults of tomorrow.

because I’ve been an artist on and off my whole life and just started to get back into it again. And that book came out in late August. The designs are extremely … relaxing, almost meditative to draw, as well as to color. So it’s been really kind of fascinating. At first, I was kind of skeptical, like is this really something that’s going to sell? Why is a publisher wanting to do an adult coloring book? And it’s turning into a big – with a capital T – Thing. In France – I guess that’s kind of where it’s caught on in recent years – coloring books are now outselling cookbooks.

Dentistry

Q: A:

I am missing a tooth in my upper jaw. My dentist is recommending I get an implant instead of a bridge. Is he right?

I most definitely agree with your dentist that an implant is the better route to go. You may feel an implant is very costly, but in the long run it will last a very long time compared to a bridge. Charise M. Petrelli DDS Statistically, bridges only last an average of 6 years, where an implant can last more than 25 years. Sometimes an implant can last a lifetime. With a bridge, you are also turning a one tooth problem into potentially a multiple tooth problem since a bridge always involves 3 or more teeth. What happens when that bridge fails? It will involve every tooth attached to that bridge. If the implant fails, which is very unlikely, it only involves the one tooth. I would highly recommend that you speak to your dentist about the implant option more and perhaps see a specialist for a (630) 942-0727 consultation. www.glenellyndentistry.com

Restaurant reviews

Two Brothers brewpub worth the hunt WARRENVILLE – Two Brothers Tap House in Warrenville isn’t as showy a dining venue as its landmark Roundhouse digs in Aurora, but gives patrons a ringside seat at the actual brewery. The tasty fare complements not only Two Brothers’ extensive creations and sampling opportunities, but more than 50 additional bottled artisan brews from the U.S. and around the world. Savvy fans of the craft beer enterprise, which has been growing by hops and bounds since brothers Jim and Jason Ebel took the leap in 1996, know they can time a weekend meal with a free tour of the brewery. They’re offered at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Saturdays, and 1:30 p.m. Sundays, with no reservations needed. But added circus aside, the Tap House is an attraction in its own right. Tables, booths and high-tops dot the industrial space, whose walls sport giant, framed versions of a variety of Two Brothers’ artistic beer labels. The restaurant notes that all the meats are organic, and dishes are made from scratch. An added perk is that the kitchen serves late, which my companion and I took advantage of after a busy Saturday. Scanning the menu, I read the Brewer’s Reuben beef brisket is brined in-house for seven days and was sad to hear it had sold out earlier in the evening. But then I noticed the pulled pork, which is prepared with dry rubbed pork butt smoked over apple wood for five hours. The meat was tender and perfectly spiced in a Lexington-style vinegar sauce. It was such a generous portion that I would have liked a bit more of the coleslaw that topped it in a zesty interplay of texture and flavor. In a nice touch for the wheat intolerant, gluten-free rolls can be substituted at no extra charge. To accompany my sandwich, I almost picked the sweet potato fries, but am glad I opted for the roasted

Slow second quarter sinks Glenbard West By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – This has been a season of near misses for the Glenbard West boys basketball team, which entered play Jan. 9 with five of its seven losses by eight points or less. And Friday’s 56-46 West Suburban Silver loss to Oak Park River Forest played out in a similar fashion as the Hilltoppers hung with the Huskies aside from a poor second quarter. “We are doing good things in stretches,” Glenbard West coach Tim Hoder said. “We just have to sustain it. We are still searching for consistency. You have to play a good four quarters to beat any team in our league.” Glenbard West led 14-8 after the opening eight minutes before Oak Park went on a 15-3 second quarter run. “We played well early,” Hoder said. “Then they picked up their pressure and we struggled with it. We had too many turnovers.” Brian Cochrane had 12 points, Justin Pierce totaled 10 and Alex Passi contributed nine. “Brian made some shots,” Hoder said. “He made three 3s in the second half. He is a good shooter and he helps open things up when he is knocking down shots.” Next up is a challenging back-to-back set as the Hilltoppers face Hinsdale Central and Lyons Township on Friday and Saturday.

“We are still searching for consistency. Hinsdale has a lot of size and that will be a challenge for us and LT has very good guards and they change defenses a lot. “It is a tough weekend for us for sure. They are no nights off at all in our conference. These two teams are first and second Jackie Gould - For Shaw Media place teams right now so it’s even a little extra tough.” Glenbard West’s Kalen Starkey goes to the basket Dec. 27, 2014, during a game against Hoffman Estates.

Ohio State defensive lineman Tommy Schutt, a Glenbard West alumnus, and the Buckeyes win the inaugural College Football Playoff national championship game Monday.

ARLINGTON, Texas – Glenbard West will forever have a tie to the winning side of the first College Football Playoff national championship game. Tommy Schutt, a 2012 Glenbard West graduate, was part of a stout defensive effort as Ohio State defeated Oregon 42-20 in the inaugural CFP title game Monday at AT&T Stadium. The Buckeyes finished the season with a 14-1 record. Schutt had one tackle in the game on the defensive line as

the Buckeyes put the clamps on a typically high-powered Oregon offense. Schutt and his teammates on defense made their living on third down, limiting the Ducks to just two conversions on 12 attempts. OSU stopped Oregon on two fourth down attempts, including one on the Ohio State 3-yard line early in the second quarter. For the season, Schutt, a junior defensive tackle, played in 12 games and recorded 10 total tackles, including eight solo stops. He also had a tackle for loss and a pass breakup this season.
